Santa Steam Trains

Santa Special and Santa Deluxe trains bring Christmas joy to children and all the family. Presents for the children and seasonal refreshments for adults. The UK’s only Heritage Railway with a Branch Line takes first Paying Passengers on Reinstated Quarry Line... Over the weekend of 24th and 25th October more than 600 people travelled along the Mountsorrel branch line. Each train was made up of two coaches and two engines and carried approximately 40 passengers each. I remember talking to two volunteers at the Autumn Gala back in 2007 when there was a small display announcing the forma on of the group to re‐open the old quarry line. The proposal was for it to run from Swithland sidings to Bond Lane bridge on the outskirts of Mountsorrel and I wondered how they could achieve such a dream, how long it all might take and at what cost. But eight years and a few hundred thousand pounds and man hours later the project now takes shape. The weekend marked the official opening and enabled passenger trains to be tested with passengers aboard. It will not be un l the summer or autumn of next year before trains will run again and ini ally they will only be scheduled for Gala Days and special events.

Soar Valley Life A Tale of Four Houses Perhaps not quite as grand a gesture as Charles Dickens describes in the last lines of his classic ‘Tale of Two Ci es’ and maybe Loughborough isn’t quite a city yet, but each new magazine we produce always feels like the best we’ve ever done - far, far be er? You judge for yourself…

Local Artist Ruth Randall Specialising in wildlife pen and ink drawings, I have worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines, wildlife groups and Leicestershire Museums. This summer I began working on lino prints for greetings cards, which I love doing, and my new interest in dry-point etching. I’ve a lifelong love of animals and nature and, when out walking in the countryside with my husband and our dog, I’m constantly taking photos with a view to using them as reference for future art work. Early this year I was accepted into the Leicester Society of Artists, which was a tremendous boost and honour. Last year I entered the Sock Open Exhibition at Loughborough Town Hall and won the People’s Choice Award, which was wonderful.

“A very welcoming, family friendly place, full of beautiful things. Great for a pot of tea while the children play in the garden.”

When we started out, nearly four years ago now, we were happy with just one of each type of trade or business and felt that this was a fair selec on for our readers to do business with. But as we grew, both in circula on and readership, a fair choice was a be er offering; especially as some of our tradesmen were saying that at certain mes they were ge ng so busy they could only commence any new work some weeks ahead. Also, as we expanded our region it made sense to have similar types of businesses in different reaches of the Soar Valley ‐ like our carpet companies with one in Birstall and one in Shepshed ‐ or our pain ng and decora ng professionals with one in Kingston on Soar, one in Sileby and one in Markfield. Then we come to our four houses. They are all pre y close to one another but each offer something quite different: The Waterside by the river in Mountsorrel (page 26), The White Horse next to the church in Seagrave (page 59), The Free Trade Inn in Sileby (page 31) and, new to us this month, the newly refurbished White Swan in Sileby (pages 32 and 33).Each one has it’s own unique character and is a joy to frequent. You can have a different reason for visi ng any one of them: a party, or a pint or two whilst watching a game, an in mate meal for two, a family get together, or a business lunch. But what’s important, we feel, is that you have a variety. These four houses certainly offer that. Try them for yourself over Christmas and let us know what you think ‐ but you may need to book if you’re ea ng as I bet they’ll be busy!

Look to your Garden for Inspira on this Christmas

I love foraging in my garden and local hedgerows at this me of year to create seasonal displays… This wreath was made using materials from my garden ‐ except of course for the oasis ring, wire and ribbon. Evergreen foliage from Conifers, shrubs or climbers make the perfect

background for wreaths or table displays; here I have used Ivy as the base then built it up with bunches of crab apples and tassels from Garrya ellip ca. You could then repeat the use of the crab apples on your tree inside or even a bundle of birch twigs simply strung with crab apples would look very fes ve. The key to a good display is to keep it simple, don’t mix too many different things together, just using a few elements will create a more chic effect. Merry Christmas! Claire Jones

Top 10 jobs for early winter 1. Divide herbaceous perennials 1. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging 2. Plant tulip and daffodil bulbs for a spring display next year 3. Prune roses to prevent wind‐rock 4. Plant out winter bedding 5. Insulate outdoor containers from frost ‐ bubble‐wrap works well

