Soar Valley Life “A Li le Chaos” ...a film we watched yesterday, starring Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet. Set in 17th century France, it tells of the landscaping of the gardens at the Palace of Versailles, but the tle could just as easily describe deadline me here at Burton Towers. Anne Harrison Mixed Media Artist, Leicestershire My passion for walking in the English countryside throughout its glorious seasons, together with my love of creative gardening, inspires me to explore the depth and texture which ‘Thread Painting’ can add to the palette of the fine artist. Painting directly onto canvas I begin to build up the image with the embroidery, highlighting texture onto the details of the landscape, including trees, hedgerows and flowers.

“A very welcoming, family friendly place, full of beautiful things. Great for a pot of tea while the children play in the garden.”

www.suttonboningtongallery.com 01509 678867 Open Thursdays - Sundays 11am - 5pm © SVL

In the film there are a few memorable metaphors, as you might expect, about gardening and flowers. One in par cular struck me. Kate Winslet, being presented for the first me at court, was asked a ques on by the recently bereaved King Louis XIV: “And what protec on can we afford this rose from these harsh elements of change?” Her reply, “A li le warmth from the sun can do wonders for the growth of a rose, your majesty.” (And hasn’t that Rose done well since starring 17 years ago as lead actress in the film of the ill‐fated Titanic? A dozen top awards including an Oscar, 2 BAFTAs and 3 Golden Globes and over 2 dozen more films to date.) But, to get back to my point: About eight years ago I purchased an end of season rambling rose from Derry’s Nurseries in Cossington and planted it by our front door. With a li le warmth from the sun it gives a beau ful display each summer. And since star ng Soar Valley Life, more than 3 years ago now, I have regularly called in Derry’s to leave a few copies hoping I could en ce them to feature in the magazine. On my last visit, Ash Dayman was outside fixing up a new sign. “Pop and see us a er Easter, talk to my Dad and we’ll see what we can do.” The result of that is on pages 14 and 15...

Tree Fellers

A head for heights, and a love of the outdoors would probably be among the top a ributes required for this line of work... I caught up with the JSB team on a job in Glenfield, where they were cu ng a dozen or more overgrown leylandii trees down to size. Josh was hidden twenty feet up in the thick of the foliage, detectable only by the whirring of a chain saw and violent rustling as a branch plummeted downwards into the emp ed car park; he gradually appeared as more branches fell. James was in charge of the shredder which was rapidly gobbling up the severed bits of tree and pulverising them into ny fragments ready for conversion into Biomass fuel‐ which is green fuel for

the 21st century. Larger logs are put aside for seasoning and reuse where possible or for log burning stoves if not. Graham was finishing off at the rear of the premises as this was to be their last day on this job. I asked James what sort of training they’d undertaken for this line of specialised work. “Between the three of us we have more than thirty years experience as professional climbers for contractors working for u lity companies; moving over to the private sector was a natural progression.” Tree Fellers Josh, Graham & Onwards and James of JSB Tree Surgery upwards!

1 Watch out for late frosts. Protect tender plants. 2 Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any s ll remaining. 3 Plant out summer bedding at the end of the month. 4 Collect rainwater and inves gate ways to recycle water for irriga on. 5 Regularly hoe off weeds. 6 Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days.

Plant out cannas and dahlias when the danger of frost has passed. Tubs can be planted up with summer bedding in milder areas. If you want to grow your own spring bedding for next year, many common choices including wallflowers, pansies, and daisies, (Bellis perennis) need to be sown between now and July in order to flower next spring, as they are biennials.

Page 14

7 Mow lawns weekly, keeping your lawn at a constant height throughout the growing season. 8 Check for nes ng birds before clipping hedges. 9 Li and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring‐flowering bulbs. 10 Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle grubs.

Gardening ps for May: Houseplants

Move conservatory plants, such as Cymbidium, Ficus and Citrus outdoors during warm days but bring back inside if cold nights are expected. Clean shiny‐leaved plants (such as Anthurium, above) with a damp cloth and spiky plants with a so brush. Pot up houseplants showing signs of being rootbound or top dress large containers with fresh compost.

