127 years ago, the founder of Mercedes-Benz challenged his employees to deliver “the best or nothing.” The 2014 S-Class is proof that his words still resonate to this day. Building on its own history of innovation, the groundbreaking new S-Class features dual 12.3" high-resolution screens, hot stone massage seating and an aromatic filtration system on the inside, while outside, a revolutionary MAGIC BODY CONTROL system uses cameras to scan the road for imperfections and instantly adjust the suspension for a superior ride. The 2014 S-Class is the flagship Mercedes-Benz that not only makes a statement, but answers a calling.

CADILLAC REVEALED

the ELMIRAJ 2013 CONCEPT

Cadillac revealed the Elmiraj Concept, a grand coupe expressing the pure enjoyment of driving and exploring new dimensions for Cadillac’s ongoing expansion. The Cadillac Elmiraj Concept showcases a new vision for luxury driving and the top of the brand’s expanding range. “Cadillac is fueled by the creativity of our designers, led by Ed Welburn,” said Bob Ferguson, senior vice president, Global Cadillac. “Elmiraj provides a look inside the Cadillac Studio on how we envision performance and luxury for the next generation of luxury drivers.” A modern update to the classic format of a two-door grand coupe, Elmiraj is a pure expression of streamlined design and engaging rear-wheel drive performance. At 205 inches (5207mm) in overall length, Elmiraj is four-seat coupe with presence and poise. Taking up from where the memorable Ciel Concept left off, Elmiraj is a statement of pure luxury and performance with a purposeful character and proportion. The concept advances Cadillac’s philosophy of dramatic design and

performance, and its commitment to lightweight, agile cars. Elmiraj is constructed with chassis and structural elements of an ongoing Cadillac vehicle development project slated for future production. This new vehicle architecture expands the brand’s commitment to lightweight RWD performance, exemplified in the ATS sport sedan and the all-new and elevated 2014 CTS launching in the U.S in the Fall of 2013. “Elmiraj advances Cadillac’s provocative modern design and performance, contrasted with bespoke craftsmanship and luxury,” said Mark Adams, Cadillac design director. “It explores performance driving, as well as how we’re approaching elevating the Cadillac range and new dimensions of Art & Science philosophy.”

edition, and expands it to the classic performance format of a V8 engine. DRAMATIC EXTERIOR PROPORTION With a heritage of imaginative designs, Cadillac approaches concept cars as a method for projecting design forward rather than simply exaggerating or “teasing” future production models. Elmiraj was created from this mindset, and therefore suggests new territory for Cadillac Art & Science. “This concept is the second chapter, following the Ciel Concept, of our exploration of the personas of true luxury,” said Clay Dean, executive director of

Cadillac Elmiraj is powered by a 4.5-liter twin turbocharged V8 delivering an estimated 500 hp. The engine takes the baseline technology from the new Cadillac Twin Turbo V6 featured in the upcoming 420-hp 2014 CTS V-sport www.societymagazine.net

advanced design. “This project originated around the simple persona of “the drive,” or the visceral experience of driving a great luxury coupe. It’s an expression of the confidence and poise you feel driving a high-performance car, which we feel is an essential element of top-level luxury.” The dramatic proportion communicates power and performance. A long dashto-axle front profile, a Cadillac signature, gives the coupe a performance-oriented form. The long wheelbase and clean body side characterizes the car’s spacious dimensions and elevated status. The fast cabin sits within a fuselage where taut fender lines spline through the full sectioned body, literally blending art and science. Cadillac’s vertical light signature is represented in both the headlamp graphic and tail lamp. A gently applied feature line in the sheet metal extends the full length of the body side, connecting those vertical front and rear elements. “Elmiraj is about poise and proportion,” said Niki Smart, lead exterior designer. “We wanted a mature statement for Cadillac, where simplicity and subtle adornments create a purposeful presence.” Cadillac Elmiraj contains design elements emphasizing Cadillac’s capabilities for engaging driving performance in its production portfolio. Two vents in the car’s long hood are functional, acting as hot air outlets for the twin turbo engine. Elmiraj has 22-x-9-in. aluminum wheels are backed by large ceramic brakes with Cadillac monoblock calipers. The car’s rich blue exterior finish wears the brand’s V-sport designation, Cadillac’s new level slotting directly under the highperformance V-Series.

