Soar Valley Life Time and Tide...

(and deadlines!) wait for no man! The original phrase predates modern English, just as the indefinite progress of things past, present and future and the relentless ebb and flow of the oceans.

Paul Atchinson

Painting at the Gallery “I spent a most pleasant couple of hours with artist Paul Atchinson and Martin Paling of the Gallery in Sutton Bonington on the 1st August. As we chatted and drank tea, it was fascinating to watch Paul create his art. No rush, a little shade here, a brush stroke there and slowly the scene emerged. It must be very satisfying to have such a talent…” Steve Johns

“A very welcoming, family friendly place, full of beautiful things. Great for a pot of tea while the children play in the garden.”

When we began to create Soar Valley Life in April 2012, we didn’t realise how busy life would become. In the early days we outsourced its distribu on, first to Royal Mail and then to a private contractor. Every month, with the magazine dispatched to the printer, we’d have a li le respite, a gathering of our thoughts, a dying of our desks and a bit of a rest before we marched on again with the next issue. Then, earlier this year, having decided to take over our own distribu on, we soon realised that the li le monthly break we enjoyed was to be no more. Aha, but wait a minute! Mary and I meet regularly with fellow magazine owners, to share problems and pick each others brains, besides having a nice meal and spending me with like minded people. We posed the problem of ge ng so busy we were beginning to feel we were on a treadmill which was speeding up. We wanted to take a holiday in September for our tenth wedding anniversary but didn’t see how it could be managed. One of our group asked, “But isn’t your magazine a bi‐monthly? You split your area into two? “Yes.” we said. “So why produce a new magazine every month? One half of your readers don’t see the next month’s edi on and vice versa. You need to do a split distribu on.” The pennies dropped loud and clear. So, for this issue, all 30,000 of you will receive the same magazine ‐ albeit a month apart. Simple! We’ve also le out our What’s On for now but, with more me to organise and plan, we’ll be back bigger & brighter for Christmas. And we’re off to the USA next month taking a bit of me back for us. So, those two adversaries might not wait, but it seems we can slow them down a bit to steal a li le space for ourselves… See you in November!

Dazzling Dahlias Dahlias are brilliant for extending the season in your borders or pa o containers; they are hard to beat for late summer and autumn colour and they make great cut flowers too! They come in all shapes and sizes and are available in lots of different colours so you can be assured of finding one to suit. If dead headed regularly they flower on and on right up

to the first frosts. They are tender tubers so need to be protected from frost either by li ing and storing at the end of the season or in milder areas protec ng with deep mulch. They are tolerant of a wide range of soil types and situa ons but are best planted in a well drained posi on in full sun. The Dahlia pictured here is called ‘Gerrie Hoek’. Claire Jones

Check and pick over plants regularly, removing pests, yellowing or dead leaves and faded flowers before rot develops. Slugs are o en found lurking underneath pots. When bringing plants inside, check carefully for pests and diseases they may have picked up in the garden, par cularly red spider mite, mealy bug and scale insect. Unhappy looking plants can always be pped out of the pot to examine the root‐ball for signs of over or under‐watering, or for soil‐based pests like vine weevil.

Clean the glasshouse to prevent pests and diseases from overwintering in corners Take care when watering indoor plants not to wet the leaves They will take longer to dry out in the cooler weather and dampness could promote development of fungal disease. It is also best to water in the morning, so that the plants have me to dry off before the cold nights.

Gardening ps for Autumn: Trees & shrubs

Plan ng and moving If the weather is already autumnal, you can now plant and move shrubs and trees without having to worry excessively about their survival and establishment. Shrubs planted now will get off to a flying start next spring, as they will have had all winter to se le in.

Pruning and training Prune late‐summer flowering shrubs such as Helianthemum (rock rose) and give evergreen

hedges a final trim to make sure they are in shape for winter. Climbing roses can be pruned once they have finished flowering; side shoots from the main branches can be cut back to a couple of buds. Any dead, diseased or spindly growth should be cut out and new young shoots ed in to the supports, from the base. If there is an old, thick and woody, unproduc ve stem, it can be removed from the base to s mulate more vigorous growth.

Propaga on Take semi‐ripe cu ngs of evergreen shrubs

such as Cistus, Ceanothus and Viburnum. Take hardwood cu ngs of roses, choosing well‐ ripened, healthy shoots.

