Introduction of the Society Since its establishment in 1989, the Society has been committed to organizing educational and recreational events for students and staff at the University of Hong Kong. It has also devoted itself to raising awareness of issues in its related disciplines, such as cultural studies and textual analysis. The Society primarily serves to promote Comparative Literature as an intellectually engaging and rewarding subject with interdisciplinary perspectives. We truly hope that you will enjoy our upcoming activities, gain valuable insights and come to appreciate the memories made along the way.

From the Editor’s Desk What is failure? It might be hard to define failure, because everyone has their own interpretation of this word. So, it is better to ask, what is failure to you? For me, even the smallest misstep counts as failure. Failure can be large or small, and it can either have a small or huge impact on our lives. It’s scary to even think about how many times we have failed or will fail. However, success and failure are two sides of the same coin. Sometimes, the reason we might have succeeded is because we have learnt a valuable lesson from our mistakes or missteps. Of course, there might be times that certain failures are too much to handle and we just feel hopeless. However, is it okay to avoid doing something just because we fear failure? In my opinion, we don’t always decide on something because we want to achieve success but because we want to gain a worthwhile experience. Thus, the journey and the experience become more important than the destination. By reading this newsletter, I hope that you can gain some insights on this theme and realize the important role of failure in our day-to-day lives.

主席 Chairperson 林穎 Anna Lam “If you had to symbolize Comparative Literature with something, what would it be?”

“A line,’’ I said. “It may look like a line, but if you zoom in close, you can see dotted, wavy lines, even a ball of it. Zooming out, they form a continuation.”

Over this year, I’ve taken more time to understand why I used this symbol to represent CompLit.

Of course there were loads of details that I don’t remember, making up the fragmented lines. Then came the mind-blowing moments when the lines would diverge into a multitude of crossroads. The same could be said with seung jong too. It’s a 24/7 rollercoaster ride where you always fix your cart and build your track but hey there’s always a nearby ice cream snack place at the corner.

The 9 of us working our way together, trying, failing, trying to fail less. And goofing off while being serious beans.

I try not to think of lok jong as a goodbye. Once a mark’s been made, it makes a difference. The feelings from it stay even stronger.

Where is the beginning and where is the end? Where would you like to see?

內務主席 Internal Vice Chairperson 周芷琳 Jocelyn Chau How can I ask myself to condense everything I’ve felt into words? And yet here we are. Rings true to this experience itself, I think. Making it up as one goes. Like climbing Mount Everest with only a T-shirt on. (Uh, please­– don’t do that.) You know that estranged feeling you have towards the simplest word because you stared at it for far too long? Looking at the 8 people who’ve gone through hell and back with me sometimes feel the same. You realize that you realize more about them. See something underneath the surface, something that shines in each person. Some words I use feel different, I think, heavier than I’m used to. I tell myself, “it’s still your teenage years. Maybe you need to fuck up to save your sanity.” On this adventure I’ve embraced that mentality way too many times. What’s the point of getting somewhere without failing somewhere first? If you’re doing it with someone else, then they’ll call it normal. If you’re laughing while you’re doing it with 8 other people, then you can call it crazy. And you can love it until you forget it. If you ask me, in the future, will I take this same leap again? You’ll get a “Hell no” from me out loud. But if you choose to listen closer, I still think scars are fucking cool. I might love to leave more.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been almost a year since I became part of this society, not only have I gained skills that will help me in the future, I’ve also managed to make 8 new lifelong friends, with whom I’ve shared tons of precious memories with! These guys have inspired me in multiple ways, and all the memories will remain with me foreveaaaaaađ&#x;’“ I’m grateful to have been part of this society, and I’m excited to see what the upcoming cabinets will bring to the tableđ&#x;‘Ż â€? It’s been a long and tough ride, but every bit of it was worth it, thank you to everyone for making all the events this year a success!

From holding the Bazaar to making the financial statements and budgets, it was all a very valuable lesson. We encountered many difficulties along the way, even FAILURE to stick to our original plans or budgets but the important thing is that we always adapted and made the best out of the situation that we were presented with. Apart from that, we had a lot of fun and made amazing memories and what’s important is that I am sure that the knowledge and skills we have all gained will aid us all in years to come.

