Soar Valley Life Happy Third Birthday to Us! We can hardly believe it; it seems only a few months ago when we set off on this journey. But it was Easter 2012 when Mary and I, together with a few friends and family members, first set off delivering issue one around Sileby and Mountsorrel. Anne Harrison Mixed Media Artist, Leicestershire My passion for walking in the English countryside throughout its glorious seasons, together with my love of creative gardening, inspires me to explore the depth and texture which ‘Thread Painting’ can add to the palette of the fine artist. Painting directly onto canvas I begin to build up the image with the embroidery, highlighting texture onto the details of the landscape, including trees, hedgerows and flowers.

“A very welcoming, family friendly place, full of beautiful things. Great for a pot of tea while the children play in the garden.”

Back then we printed 7,000 copies each month and the 14,000 over two months were delivered to the four largest villages each side of the River Soar, south of Loughborough. Bit by bit we have grown and now distribute 15,000 every month, which is 30,000 different addresses over two months, from the very north of the River Soar where it meets the River Trent to Cropston in the South where it borders Thurcaston and the City of Leicester. We also make available a few hundred copies each month in carefully chosen loca ons so that those who don’t get one delivered have the opportunity to turn these pages. A quick calcula on tells us we have produced and delivered 364,000 copies in the last three years. But we never forget what we’re all about ‐ delivering the messages, words and pictures that help our community thrive. In our pages since we started we’ve designed and/or delivered more than 2,000 individual adverts which must have converted to hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of business for our adver sers over the years, lending a helping hand towards the livelihoods of our neighbours. Here’s to the next three years then... Cheers!

The Daffodil (Narcissus) For me these cheery blooms really do break the spell of winter. Long celebrated in art and culture, the daffodil is at its best planted in huge dri s. Most of us don't have space for that, but every garden should make room for a small group to li the spirit. There are thousands of cul vars to choose from. For a small

garden it’s hard to beat the charm of the miniature form ‘Tête‐à‐Tête” which are easy to grow and very long living. Or for something a li le different in a larger plot try ‘Thalia’ an old pure white variety that smells deligh ul. Whichever variety you grow don’t be tempted to cut back or dy the foliage a er flowering as this will interfere with the bulbs ability to store energy for the following year’s flowers. Claire Jones

Tree Fellers

A head for heights, and a love of the outdoors would probably be among the top a ributes required for this line of work... I caught up with the JSB team on a job in Glenfield, where they were cu ng a dozen or more overgrown leylandii trees down to size. Josh was hidden twenty feet up in the thick of the foliage, detectable only by the whirring of a chain saw and violent rustling as a branch plummeted downwards into the emp ed car park; he gradually appeared as more branches fell. James was in charge of the shredder which was rapidly gobbling up the severed bits of tree and pulverising them into ny fragments ready for conversion into Biomass fuel‐ which is green fuel for

the 21st century. Larger logs are put aside for seasoning and reuse where possible or for log burning stoves if not. Graham was finishing off at the rear of the premises as this was to be their last day on this job. I asked James what sort of training they’d undertaken for this line of specialised work. “Between the three of us we have more than thirty years experience as professional climbers for contractors working for u lity companies; moving over to the private sector was a natural progression.” Tree Fellers Josh, Graham & Onwards and James of JSB Tree Surgery upwards!

Nicky Morgan Conserva ve Parliamentary Candidate

I write just as Parliament is about to be dissolved which means that for about 6 weeks there will be no Members of Parliament although Government Ministers remain in post. I have loved being Loughborough’s MP since May 2010 and it has been an enormous privilege to meet so many people, hear about their lives and help them with their problems. I would relish the chance to do all this again for you in the next Parliament. The next Conserva ve Government will do the following key things to secure a be er future for Britain: • Ensure Britain lives within its means – pay down our debts and keep our economy secure • Build a Britain with full employment – encourage enterprise, back small business, keep job taxes low and cut red tape • Build a Britain that rewards work – cut income tax and raise the 40p tax threshold, deliver tax free childcare and a tax cut for married couples • Build a Britain that gives every child the best start in life – ensuring every child has a good local school ge ng the basics of literacy and numeracy right from early on, develop a Na onal Teachers Service, create three million new appren ceships, ensure there is no cap on university places, guarantee a place on Na onal Ci zen Service for every teenager who wants it • Build a Britain that offers security in re rement – con nue to increase the basic state pension through the triple lock, introduce a new single‐ er pension, let people invest and spend their pension as they like and pass it on to loved ones tax‐free, protect pensioner benefits like free bus passes, TV licences and winter fuel payment, ensure a strong economy so no one is forced to sell their home to pay for care • Build a Britain where everyone who works hard can have a home of their own – help to keep mortgage rates low, build more homes that people can afford, including 200,000 new Starter Homes for first‐ me buyers under the age of 40, extend the Help to Buy equity loan scheme, back Right to Buy and provide more security for those who rent and ensure local people have more control over planning