Nicky Morgan MP Congratula ons to all our local students who have received their A level and GCSE results recently and best wishes to them with the next stage of their educa on and training. I know how much hard work everyone has put into their exams and thank you to the schools, teachers and families who supported each student. I would also like to welcome to the local area any students star ng at Loughborough University this autumn. Our most local and highly successful university goes from strength to strength. Loughborough is now in the top 5 universi es in the Na onal Student Survey and is rated second in the Times Higher Educa on Student Experience Survey. One piece of disappoin ng recent news has been the Government’s decision to pause the electrifica on of the Midland Mainline. I have spoken to Network Rail about the decision and the knock‐on effects. Further to my conversa ons with him, the Secretary of State for Transport has wri en to me to confirm the project has not been cancelled and I will be mee ng him shortly to press for a new metable for the full electrifica on project. Many readers will know of my commitment to be er mental health provision locally and na onally. In my role as Secretary of State for Educa on I have focused on mental health support for children and young people and be er joint working between schools and the health services. We have a long way to go on this but the Government has pledged over £1 billion to be spent on CAMHs in this Parliament. Locally I have been working with a talented and commi ed group of people on a proposal to set up a community drop‐in facility for young adults with mental health needs and we hope this will also provide advice and assistance for their families and carers too. The Loughborough Wellbeing Project has moved a step closer with its launch at the beginning of July and we have a venue at Loughborough library. More details will follow but if you are interested in finding out more please do get in touch. You can email me at nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk or call 01509 262723

According to Taste There really is something for everyone in the Kinds of Queniborough frozen ready meals brochure... I counted 134 meal choices in the booklet and there’s more on their website. Also there are new addi ons at regular intervals. I’d say you could easily be spoilt for choice here. May I offer a piece of advice before you rush to the phone? Just as you should never go out and about food shopping when you are hungry, best not to choose your week’s meals from the catalogue when you are at your most hungry. It’s so easy to choose though, there are sec ons on all the various meal op ons ‐ Beef, Pork & Liver, Chicken & Turkey, Lamb, Fish, A La Carte, Vegetarian, Pureed, hot and cold desserts, as well as sec ons for diabe cs and ethnic and specialist diets. However, there’s a lot more to Kinds than you might at first think. When I visited Lorne Kind he showed me their walk‐in freezer whilst we cha ed. “Because we visit our customers regularly, we get to know many of them as friends. We’re o en asked

to pick up a daily paper, or perhaps some fruit to go with their meals. We always stop for a li le chat if it’s appropriate ‐ o en we might be the only visitor they have that day and we are always happy to help if we can. And, of course, all our staff arrive wearing full uniform with an iden ty badge so you feel safe and secure about who’s at the door. Our delivery service is free and there is no commitment at all. You pay cash or cheque at the door and you can ring your order through any me during normal business hours Monday to Friday. You can also order on line if you are internet savvy and one of our team will ring you back to confirm we have your order correct. We hold a 5 star health and hygiene ra ng so you can be absolutely sure that the meals you choose are the very best that they can be. All meals are perfectly frozen when they reach you and we’ll even put them in your freezer for you.” Remember that advice I men oned? I’ve just no ced the GO LARGE sec on in the brochure ‐ and I’m starving right now!

Moss Solicitors’ FREE Review and Advisory Service helps get your business on track It’s understandable that businesses prefer to focus on what they do, rather than on paperwork, especially when it may not seem relevant. The result is that many businesses lack essen al and highly useful documents, some mes meaning they are in breach of legal obliga ons. Example 1 Staff are en tled to a wri en statement of certain par culars of their employment; employers who fail to provide this within two months of employment star ng could find themselves subject to an Employment Tribunal claim, and in certain situa ons liable to pay up to 4 weeks’ salary. Example 2 If partners in a business do not have a Partnership Agreement, a set of default rules applies. The problem is that the default rules may not be what the partners really wanted. This can mean that partners who put in the most effort don’t end up reaping the most reward.