上莊 has been a very worthwhile experience but, of course, not without its challenges. Those challenges may not have always resulted in success, but we really learned a lot from trying and occasionally failing as well. What made the success sweeter or the failure less bitter was the company of my jongyaus. Handling things were made easier and the support from them was much needed. I have learned a lot of new things and gained more knowledge. The whole experience has really made me appreciate a lot, such as time, family, friends, school life and the effort societies has to put in. It’s a team effort, and I am grateful for having such a wonderful team.

oh yeah looking at other champ champ sheung jong ppl I really looked forward to having cool parties, wearing suits and feeling like a pro. But then later the moment of realization came when you find out the only parties you gonna have are the lists of inaug ceremonies where you relentlessly try to clear the stock of your name cards which otherwise you could not think of using on any other occasions to throw away, and the agms and mock cams which are going to haunt you for years! Ok that’s how you learn to cope with struggles when the reality fails to meet your expectations coz at least I feel proud and genuinely blessed to have been through a whole year of jong events not alone but with a really JENG squad of jeng bao ppl. So even if we fail to look like professionals or champions we are the best in being ourselves and our jong heuheuheu. Anyways I LOVE MY JONG!!!!!

Comparative Literature Festival Speaking of rebellion, does it ring a bell of bloody revolutions, edgy teens, or subversion against the mainstream? Society of Comparative Literature curated a series of events in April 2018 under the theme of Rebellion, exploring its non-violent dimensions and the formation of the so-called mainstream. We have made use of a few art forms and texts, starting from graffiti in public space, then moving onto the local cinema, popular music scene, and finally the most private dimension, the body. As the events, namely the Opening Ceremony, Exhibition, Film Show, Music Forum, and Panel Talk, progressed, everything made more sense as we come to blur lines between the private and public arenas - they are interrelated and interactive in one way or another.

Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony of the Comparative Literature Festival was held in Global Lounge on 9th April. The ceremony was well-received and was a success thanks to the speeches given by Professor Gina Marchetti and Miss Ivy Wong. We were honored to have them both speak and share their thoughts on the subject. The wonderful speeches and the exhibition kicked off the Comparative Literature Festival with a positive note. Other than that, we appreciate and give gratitude to all the people who attended the ceremony, especially the teaching and administrative staff from the Department of Comparative Literature. Thank you for making the Opening Ceremony a memorable event!

Exhibition: Space and Rebellion This year’s Exhibition involved an exploration on a form of rebellion that is present in public spaces, in so we’ve decided Graffiti, a conventionally regarded “rebellious” art form, is the most fitting as our subject. Interviewing local graffiti and LGBT+ activist group Pride in Rainbow, we were able to gain an in depth understanding beneath the artists’ every move, from what’s on their minds – “What were their intentions in choosing this specific art form?” “Do they see themselves as rebels?” – To asking questions about the technicality of this art from – “How do they graffiti?” “What tools are required?” “What were the challenges faced?” Additionally, we were glad to be given insights into the common theme that Pride in Rainbow exhibits in all their artworks: to increase exposure of the local LGBT+ community. A question that was left to be pondered was the parallel found between the Hong Kong graffiti and LGBT+ scenes - both are relatively taboo and controversial topics in society, yet they exist everywhere in our social space.The exhibition was successfully showcased around campus throughout the month of April.

Film Show: The Breakthrough of the Local New Wave

What do you think about when it comes to film and cinema? Have you ever watched movies other than mainstream Hollywood productions? This year, we screened an iconic film produced during the Hong Kong New Wave Movement, Nomad (1982). We had the honour of inviting Mr Gavin Tse, a tutor from the Hong Kong Studies Department to host a discussion with us and delve into related concepts related to rebellion. The cardinal features of New Wave films, namely sex, youth and violence were insightfully discussed in relation to the major theme of the Festival. The film show successfully drew the participants’ attention to the defiant nature of cult movies, and enhanced our understanding of the local New Wave Movement.

Music Forum: Local Indie Music on the Road The Music Forum of the Comparative Literature Festival 2018 was held in the K.K. Leung Building on 20th April. The forum was a great success all thanks to Dr. Jason Ho from the Department of Comparative Literature and independent music producer and songwriter Serrini’s engaging discussion. It was our great honour to hear about their opinions on the theme of rebellion through the art of music. The atmosphere was casual, but the profound dialogue was well-received by the audience. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the people who took part and helped us in the forum, as well as the festival, none of this would have been possible without all your support!