Ma hew O’Callaghan Labour Parliamentary Candidate

I’m about as local as you can get. I went to school in Ashby, worked for Fisons in Loughborough and have lived in Wymeswold in the Loughborough Cons tuency. That’s why for the last three and a half years I have been knocking on doors in Barrow, Quorn, Sileby and other villages to find out the real issues that affect local people. I will have spoken to around 10,000 by the me of the General Elec on. What does impress me is how much ac vity goes on in our villages – the whole range of community groups and socie es that rely on volunteers – the unsung heroes of village life. Unfortunately neither the Government nor the Council recognise how important these volunteers are and much of their funding has been cut. This, along with the County’s proposals to offload 36 village libraries will have a devasta ng effect on villages across the Cons tuency. No two villages are the same; the problems in one are different in another. There are a few themes that emerge, for example ‐ the amount of new building being forced into villages, o en onto Greenfield sites without any regard to adequate road infrastructure or their impact on the local GP surgery, school class sizes, etc. Labour will ensure that the voice of the local community is properly heard in future; planning applica ons and villages will be able to make their own plans as to how their community should develop. Yes, we do need more houses but the right type of houses in the right places; for example small units for young local families, or elderly people downsizing, who want to remain in the village. Talking of young families, we will provide addi onal childcare for preschool children (25 hours) and from 8am to 6pm for older children at the local primary school. We will improve access to GP surgeries so that you get to see a GP within 48 hours. The NHS will remain a funding priority for an incoming Labour Government. What we also need to work on is improved access to bus services so people can get to a surgery easily. To contact me call 07894 229499, email ma hewocall@gmail.com or write to 21 Fennel Street, Loughborough. LE11 1UQ www.ma hewocallaghan.co.uk

further joint mee ng will be arranged for the par es to seek to resolve their dispute. Unfortunately, not everything can be resolved out of court and an applica on to the Family Court will be necessary. Terminology used within the Family Court has changed; Residence orders (formerly custody) and Contact Orders (formerly access) have been replaced with Child Arrangement Orders. A Child Arrangement Order means an order regula ng the arrangements rela ng to any of the following: a) With whom a child is to live, spend me or otherwise have contact, and b) When a child is to live, spend me or otherwise have contact with any person.

Within a Child Arrangement Order, the care of the child can be shared between the parents or the child can live with one parent and have contact with the other. The paramount considera on in every case is the child or children's welfare. The wishes and feelings of the child or children are always considered and are par cularly taken into account for older children. The AGA Saga

The AGA cooker was introduced in 1922 for big houses with busy kitchens... The great and the good were, and s ll are, proud owners of the world’s most famous cooker. But did you know it’s inventor won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1912 for his work in developing an automated gas ligh ng system for marine lighthouses? Swedish born Nils Gustav Dalen was permanently blinded in one of his experiments; this led him to develop a cooking system with no visible naked flame which could run con nuously using only 8 pounds of coal per day. Today, AGA cookers can run on solid fuel, gas, electric, oil or a combina on of fuels..

The name is formed from the ini als of Ak ebolaget Gas Accumulator ‐ the company Dalen owned. Carl Hodgkins of CJ Hodgkins Ltd has grown up with AGA technology. His father was manager at C. A. Newton of Derby who were an AGA retailer before they were taken over by AGA. Carl worked under his father and then for AGA as a senior technician un l 2004 when he le to start up his own company. Today he services AGAs in some of the biggest houses in the region, besides all those on the Chatsworth Estate in Derbyshire.

Too proud to admit you need help?

FREE,

As a qualified nurse of 25 years, and having run Absolute Care for three years now, I’ve no ced that people find it really difficult to accept help...

no obligation homecare needs assessment in your own home

It could be age‐related, or are they afraid of losing their independence thinking it’s the first step towards residen al care? Maybe they think they can’t afford help, or that it won’t be very good ‐ let’s face it, there’s a lot of bad press out there. Or could it be that people are just too proud to admit they need help? Therefore one of the most important aspects of my role is helping people overcome their anxie es and the good news is that once they try it they soon realise that just a li le help can make all the difference. It can help them stay independent, provide a focal point for their day and even help them regain lost skills. It can introduce new friends and provide opportuni es to re‐integrate with the community. And family members also feel reassured that their loved ones are receiving support.