Example 3 Andy, Bhavina and Charlie are equal director shareholders in a private company. They do not have a Shareholders’ Agreement or a bespoke set of Ar cles, meaning there is no restric on upon the transfer of shares. Bhavina dies, and her sister, Daljit, inherits Bhavina’s shares, despite Daljit never having shown any interest in the company. Andy and Charlie are unhappy that the business will now be par ally controlled by Daljit. Had they had a bespoke set of Ar cles, and/or a Shareholders’ Agreement, they could have given themselves the right to acquire Bhavina’s shares upon her death. Such problems led Moss Solicitors to develop their FREE Business Review Service. Businesses complete a very short ques onnaire about their business; Moss review the answers, iden fy where the business might be exposed, and make sugges ons as to how it could strengthen its opera ons from a legal perspec ve, and provide a no‐ obliga on es mate for supplying the missing documents. If you would like advice or assistance to improve your business, please contact: Laura Anderson l.anderson@moss-solicitors.co.uk, or Nick Gay n.gay@moss-solicitors.co.uk

Vive la France! ‘A UNIQUE HOLIDAY OPPORTUNITY’ reads the heading on the informa on pack for La Folle e, Tony Sco orn’s villa in Normandy... “One day!” I keep saying to myself and that li le voice shouts even louder a er reading again the details of this very en cing holiday villa. Mary and I have never visited this region of France and with so many war me commemora ons this year we have been overwhelmed with reasons to visit. Normandy and the surrounding area holds so much witness to those bi er struggles of man against man during the 20th century wars; I am told that it can change your outlook on life. When I first met Tony Sco orn about five years ago, before Soar Valley Life began, he told me about his place in France and we wanted to book it for a family holiday. It would have been perfect, but we couldn’t all manage the dates that year and since star ng the magazine we’ve never found the me.

Read the details for yourself and I bet you’ll be thinking of France for next year’s holiday ‐ this place is perfect for a family with Mum & Dad, the kids and grandma and granddad too, having five bedrooms, a large garden, conservatory and parking for 3 cars. The cobbled streets of historic Honfleur beckon only 10 miles away; sampling the cheeses of Camembert and Pont‐l’Eveque, local ciders and of course the world renowned apple brandy, Calvados, will further tempt you. Normandy’s wide sandy beaches rival any in the world and are only a few minutes away by car. A holiday here has such a lot to offer everyone ‐ Euro Disney is a couple of hours away and there are 35 golf courses in the area. The 10,000 American war graves at Colleville Saint Laurent are only a short drive. And, yet another reminder of man against man at war, this one from a millennium ago in Bayeaux when a chap named William came a‐conquering. “Mary! One day, eh?”

Take your family and enjoy the real France in your own way on the outskirts of the small market town of Beuzeville – population 3,600 - in the Haute-Normandie region of Northern France. Secluded yet only a short walk to shops, restaurants and cafés. On the same line of latitude as Jersey and Guernsey, enjoying average temperatures 5 degrees above the UK with a lot less rain fall. Close by: Normandy Beaches, American Cemetery, Bayeaux Tapestry, Honfleur, golf courses, horse riding, windsurfing, land yachting, sailing, canoeing, fishing. About half an hour from Le Havre Port and only two hours from Paris and Euro Disney.

Refurbished by local Charnwood tradesmen to a very high standard: dishwasher, washing machine, fully fitted kitchen, new central heating, outside Bar-be-cue, 20 sq metre conservatory, bunk beds for the kids, Sony 32” flat screen TV and Blu-ray DVD. Na onal Minimum Wage Campaign

Employees have a legal right to be paid the Na onal Minimum Wage and HM Revenue & Customs are running a campaign to help employers check they are paying the correct amount of wages to their employees... For example, ps are not to be included when calcula ng if the minimum wage is being paid. If an employer hasn’t been paying the Na onal Minimum Wage they should advise HM Revenue & Customs without delay by submi ng a no fica on form and then comple ng a disclosure form. This will prevent both a penalty being charged and also the employer’s name being placed on the public list of employers not paying the minimum wage. From 1st October 2015 the Na onal Minimum Wage will increase as follows: Workers aged 21 years and over: £6.70 per hour 18 – 20 years inclusive: £5.30 per hour 16 – 17 years inclusive: £3.87 per hour Appren ces under 19 years of age or in their first year of an appren ceship: £3.30 per hour Finally, a compulsory Na onal Living Wage is due to be introduced in April 2016 for all workers over 25 years of age of £7.20 per hour. Three Simple Steps to Ageing Gracefully Drink a Lot of Water Hydra ng is one of the most important things you can do to keep looking young. To keep your body healthy and hydrated, try drinking 2â€?3 litres of water per day and go easy on caeinated beverages and alcohol, which dry your skin. Exercise Regularly Studies have shown that exercising regularly decreases the chance of chronic disease, depression and cogni ve decline; it can keep your skin looking younger too. Exercise can reduce inamma on in the body which keeps your immune system strong to ďŹ ght o illness as you get older. Sleep Well Lack of adequate sleep, especially chronic sleep loss, can increase the likelihood of ageâ€?related disease. When you’re low on sleep your hormones can become out of balance and your blood pressure can increase, raising your risk of heart problems and stroke. Lack of sleep can also interfere with insulin sensi vity, which increases your risk of diabetes. Establishing a rou ne pa ern of going to bed and waking up around the same me each day is the most important thing you can do to establish good sleep habits.

