GHOST STORY

JENNY BELIEVES HER new home is haunted, but her husband isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, their longtime friend and her new partner. Belief and skepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening and it’s getting closer; if they stay up until 2:22 a.m., they’ll know what it is. 2:22—A Ghost Story, through Dec. 4 at the Ahmanson Theatre, is an intriguing and brilliantly funny supernatural thriller written by Danny Robins, creator of the BBC podcast “The Battersea Poltergeist,” and directed by Matthew Dunster. All four actors—Constance Wu, Finn Wittrock, Anna Camp and Adam Rothenberg—make their Ahmanson debuts. The show broke box-office records for a new play at London’s Noel Coward Theatre and was hailed as the West End’s theater event of the year. 135 N. Nubian and Mayan Treasures

THE GETTY PRESENTS Códice Maya de México at the Getty Museum in Brentwood through Jan. 15 and Nubia: Jewels of Ancient Sudan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades through April 3. Nubia—a region along the Nile River in present-day Egypt and Sudan— was home to some of Africa’s earliest civilizations; the exhibition highlights superbly crafted jewelry

and other precious objects exca vated in Sudan in 1913-32 that viv idly display the grandeur of ancient Nubian society. Around 900 years ago, a Mayan scribe made a sacred book that tracked and predicted the movements of the planet Venus. Today, the Códice Maya de México is the oldest book of the Americas, one of four Mayan manuscripts that predate the arrival of Europeans. 310.440.7300, getty.edu

Diva plays diva

FAMOUS OPERA SINGER Floria Tosca seems to have it all; audi ences cherish her artistry as well as tales of her tempestuous off stage romances. Now she’s forced to play a real-life role she never imagined: Torn between devotion to her lover and the machina tions of a treacherous sociopath, she’s in a predicament with fatal consequences for them all. L.A. Opera presents four leading artists of their generations in Puccini’s Tosca at the Dorothy Chandler

Pavilion Nov. 19-Dec. 10. Soprano Angel Blue plays the glamor ous but tough-as-nails titular heroine; tenors Michael Fabiano and Gregory Kunde share the role of Mario Cavaradossi; bassbaritone Ryan McKinny is the evil Scarpia, who likes nothing more than seeing his victims suffer. In her company debut, Ukrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv leads a production staged by director John Caird. 135 N. Grand Ave., downtown, 213.972.8001, laopera.org

It’s Just You and Me

Recitals allow musical artists to determine every element of their performances and to engage more closely with their audiences.

LOS ANGELES OPERA artist in residence Russell Thomas has performed in operas around the world; he stars in L.A. Opera’s Otello at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in the spring.

But when Thomas takes the stage at the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall downtown on Feb. 25, there will be no costumes, sets or opera choristers on hand—only the tenor himself and accompany ing musicians performing works by some of his favorite composers.

“I wish I did more recitals,” Thomas says. “In an opera, you’re doing someone else’s artistic vision.

“In a recital, I get to be the artist, the director, the artistic director. I decide the content—every aspect of that performance is my decision. I find the collaborators I want to work with and I select the repertoire. Recitals allow artists to flex their artistic muscles and show people their point of view.”

That’s a far-flung concept from the original meaning of “recital”—a legal term dating back to the 1500s, and still in use today—referring to a formal statement that often begins with the word “Whereas.”

No such proclamations are needed for artistic recitals, which,

by contrast, are usually less formal than the operas or ensemble performances that more often make up much of a musical career.

Recitals are also more intimate, fostering a closer relationship with attendees usually missing from other performances.

“I enjoy taking the opportunity in such a setting to actually speak, to verbally connect with the audience,” says violinist Randall Goosby. He appears in recital with pianist Zhu Wang at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ intimate Samueli Theater in Costa Mesa on Dec. 2 and performs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall downtown Mar. 30-31.

In a recital, Goosby says, “I talk a little bit about the pieces. It’s rare to have that opportunity in a huge concert hall with 80 musicians.”

The scaled-down environment presents its own challenges, Thomas notes. “As there are no big sets and costumes … the mood is

set by the artists collaborating on stage. Holding the audience’s attention can be more difficult.”

Captivating music, dynamically performed, helps keep listeners involved. For Goosby, choosing recital repertory always starts with, “What’s the piece you really want to play?” He and Wang have to “feel a real affinity and connection to the music,” he says. “If you don’t feel something as the artist, what can

you possibly have to communicate to an audience?”

The starting point for Goosby’s program at the Samueli was a Beethoven violin sonata, followed by later works that had a connection to the piece or composer.

