Happy New Third Year
How time flies. I read a brilliantly evocative piece a couple of weeks ago on how we perceive time. I’ve often thought that our perception of individual minutes, months and years is based upon how long we’ve been alive. As infants time is forever it seems, but as we get older we have referenced segments to relate to and our whole life experience is divided by more minutes, months and years. So each division represents a smaller portion of the whole and we feel that time is running faster and faster, ever diminishing. The article also suggested some deeper theories including chemical changes in our brain, something called Forward Telescoping, and that we experience less new stuff - a “done that, got the T-shirt” kind of thing. If you’d like to read it here’s the link: www.themindunleashed.org/2014/10/year-seems-disappear-quickly-last.html But my point here is that the passing of time for Mary and I is now marked in months, deadlines and editions and realising our photo on here was a few years old, we thought we had better have a new one. We asked our resident photographer, Bill Allsopp, if he could oblige. Not only did he oblige, but we had a lovely lunch cooked by his wife Georgina and a very pleasant afternoon into the bargain. The result is on the left. And here we are, almost at our third birthday, bigger and stronger than ever. Looking back to our New Year edition of 2014, I realised that our astronomy feature Everything Under the Sun is a year old, but ironically, we have to admit that our History feature didn’t last. Hey ho! Onward we go! Happy New Year to all the 30,000 homes out there who receive Soar Valley Life, and of course to you, our most special reader...

New Treatment for Photosensi ve Migraine Migraine has many triggers including stress, certain foods and hormones... Research has found that 40% of migraine a acks may be visually induced by flickering light or ‘blue‐light’ from LED’s, including screens, tablets and smart phones ‐ made worse when viewing high contrast pa erns whilst reading. Findings in the US, by neuroscien sts using brain imaging, showed that precision‐ nted lenses worn in front of the eyes reduced visual migraine by suppressing ‘excitable’ areas of the visual cortex in the brain. Lenses were prescribed using an Ini a ve Colorimeter that allows over 120,000 specific colour op ons. The same instrument is used in the treatment of Visual Stress which o en results in movement of words when reading. Visual Stress is linked to ‘Dyslexia’ – a term o en used to refer to reading problems that are not due to teaching. For more informa on or to make an appointment if you suffer from Photosensi ve Migraine or Visual Stress call Visual Answers Optometrists on 01509 414151.

Snowdrops No one could fail to love the charm of this late winter beauty and it has long been treasured and cul vated as a result… The La n name for the common Snowdrop is Galanthus nivalis, Galanthus means ‘with milk white flowers’ and nivalis means ‘snowy’. They enjoy a moist soil where in me they will mul ply into dri s.
Unlike other bulbs that are planted dry, Snowdrops are best planted ‘in the green’ just a er flowering, these are readily available by mail order or alterna vely you can divide exis ng colonies when the foliage is just dying back in the spring. Tradi onally Snowdrops are seen to herald the end of winter ‐ that may be a bit ambi ous but they are certainly an assurance that the brighter days of spring are not far off! Claire Jones

I would like to wish you and your family and loved ones all the very best for a happy, healthy and successful 2015 It was a huge pleasure to drop in to Loughborough Rugby Club one Sunday recently as well as joining the Pa ent Par cipa on Group at Rosebery Medical Centre for one of their mee ngs. I also opened the Local Policing Conference held at Holywell Park and joined the Mayor and Mayoress and Polish Ambassador for the opening of the Polish Heritage exhibi on at John Storer House. I enjoyed a wonderful performance of Yeoman of the Guard by the Christchurch Gilbert & Sullivan Society at Hind Leys, Shepshed and a fabulous concert at All Saints in Loughborough organised to mark the re‐posi oning of the War Memorials at the Church. I have also had the pleasure of visi ng various primary schools including Cobden, Outwoods Edge and St Winefride’s and Ashmount Special School too. I know that planning applica ons con nue to be a major concern locally, par cularly the Charnwood plans commi ee mee ng in which many applica ons were to be considered at the same me. I did contact the Secretary of State for Communi es and Local Government before the mee ng to ask him to “call‐in” the Shepshed and Barrow upon Soar applica ons. If he agreed this would mean that if they were approved by the commi ee he could then decide on them rather than the commi ee. One applica on will be determined by the Secretary of State anyway because it has not been determined by the council in the me allowed, three were refused by the commi ee and, at the me of wri ng, I am wai ng to hear his decision on the other three. As a en on now turns to 2015 and New Year’s Resolu ons I con nue to work on a community mental health café hub in Loughborough with a great team of volunteers and look forward to welcoming a new vicar at the town’s Parish Church, All Saints, in the Spring. If you live in the Loughborough cons tuency and need assistance please e‐mail me nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk or call 01509 262723 or you can write to me at or visit my office at 3/3a No ngham Road, Loughborough LE11 1ER.