Top Tech for University The tools and tech that will make your beloved’s uni life be er

Images le to right: Microso Office 365 for University; Leatherman Charge mul tool; Unbranded MiFi wireless adapter for 4G/3G phones; TDK wireless speakers University is a me for studying, socialising and watching cult movies, and gadgets play a crucial part in all of those ac vi es. So what technology should your teen or twentysomething be packing? A laptop or a tablet is essen al, and now that Windows 10 is available there are stacks of great laptops at rock‐bo om prices. Most of the market is concentrated in the sub‐£300 price range, but if you can afford to spend a li le bit more you’ll be rewarded with be er screens, more storage and smoother processors ‐ all of which come in handy for both work and play. Don’t forget about a printer, too, but make sure you look into the cost of cartridges: many firms use the Gille e model, where the razor is given away at a loss and the money is made on the blades. Inkjet printers are notorious for this, so a printer that costs £30 might cost twice as much to run as a printer cos ng just a li le bit more. Your child will need so ware too. Microso Office is the standard, although some specialist courses may require specialist so ware such as sta s cal analysis so ware.

Page 42

If it’s Office, though, the Office 365 for University deal is superb value for money: It’s £59.99 for a four‐year subscrip on that covers 2 PCs, Macs or tablets, including iPads and Android devices. It also offers 1TB of online storage. If you don’t go for Office, it’s s ll worth looking at Microso ’s free OneNote program, which is available for PCs and Macs, iPads, iPhones and Android and which is a truly superb note‐taking applica on. Apps can be great for non‐uni things too: we love Paprika for storing recipes, Readly for magazines and Spo fy or Apple Music for tunes. A few low‐tech devices are smart buys too. A simple carbon monoxide detector can be a genuine life‐saver, especially in rented accommoda on where landlords don’t always carry out the checks and maintenance they should. A Leatherman mul ‐tool or one of its many imitators is great too, offering pliers, wire cu ers, files, screwdrivers, bo le openers and can openers in a single device. One important issue for students is internet access. If it’s available in their flat or halls of residence, great, but if it isn’t you might be be er off with mobile broadband rather than

messing around with the hassle of fixed‐line broadband connec ons with their minimum contracts. Three’s MiFi device is a li le box that connects to the phone network and offers a wireless connec on for phones, tablets and computers. Prices start at £10.87 per month and the devices work anywhere with 4G data coverage, which means most big towns and ci es. Another wireless item to consider is a wireless speaker. The best ones use Bluetooth to connect to computers, phones or tablets, and if you avoid the very low end of the market you can get surprisingly good sound for surprisingly li le money. Decent wireless speakers start at around £200, although it’s possible to spend much more. Unless you’re feeling flush and your child’s really into music, though, there’s no real need to do that. Last but not least, there’s the smartphone. In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have one, a decent Android phone such as the Motorola Moto G costs less than £150. It’s easy to program your own number into the speed dial and create a wallpaper that says CALL YOUR MOTHER.

Why have an Eye Test? Un l something goes wrong, most of us take our eyes for granted. An Optometrist can o en detect problems in advance and remedy the defect before it’s too late... An optometrist is a professional who prescribes spectacles or contact lenses and a whole lot more besides. During the next few issues of Soar Valley Life Vinesh Patel of Inter Eyecare Op cians in Rothley will be explaining what an optometrist does. He’ll also be answering ques ons such as: • Who should have an eye test and at what age? • How o en? • Why some groups of pa ents should have more frequent eye tests. • Your responsibili es as a driver as required by the DVLA • Who to approach when things go wrong To become a qualified optometrist a student will spend three years at university to obtain the undergraduate degree. A further year is spent as a pre‐registra on student, working as an optometrist, but supervised by a qualified optometrist. Then it is necessary to register with the General Op cal Council (GOC) – a body with powers to suspend or erase an optometrist!