Pest and disease watch

Cool condi ons and regular watering will help keep po ed indoor azaleas looking good for longer. Remember to water azaleas with rainwater collected in a rain bu , not with tap water. Treat yourself to a moth orchid – they are beau ful and the most popular po ed flower.

Viburnum beetle grubs start nibbling holes in the leaves this month, giving plants a ta ered appearance. Inspect V. nus and V. opulus regularly and spray or pick off the grubs by hand. Check roses for signs of blackspot, aphids and leaf‐rolling sawfly damage. Fungicides containing myclobutanil, tebuconazole and tri conazole contain insec cides to control pests.

Inspect sick looking box and holly trees for signs of blight. Caterpillars, aphids and other fly pests can all be problema c at this me of year. Early infesta ons can be managed by hand removal, but approved insec cides are necessary for more serious a acks.

Help to Buy ISAs This year’s Budget introduced the Help to Buy ISA, a government offer to top up first me buyer savings for a deposit on a house... • For every £1 you save (up to a maximum of £200 each month) the government will give you 25p, up to a total deposit of £12,000. There is no monthly minimum amount you must save to qualify, just save as much as you can afford. Savings of £12,000 mean you'll actually have £15,000 to put down as a deposit. • Help to Buy ISAs should be available from autumn 2015 and should stay open to first me buyers for at least four years. You'll be able to open one with

up to £1000 deposit, so buyers can start saving now. Once you've got one, there's no me limit on how quickly you have to save or when you can use the government's bonus. • Help to Buy ISAs are only for people buying their first home for purely residen al purposes – not Buy to Let investors. • If you are buying with a second or third person, you can pool your Help to Buy ISA deposits for the same transac on. This means, that if two purchasers used their own individual Help to Buy ISAs and saved the full £12,000 limit each, the Government would provide £6,000 in free matched cash to

help towards their house purchase. There are no limits as to how many purchasers can u lise their own ISA deposit on the same property. • The Help to Buy ISA will only be available on homes worth up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). Help to Buy ISAs are just the latest way the government is hoping to help first‐ me buyers and boost the construc on industry For further informa on contact: Luke Smith: l.smith@moss‐solicitors.co.uk or Rachel Skinner: r.skinner@moss‐solicitors.co.uk Telephone: 01509 217770

Recipe This month’s recipe sponsored by

Appliance City

Smoked Haddock Kedgeree

Ready in 45 minutes Serves 4

Just a few ingredients are needed to make this simple rice dish but it’s full of flavour! It’s ideal for a quick and easy supper or filling weekend brunch served with crusty bread or warmed mini naan breads, if liked.

1

Place the haddock in a large pan, cover with plenty of cold water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 5‐6 minutes un l the fish just flakes. Boil the eggs in a small pan of water for 7‐8 minutes.

2

Remove the fish with a slo ed spoon and flake the flesh discarding any skin and bones. Strain the cooking liquid into a jug – you’ll need about 600ml so top up with water if needed. Run the boiled eggs under cold water un l cool enough to handle. Remove the shells and cut into wedges. Set aside.

3

Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the onion and garlic over a medium heat for 5‐6 minutes un l so ened. S r in the spices and cook for 1 minute then add the basma rice and cook, s rring, for 1 minute. Gradually pour in the reserved stock and bring to the boil.

4

The AGA Saga

The AGA cooker was introduced in 1922 for big houses with busy kitchens... The great and the good were, and s ll are, proud owners of the world’s most famous cooker. But did you know it’s inventor won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1912 for his work in developing an automated gas ligh ng system for marine lighthouses? Swedish born Nils Gustav Dalen was permanently blinded in one of his experiments; this led him to develop a cooking system with no visible naked flame which could run con nuously using only 8 pounds of coal per day. Today, AGA cookers can run on solid fuel, gas, electric, oil or a combina on of fuels..