Stamp Duty Reform According to George Osborne, Stamp Duty Land Tax, or SDLT, has now been cut for 98% of people who pay it... Since 4 December, those buying a home for less than £937,500 will pay less stamp duty, or the same. For a number of years it has been shown that those with proper es worth over £250,000 (for example) have been penalised by the Stamp Duty system where stamp duty increased from just 1% to 3%. The new rules are much fairer and this should encourage many homeowners in the £250,000 ‐ £285,000 bracket to put their proper es on the market for
their true value thus helping to bolster the housing market. Under the old rules, a purchase at £185,000 would have resulted in duty of £1,850 (1%). Now for the same property, nothing is payable on the first £125,000 and 2% is payable on the remaining £60,000 i.e. £1200 resul ng in a saving of £650. An average family home purchased for £275,000 under the old rules would have resulted in SDLT of £7,250. The effec ve tax rate under the new rules means SDLT due of £3,750 resul ng in a saving of £4,500.
Now, a er a reform of the system, rates are payable on that part of the purchase price falling within each band: 0% on the first £125,000, then 2% on the por on up to £250,000, then 5% up to £925,000, then 10% up to £1.5m, and 12% on anything above that. We would like to advise our customers that Moss Solicitors’ quotes were updated immediately following the change to take effect of the new rates. Bring a pan of water to the boil. Add the carrots and boil for 5 minutes un l almost tender adding the cauliflower and broccoli florets for the last 2 minutes. Drain well and set aside. Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over a medium heat. Add the paneer and mushrooms and s r‐fry over a high heat for 3‐4 minutes un l golden brown. Remove with a slo ed spoon and set aside. Add the onion to the pan and fry very gently for about 10 minutes un l so and golden. Add the garlic, ginger and chilli and fry for a further 2‐3 minutes then s r in the Thai paste and cook for 1‐2 minutes un l fragrant. Pour in the coconut milk and bring to the boil then reduce the heat and return the paneer and mushrooms to the pan along with the drained vegetables, peas and tomatoes. S r well and simmer gently for 4‐5 minutes. Add the lime juice and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve garnished with sliced red chilli pepper and oregano leaves. Paneer is an Indian vegetarian cheese which has a firm texture and goes par cularly well with spices and garlic, chilli and ginger. You can use drained and cubed tofu instead, if preferred.

Preheat the oven to 220°C, 200°C fan, Gas 7. Place the bu er and 150ml water into pan and heat gently un l the bu er melts. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil then quickly p in the flour and a large pinch of salt and beat with a wooden spoon un l the mixture forms a smooth ball that comes away from the sides of the pan. Cool for 2‐3 minutes.
2
Gradually add the beaten eggs, bea ng well a er each addi on, un l the mixture is firm and glossy. You may not need to add all the beaten egg.
3
Spoon the mixture into a large disposable piping bag fi ed with a large plain nozzle and pipe 10 x 9cm lengths of the pastry onto a large dampened baking sheet.
4
5
Bake in the preheated oven for 15‐20 minutes un l the pastry is risen, golden and crisp. Pierce each éclair with the p of a knife to allow the steam to escape and bake for a further 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Halve each cold éclair. Whip the cream and vanilla extract together in a bowl un l so ly peaking and drop spoonfuls into the bo om halves of the eclairs.
6
Si the icing sugar into a bowl and beat in the coffee to make a smooth icing. Gently dip the top half of each éclair in the icing. Carefully sandwich the éclairs back together.
Tip
To dampen the baking sheet just sprinkle about 1/2 tsp of cold water over it – this will create extra steam in the hot oven which will help the choux pastry to rise.

Keeping ac ve in the winter As the long dark nights con nue, ge ng out for a run or heading out to the gym may lose its appeal, especially when the frost sets in. Try going to the gym on the way home rather than going home first and wan ng to snuggle in ‐ or why not try workouts available online in the comfort of your living room? Si ng on the sofa will not keep you fit and healthy during the cold half of the year and being less ac ve may also cause a lowering of your mood. Ge ng out for a weekend walk in the country, or taking a brisk walk at lunch me, especially on a bright sunny day, will li your mood and help you hit the 10,000 steps a day recommended to keep you fit. The Planets January: Venus has a starring role throughout the first half of this year and skims past five other planets. This month you’ll catch Venus gradually rising from the twilight in the South East and shining brilliantly at magnitude - 3.8 Venus encounters Mercury only a degree to her lower right for only a few days mid month. Mars is at the upper left setting at 7.45 pm. Jupiter is king of the later evening sky rising at 6.30 pm, our giant planet blazing at magnitude - 2.4. Saturn follows much later rising a 4am at magnitude + 0.7.