In that four years of study a vast amount of me is spent learning about eye diseases and condi ons and all the current remedies and treatments available. Surprisingly, medical students, on average, spend only 2 to 4 weeks studying on eyes, and most GPs may not have had any further training on eyes since their undergraduate years! So the next me you are having your eyes tested, be comforted by the fact that your optometrist is doing a whole lot more than just telling you if you need spectacles or not. Vinesh Patel, principal optometrist at Inter Eyecare Op cians of Rothley, is our new eye healthcare correspondent and will be featuring in future edi ons of Soar Valley Life.

Walk instruc ons 2 1/2 Miles

1 1/4 Hours

Use the car park at Ba ram Wood, east of Ba ram village (off the B585), south of Coalville. No facili es. This is a very simple oblong shaped walk, but as always when walking through trees there is some scope for ge ng lost!

1 Go back to the car park entrance and turn right along this access road and the wide grass track between hedges. Con nue on the right hand field edge and keep direc on across the open field.

2 At an unmarked point, turn right, there is normally a track in the grass parallel with a shallow gully to the s le in the dip. Cross and bear le to the yellow top marker post, go over the footbridge and keep direc on over the s le on to the hedged bridleway.

3 Turn right and follow the track to the farm buildings. Turn le in front of the barn with the black doors and immediate right at a yellow top post, between farm buildings. Carry on to the marker post on the right and turn right through the narrow fence gap. 4 Take the gravelly road slight right and go over the crossroads of tracks, bear le past an ivy covered derelict footbridge, then right past a yellow top post, keep upslope to where this track swings right. Keep ahead on the grass track to a marker post with several marker discs on it. 5 Turn le to a more substan al stony track and follow this track bearing right, the car park and the star ng point are on the le . © Clive Brown All our walks are compiled by Clive Brown You can order any of his walking close to guides from www.walkingcloseto.com See also his new book Walks for all Ages in Cambridgeshire at www.bradwellbooks.com/walksforallagescambridgeshire.html

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Monday morning. 6.51am. “Bzzz!” The dreaded alarm, indifferent to my protesta ons, con nued with its incessant, rasping reveille. On and on it went un l from somewhere beneath the duck down I heard mumbles of complaint from My Dearly Beloved. “Tom, it’s my day off!” “It’s the alarm on this new phone. Why did you talk me into upgrading?” Sarah, emerging tousled and grumpy from her lair, said, “Look, you just put your thumb on this bu on and... there.” Miraculously, my phone fell silent. Slumping back onto my Egyp an co on pillow case (a wedding present from work) I said, “You know what, I really can’t be bothered listening to Nigel from accounts talk about his caravan in Rhyl. You’re not in today, why don’t I throw a sickie?”

At just a er nine we were speeding along in the Mondeo Ghia X on our way to Blackpool.

“Tom! That’s terrible.”

“Tom, this is lovely, but don’t you feel just a ny bit guilty?”

“Look, it’s cracking the flags outside. In fact don’t try and talk me out of it, I have made an execu ve decision.” Slopping around in my jim‐jams, I sipped tea in the kitchen whilst the rest of The Avenue reversed out to join the rat race. Just past eight I picked up the receiver and proceeded to cough and splu er my excuses to Michelle on recep on, whilst Sarah looked on, shaking her head.

Page 46

Kiss Me Quick hats, penny slots, all the joys of childhood re‐ captured on the blustery pier. How we giggled as our candy floss spun away into the wind that whipped in from the cruel Irish Sea.

Shaking my head, I waved my Orange Mivvi in the general direc on of the dodgems. “There are no pockets in shrouds, come on, let’s see if we can put in a whiplash claim.” So a er banging and bumping our way around the oval racetrack, we ran to the Hall of Mirrors where we began poin ng and grimacing in front of the convex and concave mirrors that

distorted our reflec ons. Sarah giggled at my strange appari on. “Tom, look how fat you are in that one!” “Er...that’s just a normal mirror.” “Oh.” Then, a er an exhilara ng ride on the Big One we decided to repair to a seaside hotel for a cocktail or two and a feast of fish and chips. Then I got the text. “Hi Tom, Brian here, I know you’re off but Nigel can’t reconcile this Garvey order.” Panic set in. “I can’t remember my sickie voice ‐ what did I sound like?” “Like someone pretending to be sick?” “Don’t joke, you’ll make me giggle.” “Look, it’s ok, you’re unwell, just ring him and get it over with.”

“Right, when the sparkler on this cocktail goes out I’ll give him a call.” “Don’t forget to move the umbrella; you don’t want that going up your nose.” A er admonishing Sarah I shook away my giggles and dialled. “Hi Brian, Tom here.” “How are you feeling mate?” “Fish and chips twice is it sir?” The waitress’s ming was perfect. We both waved our hands as Sarah grabbed the plates and shooed her away. “Tom...are you at home?” “Er yeah, just on the couch. Hang on, I’ll turn down Masterchef.”

