SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM CLINICSNEW LOCATIONS
AND EXPANDED
SERVICES
A Commitment to Providing Quality Care at Close-to-Home Locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley
TheSouth Texas region is home to an estimated 2.4 million people, with Hidalgo County accounting for more than 35% of that number.* As the Rio Grande Valley continues to grow, South Texas Health System Clinics is working harder than ever to meet the healthcare needs of Valley residents.
As they expand their reach across the region, patients within the communities they serve have gained greater access to quality care from skilled teams of physicians, therapists, and support staff - right in their own neighborhoods.
New Locations Throughout the Rio Grande Valley
To keep healthcare accessible throughout the region, South Texas Health System Clinics has recently launched several new practices, each offering family medicine services and outpatient rehabilitation. These new locations include:
• 4200 Tres Lagos Blvd. | Suites 140 & 160 | McAllen, TX 78504
• 300 E. Mile 3 Road | Suites 170 & 190 | Palmhurst, TX 78573
• 7900 N. 10th St. | Suite A | McAllen, TX 78504
Services available at each of these locations include the following:
Family Medical Care
At their family medicine clinics, you’ll find clinicians whose number one priority is helping to keep you and your family healthy. They provide comprehensive healthcare services for children, adults, and elderly patients. Their focus is on helping to prevent disease and promote long-term health.
Because many of today’s health concerns have a preventive component, being proactive about your health and keeping up with routine screenings is an important way to detect disease early and increase your chances of recovery.
In addition to providing preventive medicine and recommended screenings, other available services include annual wellness visits, pediatric care, physicals (sports, general, and DOT), chronic disease management, smoking cessation, and follow-up care after a hospital visit.
Outpatient Rehabilitation Services
At each of these recently opened clinics, you’ll also find advanced therapy options to help restore function and improve quality of life. Available services include:
• Physical Therapy: Physical therapists can help improve strength, flexibility and balance, reduce pain, and decrease fall risk. The goal of the therapist is to maximize functional mobility.
• Occupational Therapy: Occupational therapists help teach the skills you need to care for yourself, with the goal of improving your independence following surgery, illness, fracture, or other condition or event.
• Speech Therapy: Speech-language pathologists can help you improve your communication, cognition, and/or swallowing abilities through an individualized treatment plan.
Bringing Specialty Care Closer with Expanded Services
In addition to family medicine and outpatient rehabilitation services, South Texas Health System Clinics offer specialized care in the following areas at locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley:
• Behavioral Health

Providing Care for Children with Kidney Conditions
Nephrology is a subspecialty of internal and pediatric medicine. In the past, nephrology care could be difficult to find, therefore, more difficult to access, which left many people without convenient options. South Texas Health System Clinics is helping to close that gap. They now offer pediatric nephrology services at the following recently opened location:
800 E. Dove Ave. | Suite A | McAllen, TX 78504
At this location, Dr. Siddique, a board-certified physician with expertise in both pediatric nephrology and hypertension, helps to diagnose and treat children with a variety of problems, including kidney disorders, body chemistry disorders, and structural abnormalities of the kidneys.

Friends gathered at Quinta Mazatlan to celebrate 17 years of supporting Education, Ecotourism, and the Environment for the health of all. Guests honored Dr. Guy Bailey, President of UTRGV, for advancing the educational goals of the Center. Sally Guerra and Team orchestrated a beautiful night featuring Susys Dance, Paella Night by Kokos, Guitar by Mario Aleman, UTRGV Ballet Español Dance, and the Ache de Barrio Band. A highlight was the presentation by Sam Houston students as they spoke of the power of Tiny Forests. Guests took their message to heart and generously donated funds to grow a Tiny Forest at their school. Way to go, HOUSTON!

The Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Center at South Texas Health System® Heart Helps Put Patients on a Healthier Path
If you or a loved one has turned to numerous diets, medications, and weight-loss programs without long-term success, the Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Center at South Texas Health System Heart offers hope and support for a healthier lifestyle.
“It Was Like a Miracle for Me” - Rachel Rodriguez
More than a decade ago, Rachel Rodriguez began a weight-loss journey that transformed her life. “I was extremely overweight, and I just didn’t have any energy,” the busy mother of five (and now grandmother of three) says about her decision to have weight-loss surgery. “I didn’t feel happy with myself, and I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do with my children.” Rodriguez had also been diagnosed with diabetes, which was another incentive to change.
She attended a weight-loss seminar and knew that surgery was the next step for her. After several months of preparation, she had her procedure in December 2012.
Today, more than ten years later, Rodriguez is almost 90 pounds lighter and feels healthier than ever.
“It Was Time to Prioritize My Health
After years of yo-yo dieting, Mayra Reyes began a weight-loss journey that changed her life.
When this 30-something mother of two was diagnosed with hypertension, Mayra Reyes knew it was time to make a real change. “It was just very bad – my blood pressure was rising and rising,” she says. “I wanted to lead a healthier life so that I could be more active with my girls.”
After meeting with physicians at the South Texas Health System Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Center, Reyes underwent gastric bypass surgery in March 2021.
Today, Reyes is 100 pounds lighter. “Now I look forward to taking my girls to the park or to the pool,” the young mother adds. “I can take them wherever they want to go.”
While Reyes is proud of the progress she’s made by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, she credits the staff at the South Texas Health System Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Center for helping to make it all possible.
“I want to live a long life,” she says. “I have five beautiful daughters and three grandchildren, and I want to have the energy to enjoy them.”
A Team Dedicated to Your Success
The Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Center team is staffed by board-certified physicians, certified bariatric nurses, a registered dietitian, and physical therapists, all dedicated to helping you not only achieve your weight-loss goals but also maintain them throughout your life. Working with you every step of the way, the team helps create a customized plan to put you on the road to success. Of course, your part requires a lifelong commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle anchored by a strong support system.
Treatment Options Designed to Fit Your Needs
During weight-loss surgery, specially trained and highly skilled surgeons reduce the size of the stomach either solely by, or in combination with, rerouting the small intestine. Both techniques can help decrease appetite. Options include:

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
During laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon creates a small pouch from the top section of the stomach, then attaches it to the small intestine. In effect, the procedure restricts the amount of food you can eat and absorb, which will help you lose weight.
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
During a sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon permanently removes about 60 to 80 percent of the stomach. The part of the stomach that remains is connected to the esophagus and small intestine, forming the shape of a sleeve. This procedure offers an alternative for those who are at a high risk with gastric bypass surgery or those who want to avoid having artificial items in their body.
A Fully Accredited Bariatric Program
Revision Surgery
Revision surgery can help those who previously had a bariatric procedure but did not lose weight as quickly as expected or who have regained weight. Revision surgery can be used to correct the original procedure or to convert the existing surgery into another treatment option.
OverStitch™ Revision Procedure
People who have had weight-loss surgery but are still struggling with weight gain have a new option with the OverStitch Endoscopic Suturing System. Sometimes, the opening into the stomach gradually expands after surgery. As it expands, people who have had weightloss surgery may feel less full and begin eating larger portions of food. The OverStitch procedure decreases the size of the opening into the stomach so it returns to the previous form after the original surgery.
The Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Program at South Texas Health System Heart has been fully accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) with Adolescent Designation. This national recognition speaks to the high level of care the staff provides to our bariatric patients, as well as the hospital’s dedication to patient safety and results.

On a sunny Saturday, April 22, the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District (ECISD) successfully hosted its 13th Annual Edinburg CISD Scholarship Golf Tournament at the scenic Los Lagos Golf Club. It was a hallmark event with an unprecedented level of participation and community engagement, making it one of their most successful tournaments to date.
In this collaborative endeavor, numerous local business partners from across the Rio Grande Valley joined hands with ECISD, contributing both financial sponsorship and a spirit of unity and collective goodwill. The primary objective of this golf tournament, beyond the sport and fellowship, was to generate funds to be channeled directly into scholarships for graduating seniors. The raising of over $100,000 in this year’s event signifies a crucial step forward in alleviating the financial burden that higher education can place on students and their families.

“Our growth is explosive, and when you look at what’s coming, like Division 1 collegiate football, the Arts, Culture, and Events (ACE) Center, and state-of-the-art medical facilities, Edinburg is the educational, cultural, and healthcare hub of the Valley,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said at the State of the City Address. “We have all the key ingredients in Edinburg–solid infrastructure, better roads and drainage, booming growth, and open land to grow.”
Among all U.S. cities with 100,000 or more residents, Edinburg is the fastest-growing city in South Texas, 5th fastest in the state, and the 12th fastest-growing in the nation. To keep up with this expansive growth, in 2022, Edinburg made a total capital investment of $264.8 million, which resulted in an economic impact of $730.5
million and 2,018 new jobs created. In addition, $98 million was invested in improvements throughout Edinburg, which include street upgrades, park and trail improvements, public facilities, and drainage improvements. Further, more than 9,000 building permits were issued, which resulted in $301 million in construction activity.

