A CLOSER LOOK AT THE HEART The Cardiac Cath Lab’s advanced imaging techniques, specialized catheters, and cardiac catheterization services provide physicians at South Texas Health System® Edinburg with valuable insights into the functioning of the heart and its associated blood vessels.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cardiologists and other specialists at South Texas Health System Edinburg provide a wide range of services for diagnosing and treating heart conditions. Whether you have been diagnosed with heart disease or have a family history of it, you can count on the dedicated physicians and staff at South Texas Health System Edinburg to provide the care you need to help you heal and stay healthy. Our Cardiac Cath Lab services include:
Cardiac Catheterizations During cardiac catheterizations, a long, thin tube, called a catheter, is inserted into an artery and threaded through blood vessels to the heart, allowing the physician to get a closer “look” at the heart. The diagnostic cardiac catheterization capabilities at South Texas Health System Edinburg play a vital role in helping the cardiology team evaluate patients with suspected or known heart disease. When a patient is experiencing symptoms of a cardiac condition, a wide range of diagnostic tools can be used, including X-rays, echocardiograms, and exercise tests. Sometimes, however, a closer look is needed. That’s when diagnostic cardiac catheterization tools become essential. By providing physicians with an actual view within arteries of interest, they are able to see things like blockages and other abnormalities that may be impeding the flow of blood to the heart. Having these diagnostic capabilities within South Texas Health System Edinburg is an important tool in the facility’s cardiology services.

Dr. René Gutiérrez and McAllen ISD Making History By Dr. Kimberly Selber
F
or the first time in its 118-year history, one of its alums will fill the top job at McAllen ISD. Dr. René Gutiérrez, has come home. At age eight, René Gutiérrez relocated from Reynosa, Mexico, to McAllen, Texas. With Spanish as his first language, he went through the McAllen ISD (MISD) bilingual program in elementary school to become proficient in English. “I had great teachers in elementary, middle, and high school who helped me along the way,” Gutiérrez reflects. “I still see that here in McAllen ISD. I see how much the teachers care and how hard they work.” With the encouragement of his teachers, Gutiérrez graduated from McAllen High School in 1983 and earned both a Master of Education and a doctorate in educational leadership from The University of Texas-Pan American. His dissertation focused on the academic achievement of Mexican-origin immigrant high school students. Beginning his educational career as a math teacher in La Joya ISD in 1987, Gutiérrez steadily rose through the academic ranks. By 2009, he was appointed Superintendent of Edinburg ISD and Brownsville ISD in 2019. As a superintendent, Dr. Gutiérrez wasted no time making a profound impact. He implemented strategic initiatives and spearheaded programs to enhance every facet of education within the school district. His passion shone brightest in addressing the academic needs of economically disadvantaged students and those for whom English is a second language. Under his visionary leadership, Edinburg CISD and Brownsville ISD achieved “A” ratings based on the new accountability system. His accolades are a testament to his dedication, earning him the title of South Texas - Region One Superintendent of the Year for 2012 (Edinburg CISD) and the 2023 Region One Superintendent of the Year for Brownsville ISD. Furthermore, he was recognized as one of the top five superintendents in Texas in 2012. He received the prestigious Educational Leadership Award from the University Council for Educational Administration at UT-Pan American. “I find it very exciting to return home and see the kids in McAllen, whether they reside on the South or the North side,” Gutiérrez contemplates. “I am a reflection of those kids; I see myself at that age. I recognize the immense opportunities we

can offer them, just as they were once extended to me.” Dr. Guttiérrez takes over the leadership of McAllen ISD with a host of new programs to expand the opportunities for its students. “I’m from here, and I’m for them,” Guttiérrez says passionately. “I want the best for the kids at McAllen ISD.”

