A JOURNEY TO

EDUCATING MENTAL, PH

Point your kids in the right direction— when they're old they won't be lost . Proverbs 22:6

S

OUTH TEXAS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY is a school with a unique brand of education. It is a private school that has been in operation since the 1980’s, previously called Upper Valley Adventist Academy. This longevity has allowed the school to see the growth of McAllen, while the school has undergone growth of its own. In 2004 the school moved to its current location and then expanded to a nearby lot in 2009, with an amazing church sandwiched in-between. This school is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist educational system and is located on North Ware road just above 4-mile/ Lark and offers a unique brand of education: spiritual, mental, and physical. SPIRITUAL STCA is a school that puts the Christian message first. We do not shrink away from showing our faith as a school through daily prayer, worship in the classroom, and weekly chapels. These items might be controversial in public education, but at STCA they are common. We speak of Jesus and his role in our lives with power to our students. The students also have the opportunity to take their faith in their own hands by leading out in chapel, or even being the speaker. We do not stop of speaking the message, but we also live the message.

22 | socialifeweb.com

Community outreach is an important part of the experience at STCA. We go out and do community outreach in the McAllen area and abroad. In 2013, STCA went to Belize and helped to build school as a part of our outreach. Another part of our outreach has also been in our local community as well. The school has helped feed our citizens around Christmas and Thanksgiving for many years, and even helped to build a house for a family in need. Christianity and community outreach play important parts in our educational program at STCA. MENTAL STCA gives its students a high quality education. In the past 3-years STCA has undergone a technology revolution to fully jump into the 21st Century. I-pads for all high school students, a Mac Lab, Aero Hive hubs, and fiber-optic cabling have allowed our school to fully embrace 21st Century technology, thus having a digital education. We have not stopped at just including technology, but we have certified teachers for our classrooms that provide instruction to students they know by name. In grade Pre-Kindergarten through 5, the students are in a self-contained classroom with one teacher, but specialized teachers for computer education, choir, and physical education. In our Junior High and High School we

have certified teachers that specialize in the subject areas that they teach. Our teaching staff also includes a Doctor of Musical Arts that leads our band which has high quality instruments that we purchased 3-months ago! We also provide enrichment through Accelerated Reader, Accelerated Math, and Renaissance Learning's testing; for Early Literacy, Star Math, and Star Reading. When it comes to accelerated math we take it seriously because we want our students to read! We have a dedicated librarian and a well-stocked library as well as rewards for students that reach the Accelerated Reading goal for the semester. We have an annual Science Fair that allows students to put the scientific method into practice. These are all important parts to the mental education that students receive at South Texas Christian Academy. PHYSICAL STCA lives it message for health through activity. A part of our mission is to educate the body as well as the spirit and mind. Physical activity is an important part of our education that is why we have programs and special events to keep our students moving. We give our students breaks to enjoy the outside during the day on those cool winter days. In our

physical education program we have a teacher whose only job is to teach physical education and he uses the SPARK curriculum to enhance student involvement in Physical Education. For those students that like playing on sports teams, from 5th grade through 12th grade we have teams for soccer, basketball, and volleyball. These teams play against Public Schools and Christian Schools in the valley, and our high school teams are involved in TAPPS statewide competition. Physical activity is an important part of our school. South Texas Christian Academy is a school that is a unique blend between the 21st Century education and Christian education. We offer a spiritual education based upon the teaching of Jesus Christ. We give our students opportunities to reach out to people in need in our community and our hemisphere. We provide an excellent education that has seen some of our alumni attend Johns Hopkins University, New York University, and Tecnolรณgico de Monterrey. We keep our students active and educate them on important health principles to keep them living long healthy lives. These are all the part of South Texas Christian Academy. We encourage you to look at our school and apply today. Sincerely, Eric Enright Principal of South Texas Christian Academy

BRAIN LEWIS Daddy, Thank you for loving us, inspiring us and pushing us to be the very best version of ourselves each and every day. We love you !! Leslie, Matthew and Michael

DR. JOEY CAZARES Our dad is our hero. Kids might say that when they're young and adults might joke about that, but in our case, it's no joke and couldn't be more true. We have never known our father to break a promise, lie, or do anything that would negatively affect someone else. He works harder than anyone I know and is the strongest person we ever met. Most of all, he has a huge heart and does the most he can in the best ways that he knows how to in order to bring happiness to those around him. We consider ourselves the luckiest people alive to have him as our dad. We have never witnessed a more unconditional love anywhere than from our dad and we could not be more thankful for it. He is our ultimate role model. He is our hero. We love you, Bryan, Jose, Ali & Arlene

FATHER'S DAY

FATHER'S DAY PEPE CABEZA DE VACA To the best dad ever‌ If it weren't for you, we wouldn't know who we would be. You once told us that your goal in life was to make a difference, we, let us tell you that you already complete that goal when we first laid eyes on you! You change us completely, you taught us so many things we thought were impossible to learn, you showed us new adventures and for that reason our love for you is much bigger than you can imagine, you mean everything to us. We want to thank you for everything you have done for us. Happy Father’s Day! With love, Baby Pepito, Tania, Mauricio & Mario

LEON DE LEON We are blessed with the most loving and generous father who is always willing to put others before himself. His powerful words of advice motivate us and inspire us everyday of our lives.

DR. JIM GARZA To the greatest, coolest, most fun dad Happy Father's Day! I hope you know how blessed we are to have you in our lives, today and always. You will always be the "cool dad", our best friend, comedian, greatest mentor, and motivator. God gave us the greatest gift when he chose you as our dad. Thank you for all you have done for us and continue to do everyday. You are and will always be our greatest gift. We will forever be grateful for you daddy. Cheers to you dad - we love you! Butterfly kisses, Alexis, Jacob & Amanda

BALDOMERO VELA, SR. In honor of Father's Day, we remember our father, Baldomero Vela, Sr. who passed away peacefully on June 2nd, 2017. Our father taught us the value of hard work and encouraged us to serve our community. We will cherish our memories of him and keep him in our hearts always.

hat's special about the Ketogenic diet is that it changes how your body feels and most importantly how your body uses energy by placing you in a state known as Ketosis, and this is where all the magic happens. In Ketosis your body starts utilizing substances known as Ketone bodies which are produced by the breakdown of your body fat. It is important for you to first understand that your body loves glucose, and if it has glucose on hand it's going to use that first for energy. In a Keto diet the amount of carbohydrates you consume goes down, therefore in order to combat the fat your body uses stored glucose but that eventually is going to run out as well. The next step your body will do is to convert ketones into energy with a few steps that happen with the liver and the kreb cycle ( series of chemical reactions to release energy from carbohydrates, fats, and protein). This also is really good news for your brain since even though your brain loves glucose also, it can function on ketone bodies as well. In fact, ketone bodies provide more energy per gram for the brain vs glucose. So it's a win- win for your mental capacity!