“Any sauces madam?” Sarah shook her head violently at the confused waitress. A er managing to resolve the Garvey account I tried to end the call. “Ok Brian, please do ring back if you have any more problems.” “I will, and Tom? “Yes?” “Enjoy the cocktail.” I looked at my phone. A strange man with a big nose was staring at me. Immediately I hung up. “Well that’s a funny thing, how did he know I was drinking a cocktail?” Sarah grabbed my phone, and

then proceeded to put her head in her hands. “Tom, you face med him!” I stuck out my bo om lip and shrugged my shoulders. “Which is?” “A video call! He saw you!” On the way home I rang my network provider to explore the possibility of moving to the latest customer op on: The Downgrade. Sarah was unimpressed. “If you ask me Tom, a er today, it won’t just be your phone being downgraded.” Follow Tom @groomsdaybook groomsdaybook.com

Pets Page Why a Luxurious Bed is Important for your Elderly Dog

A comfortable place to rest their head, extra support for arthri c bones and a li le extra TLC - dogs need all of these things as they grow old. You can make their twilight years a happy me for both of you simply by being aware of the issues they face, and what you can do to help.

Self-hea ng Metallised insula on is placed below the lining, and radiates heat. Covered with a sheepskin or fleece outer layer, this would have therapeu c benefits par cularly if your house is draughty.

An orthopaedic bed with a memory foam ma ress will support their joints by moulding itself around them, helping with blood circula on and providing a comfortable place to rest. Problems such as hip

On the theme of draughty houses an elevated bed keeps your dog away from a cold floor, and is available in a range of sizes.

Cat Behaviour Why They Do The Things They Do

Apart from providing extra love and a en on, you need to make sure their ea ng and sleeping areas are free from other smells, and safe from intruders.

Marking, scratching and climbing are common feline behaviours, but depending on the circumstances, may not always be welcome. Here are some of the reasons why cats behave the way they do, and what you can do about it. Marking This is o en a territorial reac on to stress – maybe the fear that other cats could invade their space.

Scratching This is an inherent trait in all cats, and enables them to keep their claws sharp should they need to defend themselves. A scratching post is the best way to prevent damage to your furniture, and spraying catnip on and around it may help to distract them from chair and

Luxury materials One of the most important considera ons is the material used to make the bed and ma ress. You can buy alpaca fibre and so fleece fillings, but it’s also important to think about prac cality, so zip‐off covers should be a priority to maintain hygiene. A luxurious place to sleep is important for dogs of all ages, but par cularly so for those in their later years. table legs. Scent glands in their paws also mean that they may be scratching as a way to mark their territory. Climbing It won’t be unusual to see your cat hanging from the top of a curtain when you go into a room, clinging on for dear life having got to the top and then become stuck. Their natural sense of adventure, plus the need to run off a bit of energy, makes them do things like this. You may even find them looking down on you from the top of a door. It’s usually because they feel more confident when up high, or are simply showing their fun side.

The Naked Eye Planets October: Saturn in Libra lies low in the south-west after sunset and disappears into the twilight glow by the month’s end. Brilliant Venus rises at 3 am in Leo and beams magnificently at - 4.3. Mars follows close behind, rising at 3.45 am and is 250 times fainter at + 1.7 and then ¾ of an hour later Jupiter rises at - 1.6. on the 9th of October you’ll see Venus adjacent to Leo’s brightest star Regulus with the crescent Moon close by. Mercury makes its best

Comet Homeland Almost the last ever photo of Comet ISON in November 2013 only days before its closest approach to our Sun where it evaporated into gas and dust.