The face of Cadillac Elmiraj experiments with new visual elements, yet is unmistakably Cadillac. The grille emphasizes the car’s substantial road presence. The Cadillac Crest appears in a conceptual form, streamlined and tailored to the car’s overall design. This design idea for a revised crest reflects the fact that Cadillac’s unmistakable symbol has evolved dozens of times through history to mark new eras or design achievements. EXQUISITELY CRAFTED INTERIOR The interior of Elmiraj blends elegantly crafted luxury and generous space with driver-focused performance elements. The upper section of the instrument panel is a single piece extending across the full width of the car, while the lower forms a cockpit space tailored for performance. “A concept provides not only an opportunity to explore new design ideas, but to pursue new techniques for elegant craftsmanship and materials,” said Gael Buzyn, lead interior designer. Backlit titanium trim curves from the cowl to the doors, dividing the rich upper camel leather from the wood trim. Cadillac Studio craftsmen handpicked fallen Brazilian Rosewood, a wood veneer prized for its use for hundreds of years in home furnishings and musical instruments. The wood is hand-cut into three dimensional sections for perfect control of the grain flow. The car’s instrumentation features an analog tachometer and speedometer that are transparent.

www.societymagazine.net

Directly behind the analog gauges sits a wide screen, high resolution display which projects driver information and the output of a front-mounted camera. A 10-inch touchscreen for navigation and connectivity can be concealed inside the instrument panel when not in use. The 2+2 layout features highperformance seats, designed to support spirited driving while also delivering luxury accommodation. Elmiraj passengers might actually lobby to sit in the back. The rear bucket seats each contain a valet feature to ease entry and exit. The front bucket seat slides 10 inches forward while the rear bucket seat slides 4 inches forward to meet the passenger, then slides him or her back into position once seated. The rear bucket seats recline for additional comfort. MANY OF THE MOST CELEBRATED AUTOMOTIVE DESIGNS THROUGH HISTORY HAVE BEEN LUXURY COUPES “We were influenced in particular by the 1967 Eldorado, both its actual design and the fact that in its time that car was a very stark contrast and a new direction. More recent design like the CTS-V Coupe and the ELR are provocative,” said Dean, the advanced design director. “Both of these cars were major statements of performance and luxury and drove Cadillac forward into new territory.” Designers at General Motors’ advanced design studio in North Hollywood, Calif., under the direction of Frank Saucedo, led the development of the car’s interior and exterior. Elmiraj was hand-built by inhouse craftsmen in Michigan.

Robert Collier says, “Vision gives you the impulse to make the picture your own.” Thank you for reading SOCIETY and take a moment to read a few quotes from leaders, authors and other Visionaires. Kurt Hahn There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less. Henri Matisse There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted. Ralph Waldo Emerson This time like all times is a very good one if we but know what to do with it. KM: Following global economic slowdowns in the past five years, have you seen any significant changes in how and where UHNW individuals are spending their money? Have you seen a trend toward investing more heavily in alternative assets? DL: There has indeed been a paradigm change in the investment patterns of the ultra-wealthy since the global financial crisis. Up until recently, many were risk averse, steering clear of anything but the most basic of products, and hiking their exposure to cash and tangible assets, including real estate, gold, and luxury assets like art and wine. As the global economy has picked up in the last 18 months, so has investor appetite for yield, and accordingly, higher-risk products are back in vogue. But it is very much a case of ‘gone but not forgotten,’ and many investors are more demanding, hands-on, and focused on value-for-money than they were before. Increasingly, they are doing deals themselves through private equity and angel investment, rather than pay fees to a private banker or fund manager. KM: You are tuned in to where people are spending their money in luxury markets—any thoughts on the next big trend? DL: Asia is the fastest growing market for the luxury goods industry, but brands must remain nimble to stay ahead of changing tastes.