Page 10

Pest and disease watch

6. Prevent ponds and stand pipes from freezing 7. Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding 8. Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops 9. Deciduous trees and shrubs can s ll be planted and transplanted. 10. Take hardwood cu ngs

Watch out for downy mildew and black spot on winter pansies. Check chrysanthemums regularly for signs of white rust. Look out for crown rot and brown rots (sclero nia) on died down perennials, especially if you are on a clay or poorly‐drained soil. Michaelmas daisy mites on Aster novi‐belgii cul vars can be a problem. Other asters, such as Aster novaeangliae cul vars and Aster ericoides cul vars, have more resistance.

Digging the soil, especially bare patches or newly cul vated land, will expose pest larvae and eggs to birds and frosts, as well as clearing weeds and improving soil structure. Don’t leave soil uncovered for too long, however, as it runs the risk of erosion and washing away of valuable nutrients. Black polythene shee ng will protect it in the absence of plan ng or mulch.

Tips for Early Winter: Cu ng back, pruning & dividing Con nue to cut down faded herbaceous perennials and add these to the compost heap. Penstemons are best le as‐is (except for deadheading) un l the spring, when they can be cut back further. In mild areas they can carry on flowering well into the late autumn and early winter. The old faded stems will help to protect the crowns from cold.

Mulching over the crowns in colder areas will also help. Ornamental grasses and bamboos can be cut back and died up at this me of year. It is s ll a good me to li and divide overgrown clumps of herbaceous perennials. Li and store dahlias, cannas and tuberous bedding begonias that have been hit by the first frosts.

Take hardwood cu ngs of ornamental shrubs such as Berberis, Buddleja, Salix, Forsythia, Ligustrum and Rubus. Many deciduous climbers can also be propagated in this way (e.g. Fallopia and Lonicera). Check hardwood cu ngs taken last year. They may

Nicky Morgan MP I am pleased to update readers on the electriďŹ ca on of the Midland Mainline. In early October the Secretary of State for Transport announced the electriďŹ ca on project, which had been paused, would be re-started. This project means not only faster and cleaner trains and journeys but also means the other line improvement works, which need to be carried out before the line is electriďŹ ed, will take place – including the straightening of the line at Market Harborough. Another issue which concerned residents earlier this year was the cu ng of our grass verges. This has also been discussed by the LCC Cabinet and it is good to note their conclusions that there should now be 6 cuts in urban areas, addi onal resources will be used in the peak growing months and there will be a variable cu ng frequency to deal with that peak growth season. I am very pleased that Leicestershire County Council has conďŹ rmed the pedestrianisa on of Loughborough town centre. Interes ngly the percentage of those suppor ng the full scheme had increased since the original consulta on. The LCC Cabinet document also shows that Loughborough con nues to hold its own in a tough retail market and our shop unit vacancy rate is lower than the East Midlands average and consistent with na onal ďŹ gures. I know there con nue to be concerns about the loca on of the Lemyngton Street bus stop and the Director of Highways has been tasked with persuing further discussions with the bus companies. The changes in Loughborough town centre allow for the easier organisa on of both the annual Loughborough Fair in November and the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights which will take place on Sunday 29th November. I know that across our local area there will be many wonderful Christmas events going on organised by hundreds of hard working and dedicated employees and volunteers – from school concerts to special shopping events to Christmas Tree Fes vals. I look forward to visi ng many such events and, when the me comes, wish you and your family a happy and peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2016.

