42 Inspirational and generous support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

hen Kylie Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, she showed the same stoic courage as so many other women facing this ordeal around the world. Now 42, the Australian pop singer and actress has been voted the most inspirational breast cancer star in recognition of her willingness to speak openly and candidly about dealing with the illness. In a poll of 1,000 people surveyed by British-based mastectomy-wear specialist Amoena, Kylie – who undertook a rigorous international tour last year and has just released her 11th studio album, Aphrodite – was voted ahead of other celebrities who had also suffered from breast cancer, including compatriot Olivia Newton-John and the late Linda McCartney. badly damage a woman's body confidence and self-image, and celebrities like Kylie play a vital role in raising public awareness.” Numerous other high-profile campaigners are supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout the world but it is not only about celebrities. As Amoena added, “Women also take great encouragement from seeing how well their peers cope with breast cancer." In short, support from family, friends and other women is just as important a motivating factor. With that in mind, for this special October issue we have adjusted our customary editorial schedule (moving the Beautiful Home supplement to November) and decided to “go all pink”. While Kylie is the cover face of our own campaign this month, we also feature Breast Cancer Care ambassador Lisa Snowdon as another inspiring figure. As the model and TV presenter notes, “Nearly 4,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this October alone. By holding a Pink Friday party, however small, you will help to ensure Breast Cancer Care can be there for each and every one of them.”

CULTURAL CORNER Quick clips I With a film about Facebook’s founder out this month it seems that other website founders are also having their lives chronicled. The famously private founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, will have their biographical story and meteoric rise to become two of the most powerful men on the planet told in Googled: The End of the World As We Know It. I Justin Timberlake’s new movie Friends With Benefits has a release date of July 2011. The film, which also stars Mila Kunis, is about a headhunter who recruits a magazine editor and they agree to sleep together with no strings attached, but things get complicated when the guy falls for the girl, who is now dating someone else. I Tim Burton will be keeping his love for animation going with a new Addams Family film, which is said to have no relation to previous films and TV shows. I Ray Winstone is attached to star in The Sweeney as no-nonsense policeman Jack Regan – screenwriter and director Nick Love’s big-screen adaptation of the hard-hitting 1970s show has been a long time coming. I Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy and Rupert Everett have signed on to star in Hysteria, a romantic comedy centred on the invention of the vibrator in Victorian England.

Quick Clips There are online rumours that BEYONCE has dropped her father as her manager and JAY-Z has taken his place – BEYONCE and her father have, however, denied the rumours. Speaking of JAY-Z, the star has told another magazine that he wants to get fat – not quite yet but when he retires from the music industry he wants to move with BEYONCE to a private island, smoke cigars, drink fine wines and get fat. Each to their own, I suppose. THE PUSSYCAT DOLLS will return soon as a band with a new line-up – the only original member, NICOLE SCHERZINGER, will be joined by four new girls after the original band broke up last year. KATY PERRY has reportedly been offered a job by SIMON COWELL when he launches the X Factor in America next year – Perry’s package is said to be a $340,000-a-show deal, which the singer is quite happy about. Perry did a stint as a guest judge at the Dublin auditions for the X Factor in the UK this year and that is said to have impressed Cowell enough to encourage him to give her a job. 16

Sources say the music mogul wants one massive American star, a Brit and at least one authoritative male in the American judges line-up for next year. Music icons BON JOVI are to release a greatest hits compilation album that will offer fans all the best hits of the past plus four new tracks for the future. The band have sold a staggering 120 million albums worldwide and this ultimate collection will feature 28 songs from the chart toppers. MEATLOAF has added dates to his UK tour – the American star is starting his tour in Cardiff, then moving through England with six extra dates added, and finishing

up in Glasgow. The Hang Cool tour began in North America last summer and is the first tour by the star since 2007. MICHAEL JACKSON’S former landlord is apparently suing the late star’s estate after claims he never received compensation for the $234,000 of damage incurred when Michael lived in the Las Vegas home between 2008 and 2009. The property is currently on the market for $12.8 million. DJ SAMANTHA RONSON – LINDSAY LOHAN’s former lover – could reportedly face serious fines or even jail after her bulldog Cadillac attacked Tiger, a Maltese. The situation is currently under

investigation as the bulldog recently returned from boot camp (yes, boot camp) for socialisation courses. Whatever next! AMY WINEHOUSE has asked PETE DOHERTY to move in with her so he has a base in the UK while he works there – this is a disaster waiting to happen surely as they have both previously and very publically battled drug addictions and could be bad influences on each other. ROD STEWART has said his eighth child will be his last – the star announced last month that wife PENNY LANCASTER was expecting their second baby together but has now said he doesn’t want any more. The rocker’s other children range in age from 46 (older than his current wife) to four. Singer PHIL COLLINS has observed that music has ruined his life – the star, who has been married three times, said he would have given up music if he had known it would cost him dearly in his private life. Now trying to live a quieter life, Phil is settled in Switzerland so he can

In 2005, fans throughout the world were shocked by the announcement that Kylie Minogue had been diagnosed with breast cancer. What followed was a year of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and a partial mastectomy to remove a malignant tumour. Her eagerness to return to the stage and her willingness to speak openly and honestly about her treatment, helping to raise awareness of breast cancer, has made her an inspirational icon to all women. Here Kylie talks about her new perfume, her new album and the effect that the diagnosis had on her music.

Reported by Nicola McGeorge Congratulations Kylie, studio album number 11. How does that make you feel? It is kind of unbelievable. I thought the 10th album, X, was a benchmark but this one has just been amazing. I wouldn’t care what number you called it. It’s been the most amazing experience. What was it about this album and this project that made you want to do it differently to before? The idea (to do it differently) was at the forefront of my mind on this album because I’d had a little niggle with the previous two albums. But the added reason that all of this came around was because of our dear friend Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters, who was working in this very studio, as I had started recording my album in various studios around the world. He praised Stuart (Price – executive producer) highly and loves me dearly, and basically pestered me and said, “You’ve got to do this; it’ll be so amazing!”, so I’ve got much to thank Jake for.