The Ancient Greeks considered fire to be a divine element, and they maintained perpetual fires in front of their principal temples. This was the case in the sanctuary of Olympia, where the Ancient Olympic Games took place. The flame was lit using the rays of the sun, to ensure its purity, and a skaphia, the ancestor of the parabolic mirror used today for lighting the Olympic flame. A flame burned permanently on the altar of the goddess Hestia, and such fires were also lit on the altars of Zeus and Hera, in front of whose temple the Olympic flame is lit today. NICK SAKIEWICZ

STATE OF

THE UNION PHILADELPHIA, PA By Christian S. Dougherty

I recently had the distinct pleasure of sitting down and talking to the busiest man in national soccer, Nick Sakiewicz. Not only did I learn about the man, but also the game that is his true passion. The rules of this game were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863 and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of “football” played at the time, specifically rugby football . The term soccer originated in England, first appearing in the 1880s as an Oxford abbreviation of the word “association.” Within the English-speaking world, association football is now usually called football in the United Kingdom, and mainly soccer in Canada and the United States. Other countries, such as Australia and New Zealand, may use either, or both terms. An average day for Mr. Sakiewicz is...well, not an average day. Although, when asked if he enjoyed his work, he stated, “This doesn’t feel like work at all.” The passion that drives this individual can be seen in his work on the field and in the office. A native of Passaic, New Jersey, Nick Sakiewicz is the CEO & Operating Partner of Keystone Sports and Entertainment LLC, the parent company of Philadelphia Union. In addition to this, he spearheaded the founding of the Union and construction of PPL Park, a massive soccer stadium located on the banks of the Delaware River in Chester, Pennsylvania. Prior to his current success, this team player was the President of AEG New York, responsible for operating AEG’s sports, entertainment and real estate assets, including the development and construction of Red Bull Arena, state-of-the-art stadium and mixed-use development in Harrison, New Jersey. Among his successes with AEG, was his role in the record-setting $100-million sale of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars to Red Bull Energy Drink Company of Austria. From 2000-2005 Sakiewicz was President and GM of the MetroStars, where he overhauled the organization, resulting

in the MetroStars capturing the MLS Eastern Division title. The team made the MLS Cup Playoffs four out of five seasons under the leadership of Sakiewicz. During his tenure there, the club increased corporate sponsorship revenues more than 500% and grew attendance every season — despite not owning its own stadium. As a collegiate goalkeeper at the University of New Haven, Sakiewicz earned NCAA All-American honors in 1981 and All-New England honors each season from 1980-83. He is a member of the UNH Hall of Fame and still holds every major goalkeeping record at the school. He went on to play professionally with F.C. Nantes in the French First Division, the New York Arrows of Major Indoor Soccer League, and F.C. Beleneses of the Portuguese First Division. Sakiewicz retired from professional soccer after a season with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the American Professional Soccer League. A two-time MLS Executive of the Year, Sakiewicz garnered his first award in 1999 as President and General Manager of the Tampa Bay Mutiny. Working with some of the biggest names in the sport (Tim Howard, Clint Mathis, Steve Ralston, Eddie Gaven, Tab Ramos and Carlos Valderamma), Sakiewicz has a history of recognizing, signing and developing young talent. The Philadelphia Union and YSC to

work in conjunction with local youth clubs to share in the process of developing players. The club-neutral format enables gifted youth players to remain registered and playing with their local club teams while receiving free supplemental training and competition opportunities when “called up” to represent Philadelphia Union. There are currently three phases of the Union Academy. Step I is the YSC Union Juniors program (ages 8-12), Step II is the Union Juniors Academy (ages 13-14), and Step III is the Union Youth Academy (ages 15-18). The most innovative element of the Union/YSC Model is Step III. The Union and YSC have formed a Youth Development Affiliation (YDA) program open to all clubs that meet certain technical criteria (i.e., coaching staff qualifications, curriculum plan design, etc.). Founding Youth Development Affiliate clubs include FC DELCO, PA Classics, PDA, Lehigh Valley United, Penn Fusion and YMS. This unique program provides selected players a direct and authentic link to the professional game, while offering affiliate clubs oversight and guidance from the Union/YSC Technical Staff on player development best practices. Can you give a brief summary of future plans for the stadium and for you personally? And, for the team? “We have a short, medium and long range plan for the stadium which