The name is formed from the ini als of Ak ebolaget Gas Accumulator ‐ the company Dalen owned. Carl Hodgkins of CJ Hodgkins Ltd has grown up with AGA technology. His father was manager at C. A. Newton of Derby who were an AGA retailer before they were taken over by AGA. Carl worked under his father and then for AGA as a senior technician un l 2004 when he le to start up his own company. Today he services AGAs in some of the biggest houses in the region, besides all those on the Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire.

Around Britain 5 Medical Firsts

1. Berkeley ‐ Dr Edward Jenner began inves ga ng smallpox at his medical prac ce in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, in the 1770s. Having noted that local milkmaids never contracted the disease, Jenner theorised that the cowpox they caught from their animals must somehow protect them against the more dangerous smallpox virus. His theory was correct, and by 1840 Parliament had introduced free vaccina ons against the disease. 2. Birmingham ‐ While working at Birmingham General Hospital in the 1770s, the chemist William Withering noted that pa ents suffering from dropsy made vast improvements upon taking a local herbal remedy containing foxgloves. Withering eventually discovered that the digitalis the foxgloves contain was effec ve in trea ng heart disease. 3. Cambridge ‐ The Cambridge University chemist Frederick Gowland Hopkins became one of the first scien sts to propose the existence of vitamins, or ‘accessory food factors’ as he called them, in 1898. His work won him the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1929. 4. Oldham ‐ Born at Oldham General Hospital on July 25 1978, Louise Brown was the first baby in the world to have been successfully conceived by in vitro fer lisa on, or IVF. Now a common fer lity treatment, the IVF procedure involves fer lisa on of an egg outside of a womb, with the egg then transplanted back into the mother. 5. Portsmouth ‐ When HMS Salisbury set sail from Portsmouth in 1747, on board was naval physician James Lind, who experimented by giving the crew a variety of foods (including garlic, citrus fruit and vinegar) to test their effec veness in preven ng scurvy. Although not the first scien st to propose the health benefits of citrus, Lind’s cleverly designed Salisbury experiment is considered the first medical trial of its type. © Taken from The Bri sh Isles: A Trivia Gaze eer by Paul Anthony Jones

Smile while you s ll have teeth!

On a recent holiday I spo ed an amusing sign which read, “Life is too short - smile while you s ll have teeth!” It reminded me how short life is and how smiling alters your physiology making you feel good. Smiling is infec ous, if you smile others will respond by smiling back and this will have a very posi ve impact on your overall health.

Teeth too can have a massive impact on health. There are studies that suggest oral health and gum disease can be related to serious condi ons like heart disease. One study found that the presence of common problems in the mouth including gum disease (gingivi s), cavi es and missing teeth are a very good predictor of heart disease. So it is important that you make looking a er your teeth a priority. It is very easy and not expensive to brush and floss your teeth regularly and that might be all that you need to do. Keep an eye on symptoms such as bleeding gums, sensi ve and loose teeth and visit your den st regularly for checkups. So keep smiling and long may you have teeth! Paula Reed FINALIST

Budget 2015

CP Accountancy Ltd

So, how will the announcements in George Osborne’s Budget affect you? The personal allowance for 2015/16 is £10,600 but this will increase to £10,800 for 2016/17 and again to £11,000 for 2017/18. The higher rate 40% tax threshold will also increase to £43,300 in 2017/18. There will be a new Personal Savings Allowance from 2016/17 which means the first £1,000 of interest received on savings will be tax‐free (reduced to £500 if you are a higher rate taxpayer). It was also announced that by 2020 the annual income tax return will be abolished. George Osborne said this is “a revolu onary simplifica on of tax collec on”. Informa on will be uploaded to a new digital tax account and will allow taxpayers to pay their tax in real me instead of wai ng un l 31 January following the end of the tax year. Businesses will be able to link their bank accounts and accoun ng so ware to the digital tax account. It will certainly be interes ng to see how this works in early 2016 when the first five million small businesses and ten million individuals have access to these accounts! Caroline Dinsmore