Meteor Showers
Debris from long ago...
Major Meteor Showers in 2015
QUADRANTIDS 3 - 4 JAN These appear to radiate from the constellation of Draco and peak at between 60 and 100 meteors per hour. Full moon on the 5th will drown out all but the brightest LYRIDS 22 - 23 APR Radiating from the constellation of Lyra, peaking on St George’s day but only at about 20 to 30 per hour. ETA AQUARIDS 5 - 6 - 7 MAY This debris is left over from Halley’s comet and falls to earth at the rate of between 20 and 60 particles per hour. Alas the full moon again hampers good viewing. PERSEIDS 12 - 13 AUGUST Perseus fires these to earth at a rate of 60 to 80 per hour and some years gives rise to spectacular displays. Comet Swift-Tuttle left these behind. ORIONIDS 22 OCTOBER Halley’s 2nd disposal of the year as we pass through the other side of the comet’s orbit. This time it’s a shallower trajectory and gives rise to only 10 to 20 per hour. LEONIDS 18 NOVEMBER Here’s another Tuttle found comet appearing from the constellation of Leo at 10 to 20 per hour GEMINIDS 14 DECEMBER Saving the best until last these meteors from Gemini average about 100 an hour. This debris once belonged to an asteroid that circles the Sun every 3.3 years. Its name is 3200 Phaethon and was discovered by astronomers in 1983. Think about this for a moment: we pass exactly where a billion tons or more of rock and ice speed by every three years and four months!
February: Jupiter is resplendent all night long between Cancer and Leo at mag -2.3 dominating the night sky as it comes its closest to Earth this year on February 6th. But even more brilliant is Venus at mag - 3.8 and is steaming upwards in the evening twilight, setting some 3 hours after the Sun. Mars has a tryst with Venus on 21st & 22nd of this month; they have a brief encounter as our two closest neighbours pass within 1 degree of each other. Mars at mag + 1.2 is a hundred times fainter than Venus. March: Still ruling the evening sky Venus is blazing at - 3.9 slipping away at 8.30pm at the beginning of March but staying up until 11pm by the
month’s end. Mars at - 1.3 lies just below Venus in Pisces and sets just after 8pm. Jupiter is visible all night long and outshines all the stars at magnitude - 2.3. The solar system’s largest planet can be found in the constellation of Cancer. With binoculars held steady (on a tripod) you can observe Jupiter's 4 largest moons - Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto first seen by Gallileo in 1610. You’ll have to wait up until after 1am to get a glimpse of Saturn, which rises in the South-East at magnitude + 0.5 in Scorpius. Mercury is now lost in the Sun’s glare but re-appears in April at a splendid - 1.1

Changing Clothes At last, a range of quality clothing for older ladies and gentlemen to choose from in the comfort of their own home... Mum can’t get out so easily these days, but she con nues to strive to be independent. When I put my self in her shoes and imagine what it’s like to be more and more reliant on others for many of the day to day things we take Page 32
for granted, I realise how frustra ng life must be for her. Clothes shopping for instance; a chore for some, a joy for others, but a necessity none the less. Then I consider the choices we have out there on the high street: specialist shops abound and there are department stores a‐plenty with escalators to whisk you up with consummate ease. But o en you have to climb back down the stairs a er they’ve taken your money. This is not a problem un l you come to need a bit of help
with stairs not to men on a lot of stamina between stores. But, in this Hi‐Tech internet age, I hear you ask, why bother going into town, finding your way around from shop to shop and back home again, risking our untrustworthy weather? Just get on Amazon or eBay and all you could ever need is there at the click of a mouse. All well and good unless it doesn’t fit or the colour isn’t the same as it appeared on screen and you can’t get out