For his recital at the Colburn School, Thomas chose a theme of romance, sensuality and sexual ity. He commissioned new pieces or new arrangements by veteran African-American composers and by rising composers teamed with a poet or librettist.

“I noticed that there wasn’t enough vocal chamber music by African-American composers,” Thomas says. “I wanted to sing chamber music, something exquisitely sensual—and the repertoire just did not exist.”

Venue size can help determine the program.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES

A Play Turned into a Movie… Turned into a Play – The Journey of A FEW GOOD MEN

Aaron Sorkin is that rare playwright whose work commands attention simply because he is the author. How his first play reached the stage… then the screen… and then the stage again… is an unusual tale, best told by Sorkin himself:

“I got out of college where I was a theater major, came to New York, and had a whole bunch of survival jobs,” he said in a TV interview, recalling the mid-1980s. “But mostly, my steadiest survival job was working as a bartender in Broadway theaters. I wrote most of A Few Good Men on cocktail napkins at the Palace Theater during the first act of La Cage Aux Folles” [which was playing the Palace at the time].

By a stroke of luck, the script made it into the hands of David Brown, the legendary producer of The Sting, Jaws, and The Verdict, who was looking for another courtroom drama.

“And here’s where things got really crazy,” Sorkin remembered. “David said, ‘I love this, and I want to option the film rights.’ I’m still a bartender at the Palace Theater. And I said, ‘Well, the thing is, I really want to see this done as a play.’ He said, ‘Well, what if I were to do it as a play first?’

The play opened on Broadway to positive reviews in 1989 and, three years later, Brown produced the film version starring Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise. Eventually, Sorkin determined that the screenplay was better than the play “mostly because I was a better writer when I wrote the screenplay than when I wrote the play. I’d also had the opportunity of watching the play for 14 months on Broadway – to learn from that, to see what’s working. There were things that I was never wild about that I had an opportunity to fix.”

One scene he wanted to fix was final confrontation between the young lawyer and the Colonel. On stage, Sorkin says, “it was a thrilling courtroom scene. There were a lot of pyrotechnics, and it worked theatrically. [But] it was a bit of a lie, the whole thing. I was kind of ‘skilling’ my way through it, really. And [in the movie], I was kind of committed to making sure that we had the same effect but getting to it in a real way. It’s always much more gratifying to get that response when you know that you deserve it.”

Amazingly, Sorkin got another chance at the play itself. “We sent out a national tour of the play after I had finished the screenplay,” he says. “In fact, we were in the middle of shooting the screenplay. And I was so pleased with the work that we were able to do on the screenplay that I went back and rewrote the play. Kind of took it to a third level.”

And now La Mirada Theatre’s crackerjack cast, along with keen-eyed director Casey Stangl and her expert design team, take it to a fourth level with a performance that’s as riveting as one could hope to see. And so, the journey of A FEW GOOD MEN continues.

Follow the Fabric

After building a prestigious national brand, artist and textile designer Serena Dugan now creates collections with a more personal connection. by ROGER GRODY

SERENA DUGAN, CO-FOUNDER and former chief creative officer of Serena & Lily—whose beachinspired collections fill retail show rooms from the Palisades to the Hamptons—departed in 2017 to launch Serena Dugan Studio. The transition provided an opportunity to focus on her painting, ultimately leading to creative expressions with textiles, wall coverings and rugs.

“I wanted to reconnect with my roots as a painter,” says Dugan of her initial inspiration for Serena

Dugan Studio, which is emerging as a leading name in high-end fabrics. “My collections reflect escape and travel, capturing the spirit of jetsetting before jet-setting was fancy,” says Dugan. “There’s a breezy, opti mistic quality to my compositions and patterns.” Sausalito is home to the artist/designer’s eponymous studio, but Dugan maintains a strong presence in Los Angeles.

As an artist, she finds textile design to be a natural outlet for her creativity and dramatic flair. Aside from the designer’s acclaimed Indian block prints, which bear the personal stamps of the artisans who print them, many Serena Dugan Studio fabrics are handcrafted in Los Angeles using solvent-free inks on Belgian linen. Significantly improved performance fabrics, originally designed for outdoor use, are now used indoors as well, particularly val ued by families with children or pets.

After decades of disregard, wallpaper is again a prominent medium that innovative designers are reimagining. “Remembering some of the wallpaper I grew up

with, I’d roll my eyes, thinking it was hopelessly out of style. But now no room is off limits for wallpaper,” she says. Dugan notes today’s consum ers appreciate the luscious, tactile qualities of woven grasscloth and the paperweave coverings to which she affixes her modern, abstract motifs.