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Wai ng to board the plane for our weekend in Nice, my breathing became shallow, my hands felt clammy and my heart began to race. But it wasn’t the terror of being entombed in a silver tube burning gallons of kerosene in an illogical a empt to defy gravity, rather it was my other flying phobia - a brat sat in the seat behind. A er our furious dash across the tarmac elbowing nonpriority boarders out of the way (we’d paid three quid extra to be treated like VIPs you see), we stored our luggage and se led into our seats. As Sarah began deba ng which variety of microwaved toasty to scald her mouth with, I commenced my nervous fidge ng. I craned my neck, scanning for infants. “Tom, just relax. We will be off in a minute.” “Look, there’s one coming now, and it’s ge ng nearer.” “They seem a perfectly nice family to me.” “It’s not Mum and Dad I’m worried about, it’s that red faced urchin I don’t like the look of.” The smug thirty‐something parents scanned the row numbers as they squeezed themselves inexorably nearer. Thirty one, thirty two, thirty.... three ‐ there, perfect. And where do you think they ended up? You know it brother.

The smiling cabin crew snapped the overheads shut and fussed everyone into their places as the Irish lilt of the pilot’s voice reassuringly purred our route over the PA system.

we’ll be there before you know it, read your guide to Nice.”

I closed my eyes. Maybe the kid with E numbers smeared over his s cky intemperate mush would be perfectly behaved, maybe he would just nod off in his Mummy’s arms? What did it ma er that he was directly behind my head? The flight was short, it didn’t… thump! Oh no, we hadn’t even taken off and it had started. Thump!

“Tom! Shush, they’ll hear you!”

It isn’t the actual kick that drives you insane, it’s the an cipa on of the ny toes tapping the back of your seat that’s so unbearable. “Tom, just ignore the li le chap,

“I am trying to ignore it (thump), but it’s not easy when you have parents who can’t control their blasted kid (thump).” “Good!”(Thump). As the big n bird eased herself into the stratosphere, the blonde terror behind succumbed to fa gue and fell into a fi ul slumber. I closed my eyes and tried to join the li le darling. Unfortunately, my a empt at a cat nap was sha ered by the racket from the well‐padded lady in the seat next to mine. Her vast paw swirled inside her plas c cashew tub, like Trevor Brooking choosing the FA Cup quarter finalists. Finally content

with her haul, she pulled yet another catch of nuts from her bucket. Her powerful elbow, nudging me with each swirl, was like a JCB digger excava ng a drain. As she dain ly tossed nuts into her pie hole with all the skill of a serial grazer, I leaned over to Sarah and whispered, “Do you think she’s coming to Nice to sample the gastronomy? (Nudge). “Shush Tom, she’ll hear you.” “Good!” (Nudge). Then thankfully, she nodded off. A moment’s pause, then inevitably, the snoring began. Her huge proboscis making a noise like a gnu with sinus trouble ‐ Zzzzzzphhh! This terrible cacophony, apart

from deafening me, roused the li le cherub si ng behind.

the glare from the brat’s Mother was enough to make her retreat.

And off we went again!

Sat back in her seat, Sarah’s weapon of choice (elbow) was immediately deployed to painful effect.

Thump! “Right, that’s it, I’m going to say something!” “Tom! Please, we’re nearly there!” “I’m sorry Sarah but this is ridiculous (thump). Excuse me, I’m sorry to bother you, but can you not control your child? I’m not bothered but my wife is ge ng very angry.” “Tom!” Sarah squeezed her head next to mine through the li le gap between the head rests.

“How dare you bring me into it.” (Dig) “Ow! I...wanted to present a united front?” (Thump, Zzzzz) “In future Tom, leave me out of your squabbles please.” “Whatever you say dear and by the way, this is going to bruise.” “Good! And so will this one, hopefully!” (Dig). Oh, the joys of being a jet se er.....