And that growth doesn’t show any signs of slowing. The three-time All-America City is hitting another landmark in its growth story, with construction activity in the city skyrocketing to a formidable $57 million for April alone. This figure reflects a blend of residential and commercial ventures, with residential projects attracting $18 million and commercial initiatives garnering an outstanding $39 million.
A comparison of year-to-date figures demonstrates this spectacular rise in new construction activity. As of April 30, 2023, the cumulative value of new construction projects has soared to a notable $164.5 million, markedly outstripping the $56 million recorded during the equivalent period in 2022.
This upward trend in construction activity testifies to the city’s dynamic growth and the solid economic health of the region. This latest construction report underlines a notable uptick in new undertakings and investments, bolstering Edinburg’s reputation as a favored destination for development and expansion.
We’re excited about the remarkable expansion of our construction sector. These unprecedented figures show the strength of our economy, the welcoming nature of our business environment, and the enormous potential in our city,” expressed Mayor Garza.
The significant upswing in residential construction activity reinforces Edinburg’s dedication to addressing the housing requirements of its burgeoning population. The $18 million pumped into residential projects signifies the city’s commitment to fostering vibrant neighborhoods and providing its residents with modern, comfortable living spaces.

“We are steadfast in our commitment to promote further growth and development, guaranteeing our residents and businesses premier opportunities for success.”
TheCity of Edinburg continues to stay focused on nurturing strategic partnerships, stimulating economic growth, and elevating its residents’ overall quality of life. Through sustained investment in key sectors such as construction, the city is determined to cement its position as a regional frontrunner and an appealing place to live, work, and invest.
The booming construction activity, amassing a remarkable $39 million, underscores Edinburg’s emergence as a significant business hub. Building permits pulled by UTRGV and Edinburg CISD for the Collegiate High School and improvements at the South Texas International Airport in Edinburg have contributed to this commercial surge. With top-notch facilities and a vibrant business environment, Edinburg presents an attractive setting for businesses to flourish and expand.
Adding to this upward momentum, Edinburg is experiencing a boom

in new business activity as it has successfully attracted an impressive array of national chain businesses. Brands including 7 Brew, Scooter’s Coffee, Pedro’s Tacos & Tequila Bar, Dunkin, Cinnaholic Gourmet Cinnamon Rolls, and Dave’s Hot Chicken have recently applied for building permits, marking their presence in Edinburg. This wave corresponds to a notable cumulative investment of $5.1 million, reinforcing Edinburg’s evolving stature as an economic powerhouse.
Edinburg’s allure for these businesses highlights the city’s businessfriendly environment and potential to become a significant economic development hub. “Edinburg’s ability to draw a spectrum of industries and the recent interest from well-established brands underscore the city’s sustained growth,” Mayor Garza commented.

residents with its iconic offerings, including its famous donuts and delectable breakfast sandwiches. Moreover, Dave’s Hot Chicken, a fastgrowing sensation recognized for its Nashville-style hot chicken, has chosen Edinburg as its newest location, catering to the city’s appetite for bold and flavorful cuisine.
“These projects will not only create job opportunities but will also enhance the city’s tax base, contribute to infrastructure development, and foster overall economic vibrancy,” stated Mayor Garza.

ETIQUESTIONS

I loved watching the recent coronation of the King! I love the pageantry and how graceful everyone looked. Specifically, how the royals sit. What is royal etiquette about sitting?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230531154259-8aa23d1f615bf60e8180d3c92dae4842/v1/6efffa1732484446e63c19bc1f9e4bcd.jpeg)
Graceful indeed! When it comes to sitting, the royals believe that legs and knees should always be together, so they will never sit with their legs crossed at the knees. Instead, consider keeping the knees and ankles tightly together and slanting the legs to the side. It keeps the posture modest and makes the legs appear longer.
The women in the royal family surely dress beautifully and gracefully. One of the secrets is that they cover up cleavage. If you notice, most of the dresses worn by the royal women have high necklines or modest cuts. There were even reports that Princess Diana would always carry her purse to her chest when exiting cars so as to cover up any cleavage that may arise while moving about.
I bet that dining etiquette for the royals is complicated! What is the one royal table rule that the rest of us commoners should also follow?
What a great question! When the royals are dining at the table and need to leave the table for a minute, they leave without making much of a fuss. For example, if a royal family member or guest needs to be excused from the table for a restroom break, they simply say, “Excuse me,” and leave. If they are not done eating, they cross the utensils so that the wait staff knows not to take the plate, and they quietly leave the table. It is all done discreetly and quietly.