“I always assumed that more out landish color combinations would be hard to sell, but that’s not necessar ily the case,” she continues. “People have an appetite for bold colors that are well executed.” According to Dugan, designers and homeowners are exploring greens as a departure from prevailing blues; she suggests the next trend may involve oranges, reds and terra-cottas or shades of peach and apricot, as they are natu ral counterpoints to blues.

Dugan’s art, fabrics and wallpa per are offered in Los Angeles at Hollywood at Home, the showroom of designer Peter Dunham in the La Cienega Design Quarter; she is also collaborating with Erik Lindström, one of the most influential rug mak ers in the nation.

art into these beautifully crafted pieces had me thrilled,” recalls Dugan.

Though aware of Dugan’s work as a fabric designer, Lindström was particularly attracted to her art: “Serena’s paintings are colorful and graphic, two things that I look for when designing a rug collection,” he explains.

Dugan’s rug designs are the only products literally transferred from her paintings. The Serena Dugan collection by Erik Lindström reflects abstract creations inspired by the art and architecture of Mexico City and are named after three iconic neighborhoods: Condesa, Polanco and Roma.

Even as Dugan's reper tory expands, she is a painter at heart; though proud of the Serena & Lily brand she helped build, she does not envision another all-encompassing line. Her current venture, she says, “is more personal, more attuned with my passions.”

STILL WATERS

Alice Waters’ Lulu at the UCLA Hammer Museum. / by jenn tanaka /

Lulu, the first Los Angeles restaurant from Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters, opened one year ago in the courtyard of UCLA’s Hammer Museum.

To complete their vision of the restaurant business model that would become Lulu, legendary chef and food activist Waters and Hammer Museum director Ann Philbin sought a chef who would not only celebrate seasonality and sustainable farming but who could also create a gathering place for art lovers and students.

In addition to his kitchen qualifications,

chef David Tanis, a 25-year veteran of Chez Panisse, has written cookbooks and penned a column for The New York Times Enhancing the experience, Jesse McBride, former food and beverage head at Chateau Marmont and the Standard hotel group, came on as director of operations.

In keeping with her core philosophies, Waters’ restaurant advocates regenerative farming. Even the decor is an ode to sustain ability; designer Sean Daly collaborated with artist Christina Kim to create the indooroutdoor courtyard using local materials.

exhibition admission is free. A Lulu repast is ideal after strolling the galleries.

Sourcing for the threecourse prix fixe midday menu follows Tanis’s ethos of “market cooking”: Offerings change daily and ingredients shine.

Appetizers might include wine country classics such as baked Sonoma goat cheese with garden lettuce or a California halibut carpaccio with sweet Meyer lemon.

Focaccia sandwiches are stuffed with mozza rella, arugula and Casella prosciutto; an eggplant banh mi reflects the area’s surging plant-based dining scene.

Mains might include a seafood stew with Dungeness crab and local rock cod or a North African lamb tagine with saffron couscous. An olive oil walnut cake is topped with pomegranate seeds.

Bistro-inspired starters at dinner include a yellow carrot soup with ginger cream and a curly endive salad with bacon, egg and mustard vinaigrette.

Entrees lean toward Cal-Italian comfort food. Grilled Baja striped bass finished with salsa verde and aioli dots evokes a Southern Californian fish ing trip. Grass-fed beef tagliata, aka Italian grilled steak, is simply sliced and served atop Parmesantopped peppery arugula.

Waters, Philbin and Tanis hope that a handson experience at Lulu will plant a seed, as it were, inspiring a new generation of regenerative-minded farmers and chefs to find their calling and feed the people.

“There is no point in playing, otherwise—there are plenty of recordings and videos. The energy it takes to play live comes from this special risk, this commitment, the opening up, the vulnerability. If one is not willing to do that, there is no point.”

NO RUSTLING PAGES, no killing trees . . . Of all the innovations to have come out of the pandemic, the new Performances program platform, accessed on any digital device, may be least likely to disappear in the foreseeable future. Not only had its time come—it had been long overdue.

Performances provides the programs for 20 SoCal performingarts organizations, from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Ahmanson to San Diego Opera, where the app made its debut.

The touchless platform provides cast and player bios, donor and season updates and arts-centric features. Audiences receive a link and code word that instantly activate the app; QR codes are posted, too.

Screens go dark when curtains rise and return with the house lights. Updates—repertory changes, understudy substitutions, significant donations—can be made right up to showtime, no inserts necessary.

Other features include video and audio streams, translations and expanded biographies.