allows us the flexibility to refresh the building with new things every year, and eventually expanding it to 30,000 seats, 60 suites, two restaurants and 2,000 club seats. The short term plan is each year the stadium will feature new amenities and activities for fans to enjoy their time at PPL Park, aside from the game itself. For example, this year we built a tailgate area for our fan groups that accommodates a 2,000 person outdoor party. We’ve added nice picnic tables to the plaza areas surrounding the stadium and refreshed many of the areas inside. In the medium term 3-5 years we will start phasing in expansion plans to add a second restaurant, add club seats and other fan amenities. The long term plan has us adding another 10,000 seats, an additional video board and doubling the suite capacity to 60 suites.” After all the hard work has paid off, what’s your favorite vacation/ destination spot? “I have several, but I would say my favorite is the Amalfi coast of Italy – great weather, incredible food, lots of soccer and warm inviting people.” I also get the impression you appreciate a good bottle of wine, what do you enjoy most when not on the field? “2006, or older, Far Niente Cabernet of Silver Oak Napa.” Cheers!

RENEWABLE ENERGY GERMAN ARCHITECT

German architect André Broessel, of Rawlemon, has looked into his crystal ball and seen the future of renewable energy. In this case it’s a spherical suntracking solar energy-generating globe — essentially a giant glass marble on a robotic steel frame. But this marble is no toy. It concentrates both sunlight and moonlight up to 10,000 times — making its solar harvesting capabilities 35 percent more efficient than conventional dual-axis photovoltaic designs. André Broessel was a finalist in the World Technology Network Award 2013 with the globe’s design and afterward produced this latest version, called Betaray, which can concentrate diffuse light such as that from a cloudy day.

‘PROJECT GUTENBERG’ IS FOR BOOZE, NOT BOOKS

By Drew Prindle

Apparently, French distillery Pernod Ricard doesn’t care that there’s already such a thing as Project Gutenberg. In a bold move, the company (who’s best known as the maker of Absolut vodka, Beefeater gin, and Jameson whiskey) went ahead and made its own Project Gutenberg. Oddly enough, Pernod’s project involves books too, but instead of being filled with literature, these “books” are full of liquor. In a nutshell, Pernod’s Project Gutenberg is a modular, app-controlled cocktail dispenser system that uses removable book-shaped containers to dish out drinks. To use it, just pop open the app and pick your poison – the app will guide you through the rest of the mixing process. Each book has a little spout on the front, and will dispense the perfect amount of booze for the particular drink you’ve chosen, and also offer mixing tips for more complicated recipes. Automated bartender machines like this definitely aren’t a new thing, and while this one clearly isn’t the most advanced contraption ever conceived, it differs from other systems in the way that you refill it. Instead of heading over to the liquor store to pick up more hooch, the Project Gutenberg app allows you

40

SOCIETY MAGAZINE

V I S I O N A I R E

to order refills through mail. The idea behind the bookshape of the liquor containers seems to that, with a sturdier, more durable design, they can be shipped to your house more easily, thus saving you from all those time-consuming trips to the booze market.

the like b e

It’s a decent idea, and might be appealing to certain consumers, but it does come with one big drawback. Based on the video below, we gathered that the Project Gutenberg system limits your choices of booze to only the ones made by Pernod Ricard. Don’t get us wrong, we love Beefeater and Jameson as much as the next spirits enthusiast, but we also like to mix things up every so often, and being stuck with the the same selection of liquor is a big drawback. At this point, Project Gutenberg isn’t yet available for purchase or pre-order, but Pernod is working to bring the device to market sometime later this year.