THE CENTER FOR URBAN ECOLOGY AT QUINTA MAZATLAN In a world where sustainable practices and ecological awareness are becoming increasingly vital, instilling a love for the environment in younger generations is paramount. The answer? Get them involved in the dirt, quite literally. Enter the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE), a groundbreaking 14-acre research center poised to revolutionize how we teach and learn about our ecosystem. With a staggering budget of $51.9 million, this state-of-the-art facility will be situated at Quinta Mazatlán, a place perfectly poised to promote science and sustainability education. What makes the CUE truly special is the formal partnership it has forged with the McAllen ISD, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Together, they are dedicated to enhancing access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education for students in the area. The CUE will become an extended classroom for McAllen ISD K-12 students, offering an immersive and hands-on experience in biodiversity and much more. Debbie Crane Aliseda, the McAllen ISD Trustee President, expressed gratitude for the City of McAllen’s partnership, highlighting that this project goes beyond education; it symbolizes a collective dedication to offering children tangible opportunities for handson learning.
City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E., emphasized the project’s visionary nature, crediting the leadership of elected officials and the unwavering support of partners like McAllen ISD, UTRGV, and others. The Center for Urban Ecology at Quinta Mazatlán is where young minds will nurture a profound connection with nature and emerge as stewards of our planet’s future. It’s not just about getting your hands dirty; it’s about getting your hands dirty with purpose, passion, and a commitment to sustainability.
SUMMER IN SALAMANCA McAllen ISD is making waves with its extraordinary summer study abroad program, a rarity in the Lone Star State. While many universities offer similar opportunities, McAllen ISD stands out by allowing its high school students to embark on a transformative journey in Salamanca, Spain, while still in their teenage years. The program offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a foreign culture and earn college credit hours. This remarkable feat is made possible during a mini-semester in Salamanca, Spain, a city steeped in history and culture. It’s not just an ordinary summer vacation; it’s a chance to broaden horizons and gain a competitive edge. McAllen ISD’s program is modeled after the study abroad programs typically found at universities. However, what

makes it truly remarkable is that it is tailored to high school students. Participating in this program is about more than just acquiring college credits. It’s also an opportunity for students to bolster their college applications. The experience is a testament to their enthusiasm for learning and willingness to embrace new challenges. Moreover, it fosters leadership skills as students navigate a foreign country, interact with locals, and manage their academic responsibilities independently. Salamanca, often described as the “Golden City” due to its stunning architectural heritage, offers students the chance to explore a different way of life. From savoring Spanish cuisine to strolling through centuries-old cobblestone streets, every moment is a cultural immersion. These encounters with diverse perspectives and traditions are invaluable life lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. For the upcoming summer program in 2024, McAllen ISD has already accepted 20 students. While the rewards are immense, the program does come with a price tag. Approximately 40% of the funding is need-based and generously provided by donors who believe in the power of education and cultural exchange. The students shoulder the remaining cost, a valuable lesson in financial responsibility. Through fundraising efforts, they’re actively involved in covering their travel expenses. This experience instills a sense of determination and financial savvy that will serve them well in the future. McAllen ISD’s summer study abroad program is not just a unique offering; it’s a transformative experience that prepares high school students for a bright future. It’s a testament to the district’s commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities, inspiring students to dream big, and helping them realize their potential.

It is no coincidence that it is also the new home of the UT Health RGV Cancer and Surgery Center, which broke ground in December. The UMCA’s two-story building will be 65,500 square feet and