Budget 2015 So, how will the announcements in George Osborne’s Budget affect you? The personal allowance for 2015/16 is £10,600 but this will increase to £10,800 for 2016/17 and again to £11,000 for 2017/18. The higher rate 40% tax threshold will also increase to £43,300 in 2017/18. There will be a new Personal Savings Allowance from 2016/17 which means the first £1,000 of interest received on savings will be tax‐free (reduced to £500 if you are a higher rate taxpayer). It was also announced that by 2020 the annual income tax return will be abolished. George Osborne said this is “a revolu onary simplifica on of tax collec on”. Informa on will be uploaded to a new digital tax account and will allow taxpayers to pay their tax in real me instead of wai ng un l 31 January following the end of the tax year. Businesses will be able to link their bank accounts and accoun ng so ware to the digital tax account. An Eye for Detail O en the difference between professional people and the rest is a keen eye for the smaller detail...

KEITH URRY & SON High Class Painting & Decorating Since 1995

Visi ng Keith Urry at his house in Kingston on Soar, I wasn’t at all surprised to find a neat and tastefully decorated home. We sat at the kitchen table and cha ed over a cup of coffee. Keith’s son Joe, having recently completed his appren ceship, has now joined the growing family business. I made notes as the family cat, now on the table too, nudged my pen with its head. As I admired a stunning framed print on the wall, Keith said, “I took that last year on holiday in India. I was up early and had wandered along the river side. The light was perfect and a heat haze de‐focussing the mid‐ distance allowed me to no ce the foreground more keenly.” I have a no on that to capture a photograph as good as that requires similar talents to a high class painter and decorator. Smile while you s ll have teeth!

On a recent holiday I spo ed an amusing sign which read, “Life is too short - smile while you s ll have teeth!” It reminded me how short life is and how smiling alters your physiology making you feel good. Smiling is infec ous, if you smile others will respond by smiling back and this will have a very posi ve impact on your overall health.

Teeth too can have a massive impact on health. There are studies that suggest oral health and gum disease can be related to serious condi ons like heart disease. One study found that the presence of common problems in the mouth including gum disease (gingivi s), cavi es and missing teeth are a very good predictor of heart disease. So it is important that you make looking a er your teeth a priority. It is very easy and not expensive to brush and floss your teeth regularly and that might be all that you need to do. Keep an eye on symptoms such as bleeding gums, sensi ve and loose teeth and visit your den st regularly for checkups. So keep smiling and long may you have teeth! Paula Reed FINALIST

Epidermoid Cysts and Milia Epidermoid cysts are smooth, round lumps filled with kera n - a fibrous protein - forming under the top layer of skin. Occurring anywhere on the body and varying in size, those removed using Advanced Electrolysis are most typically pea-sized or smaller. Milia are ny cysts most commonly found around the eyes and nose but can occur near the genitals. In infants they are o en called ‘milk spots’ and normally spontaneously resolve, but in adults they are unlikely to disappear and can be unsightly. Especially no ceable on dark skin, milia can be confused with whiteheads, promp ng a empts to squeeze them leading to soreness and scarring.

Appearance is generally improved immediately following removal as the area is fla ened in minutes. Within a day a dark scab forms and, once healed, there is o en no visual evidence of the blemish remaining.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Spring being just around the corner reminded me of the me last year me and Sarah decided to visit a wedding show to give us some inspira on for our impending Big Day. Who knew that love and happiness was such a serious business? A er filling out our registra on form with the usual false name and address, we were allowed inside a vast exhibi on hall full of stands dedicated to all things fluffy and amazing. The first stall was selling imita on red Post Boxes. Here was my first conundrum. “Sarah, what are they for?” “Our guests post their cards inside them so they don’t get lost.” “Well that’s no good for us is it?” “Why?” “We get married at five o’clock and last post on a Saturday is 12.45.” “Tom, if you are going to mess about all day we might as well go home now.” Chastened, we proceeded down the next aisle. Walking past photographers and old men in peaked caps waving pictures of Rolls Royces, I stumbled upon the strangest stall I had ever seen. A woman was si ng behind a counter which contained nothing more than a few photographs. Then I saw it.

Behind her, sat on its perch was a real live tawny owl.

boat and a pussy cat hidden under there have you?”

Yellow and black saucer eyes, a beak designed for eviscera ng rodents and claws that could probably strip your flesh down to the bone. I whispered to Sarah ‐

Another sharp dig from Sarah. Through a fixed smiled she explained to me that the owl’s job was to deliver the rings at the ceremony – fly across the venue to the handler who would present them to the best man.

