The definitive holiday destination
T
ast issue we noted how the Coast was returning to its golden years – back on the map again with top international concerts and stunning soirees. Now we are delighted to report that, in August, things moved up several more notches with a visit that focused an unprecedented international spotlight on the Costa del Sol. Michelle Obama might have been criticised back home for taking friends, family and her extended security entourage on an ultra-luxury five-day holiday to Spain, while oil still washed up on the Gulf of Mexico coastline, but tourism authorities on the Coast were in barely concealed raptures – falling over themselves to capitalise on the free publicity (valued at €800 million by one marketing company). As the US first lady flitted between dinner in Marbella, an afternoon by the sea in Estepona and a day visit to Ronda, two other celebrity heavy-hitters were also attracting international attention to the Coast. Antonio Banderas and Eva Longoria co-hosted the inaugural Starlite Gala at Villa Padierna and, even though Michelle Obama
did not accept their invitation to attend the event (held at the same hotel where she was staying), a glittering cast of national and international A-Listers made it the premier red-carpet extravaganza of the summer season. If Banderas is the favourite local-born son, Julio Iglesias is the Coast’s most fondly welcomed ‘‘Adopted Son’’. As our cover feature and exclusive interview confirms, the Spanish superstar, who has a home just outside Marbella, loves returning to the Coast when his schedule allows it. As he says, “Spain is a fantastic place to have a house and in Andalucía the climate allows you to enjoy the sun and the sea almost all year long.” Other visitors adding a colourful touch of glamour to the Coast the summer were the girls from The Scarletz. In town to support Alexandra Burke for her concert at the Nueva Andalucía bullring, Bryony, Claire, Katiya and Tahnee later joined us at Buddha Beach to provide some fun in the sun for this month’s fashion shoot. CULTURAL CORNER Movie of the Month Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps The sequel to the 1987 Academy Awardwinning Wall Street takes place 23 years after the original and revolves around the 2008 financial crisis. Gekko (DOUGLAS) has just been released from prison and is trying to reconnect with his daughter, Winnie, who wants nothing to do with him. He attempts to warn Wall Street of the forthcoming economic downturn but no one believes him due to his criminal past and conviction. Meanwhile, the mentor of a young Wall Street trader, Jacob, dies unexpectedly and the trader suspects his hedge fund manager of being involved in the death. After accidentally almost running over Barry Speck in his car, Tim realises Barry can be his eccentric person and takes him to the dinner, where they cause havoc and hilarious situations ensue. Quick clips I Spice Girls fans were very excited to learn last month that another movie was in the works – unfortunately the rumours were untrue. Viva Forever is the title of the musical about the girls but it will not be made into a film. I Len Wiseman is in final talks with Sony to direct a “computerised animation” of the 1990 hit Total Recall – the news will be a blow to Bruce Willis, who wanted the talented director to work on Die Hard 5. I Bruce Willis has also just signed on to star in The Cold Light of Day about a young American played by Henry Cavill whose family is kidnapped while on holiday in Spain. He’s left with only hours to find them, and uncover a government conspiracy and the connection between their disappearance and his father’s secrets. I Everyone remembers watching The Yogi Bear Show or has at least heard his famous catchphrase, “I’m smarter than the average bear”, at some time in their life so be prepared this Christmas to hear it again. A live-action animated film is being released in December and will star the voices of Dan Aykroyd as Yogi and Justin Timberlake as his trusty companion Boo Boo.
I Actor Liam Neeson is no longer attached to Lincoln, a film about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, which Steven Spielberg has wanted to make for many years. No date for production has been set yet but Neeson, who previously wanted the role of Lincoln, has now backed out saying he is too old. I Another presidential film in the works is The Butler, which will be based on Wil Haygood’s report of Eugene Allen’s 34 years working at the White House. Allen worked for eight presidents, starting with Harry Truman in 1952 and ending in 1986 with Ronald Reagan. I Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet is having a make-over with an animation film entitled Gnomeo and Juliet about lovers from rival gardens – a number of stars are attached to the film including James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Jason Statham, Ozzy Osbourne and Patrick Stewart. I Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q have teamed up to star in Priest, about a warrior priest who disobeys the church and teams up with a sheriff and a priestess to track down vampires who have kidnapped the priest’s niece. The film is due for release in May 2011. I Josh Hutcherson, who auditioned for Spiderman, is to star in and be the executive producer of a new teen horror called Detention – the film will be about teens in their final year of high school when a slashermovie killer comes to life. I There is reportedly a sequel to G.I Joe in the works, with Stephen Sommers reportedly returning to direct and Channing Tatm reprising his role. The first film earned $302 million worldwide. Apparently not: according to reports, the wedding was just too late notice for them to fly to LA where it was held. Images also surfaced last month of the boys from the band looking good rowing while filming the video for the first single as a five-piece once again – which is going to be called The Flood. JACK JOHNSON has pledged $70,000 for the oil spill relief efforts in the Gulf of Mexico and says he will ask fans to donate and volunteer their time to the spill as he reaches the region on his To The Sea 2010 tour. It seems LADY GAGA has taken the gaga part of her name seriously as she now claims be the re-incarnated spirit of a dead aunt 20

KAYNE WEST is also to release a new album on 5 November – as yet the album is untitled. British pop/ska band MADNESS have added matinee dates to their forthcoming Do Not Adjust Your Nut UK tour and have stated

