n several major cities across the country, art has become a staple of the economy. Communities such as these have learned to embrace the creative and the eccentric in ways that boost the quality of life for local artists and residents while simultaneously enhancing visitors’ vacation experience. A new project on South Padre Island, the Art Business Incubator, strives to support the growth of art culture in our community in a sustainable way by providing a

comfortable and supportive learning environment for emerging local artists. The Art Business Incubator on South Padre Island (ABISPI) has been an idea in the making for years and has only recently manifested itself into physical form last year. This project’s mission is easier said than done but has implications that could benefit South Padre Island’s local community exponentially for generations.
ABISPI (pronounced “abbey,” SPI) sets out to “incubate” artists who have the desire to own and operate their own art-related business on South Padre Island. Every year, up to five artists are accepted into the ABISPI program. During this time, these emerging art-related entrepreneurs are granted access to their own studio space and gallery space, along with many other invaluable resources. These offerings are intended to lower the barriers to success and cushion the risks of early-stage business development as they test their product out in the market for the first time.
A program like this has never been attempted
The Incubator was created to nurture and establish a sufficient mass of art-related businesses to effectively market South Padre Island as a beach destination that is also an arts destination. As a non-profit, this project intends to build upon existing art businesses already present in our community. By bringing more awareness to the local arts, the city hopes to increase visiting patrons for all art-related businesses on South Padre Island. There is a growing abundance of artists in the Rio Grande Valley, and SPI is excited to contribute to the effort to grow the art community.

on SPI. The first committee of planners gained inspiration from various incubators across the United States, many of which were located in big cities such as New York and Chicago. By translating the idea of an incubator and suiting it for the beach town, ABISPI reached a level of innovativeness that has inspired others in the area. ABISPI intends to maintain community involvement by hosting events, classes, workshops, and mentorships. While ABISPI does sell art as a gallery, it is essential to reiterate that purpose is to boost the number of artists and art enthusiasts on the island. The open floor plan allows visitors to interact with the artists one-on-one, and even view works in progress. The headquarters provides a space for gallery and studio, while also acting as an information hub and promotion center for other art-related businesses in our community. ABISPI invites you to come to explore the constantly-changing inventory of original artworks and meet the artists themselves.

NOW YOU KNOW!
IT’S THE LAW
Ties in South Padre? Knot on your life!
Welcome to South Padre, where wearing a tie isn’t just frowned upon it’s actually banned. Declaring that ties are “detrimental to the welfare of the island,” the City Council officially decreed in 1997 that they be “banished from our land and waters forever.” Anyone caught sporting the offending neckwear risks having it snipped off—and being fined the amount of one tie. This is all in good fun, of course—the “no-tie” ordinance has yet to be enforced—but it’s in keeping with the island’s laid-back, informal atmosphere. In a place where relaxation is encouraged, and flip-flops and shorts are considered formal wear, there’s simply no need for buttoned-up business attire. So skip the tie—and the socks while you’re at it—and embrace the casual local lifestyle. After all, who needs reminding of the daily grind when you’re on island time?

or the thrill of deep sea fishing far offshore. An added bonus is the temperate climate, which means you can hit the water with a rod and reel all year round. More than 600 variety of species can be found in the Gulf of Mexico,
making it a top spot for both offshore fishing and deep sea fishing. Depending on the season, you can snag grouper, snapper, wahoo, kingfish, barracuda, tarpon, blue marlin, Mahi Mahi, Spanish mackerel, tuna, and even sharks.
Depending on the season, you can snag grouper, snapper, wahoo, kingfish, barracuda, tarpon, blue marlin, Mahi Mahi, Spanish mackerel, tuna, and even sharks. In the calmer, shallower bay waters of the Laguna Madre, expect to reel in sand trout and whiting, as well as flounder, redfish, black drum, and sheepshead. Whether you’re a first-timer looking for a fun day out on the water, or a seasoned angler after serious sportfishing, it’s worth having a knowledgeable guide. Whatever type of charter you’re booking, experienced crew know the ins and outs of area waters and have a game plan for every species. South Padre fishing charters can provide an adrenaline-filled offshore trip, with hard-pulling gamefish that challenge even the most skilled anglers. For an easy, family-friendly outing,
consider bay fishing or a nearshore charter—you’ll experience all the joy of reeling in a fish, but in much calmer waters. Choose from half-day or full-day trips or private charters. Most boats come equipped with the latest in navigation, fish-finding sonar, and safety gear. Usually you’ll be provided all the necessary bait and tackle, and fish-cleaning service is often available for an additional fee. Be sure to contact the charter company in advance to determine the type of fishing license you will need. Whatever kind of fishing adventure you’re after, you’ll find it in South Padre.