The Art of the Possible Before you can discover what’s possible you need to see what you have available and have the experience to know it’s achievable... Chris Belton, owner of Ground Services Landscapes, Loughborough, worked for his dad when he le school and learned the trade of landscaping and ground work reinstatement from a master of the cra . “There are three major elements to groundwork: design, materials and labour. A er design, i.e. knowing what you want to achieve and that it is possible and affordable, prepara on is the most important thing,” Chris told me when I met him at his home back in September. “I work with some brilliant landscape designers and I’m always learning from them; I do enjoy crea ng something for the customer. I’ll meet with them at the site ‐ which could be an empty plot of land or an established garden that needs a makeover. We discuss what they want, where the materials are coming from and I’ll then work out how much me will need to be allowed and how much it’s all

going to cost. When we’ve all agreed we’ll start the prepara on at a me convenient to all par es. This is where experience comes in and being able to predict what may be involved and the type of equipment that will be needed. Learning the trade from someone like my dad has been invaluable; he really knew his stuff and in his me worked out how to overcome the many problems you can face with this type of work. You need to be flexible and adaptable and to account for variables such as the weather.” Now and coming up to winter is an excellent me to be thinking about changing the garden for next year. As the foliage dies down you begin to see what space you have and what poten al exists on your own li le piece of this earth. And someone like Chris Belton, who knows about the latest materials and techniques and what’s possible, is likely to be your best ally in ge ng your new project underway. Chris is happy to quote for any groundwork or landscaping job; why not check out what’s possible in your garden...

Tip

Place the gammon joint in a large deep pan with the onion, carrot, bay leaves and peppercorns. Pour over enough cold water to cover the joint. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface using a slo ed spoon. Reduce the heat, cover and leave to simmer for 11/2 hours, topping up the water level as needed. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas 4. Li out the gammon from the pan and place in a foil‐lined roas ng n (discard the cooking liquid). Leave to cool for 10 minutes. Cut away the skin from the gammon, leaving a thin layer of fat and score the fat into diamonds. Stud the scored fat with the cloves in an even pa ern. Mix together the marmalade, honey, mustard and sugar and spoon all over the gammon fat. Roast in the oven for 40‐45 minutes, bas ng regularly with the glaze and pan juices un l the fat is golden. Serve hot or cold garnished with fresh bay leaves and orange wedges. Add 1 tsp each ground cumin and ground coriander or a splash of Tabasco sauce to the glaze for a bit of extra spice, if liked.

Smoking and exposure to sunlight have been linked to the forma on of cataracts Why do cataracts occur? The main cause is age and most people will develop a cataract in both eyes, although one eye may be affected before the other. However, smoking and exposure to sunlight have been linked to the forma on of cataracts which affect men and women equally. Younger people can develop cataracts if they have an injury to the eye and certain medical condi ons including diabetes; taking certain medica on may also cause cataracts. Will cataracts affect my vision? You may no ce that your vision is less clear and dis nct. Car headlights and streetlights can become dazzling, and colours may

look different and become faded or yellowed. If you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see an optometrist. Can I prevent cataracts? There are various supplements and eye drops available which claim to slow the progression of cataracts. To try to prevent cataracts, or to stop them ge ng worse, wear good quality sunglasses with UV protec on and don’t smoke. You cannot make your cataracts worse by using your eyes too much! Can I drive if I have cataracts? You may con nue to drive providing you meet the vision

standards for driving and your optometrist can measure this accurately for you. You need to inform DVLA if you do not meet the vision standards for driving. Trea ng cataracts If your cataract is affec ng your day‐to‐day life, your optometrist can refer you to an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) for surgery. This involves removing the cloudy lens (cataract) and replacing it with a clear plas c one. You will need to see your optometrist a er a few weeks for an eye examina on as your spectacle prescrip on will have changed.

Landlords beware – new rules apply to Assured Shorthold Tenancies entered into on or a er 1 October 2015 Recovering possession of a property from a tenant is not always straigh orward. Most landlords of residen al property will let their proper es using an Assured Shorthold Tenancy (AST): for tenancies entered into on or a er 1 October 2015, the regime governing possession has become more stringent, and addi onal condi ons must be sa sfied if a landlord wants to serve a valid Sec on 21 No ce and be able to obtain a possession order. • A par cular form of sec on 21 no ce must be used (previously any form of no ce could be used so long as certain informa on was given) • A sec on 21 no ce cannot be served in the first four months of a tenancy (ruling out service on first day of tenancy, to expire on last day of ini al fixed term) • Sec on 21 no ce only valid if landlord has given tenant a current Gas Safety Cer ficate, Energy Performance Cer ficate, and a copy of the government’s guide ‘How to Rent’ (GSC and EPC should arguably be provided before the tenancy actually starts)