Do you regard this album as a return to the dance floor? Or did you never leave? Uh, it’s been described as a return to the dance floor; I don’t think I ever totally left but it is a return to form I’d say. Looking For An Angel, Cupid, Aphrodite… Do you think there’s a celestial feel to the album? There is something of a celestial feel throughout the album, definitely not on every track but I think we tapped into that on the first song we did together, Looking For An Angel. Personally, I’m always attracted to those ethereal, starry, universal ideas 20

I guess you need that cohesive sound on an album? Well, for me this was a first, to have an executive producer. It was just the best experience, and funnily enough I think it’s the most cohesive album I’ve had since the beginning of my career, back in the PWL days, where its very nature made it cohesive. There’s a lot to be said for working with different producers and trying different stuff, which has worked really well for me in the past, but I definitely wanted someone to tie this together as Stuart has done so beautifully... so that it existed as a real body of work.

This is a much lighter album… was that some sort of reaction to the darker times that you had been through? I think a lot of what I do now is, in some way, coloured by the experience I had with illness. I guess I was just feeling like expressing joy at this point. I’d written songs more about that period in my life either on or for the last album, so I didn’t feel like going through those again; this was about this moment, this time, and what a happy experience this has been for me. Speaking about a particular theme, what is your relationship with love at the moment? Jeez! That’s a massive question! A lot of people question why so many pop songs are about love, why operas are so written, why paintings are painted, why we cry during really silly commercials. Love in all its various forms challenges us all the time and I guess you could say this was a little love affair with this album. I loved coming to work. I think that feeling comes through on the album.

What was the most fun you had on the record? Shall we tell that little story? The soon to be trademarked and copyrighted “Dolly Parton Litmus Test” is a way of testing a song’s viability as a song without production. He’d get his acoustic guitar out and we’d sing. Stuart: Kylie does the best Dolly Parton impersonation there is on the planet, ever! We figured out that if that worked for any song, and we could see Dolly doing it, then on top of that we could sit down with a guitar and do it like that as well – the song was probably destined for good things. It became, as you say, a sort of litmus test for each song on the record. Subsequently it’s also gone on to be the thing that stays in your head – quite strongly as well! And it has destined Kylie to do it at every dinner party she goes to from this point onwards to the end of time. Kylie: Then as a celebration when it was my last day coming in here to wrap up a couple of things, I took it upon myself to get two of the cheapest,

gnarliest, got-nothing-to-do-with-a-natural-fibreat-all outfits – cowboy and cowgirl. One was couriered here earlier in the day with a message – I can’t remember what I wrote – but just reading it you could tell it was in “that accent y’all!” So by the time I got here later in the day I did a quick change at the entrance and walked in to find my “cowboy” with Kenny Rogers blasting out of the stereo, then I came in and punched out a good old rendition of “Yeeeeeha!” with All The Lowers, in “Dolly Parton Litmus Test” style. That was one of our most fun moments. Was this one of the most fun albums you’ve ever made then? Yep. Without a doubt!

As well as a new album you also have a new perfume? With Pink Sparkle, I wanted to create an elegant, feel-good fragrance that takes you to a wonderful place of optimism and vitality. I like to think of it as an open invitation to join me in celebrating all that is good in life. This is an inefficient method of training as it does not build a balanced physique and only gives a local fatigue to the muscle; it won’t tone the muscle (all muscles are “toned” – it’s the body fat covering them that’s the problem). Programmes should be based around squat and dead-lift movements, single leg exercises, push-ups and pull-ups (modified if necessary, depending upon fitness level). Initially mastering your body weight is vital and this should be the key for most beginners to resistance training.

Now that summer is over and we’ve all stopped worshipping the sun, we need to take a little care of our skin and look forward to the winter months and, dare I say it, Christmas! I know I’ve certainly not given my skin enough attention this summer and it’s feeling a little delicate after all of the rays I bestowed upon it, so indulging in a facial was exactly what I needed. The spa offers a great range of facials that guests can enjoy whether they are staying at the hotel or simply visiting for the day, and they enable you to revitalise your skin after the summer and prepare it for winter and the lead up to Christmas. These facials can be separate treatments or can be paired with massages, body treatments and hand and feet treatments for the ultimate pampering day. Guests can relax by the pool until they are ready for their treatment and will be collected by a therapist who offers details about the treatment of choice – each therapist is highly trained and knows what is best for the skin at different times of the year. Arlette, my therapist, knew my skin needed a little love and care so we decided on the Oxygenating Facial. After an amazing shoulder, neck and face massage Arlette exfoliated my skin and applied a mask, which was fully absorbed by the skin for extra moisturisation. When the mask is applied, it must stay on the skin so Arlette gave me wonderful foot exfoliation and massage, which every facial also

includes. The mask is then removed and using cold towels to close the pores on my face she applied a cocktail of serums that work more intensely than moisturisers. As I’m sure many other guests do, I left the spa feeling relaxed, pampered and beautiful.

Reconstruction with the patient’s own tissue is by far preferable. But every woman submitting herself to this will need to know that it involves a four to six-hour operation, including microsurgery.

Q What are the general criteria for

choosing either immediate or delayed breast reconstruction? The general criteria are the stage of disease and planned adjuvant therapies, such as chemotherapy an/or irradiation. Sometimes it also just the preference of the patient and the oncologist. At Hospital Quiron, we try to perform immediate reconstruction wherever possible, to spare women the trauma of the amputation. Immediate reconstruction means that the oncologic breast surgeon resects the breast, and the plastic surgeon reconstructs it in the same session, mostly using the patient’s own tissue.