contain 16 state-of-the-art classrooms plus multiple labs for physics, biology, chemistry, computer science, computer-aided engineering, pre-engineering, and instructional technology. The UMCA plans to enroll 125 students per grade 9 to 12. Its primary mission? To guide students towards becoming “CORE complete” and seamlessly transition them into a four-year degree program at UTRGV or another institution within the UT System. The keyword here is “seamlessly.” This academy is about creating a pathway that minimizes the hurdles between high school and college. The UMCA offers four distinct focus areas: Pre-med, Engineering, Education, and Computer Science. Depending on their chosen career path, students will embark on a tailored curriculum to ensure they’re well-prepared for the journey ahead. For instance, aspiring engineers can expect to tackle advanced mathematics courses necessary for their field of study. One unique aspect of the UMCA is that it’s not a stand-alone campus; it’s a campus within a campus. Students will divide their day between their home high school campuses (McAllen High, Memorial, or Rowe) and the UTRGV campus. During their 11th and 12th-grade years, academy students will attend classes alongside UTRGV professors. This integration allows them to earn dual credits while benefiting from the expertise of higher education professionals. The primary goal of this program is to ensure that students graduate from high school not only with a diploma but also with 42 or more college credit hours under their belts at no cost
to them. Additionally, they gain valuable exposure to one of the four career pathways they select, providing a clear direction for their future. Two cohorts have already been accepted into the UMCA, with students slated to start classes at the new facility in the fall of 2024. The UTRGV-McAllen ISD Collegiate Academy is just one way McAllen ISD enriches the educational experience for its students. With programs like the International Baccalaureate (IB), Career Technical Education (CTE), Dual Enrollment, and Achieve Early College, the district is helping students unlock their full potential, opening doors to exciting futures.

Following in the Footsteps of Our Ancestors By Colleen Hook, Executive Director, Quinta Mazatlan
Quinta Mazatlan has gone through many changes throughout its history. The Matthews, the first family, built an adobe home and welcomed the forest as their backyard. The second family, Marilyn & Frank Schultz, continued the practice of improving the home and habitat for all. Now, the third family, the City of McAllen, is investing significantly in growing the urban sanctuary for environmental education, eco-tourism, and the environment.
The City of McAllen recently broke ground on the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE). The expansion will add 14 additional acres to Quinta Mazatlan and include a transit partnership to provide a public transportation element. “The Center for Urban Ecology at Quinta Mazatlan promises to be a transformative venture, fostering a positive and enriching environment for the local community, students, and residents,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. The City of McAllen leaders expect the CUE to become a nationally recognized destination in the Rio Grande Valley, drawing visitors from around the world—a place where education and tourism intersect. The project inspired a formal partnership in education and

conservation with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and the McAllen Independent School District. “The programming at the CUE will work towards increasing access for students in STEM learning. The CUE will become a premier research lab in urban ecological sciences and its application towards sustainable urban development,” said Quinta Mazatlan Executive Director Colleen Hook. The Center for Urban Ecology will benefit the entire region, generating an economic impact of over $250 million from construction, operations, and visitor spending. “We are pursuing an amazing vision thanks to the leadership of our elected officials and the unwavering support and immense contributions of all our partners, including education and conservation partners; Friends

of Quinta Mazatlan Board of Directors and Staff; and many more towards this exceptional initiative,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “Without these partnerships, the project would not become a reality.” The CUE was designed by Overland Partners, a globally recognized architectural firm for sustainable design based in San Antonio. The children’s adventure garden was designed by an awardwinning landscape architect out of Austin, TenEyck Landscape. The lead architect for the project is Megamorphosis of Harlingen, who has been working in partnership with SpawGlass, also out of Harlingen, to build a premier national facility promoting and teaching the concept of Sustainability. “From the very beginning, the project was designed to be a Sustainable Project, one that supports the People, the Planet, and Profit,” said Hook. “We are excited to showcase the power of youth leadership, the spirit of teamwork, and the tremendous difference we can each make by following in the footsteps of our ancestors to protect the land.” Visit Quinta Mazatlan and enjoy programs, workshops, speakers, concerts in the park, tai chi, yoga, and a stroll through the woods. Quinta Mazatlan is open Tuesday to Saturday, 8 am-5 pm, and Thursday evenings. Follow Quinta Mazatlan on social media for announcements on special events, programs, bird sightings, and more!