to the post office to return the item. All assuming you have access to the internet and know what to do in the first place! Yep, you guessed it, Mum doesn’t do internet, and her knowledge of Hi‐Tech stopped with the LED calculator 30 years ago! Enter We Care Clothing! A er a life me career as a nurse specialising in elderly care, Sharon Murphy had observed over many years how our elders are o en poorly catered for. She has
now thoroughly researched the market and brought together an extensive range of high quality clothes for the older person. You can even arrange for a visit in your own home, perhaps with a friend over coffee to try them for yourself. Independence regained! The Be er Life Winter Flue Jab by Derek Thompson “We should have done this last year,” Anne stared reproachfully at the anaerobic fireplace puffing in the li le back room. The cat glanced in my direc on and then walked off in disgust. She was right of course - Anne, I mean. In my defence, we hadn’t needed to light the fire during the summer and I hadn’t decided then that it was high me I had a special place to do my wri ng. It seems that chimney sweeps are a curious blend of the ancient and the modern. Our regular ‘tradi onal’ sweep arrived in a top‐of‐the‐range Land Rover Defender (i.e. a proper Land Rover) with a set of poles, a vacuum cleaner, a laptop and a ny camera. The sheets went down and it didn’t take him long to diagnose the problem. “You’ve got a bad case of Jackdaw‐i s,” he said as we gathered around his laptop. The camera was swi ly replaced with a brush and we retreated to the kitchen to put the ke le on. Our sweep made an array of interes ng noises and did ba le, calling us back in a li le later ‐ as witnesses ‐ once the jackdaw nest had yielded. It was a complete mess and my comment about there being some good kindling in there failed to win Anne over. However, we weren’t out of the woods yet, so to speak; we were about to get an educa on. Yes, we knew that we needed a cowl fi ed; and no, of course we didn’t burn much unseasoned wood. Pine is the worst culprit ‐ it clogs up the
Page 34
chimney and is liable to spit. Burning dri wood indoors is another no‐no, due to salt corrosion on cast iron, and wooden pallets may be treated with chemicals. Lesson over, we brought out tea and Anne’s ginger shortbreads to accompany tales of terrible chimneys in the area ‐ a list we’d now joined. We listened, enviously, as Trevor (not his real name) told us about his chickens ‐ Molly, Polly and Dolly (named by his children). He regaled us with the story of the fox that came near the chicken run at 11pm every night un l they le it an alarm clock, a plan that backfired when it went off because it freaked out the hens. Trevor also has a mini‐orchard of five trees. I knew enough to drop into the conversa on, “M9 root stock,” which seemed to impress him.
stories were genuinely quite odd, although the cat seemed to really take to him and she’s an excellent judge of character. We added a date on our gardening calendar for the new cowl to be fi ed, weather permi ng, and sent him on his way. I look forward to his next visit; I want to hear about his 20‐year‐old tortoise. Once Trevor le I was true to my work and went outside to si the debris for kindling. I also started wondering whether a log burning stove would be be er for the back room, on the grounds of efficiency and aesthe cs. A er all, there’s always a faint chance that one of my books will eventually need a backcover photograph of the author at work.
He revealed his skill at dowsing, having located a water source in a field for a local farmer, using just a forked hazel s ck and a pendulum (for a second opinion). Some of his

Self Assessment Do you need to complete a Self Assessment Income Tax Return for 2013/2014? We are losing count of the number of people we meet who are failing to properly account for all their earnings, but if you act before 31 January 2015 you are in me to stop penal es arising from undisclosed income... There is a very fine line between selling goods on sites such as eBay or at car boot sales and actually trading. HMRC do in fact look at various websites and then request details of the seller to ensure they are declaring any profits they may make. To sell the odd ornament from your home is fine but buying and reselling becomes a business. A er expenses have been taken into account the liability for tax is very o en nil but it must be declared.
Then there are people who think they’re not making a profit on buy to let proper es because the income covers the mortgage repayments. It must be remembered that only the interest on any loan is allowable against profits. HMRC has access to HM Land Registry records and we are led to believe they are trawling through them. How many people do you know who do “cash in hand” jobs? Remember the penal es and interest charged when they are traced will o en outweigh any gain made and it could be said that the person who pays is as much at fault as the receiver. Not many people realise that failure to disclose your total income, for whatever reason, could be considered as fraud by your local friendly County Court!

HMRC are normally prepared to assist you and se le for the tax due, plus interest and a reasonable penalty, dependant on the gravity of the case. Despite the fact you may be submi ng your return late HMRC will always deal with you preferen ally as you have decided to contact them before they find you. The Self Assessment Return may look frightening at first but believe me it is not; you can get free assistance from HMRC or if you wish you can obtain the services of an accountant. Around Britain Football 1. Arbroath - In 1885, Arbroath beat Aberdeen Bon Accord 36-0 (an average of one goal every 21/2 minutes) in a first round Scottish Cup match. Thirteen of Arbroath’s goals were scored by one player, John ‘Jocky’ Petrie. 2. Dundee - In 1997, Aberdeen’s Dean Windass received three red cards in one game – originally sent off for a foul, he was given two further red cards for verbally abusing the referee and then throwing a corner flag into the crowd. Aberdeen went on to lose to Dundee 5-0, while Windass was given a six-match ban. 3. Inverness - In 1979, a second-round tie between Inverness Thistle FC and Falkirk was postponed a record twenty-nine times due to bad weather. Originally scheduled for January 9, the match finally took place forty-four days later on February 22. 4. Hull - When half an hour of extra time failed to resolve a match between Hull and Manchester United on August 5 1970, Britain’s first ever penalty shoot-out took place at Boothferry Park, Hull City’s former home ground. The first player to score in a penalty shoot-out was United’s George Best; the first to miss was Denis Law. 5. Loughborough - The 1899-1900 Football League Season saw Leicestershire’s Loughborough Town FC win just 8 points, conceding 100 goals (including 12 to Arsenal in a single match) and losing 27 of their 34 games (including all of their away games). Loughborough understandably failed to be re-elected to the League the following season and the side was disbanded in June 1900. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones

Shouting at the Television I don’t usually do this but watching EastEnders lately I find myself getting increasingly frustrated at the plight of Patrick and Denise...
FREE,
no obligation homecare needs assessment in your own home
Patrick is partly paralysed after a stroke and Denise has been struggling to cope with looking after him. She is now so exhausted that there is talk of Patrick going into a residential home. Okay, I know EastEnders is just a soap opera but the storyline has frustrated me so much that it’s had me shouting at the TV: “Denise, why aren’t you getting any help at home? You really don’t need to be struggling alone!” It’s easy for me to shout because I know what help is out there and more importantly I know how to access that help. I own and run a company that provides excellent care for people just like Patrick. Help and support which would probably ensure Patrick could remain at home. EastEnders isn’t real, but there are lots of people who find themselves in very similar situations. If this is you, call me, Wendy Pears, or one of my team, and see if we can help: 01509 881 595

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning Early in the New Year of 1965, Winston Churchill had suffered a stroke. He never regained consciousness and died on January 24th, aged 90; and though it seems sacrilegious, it’s true that he had rarely been as much loved during his life me as he was a er his death. Hated by miners as the Liberal Home Secretary who sent troops to Tonypandy to put down a strike in 1910; blamed (wrongly) for the Gallipoli disaster in World War I and (rightly) for the even greater disaster of the return to the gold standard in 1925; a truculent Imperialist dinosaur in the 1930s; distrusted by the masses in 1945; old, sick, and in the way in 1955 – Churchill had known more brickbats than bouquets. But not on the 30th January 1965, the day of his funeral. Then he was every downed airman, every drowned seaman, every tankman burnt alive, every Tommy blown to Hell, every exhausted ARP man, landgirl, muni ons worker... and miner. He was their suffering and their victory. In the three days his body lay in state in St Stephen’s Hall, Westminster, 321,360 people filed past the catafalque. The gun‐ carriage that bore him, pulled by 108 naval ra ngs with the Earl Marshal at their head, took an hour to make the 2 1/2 miles up Whitehall and along the Strand, Fleet Street, and Ludgate Hill to St Paul’s, every
Page 44
inch of the way thronged by silent mourners who had waited hours in their tens of thousands in the freezing cold. At the cathedral steps his war me comrades A lee, Eden, MacMillan, Ismay, Slim, Alexander, Portal, and Mountba en escorted the coffin inside where the leaders of 122 na ons sang To Be A Pilgrim, The Ba le Hymn of the Republic, Fight The Good Fight and Oh God Our Help. And then the short voyage on the launch Havengore from Tower Hill to Fes val Pier, the monstrous dockside cranes each bowing in turn as it passed. And finally the private train and the family burial at Bladon, Oxfordshire, where at last his widow Clemmie and his children Randolph, Mary and Sarah had their chance at tears. This was how a na on grieved then: not in hysterical outbursts, but bound together by protocol, by formality, by seemliness; as rigidly drilled as a platoon on a parade‐ ground and thus united in deed as well as thought. For everyone who lined the route or watched on television, the grief and the memories were personal; and yet they were as one.
• How fi ng it was that Churchill should choose Bladon, the parish church of his birthplace, Blenheim Palace, as his burial‐place. “In my beginning is my end. In my end is my beginning,” wrote TS Eliot in The Four Quartets; and Eliot had died aged 76 at home in Kensington only 20 days before Churchill. Both were members of the Order of Merit; both had won Nobel Prizes for literature. Eliot, though, was cremated privately at Golders Green, and his ashes were buried at East Coker in Somerset. But he has his slab at Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey, and Churchill’s statue is in Parliament Square not 200 yards away, so you can pay your respects to both in one visit, if you’ve a mind. • Happy 50th birthdays to Vinnie Jones (5th), Joely Richardson (9th), Hugh Fearnley‐ Whi ngstall (14th), James Nesbi (15th), and Heather Small (20th). Cake and botox to you all!

