A Meeting of the Wives

TONY AWARD-winning Broadway sensation

SIX The Musical arrives at the San Diego Civic Theatre, June 27-July 9. Presented in the form of a pop concert, the campy British musical comedy—with music, book and lyrics by Roby Marlow and Lucy Moss—introduces us to the six wives of Henry VIII, who go from tudor queens to pop icons. In a modern retelling (spanning 500 years), each wife tells her story to see who suffered the most at the hands of the notorious, ruthless King of England, who reigned in the 1500s. The “winner” of this makeshift competition of sorts gets to be the lead singer of the band. The seemingly outrageous plotline somehow works, further enhanced by an electric score. In fact, the Broadway album, SIX: Live on Opening Night, surpassed 6 million streams in its first month— debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard cast album charts. 1100 Third Ave., downtown, broadwaysd.com

Well Stitched

A POWERFUL NEW exhibit is now on view at Mingei International Museum: 25 Million Stitches: One Stitch, One Refugee. Guest curated by Korean-American fiber artist Jennifer Kim Sohn, it’s a community project that acknowledges each displaced person with a hand-sewn stitch—using estimates by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The show comprises 2,000 embroidered, hand-stitched muslin panels that combine to make 408 floor-to-ceiling flags. Sohn and a team of volunteers crowd-sourced 2,300 stitchers from 37 countries and all 50 U.S. states. Personal narratives are woven in throughout, bringing to light the humanity behind the numbers. The exhibit is on view through Oct. 15. 1439 El Prado, Balboa Park, mingei.org

WEST COAST PREMIERE JUNE 7–JULY 2

DIRECTED BY DAVID ELLENSTEIN

While sitting on her favorite park bench in Washington, D.C., Eleanor Roosevelt reveals the many facets of the dynamic and iconic First Lady. Award-winning actor Kandis Chappell takes on the portrayal as the witty, feisty, vulnerable woman who was considered the heart of FDR’s presidency. Exploring both the public and private persona of this remarkable woman, Mark St. Germain (Dancing Lessons, Becoming Dr. Ruth, Freud’s Last Session) deftly captures the essence of the woman who left an indelible mark on American history.

Mainly Mozart Magic

In Its 35th Anniversary Year, the Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival Expands to Two New La Jolla Venues

WHEN PERFORMING

ARTS groups across the country closed their doors during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the future was uncertain for many. How long would the lockdown last? How could they continue to

bring their performances to the public? And most importantly, when it finally ended, would audiences return in person?

For San Diego’s Mainly Mozart, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, the pandemic provided

some clear answers and an outcome no one might have predicted—least of all its co-founder, CEO and Artistic Director, Nancy Laturno. In July 2020, just a few months after the lockdown began, Mainly Mozart became

the first arts organization in the U.S. to perform live classical music in front of live audiences since the start of the pandemic. In October 2020, the group performed what was California’s first live classical concert series in

Love All is the triumphant story of the rise of sports icon and social justice pioneer Billie Jean King. The trailblazer for equality faced tough competition on the court and adversity in the world against a backdrop of the massive social changes of the 1960s and ‘70s. Love All evokes the highs and lows of Billie Jean’s extraordinary career, and asks not just what it takes to be a champion, but what it takes to change the course of history.

Their contributions to arts and culture were acknowledged in Washington, D.C. with the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in 2019. The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery also awarded Earth, Wind & Fire with its Portrait of a Nation Prize.

2020 marked a year-long celebration of Earth, Wind & Fire’s 50th anniversary in entertainment that has taken them all around the globe playing sold out concerts. In 2021, they celebrated the 45th anniversary of their chart-topping 1975 hit “Can’t Hide Love” and released a reimagined version of the track titled “You Want My Love.” They won Best R&B Tour at the 2022 Pollstar Awards.

For their record-breaking success, they’ve also been awarded with Lifetime Achievement honors from ASCAP, NAACP, BET, and have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their reach extends to heads-of-state. They have been invited to perform for Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, who said in an interview with Rolling Stone that Earth, Wind & Fire was a “rhythm and blues and pop staple.”