• Depending on the type of Sec on 21 No ce, landlord may not be able to issue a claim for possession order more than 6 months a er no ce was given • Prohibi on on serving sec on 21 No ce where tenant has complained about landlord’s failure to carry out necessary repairs, to avoid so‐called ‘retaliatory evic ons’, if certain criteria met Since 1 October 2015 (irrespec ve of start date of AST) all landlords must ensure their proper es are equipped with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors: smoke alarms must be installed on each storey of a property being used for living accommoda on; carbon monoxide detectors must be installed in each room used as living accommoda on in which solid fuel is used. Fines of up to £5,000 can be issued for non‐compliance. The law rela ng to Landlords and Tenants is not straigh orward. Graham Proud recommends... Brooklyn Lager Brooklyn Brewery founder Steve Hindy learned to brew beer whilst working as a foreign correspondent in the middle east. Alcohol being prohibited by Islamic law, the envoys took to brewing their own.. Fi ng then that Brooklyn Lager is brewed to an old recipe from 1919 which itself was prohibited shortly a er introduc on due to Prohibi on in the USA in that same year. At The Great American Beer Fes val in 2011, Brooklyn Lager won the gold medal. Amber gold and displaying a firm malt centre it is

supported by a refined bi erness and floral hop aroma. Liefmans Cuvee Brut from Liefmans Brewery, Oudenaarde, Belgium Liefmans is tradi onally brewed in winter and the blending process was originally introduced so that beers could be kept un l the summer. Older, highly flavoured beers are coupled with young, fresh brews, and the beer is then allowed to ferment a second me to create the perfect balance. Just as with champagne, the ‘blending’ of Liefmans beers is crucially important. Liefmans began in the 17th century when Jacobus Liefmans set up business as a brewer on the banks of the River Schelde, Oudenaarde, more than 300 years ago. The original brewing apparatus has been

retained and forms part of a living museum. It was around 1900 that Liefmans started filling matura on tanks with black cherries on a small scale. Local farmers brought their excess crops of black cherries to Liefmans and swapped them for beer. Liefmans was the first brewery to wrap every bo le by hand in ssue paper. In honour of Rosa Merckx, the first female head brewer, her signature now appears on every label. Liefmans Cuvee Brut is a deep reddish brown with slightly sweet yet gently bi er fruit flavours.

Our Daily Bread A couple of days a er returning from holiday in early October I visited Theresa Miller, landlady of The White Swan, in Sileby... It was 9.30 in the morning as Theresa let me in at the side door of the pub to the sound of builders at work. Refurbishment was in full swing and there was a wonderful aroma of baking bread. “Do you mind if I get on while we chat? I’ve bread rolls in the oven, which are nearly done, then I need to put the next lot in… Would you like a coffee?” As I followed her into the pub kitchen, she pointed to a tray on the side saying, “Oh, yes, and you can have some of this, which I’ve just made; it’s warm Chocolate Brownie ‐ a real favourite on the menu.” I felt an urge to say," Chocolate Brownie for breakfast?” but before I could get the words out Theresa had handed me a full por on in a bowl which, breakfast me or not, tasted delicious. Pouring hot water into a cafe ere, she began to tell me a bit about her life. “I’ve always wanted to cook, since I was four years old I think, and somehow I always have. My Mum and Dad weren’t too keen; they were academics at University and hoped I would follow them, but I wanted to follow my passion. My son Daniel and I moved here 33 years ago as tenants for Ansell's. My husband had died whilst we were running The Packe Arms in Hoton and in those days it was quite rare for breweries to allow a single person to take over a tenancy ‐ so we had to look elsewhere. Back in 1982 the big brewers were forced to split up their