JAY-Z is to release his memoirs in November; they will be about the rapper’s life including days from his childhood in Brooklyn’s Marcy Projects, to his years as a teenage drug dealer before becoming a hip-hop superstar – the book will be called Decoded. Glamour girl turned DJ LAUREN POPE recently came to the help of BRITNEY SPEARS when she sent her some extensions after seeing the pop star’s awfullooking hair on television. Pope set up Hair Rehab London with the help of Dragon’s Den star PETER JONES in 2008 and the company are now doing very well
with celebrities all over the world including JORDAN and JENNA JAMESON reportedly asking for help with their hair. Speaking of BRITNEY, the singer looks set for a role on popular TV show Glee when it returns to our screens this autumn. Producers of the show have already arranged a Spears tribute episode similar to the MADONNA one from last season but reports now speculate that BRITNEY herself will appear. ENRIQUE IGLESIAS came through on his World Cup promise to water ski naked when he apparently did so in Miami last month. Grainy pictures were released of the star, whose spokesperson could not confirm or deny it was Iglesias but said he was in Miami when the pictures were taken. his own children. Andre has said the first book will be called The Strawberry Barbecue and hopes to release it soon. BRANDON FLOWERS has revealed that songs from his forthcoming album were originally intended for THE KILLERS, saying that the band is all he has ever known and it felt strange once he started as a solo act. The album is entitled Flamingo and is released this autumn. THE TING TINGS have teamed up with CALVIN HARRIS for their comeback single Hands, which will be released in October and is the first song from their second album. MARK CHAPMAN, the man who fatally shot JOHN LENNON outside his New York home in 1980, has had his sixth parole hearing postponed. Chapman is currently serving 20 years to life for the murder but YOKO ONO, LENNON’S widow, has reportedly written to the parole board opposing Chapman’s possible release.

his holiday season, the Coast has been a magnet for A-listers – finally regaining its crown as a celebrity hotspot. However, one superstar in particular has stayed loyal to Andalucía through thick and thin. Julio Iglesias returned to Málaga this summer to the delight of his fans. Nicola McGeorge caught up with him, and found out about his view on love, Spanish life and, of course (and most

importantly), Spain’s tremendous World Cup football victory. Julio Iglesias (born 23 September 1943) has sold over 200 million records worldwide in 14 languages and released 77 albums. He is one of the top 10 best-selling music artists in history. He rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s and soon became known for his romantic ballads. His success has continued as he keeps on re-inventing his music.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT Before becoming a singer, you were the goalkeeper for Real Madrid's youth team… When I was 20, I had a car accident, which left me semi-paralysed for a year and a half. It was the toughest period I’ve ever gone through, which taught me to treasure each moment of life. After the accident, I could not play football any more, but life has been very generous to me and made me discover a whole new universe: music. After being semi-paralysed how did you deal with this? My family – especially my father, who was a doctor – were my biggest support. They gave me the strength to go on and kept my hope alive, in spite of the diagnosis, which was discouraging. Music was also a great medicine; the songs I composed in those months helped me unburden myself. Why did you decide to get into music? It was not a decision, but life’s circumstances. What was a mere pastime during my hospital stay turned into a career in the end. When and how did you know you had made it? The day I won the International Festival of Benidorm I realised that music might be the new path to follow in life, so I kept composing, making plans. That was in 1968. It’s been 42 years but it feels like it all happened yesterday. I am so grateful in life for these four decades of singing. It’s a privilege to return to so many beautiful places around the world, to perform again and to notice that people haven’t forgotten you. Your career and life highlights? The main highlight of my career is feeling that the audience’s love and passion are as strong as at the very beginning. In the personal field, my wife, Miranda, and my eight children are the most important achievements. I adore them all.
You were a big supporter of Spain during the World Cup… how did it feel when Spain finally won? Oh, yes. I love football and I never miss a match with the Spanish national team or Real Madrid. I saw the final in the US, as I was on tour there. It was a great match and a historic moment for Spain. Being European champions and world champions at the same time is more than we could have ever dreamt. I don’t have a favourite player as we proved that we have a game based not on individuals but on the play of a very solid team. Spain has been producing great names in sports lately, with excellent achievements, and it makes us so proud. You have worked with many of music's top stars… who did you like working with the most? Yes, I had the honour of sharing the stage with great talents, like Frank Sinatra, Simon and Garfunkel, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Plácido Domingo, Willie Nelson, Sting, Paul Anka, Stevie Wonder and many others. I learnt a lot from all of them and they are all special to me.