I have always wondered about the royal family’s rules on attire. I notice the women are always dressed beautifully and conservatively. What is their secret?

NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT
Community HOPE Projects Inc, doing business as Hope Family Health Center, is a 501(C)3 not for profit organization providing primary medical, counseling, integrated behavioral health, peer support services, case management, and wellness programs to the uninsured living in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.
In 1994, a group of individuals including David Saavedra, LCSW, Sister Marian Strohmeyer and Anna W. Cass, Parish Associate at Holy Spirit, had the idea to provide medical and counseling services to the families who did not have access to any resources such as Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance.
The interest sparked as Father Gerald Frank arranged the three to meet and begin to unfold their ideas.
Through extensive conversations, outreaching and community efforts, The Family Health & Resource Center (FHRC) was created and Community HOPE Projects, Inc was incorporated in 1995 and received its status in 1997.

The group began recruiting volunteer physicians and therapists to provide donated care to the uninsured for a minimal donation and patients were seen out of a medical office in downtown McAllen. To this day, all physicians are volunteers who donate their time to provide healthcare to those in need and the counseling and support staff are grant funded licensed professionals with a shared mission to provide
healthcare to those who do not have access to resources such as insurance.
On Wednesday, January 3, 2001, the Family Health Resource Center opened its doors at 2332 Jordan Rd., McAllen, TX to a new 12,000 + sq ft. integrated health center.

Lloyd M. and Elmer C. Bentsen, famous land developers in Hidalgo County, were two of six children of Peter and Tina Bentsen.
Born in South Dakota, the Bentsens were a family of farmers that immigrated from Denmark. Lloyd Millard was born Nov. 24, 1893, and Elmer Carolus was born Jan. 15, 1897. The brothers lived on the family farm until enlisting in the military at the beginning of World War I. Their parents moved south to the Rio Grande Valley in 1918 in hopes that the new climate would alleviate some of Peter Bentsen’s health issues.
They rented acres of land from John Shary and soon became land agents themselves. The Bentsens invested in land and developed new ways to sell land. Land excursions were popular during the 1920s and 1930s, and the Bentsens played a role in developing those excursions. One of their land agents was John Thomas Cross.
After purchasing land from the Bentsens, Cross began to sell land to others as well. He was resourceful and, eventually, purchased the main grove and clubhouse from the Bentsens.
The Bentsen desk was present during all the transactions made by the Bentsens and Cross. It was where land agreements and sales were made. Jane Cross, daughter of John Cross, donated the desk to the Museum of South Texas History.

Jackson Organ
Four years before the American Civil War, Nathaniel Jackson and Matilda Hicks, along with 11 others, made their way from Alabama to the Rio Grande Valley. As a mixed-race couple, a white man and a just-freed black woman, they were looking for a new start to life away from slavery and persecution. The journey took more than two months. Their original destination may have been Mexico, where slavery had been abolished in 1829, but they settled before crossing the border. The Jacksons purchased part of the Narciso Cavazos land grant, Porción no. 71, from E.D. Smith., which is now part of present-day Pharr and San Juan.

After the American Civil War, the family built a small church of adobe and logs with a roof of palm fronds. Repeated flooding from the river damaged the structure. After years of rebuilding, a wooden church was built in its place and named La Iglesia de los Jacksons Cerca de El Capote. In 1884, Martin Jackson deeded the 1/5-acre plot of land on which the church sat to the Methodist Episcopal Church. Circuit pastors came through as they visited other communities until Reverend Matilde Treviño moved to South Texas and became the first Protestant pastor who served the congregation on a full-time basis.
Vela Bed
A mid-19th century bed, also known as a Jenny Lind bed, belonged to Gregoria, who was part of the Vela family from Hidalgo County. She later gifted it to her nephew, Rafael Vela.

Though first living on La Esperanza Ranch, where he raised livestock, Rafael Vela owned a ranch named Rancho de la Gancha. Later, he traded it with the McAllen family for a ranch closer to his mother and sisters. He named this ranch El Desierto. Many family members are buried there today. The Salvador and Leonor Vela descendants have grown to several thousand family members.
Rafael’s daughter, Eva Vela Murphy, graciously donated the historic bed to the museum.