Q What exactly does breast reconstruction involve? A It means the reconstruction, partially or

completely, of a breast following a breast cancer resection. Amputation of a breast is a very traumatic event for every woman, and the psychological trauma of amputation is comparable to losing a limb. Therefore breast reconstruction is an essential step in preserving a woman’s quality of life.

Q What are the choices in breast cancer surgery and reconstruction? A For microsurgical reconstruction with the

patient’s own tissue, the primary options are the abdomen (known as the DIEP flap) and the buttocks (I-GAP flap). In our practice, we currently perceive the DIEP flap from the abdomen to be the most popular option. I believe one of the reasons is that, in this form of reconstruction, the closure of the donor defect is very similar to an abdominoplasty. in other words, a “tummy tuck” is involved as a natural part of the operation.

Q What exactly does breast reconstruction involve? A Breast reconstruction surgery is performed

on women who have had breast cancer. After this operation a little part of the breast or the gland will be missing; this depends of the stage of the cancer and the type of oncology treatment undertaken. There are usually two methods to reconstruct the breast: either through the use of breast implants or the use of living tissue of the patient, which is taken from another part of the body. The surgeon could use a combination of methods depending on what he finds on examination. A number of factors need to be taken into account to determine the right course of action.

ask themselves before opting for breast reconstruction? At the moment it is very uncommon not to undergo a breast reconstruction, as the life expectancy for these patients has increased a lot. Most women are more than happy to undergo surgery to improve the aesthetic appearance of the breast after treatment for cancer. Perhaps one of the main questions that women tend to ask is, “How soon can I have the surgery?”

ASK THE SURGEON Q What are the genera criteria for

choosing either immediate or delayed breast reconstruction? Usually delayed reconstruction is indicated in patients who will need radiotherapy after breast cancer remission. Some patients do prefer to treat the cancer first and focus on this treatment, before considering the aesthetic elements. The reconstruction may be delayed if there is possibility of cancer in the other breast. Immediate construction has the advantage that the patient will awake from the operation with breasts and she will not have to wait for a period of time with no breasts, which can be very distressing for some women. Furthermore, everything is done in the one operation, therefore avoiding another. You also have only one recovery period instead of two.

Breast reconstruction is a large undertaking that usually takes multiple operations. Sometimes these follow-up surgeries are spread out over weeks or months. If an implant is used, the individual runs the same risks and complications as those who use them for breast enlargement but has higher rates of capsular contracture (hardening of the scar tissue around the implant) and revisional surgeries. In the case of autologous (microsurgical) breast reconstruction, women need to find a specialised centre, which is performing this kind of procedure on a regular basis, because it is a highly specialised procedure and if it is done by surgeons with a high number of cases the complication rate is significantly lower.

Q What exactly does breast

reconstruction involve? Breast reconstruction involves the recreation of the three-dimensional breast shape after a mastectomy (removal of the breast) due to breast cancer. This reconstruction can either be done at the same moment of the mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later date (delayed reconstruction). Often it

In the case of patients with significant medical co-morbidities such as diabetes, obesity or high blood pressure, or in the case of strong smokers, the surgeon may choose to perform delayed reconstruction to decrease the risk of complications. Patients expected to receive additional radiotherapy as part of their adjuvant treatment are also commonly considered for delayed autologous

want to have a breast reconstruction with their own body tissue (so called autologous reconstruction) or with prosthetic implants. In the case of autologous breast reconstruction, the plastic surgeon reconstructs the breast using tissue from other parts of the body (e.g. from the back, the abdomen, the gluteal area). The advantage of this method is that there is no foreign body in the breast and the results can be very natural; a disadvantage is that the patient faces a long operation, which leaves scars in other areas and can be prone to complications. In the case of a reconstruction with implants the new breast skin envelope is formed by the used of socalled tissue expanders, which are then changed for permanent silicone or saline implants. The advantage is a shorter operation time and no new scars; the disadvantage is the time needed for expansion (in the case of a total mastectomy) and the possible long-term complications associated with implants (e.g. encapsulation).

Q What are the options for nipple reconstruction? A The reconstruction of the nipple-areola

complex is usually delayed until after the breast shape reconstruction is completed so that the positioning can be planned precisely. The plastic surgeon can choose between different techniques of reconstructing the nipple-areolar complex, including: I Nipple-sharing technique – if one of the breasts has not been reconstructed and the nipple and areolar are sufficiently large, tissue may be harvested and transplanted to recreate a natural nipple-areolar complex on the reconstructed side. I Local flaps technique – a nipple can be created by raising a small skinsubcutaneous tissue flap in the target area and producing a raised mound of skin. To create an areola, skin can be removed around the new nipple and than replaced with a skin graft from the outer/inner labia to achieve better colour and texture match. The nipple and areolar region may then be tattooed to produce a realistic colour match with the other breast. DR KAI O. Q What exactly does breast reconstruction involve? A Breast reconstruction involves surgery to

reconstruct a breast after a mastectomy or partial breast removal. Patients who have breast cancer often undergo some form of surgery to remove the tumour. Modern treatment aims to try to preserve the breast tissue; however, in some cases it is necessary to actually remove the breast. This is called a mastectomy, of which there are two types: formal mastectomy (where the breast and skin is removed; or subcutaneous mastectomy (where the breast tissue and nipple are removed, leaving the breast skin behind). Reconstruction is aimed at replacing the lost breast tissue and this can be achieved by three techniques. The most simple technique is breast implantation. This is very similar to the techniques used by cosmetic surgeons to enhance the breast size and shape. This technique lends itself best to patients who have had a subcutaneous mastectomy and where the skin has been preserved. Reconstruction using the patient’s own tissue is used more commonly in patients who have had a formal mastectomy and skin removed. Option one is to use part of the back muscle with the fat and skin overlying it to produce a “pedicle latissimus dorsi” graft. In this technique the tissue is moved from the back and placed in the chest wall without the blood supply being disturbed. This is a very effective technique and produces good cosmetic results. In some patients it is possible to take the reconstruction graft tissue from the lower abdomen. This is called a “TRAM Flap” and many patients like this as it essentially involves a “tummy tuck” at the site where the graft is taken. This technique is more tricky though, as the blood vessels supplying the tissue are divided and the graft is “transplanted” into the chest area. The blood vessels therefore have to be rejoined to the artery and vein under the arm and this can sometimes not work. This technique is often regarded as not being suitable for women who smoke.