Seborrhoeic Keratosis These domed or plate-like growths tend to increase with age, hence the outdated term “senile wart”. They are not warts and, rather than being viral, are the result of excessive growth of epidermal (skin) cells... Although the exact cause is not known, they tend to be more common in sunlight exposed areas. Their surface can vary from slightly rough to very hard and crusty with colour ranging from pale to very dark brown. They can be from a few millimetres to several cen metres across and some mes they can become sore or itchy. On dark skinned people, the same growths can form in clusters or chains in which case they are called Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra.
Extensive seborrhoeic keratosis
A er removal using advanced electrolysis
Many people feel they are highly disfiguring and will conceal them with clothing whenever possible. Since they are usually raised, concealing those on the face with make‐up is rarely successful. At one me they could be removed on the NHS, generally by cryotherapy (freezing), but this is now very rare as these benign growths are
considered only to be a cosme c issue, not a medical one. Advanced electrolysis is an excellent treatment for removal of these blemishes and generally leaves li le or no evidence of the defect. Once healing is complete the skin is flat and so . Pennie Blatchford

And Another Thing... The Winged Chariot by Tom Hughes
I dread January. Not because of the long winter nights or post-holiday credit card bills (although they aren’t much fun), I hate New Year because that’s when the Mondeo has its dreaded MOT. Could I squeeze another year’s motoring out of the old darling? The mechanic’s intake of breath was so sharp I thought he was going to hyperven late. MOT fail! Now, I’m sure that to Jeremy Clarkson my Mondeo Ghia X is a red old rep mobile, good only for slogging up and down the M6 driven by some dull‐eyed paperclip salesman. But whenever I nestle behind the wheel (in my half leather heated seat) I am not in a Ford, rather I am in a beau ful Winged Chariot, perfect for whisking Sarah away to distant magical places, like Southport. The mechanic shook his head as the bonnet slammed shut. Sarah put a comfor ng hand on my shoulder. It was me to face facts; the old chap had to go. And that meant only one thing ‐ a visit to the showroom to lock horns with a car salesman. Colin was an affable chap. As wide as he was tall, he possessed a big red face and the worst fi ng suit I had ever seen. He came waddling towards us with such a swagger in his gait I thought for moment he was going to announce “I’ve come for ma Boy.” He shook my hand, nodded to my car and said, “That your Deo? Great car....in its day.” “In its day? Cheeky ‐” I was about to give him a mouthful when Sarah interrupted me, “Shut up Tom. Now what about this one?” Sarah pointed to a new five door hatchback. Colin beamed.”Want to take her for a spin sir?” “Her? That’s a bit 1970s isn’t it? Why can’t I take “him” for a spin?” I said indignantly. “Very well sir, I’ll get the trade plates.” He glanced at Sarah, shook his head
Page 46
in sympathy, and handed me the keys. With Sarah sat demurely in the back we eased out of the showroom as Colin explained all about this fantas c motor. “Now Tom, this model is in the Elite trim which means that every conceivable toy is on this car. Everything you can think of as an extra, this baby’s got it.” I stared at the dashboard. “Has it got Sat Nav?” “No.” “Climate control?” “Er, no.” “Rear parking sensors?” Suddenly, Colin’s eyes lit up. “Rear parking sensors? Tom, can you just pull over a second and put her in reverse gear for me?” I stopped the car and engaged reverse as Colin jumped out and ran to the back of the motor. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw Colin waggling his hips and waving his arms about. “Tom, what is he doing?” “I’ve really no idea.” A er this strange display was over, he tro ed up to the driver’s side, stuck his sweaty face through the open window and asked hopefully ‐ “Now Tom, did you hear a beep! Beep! Beep!?” “No.” Back in the car and now staring straight ahead, Colin, through gri ed teeth said, “Drive on please.” A er a while, we found ourselves on a narrow country road where Colin, with a conspiratorial wink whispered, “Now then Tom, do you
want to see how she performs through the twisty bits?” Too embarrassed to ask what that actually meant, I smiled and began trundling along the B road, nervously creeping round an endless procession of blind bends. Exasperated, Colin began shuffling about in his seat. “Now Tom, can’t you feel it? She wants to go, come on, give her her head!” I looked in the mirror at Sarah, who shrugged her shoulders. Colin was insistent, “Put your foot down, let’s see what this baby can do!” The engine whined as I stamped on the pedal. The bonnet li ed and the car lurched forward as around the corner we went ‐ “Tally Ho!” Later, a er Colin had exchanged insurance details with a rather miserable looking farmer, Sarah leaned down to inspect the damage. “Well a nny thing like this is always going to come off worse against a tractor.” Wai ng with Colin for that tow truck to take us back to the garage was the longest hour of my life. And so, a er shelling out a small fortune on a doublewishbone something or other, my beloved Winged Chariot was back on the road. I took Sarah for a spin. I turned up the climate control to maximum. “Right Sarah darling, shall we see what this baby can do?” “Tom, just keep your eyes on the road, OK? And Tom?” “Yes my sweet?” “Keep a look out for tractors?”