Do you still enjoying touring? Definitely: the stage is my life. Name a song that changed your life… La vida sigue igual… I won my first festival with it and its lyrics are still valid. What is your definition of love? Love cannot be defined. Feelings need to be enjoyed, not described. Tell us about your Starry Night tour… This tour is taking us to the five continents and we are all very excited about it. We have already performed in South and North America, Asia, Australia, Africa and, recently, we have started the European tour in Málaga, with a show in the bullring. It’s a tour focused on the main songs of these 42 years of career, which would have not been possible without those wonderful mothers, who have transmitted their passion for music to their daughters and sons, through the decades. What I enjoy most during my performances is to see three generations together.
CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT You have achieved so much… is there anything else that you would like to accomplish? Life has been so generous to me that I could not ask for more. I wish to be healthy, keep learning as an artist, as a person, and see my little children grow up. Tell us about your time spent in Marbella… I am lucky to travel a lot and to feel comfortable wherever I go, but my roots will always be in my country. Spain is a fantastic place to have a house and in Andalucía the climate allows you to enjoy the sun and the sea almost all year long. How did it feel to be one of the few Hispanic artists to be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Grateful. Do you think you opened the door for Hispanic artists? I think it’s too much to say that I opened the door for them. If the Hispanic artists have reached such high standards, this is thanks to their hard work. I admire all of them. What inspires you? Life itself. Did you mind your children following your footsteps into the world of music? Not at all. What really matters is that they choose the career they will like most and are prepared to work and fight for. Your career spans more than four decades – very rare in the music industry… Long-lasting careers are based on hard work, high quality standards, complete dedication, passion, perseverance and continuing to learn. What does being Spanish mean to you? Spain is part of my brain and soul.

This month Society Living teams up with girl band The Scarletz for our fashion shoot – Bryony, Claire, Katiya and Tahnee from the band joined us at Buddha Beach for some fun in the sun! We also had a chat with them about the band and the music they love to perform. How did you all meet? Katiya: Claire and I have known each other for years and we wanted to put a band together so we asked friends and family if they knew anyone who would be good enough to join, and after auditioning a few people we found Tahnee and Bryony. Bryony: We always say Katiya and Claire planted the seed, I put the roots in and Tahnee is the flower on top. When did the band form? Claire: We’ve been together for two years now. What made you all want to become musicians? Tahnee: We just love it; we’ve all known since we were small that we wanted to perform. Katiya: Claire, Bryony and I have families who are musical as well so we were always around music at home. Why are you called The Scarletz? Tahnee: We like the ‘50s glam and always have red lips and nails so The Scarletz seemed like the obvious name.

How would you describe your music? Claire: Quirky pop with an apple on top. Bryony: We’re sort of a mixture of Madness and The Specials, with a bit of Chas and Dave thrown in. Who do you admire in the music industry – favourite artists? Claire: I love No Doubt, The Libertines… Tahnee: The Beatles – we’d love to be the next Beatles. What makes you different from other girl bands? Katiya: We’re real, have our own style and play with our own band. Bryony: We do it for the love of it, not because we want to be famous; we really care about what we do. Claire: We like to entertain people and have them listen to us and enjoy it.

Katiya: I’ve always performed; I went to stage school and I’m quite dramatic, so love being on stage – my family call me the drama queen. Bryony: I was doing a music degree.

6 TIPS FOR RAPID FAT LOSS Whether you have over-indulged on your holiday, had the kids off school or just couldn‘t face training in the heat, many of us let our exercise regime slip over the summer. Here is some advice to help you kick-start your routine and get you back in shape in no time at all.
1 Eat small meals at regular intervals

Rather than eating three large meals try to eat five to seven smaller meals and snacks throughout the day. This will help you regulate your hunger and provide a steady flow of energy, meaning you will not be tempted to start snacking.
Squats, lunges and press-ups from the knees are all great exercises for getting into shape. Not only this but they are also a great starting point for the inexperienced exerciser, or if you are just getting back into a routine.
4 Target the process – not the result
2 Drink water or green tea Fruit juice and fizzy drinks are laden with calories which will promote fat storage. While they will provide you with a short-term burst of energy, in the long term they will leave you feeling tired and lethargic. Staying hydrated by consuming enough water helps prevent hunger pangs and burns fat more efficiently; while consuming green tea has an added advantage of enhancing your metabolism, making you burn more fat at rest. 46

Set your goals on factors that you can control. Often clients become fixed on a number such as “lose one stone” or “fit into a size 8 dress”. However, it is important to have smaller, short-term goals to give you a regular motivation boost. Take charge of your goals by focussing on processes, good habits, regular exercise and things that you can achieve – like the performance of a certain exercise. Focussing on drinking two litres of water a day or consuming five portions of fruit a day, or from an exercise perspective going for a run every other day, is a more realistic and motivating way of setting your goals.

5 Try as many forms of exercise as possible Training in one way generally will not get the best results. Combining different types of exercise such as Pilates, running and weight training can help maximise your results. The celebrities who get the best results train in a range of methods for a number of hours a day. Generally they will credit one form of exercise but remember: they may

Varying your type of training when you start out will test your body in a number of ways, and will allow you to see what forms of exercise you enjoy and what you could fit into your routine in the long term.
How many people start a diet that is finished within four weeks? Re-focusing your goals and achieving your ideal physique is something that most people want to do but very rarely put the effort into achieving. Make the change this month and match your intentions with the right actions.

T
his has been a great summer – the best in Marbella for four or five years. The restaurants have been full, people are having a great time and the summer evenings have been simply beautiful – no wind, no humidity, warm and lovely. My friends visiting from Madrid have been delighted with the atmosphere; many of our visitors from the Middle East have said they will spend Ramadan in Marbella next year, because it’s too hot back home; and it is fantastic that Marbella is once again back in the spotlight. Having Michelle Obama here on holiday was such great news. It’s a bit like “Before Michelle Obama” and “After Michelle Obama”. In recent years the number of Americans holidaying on the Costa del Sol has dropped considerably but the visit by the First Lady is expected to have a significant impact. In fact, I was talking to people from travel agencies and they said Americans were already re-routing their holidays to Spain from such other destinations as Greece. One marketing company estimated the value of free international publicity for her visit at an incredible €800 million. We should all be thrilled about that. Marbella Town Hall’s promotional efforts have also had an influence

REAL ESTATE IMPRESARIO, INDEFATIGABLE PARTY-GOER, PATRON OF THE ARTS, GENEROUS CHARITY SUPPORTER… KRISTINA SZEKELY IS THE QUEEN OF MARBELLA SOCIETY on the town’s resurgence, especially the widely publicised presence of the mayoress, Ángeles Muñoz, at the Nasdaq in New York earlier this year, when she presided over the Closing Bell Ceremony. And, of course, here locally we in business have been doing our bit to spread the word. Last month, for example, I appeared on the national TVE magazine show España Directo three times, showing them some of the amazing properties we have in Marbella. Another huge boost for the Coast last month was the inaugural Starlite Gala, co-hosted by Antonio Banderas and Eva Longoria, at Villa Padierna, with the idea started by Sandra García San Juan and María Bravo. Michelle Obama was staying in the same hotel with her entourage but – in spite of a personal invitation by Eva Longoria – decided to rest and have a quiet dinner in Marbella. The next day she and her younger daughter, Sasha, flew to Mallorca for a protocol lunch with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía, just a short

visit for a couple of hours, then left for the States. The Starlite Gala was still very much a glamorous affair, however, with dozens of national and international celebrities supporting the cause. Apparently they raised a staggering €1.5 million for the three charities involved, which is unheard of for such an event on the Coast. Antonio Banderas was absolutely charming, oozing friendliness, and he even got his wife, Melanie Griffith, a set of earrings during the charity auction. The gala was actually a two-day event, and on the previous day guests visited the home (now a museum) where Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, for an exhibition by José María Cano. I didn’t join them for that but I made sure I didn’t miss a bullfight that evening in Marbella. It was the first time I had been to a night-time bullfight, and it was a spectacular atmosphere. At the time of the “ovation” the bullring turned off all the lights and, if we thought the bullfighter had done a good fight, we lit up the candles we had
been given at the entrance. One of them was rewarded with two ears. Another very worthy charity, the Spanish Heart Foundation, held a special event at Olivia Valere’s restaurant Babilonia, where I was honoured with the presentation of the “Corazon de Oro” (“Golden Heart”) award. Spanish radio personality Luis del Olmo received the same award in 2009 so I was thrilled to be the recipient this year. On the social scene, friends were “competing” to find a free date for their summer parties during August – there were so many! Some hosted wonderful dinner parties at their homes while others chose to celebrate in grand style at one of our magnificent restaurants. We are so lucky to have such a choice. One new one opening last month was the Bistrot des Artistes in Cascada de Camojan, where we enjoyed belly dancing and great Arabic food. Carmen Lomana, who has become quite a popular TV personality lately, including appearances on Más Que Baile (the Spanish version of Strictly Come Dancing), celebrated her birthday at the Tirana restaurant, where there was – not surprisingly – a great atmosphere for dancing the night away, with my favourite musicians present. Another thoroughly enjoyable event was the Silver Cup polo tournament in Sotogrande – so elegant yet also low-key and informal. As for business, people are buying – and showing a lot of interest for properties with a view to buying. Some British clients, for example, are seeking frontline beach homes; while Middle Eastern buyers are interested in the bigger properties. With few homes having been built lately, there will be a shortage of beautiful homes on the market, so if you are looking to sell don’t hesitate to contact us.
We have three developments for first-time owners, and we are seriously promoting them for their competitive prices, position and design quality. At Señorio de Guadalmina, beachside in San Pedro de Alcántara, prices start at €300,000; at La Corniche, in Nueva Andalucía, they are from €500,000; and at El Embrujo Banús, they start from €640,000. We stayed open at our Puerto Banús office until after midnight
last month as there were so many people in town, and we are expecting many who were here over the summer period with families to come back in September to make decisions to acquire the property they may have chosen. With the good weather we are having, I am sure September will be one of the best months for investing – as well as enjoying holidays.

orum Marbella restaurant and the adjoining Maxwell’s piano bar may only have been open a few months but I would definitely recommend them to anyone wanting delicious cuisine followed by after dinner drinks in a fantastic atmosphere. The restaurant sits proudly on Marbella’s Golden Mile with ample al fresco dining space, perfect for balmy summer evenings, and a chic indoor dining area for when the nights turn a little chilly. With a pianist performing throughout the evening on the terrace you can relax and forget the troubles of the day while enjoying a Kir Royale and looking forward to the delightful meal to come – which is exactly what we did when we dined at Forum. Friendly, attentive staff were on hand to inform us of the taste sensations that head chefs Alvaro Santiago and Carlos Blanco were preparing for us in the kitchen and we began the meal with chanquetes – a tiny fish – accompanied by foam of alioli and a lemongrass soda. The menu, which is changed regularly so that seasonal produce is always used, is creative and modern with the chefs making their own interpretation of the dishes. To experience the full and varied menu, the chefs recommended that we share a range of dishes and we were more than happy to agree. To start with we had coconut and lemongrass soup with satay of king prawns and scallops and a Mediterranean tomato salad with anchovies ice-cream – which was new to me but complemented the dish perfectly. This was followed by ravioli with foie and pine nuts topped with slices of Iberico ham and an
Idiazabal cheese sauce; sea bass with summer chop suey; and loin of lamb with tapenade and cous cous – all cooked to perfection. Each dish has obviously been meticulously thought out, being served on a differentshaped plates to show it off to its full potential – the presentation was truly beautiful. We finished the meal with a white chocolate muffin with a blackberry sorbet – the ultimate dessert for chocolate lovers like me… pure heaven. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list with many Spanish and French wines available to accompany the dishes. After dinner, guests can retire to Maxwell’s piano bar and enjoy sumptuous cocktails and listen to the amazing sounds of Paul Maxwell and the other performers. Paul has brought his talents to the bar after previous successes with The Piano Man and Marvelous Bar in Puerto Banús – and talent is exactly what he has, singing Elton John and Lionel Ritchie covers with ease and brilliance. With his range of songs and amazing piano playing, it is no wonder that people are already flocking to the bar even if they haven’t been for dinner beforehand. The bar opens at 10.30pm and continues until the early hours, with music beginning at midnight when different performers take to the piano each night, including Paul and (on the night we were there) Andrés Martinez – whose versions of She and I’ve Had The Time Of My Life were fabulous. Requests are welcome and dancing takes place every night of the week at Maxwell’s – so my advice is to head down there as soon as you can to enjoy this great bar.

he Beach House is a firm favourite of those on the Coast who enjoy a great atmosphere and sumptuous cuisine. Diners can enjoy relaxing on the beach followed by a light meal in the summer and a cosy ambience in the winter. Guests at the restaurant, located in Elviria beachside, can enjoy cocktails and lighter bites such as paninis, wraps and salads in the side bar during the day or drinks before dinner in the evening. This year the bar is bigger and better with a waiter service available on the beach, so you can enjoy delicious sushi without even getting off your sun bed. There is also new furniture in the bar, made by Nelson, a friend of The Beach House, specifically for this purpose. If you are looking for something a little more substantial then the restaurant has a great menu that changes seasonally – with a new menu introduced this month. A selection of daily specials is also available with dishes that tempt the taste buds and have your mouth watering instantly. On our latest visit we were able to sample some of the delicious dishes and enjoy the true Beach House experience. Friendly, attentive staff see to your every need without being too intrusive, and allow you time to decide on what to choose from an extensive menu that features many different dishes – I could not decide as everything sounded so appetising. Starters available on the menu include Manchego cheese, tomato and basil tartlet with Welsh rarebit granitée, beetroot and fennel salad; and sesame-seared tuna and crunchy
Asian salad with sesame, lime, soy and wasabi. Main dishes include rack of lamb with herb crust, Parisian potatoes and French beans; and pan-roasted fillet of salmon with a maple and ketcap glaze, anis-scented egg fried rice, pak choi and herb crème fraiche. We decided to sample a few of the dishes and shared the sushi plate to start with, probably my favourite cuisine at the moment and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Next time I must get a sun bed and enjoy it relaxing on that! For the main course we savoured a roast beef deli sandwich with horseradish mayonnaise, caramelised red onions, cheddar cheese, confit tomato and rocket; and the daily special of smoked haddock with black pudding mash, poached egg, asparagus and a hollandaise sauce. For dessert we shared a chocolate mousse, which was light and rich and delicious – perfect for chocolate lovers like me. The Beach House is the ideal place for a quick bite between sunbathing, a romantic meal for two by the sea listening to the waves lapping the shore at night, or a special occasion with friends and family.

GLACÉE DE PARMESANO A variant of the Vichyssoise, this soup is perfect for the summer as it is served chilled and is very easy to make. Ingredients: (serves two people) 2 potatoes 1 leek 2lt chicken stock For presentation: 150gr bacon Chives
300gr grated Parmesan cheese 30gr butter Salt and pepper to taste

Cut the potatoes and leeks, cook the butter over low heat until the potatoes are tender, then add the chicken stock and cook over medium heat for 45 minutes. Add all little cheese and melt it, pass through a fine sieve and cool. Serve with the crispy bacon (cut this small and cook in the oven until crisp), chives and croutons. Serve chilled.

LEG OF ROASTED LAMB This is a creative change to a traditional dish, which uses sweet potatoes to give greater flavour to the accompanying lamb. The dish of the day in Casamono… it will be one you cook again and again at home. Ingredients: 1 leg of lamb 4 sweet potatoes 50gr sugar (for a syrup) Black peppercorns Sichuan pepper
Salt 250gr cherry tomatoes 2 garlic cloves Butter Stock
Cook the leg of lamb on the grill and set aside. For the sweet potato mash, cook as with a normal mash. To add flavour, use the syrup (equal parts sugar and water) and two ground peppercorn, and add to the mash when cooked. To serve: cut the leg of lamb, add the mash, tomatoes and garlic confit, and sauce with the stock.

Stirring the emotions This is a clash of the titans; a place where big, heavy SUVs endowed with 500 horsepower duke it out. With sub-5.0 second 0-100km/h times, these mighty metal monsters can Hoover up most so-called performance cars at the stop lights, and corner well enough to fill their mirrors on a twisty road too. Scary stuff!

high-performance SUVs, the ML63 AMG is the one that better looks the part. While the more heavily sculpted standard ML already looks more butch than the smooth Porsche, the AMG version looks like a thug. Where the sleeker and more rounded Cayenne hides its performance light under a bushel, the AMG is like a nightclub bouncer in an Armani sports jacket. It looks the part in a way even the BMW X5M would aspire to. Its more aggressive demeanour is carried through to the way the ML63 AMG sounds and drives. Where the Cayenne’s twin-turbo V8 starts and idles relatively quietly – its V8 rumble fairly subdued even under full throttle – the ML comes alive with the loud bark shared by every car using the bespoke AMG 6,208cc quad cam V8. The aggressive V8 rumble is clearly audible every time you go into the throttle, and this is a big plus for the keen driver. In a straight drag race, the normally aspirated ML63 AMG proved capable of holding its own against the Cayenne Turbo. In the course of six standing starts, swapping drivers halfway to even things out, we found that if the two cars launched together they were neck and neck. And if one left the line first it kept the exact same lead all the way to the finish line. The fact that the Porsche and Mercedes are a generation apart in conception shows on the road, but not to the extent you would think. That said, any comments on ride and handling have to be tempered by the fact that the Porsche test car rode on 20-inch wheels, while the AMG was shod with massive 21-inch wheels, which are a cost option. You can also specify 21-inch wheels on the Porsche. Where the Porsche was clearly designed to run these large wheels from day one, the sports suspension of the ML63 AMG was adapted from the base ML, and it shows. When it was launched in 2006, the AMG was originally shod with 19-inch wheels. At facelift time last year, 20s became standard; the 21-inchers worn by our test car, available as a cost option. While the Cayenne rides serenely over bumpy surfaces and off cambers with no adverse reaction at the helm, the AMG jiggles a little here and there, and you can sometimes detect slight bump steer as the big front tyres follow the ruts in the road. Call it sporty character if you like, but it is not something most drivers would criticise unless they had driven the car back-to-back with the Cayenne. From memory, the standard 20-inch AMG wheels with 295/40R20 rubber do not exhibit such a propensity to bump steer, and the 19s fitted when the car first debuted in 2006 most certainly did not. This is a case of looks versus real world road behaviour, and it would be interesting to see if the optional 21-inch rubber on the Cayenne has a similar negative impact on its chassis and steering. 86

ON THE ROAD CAYENNE TURBO Even after a day of driving the new Cayenne Turbo, I was hard pressed to find any obvious weaknesses. In fact, one of the most outstanding things about the new Cayenne is the overall smoothness in the way it drives. From the steering to chassis, it impresses as a very refined and capable all-rounder. Yet behind that veneer of smoothness and refinement is real bite when you demand the full performance of the 4.8-litre twin-turbo motor. As well as sharing its more powerful, more economical and cleaner direct-fuelinjection V8 motors with the Panamera, the second-generation Cayenne also benefits from the shedding of 185kg over its predecessor. The result is a car that feels not just lighter and more agile on its feet but also more responsive all round, and much more finely honed. A prime example of this is in the feel of the new Servotronic power steering. The perfect weighting of the helm is no surprise coming from Porsche; nor is its natural feel and linearity of response in relation to the car’s turn in and balance through a given bend. My fingertips tell me that this power steering system is easily as linear and creamy smooth as that in any Porsche Cayman and GT3 RS included. It is simply one of the best to come with any contemporary car, period. The fact that it is the helm of a two-tonne SUV is all the more remarkable, and adds to the pleasure of driving this big car. Incidentally, the new Cayenne Turbo tips the scales at 2,170kg. Standard footwear is 8.5J x 19-inch alloys with 265/50R19 tyres, and the largest factory option is 21 inches. My test car had the middle optional of 20-inch wheels with 275/45R20 rubber. Even on these wheels and with Sport mode engaged, the car rides well. In Normal or Comfort modes, it is a limousine. Air suspension with PASM is standard on the Cayenne Turbo and an option on all other models. A first for the Cayenne is the option of PASM active damping with steel suspension, which provides better comfort at one end of the spectrum and better handling at the other. As with other Porsche models, PASM provides Comfort, Normal and Sport settings. I left the suspension in Normal mode most of the time because it is the best all round compromise. Comfort does make a very slight positive difference to the secondary ride at town speeds, at the expense of some body control when you pick up the pace on a country road. At the other extreme, Sport tightens things up nicely when you start pushing on, limiting roll and improving all round response. It is never uncomfortable like the old Cayenne was when the road turns lumpy; you just feel that the wheels and body are being controlled that much better. Overall, however, Normal does such a good job that most owners will likely w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

ON THE ROAD play with the other settings a couple of times and then just leave it alone. While all Cayenne models can have the optional PCCB ceramic brakes, the Turbo has the largest of the steel brakes, meaning 390mm front vented discs in composite format, with 358mm vented discs at the rear. The composite discs use a grey cast iron outer ring and an aluminium alloy centre cover. The larger PCCB brakes require the optional 20inch alloy wheels on the Turbo and 19 inches on other models. In both cases, 500hp and 700Nm of torque is fed to all four wheels, guaranteeing perfect traction off the line. The 0-100km/h time for the Cayenne Turbo is a brisk 4.7 seconds, with top speed pegged at 278km/h. Whether in normal driving or going for it, acceleration is strong, linear and creamy smooth. Full throttle from rest or on the fly lets you hear the 4.8 litre V8 in full battle cry, but it is a muted muscle car growl that I am sure some enthusiast owners would like to be louder. If you are looking for a harder-edged soundtrack, no doubt the aftermarket tuners will oblige. Yet this level of sound insulation is totally in keeping with the high levels of overall refinement presented by the new Cayenne. The ride is supple, tyre noise near absent and the gearbox seamless in operation. The formula has been transformed from the overtly sporty SUV that was so apparent with the first generation to something far subtler. Only the base Cayenne V6 gets a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. All other versions come with the new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox developed specifically for the Cayenne. The perfectly spaced ratios keep the twinturbo motor in a boosting frenzy when you have your right foot pinned to the carpet, and the seamless surge of acceleration only tapers off past 200km/h as the laws of aerodynamics take effect. From the front, the new car maintains the strong Cayenne identity established by its forbearer. It looks softer and less aggressive, perhaps a good thing in a world obsessed with the red herring of CO2 emissions from cars. At the rear, however, the designers lost the plot. If not for the Porsche Cayenne script on the tailgate, most people would be hard pushed to mark the new car out as a Cayenne. The amorphous lozenge taillights would be equally at home on a Japanese or Korean SUV, and are a far cry from the strong finish at the rear of the first Cayenne. However, there is no question that the new interior is a big leap forwards. Taking a leaf from the design book of the Panamera, particularly around the centre console area, the Cayenne’s dashboard is the most modern and progressive in its class. SUVs have finally closed the gap with luxury cars in interior design. The only negative is the much derided gearshift buttons on the steering wheel. A three-spoke version with proper paddle left and right paddle shifters is an option. 88

Given that the Cayenne is the family Porsche for car enthusiasts, it is important to judge it on its practical merits as well as its performance. Fold the versatile 40/20/40 split rear seat back and its 40/60 split bench, and you have a massive load area.
ML63 AMG The current ML has been around since 2005, and its AMG derivative was one of the first to get the all-new 6,208cc litre normally aspirated V8 motor a year later. In the ML63 AMG, the output numbers are 510bhp with 630Nm of torque. The ML63 AMG weighs 2,310kg, so its 5.0second 0-100km/h time is all the more astonishing. That said, gearing is always used to make up for weight, so the seven-speed 7GTronic gearbox runs a lower final drive of 3.45:1. As with all AMG cars, the top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, but you can have it delimited as a ?2,000 option. Even so, a

restricted top speed of 275km/h is still imposed because of the speed rating of the semi-off-road tyres. AMG say that the ML63 AMG is at least as quick as the heavier first generation Porsche Cayenne Turbo S around the Nurburgring. To achieve this sort of pace, the AMG car needs vast power, a superb suspension system and strong, fade-resistant brakes. AMG revalved the Airmatic air suspension units to their own specifications. With different parameters, the uprated units provide more roll resistance and faster reaction to inputs. The Adaptive Damping was also re-programmed to suit and runs a more sporting curve. Finally, they altered the geometry to improve turn-in and aid stability in fast curves. All that work has paid off because, in Comfort mode, the ML63 AMG has a suppler ride than the original Porsche Cayenne Turbo. While not quite as cosseting as a standard ML, it is still very comfortable thanks to its well-
judged air spring and active damper control. Because the Adaptive Damping resists roll so well, we mostly did not find the need to use the Sport setting even when driving quickly on fast country roads. On bumpy roads, a more compliant suspension provides better stability anyway, since a stiff car is thrown off line by bumps. As with other Mercedes Airmatic and ABC systems, ride height is dropped slightly at speed to help stability and cut drag. The optional 295/35R21 tyres on 9.5J x 21inch five-spoke alloys provide very high levels of grip, and the 40/60 front/rear torque bias means that so long as you enter a bend at reasonable speed applying power through the bend sets up a near neutral balance. Although this is a big, heavy car, it can cover ground indecently fast and deliver plenty of driver satisfaction too. It seems an anomaly to be revving a 4x4 engine to 7,000rpm in the gears, but you soon get used to the idea. That said, the big V8 has so much low-end grunt you can also just waft along. If you really gun it out of tight turns, that 60 per cent rear power bias allows you to exit with a whiff of oversteer, especially on slippery surfaces. With the powerful V8 growling up front, this is quite satisfying if you have the space to play. Big and heavy also means that a hard-charging ML63 AMG carries plenty of momentum. Eager to make their car a good all-rounder, AMG paid a lot of attention to the brakes, and huge calipers clamp massive vented discs. Since offroad vehicles carry the risk of getting small stones lodged in their brakes, the high performance calipers are of a different design from those on normal AMG cars. Looks are very important to the buyers of this type of vehicle. In this very sophisticated market segment, big is not enough, and the car has to look the part as well. The cabin is little changed from the stock ML, apart from the seats and instrument pack. That makes it contemporary, but not as up-tothe-minute as the new Cayenne’s. That said, the AMG multi-contour sports seats are covered in Nappa leather with Alcantara panels at shoulder level and provide good comfort over distance. They also hold you firmly in place in hard cornering. The gearshift stalk is on the right side of the steering column, but the AMG Speedshift version of the ubiquitous Mercedes 7G-Tronic gearbox can be controlled manually by the proper left and right paddle shifts on the steering wheel. Rear seat leg and headroom is enormous and four people will find the ML to be very comfortable cross-Continental transport. The luggage compartment is huge and aided by the optional Easy Pack system and keyoperated electric tailgate open/close device. At a practical level, the ML’s rear seat folding mechanism is from the school of thought that goes for forward hinged squabs to allow the backrests to form a totally flat loading floor. w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

CONCLUSION The original Cayenne went head on with the sporty BMW X5, but offered real off-road capability. Like the BMW, it could not match the Range Rover Sport for comfort, even if it ran rings around it in performance and handling. The new Cayenne still runs rings around any Solihull-built competitor on a racetrack or a fast sweeping road, but now plays in the Range Rover’s ballpark when it comes to comfort and refinement. Now five years old, the ML is two-thirds of the way through its life cycle. But it still feels current and is no pushover for the brand new Cayenne Turbo. In performance terms, they are pretty equal but, as you would expect, the new Porsche is lighter and has better fuel economy and emissions. Twin-turbocharging is certainly the way forward, and the next generation 5.5 litre AMG
V8 due out in late 2010 is also a bi-turbo design. This engine will be fitted to the all-new ML63 AMG due in 2012. As it stands, the new Cayenne Turbo is the pinnacle of the high performance SUV breed, combining superb straight-line performance with fine ride and handling. However, the older AMG-Mercedes exhibits more character. While the new Cayenne is super refined and smooth in every aspect, the slightly rougher edges of the ML can come across as a more endearing trait to the enthusiast. So is there a winner here? As big SUVs go, both are serious driving machines and practical family cars but, while the slick and rational Porsche appeals to the head, the more charismatic AMG does a better job of stirring the emotions.

Estepona, four kilometres from Puerto Banús, one kilometre from the beach, close to shopping amenities and in the midst of one of the Coast’s most concentrated golfing areas. The development is a secure gated complex with 24-hour security guard and with hi-tech video entry and intelligent home automation systems (domótica) available as standard in all properties, controlling, music, lights, shutters and much more – including by remote control. What is my liability as a company director? By Dimas Cuesta
Limited liability companies in Spain
I
n Spain all stock companies are considered to be limited liability companies, with S.L. and S.A. companies being the most frequent stock companies. This means that, in principle, the company’s potential liability is limited to its own assets and this is irrespective of, and distinct from, its shareholders’ and directors’ assets. This limited liability is the primary reason for a businessman to operate under these kind of companies: to limit the risk of potential failure of the business and protect their personal wealth, dwelling, car and all the assets accumulated with a whole life of hard work, to preserve their life and the life of their loved ones at the end of it. Nevertheless, regarding the liability of the directors’ assets in relation to the company’s debt, there are various exceptions arising from insolvency situations that are frequently overlooked and which could lead not only to the financial ruin of the company but also to the financial and personal ruin of the director and his or her family. This article has the intention to create awareness of this liability system among directors, with the aim of promoting preventive advice which easily avoids situations of personal liability in regards to the company’s debts. This awareness should lead directors to perform all their obligations more carefully than at the present moment and thus avoid

personal liability of the companies’ debts before it is too late. Liability of the directors The Corporate and Criminal regulations, along with the Insolvency Act 22/2003, regulates the widest and most severe liability system ever for directors in Spanish legal history, and sets forth very serious sanctions. Insolvency situations have increased dramatically in the last year and the number of sanctions and director’s liability is increasing enormously day by day. The situations of personal liability of the directors are more common than they should be, basically because of lack of insolvency practitioners specialised in this matter and the lack of diligence of the directors at the time of getting appropriate advice. Directors need to speak to a corporate lawyer or an insolvency practitioner when the company cannot generate enough revenue on its own to pay all its creditors. The directors or the partners should not have the obligation to pay the company’s debt from their own pockets as long as they fulfil all their legal obligations. Among the different obligations that will generate a personal liability if breached is the obligation to apply for voluntary administration before the Mercantile Courts (concurso voluntario) within two months of
awareness of the insolvency in the company. Failure to do so shall give way to the obligation of the director on a personal basis to pay the balance of unsatisfied debts after the liquidation. There are also other kinds of personal liabilities for directors of companies with debts in a situation of insolvency, such as infra capitalisation (articles 104 LSRL and 260 LSA) and operations of the directors against Spanish law or against the by laws of the company damaging a third party (articles 133 LSA). Along with these personal liabilities there are other common criminal liabilities related to certain situations of company insolvency (article 257 and following of Spanish Penal Code). Directors will not be released from such liability by simply dismissing and appointing a new director, as directors of the last two years may also be liable. Even “shadow directors” or “de facto” directors will be found liable, along with the formal director registered in the Mercantile Registry. In order to avoid these liabilities it is essential to obtain specialised professional advice in order to comply with all directors’ legal obligations and ensure, first, a complete discharge of liabilities of the directors of the business and therefore protect their private wealth from the company’s debts; and, second, also ensure that all the advantages of the Insolvency Law have been effectively used, and as much as possible has been done to facilitate the survival of the business. It is a fact that directors put themselves into the above-described situations very often without being aware of it. If you are the director of a company under an actual or imminent insolvency situation, this article intends to let you know that you urgently need advice on how to best discharge your liabilities with immediate effect. If you are a creditor of a company which may be in an insolvency situation, you have an urgent need to look for professional advice on how to best claim these personal liabilities from the directors and obtain full satisfaction of your credit, interests and damages arising from the breach of the obligation to pay.