The Oort-Opik Cloud It is always thrilling to see a new comet for the first time. Do you remember Hale-Bopp in 1997 or Comet ISON (above) which featured in our first ever astronomy page in issue 22 back in January of last year? Where do they come from? There is a huge sphere which surrounds our solar system containing possibly billions of comet-like objects, varying in size from a few grams up to millions of tons. They could be described as dirty snowballs as they are made up of ice and rock left over from the creation of the planets. Comet homeland sits around the solar system at a distance of 15 to 50,000AUs (1 AU - Astronomical Unit - is equal to the radius of the orbit of our Earth around our Sun). The nearest star to our Sun is at about 300,000 AUs and, as our system rotates around our galaxy, the debris in the Oort-Opik cloud can be shifted out of its homeland by the gravity of the nearby star into the gravitational pull of our Sun and thus a new comet is born.

morning appearance this year low in the east, increasing in brightness from + 0.4 on the 11th to - 0.9 at the month’s end. November: In the small hours of the first few nights of November we’re treated to a lovely tableau of brilliant Venus passing less than one degree from Mars with Jupiter to the upper right. Jupiter at magnitude - 1.7 rises ever earlier from 2 am to half past midnight as the month progresses. In contrast Venus is

heading down towards the Sun, starting the month rising at 2.30 am and ending the month at 3.30 am. Resplendent at magnitude - 4.2 and with a small telescope you’ll see that it is only half lit by the Sun. Mars creeps above Venus early in the month and remains between Jupiter and Venus flickering fainter than both at magnitude + 1.6. Mercury and Saturn are lost in the Sun’s glare throughout this month.

Around Britain

Famous Streets & Roads 1. Chapel Street, Stra ord-upon-Avon, Warwickshire ‐ Once standing on the corner of Chapel Street in Stra ord was New Place, the final home of William Shakespeare. Built in 1483, Shakespeare purchased the house in 1597 but it’s believed that he didn’t move into it un l 1610. He remained there un l his death, in 1616. 2. Ebenezer Place, Wick ‐ When Mackays Hotel in Wick was built in 1883, it was decided that the building’s shortest side nevertheless cons tuted a street in its own right, and so, despite being just 206cm (81 inches) long, Ebenezer Place was created. The street is now officially recognised as the shortest street in the world. 3. Ffordd Penllech, Gwynedd ‐ A prime contender for the steepest road in Britain, Ffordd Penllech in Harlech leads down from Harlech Castle in Gwynedd. So steep that it has been signposted ‘unsuitable for motors’, the one‐way road (that is, downward traffic only) has a gradient of 18°, or almost 1:3. 4. Parliament Street, Exeter ‐ A plaque at the entrance to Parliament Street in Exeter states that it is ‘believed to be the narrowest street in the world’. Although that honour actually belongs to a street in Reutlingen, Germany, at just 64cm (25 inches) at its narrowest point, Parliament Street is certainly a contender for the narrowest named street in Britain. 5. Pudding Lane, London ‐ Pudding Lane is perhaps one of the most infamous addresses in London, having once been the site of Thomas Farriner’s bakery where, shortly a er midnight on September 2 1666, the Great Fire of London broke out. Within three days, the fire destroyed almost four‐fi hs of the city. © Taken from The Bri sh Isles: A Trivia Gaze eer by Paul Anthony Jones

We Don’t Have to Talk We sell sleek ‘built-in’ gas fires; highly efficient, clean and operated at the pressing of a remote bu on from your mobile or tablet. Immediately, flames will leap into life and your house will be a home when you return. There is nothing enigma c about our fires. A command is received, a valve opens and a spark lights the fire. A spark as bright as a thought. My fire squeaks when the door is swung open and I have to be careful when I place fresh logs onto the embers in case I burn myself and strangely, I like this. With the door shut and the

flames safely contained my wine tastes sweeter and the rain dashing against the window pane is a bi erness expelled. Enigma c? A fire is gas burning in oxygen! And a touch is mere communica on. Our showrooms are full of fires, many lit. Pay us a visit, we’ll try and sell you one. But no. It’s not quite like that. As highly trained and knowledgeable as our team are they o en fall silent when demonstra ng a fire and a poke in the ribs is required to bring them back to the present. Our fires are the stuff that dreams are made of.

Empha cally, no! Our fires are not enigma c. They are func onal hea ng appliances for prac cal people who want heat for their houses when they return from work, from the motorway network, from the supermarket on cold wet nights; they are most definitely not for dreamers and poets. ‘With all the numberless goings on in life, / Inaudible as dreams! the thin blue flame / Lies on my low burnt fire and quivers not; / Only that film which flu ers on the grate, / S ll flu ers there, the sole unquiet thing.’ Come and have coffee with us; we don’t have to talk.

Trade Windows Open to the Public

Leicester Window Supplies Ltd moved into smart new premises nearly two years ago in what was formerly the Golf Shop at 1309 Melton Road, Syston... One of Leicester’s well established window suppliers, they have been trading successfully for almost 12 years, and were previously based in Abbey Court Industrial Estate, near Leicester’s Space Centre. Director Mick Clayton, who has over 15 years experience in the window supplies business, has been delighted with the company’s new base. He said: “Acquiring the new premises made good business sense and has resulted in significant efficiency savings. This is good news for both ourselves and our customers, as we’ll be able to keep our prices at a very compe ve level.”