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
UNWRAPPING THE TAMALE TRADITION By Dr. Kimberly Selber
When the Christmas holiday season descends upon the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, a beloved tradition takes center stage: the making and devouring of tamales. These delectable parcels of goodness are an integral part of Christmas celebrations in the border region, echoing their deep-rooted significance in Latin American culture. But why do tamales hold such a special place at our tables during Christmas? Let’s unravel the cultural and historical threads that make tamales a cherished tradition.
Aztec Feast. Illustration from the Florentine Codex, late 16th century
A vase from the late classical period of the Mayan Empire shows a tribute (most likely tamales) being made to a king or god
Food for the Gods The story of tamales began thousands of years ago (8,000-5,000 BC) in the ancient civilizations of the Americas, including those of the Mayans, Aztecs, Olmecs, and Toltecs. These ingenious people discovered the art of crafting tamales using maize (corn) as a staple ingredient. Tamales were a protein-rich food that warriors could take on military campaigns. Because of their portability and ease of transport (though extremely labor intensive), some scholars regard them as the pioneers of the “grad-and-go” meal concept. Furthermore, historical records underscore the profound symbolism and the spiritual tether between tamales and the Maya’s divine pantheon. At the core of this pantheon stands the illustrious God of Maize, Hun Hunahpu, who symbolizes the cyclical rhythm of the maize harvest as part of a mythological narrative that tells a story of death and rebirth. For the Maya people, maize represented more than just sustenance; it was the embodiment of life itself. The tamale functioned as a conduit connecting them directly to their God of Maize, bridging the earthly and spiritual realms.

Christianization and Christmas The arrival of Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century brought Christianity to the Americas, and the Spanish missionaries incorporated some indigenous traditions into Christian celebrations, fostering a blend of cultures, or syncretism. Christmas, for example, coincided with festivals like the Aztec celebration of the god Huitzilopochtli. The tamale was eventually appropriated and became part of Spanish cuisine, and tamale-making became an associated ritual with Catholic holidays, most importantly, Christmas. Further, the timing of tamale-making during Christmas aligns perfectly with the corn harvest season in the region. Many of the ingredients used in tamale recipes, such as masa (corn dough) and dried chilies, are readily available.

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
The Communal Spirit of Tamales One of the hallmarks of tamale preparation is the labor-intensive process that involves multiple family members or even whole communities coming together to make them. The process is taught, and complex secret family recipes are guarded. Some recipes have more than 100 steps. This communal effort creates an atmosphere of togetherness and joy during the holiday season, promoting unity and celebration. It’s not just about the food; it’s about the shared experience.
Over time, the tradition of making and savoring tamales at Christmas has become deeply ingrained in the cultural heritage of the Rio Grande Valley. Families use this time to connect with their roots, passing down culinary traditions from generation to generation. It’s a way of preserving the past while celebrating the present. As you gather around the table with loved ones this holiday season, take a moment to appreciate the rich history and cultural significance behind each delectable tamale. Whether you enjoy them with a savory filling or a sweet surprise, tamales are a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the unity it brings during this festive time of the year.

DID YOU KNOW the Port Isabel lighthouse is more than 170 years old? By Dr. Kimberly Selber
Sitting regally in the southernmost part of the Lone Star State, the Port Isabel Lighthouse has commanded attention for more than 170 years. Overlooking the azure waves of the Gulf of Mexico and nestled in the quaint town of Port Isabel, Texas, this lighthouse’s storied past offers a journey through the annals of maritime history.
E
rected in 1852, the Port Isabel Lighthouse was originally built to guide ships safely through Brazos Santiago Pass, which leads into the Laguna Madre, a lagoon tucked between the mainland and South Padre Island. Standing 57 feet tall, the lighthouse has been a sentinel for seafarers, playing a critical role in maritime safety for decades. Its unique location and height also offer unobstructed panoramic views of South Padre Island, the Queen Isabella Causeway, and the beautiful Laguna Madre Bay. Tracing the Tide of Time The Port Isabel Lighthouse bears the marks of history. In the Civil War, it served as an observation post for both Confederate and Union forces, testifying to its strategic importance. In the 20th century, it underwent several restorations, transforming it from a maritime guidepost into a historical monument. In 1957, it was turned over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and declared a state park. A Journey to the Top Visitors to the Port Isabel Lighthouse can take a spiraling 75-step climb up a narrow, winding staircase. The journey to the top may be a bit challenging for some, but the reward is undoubtedly worth it. Once you reach the viewing platform, the vista that unfolds is breathtaking. Tickets are required. Lighting the Way While the Lighthouse may not be used for seafaring safety today, the 3rd Order Fresnel lens is lit nightly thanks to the Texas Historical Commission. Historically, the lighthouse was active from 1852 to 1905, when it was decommissioned. The lens was removed, and the lighthouse sat dark until 1952 when the building and surrounding area became a Texas State Park; it was ornamentally illuminated for seventy years. In November 2022, the 3rd Order Fresnel Lens was installed, bringing an authentic experience for visitors to the lighthouse. Exploring the Surroundings After your ascent of the lighthouse, a visit to the surrounding grounds is not to be missed. The park is a verdant haven, perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls.
Located near the lighthouse is the charming replica of the Keepers Cottage, now functioning as a museum. This cottage, which would have housed the lighthouse keeper and their family, provides insights into the life and tasks of the keepers who maintained this navigational beacon.