With our faces squashed together, we must have looked quite alarming. She tried to smile, but

Silver Linings A li le over three years ago Sco Kempin, MD of Ecoclean Carpet and Floor care, found himself redundant a er the company he worked for was taken over... He had been a high flyer in the recruitment industry and, although only in his early for es, he found that it was now a younger man’s game and decided to try his hand at something new. With his redundancy payment and a li le of his savings he invested in a revolu onary system that offered an efficient, economical and environmentally friendly alterna ve to tradi onal wet carpet and floor cleaning. I visited Sco at his home in Loughborough and showing me through to his new garden office he said, “Since star ng Ecoclean, I’ve never looked back ‐ in fact I wish I’d done it years ago; being

made redundant really was a cloud with a silver lining. Ecoclean is already a three genera on business; my father‐in‐law and my son now work for the company. We have some major retail contracts in different parts of the country, one in London’s fashionable Oxford Street at a high class jewellers. That one involves carpets and stone floor, so it’s quite a specialist task.”

I asked what made the Ecoclean system different from conven onal forms of carpet and floor cleaning. “The ac ve ingredient is a dry substance that acts a bit like a sponge in that dust and dirt are absorbed instantly. First we apply the ingredient and then work it into the carpet using a special applicator. North, East, South, and West, if you like. Then we use what amounts to a very powerful

Too proud to admit you need help? As a qualified nurse of 25 years, and having run Absolute Care for three years now, I’ve no ced that people find it really difficult to accept help... It could be age‐related, or are they afraid of losing their independence thinking it’s the first step towards residen al care? Maybe they think they can’t afford help, or that it won’t be very good ‐ let’s face it, there’s a lot of bad press out there. Or could it be that people are just too proud to admit they need help? Therefore one of the most important aspects of my role is helping people overcome their anxie es and the good news is that once they try it they soon realise that just a li le help can make all the difference. It can help them stay independent, provide a focal point for their day and even help them regain lost skills. It can introduce new friends and provide opportuni es to re‐integrate with the community. And family members also feel reassured that their loved ones are receiving support.

Epidermoid Cysts and Milia Epidermoid cysts are smooth, round lumps filled with kera n - a fibrous protein - forming under the top layer of skin. Occurring anywhere on the body and varying in size, those removed using Advanced Electrolysis are most typically pea-sized or smaller. Milia are ny cysts most commonly found around the eyes and nose but can occur near the genitals. In infants they are o en called ‘milk spots’ and normally spontaneously resolve, but in adults they are unlikely to disappear and can be unsightly. Especially no ceable on dark skin, milia can be confused with whiteheads, promp ng a empts to squeeze them leading to soreness and scarring.

Appearance is generally improved immediately following removal as the area is fla ened in minutes. Within a day a dark scab forms and, once healed, there is o en no visual evidence of the blemish remaining.

Start from the car park on Burton Road, Repton. (On the B5008 south of the junc on of the A50 and the A38). The source of the River Dove is close to Buxton, on Axe Edge Moor. It flows generally south through the picturesque southern Peak District, including iconic Dovedale, the des na on of about a million people each year. For most of its journey to join the River Trent at Newton Solney, it forms the border between Staffordshire and Derbyshire. 1 Turn le out of the car park entrance to Mitre Drive and turn le past a footpath signpost to the wide metal gate set back on the right. Turn right, past this gate, up the wide track between hedges with the sports field to the right. Turn right, through a kissing gate, along the path and then le between houses. Cross the road and take the path ahead. 2 Keep direc on over the field ahead which may be under cul va on although a path should be well marked within any crop. Con nue up the right hand field edge, over the s le and passing le of the Dutch barn to the next s le at the corner of a tarmac farm drive. Keep ahead between fences and straight on when the drive bears le through gates. 3 Go down the slight slope, over the s le and cross the field ahead, a track should be well marked, to the s le behind the le hand end of the trees. Step over and carry on up the wide track on the field edge, with the hedge to the right, all the way to the road. 4 Turn right, along this road, which is o en busier than it first appears, to the main road in Newton Solney village. Turn le , down to the signpost for the church and take this narrow road to the right, to the church gates and go through the metal kissing gate on the right. Con nue through the churchyard and ahead along the path between the fence and the hedge. Descend the steps at the end and turn le down the tree lined cu ng to the River Trent. 5 Bear right, with the river, past the confluence with the River Dove and bear le away from the farm road over the s le next to the river. Carry on through the right hand metal gateway and bear le over the s le next to the metal gate. Bear right to the corner of a fence which is marked by a footpath disc, con nue with the fence to the right and go over the s le on the right, close to the far end. Turn le back to the original direc on with the low tree to the right, past a marker post and through the fence gap/dyke crossing. Go up to the river.