Page 32

estates by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission and to separate beer produc on from their tenanted estates, so the rules were becoming more relaxed.” As she spoke, Theresa was busy replacing baked bread rolls from the main oven with more racks of unbaked ones. “These rolls are the talk of the pub you know ‐ everyone comments upon how good they taste. We serve them warmed and fresh with every meal.” Can’t wait to get my teeth into one of those, thought I, as she pressed the plunger on the cafe ere and poured coffee into two mugs. A er two weeks in the US of A, where they just cannot make a decent cup of tea, I was fed up of 57 varie es of coffee but I have to admit that this one was far be er than anything I’d tasted over there ‐ or here come to think of it! The food prepara on never stopped as she cha ed; potatoes

were peeled, tomatoes were cut and salads assembled. “As well as serving food six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday, we have a thriving outside catering business, too; although it’s changed over the years as all the factories have gone from the village. We’ll travel anywhere within a ten mile radius and can provide for almost any occasion ‐ christenings, weddings, funerals and all manner of business events.” But clearly, the proof of the pudding, as well as the daily bread, starters and main courses, is in the ea ng. Therefore, on October 11th, a week before the comple on of the refurbishment, Mary and I booked in for Sunday lunch. (We also looked at the menus for the week and the choice is just amazing). Our verdict: good, honest food, perfectly cooked and served promptly. We’ll certainly be back. Oh, and yes, the bread rolls were awesome!

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra These small domed, pedunculated or plate-like growths are a type of Seborrhoeic Keratosis and, like them, tend to increase in size and number with age. They are very common on adults with black skin, tending to form in clusters or chains on the face, neck, upper back and chest. It is

es mated that up to one‐third of people with Type VI skin are affected. There is a strong likelihood of a hereditary factor and there is some sugges on that they are caused by a defect within the hair follicles. Women are more likely to be affected than men. Like Seborrhoeic Keratosis, the lesions are benign and no treatment is necessary unless for cosme c reasons. If removal is required, the precision afforded by advanced electrolysis can normally

History of Glass The first window glass manufactured in Britain was broadsheet glass in Roman mes... An elongated balloon of glass was blown, the ends were cut off and the resul ng cylinder was split and fla ened on an iron plate. Glass produced like this was of very poor quality ‐ at best translucent ‐ and due to the small size of the sheets was made into leaded lights. By the 1600s this was replaced by crown glass; this involved blowing the glass as in the broadsheet process, spinning it whilst s ll molten and cu ng the furthest end off, leaving a plate or crown of glass. By 1700 polished plate glass was developed which involved cas ng molten glass onto a flat stone table

then grinding and polishing it by hand. In 1834 an improved cylinder sheet process was introduced from Germany. This was similar to the broadsheet process but allowed much larger sheets to be produced. The withdrawal of the window tax in 1845 resulted in instant price reduc ons of 75% and more. 1898 saw the inven on of wired glass from Pilkington giving rise to the modern day method of mass produc on of glass sheets. Laminated glass, invented in 1903 by incorpora ng a thin plas c film between two sheets of glass, increased the safety and security of much larger windows which could be glazed undivided by glazing bars. Double glazing was introduced in the

1960s and con nued to develop through to the modern day where moisture absorbent spacers are sealed between two panes of glass leaving an insula ng air‐space. Further reduc ons in the transmission of heat through these units have been achieved by filling the space with argon and by the use of special coa ngs or films to reflect infra‐red radia on.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Tom and the Pink Cowboy Hat The squeal from the hallway went through me like fingernails down a blackboard. “Tom! They’re here!” My Dearly Beloved appeared waving an envelope. With trepida on, I lowered my copy of Ford Mondeo Monthly. “Look Tom! Our Robbie ckets!” Horrendous images flashed through my mind ‐ a football stadium filled with pink cowboy hats, a million empty plas c wine bo les and endless traffic jams on the way home. “But what about my nnitus? You know I can’t stand loud noises. It’s all that high pitched wailing and out of tune singing.” “Well, you know what a Robbie crowd is like.” “I wasn’t talking about the crowd...” “For goodness sake Tom, stop being an old fuddy duddy! And we’ve got priority ckets, so if we get in early enough we’ll be right at the front!” Amazingly, the thought of standing on a penalty spot for five hours in the drizzling rain wasn’t really doing it for me. So, a er parking the Mondeo Ghia X a handy four miles from the ground, we began our pilgrimage ‐ past fat men with mullets selling fake T‐shirts, the pungent smell of greasy burgers and the wizened touts yelling “Any spare ckets?”. Eventually we made it to turns le B, where the stewards held us behind a

Page 46

line un l...three, two, one, go! ‐ we sprinted across the pitch towards the front of the stage. I looked across at a fellow husband who was clearly thinking the same thing as me.