SOCIALIFE RGV HISTORY
Edinburg Mural Showcases History of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley By Melissa Peña, Exhibits & Collections Coordinator
F
or years, graduating classes have gifted their alma maters with a memento: they planted a tree, mounted a plaque, or installed something of significance. Hanging in the collections area of the Museum of South Texas History is a mural gifted to Edinburg Junior College by the graduating class of 1938. The mural is a 6-foot by 12-foot, 3-panel painting created by Humberto Cavazos, a native of Tabasco, Texas—now known as La Joya. Its theme is education and the diversity of paths a student may select. In Cavazos’ interpretation, each person represents a different college or career, holding an item that illustrates what that career looks like. Every person in the painting is identifiable. In the center is Lorene Kelley, an Edinburg resident representing the spirit of education. Around Kelley are Phyllis Cramer, Lloyd Woody, Arthur Jayson, and Mana Cavazos (the artist’s daughter). Cornelia Grasso holds the college newspaper, The Beacon. Representing the sciences with a microscope is Carlota Vela from Laguna Seca Ranch. Clementin Barrera is drawing on a blue art board. Besides her, representing athletics is Joaquin

Cantu, who was later killed in World War II. The man standing behind the microscope is Chito Cavazos, a pre-med student, and E. Fernandez represents chemistry by measuring a liquid into a beaker. Mildred Clark and Fritz Hagedorn are on either side of the main mural panel. They stand in caps and gowns with symbols of careers and progress behind them. Cavazos was born in 1909 to Refugio and Narcisco Cavazos. His artistic abilities were honed at the New York School of Art in New York City, where he studied alongside Diego Rivera and Jose Arpa. He is most known for a painting he created to represent Mexico at the Chicago World in 1934. He also worked on sketches for Mt. Rushmore. Cavazos’ art was not only in the form of paintings but also in the written word. He wrote a movie script on Pancho Villa and published some of his poetry during W WII. Cavazos taught art and industrial art in Rio Grande City for 28 years and participated in many community service-based organizations. Currently, the mural is not available for public display. Restoration is needed before it can be presented to the community for public viewing.

SOCIALIFE RGV HEALTH
GOOD HEALTH IS EVERYTHING: MAKE YOURS A PRIORITY Know When to Make a Doctor’s Appointment and When to Head to the Emergency Room
The Role of Regular Medical Checkups When our lives get busy, it’s easy to overlook the importance of regular medical checkups. However, routine visits can play a key role in maintaining overall well-being and helping to catch potential health concerns before they turn into bigger issues. While it might seem convenient to only see a clinician when you’re not feeling well, preventive healthcare can improve the quality of your life – and might even save it. Here are a few reasons to make your annual checkup a priority:
Early Detection:
Health Monitoring:
Regular checkups can help identify issues in their early stages. Detecting conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and even some types of cancer early may increase the chances of successful treatment. Getting timely screenings and tests can also help detect underlying issues before symptoms are noticeable.
For individuals with chronic diseases, regular checkups are an important time to monitor your condition’s progression. Doctors can assess the effectiveness of ongoing treatments and make needed adjustments. Proactive management can help prevent complications and ensure you are receiving the most appropriate care for your specific needs.
Preventive Measures: Beyond the detection of existing conditions, regular checkups can lead to helpful discussions about preventive measures. Your doctor may offer personalized advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including recommendations for diet, exercise, and stress management. This is also a good time to get current on any needed vaccinations.