NEW TECHNOLOGY

By André Broessel

www.societymagazine.net

MIT ENGINEERS HAVE INVENTED A JARVIS-STYLE HOME AUTOMATION SYSTEM By Drew Prindle The home automation systems of tomorrow won’t look anything like they do right now. In the future, you wont have to whip out your smartphone and fire up an app to flip your lights on. Hell, you probably wont even need a smartphone. Instead, the automated home of the future will look much more like JARVIS from Iron Man. No clunky remote controls or proximity-based Bluetooth tags – just wave your arms, point at whatever you want to interact with, an always-on 3D motion detector will sense your movements and make it happen. These types of systems are already in the works. Companies like PointGrab and Frog Designs have built working prototypes that allow you to control your home appliances via gestures, but these systems rely on cameras to detect your motion – a technique that’s proven difficult, unwieldy, and unreliable. A team of engineers from MIT has devised a better method – one that

eschews camerabased detection in favor of radio waves, and can detect motion in threedimensional space anywhere in the house, even through walls. The technology, dubbed WiTrack, uses radio signals “whose power is 100 times smaller than Wi-Fi and 1,000 times smaller than cellphone transmissions.” These radio signals reflect off of moving human bodies, and with the help of receivers and triangulation algorithms, the system can use them to effectively determine a person’s position inside the house with an accuracy between 10 and 21 centimeters. Furthermore, in addition to tracking your position, WiTrack can also detect the motion of individual limbs. This means it can not only be used for things like turning lights on/off when you enter or leave a room, but also for specific gesture controls like pointing at appliances to switch them on. Imagine a future where

your house can tell when you’ve gotten out of bed in the morning and automatically turn on the hot water in the shower, or send you an emergency alert when grandma takes a spill in the living room. A system like WiTrack would make stuff like that possible. Right now the system can only track one person at a time, but it serves as solid proof-of-concept that JARVISstyle whole-home gesture control is possible without retrofitting every room with an array of cameras and sensors. Right now it’s just an academic research project, but it’s highly likely to blossom into something bigger in the next few years.

BEATS BY DRE

HANDS OUT $25,000 HEAD By Ryan Waniata

Sometimes it’s hard to fathom why Beats headphones, often regarded by audio enthusiasts as over-priced and underperforming, seem to be the only brand pro athletes wear. But then the company does something like, say, send every Superbowl player a pair of $25,000 gold and diamond encrusted headphones, and things become more clear. The specially designed superphones were forged in two color patterns, a yellow-gold version for the Seattle Seahawks, and a white-gold version for their AFC rivals, the Denver Broncos. The ‘phones sport the words “New York XLVIII 2014,” engraved along the bands in gold, and are also littered with a few diamonds courtesy of Graff diamonds, and cloaked in leather. Each pair also comes packed in its own commemorative case. www.societymagazine.net

THE ICE HOTEL Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

More than two decades on, ICE HOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden still appeals to those looking for adventure. Prudence Patterson relives the magical experience on a tour into the icy wilderness! Each year the ICE HOTEL teams knock down and start from scratch - again. Although it is still in the same idyllic setting, the layout and design have always been changed. Originally only sitting on a plot of 60 square meters, it now covers an impressive 5,500sm. Now into their twenty second year, the experience is still as magical as ever. The hotel was first constructed in 1990, but it wasn’t until 1992 when they had their first selection of overnight ‘guests’. Since then, inquisitive people from all over the world have been flocking to get a taste of the cold side of life - curious about the -5 temperature it provides. Yngve Bergqvist is the founder of ICE HOTEL, and he’s not just living in the nature, but off it. The River Thorne sweeps from the Arctic Circle down to its icy home, Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. During winter it then freezes over, waiting to be sculpted into something magnificent. When approaching the doors, www.societymagazine.net

nothing is given away. Your imagination runs wild as you take in the scale of the ‘igloo hotel’. Stepping through the ice, you’re greeted by the most stunning reception. Whites and crystal blues shimmer off the walls creating their own little cave. With a warm welcome from the hotel staff you are taken to your room. The freezing temperatures are evident. Even moisturizing your skin has been given the red light, just to be safe from catching frost bite. Every room is unique and includes its own personal theme. Thick blankets are laid across your new bed welcoming you in. You can even release the inner Formula One driver and sleep in your custom made car-bed. With it being so cold, your body tries to register to your new surroundings. One way to heat up is to try the ICE BAR. Rather than ‘on the rocks’ your drinks will be ‘in the rocks’, as everything you see is made out of ice. The glass you drink from, the bar you lean on. It’s remarkable! SOCIETY MAGAZINE