Q What are the questions women need

to ask themselves before opting for breast reconstruction? The loss of a breast is a very emotive experience for most women. It is therefore important that, following mastectomy, a woman allows herself enough time to come to terms with what has actually happened. Many women believe that the loss of a breast defeminizes them and this can affect mood, confidence and relationships. Therefore the decision to have reconstruction is different for each individual. Before going ahead with reconstruction I believe that women need to consider the following questions: I Do I want to undergo any more surgery? I How do I feel about myself? I How is my relationship with my partner? I Can I live as I am without a breast and am I concerned about my physical appearance?

Is my partner concerned about my physical appearance? Is my surgery affecting me psychologically? Would breast reconstruction change the answer to any of the above questions? If I have breast reconstruction, am I doing it for me or for others? Am I ready to undergo further surgery? Can I deal with a poor outcome or any complications of surgery?

Q What are the genera criteria for

choosing either immediate or delayed breast reconstruction? Generally the choice for immediate or delayed breast construction is dependent on the severity of the disease, the need for additional treatment (particularly radiotherapy, which can damage transplanted tissue) and patient choice. There is no right or wrong answer; however, in some cases the clinical condition may lead your surgeon to recommend delayed treatment. In some cases women actually prefer to be certain that the disease has been adequately treated before subjecting themselves to reconstruction. In others, the desire to wake up from surgery with the breast reconstructed and a normal bust is the dominant issue. Modern treatment regimes and early diagnosis from screening means that immediate reconstruction is becoming more popular, especially in the younger age group.

Q What are the choices in breast cancer surgery and reconstruction? A These days, as cancers are being detected

when they are very small, it is often possible to remove them without resorting to mastectomy. This operation (called lumpectomoy) involves the removal of the tumour with a margin of “normal” tissue around it. When it is very small and cannot be felt through the skin, the surgeon may ask for the tumour to be marked with a small wire hook, which is placed in the tumour under local anaesthetic just prior to the operation. In these

cases, where the surgeon is trying to avoid mastectomy, a small sample of lymph nodes from the armpit (sentinel node biopsy) will be taken, which helps the surgeon decide on what post surgical treatment is required. If the breast does need to be removed, the choices are essentially a skin sparing subcutaneous mastectomy (including nipple removal) or a simple mastectomy in which the skin and nipple are removed. In most cases lymph nodes are also removed from under the armpit; however, the extent of this depends very much on the stage of the disease. The choices of reconstruction are outlined above. Following lumpectomy there may be small changes in the contour of the breast and, if necessary, these can be corrected by fat injection or small rotational Latissimus Dorsi flaps. If a mastectomy is necessary, broadly speaking the options are implants, pedicle Latissimus Dorsi flaps or free vascularised TRAM flaps. It should be remembered that, once the diseased breast has been reconstructed, it may look different from the “normal side” and therefore in many cases women ask for cosmetic surgery to the normal breast to balance size, position and fullness.

Q What are the options for nipple reconstruction? A Broadly speaking there are four options.

Firstly, the nipple can be simply tattooed onto the breast by a suitably experienced medical tattooist. This is the least complex option and many women are happy with this. In women who want a physical “nipple” there are three further choices. Firstly, a nipple can be created by raising a special type of skin flap in the appropriate place on the breast, which is folded and sutured in place to create a raised area resembling a nipple. In these cases the skin colour is the same as the surrounding skin and therefore post-operative tattooing is necessary to get the best results. The second option is a “nipple transplant” in which part of the nipple from the normal breast is removed and transplanted onto the new reconstructed breast in a similar way to the techniques used for skin grafting. Thirdly, it is also possible to get silicone prosthetic nipples which can even be made to match the normal side. It is, however, important to be realistic about what to expect from a reconstructed nipple and, in particular, women should be aware that no matter what technique is used reconstructed nipples will not react in the same way as a normal nipple to temperature changes, emotion or touch – and will not have the same sensation as a natural nipple. his month is one of the most important dates on my annual calendar. For several years now, Mary Bloomfield and I have been attending the Breast Cancer Care fashion show and gala in London – lending support to this very admirable cause. This year, we will be at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane on 6 October for the launch of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, enjoying a stunning and inspirational show featuring “real” people as models. According to the organisers, 24 women and men will take to the catwalk this year, styled by Estee Lauder and Sassoon and showing – as they say – “you can look great despite a diagnosis of breast cancer”. During last year’s evening gala event, the celebrity supporters included Geri Halliwell, Lisa Snowdon, Paloma Faith, Gail Porter and Joe Swash. In Marbella last month the main focus was on business and I am pleased to report that business matters after the summer seem to be back to normal – and people are quite excited about this. In fact, there is a new way of doing business that is already proving to be successful. We are being more