Business 2 Business But this is just one aspect of effec ve marke ng, and a business must engage in various forms of selling and promo ng in order to survive and thrive.
Marke ng your business - ignore it at your peril... A er a 40 year career in business and star ng as a junior member of the fledgling Ins tute of Marke ng back in the mid 70s, when Geoffrey Kent (Chief Execu ve of Imperial Tobacco ‐ Players) was our regional chairman, I have grown up with the myths and magic that surrounds this most mys cal and yet majes c of all business func ons. The simple defini on of Marke ng is: The ac on or business of promo ng and selling products or services. The longer defini on could fill a book. One of the most common objec ons we get here at Soar Valley Life, from those that choose not to adver se with us, is this one: “I don’t need to adver se, all my work comes from referrals!” The reply I’d like to give, but I restrain myself, is: “Well, lucky you!” O en, a one man band, once he or she gets going, may not have the capacity for the extra work that effec ve adver sing may bring in and might well be able to live off those happy customers that recommend them to their friends and contacts. This is of course the jewel in the crown of all marke ng ac vity ‐ ge ng your customers to promote and sell you and your wares, effec vely and for no fee!
Another aspect of marke ng, which has performed most successfully and consistently for us once we got underway ‐ and the one that is most dear to our hearts ‐ is of course adver sing. Our magazine is our product and every month 15,000 copies do the talking for us. And every month we get enquiries of which about half turn into adverts and revenue which is the lifeblood of our business. But an advert doesn’t just sell a product or service. It creates an impression and a feeling about what’s being promoted. It keeps your name on display and in people’s minds. It also strengthens your brand, more so when you choose the right media for your image. If you’re a global brand you’ll need to be everywhere, and if you’re local you’ll need to be everywhere locally within your area. Which is exactly what we’re trying to be. During December we began rolling out our dispensers in shops and recep ons on the edges of our area. Please see page 59 for those places now stocking Soar Valley Life magazines. If your organisa on would like a dispenser please get in touch and we’ll get one to you pronto! Watch our B2B pages over the coming months where we’ll be showing and telling more ways to promote your business... Steve Johns
But, for all us lesser mortals, and those of us with more than one mouth to feed, we have to spread the word in whatever ways we can afford. Over the last few months we have looked at one par cular aspect of marke ng ‐ that of business networking. Mary and I know for sure how effec ve this can be. As a result of (and her a endance at) The Loughborough Ladies Business Group, we have several new regular adver sers in Soar Valley Life. Having just done a quick count, I can tell you that we found about a quarter of all of our adver sers from networking ac vity. Therefore we whole heartedly recommend business to business networking with no axe to grind other than the fact that we know it can work for almost any business.

Paws for thought 40th anniversary appeal for a new veterinary suite at Woodside Animal Centre in Leicester. Please help us care for more animals in need, urges Bill Oddie... “When animals are in distress, suffering from neglect or cruelty, they need the best care we can give them. That’s why I hope everyone who loves animals will join me in supporting Care 4 Paws. This fantastic appeal aims to raise £1 million for a state-of-the-art vet suite at Woodside Animal Centre in Leicester. As they approach their 40th anniversary at Scudamore Road, they need our help to take animal welfare in Leicestershire to the next level. The new suite will cost effectively provide care for more animals and help to quickly eliminate distress and suffering, providing quicker treatment times. With this suite, Woodside Animal Centre will be able to make their money go further, which they can then spend helping more animals to live a happy life. With this wonderful new facility, the centre will be able to treat four times as many animals. As the number of challenging animals taken in at the centre rises, the charity desperately need this new suite to continue the vital work of rehabilitating and finding new homes for animals.
Hard work and dedication from the Woodside staff, volunteers and Trustees, have made this one of the RSPCA’s top re-homing centres with one of the lowest return rate of animals in the UK. It provides invaluable services to the local community as well as the RSPCA regionally and nationally. I am delighted to be Patron for the Care 4 Paws Appeal, as the centre embarks on a new stage in its history, to provide even more animals with the loving care they need and deserve. This is the biggest fundraising challenge Woodside has ever undertaken and we need your support. Your donation will be rewarded with the knowledge that you have helped countless animals to recover from neglect, cruelty and abandonment and to find new forever homes. Thank you.”