Panel Talk: Reimagining the Body Touching upon ‘Rebellion’ on a personal level, this year’s Comparative Literature Festival Panel Talk, held on 27th April, brought us into the world of body tattoos. Many of us may be puzzled about why some people treasure these graphics so much as to extending it into a kind of art - what is the meaning and importance of using our bodies as canvasses? We were very honoured to have tattoo artist Ms Jayers Ko, founder of Lovinkit Tattoo, as our guest and Mr Siufung Law, a tutor of the Department of Comparative Literature, well-known for his interests in gender and bodybuilding, as our moderator. Together they joined us for a 2-hour discussion, filled with questions and laughter, engaging us all upon reimagining our body with their past experience, interesting viewpoints and stories about their personal tattoos to tell. It was certainly an insightful night to remember!

Orientation Series Our orientation series this year consisted of enquiry counter, orientation camp and tea gathering, with the theme of “Chasers of The Light�. It was a nice introduction of the subject Comparative Literature to freshmen who are interested in taking related courses, and to help them gain further insight into this field of study. It was a busy, but exciting month, which helped us build friendships with people from all walks of life!

Enquiry Counter: Road to Radiance Held on the 9th and 10th of August, the enquiry counter attracted many freshmen curious and passionate about Comparative Literature. Apart from academic discussion and exchange of course information, our committee also enthusiastically shared our experience of being Executive Committee Members of the Society and our respective perspectives about Comparative Literature. To echo to the theme of light and radiance, the room was decorated with waves of fairy lights, book covers, posters and a rainbow made of name cards! Most importantly, we were happy to invite like-minded young people to join us in other Oseries events. We sincerely hope that all visitors had a whale of a time at the enquiry counter!

Orientation Camp: Composers of Spectrum Our Orientation Camp was held from the 20th to 22nd August, under the theme “Composers of Spectrum�. We started the camp with an amusing series of ice-breaking games that allowed participants to bond and familiarize themselves with each other. With newfound friendships, they set off in their brightly coloured shirts to an adventure around campus and across Hong Kong, completing interesting and memorable tasks to get to know these environments. Campfire was held the same evening, with everyone dancing around an artificial bonfire energetically to cheesy pop songs.

The second day started off with refreshing rounds of water games, with participants soaking each other with water guns and balloons in good fun. Afterwards, we retreated indoors to play a series of mass games that tested participants’ trivia knowledge on HKU, film, and literature. The checkpoint games and theme game also stimulated their problem-solving skills and impeccable teamwork. Finally, the detective game was held at night, allowing participants a special chance to help unravel a mystery. And as the last day of the camp came around, we had a writing session for everyone to share their uplifting and encouraging thoughts to one another on paper. All in all, it was a rewarding three-days-and-two-nights adventure.

Tea Gathering: Savour A Spark

The Orientation Series successfully ended on 27th August as freshmen left the Tea Gathering with laughter and a few bondings they made with one another. The gathering started with some ice-breaking games, warming the freshmen up for the checkpoint games which were set up all over campus. The games were mainly related to films, echoing the theme of Savour A Spark to introduce the attendees to one of the major domains in Comparative Literature. A bit later in the afternoon, a sharing session was successfully held with the kind assistance of Ms. Ivy Wong, Ms. Jamie Tse, and Dr. Jason Ho from the Department of Comparative Literature where freshmen got to know a lot about Comparative Literature courses and university life.

Welfare Week This year we proudly presented our welfare week with the theme ‘One day, I received a parcel...’ for all our members in September. Our welfare pack resembled that of a real parcel as it is wrapped and tied with a strip of brown paper and a string, and it is filled with artsy goodies that won our members’ hearts and attracted new members to stop by. We would also like to say a big thank you to our wide range of sponsors (including art magazines, publishers, capsule hotels, study rooms, cafes, hair and beauty product companies, etc.) for their support in making our event a success. After all, there’s nothing better than relishing in the relaxing summer mood and stating the school year slowly with a special gift.