The theory of the universe beginning with a big bang was first taken seriously a er Vesto Slipher and Edwin Hubble published works in 1929 sugges ng that observable galaxies were moving away from us. It didn’t take too many clever bods to work out a er this supposi on that, if almost everything we observe from Earth is moving away, then it must have been closer if me is reversed. As technology advanced and measurements became much more accurate it became possible to extrapolate that reversal back to a single point in space and me. Add this specula on to what is known about the universe and star stuff and the argument gathers pace, arriving at the inevitable conclusion that to create this universal expansion there must have been an unimaginably massive big bang at the beginning of it all. Assuming that there was a big bang, one of the next ques ons would be ‐ is there any glimmer of heat remaining of this ferocious mighty fireball, even though it would have cooled to almost nothing with the expansion. In 1965, fi y years ago this month, two separate sets of scien sts from two different ins tutes discovered two connected vital pieces of big bang evidence. Bob Dicke and Jim Peebles of Princeton University calculated that the big bang theory demanded that there had to be a background temperature a li le above absolute zero; and Arno Panzias and Robert Wilson, using the very sensi ve low noise telescope at Holmdel, New Jersey, found a background temperature of 2.7 degrees above absolute zero wherever they pointed their telescope. They had found the a erglow of crea on.

twilight this month but is visible through a telescope in Scorpius. June: Venus enters twilight this month and loses some of its awe. But if you view it through a small telescope you will see it changing shape from half lit like a first or last quarter moon to a fat gibbous crescent ‐ because Venus is between us and the Sun it goes through phases a bit like the moon does. Meanwhile Jupiter lies to the le of Venus and trundles slowly from Cancer to Leo and eventually catches up with Venus on June 30th and will be about 2/3rds of a moon’s

breadth away from each other. Saturn keeps a respectable distance away and sets around 3.30 am. July: Venus and Jupiter are almost conjoined on 1st July being only half a degree apart and very low in the North‐West just a er sunset. If you can look through a telescope at Venus she will resolve into a fine crescent . Saturn has the later evening sky all to itself at Mag + 0.4 in Libra and sets around 1.30 am. Mercury and Mars, being too close to the Sun this month, are not visible.

A Good Deed Indeed

Under the current means tes ng arrangements, anyone with assets of more than £23,250 must pay the full cost if they need social or residen al care. This leaves 1 in 10 people over 65 facing costs of more than £100,000 during their life me.

For most of us it is a contradic on ‐ on the one hand we want to pay our way in later life and not be a burden to family or state, but on the other hand we don’t want all that we have strived for ‐ our house, savings and assets ‐ taken away to pay astronomical care home fees. And it is all too o en something many people don’t like to think about ‐ like making a will ‐ both could seem a bit like temp ng fate.

There are changes planned to be introduced next year to cap the amount any individual will have to pay for their care costs, but that’s a er the elec on and who knows what new austerity measures the next lot will dream up?

But it is impera ve that we plan ahead if we want to make the best of what we have and ensure that most of it goes where we want it to. If you don’t make plans and you get to a point where you need care beyond that which your family can