Peace of Mind: Prioritizing regular checkups can provide a sense of security and peace of mind. Knowing that your health is monitored by a professional can alleviate the stress and uncertainty that often accompany health concerns.

Know When to Go to the Emergency Room While regular checkups are a fundamental aspect of maintaining good health, there are several conditions considered an emergency because they require quick treatment or surgical intervention. These include:
• Wheezing or difficulty breathing • Chest pain • Sudden inability to see, move, or walk • Unexplained seizures • Sudden intense pain • Broken bones • Blurred or double vision • Choking • Bleeding that won’t stop
The ER is equipped to handle conditions like these, and specialists can often be consulted quickly if needed. Keep in mind that going to the ER for nonemergent health issues can cause delays for people who truly need emergency care. Doing so may also result in higher medical expenses. If your doctor’s office is unavailable and your concern can’t wait, consider visiting a local urgent care instead
However, if you are unclear whether your health problem represents a medical emergency, get to the ER or call 911. Due for a Checkup or Have Another Medical Concern? South Texas Health System® Clinics make it easier than ever to schedule an appointment with one of our many primary care providers. A variety of appointment options are available, including evening and weekend hours at many locations, as well as same-day or next-day appointments*. To make an appointment, schedule online at sthsclinics.com. Accepts Medicare, Medicaid and most medical insurance plans. *Scheduling options may vary by provider; visit our website for details. WHAT THE!~
ETIQUESTIONS Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa
Gift giving!!!! It is so confusing sometimes when I have to get gifts for people in my office. I consider some of my colleagues great friends and want to gift them something special during the holidays. However, not all of my colleagues are great friends, and I don’t usually give them as nice of a gift. What should I do so that feelings don’t get hurt and I am not seen as rude? The holidays are a great time to show our love and appreciation for those around us. It is ok to give gifts to your closest work colleagues since they are your friends. However, I suggest you give the gifts discreetly, preferably outside the office. The last thing you want to do is hurt anyone’s feelings or, as you put it, be seen as rude. Also, keep the gift simple and moderately priced. It truly is the thought that counts.
For the first time in a very long time, I am planning our holiday party at my home and am super excited. What is the key to holiday party planning? I want everything to be amazing for all of my guests. Many experts feel that the key to great holiday parties is in the planning. Get the invitations out early. During the holiday season, people’s calendars fill up fast, so plan your holiday party guest list and send out your invitations four weeks in advance. This allows everyone to plan accordingly so they can be present on the big day!
I attended my first holiday gathering of the season and was confused (for a minute) with the table setting. There were so many glasses and utensils that I didn’t know which one was mine. It seemed like all of our items were very close together. How do you know which glass is yours and which is your neighbor’s? Holiday parties and dinner with friends and family are a great way to celebrate the season. Your drinking glass(es) should always be located on the upper right side of your plate. When tables are crowded, it is often confusing since the glasses might be close to the plate next to you as well. Just remember, the right side is yours! Happy Holidays. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa, Ph.D. is a wife, mother, and educator living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. She is a graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University with a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies. In addition, she holds an Associate of Arts degree in Education from McLennan Community College, Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas – Pan American, and a Master of Arts in Educational Supervision from the University of Texas – Pan American. T
each For America Rio Grande Valley (TFA RGV) has been at the forefront of strengthening our region’s educational landscape since 1991. We develop a pipeline of transformative leaders to ensure that all children in pre-K-12 classrooms have access to resources and opportunities to attend schools equipped to support their strengths, value their diverse backgrounds, and have the highest expectations for their academic future. Over the past 32 years, TFA RGV has placed more than 1,500 teachers in the Valley. After their initial two-year commitment, they become life-long leaders and advocates for change in education. Of our 220 local alumni of the program, most continue their careers as teachers, school leaders, or leaders within education organizations. This year, TFA RGV will empower a highly selective cohort of over 50 leaders to teach in eleven partner school districts across the Rio Grande Valley for at least two years. Our teachers reflect the diversity of our students in the RGV; about three-quarters