Sea Turtle Inc.
L
ong before there were spring breakers on South Padre, there were sea turtles. Five of the ancient species call the Gulf of Mexico home, including loggerheads, leatherbacks, and hawksbills. Many come to island’s shores to build their nests each season; in fact, the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nests here more than at any other location in the United States.
But the marine turtle’s life is a precarious one. From natural sea predators to negative impact by humans—including boat propellers and ingestion or entanglement in plastic—injured turtles are often spotted along the Texas Coast. For over four decades, Sea Turtle, Inc. has assisted in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of these

Each year, thousands of visitors flock to Sea Turtle, Inc. for the opportunity to interact with these remarkable reptiles. Inside its education and research facilities, connected by a 500-foot boardwalk over a saltwater lagoon, guests can observe turtles up close, attend daily “Turtle Talks” and feedings, and learn all about these fascinating creatures.

Smaller pools hold rehabilitating patients; while larger tanks are home to non-releasable sea turtles—those deemed too injured to live in the wild.
TURTLES REHABILITATED & RELEASED
Among the permanent residents is Allison, a 140-pound Green Sea turtle who in 2009 was fitted with a prosthetic back flipper—one of the first successful turtle prothesis in the world. Not only did this allow her to swim normally, it also made her famous, earning Allison appearances on The Today Show, the Discovery Channel, and in the pages of People magazine.

ith easy access to water wherever you are, South Padre is known as a top destination for watersports. Whether you’re looking for a wild ride on a wave runner, an action-packed day of kiteboarding, or a tranquil paddle in a kayak, there are countless ways to enjoy the area waters. Rental companies all across the island make it easy, offering rentals as well as lessons for a whole host of different watersports. Here are a few to try out on your visit. Have a need for speed? There’s nothing quite like zipping across the water on an ultra-light, super-fast wave runner. Ride solo or bring a friend or two to ride along. You’ll be zooming around Laguna Madre Bay in large, wide riding areas safe from boat traffic—the ideal place to finesse your turns and carves. The calm, shallow waters of Laguna Madre Bay are ideal for kayaking—and you’re sure to spot all kinds of interesting marine life on your trip. Or combine kayaking with bird-watching on a paddle through the marine estuary of the South Padre Island Birding Center, home to hundreds of species of birds. Another option is the 8-milelong South Bay Paddling Trail, which follows the shores of South Bay. Its tidal flats and mangroves are a resting and wintering habitat for numerous types of migratory birds, and you can spot everything from pelicans to spoonbills. If you’d rather be standing than sitting while paddling, try your hand at stand up paddleboarding. Most rentals and SUP tours take place in the warm, placid waters of Laguna Madre Bay—ideal for beginners—while the Gulf of Mexico offers waves for more experienced riders. Should your taste run to more extreme sports, kiteboarding is as intense as it gets— flying across the water and being lifted into the air with the power of the wind isn’t for the faint of heart. On SPI, the steady, year-round breezes make for ideal conditions for both beginner and pro kiteboarders. Most rentals and lessons are provided in the flatter waters of the bay, but experts can head to the Gulf side for bigger thrills.