To paraphrase a wise old saying: united we are strong; divided we are weak. Many clients having a look at the market during summer are starting to return, hopefully to buy! It’s actually a funny situation because when the market was struggling people were saying, “We’re not going to buy because prices will be going down further.” Now banks are releasing properties through us and suddenly people want to buy. I know from past experience, during previous recessions, that when people stop asking if prices are going down… that’s the turning point. The bottom line is that the Costa del Sol, and specifically Marbella, is so attractive that no one can compete in the long run. Places such as Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania might be cheaper, but here we have the infrastructure and

long-established roots. Marbella’s urban town plan has now been approved and the legal air has cleared. People are getting their confidence back, and business is active. One important trend is that it is not so much the same investors buying two or three apartments but now institutional investors looking at whole buildings with existing tenants, both locally and elsewhere in Spain. For example, we have been offered one building giving nearly an eight per cent return. The investment is under €20 million and there is a Spanish government tenant. We are also very excited about El Embrujo Banús, which we were given to sell last month. It is now owned by a bank and there are 100 per cent mortgages available for Spaniards and residents, with other buyers offered between 50 and 80 per cent. The mortgages are for a maximum of 40 years, and prices

start at €660,000 – with a choice of two, three and four-bedroom apartments as well as penthouses. On the social scene, I had a lovely couple of days in Venice, which included a gondolier race – something I have never seen before – and La Traviata at the Fenice Opera, which was rebuilt a couple of years ago and is looking at its best. Back home, I attended the inaugural flower ball at Villa Padierna, which was a big success. The fashion show was completely innovative, with long dresses made from beautiful fresh flowers… roses, hydrangeas, bougainvilleas, etc. The Spanish Women’s Open golf tournament, part of the Ladies European Tour, was being held at the same venue, Flamingos Golf, and the previous evening there was a cocktail dinner followed by flamenco singing in the hotel’s amphitheatre, where popular Spanish actress Ana Obregon was one of the guests. Another highlight last month was the launch of the La Sala bar, which is upstairs from our main office in Nueva Andalucía. It has great food and a great atmosphere, and is a good meeting place, open every day from 9am to 1am. All in all we had another good summer and now we are beginning a very interesting autumn.

he food at Suite was absolutely divine. We sampled dishes specially created for the winter months. The overall menu was a mix of Asian and oriental dishes that were tender and fresh on the palate, and unbelievably moorish. The Moroccan style décor of the restaurant suits the food exceptionally, with rich reds and oranges, and Buddhas scattered around the intimate dining area. Suite is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; dining commences from 9pm, and then from midnight it transforms into one of the most exclusive clubs on the Coast. The talented kitchen team at Suite consists of executive chef Simon Padilla, chef Elguin Rangel and sous chef Antonio Martin. To begin, we feasted on a trio of starters. The first was salmon, tuna and sea bass served in tiraditos (slices). This is a South American tradition where the fish is marinated in lime juice, making it light and extremely fresh, while the jalapeño dressing gave it an oriental twist. Secondly, we savoured the scallop ceviches. The scallops are marinated, naturally infused by the lime and coriander salsa, which in turn lightly cooks them and gives them a succulent texture. This dish was delectably decorated with flowers and pink peppercorns, and the different types of melon within the dish combined wonderfully with the peppercorns. Our third and final starter was gravlax of

salmon, served with avocados and a dill and mustard sauce – also beautifully presented. For our main meals, we were offered a choice of tuna tataki in sesame and pepper, sautéed tomato and vegetable, with sake and “kimuchi” sauce or grilled fillet steak, béarnaise sauce, chunky chips and baby vegetables. Both were served on a Himalayan salt plate. Suite are famed for being among the pioneers on the Costa del Sol in using this method for infusing flavours into meats and fish, together with MC Café. The food is cooked slightly, the salt plate is heated in the oven and the food is placed onto the salt plate, which naturally fuses through the meat, adding to the succulent taste. This Suite menu is fused throughout with Moroccan and Asian styles, a perfect match with the décor, and a special treat for the taste buds.

NEW RED ROOM With summer officially over, Suite del Mar has closed after another successful season, and the party now moves to the winter venue. Guests at the official opening party last month enjoyed champagne and canapés on the terrace while being treated to a fashion show by Nina B and Fashion Villa. To add to the entertainment there was also a fantastic performance by singer Rebecca Lander. The entertainment and hospitality proved that, even though the nights are starting to get colder, Suite can still heat up any party.

In addition to the traditional indoor scene, Suite is also introducing a new concept: the Red Room. From 9 October the Red Room will be open every Saturday night. This new concept will feature guest DJs every week, top performers and a fashion show once a month. There are also plans for themed parties in the not too distant future. With the introduction of the Red Room, Suite is offering guests two options: the traditional Moroccan Room that everyone has come to know and love; and the Red Room on Saturday nights. The Red Room has been designed by Suite’s PR team. Zoe Marmentini, the creative director, and Tara Lorimer, who heads up PR and events, have been joined by Susie K, whose vast experience of the Marbella scene will help to ensure that the Red Room is the place to party throughout the autumn and winter months. This creative trio have added new touches to the traditional Suite scene for those seeking a more diverse and edgy experience. he Polynesian’s Restaurant and Cocktail Bar infuses you with a tropical-oriental feeling the moment you walk through the door. With table space inside and out, there will always be somewhere to dine, come rain or shine. The umbrellas were the deciding factor, so we chose al fresco. The outdoor area is nicely shaded, enabling you to unwind and enjoy your meal in complete comfort, and the poolside setting gives you the impression of having an exotic country right on your doorstep. Background sounds include upbeat music and a waterfall, the ultimate relaxer. The cuisine is a continental and oriental mix, with a Polynesian’s feel throughout, enhanced by the unique wood oven – but more about that later. The Polynesian’s is open seven days a week from 1pm until 1am, with the kitchen open until midnight. There is a large selection of wines and champagnes from Spain, Italy, France and Chile, and 90 different cocktails to choose from. Happy hour is from 5pm to 7.30pm every day. My guests and I decided to share two large cocktails, “Scorpion” and “Singapore Symphony”, a mix of rums, gins and fruit juices,

