Saint Lucia Carnival 2022 It’s been 1,086 days… It was bad enough having to wait 365 days. By Annel Beausoleil Who could have guessed that when the
music stopped and trucks packed up at the conclusion of Carnival Tuesday’s las lap jam in 2019 the most painful tabanca ever was about to descend. By the time we were ready to do it all again, we were facing one of the most unyielding pandemics the world has experienced: Covid-19. For two painful years, revellers just had to sit back and watch what should have been their time to shine being eclipsed by the microscopic virus they nicknamed ‘The Rona’. Tourism minister Hon Dr Ernest Hilaire took to the press in March to announce the green light had been given for Saint Lucia Carnival 2022. The minister went on to say that “life goes on… It was inevitable for people to release some stress, as they gradually come through the curfews and lockdowns that were regulated to deal with this global crisis.” Major stakeholders - including Events Company of St Lucia, Saint Lucia Tourism Authority and the Cultural Development Foundation - have joined other corporate entities to come on board for the festival. On 29 March, the schedule for Saint Lucia Carnival 2022 was officially launched online. This year will see the return of many of the most popular fetes and shows, including the ever-popular Colour Me Red, hosted by pre-eminent carnival band Red Unlimited,

and U4RIA or ‘U10’ from Saint Lucian soca artist Teddyson John and TJP (the Teddyson John Project). Other favourites on this list are Famalay, Remedy, Soak’T, Mess and a plethora of boat rides even… Vice. This year revellers can also count the crowning of new kings and queens, as events coordinators assure us that the National Carnival Queen Competition, National Calypso Monarch Competition, and the Groovy and Soca Monarch Competitions will return. Of course, the events that all die hard carnival-lovers have been anticipating most keenly are the Monday and Tuesday Parades of the Bands or, as they say, ‘Mega J to Mega J’. Ever since Carnival 2022 was announced, carnival bands have been coming out of their hiatus. Many of these bands, including Just 4 Fun, Legends, Island Tribe and Red Unlimited, have already launched and have given eager bacchanalists a chance to preview an array of vibrant and colourful costumes. More bands are still to come, and as we draw closer to the return of everyone’s favourite time of year. Carnival 2022 will surely prove that the 1,086-day wait was not in vain.

Mas Bands
Carnival would be nothing without masquerade (mas), the
costumes that deliver the spectacle and pageantry of the event. While it’s great to watch, most would agree it is even better to participate. Choose between J’Ouvert, the pre-dawn parade on Carnival Monday which starts the street activities, when you will be smeared in paint or mud, and the Parade of the Bands on Monday and Tuesday when prettier, more structured costumes are on show. Or don’t choose - do both! In a normal year close to a dozen mas bands would be on the road for Saint Lucia Carnival, but at the time of publication we could confirm just six. There is nothing to compare with playing mas and putting on a costume. It’s one of the best ways to enjoy Carnival, and even if you only experience it once the memories of that time will remain with you forever. Here are some of the bands you can get involved with for Saint Lucia Carnival 2022.

Fuzion Mas blends traditional and contemporary carnival features and says that its focus is on offering the most comprehensive carnival experience in Saint Lucia. The band is all-inclusive and has gone to great lengths to provide stunning costumes plus top-notch service and facilities.
Focused on being distinctive, IslandTRIBE has brought together entertainment industry personnel, young professionals and dynamic talents to create “a spectacle in entertainment, premium services and mind-boggling fun”. The band is oriented towards the 18-45 age group.
Just4Fun says that it takes pride in being the first super all-inclusive party band to provide “the ultimate carnival experience” in Saint Lucia Carnival 2022. The band has been offering its masquerade experience every year since it first hit the road in 2000 and has gone from strength to strength each year since then.

Teddyson John has carved a name for himself in the world Caribbean music and has an enthusiastic following. Teddyson was born and raised in a devout Christian family in Castries, Saint Lucia. From a young age, his talent and craft were nurtured in the church and he developed a lasting passion for playing drums, bass guitar and keyboards. He began his career in soca in 2007. His 2015 single Allez helped bring him into the spotlight in the Caribbean region and beyond. He has shared the stage with many notable international artists, including Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, George Duke, John Legend, Michael Bolton, Air Supply, New Edition, Keith Sweat, Neyo, Shaggy and Brick and Lace. In 2019, Teddyson was featured on the late Blaxx’s soca anthem Just So. Teddyson’s current discography includes Sink In Ya Back featuring Cooyah on the Chicken and Rice Riddim, Howdy (2022) and Gyal Go (2022).
He has been a force to reckon with since he appeared on the soca music scene. Ricky T (Ricky Joseph) is a household name who is still serving his fans with one hit after another. Ricky has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Madison Square Garden in New York City. He’s had spectacular success in his home country, notching up 21 competition wins, including Road March, Power Soca Monarch, and Caribbean Soca Monarch and Groovy Soca Monarch titles. His ever-evolving career has transcended the bounds of Saint Lucia and penetrated neighbouring islands. Some of the songs Ricky T has released over the years include Pressure Boom (2008), Wheel and Come Again (2008), More Rum (2014), Sully (2018), Mami (2021), Done (2022) and Live Life (2022).

As a rough guide, Rodney Bay is where you’ll find the nightlife, but down south is the way to go for anyone who wants to chill in lush scenery. Recently launched by the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA), Collection de Pépites is a programme that showcases 400-plus smaller properties, all accredited by the SLTA. Amongst the B&Bs, boutiques, inns and luxury villas in the Collection de Pépites you’re sure to find some gems. The name originates in the island’s French heritage and means a collection of small pieces or nuggets of gold.

Getting to Saint Lucia
Travelling to Saint Lucia from the UK, whether
for Carnival or any kind of getaway, could not be easier. British Airways provides flights from London Gatwick. TUI flies once a week from London Gatwick and Virgin Atlantic flies three times a week from London Heathrow in the winter. Inter-island travel is well-served by several airlines including LIAT, Air Caraïbes, Air Antilles and Caribbean Airlines. Check with your travel agent or contact the airlines direct for specific dates and availability. Most aircraft land at Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in Vieux Fort, located 40 miles south of the capital, Castries. George F.L. Charles Airport is an inter-island airport just outside Castries.