I watched as the woman took another slug of warm Chardonnay and tried to work out why anyone would stand in a cold stadium for five hours to see someone they hated.

And Tom Hughes sprints the length of the pitch ‐ and he scores!

Then, at last, the lights dimmed, the decibels increased and Mr Williams bounded onto the stage. I pushed my earplugs in as far as they would go. Then, something weird happened. I started to tap my feet. An hour and a half and a bo le of Blossom Hill later I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Excuse me sir, but can you remove your pink cowboy hat? I can’t see the stage?” Taking hold of my hand, my Dearly Beloved yelled into my ear, “Tom Hughes? Tell me that’s not a tear in your eye?”

There the exhilara on ended as we parked up at the front and, surrounded by thousands of fans, stared at an empty black stage for three hours. Vague memories of my schoolboy panic a acks filtered through my mind. I was trapped! I was just in the middle of trying not to think about figh ng my way to the gents when three ladies wearing matching blinged‐up T‐shirts took turns to barge into me. One of the trio tried to focus her eyes onto my face. “Wha’sem yellow things in your ears?” “Pardon? Oh these ear plugs? It’s quite simple madam, I can’t stand Robbie Williams.”

“Sarah, don’t be so silly!” And through it all, she offers me protec on, a lot of love and affec on.... Follow Tom on Twi er @groomsdaybook

Spiders and Snakes... ...dragons, millipedes, cockroaches, rats and giant snails all visited The Green Place in Sileby when they hosted a creepy crawlies handling experience day during the October half term break. Kristan Harness from Sileby, who runs Lion Learners, brought along a dozen or more of her exo c pets for the children to get to know. Neither the creatures nor the children seemed in the least bit fazed by this, in fact all the living beings in the yurt were having the me of their lives. Sunny, the bearded dragon pictured here with Kristan, definitely didn’t want to return to his cage. Of course we all know, don’t we, that children revel in things we adults may find strange, and even frightening some mes, and spending an hour or so there certainly gave credence to the saying ‘feel the fear and do it anyway.’

Page 48

Kristan asked Mary if she would like to meet Tia, a Chilean Rose Tarantula as big as the palm of her hand and Mary absolutely hates spiders. Kristan explained that Tia would just rest when held and wouldn’t run or make a leap for the back of her neck to commence spinning a web in Lord of the Rings fashion. With hardly a flinch Mary held the spider and quickly grew to enjoy the experience. “Once I had Tia in my hand all the fear disappeared. She was so gentle and mid, light and so ‐ not a bit scary.” Lion Learners have science sessions to fit into the new primary curriculum for each year group as well as KS1 literacy sessions. You can book Kristan with her creatures great and small for a children's party, a community event or perhaps to dispel whatever fears you may have about creeping and crawling things...

Home is where the Heart is And you’ll find a heart-warming range of home ware and gi s at 135 Sibson Road, Birstall, next door to our longest serving adver ser - Carpets of Choice... Shona Ra ray, owner of Filigree Heart, has travelled the world sourcing and buying home ware products over the last dozen years for two of Leicestershire's most successful retailers ‐ Next and Dunelm. Then in July this year she took the plunge and opened a shop of her own.

New shop opened in Birstall

Gifts for a loved one, or home inspiration. There’s plenty to get excited about this Winter at Filigree Heart.

Shona certainly has an eye for quality and detail; on my visit in mid October she was receiving the first of her Christmas stock. With an air of enthusiasm and excitement she showed me some of the hundreds of items on display. There’s something to suit all budgets and many items were under £15 which I would have judged to be a lot more expensive. You can buy furniture too ‐ even a kingsize bed which, incidentally, was one of her first sales. “And we’re offering a new service for Christmas,” said Shona, “you can hold your own private Christmas shopping party and we’ll open the shop in an evening just for you and your friends.