HERITAGE
ISLAND HISTORY
One of the first buildings constructed at Tarpon Beach in 1908, (Today’s Isla Blanca Park) the Casino Hotel (AKA the Gulf Side Hotel) was only open for a short period before disaster struck.
A
hurricane coming ashore during the early summer of 1909 forced visitors to evacuate and seek shelter at the Quarantine Station, which was located in the bay near the southern tip of Padre Island. Many fishing boats were capsized or cast ashore, and one of the ferry-boats was missing. The action of the waves demolished dozens of fishing shanties. No lives were lost, and all who wished to leave were brought to the boat docks in Port Isabel. Another storm swept ashore on August 26th, and again a large group of tourists sought shelter in the quarantine station. At Tarpon Beach, every building except the lighthouse and the quarantine station was either heavily damaged or destroyed. Most of the destruction was caused by the high waves and a general inundation of the Island. The wind itself, which
34

barely reached tropical storm status, caused little damage. Repairs took several months, but by 1910, Tarpon Beach and the Casino Hotel were once again open to the public. Over the next 15 years, several violent Gulf storms damaged or destroyed much of Tarpon Beach, including the Casino Hotel. During this period, the only Island hotel consistently open was the Tarpon Beach Hotel, located bayside and built-in 1908 by Jesus Vega of Brownsville. In 1926, James A. Dickinson rebuilt the Casino, complete with a water toboggan slide and two fast speedboats to transport passengers to and from the Island. A bus met every boat upon its arrival to take all passengers to the hotel. There was even a lifeguard stationed on the beach when people were in the water.

Compliments of the future Historical Museum of South Padre Island
Business was brisk over the next few years, and though the great depression cast a pall on most of the country, the Casino continued its operation. But we who live on the Island know we are always just one hurricane away from utter destruction as illustrated by the following article published in the July 6th, 1933 edition of the Brownsville Herald: “PORT ISABEL, 3:45 p.m., the afternoon wind at Port Isabel was increasing slightly and has changed a little toward the east. Otherwise, the situation remained unchanged from this morning. Three people from the Padre Island Casino were all at the coastguard station on Padre Island when their telephone line went out. Several more hurricanes struck the Island during the summer-fall of 1933, doing much damage to Tarpon Beach structures. Though heavily damaged, the Casino was repaired and back in business in time to host a gathering of the Port Isabel Rotary Club. In addition to a meal, the group of 25 Rotarians enjoyed watching a coastguard drill put on by the members of the station on Padre Island.” In March of 1942, a pair of Memphis tourists visiting Brazos Island decided they’d like to have lunch at the Casino Hotel. Donning swimsuits, the
WWW.SOCIALIFERGV.COM
pair entered the water and swam the Brownsville ship channel. After a meal, the two repeated their epic swim arriving at Brazos half an hour later. In a January 14th, 1945 article, Frank Dobie wrote: “A Gulf storm took the top story off the Padre Island Hotel. Winds have swept the sand out from under it. No deserted bunk-house ever looked more dilapidated; yet it has more ancient signs about “cover charges,” “cashier,” “family meals with all the trimmings,” “European plan,” “American plan,” “laundry,” etc. than the Waldorf Astoria. You can sit in one of the two old rope bottomed chairs on the wide front gallery and look over the Gulf, listen to the surf break, watch for a fishing sail and feel your consciousness absorbed into the eternity of the universe. The noiseless tooth of time continued her meal, and the old Casino faded into obscurity. Sometime in the early 1950s, it was demolished, and today there is no visible evidence of its existence on Padre Island. For additional Museum, information contact Dennis Franke at 956-572-0608

Located 13 miles north of the South Padre Island jetties, the massive artificial reef system covers some 1,650 acres of the seafloor. Begun in 2016 with the sinking of two 70-foot boats, it has been built out over the years using a number of different concrete structures.

staggering amount of concrete, including 600 tons of concrete roof tiles, 67,000 cinder blocks, 210 eight-foot and 39,200,000 lbs of donated recycled concrete, primarily concrete railroad ties from the BNSF Railroad. The variety of materials creates high, medium, and low relief, with lots of nooks and crannies for fish to hide. This provides young fish with ample protection from predators as they mature, allowing them to survive and thrive as they reach adulthood.