The Four Seasons hotels can always be relied upon for a grand, rather oversized experience, and the rooms here are no exception. The vast bed and even vaster bathroom come as little surprise, but they’re so incredibly comfortable and welcoming that even a night’s stay here becomes an invaluable rest-cure for the jaded traveler. This relaxation extends to the eating and drinking options. There’s a fine dining restaurant, Il Teatro, but many might prefer to head outside on a warm night and eat alfresco at the more casual option, La Veranda, where simple but delicious Italian fare is served. Zucchini flowers stuffed with goat’s cheese, linguini with seafood, excellent beef fillet tagliata and swordfish entrecote are all cooked to perfection, taste delicious, and are matched with some of the area’s most

CORNISH MAGIC AT TREGULLAND

The name Tregulland rang bells from the start - it had a place, somewhere in the distant depths of the 22 years of my Cornish memory. As it turned out, I knew exactly where the place was. That rusting signpost, either half buried into the hedgerow or standing starkly on its own - depending on the time of year - on the lonely stretch of road between Launceston and the north coast. In fact, I can’t even count the number of times I’ve driven past that signpost, blissfully unaware of Tregulland’s tiny hamlet - we’re talking every Christmas, Easter and summer holidays forever. Totally unaware too, of the three year project undertaken by Ken and Illona Aylmer to transform derelict barns and a crumbling cottage into a stateof-the-art ecological haven, now managed perfectly by Bonny Shanks to make a true Cornish gem, nestled in a quiet corner of Bodmin Moor. Tregulland is nothing but impressive, both in its size and its detail. Together, the barn and www.societymagazine.net

cottage now sleep 24, in a luxurious self-catering hotel, with big rooms and big views. So too, each tiny nook is uniquely attended too, with no wall untouched, no corner unconsidered. Curios are delicately placed throughout, creating a delicious mish-mash of antique shop crossed with a museum of natural history, painstakingly pieced together by vintage designer Marcus Crane. In the winter, tucked deep into sofas under tartan blankets as a squall squirrels down the valley from Roughtor and out to shiver King Arthur at Tintagel, you are smugly safe from the elements - and time is plentiful for catching a movie on the big screen, enjoying a massage courtesy of a local therapist, or fighting over monopoly money. So too, Tregulland is made for living al-fresco in the Cornish summer, surrounded by fields and space and sky, and only fifteen minutes from sand and surf. If you do manage to coax yourself from these luxury environs, you’ll explore the Cornish coast with a knowing smile - a smile guarding the secret of Tregulland and all that you will retreat to come sundown.

THE

ENDURING ALLURE OF MIAMI It seems strange to think that Miami is on the East Coast of America, as everything about it seems redolent of glimmering, fantastical ideas of the West Coast. The beautiful beaches, sun-kissed inhabitants and glistening white buildings all seem to sum up an ideal of Californian perfection, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to realize that you’re in Florida and not LA. However, once you get past the superficial trappings of heat, style and beauty (and, for many, this will be more than enough), you’re in a far more interesting place than the clichés might suggest. Contemporary Miami represents a melting pot of ideas, people and architecture. If you head down to iconic South Beach, for instance, you’re all but assaulted by 20s magnificence, especially if you head there in mid January and take in the Art Deco parade. The expat guide proudly informs the group that this is the largest concentrated area of Art Deco architecture anywhere in the world. The famous News Cafe is a must to pop in and eat an enormous sandwich or dessert, even if its heyday is now long since past. Heading here, surrounded by the obviously stunning people and with