creating fresh and crisp flavours. To start, we were given a selection of delectable dishes. The first, a plate of seared tuna, cooked Hawaiian style with spring onions, ginger and coriander sauce. The tuna was melt-in-themouth delicious and extremely fresh, sourced from northern Spain, which is famed for its good quality fish. Another starter we were invited to try was a selection of sushi “New Style”, including prawns, fish and salmon, served on a flat slate – all light and delectable. I made an attempt at using the chopsticks the sushi was served with, but resorted to the cutlery that was thankfully provided. The final starter we savoured was a chicken Caesar salad with Parmesan cheese and croutons, which at face value seems like any other Caesar salad, but the Polynesian’s theme runs throughout the dish – with the oriental fusion of coriander providing a strong flavour. The chef, Cuty von Tak, tries to include oriental flavours in every dish, thus ensuring that, even with the more simple “staple” menu options, everyone can savour his special touches. For our main dish, we had sirloin steak cooked in the Chinese wood-fired oven. This oven is not like any other; it is the only oven of

its kind on the Costa del Sol. The heating source, natural smoke and heat, is derived from split oak. The meats, fowl and fresh fish are suspended from hooks, and this is how the chef creates his unique and original flavours. The steak, cooked according to individual taste, was infused with smoky flavours and was tender and delicious. The chips were a different take on the norm, served more like potato crisps, and the asparagus was flavourful and gave the dish a nice splash of colour. The chef’s fresh fish of the day is also smoked in the oven, so those who don’t eat meat will not miss out on this unique flavour. For dessert, we were treated to two mouthwatering treats. A self-confessed chocoholic, I opted for the dark chocolate island with vanilla ice-cream, which was to die for, gooey and glutinous. For those who are more adventurous, the lime cream with avocado yoghurt was creamy, smooth and divine. The avocado yoghurt was a nice twist to an interesting dish, and finished off the meal perfectly. With its fusion of tropical and oriental flavours, the Polynesian’s Restaurant and Cocktail Bar is a fun and enjoyable night out for diners of all tastes.

A few weeks after Mark Webber won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for Red Bull, a Ferrari F430 won the GT2 class of the Silverstone 1,000-kilometre race, the fifth and final round of this year’s Le Mans Series. Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix, is a fast and technical track that benefits road and race cars with effective aerodynamic downforce. Today, I am driving a very special version of the new Ferrari Italia fettled by British tuner Oakley Design. If this car is any indication of the potential of the forthcoming Italia Challenge car, then Ferrari’s rivals are really going to have their work cut out. Just sitting in the paddock, the Oakley Design Italia scores 10 out of 10 for wow factor. The very first time I saw the artist’s renderings, I thought this interpretation of the best looking mid-engined Ferrari 78

since the F355 had hit the bullseye. And everyone I showed the pictures to also instantly gave their stamp of approval. It is very important for an aftermarket tuner to have a clear and strong identity. Some achieve this with their unique alloy wheel designs; others with their body styling parts as well. The Oakley Design house style is defined by a white car with a black carbon-fibre roof panel, aerodynamic parts, and their distinctive forged alloy wheels. This works even better on the Ferrari Italia than it does on the Porsche GT2 and GT3 cars that Jon Oakley made his name with. From a distance, the thin layer of carbon-fibre bonded to the Italia's roof panel gives the visual appearance of a more extensive glass house, while the smaller carbon-fibre panel on the engine cover behind this underlines the illusion.

on Oakley is a professional test and racing driver, so everything that his company sells, apart from the carbonfibre roof panel and some other small trim parts, is there for solid technical reasons. With each generation of road car, Ferrari have incorporated more and more aerodynamic features, and the 458 Italia is the current pinnacle of this work. In line with their performance philosophy Oakley Design set out to enhance this even further. To establish a datum, they did a before and after in the MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) wind tunnel. There, they established that the Italia’s outof-the-box downforce numbers were 2.555kg over the front axle and 4.503kg over the rear axle at 150mph, or 241km/h. In addition, the aerodynamic centre is quite far aft, and just in front of the engine. With near zero per cent drag, the Italia is very slippery, and has

Oakley set out to design aerodynamic components that would further improve the Italia's downforce without adding much to the car’s overall drag. Another objective was to bring the car's aerodynamic centre closer to its centre of gravity. This relationship confers better stability at speed, particularly in crosswinds. After much work on the computers and with prototype parts, the team went back to MIRA for further testing and evaluation. The data sheet revealed that the new spoiler lip boosts downforce over the front axle to 24.171kg, while the combination of the extended side sills, rear Gurney flap and longer and deeper rear diffusers increases downforce over the rear axle to 22.794kg. Total downforce is now 46.965kg, enough of an increase to make the car significantly more stable at speed, especially in crosswinds, but

not so much that it affects the suspension geometry under load. In addition, the aerodynamic centre is quite far aft, and just in front of the engine. With near zero percent drag, the Italia is very slippery, and has potentially great fuel economy when cruising on a light throttle. The external changes that Oakley make to the Italia’s engine are not radical, but they are telling, and instantly unleash another 9.3 per cent of useable output. These changes start with the plastic OE airbox, which has an internal divider so that

each cylinder bank is fed by its own intake tube aft of the rear side windows. Apparently, the moulding is very rough inside. Oakley open up the airbox and make their own new top half in carbon-fibre, increasing overall volume, removing the divider and smoothing out the lower half in the process. The re-engineered box allows the intake ram air charge to feed the intake manifolds from both sides. On the exhaust side, the factory set-up uses a four-branch manifold, catalytic converter and silencer on each bank. The silencers have valves that only open above 3,500rpm or earlier if the ECU detects 80 per cent throttle position or high load conditions. This keeps the car quiet in normal driving conditions and also enhances low-end torque. However, the way the system is designed, when the valves are closed, they force all the exhaust gases from both banks through the

complete silencer pipe work and into a 60mm diameter pipe, connected to a 35mm diameter pipe towards the end of its travel. These pipes from each silencer then meet and exit through the middle of the three exhaust outlets. On large throttle openings or high rpm, the bypass valves operate and the exhaust gases exit straight from the outer pipes. Oakley’s customers complained that the standard exhaust was too quiet, both in and out of the car, and also sometimes vibrated badly, creating unpleasant noises inside the cabin. Past experience with such valves indicated that they tended to stick or rattle over time anyway. Titanium is the favoured material for highperformance exhaust systems because it is ultra-light and corrosion-resistant, and has a deeper sonic signature than stainless steel. The Oakley titanium exhaust is a cat-back system only, so there are no changes that

would trigger an engine check light. This beautifully crafted system with its perfect seam welds deletes the bypass valves and centre section, simplifying the design of the exhaust and reducing back-pressure. There are still three exit pipes, but the centre one is only for show, and acts as an extra route for heat to escape from the engine bay. Oakley also found that the stock exhaust was extremely heavy, tipping the scales at a whopping 35kg. That is a lot of weight right at the back of the car. By reducing this to a mere 3.0kg, 1.5kg per side, the new system saves a massive 32.0kg in a critical part of the car! Couple that to the 22.3kg saving by the forged wheels, and the total weight saving is 54.3kg, equivalent to the weight of a small passenger. Car manufacturers covet their electronic data like the crown jewels, Ferrari more than most. As such, their ECU is protected by w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

software that prevents you reading and modifying the data via the OBD port. It cannot, however, guard against the oldfashioned method of removing the ECU, reading the data, modifying it and reinstalling the ECU. Having re-mapped the ECU to optimise the fuelling and ignition for the modified intake and exhaust systems, the Oakley team put the car on the dyno again and were gratified to see a significant increase in power and torque. The new numbers are 623bhp and 573Nm, up from 570bhp and 540Nm. As mentioned before, the factory bypass valves and central exhaust component do enhance low speed torque, so deleting these has resulted in a slight drop in torque below 3,000rpm. However, above this the torque instantly rises above OE level, and both power and torque then follow the shape of the factory curves, but slightly higher, all the way to the rev limiter. One of the hallmarks of the Oakley Design Porsche GT2, GT3 and Panamera conversions are the British-made Dymag two-piece wheels. These use a magnesium centre married to a carbon-fibre rim to produce one of the lightest high-performance wheels ever. Unfortunately, Dymag recently became victims of the recession, so Oakley bought the rights to their design and the tooling, and have appointed HRE in the US as their new supplier. 82

HREâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two-piece carbon-fibre rim/forged alloy centre design that has come out of this is under test, and in the interim Oakley are using their ultra-light forged alloy wheels in two sizes, 9.0J and 11.0J x 19-inch or 9.0J and 11.0J x 20-inch. Half an inch wider than the stock wheels, they place the extra width to the outside, giving a wider footprint and improving both handling and the cars visual stance. Even more significant is the lower unsprung weight conferred by these wheels. If you put the factory wheels on the scales, you will find that the front 8.5J x 20-inch wheels weigh

15.2kg each, while the 10.5J x 20-inch rears tip the scales at 15.9kg. The half-inch wider Oakley wheels weigh 10.6kg and 11.4kg, respectively, so across a set of four wheels that is a 22.2kg saving. Couple this to the standard ceramic brakes on the Italia, and you have a car with very low unsprung weight, which quantifiably helps acceleration, steering and braking. Oakley re-use the standard 235/30ZR20 and 295/35ZR20 tyres on their 20-inch wheels, and recommend the 19s for trackdays where they fit the new Pirelli Trofeo rubber in 245/35ZR19

The rolling diameter of this combination is the same as the 20s. Oakley did encounter a small problem when developing these wheels. They assumed that, like other car-makers, Ferrari would only alter the offsets of their wheels, but it turns out that the Italia has a different PCD from the F430. Thus, the first two sets of wheels made before their first Italia was delivered have now been pressed into service as dealer show wheels! Not many people are aware that EU rules on street legal trackday tyres was changed recently, as an element in their compound did not comply with new pollution laws related to manufacture and recycling. The Pirelli Trofeo is one of the new generation trackday tyres that addresses this. “The factory suspension is very good indeed,” said Jon, “so we just lowered the ride height by 15mm in front and 10mm at the rear and optimised the geometry for this. We have a full suspension kit under development for hard-core trackday junkies, but the truth is that the slightly lowered standard set-up will be perfect for 99.9 per cent of our customers.” If car enthusiasts view the Oakley Design Italia as a visual masterpiece, bike lovers will drool over the matching Ducati 1198. The UK Ducati importer saw the Oakley Italia and suggested doing a small run of white 1198 bikes with carbon-fibre parts to create a matching pair of Italian art on wheels. Oakley Design was at the CERAM test track near Paris a few days before our Silverstone session and, to everyone’s surprise, the acceleration runs to 140mph between bike and car were a dead heat! “I was not even using the launch control,” said Jon, “so the Italia’s performance was most impressive.” CERAM has a high speed banking section, and braking hard from 170mph on 15 consecutive laps did not fade the brakes. “Unlike Ferraris in the past, even the Scuderia, the ceramic brakes on the Italia are perfect,” said Jon. The Italia was wearing the same set of tyres at Silverstone and even after all this hard track work it was very obvious that tread wear was even across the big treads. That says a lot about the balance of the chassis. Some say that the Italia’s steering is a bit too quick for the chassis. I did not find that either at low speed on the road or really pressing on at track speeds. There is certainly none of the nervousness that I hated about the 348 and 360, where you feel the back end is going to overtake the front every time you turn the steering wheel. If anything, front-end grip is stupendous,