“We have built the first industrial-scale nursery reef in the world. It carries around 240,000 babies every year. If you want lots of fish, it’s easiest to grow them by reducing their sky-high juvenile mortality rate by restoring lost nursery habitat.” - Gary Glick, the president of the Friends of Rio Grande Valley Reef
“We have built the first industrial-scale nursery reef in the world. It carries around 240,000 babies every year. If you want lots of fish, it’s easiest to grow them by reducing their sky-high juvenile mortality rate by restoring lost nursery habitat. Monoculture reefs built with identical size large structures attract fish grown elsewhere,” explained Gary Glick, the president of the Friends of Rio Grande Valley Reef. “The problem is, elsewhere is already short of fish. We wanted to put fish back in the Gulf. It was a UTRGV Marine Biologist, Dr. Richard Kline, who showed us the nursery reef linkages. We can only take credit for recognizing a good idea when we see one. We were also lucky to recruit another of our boyhood charter boat captain friends, Daniel Bryant from Breakaway Cruises, who also has industrial dockside experience. Without him, the logistic side of moving millions of tons of material would have blown up in our faces many times.”
While the original goal was to grow the red snapper population to provide increased fishing opportunities and preserve the area’s fishing heritage, the reef has also benefited other marine life. Underwater footage shows that sharks, amberjack, grouper, and several species of threatened and endangered turtles, notably Kemp’s ridleys, use the reef for both protection and as a source for food. The Friends of Rio Grande Valley Reef is a nonprofit, relying on donations and volunteers to achieve their goal of creating this beneficial marine habitat. It also works with a number of different area organizations and companies including the City of South Padre Island, Foremost Paving, South Point Marine, Texas International Fishing Tournament, and the marine science department at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

or the first time, North American river otters are being exhibited at the Gladys Porter Zoo, and its staff could not be more excited to welcome these playful creatures! Otters are very social and often live in large family groups with mom, dad, and siblings. A large part of their day, when not foraging for food, is spent playing. Three-year-old Imnaha and Tallulah are sisters from the same litter. Their names come from rivers in North America. Their keepers here often shorten their names to Imi and Lulu. Just like human sisters, they have their unique personalities. Imi is the more confident otter -- she is very curious about new things and not afraid

to try new enrichment items or foods. She also likes to vocalize to her keepers. On the other hand, Lulu is a more reserved and careful otter. She lets her sister investigate new things first, and once she is sure that she is safe, she will join in. Lulu also loves a good nap! Imi and Lulu are currently living in their new fun-filled exhibit, which they love. They are darting in their big new pool and resting and playing in their sunny grassy areas, and we can’t wait till they fully adjust to their new habitat and are slipping down their water slides. Carry in, carry out Trash on the beach is not fun!
Space invasion Too close for comfort!
Making sure you leave the beach as clean as you found it seems like a no-brainer, but it’s not. We’ve all seen people who could easily walk over to a garbage can throw their trash in the sand, but don’t for some reason.
We all have experienced it. You got up early to get the perfect spot on the beach, near the water, but far enough you don’t get splashed. Your perfect beach spot is just far enough from those around so that you do not bother each other. It’s perfect.
It’s not only gross and unsanitary, it can be dangerous. People are walking around the beach with bare feet where things like glass and plastic are easily stepped on. Please make sure that whatever you take to the beach, you take back with you when you leave.
Until a crowd of people come and place their set-up a few inches away from your own. They are close and set up right between you and the water. It’s enough to ruin a day. Please make sure that you respect other visitors’ space. Allow for at least 6 feet between you and those around you and be mindful of not blocking someone else’s view of the water.
Tone it down! Music too loud! Many people go to the beach to enjoy the view and listen to the beach. There is nothing more frustrating than for others on the beach playing their music loudly. Please be mindful of the volume of your music or, better yet, turn the music off and enjoy the sounds of the waves.