The company supplies windows to the building trade across Leicestershire and Rutland and has a good reputa on for customer service and reliability. Their par cular strength is their fast turnaround, as director Mahesh Bhagat explained: “Builders o en need windows or bi‐folds in a hurry. We’re frequently asked, ‘Can you supply by next Monday?’ We can usually oblige.” The Syston premises offer plenty of showroom space with windows and several fully opera onal bi‐ fold doors on display. Trade customers are encouraged to bring their clients to the showroom to try the products out and check the quality before ordering. Another benefit of the move has been an increase in domes c enquiries. Mick Clayton says: “The prominent posi on of the new premises, on a very busy road with our own parking bays

in front, has resulted in a lot of sales enquiries from the general public. It’s enabled us to deal more easily with domes c customers as we can provide a full package from design through to installa on by our own team.” Visit the showroom to view several fully opera onal bi-fold doors on display

Graham Proud recommends... Anchor Steam Beer Anchor Steam® Beer owes its deep amber colour, thick, creamy head, and rich, dis nc ve flavour to a historic brewing process like none other. It is a process that combines deep respect for cra brewing tradi on with many decades of evolu on to arrive at a unique approach: a blend of pale and caramel malts, fermenta on with lager yeast at warmer ale temperatures in shallow open‐air fermenters and gentle carbona on

in their cellars through an all‐ natural process called kräusening. The name likely relates to the original prac ce of fermen ng the beer on San Francisco’s roo ops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermen ng beer, crea ng steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any Californian or West Coast beer brewed under these condi ons, today the name “Steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of their flagship brand ‐ San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradi on since 1896.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Pale Ale began as a home brewer’s dream, grew into an icon, and inspired countless brewers to follow a passion of their own. Its unique pine and grapefruit aromas from the use of whole‐cone American hops have fascinated beer drinkers for decades and made this beer a classic; yet it remains new, complex and surprising to thousands of beer drinkers every day. It is—as it always has been— all natural, bo le condi oned and refreshingly bold.

Celebrating 100 Years of Ladybird Books The creative world of Ladybird Books is being celebrated by a centenary exhibition at Charnwood Museum in Loughborough, Leicestershire... Open until Sunday, November 1, the exhibition showcases more than 40 original pieces of artwork from Ladybird including Cinderella, Shopping with Mother and Peter and Jane. Visitors to the free museum in Queen’s Park can learn more about the history of the company and its impact on the market town thanks to official collections on loan from Ladybird Books Ltd and The University of Reading. The history of the iconic brand, which first launched in Loughborough a hundred years ago this year, is also commemorated throughout the museum, with a Ladybird corner inviting youngsters and adults to snuggle up with a book. The original Ladybird that featured on the Beeches Road factory and a spotted chair that reads to you can also be found. Charnwood Museum is run in partnership by Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council and celebrates the history of the borough of Charnwood. The exhibits reflect the history, geology and industries of the area and include chances to handle rocks from Charnwood’s volcanic past, walk beneath the giant

oak tree, investigate the 4,000 year-old burial of the Cossington Boy or zoom-in on a fly’s eye. Youngsters and adults can also take a look at the famous Barrow Kipper, a Jurassic marine reptile that ‘swims’ under the floor of the museum. Swimming is also a key part of the museum’s history, as the building nestled in Queen’s Park was once home to a Victorian swimming pool. The pool can still be found under the floor of the existing museum. For further information visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwood_museum or call 01509 233754 or email museum@charnwood.gov.uk Charnwood Museum opening hours: (Apr-Sept) Tuesday - Saturday 10am-4.30pm, Sunday 2pm-5pm (Closed Mondays)

Our front cover photo is by John Brown, a member of the Facebook Group Leicester Peoples Photographic Gallery, who became interested in photography a er seeing a photo his son had taken of a running deer in Bradgate Park... “I was inspired by the photo and decided to take up wildlife photography. I purchased a Sony Digital SLR, the same make as my son’s, so that he could help me out with the se ngs and opera on. I like to use a macro lens as you can see far more detail than with the unaided eye! I also enjoy astronomy photography.” We’ll have another front cover from John in due course, meanwhile see John’s photos on flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/johnjbrown