LOOKING FOR A LOVING HOME
SHELTER OF THE MONTHPalm Valley Animal Society
Palm Valley Animal Society (PVAS) is the largest animal shelter in the Rio Grande Valley, taking in more than 15,000 pets every year. PVAS currently contracts with five cities and Hidalgo County at large to provide sheltering services for RGV pets in need. In addition to shelter services, PVAS also has a Pet Resources Center that provides self-supported rehoming, food
and pet supplies, access to virtual behavior training options, and much more to help keep pets out of the shelter and with their families. PVAS is working with its partners to create innovative ways to serve the needs of pets and their people and expand lifesaving shelter practices to have a safe, humane community.
Mister Miyagi PVAS-A-172962
Mister Miyagi suffered an unimaginable fate before arriving at PVAS. Hit by a car and left to suffer, he endured extreme pain and misery for days before he was brought to safety at Palm Valley. Our medical team determined he had a left femoral fracture and desperately needed his hind leg amputated to recover. Thanks to the incredible work of a visiting veterinarian, Mister Miyagi received a lifesaving amputation and is now on the road to recovery. It is progressing as expected, but after all of his recent hardships, Mister Miyagi would much prefer to spend his recovery period with a foster caregiver or adopter who can provide him with unwavering love and support as he prepares for the next phase of his life as a tripod.
Mister Miyagi is a 3-year-old Shepherd mix who is neutered, microchipped, and up-todate on vaccines. He is currently available at our Laurie P. Andrews Center. For more information on adopting, email adopt@pvastx.org. For more information on fostering, email foster@pvastx.org.

Ham PVAS-A-174410
Shot, abandoned in the streets, and left to die was Ham’s tragic fate before he arrived at PVAS. This sweet 2-year-old Shepherd persevered through his suffering for weeks, as most of his wounds had already healed by the time of his arrival. In addition to suffering severe puncture wounds, Ham also had a fractured humerus. His front left limb required amputation. Thanks to the incredible work of a visiting veterinarian, Ham received the lifesaving surgery and is now on the road to recovery. It is progressing as expected, but after all of his recent hardships, Ham would much prefer to spend his recovery period with a foster caregiver or adopter who can provide him with unwavering love and support as he prepares for the next phase of his life as a tripod. Ham is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines. He is currently available at our Laurie P. Andrews Center. For more information on adopting, email adopt@ pvastx.org. VACATIONING WITH YOUR PUP
By Dr. Ruben CastroNext month is the beginning of the summer season, and as the school year comes to an end, many of us have our summer vacation planned. If you decide on taking your dog with you, you’ll want to ensure that the hotel you are staying at is pet-friendly. When I vacationed in Houston last summer, I brought along both my dogs, and let me tell you, I learned a lot of dos and don’ts from what I experienced and what I saw from other dog owners. Here are some helpful tips and etiquette rules to keep in mind, when traveling with your furry companion.
Please ensure that your dog is current on all vaccinations (have digital or paper proof).
Have someone stay with your dog when you arrive so you can check-in and bring down your luggage. During this time, your dog should be walked so he/she can potty and have any pent-up energy drained (this way they don’t get hyper when brought inside the hotel and annoy guests).
Bring your dog’s bed/kennel so they are comfortable and won’t be barking when left alone.
If your dog is not friendly, please ensure they are wearing a muzzle.
During your stay, when dogs are taken out for a potty break, they should be taken on a short leash so they are near their handler (this also prevents them from brushing up against other guests in the halls, especially in the elevator).

If your dog gets rowdy or hyper when he/she sees other people or dogs, do not walk him/her near any eating establishments, swimming areas, or exercise areas.
It is a good idea to locate the quickest route outside (maybe a side door) to enter and exit and not bother guests.
If your dog is not friendly, it should have a shirt/vest or some type of signage that says ‘IN TRAINING, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH!’, that way people know not to approach.
When your dog is going to be left alone in the room, it would be a good idea to leave the TV on for them (not too loud) so that the noise outside the hotel room is drowned out and the dogs won’t be constantly listening and waiting for you to return, which minimizes anxiety.
Anytime you are traveling with your dog, you should make regular stops so that it can have a potty break, which also gives them a chance to stretch out their legs. For example, a trip from the RGV to San Antonio typically takes about 3.5-4 hours but should take longer as there should be at least one or two potty breaks along the way.
Before going on your trip, ensure your dog is well-groomed and bring the necessary doggy bag. The bag should contain feeding and drinking bowls, food, treats, a gallon of water, potty bags, brushes, doggy wipes, a roll of paper towels, a spray cleaner to clean up any accidents, and any medication your dog may be taking.
I stay at the Embassy Suites or a Marriott property when I bring my dogs on vacation. According to nerdwallet.com, IHG, Marriott, and Hilton offer the best overall stays for people with dogs.
Remember, always do your research when booking a room, as hotels often update their policies for pets.