With timeless songs and commitment to spreading positivity, Earth, Wind & Fire has consistently made music that has bridged the gap among all generations and nationalities. With a sound that blends funk, jazz, pop, soul and R&B, Earth, Wind & Fire launched a musical genre that can't be confined to a specific label except their own. From the funky and infectious “Let’s Groove” to the timeless dance classic “September” to the heartfelt “Reasons,” Earth, Wind & Fire’s catalog of hits has become the soundtrack to many lives; now, then and forever.

They continue to influence musicians from all generations and genres. Music giants Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Prince have studied and hailed their artistry. While many of today's charttopping artists including Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, and Solange have declared themselves super fans. Alicia Keys has called Earth, Wind & Fire "the best band ever" and Mary J. Blige showed her love by recording their song “Imagination." And the band

shared the stage with Black Eyed Peas performing on the halftime show at Super Bowl XXIX.

Their achievements are equally matched by their generosity. Over the years the band has supported various charity organizations including the Make a Wish Foundation, Race to Erase MS, the American Cancer Society, and the Human Society. In 2007, leader Philip Bailey founded Music Is Unity, which helps youth in foster care successfully transition into adulthood and provides music instruments to youth with musical aspirations but lacking the resources. Co-founder Verdine White has led important initiatives with the Girls & Boys Club of America and opened The Verdine White Foundation in Los Angeles as a mecca to serve youth with music scholarships and other programs.

In 2016, Maurice passed and his memoir, My Life with Earth, Wind & Fire was released posthumously. In 2014, Philip Bailey released a memoir Shining Star: Braving the Elements of Earth, Wind & Fire.

The music of Earth, Wind & Fire is more alive than ever as they continue to inspire new audiences and thrill those who have been with them from the beginning. Like the elements in their name, Earth, Wind & Fire’s music has withstood ever-changing trends in the world and shows no sign of vanishing as they continue to create joy and uplifting music that will forever reach a sacred universal atmosphere. 

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park™

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The Sacramento, CA based band, CAKE, continues to maintain a wealth of originality. If Hank Williams Sr. and Sly Stone were having a party together, and they played AC/DC records backwards… that would be this band. CAKE's adherence to their original guiding principles has only grown stronger.

Originally formed as a somewhat antagonistic answer to grunge, CAKE’s democratic processes, defiant self-reliance, and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves, with no evident peers in sound or perspective. In addition to writing, arranging, producing, and performing their own music, they have taught themselves to engineer their recording projects in their own solarpowered studio, which regularly generates more power than is needed to run it, causing the building’s electrical meter to run in reverse.

CAKE’s most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and was touted as “deadpan brilliance” by The New Yorker. While seamlessly blending many genres and influences, CAKE truly issues forth a sound and vision unlike any other band. The band is currently at work on their ninth album due for release during 2023. 

SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY, RAFAEL PAYARE

and ALISA WEILERSTEIN

STERN AUDITORIUM/PERELMAN STAGE AT OCTOBER 13, 2023

Continuing its rapid transformation under Music Director Rafael Payare and CEO

Martha Gilmer, the San Diego Symphony will perform at Carnegie Hall on Friday, October 13, 2023 marking their first performance there in ten years. The exciting musical program will feature the New York premiere of a San Diego Symphony commission by composer Carlos Simon, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5—part of the Orchestra’s ongoing exploration of the composer’s symphonies—and Dvořák’s celebrated Cello Concerto with soloist Alisa Weilerstein.

Music Director Rafael Payare is thrilled to return to Carnegie for his first performance with the San Diego Symphony. “For any orchestra, an appearance at Carnegie Hall is a thrilling showcase. For us, it is also the prelude to a return to San Diego to inaugurate our newly renovated home, Jacobs Music Center, now made more beautiful and enjoyable than ever.”

The Carnegie Hall concert will be the first for the Orchestra with Rafael Payare conducting, and Payare and Weilerstein’s first performance together in the New York area. Upon returning to San Diego, the Orchestra will offer a season of wide-ranging programs—from Mahler’s staggering “Resurrection” Symphony to staged performances of Prokofiev’s music for Romeo and Juliet—to reintroduce audiences to Jacobs Music Center following a $125 million renovation and restoration. Other season highlights include The Ring Without Words, a symphonic journey through Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle, conducted by Rafael Payare as an homage to his mentor, Lorin Maazel; world premieres of compositions by Texu Kim, Carlos Simon, and Vladimir Tarnopolsky; and the West Coast premieres of works by Mason Bates, Gabriela Ortiz, and Billy Childs.

performed together, in one orchestra.