allowing you to turn in confidently and begin to throttle up in places you initially did not think you could. The extra downforce from the Oakley front spoiler lip definitely helps here in medium and especially fast bends, giving very welcome aerodynamic aided grip. The wider wheels marginally improve the steering and the rear end grip, taking up any possible lost motion in the tyre sidewalls that might be present with the narrower stock wheels. The chassis is simply stupendous. It is so well balanced and eager to please. Unlike some mid-engined Ferraris in the past, this one does not feel like it is going to turn around and bite you when you reach the limit. I tried both Sport and Race modes, and found myself enjoying exiting the slower corners with power oversteer as a matter of course, as it was so easy and controllable. Accelerating hard at 150mph, the engine feels really strong and, to be frank, even on the road w w w. s o c i e t y l i v i n g m a g a z i n e . c o m

the slight reduction in low-end torque is not really felt because the motor revs fast and freely past 3,000rpm in the blink of an eye. From that point, the torque is up on standard anyway, so while this may show up on the dyno sheet it is not an issue in real world driving. The closely stacked ratios of the twin-clutch paddle shift gearbox help here too. Coupled to the 9,000rpm redline, you have a lightening fast gearbox that keeps the engine on the boil, a flexible motor that revs to the skies and a power band to die for. The standard car has been made so quiet to meet EU drive-by regulations it is a big yawn until you open the valves on full throttle. So the much-improved soundtrack of the Oakley exhaust is another bonus. Scream the motor to the redline, brake and downshift for a corner and the electronics blip the throttle on downshifts. It makes you sound like a hero every time. The Oakley Design exhaust is not too loud per se, but sounds magnificent when driving away from you on full throttle. It has more bass profundo than the standard exhaust, and this is entirely appropriate to the car’s more purposeful appearance. The standard 458 Italia is the best Ferrari I have ever driven. It may not be as charismatic in some respects as the brutal F40 or make as nice a noise as the spectacular Enzo, but as an all-round state-of-the-art supercar, at a relatively affordable price, it is unmatched both within the prancing horse stable and against its marketplace rivals. Oakley take this well-bred racehorse and effectively put it through finishing school. As much I liked the standard Italia at first sight, I simply swooned over the Oakley version. The carbon roof gives the impression of a more extensive glasshouse, adding a futuristic element to the design without the potential 84

weight penalty. More importantly, every technical change here has been thought through and tested and is just enough to make a difference in its own specific area without upsetting the car’s overall balance. If anything, they play to the car’s strengths, improving its aero, adding to ride quality and grip, and improving its soundtrack and engine breathing. In the end, the Oakley Design Italia is such an appealing and capable take on Ferrari’s latest supercar that you have to ask if it is ever worth spending even more money on any other car that may cost twice as much and not be as well-rounded. The answer, plain and simple, from a technical or performance point of view is… no. The only reason anyone would do it is because they can.

Top European players return to La Quinta

he European Senior Tour returns to the Coast this month with the second edition of the €180,000 Benahavis Senior Masters at La Quinta Golf & Country Club from 15 to 17 October. Last year Carl Mason defeated Gordon Brand Jr in sudden-death after both had finished regulation play on seven-under 206. It was Mason’s 22nd Senior Tour title, leaving him one short of Tommy Horton’s total of 23 – a record he equalled this July in the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open. The tournament will be preceded by two pro-am days, where the amateurs will play alongside Europe’s top senior golfers including

Sam Torrance and Costantino Rocca (both pictured), Manuel Piñero (who designed the course), Ian Woosnam, Boonchu Ruangkit and defending champion Mason. In addition, an interactive golf zone will enable local children and their families to take advantage of a free introduction to golf in a relaxed and friendly environment through the SNAG coaching system (Start New At Golf). The interactive golf zone will be open from 9am each morning of the 13th and 14th at La Quinta Golf, and on the 15th and 16th October in Benahavis. SOLHEIM CUP COSTA DEL SOL BID FOR 2015 US star Cristina Kim has accepted a role as ambassador for the Costa del Sol’s bid to host the 2015 Solheim Cup. Kim, who finished joint second behind Laura Davies in the Spanish Women’s Open last month (see coverage in Society), has played in two Solheim Cups (the women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup), securing a 5-2-1 win-loss-draw record from Crooked Stick in 2005 and Rich Harvest Farms (Illinois) last year. She was presented with a gift by Francisco Amoros, director of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, to mark the occasion following second round play in the Spanish Open at the Flamingos course. As well as being a member of the US LPGA Tour, she joined the Ladies European Tour last year. Alicia Garrido Villacieros from Deporte & Business, promoter of the Spanish Women’s Open, and also involved in preparing the Solheim Cup bid submission, explained, “I think it’s very important to show the American people that the Costa del Sol is a good place to come and I think Christina Kim is a fantastic ambassador for that. “It’s time for ladies’ golf on the Costa del Sol. We start with this; we want to have more tournaments on the Ladies European Tour, and if we get the Solheim Cup that would be just fantastic. “The Costa del Sol decided to sponsor this Spanish Open and we are really glad. This is the first time that the Spanish Open has come to the Costa del Sol and the Costa del Sol really wants women’s golf. It’s a good way of promoting golf tourism here in this sunny area with so many golf courses. “We are working hard and we want to present the best option but of course there are lots of great options. I think the weather here is one of the big things we’ve got. We’ve got more than 70 courses on the Costa del Sol so we really can show that this is the best place for having the Solheim Cup: facilities, international airports, big hotels. We’ve got everything. We are now studying which golf courses will be the best for the Solheim Cup but in the end we will present the Costa del Sol with three different options.”

ANDALUCÍA VALDERRAMA MASTERS RENOWNED COURSE BACK ON TOUR SCHEDULE The Costa del Sol’s most famous golf course is back on the European Tour schedule this year, with the inaugural Andalucía Valderrama Masters from 28 to 31 October. Valderrama has not hosted a Tour event since the 21st and final Volvo Masters in 2008. This will be the second European Tour event on the Coast in 2010, following the Open de Andalucía at the Parador in March. The Volvo World Match Play Championship, held at Finca Cortesín in October-November 2009, skips a year and moves to a new date in May 2011.