The Art and Science of a Beau ful Smile A visit to the den st is not high on the list of preferred ac vi es for many people; in my day it was remedial, only there when needed if you had a toothache... Then, some me in the 1970s I guess, den stry became more than just fillings or extrac ons ‐ kids began wearing braces, crowns and implants became readily available as alterna ves to false teeth, and a six monthly check up included a hygienist appointment too. Which leads me to believe that oral health and the state of the na on’s teeth is far be er now than at any me in human history; fluoride in our water for more than 50 years along with advancements in toothpaste and technology must surely have had a drama c effect on the health of our mouths and their contents? Not according to Nilesh, principle den st at Gorse Covert Dental Prac ce. “The modern diet reverses many of the posi ve advances in oral health. High sugar foods, processed meals and increased snacking are the main culprits. The idea of three square meals a day is long gone for many people. And now, with half the popula on not going to the den st regularly, oral health is much worse today than it was twenty years ago!” Running my tongue over my teeth I felt a twinge of guilt followed by a pulse of toothache, but it passed as quickly as it came. “Sounds like all doom and gloom
then?” I asked. “Of course not,” con nued Nilesh, “We believe that oral health is the key to your overall health and we treat our pa ents with this general principle foremost in our minds. We call it a holis c approach to den stry ‐ we view the pa ent completely, not just as a set of teeth. We look at all the aspects that go into crea ng the best possible condi ons to achieve ul mate oral health. We like to treat our pa ents as friends and of course we want the best for them; we view this rela onship as a two way process from the very start. A new pa ent will be offered an ini al free consulta on, where we can discuss together what op ons are available and the likely costs of various forms of treatment. This is followed by a longer appointment where we make a full examina on las ng between one and one and a half hours including oral x‐rays. This gives the pa ent a full 30 page document covering
everything that’s possible to provide, together with costs and payment plans where necessary.” By now I was wondering why I had not experienced this style of den stry before. I was stuck in the remedial way of considering my teeth and oral health. I asked Nilesh how he came to adopt this approach. “A er studying den stry at medical college I undertook further study and training in the United States at the Pankey Ins tute of Advanced Den stry. There I learned to really treasure teeth and just how important they are for each and every one of us. The key to crea ng and maintaining a beau ful and confident smile is through the applica on of both the art and science of den stry. And that is really what we’re all about, here at Gorse Covert Dental.”

HS Foot Care Services re-open Mrs Kropp’s surgery in Mountsorrel Alan & Maxime Postlethwaite, both HCPC registered Podiatrists, had the opportunity to re-open Mrs Kropp’s old surgery, in Halstead Road Mountsorrel, just across the road from their existing surgery...
Maxime Postlethwaite in her new foot care surgery
Mrs Kropp’s son-in-law Alan said, “Our new surgery has proved to be very popular, so it is important that we now expand our capacity. In order to keep our unique and professional practice as it is for our patients, it makes sense to re-open the old surgery at number 29. We have upgraded the equipment and replicated as best as possible the current surgery so that patients will have the same experience and level of care. My daughter Maxime will work in the new surgery from January 2015, giving her more flexibility in time with her growing patient base. We will continue to work together to perform the
more specialised services from our existing surgery, such as Nail Surgery and Manufacture of Orthotics. Mrs Kropp would have been so proud to see it. Many local residents will remember it as a surgery for over 40 years!”

When your Image needs Impact I have two sticks I lean on when making photographs: less is more and I don’t do subtle. Let me explain… By ‘less is more’ I mean experience has taught me that most of the photographs I take please me and others more if they concentrate on a part of the view rather than the whole. Reduce what you see down to the simplest elements which a viewer can fix upon, this will retain the eye and interest in the scene. This is not to say I do not take broad view landscapes, I do this a lot. Most good landscape views will however have a strong foreground interest. Another photographer told me of a good way to explain this technique: ‘Find a really nice view and then put something even better in front of it!’ I like that and it brings us straight back to simplifying the image - less is more. ‘I don’t do subtle’ is not perhaps the most accurate way of explaining my intentions; every image does not have to have high saturation nor a high contrast. What it must have is all the appeal/impact I can give it. This may be contrast or saturation; it may require a vignette to constrain the viewers’ eye in the frame or mist to obscure the unimportant parts and maximise the main subject’s appeal.
Landscape photographer available for commissions. Beautiful pictures of Britain to decorate your home or as gifts. Available online or from Gallery 18, Churchgate, Loughborough.
May the light be with you…