“Do you think she’s got her events mixed up? Do you think she knows this is a wedding show?” “Of course she knows it’s a wedding show.” “Then what is she doing here with that owl?” “Well what do you think she’s doing?” Why someone would need an owl to get married I couldn’t begin to fathom. I decided to make some enquiries myself. The lady smiled as I leaned forward and asked, “You haven’t by any chance got a pea green

“Yes but then who signs for them? Surely the owl can’t – “ I was then dragged away to a tax‐ dodging generic coffee emporium, where Sarah had to have a li le word. So, a er a good talking to, we con nued with our inves ga ons. But there seemed nothing here that was of any prac cal use for the Groom About Town. It was then I chanced upon the kind of stall I had been wai ng for all day ‐ the eyebrow stall! I elbowed my way to the front of

the queue, mu ering something about sor ng out the caterpillars above my eyes. “Tom, please don’t.” But it was too late. I presented my eyebrows to the nice lady. She glanced from one fuzzy outcrop to the other, emi ng a worrying tu ut with each inspec on. “Well sir, it’s gonna take a lot of hard work, but together, we’ll get there.” She then rolled out a set of miniature tools that were either for repairing the disaster above my eyes, or she had stolen a Lillipu an’s car repair kit. She then produced a ny comb and proceeded to comb my eyebrows (I’m not making this up by the way).

Then suddenly, some powder appeared. Wary of edging into guy‐liner territory, I was about to object when she reassured me, “Don’t worry about the powder sir, it’s waterproof.” This confused me further. “Madam, I an cipate my wedding day being emo onal. However, I don’t think I’ll be reci ng my vows whilst standing on my head. In any case, I thought you might be trimming them, I believe the correct term is shaping? She stopped in mid‐powder. “I’m sorry sir, we don’t do that here. That’s a different stall.”

slightly more alarmed expression than usual, declared that maybe arranging our wedding was something best le to the experts, which as it transpired, didn’t include me. “Look Tom,” she sighed, “On the day, just turn up and leave the rest to your bride, OK?” I think life goes smoother if we all just play to our strengths, don’t you?

I turned to Sarah who, no ng that I appeared to be wearing a

A Good Deed Indeed

Under the current means tes ng arrangements, anyone with assets of more than £23,250 must pay the full cost if they need social or residen al care. This leaves 1 in 10 people over 65 facing costs of more than £100,000 during their life me.

For most of us it is a contradic on ‐ on the one hand we want to pay our way in later life and not be a burden to family or state, but on the other hand we don’t want all that we have strived for ‐ our house, savings and assets ‐ taken away to pay astronomical care home fees. And it is all too o en something many people don’t like to think about ‐ like making a will ‐ both could seem a bit like temp ng fate.

There are changes planned to be introduced next year to cap the amount any individual will have to pay for their care costs, but that’s a er the elec on and who knows what new austerity measures the next lot will dream up?

But it is impera ve that we plan ahead if we want to make the best of what we have and ensure that most of it goes where we want it to. If you don’t make plans and you get to a point where you need care beyond that which your family can

Silver Linings A li le over three years ago Sco Kempin, MD of Ecoclean Carpet and Floor care, found himself redundant a er the company he worked for was taken over... He had been a high flyer in the recruitment industry and, although only in his early for es, he found that it was now a younger man’s game and decided to try his hand at something new. With his redundancy payment and a li le of his savings he invested in a revolu onary system that offered an efficient, economical and environmentally friendly alterna ve to tradi onal wet carpet and floor cleaning. I visited Sco at his home in Loughborough and showing me through to his new garden office he said, “Since star ng Ecoclean, I’ve never looked back ‐ in fact I wish I’d done it years ago; being

made redundant really was a cloud with a silver lining. Ecoclean is already a three genera on business; my father‐in‐law and my son now work for the company. We have some major retail contracts in different parts of the country, one in London’s fashionable Oxford Street at a high class jewellers. That one involves carpets and stone floor, so it’s quite a specialist task.”

