years ago Dr Richard Gillett, with Buena Vista Optical in McAllen, and his wife Laura took a

bicycle trip across Africa. They bicycled across South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe they saw the biggest waterfall in the world- Victoria Falls. Next to this spectacular waterfall there were two other attractions- a zip line across the 1,318 ft gorge and a bungee jump from a bridge that crossed the gorge. The bungee jump had a bad reputation. Months before it had broken and a tourist had fallen 364 feet into the crocodile infested water below. The tourist was severely injured and was transferred by air evacuation to South Africa. Dr Gillett and Laura decided on the zip line. Dr Gillett was fitted with a harness and hooked onto the zip line. Just before the attendant pushed Dr Gillett, the attendant confessed that the bungee cord and zip line where made by the same company. The speed of the zip line ride was excess of 65 mph. It was at the same time freighting, thrilling and amazing. Laura followed. After returning from Africa to McAllen Dr Gillett decided to make a zip line on his ranch. The zip line would go from the master bedroom on the second floor to an island on a lake by his house. A total of 300 feet. To secure the zip line he placed two 30 foot telephone poles, one by the house and one on the island.

14 | socialifeweb.com

ICA He bought some galvanize cable at the hardware store, but it began to rust after just a couple of days. On the internet he found some aviation cable guaranteed not to rust. The hardest part was to determine the slope of the cable- too much and you would painfully crash into the telephone pole and too little you would get stuck half way. Reading on the internet he found an article on zip line that stated the desired slope was 7 percent. But he had no way to determine a seven percent slope. After thinking about it for a while, it was obvious, - it should drop 7 feet per 100th feet of cable. That would be 21 feet drop in 300 feet. For ten dollars he purchased a used sight level and marked comparative heights on the two telephone poles. From the mark on the pole on the island he measured down 21 feet and strung the cable. It worked perfectly. The ride is not as exhilarating as the ride across Victoria Falls, but it can still get your heart rate up and get your eyes wide open.

Memorial Funeral Home Receives National Recognition for Innovative Programming, Outstanding Community Outreach

Memorial Funeral Home of San Juan and Edinburg has been honored by the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) with the 2017 Pursuit of Excellence Award. Only 165 firms from around the world received this prestigious recognition, placing Memorial Funeral Home among an elite group of funeral service providers. Pursuit of Excellence Award recipients raise the bar on funeral service excellence by adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards and providing unsurpassed service to families and communities. To earn an NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award, a participating funeral home must meet or exceed business standards set forth by the program and demonstrate proficiency in key areas of funeral service, such as compliance with state and federal regulations; providing ongoing education and professional development opportunities for staff; offering outstanding programs and resources to bereaved families; maintaining an active level of involvement within the community; participating and actively serving in the funeral service profession; and promoting funeral home services through a variety of marketing, advertising and public relations programs. Participants are also required to adhere to a Pledge of Ethical Practices. “Memorial Funeral Home’s voluntary participation in the Pursuit of Excellence Award program reflects a clear determination to exceed the expectations of those they serve,” said NFDA Chief Executive Officer Christine Pepper, CAE. “This prestigious recognition assures families of the high-quality, compassionate service they will receive the moment they walk through the funeral home’s front door.” More information about the NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award program can be found on the association's website, www.nfda.org/pursuitofexcellence.

It’s hot in South Texas, but it can’t stop us to wear our beloved ankle boots. Everyone is wearing them, but instead of copying what everyone is wearing or purchasing your hundredth pair of black boots, why not think outside the box and buy a pair that’s exciting, bold, and make a statement?

THE IT

ANKLE BOOTS OF THE SEASON

I’ve rounded up the coolest ankle boot trends so you don’t have to think twice about feeling in the know when it comes to this season’s best. Including white, glitter, and satin ankle boots, this boots are anything but boring.

1. White Boots

I

’ve talked about this trend in the last issue, it’s totally okay to wear white after Labor Day, as white boots are a HUGE trend right now. If there’s one thing every fashion girl is wearing this fall, it’s white boots. They add a dose of cool to everything from work wear to night-out attire. Opt for white booties and choose an outfit that is simple yet cool, and tailored yet comfortable to go with them. White boots make more of a statement than you may realize, so jeans, a T-shirt, and a blazer make a flawless combo.

2. Sock Boots

P

erhaps, you’ve noticed this trend steady reaching a level of sartorial omnipresence. Sock boots are especially cool when you can actually appreciate the fact that they flatter the ankles and legs extremely well. Instead of wearing them with skinny jeans or long trousers, show them off a bit by pairing them with a midi dress or a mini skirt. You can also update your office uniform with a button down, wrap skirt and these of-the-moment sock booties.

3. Glitter Boots

T

here’s nothing more festive than a special pair of glitter boots. Glitter boots showed up on many runways (like Chanel) and will upgrade wardrobe staples. A more traditional outfit always looks amazing when paired with this modern style. Wear them with a pleaded midi skirt and a belted cardigan, but they still make a statement worn with a plain white t-shirt and jeans. Wear them during the day, they’re not just for the evening!

4. Red Boots

W

ant boots that will stop traffic? Ensure you don’t look like your wearing a costume by paring them with a more subdued color palette or even a monochromatic look. Red boots continue to be an ultra-chic trendsetting staple and I can’t stop wearing them. There are many style options for this statement making shoes like sock silhouettes and patent leather taking over. Designers like Gucci, Fendi and Givenchy provided all the proof you need on the runway. Crisp red is the perfect finishing touch.

Why do we break diets?

L

et’s speak truth here. People break diets all the time.. why though? Well it’s simple really, mental

commitment isn’t there. When you diet, you’re not suppose to do it for the rest of your life, you do it for the results it gives you. Once you achieved the result then you find a balance in eating healthy and staying with the result. Also most people who do the diet curse at their food and make the experience negative, self sabotaging and setting themselves up for failure. You get out of it what you put in. People that “diet” for years is because they don’t fully commit to get their end result the first time around they dieted. it’s important to note that eating healthy and dieting are not the same. Dieting is usually unhealthy but again it’s to achieve or obtain a end result for a sport, an event or a certain look for your body. Eating healthy is just that, ingesting anything and everything to

By: Albert Gramoff @theycallmeyoda 956-617-6528

achieve optimum health but that doesn’t mean you have an awesome six pack or bikini body.