đ&#x;ŽĽFilm Review Wake Up Sid (Dr. Ayan Mukherji, 2009) Text: Kaur Kawaljot

Wake Up Sid is a comedy-drama film directed by Ayan Mukerji that was released in 2009. This is a film about Sidharth “Sid� Mehra, a young carefree teenage boy who lacks a sense of responsibility and hopes to live with his parents for the rest of his life. Having grown up in a privileged environment he does not pay much attention to his education and he is indifferent about his future. His lack of concern starts to bother his family as he refuses to inherit his father’s business or help out in other ways. Shortly after graduating college he crosses paths with a young journalist, Aisha. This character played by Konkona Sen Sharma is a complete juxtaposition to Sid. She has her life together, a great work ethic and is focused about her future. Once Sid meets Aisha, his life takes a turn. Aisha inspires him to follow his passion which allows him to pursue a career in photography and eventually excel in it. This film highlights the idea of rising above failures and finding something that stimulates you to follow your dreams. It establishes a ray of hope despite personal obstacles and societal pressures. In this case Sid is inspired by love and transforms his dreams into a successful life for himself and the people that he cares about. Aisha and Sid’s love towards each other catalyzes the process of getting Sid’s life back on track and emerge from his past.

đ&#x;ŽĽFilm Review Little Miss Sunshine (Dir. Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, 2006) Text: Anna Lam Little Miss Sunshine is a movie about a family’s journey in a yellow van to take their daughter Olive to compete in a beauty pageant contest. Behind the sunny, bright yellow hues shown in the movie throughout, Little Miss Sunshine dives in to explore the theme of failure and how the family deals with their shortcomings in their own way. The movie comments on the problematic ideas of success through the beauty pageant contest. The juxtaposition of girls wearing heavy makeup, skimpy clothes and Olive, who appears as how she normally would, shows the built-up ideas of success that society imposes on people. Most of the children competing for Little Miss Sunshine are overly sexualized, implying an expectation on the contestants in the beauty pageant. Meanwhile, Olive stays true to her own personality and performs her parodical dance in front of the audience. Though her show seems to stray away from the “expected performancesâ€? in the pageant, she displays her real self, albeit with her imperfections of not being a slim, glamourous girl that the pageant expects from her.

The obsession of winning that the father, Richard, upholds in the film, also breaks down when he witnesses the pageant in session. At the start of the movie, a shot shows Richard selling his self-help winner program to help people embrace the winner inside of them. However, when his presentation ends, only a handful of people sitting in an empty room applauds awkwardly. Ironically, he is promoting the idea of winning without experiencing it. He also tries to impose his self-help program onto his family, which scares Olive as she cries to her grandfather, “I don’t want to be a loser� because her father hates them. His other family members, like his stepson Dwyane and brother-in-law, Frank, dismisses Richard’s ideals and their difference in beliefs create a divide in the family It is only later when Richard sits through the pageant and witnesses how twisted the beauty pageant is, and lets go of his obsession with winning to support Olive. Though Olive didn’t win the pageant, it is the bravery she had to perform on stage that

made her a winner in her own right. Her grandfather, Edwin, played a central part in telling Olive to try her best. In response to Olive’s stress on being a loser, he says, “Do you know what a loser is? A real loser is somebody who is so afraid of not winning they don’t even try.” By overthrowing Richard’s ideas and encouraging Olive give her best shot, Edwin brings out the message that there will always be value in failure as long as they make an effort to try. Contrary to the belief imposed by media and TV that winning can bring you happiness and attention, you may also lose your true self while blindly fighting for success. Staying true to your personality and little quirks may lead you to dead ends and constant failure, but it’s the mentality you treat these struggles with and how you pick up from these shortcomings that make it the most important.

Failing Forward By John C. Maxwell Published by Thomas Nelson Publishers (2007) Are you ever frustrated by your exam grades and academic performance? Have you ever called your life a failure because you can cannot afford to buy a private flat or live a successful life like the others do? Indeed, setbacks are natural since we are more or less experiencing failure on a daily basis. The question is, what is the right attitude towards failure? To answer this question, Failing Forward is an inspiring non-fiction written by John C. Maxwell that urges you to grow out of failure and transform into a better person because of failure. First and foremost, Maxwell assures that we should not develop a fear ofyfailure. Assuring us that the essence of man is imperfection, he acknowledges the inevitability to make mistakes and experience failure. Therefore, it is pivotal to understand how natural it is to encounter setbacks, considering the disastrous impact of normalizing the fear of failure. A lot of times, people hold back from taking action or embarking on adventures due to the haunting fear of failing. In the very end, those who succumb to the fear fail to open themselves to life possibilities, and risk giving up the chance to success. To Maxwell, those who never make a mistake settle for a life of which he is subservient to others who make commands for him to follow. To avoid being reduced to passive receivers of orders and re-grasp the initiative of your life, it is therefore crucial not only to face, but to conquer the fear of failure. Moreover, Maxwell points out the importance to acknowledge failure. Comparing the mentality of ordinary people and achievers, the line that distinguishes achievers is their blatant acknowledgement of failure. While many fumble for excuses or a third

party to put the blame on for their failures, achievers take the courageous move to accept failure and take responsibility for it. As a result, achievers are always the first to achieve self-improvement after reflecting on their faults and imperfections so as to grow out of failure. As Maxwell pointed out, it is important to see failure as a momentary event, which in turn paves the great path for life-long improvement and success. In addition, we should see failures as the cornerstones for success. The only way to render failure useful is to see it as a reflection of your personality and choices and learn from it. Maxwell points out that failures are the evidence that we are relentlessly trying and inching our way towards success, for which the determination and perseverance is exactly the attitude required to achieve it. Even if you encounter setbacks over and over again, it offers you a time to reflect on your ways of managing tasks and personality traits so that you can make sure you are not the problem and enhance effectiveness the next time you deal with similar adversities. This is exactly how you grow by falling forward. Therefore, why not venture out and see what happens next? The more you try, the more you learn, and thus the higher the chance of success. In general, Falling Forward is an enjoyable and life-changing read that offers its readers new perspectives on the subject of failure, experiences, attitude and commitment. The book establishes failure as a common, continuous experience which stimulates growth and changes with the right attitude.

《失敗》 張沈龑 失敗,是一個相對性的概念。在有限的經歷和視野之下去定義人生的絕對失敗,是草 率的,不理智的。我們感受的到的失敗,往往來源於某個特定的對象或者過程,因而它的 否定功能也只是指向相應的對象和過程。我們並沒有必要因為某一次失敗而否定自己 的全部經歷。就像周國平先生說的那樣:我不知道如何衡量人生的成敗,也許人生是超 越所謂成功和失敗的評價的。 然而,恰當地去認識失敗、面對失敗是很困難的,因為這些過程常常會受到感情(或者 說心理波動)的左右。我們不願意承受「承認自己脆弱而真實的人生」帶來的尷尬,因而 選擇逃避失敗、隱藏失敗,用看似燦爛實則虛無的「成功」偽裝自己。或許就是這樣,社交 網站上多了許多“成功人士”,而這些成功人士又動搖著更多在失敗中掙扎的人。生活中 的成功案例越來越多,卻並沒有堆砌成堅固的大樓,反而如同不斷膨脹的泡沫,遮蓋著 大多數人平庸而脆弱的真實人生。越來越多的人認為自己是失敗者,卻又成為“成功假 象”的助推者和製造者。 這個社會的失敗者真的在不斷增多嗎?很多時候,我們所以為的失敗,只是由於對成 功的定義太過狹隘。在世俗價值觀的浸潤下,我們更敏感的是肉眼可見的所謂成功,我 們更習慣的是在和他人的比較中用「有或無」、 「得或失」、 「優或劣」來衡量成功或失敗, 卻往往忽視了自身的內心感受和真實聲音。我們在社交網站上看到別人分享優越的生 活,也會像被迫一樣吹噓自己的生活,通過製造虛假的「成功」規避真實的「失敗」。但我 們是否能因此獲得內心的滿足和幸福呢,答案往往是否定的:假象能騙過別人,卻騙不 過自己。失敗可以讓我們迷茫、沮喪、痛苦,卻不能成為我們不好好生活的借口。與其掙 扎於製造成功的假象去迎合世界,不如擁抱真實、追隨內心。做自己的成功家和做世界 的成功家一樣值得被尊重,甚至更應該感到自豪。 在哈佛大學攻讀法學的博主hello美改在日誌中這樣寫: 「為什麽周圍人都那麽優秀 而謙遜,為什麽自己drafting的功力還是弱到不行,到底自己什麽時候才能成長為前輩 那樣專業又讓人放心的律師?沒有答案,但是覺得這樣一邊發現自己的不足一邊把自己 身上紮人的刺慢慢拔掉的過程也挺好的。」成功是許多人追求的目標,但我認為,恰恰是 可能存在的失敗讓追求的過程變得富有意義。學會理性地審視結果,多多享受追求的過 程,或許也便多了幾分在任何情況下都能從容自適的勇氣。 日劇Legal High裏有這樣一句台詞:愛上醜陋。我對它的理解是:愛上真實,即便真實 並不那麽美麗。失敗是真實的一部分。表面上,我們難以接受失敗帶來的尷尬和痛苦而

選擇偽裝;實際上,我們只是難以接受真實的自我。失敗,可以始於他人的評價,但應該 在自我的省察中得到終止甚至於昇華。可以說,失敗是一次珍貴的自己與自己對話的機 會,是一次我們得以卸下武裝、剝除世界的繁蕪冗雜,傾聽自己內心的機會。 龍應台在她的文章《跌倒----寄K》中這樣寫道: 「誰教過我們,在跌倒時,怎樣的勇敢 才真正有用?怎樣的智慧才能度過?跌倒,怎樣可以變成行遠的力量?失敗,為什麽往往 是人生的修行?何以跌倒過的人,更深刻、更真誠?我們沒有學過。」這是失敗的辛苦之 處,但我想,這也是失敗的意義所在。我們沒有學過,我們只能用自己的血肉摸索。失敗 所開啟的,是一段孤獨的修行之旅,但如果可以,我願意成為站在路邊鼓掌的人。就像她 說的那樣,「在妳與世隔絕的修行室外,有很多人希望捎給妳一句輕柔的話、一個溫暖的 眼神、一個結實的擁抱,我們都在這裏,等著妳。」

《 談失敗》 陳令瑜

人生在世,難免會碰到大大小小的不如意事。遇到難題,有的人可能會選擇採取「鴕鳥 政策」,三十六著,走為上著。只可惜我沒有李白那種「明朝散髮弄扁舟」的勇氣和瀟灑, 未能奮身拋下一切,逃離這俗世的煩囂(更沒有他的才氣,再傷春悲秋之際也能寫出那 麼多佳作,流芳百世) ;也自問沒有往哲先賢的睿智,能夠參透「失敗乃成功之母」箇中真 理,坦然面對每次失敗。雖說大部份人會選擇面對,但又有誰在經歷低谷時能不恬不躁、 悠然自得呢? 從孩提時代到現在,我的人生彷彿在一次次的失敗中度過。小時候,我的所謂「失敗」 大多圍繞微不足道的瑣碎,如忘了交功課、與要好朋友的小爭執等。不諳天高地厚的我 誤以為以上種種已稱得上「如天塌下來的大事」,直到長大後回首往事,才覺不然。 儘管不想承認,但隨著年歲的遞增,失敗似乎來得更頻密、也更沉重。 升上中學後,面對沉重的學業壓力以及父母師長的期望, 「失敗」二字好像慢慢侵蝕我 的生活,彷彿只要我稍稍走錯一步,便馬上掉進標籤著「失敗」的漩渦,萬劫不復。 *** 這樣說也許很怪,但我卻認為有能力失敗的人是幸福的,因它證明你一直挑戰和嘗 試、永不言敗。提起失敗,家喻戶曉的科學家愛迪生前後嘗試了數千次,最後才成功發明 電燈。正因接踵而來的失敗,他才得以一步步接近科學的真理,到達名為成功的康莊大