I asked what made the Ecoclean system different from conven onal forms of carpet and floor cleaning. “The ac ve ingredient is a dry substance that acts a bit like a sponge in that dust and dirt are absorbed instantly. First we apply the ingredient and then work it into the carpet using a special applicator. North, East, South, and West, if you like. Then we use what amounts to a very powerful

Start from the car park on Burton Road, Repton. (On the B5008 south of the junc on of the A50 and the A38). The source of the River Dove is close to Buxton, on Axe Edge Moor. It flows generally south through the picturesque southern Peak District, including iconic Dovedale, the des na on of about a million people each year. For most of its journey to join the River Trent at Newton Solney, it forms the border between Staffordshire and Derbyshire. 1 Turn le out of the car park entrance to Mitre Drive and turn le past a footpath signpost to the wide metal gate set back on the right. Turn right, past this gate, up the wide track between hedges with the sports field to the right. Turn right, through a kissing gate, along the path and then le between houses. Cross the road and take the path ahead. 2 Keep direc on over the field ahead which may be under cul va on although a path should be well marked within any crop. Con nue up the right hand field edge, over the s le and passing le of the Dutch barn to the next s le at the corner of a tarmac farm drive. Keep ahead between fences and straight on when the drive bears le through gates. 3 Go down the slight slope, over the s le and cross the field ahead, a track should be well marked, to the s le behind the le hand end of the trees. Step over and carry on up the wide track on the field edge, with the hedge to the right, all the way to the road. 4 Turn right, along this road, which is o en busier than it first appears, to the main road in Newton Solney village. Turn le , down to the signpost for the church and take this narrow road to the right, to the church gates and go through the metal kissing gate on the right. Con nue through the churchyard and ahead along the path between the fence and the hedge. Descend the steps at the end and turn le down the tree lined cu ng to the River Trent. 5 Bear right, with the river, past the confluence with the River Dove and bear le away from the farm road over the s le next to the river. Carry on through the right hand metal gateway and bear le over the s le next to the metal gate. Bear right to the corner of a fence which is marked by a footpath disc, con nue with the fence to the right and go over the s le on the right, close to the far end. Turn le back to the original direc on with the low tree to the right, past a marker post and through the fence gap/dyke crossing. Go up to the river.

The Planets April: Venus is speeding upwards through Taurus, passing the Pleiades (Seven Sisters) on 11th April. The Evening Star grows steadily brighter to reach mag ‐ 4.0 by the end of April, when it’s se ng a er midnight. Jupiter is pu ng on a rival show in the south although fainter at mag ‐ 2.1. Mars slips away at dusk and is gone by April’s end. Mercury is at mag ‐ 1.1 by 22nd of the month and is easy to spot next to Pleiades by the 30th. Saturn rises at 11.30 pm and is the brightest object (pale yellow) in the constella on of Scorpius.

Solar Eclipse at Stargazing Live Event 20th March 2015 Mary and I arrived at Leicester Racecourse at about a quarter to nine on Friday morning 20th March 2015. We were surprised to find so many people queuing to get in as well as bus loads of excited school children milling about. I have to admit, the BBC know how to put on a good show, even though the show itself promised to be pre y spectacular. We made our way through the hoards of school kids, camera men, interviewers and technicians to the grandstand area which gave the very best view of the impending event ‐ for two reasons ‐ the sun was straight ahead of us and there was a giant TV screen transmi ng live from Jodrell Bank, The Faroe Isles and also from a plane flying high above the clouds at the point where maximum eclipse would occur. Everyone was given free eclipse glasses to look at the eclipsing Sun in safety. As our maximum eclipse approached ‐ we were to witness an 89% black‐out ‐ the sky changed to an eerie twilight and the temperature dropped. We didn’t detect the sounds of nature quietening, due to all the cha ering children, but nonetheless it was a truly awesome experience, one we’ll never forget. And we now have our special eclipse glasses for the next one on 12 August 2026. This is what we saw at the maximum eclipse at 09.34

May: Venus moves ever closer to Jupiter during May; they have a cosmic encounter and are almost together on June 30th. Venus hangs like a lantern in the western sky a er sunset, se ng at half past midnight. Jupiter is the second brightest object a er the moon and is about an hour and a half behind on the eclip c, se ng at 2 am. On May 1st look on the north western horizon at about 10 pm and you may spot Mercury just to the le of the Pleiades. Saturn is low in the sky and is outshone by its siblings and the twilight this month but is visible through a telescope in Scorpius.

June: Venus enters twilight this month and loses some of its awe. But if you view it through a small telescope you will see it changing shape from half lit like a first or last quarter moon to a fat gibbous crescent ‐ because Venus is between us and the Sun it goes through phases a bit like the moon does. Meanwhile Jupiter lies to the le of Venus and trundles slowly from Cancer to Leo and eventually catches up with Venus on June 30th. They will be about 2/3rds of a moon’s breadth away from each other. Saturn keeps a respectable distance away and sets around 3.30 am.