70

SOCIETY MAGAZINE

V I S I O N A I R E

the sea behind you, it seems like Paradise. Yet Miami’s also been heavily affected by the proximity to Cuba. Anyone who has ever seen Scarface will know that it was Castro’s bright idea to empty the jails and lunatic asylums in 1980 and send his unwanted population over to Miami, creating a tension that has only been exacerbated by subsequent developments. If you head to Miami’s ‘Little Cuba’ district, you’ll enjoy artery-popping food at Versailles, an old-school restaurant that offers a variety of meaty delights, and a stroll along the main boulevards reveals cigar shops and authentic coffee houses amidst the usual signs of big-town Americana. Many visitors to Miami are going to be so enraptured by the beach life and the trappings of luxury that they’re unlikely to give the underlying currents much attention. Two especially excellent places to stay are the Palms Hotel in Miami Beach and the Sonesta Bayfront Hotel in Coconut Grove, both of which offer superbly comfortable rooms, lavishly panoramic sea views and the sort of Latin American-influenced food and drink that you are going to find it difficult to resist. Each has its own set of charms; the Sonesta Bayfront Hotel has a rooftop pool that makes it ideal for lazy sunny days gazing out over the sea, and the Palms Hotel features easy access to the beach so that you can stare at the perfect gymhoned bodies of the beautiful people running past you. What both have in common is that they’re part of the glorious East Coast tradition of making their guests feel at home from the moment of their arrival.

VIRGIN GALACTIC

REACHES NEW HEIGHTS IN THIRD SUPERSONIC TEST FLIGHT

CHIEF PILOT PROVES SPACE SYSTEMS

Today, Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial spaceline, which is owned by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and Abu Dhabi’s aabar Investments PJS, successfully completed the third rocket-powered supersonic flight of its passenger carrying reusable space vehicle, SpaceShipTwo (SS2). In command on the flight deck of SS2 for the first time under rocket power was Virgin Galactic’s Chief Pilot Dave Mackay. Mackay, along with Scaled Composites’ (Scaled) Test Pilot Mark Stucky, tested the spaceship’s Reaction Control System (RCS) and the newly installed thermal protection coating on the vehicle’s tail booms. All of the test objectives were successfully completed. Today’s flight departed Mojave Air and Space Port at 7:22 a.m. PST with the first stage consisting of the WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) carrier aircraft lifting SS2 to an altitude around 46,000 ft. At the controls of WK2 were Virgin Galactic Pilot Mike Masucci and Scaled Test Pilot Mike

Alsbury. On release, SS2’s rocket motor was ignited, powering the spaceship to a planned altitude of 71,000 ft. – SS2’s highest altitude to date – and at a maximum speed of Mach 1.4. SS2’s unique feather re-entry system was also tested during today’s flight. Two important SS2 systems, the RCS and thermal protection coating, were tested during today’s flight in preparation for upcoming full space flights. The spaceship’sRCS will allow its pilots to maneuver the vehicle in space, permitting an optimal viewing experience for those on board and aiding the positioning process for spacecraft re-entry. Commenting on the successful test flight, Sir Richard Branson said: “I couldn’t be happier to start the New Year with all the pieces visibly in place for the start of full space flights. 2014 will be the year when we will finally put our beautiful spaceship in her natural environment of space. Today, we had our own Chief Pilot flying another flawless supersonic flight and proving the various systems required to take us safely to space, as well as providing the very best experience while we’re up there.” This flight was the third opportunity to see a supersonic, rocket-powered test of the Virgin

Galactic system after dozens of successful subsonic test flights. “Today’s flight was another resounding success,” said Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides. “We focused on gathering more transonic and supersonic data, and our chief pilot, Dave, handled the vehicle beautifully. With each flight test, we are progressively closer to our target of starting commercial service in 2014.”

operational hybrid rocket motor. Although today’s flight saw it burn for a planned 20 seconds, the system has been successfully tested in ground firings to demonstrate performance characteristics and burn time sufficient to take the spaceship and its private astronauts to space.