道。故長久失敗的人未必就一文不值,所謂失敗只印證他們的堅忍不拔。 我常覺得成功和失敗實際上是可轉換的,非人們想像中那麼方枘圓鑿。唐朝詩人張繼 歷經科舉落榜,在當時的人眼中,他就是一個不折不扣的失敗者。或許上天想跟他開個 玩笑,當他失意地到達楓橋旁邊,看到對岸燈火通明,頹然想起家鄉和親人,不禁提筆寫 下一首詩──著名的《楓橋夜泊》。表面上,張繼或許失敗,但誰能想到這次失敗卻為他 的成功奠下基礎呢? 說到底,失敗其實並不可怕,最可怕的是我們就此失去繼續前行的勇氣。 失敗固然教人沮喪,但它卻能讓你更好的調整未來方向,避免重蹈覆轍,少走冤枉路。 「行到水窮處,坐看雲起時」,與其汲汲營營,妄求逆轉、甚或拒絕接受失敗的局面,倒不 如放開懷抱,調整自己心態,迎接其他挑戰。在過往十八年裡,要數我最難忘的經歷,除 了那些快樂的時光,最難以忘懷的固然非失敗的經驗莫屬。但這林林總總、多如銀河沙 數的「失敗」卻恰好是滋潤我的養分,讓我變得更強。誠然,以往失敗所帶來的挫敗感和 酸楚,往往教我在下次嘗試前或徘徊卻步、或踟躕不前。但總的來說,我仍願意接受每個 挑戰,向未知的前方闖去。或許生命中許多看似不能跨越的坎兒,實際上非我們想像那 麼具挑戰性;我們總以為失敗和理想中的成功隔著一道鴻溝,其實未必。當你感到疲憊 彷徨、甚至在放棄的邊緣掙扎之時,不要忘記當初出發的初衷。這旅程縱然漫長,但只要 你願意邁出第一步,總有成功到達彼岸的一天。願所有汗水和努力都能灌溉出最碩大甜 美的果實,願所有付出都有回報,願所有失敗終能嘗到成功的甜美。願與諸君共勉。

《失敗》 Katherine Yip 中國有句古話叫做「勝者為王,敗者為寇」。一個人,不管付出了多大的努力,只要結局 是失敗的,那麼他就是個失敗者,被人嘲笑,被人輕視。相反地,成功的人往往如步雲端, 被千萬人稱之為英雄。難道只有成功的人才是英雄嗎?我想,絕對不是的。 「世界上只有一種真正的英雄主義,那就是認清生活的真相後依然熱愛生活。」羅曼· 羅蘭如是說。而人們總是恐懼失敗,渴望成功,可越是這樣畏首畏尾,越是將自己桎梏在 一寸土地,最終只能可悲地安慰自己平凡可貴。 上帝是公平的。你想要幸福來敲門,那麼必然要先踏過門前的那片荊棘。 2006年上映的電影 “The Pursuit of Happyness” 至今讓我印象深刻。我看到過主 人公的絕望,看到過他的坦然,也看到過他的自信。我曾深深同情過ChrisiGardner到處 推銷儀器失敗甚至被人偷去了儀器,我曾真切心疼過他因為貧窮而被妻子拋棄並被奪 取了兒子,我也曾情不自禁地看到他帶兒子留宿公共廁所,一邊善意欺騙孩子這是場 遊戲,一邊獨自流下絕望而無助的淚水而濕了眼眶。隨著電影情節的發展,我一步步看 著他從貧困的邊緣落到了破產的境地,一路上他處處碰壁,毫無疑問是個徹頭徹尾的 loser。 如果放在現實生活中,我想很多人會自暴自棄,怨天尤人。要么不斷自我否定並否定 他人,陷入絕望乃至抑鬱,要么走向極端,坑蒙拐騙甚至被反社會人格所支配。而真正的 英雄在看清一切現實的殘酷之後,依然抱有激情,隨時隨地準備與不公的命運進行抗 衡。男主人公ChrisiGardner正是如此。在看到開著超級跑車的人,他第一時間想的不是 嫉妒而是去請教財富的秘密。在看到一絲光明後,他又勇敢地抓住機會,珍惜一切時間 從零學習如何成為一個出色的股票經紀人。經歷過絕望的他,有著更驚人的毅力去奔向 成功,最終他成功逆襲,創辦了自己的股票經紀公司,成為了百萬富翁。 也許有人說,這不過是個電影。但我想真真切切地告訴你,這個故事的原型就是一位 名叫ChrisiGardner的黑人。電影裡展現的不幸僅僅是他真實悲慘生活的冰山一角,但 最終他都咬咬牙挺了過來。電影裡有這麼一句話一直深深打動著我,“You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it”。人們總是害怕他人的蔑視,抑或 總是被他人的喪氣話所左右,這些其實都源於自己內心的軟弱自卑,和對失敗的深深恐 懼。沒有多少人願意直面自己的傷疤,承認自己的失敗。而敢於正視自己的人,一定是了