For an organization whose concerts had been presented indoors for most of its existence, pivoting to outdoors was a huge step, but it seems to have been one that paid off. In 2021, Mainly Mozart’s four festivals broke the company’s alltime attendance record. “Mainly Mozart has been exploring different ways to serve our audience since COVID made us rethink venues and performances,” Laturno says. “Ticket sales have exploded since we moved outdoors. Most excitingly, 67% are new

11 audiences, and almost half are under age 40. We are seeing drivers coming from Los Angeles and the desert, as well as all over San Diego County.”

In fact, audiences have embraced outdoor concerts so enthusiastically that for its 35th anniversary, the Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival is expanding to two weeks: in Del Mar, June 15, 17 and 18; and in La Jolla, June 20, 22 and 24. As it does every year, the All-Star Orchestra brings together the largest gathering of concertmasters and principal players in North America, drawing from the most prestigious

orchestras. In addition to returning to Del Mar Surf Cup Sports Park, this year the festival expands to two new venues: the five-year-old, acoustically magnificent Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla Village; and the brand-new, outdoor Epstein Family Amphitheater on the campus of UC San Diego.

“Being able to expand our festival this way shows the tremendous demand for Mainly Mozart,” says Music Director Michael Francis, returning to lead the festival for the ninth year. “Our reach is growing and of course, we offer

great variety—between the might of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony; to the intimacy of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony chamber version in an indoor setting. We are really trying to cater to our wonderful audience and provide an exceptional example of all that Mainly Mozart is about.”

On the program at Del Mar Surf Cup Sports Park the first week: Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto and Piano Concerto No. 25, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, Brahms’ Violin Concerto, and much more. The following week, the festival moves indoors to The Conrad for Mahler’s

Los Angeles Philharmonic Concertmaster Martin Chalifour, Dallas Symphony Concertmaster Alexander Kerr, and Cleveland Orchestra Concertmaster David Radzynski—serving as rotating concertmasters of the 2023 Mainly

Mozart All-Star Orchestra.

“Mainly Mozart seized any opportunity we could to keep going. And so therefore, we’ve maintained our audience and indeed grew,” says Francis. “What we’ve learned is presenting exceptionally high quality music with the finest musicians available in a relaxed setting has paid tremendous dividends.”

“We’ve been very happy and successful at Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar, and we see a long future there,” Laturno says. “But we’re also very excited to have the opportunity to perform indoors in the beautiful

acoustics of The Conrad, in a different repertoire that isn’t appropriate for an outdoor setting. That and the new Epstein Family Amphitheater are an enormous gift to the San Diego community, enabling us to broaden our geographic reach and the range of experiences we can offer.”

Laturno agrees with Francis that although the programming is still classical music, the more casual vibe of outdoor concerts seems to agree with new, younger audiences. “At Del Mar Surf Cup Sports Park, patrons have their choice of seating at tables for four, or

And there’s a lot for audiences to look forward to. “There are actually quite a lot of Mainly Mozart firsts this year,” Francis says. “We’ll be performing pieces that we haven’t played before, including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to finish the festival, which will be epic. Considering many of the musicians that make up the All-Star Orchestra are coming to San Diego directly from a full season of performances with their home orchestras, it’s a tribute to Mainly Mozart that they are eager to participate. “Artists are so happy to come to perform with us here—they love the collegiality and the strong sense of family that has developed between the artists and the audiences,” Laturno says. “Of course, coming to San Diego in the summer is also a huge draw!”

Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar has become a real favorite, and it so brilliantly achieves that summer festival atmosphere. But I also think the new UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater is going to be a real hit, with good acoustics and a great experience for everyone. We’ll also have the intimacy of The Conrad.”

Francis continues, “The programming includes lots of familiar favorites alongside several new pieces. And whether it’s your 100th concert or your first, we firmly believe that we can help you find your personal connection to this incredible music that helps define each of our lives.”

The festival runs June 15, 17 and 18; and June 20, 22 and 24. For tickets and more info: mainlymozart.org