“I have watched SS2 evolve over the years into an incredible vehicle that is going to open up space to more people than ever before,” he said. “To be behind the controls and fly it as the rocket ignited is something I will never forget. She flew brilliantly. All the tests went really well and generated vital data that will be used to further fine-tune our operations.” For Mackay, the flight was a “dream come true.”

HOROSCOPES ARIES (MAR. 21 - APR. 20)

deserve a strong castle complete with moat. Hey, nice turret.

If you have been feeling out of sync with the group dynamic, this is the time to get back into the social swim. Not only are you welcomed back with open arms, you are also everyone’s favorite - even among some who you dislike. We can’t always get the cheerleaders we want, but we can use them to get to the next big important step.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 23 - DEC. 22) Sagittarians might have had trouble reining in their exciting, but explosive ideas. Now, your communication hits home in a compelling, charming, disarming and bold manner. You attract an eager audience for any half baked idea. Why not keep it in the oven a little longer and let it rise to the occasion? You never know who will grab a slice and serve it to others!

TAURUS (APR. 21 - MAY 21) Your past, ill conceived opinions might have created quite a few potholes on your corporate highway, but now you can fill in the spaces with meaningful, substantive and strategic ideas! Taureans sense that they have been feeling their way in the dark without a clear direction, and without a proper guide. Now, keep feeling - you never know who you will touch

CAPRICORN (DEC.23 - JAN. 20) Capricorns can finally manage to wrest control of their finances. And, not a moment too soon! You have squandered too many resources and suffered too many losses due to unmanageable risks. Take stock. The thing is, are you able to prioritize what is most important and what is merely accessory?

AQUARIUS (JAN. 21 - FEB. 19)

GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21) There is no rest for the weary, at least it will seem. The urge will be to kick back but don’t be lazy now, Gemini. Activity has its rewards. Reach out to far flung friends, travel and even expand your knowledge base. Make your mark on the world in no uncertain terms. And, make it more than a grimy oil slick on the cosmic superhighway.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23) All of your inept attempts at meaningful connections seem to have a sense of grace after all. Cancers are ready and raring for love. Find ways to increase the intimacy! For those on the prowl, put on your thinking caps to locate the best meeting spots. Your gift of gab can lead you to all sorts of happy mischief. And, that is certainly the plan!

LEO (JULY 24 - AUG. 23) Just when you thought that certain relationships weren’t worth their salt, things change in a meaningful way. Leos can make the most of any partnership some may surprise you and transform your life. If you are in the market for someone new, this is a good time to make yourself available.

VIRGO (AUG. 24 - SEPT. 23) Beneficial changes can be made on the job. Possibilities occur even without any great effort on your part. You have several choices, but left too long, some of these choices may evaporate. Virgos can go with the flow, allowing themselves to be treated like a piece of styrofoam bobbing along the turgid waters. But this time, pack a paddle.

LIBRA (SEPT. 24 - OCT. 23) Let out a cheer, be footloose and be sure to have fun. Libras find themselves in the center of all the action and looove it. Strut your stuff and show the crowd what you can do - beautifully! Just how over the top will you be? Some things you can chalk up to the foibles of youth and some things have absolutely no excuse. Oh thank goodness!

SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) Turn your attention to your domestic agenda now. Not only can you imagine some incredible home improvements, but you find ways to totally transform your sense of home. A change of residence is possible with an eye to making your situation more secure and less prone to the vagaries of others. Scorpios

Everyone knows that you have to till the soil before you can plant the seeds. And, even Aquarians sense (correctly) it is high time to start anew as the ground shifts, churns and turns. What was hidden, is now revealed. What needs to be buried can be stowed and forgotten. But don’t forget, after all, the dirt has been dished you must plant the seeds so they can sprout.

PISCES (FEB. 20 - MARCH 20) Life has served you more cosmic spit balls than soft balls recently. Chalk it up to bad guesswork on your part. But, now you will bounce back higher than ever. You learn from your mistakes, improve your sense of direction and gain the intuitive energy to make the right guess at the right time. Go with your gut, Pisces, but avoid meals with extra spice.