不起的人。 因為失敗而萎靡不振的人是可憐的,而因為害怕失敗不敢踏出舒適區的人是可悲的。 克服前者需要時間的歷練和治愈。總有一天你會發現曾經所無法承受的痛苦最終會變 得云淡風輕。而後者卻往往被時間所牽絆。隨著年歲的增長,你的羈絆越多,越來越不可 能去突破自我,越來越沒有了孩童般的天真和好奇。而這也正是讓人害怕的地方。但好 在,我們正值青春。 青春是什麼?青春就是用來不斷折騰,不斷試錯,不斷發掘潛力的。沒有經歷過熱血 和跌倒的人,不足以談青春。曾經看到過一個小調查,一個人在紐約街頭放了一塊白板, 它上面寫的主題是:你所認為的最遺憾的事。過路的行人都可以自主用筆寫下心中的答 案。在最後,實驗者發現人們寫的最多的都是以“notydoing”開頭。多年以後,你會發現, 遺憾的事不是那次的失敗,而是你因為害怕失敗遲遲不肯邁向自己的夢想,擁抱彼岸的 美好。 已知的失敗也好,未知的失敗也罷,它都是人生濃墨重彩的一筆,也必然是成功巔峰 的墊腳石。年輕就是資本,既然我們已經手握這麼一大筆財富,為什麼還要害怕那小小 的失敗呢?所以,衝吧,少年,追隨著心中的吶喊向前奔跑吧!如果有一天,你因為路上的 磕磕絆絆而絕望痛苦,那麼你一定要相信,這便是你蛻變的最好時機。 沒有過不去的坎,沒有到不了的明天。千萬別後退,幸福,終有一天會到來!

《浪漫的煎熬》 梁悟心 我花了很多的時間,嘗試去改變現在我生命中發生的一切。為什麼我總是過分的被過 去的事纏繞著?為什麼我總是沒有很開心?到底是因為我有太多的煩擾,還是我本身擁 有一個就愛胡思亂想的自虐體質?我要變得開心, 我是這樣跟自己說的。 那就改變一下生活習慣吧,這個意念就這樣彈出我的腦袋。 他們說晚睡是慢性自殺,我知道,但是就算我多努力仍然是在睡不著,我沒轍叫不停 腦袋不要再打擾,畢竟它不像電腦有開關按鈕可以隨時閂掉,什麼也不想,也畢竟它不 是一件外套,隨便把它脫掉擱置床頭燈桌上就可以置諸不理。嗯,所以我每晚都在自殺。 他們說太多的負能量是慢性自殺,我知道,但是我沒有辦法,和你的一切回憶都是好的, 只是現在沒有跟你一起,再美好的回憶也只是創傷,然而我亦沒有辦法把這一切變得正 面,就像是我沒有辦法告訴你我的心事,因為你就是我的心事。嗯,所以我每一刻都在自 殺。 他們說長期待在室內沒有運動是慢性自殺,這個我或許可以改,然後我決定了去跑 步。比起騎單車,我更想跑步,依舊的沒有目的地兜圈,但那種所有血液都流到腿部,然 後令到頭昏昏的感覺很好,就這樣的一直跑,一直跑,連牙肉都開始發麻也不要停下, 嗯,很好,我再沒有多餘精力去想任何事情。 之後的三個禮拜,我繼續這樣每晚的跑著。 有沒有過那種慢慢在海灣看著浪潮,一波又一波的打上崖邊,然後開始覺得自己已經 明白了世間的一切?沒有?其實也沒差,我就在這種重覆的常規中繼續生活,直到去到一 個關口,我發現,我仍然沒有很開心。 是的,我沒有空去想什麼事情,但我也沒有很開心。 然後我更討厭這種感覺,我已經我一切把可以做的都做了,去到我以為可以回到一切 安好的感覺時,麻醉劑就用完了。我的生活就像那該死的電腦,不斷當機,不斷重啟,然 後以為可以順暢的用一會兒,又當機了,設定重啟,我又回到最初迷失的路口。每每以為 自己可以爬到光明處,才發現又跌回蕭瑟處。 管他的,我是在自殺。 時至今日,其實我已經沒有再去嘗試打理自己的思緒,到底為從前失去初心而心灰,