are from the region, and the others are from across the state and country. In addition to this core programming, TFA RGV continues to foster belonging and accelerate learning with The Ignite Fellowship. We recruit and train current college students to lead virtual, small-group tutoring sessions to support middle school reading and math students. We also are piloting a virtual college and career mentoring model. By recruiting and developing new teachers and providing ongoing support to our alumni, we aim to meet our region’s needs for high-quality educators that improve student outcomes, retain our most successful leaders, and continue shaping the sector to ensure all children have access to equitable education. 801 N. Celebrating 46 years of Sea Turtle Inc.
S
ea Turtle Inc. recently celebrated its remarkable 46th anniversary, marking nearly half a century of unwavering dedication to sea turtle conservation, medical care, research, and education. Founded in November 1977 by Ila “the Sea Turtle Lady” Loetscher, this organization has played a pivotal role in safeguarding the endangered sea turtle population and nurturing the pristine ecosystem of South Padre Island. The 46th-anniversary celebration was a nostalgic return to the organization’s roots, as Sea Turtle Inc. welcomed the local community, devoted volunteers, and invaluable partners for an all-day Founders Day event. This special occasion served as a reminder of the organization’s enduring commitment to action, volunteerism, and community values that have been its cornerstone since its inception. “Sea Turtle Inc.’s Founders Day just reconfirms the spirit of action, volunteerism, and community that this organization was built on, which continues in our spirit today,” says CEO Wendy Knight. “As we work to complete construction on the largest fully enclosed sea turtle hospital in the world, reminders about our legacy, our obligation, and our responsibility will continue to drive our vision over the next 50 years.”

PET LIFE
PROTECT YOUR POOCH THIS HOLIDAY By Dr. Ruben Castro
Christmas Day will be here before you know it. The combination of the cooler weather, seeing house and lawn decorations, the twinkling lights, the snow (real or fake), catching up with family members, and the delicious food make this holiday my favorite. And then there’s the tree. Real or fake? People have a preference for which type of tree to put in their house and how to decorate it. A problem many dog owners have is keeping their dog from destroying their tree and the presents and décor around the tree. So, how do you keep your dog away from your Christmas tree while trying to maintain an aesthetically pleasing appearance? Here are some tips to remember so your dog can have a happy and safe Christmas.
1
Beware of pine trees! Dogs are curious creatures and will be drawn to your Christmas tree. A real pine tree has oils and needles, and if ingested, they can cause your dog to have an upset stomach, and the needles can puncture their digestive tract or cause an obstruction.
2
Be mindful of the type of tree decorations you use. The tree ornaments, decoration lights, and water (if it is real) can pose a real danger for your dog, especially if you hang chocolate. If it falls to the floor, your dog has access to it and can eat it and get very sick.
3
Gifts around the tree can be dangerous for your dog, especially if the gift has food. You’d be surprised how many wrapped gifts contain food with smells that attract your dog.
4
Fake trees can have parts that can break off as they age. If your dog swallows tiny plastic pieces, they can cause intestinal blockage.
5
Spray the lower branches of your tree with a dog repellant. You can use a homemade solution of 3 oz. of water mixed with five drops of cinnamon essential oil. Apply this solution twice a week for maximum efficiency. Dogs hate strong smells of cinnamon. Here are some ideas to use to keep your dog away from your Christmas tree: Teach your dog to respect limits and boundaries. You do this by shooing them away from a place, such as the kitchen table, when you are eating. Dogs must understand that sometimes they cannot be in a specific area. Shoo them away from where you have your tree while you are in the area claiming that space. Use a doggie gate. I suggest a nice one. A low-lattice fence around your tree or a cute picket fence can work to keep your dog away. Here are some ideas for fencing:
