A time for optimism… and a bit of festive fun

nother year is drawing to an end and once again, for most of us, there will be the traditional balancing trick of enjoying the festive season while also avoiding too much over-indulgence - mostly of the financial variety in the current circumstances. As usual, excessive Christmas feasting can be balanced with a salutary new year regime of dieting and exercise; hangovers can be eased with a picaresque variety of remedies (from gazpacho to Bloody Marys); and even family feuds can often be ended with a conciliatory invitation to Christmas lunch. On the other hand, reconciling the desire to have a suitably cheerful and positive festive season with the need to minimise the backlash of January's crushing credit card statement is not always easy. With that in mind, this issue is packed with ideas about how to enjoy a truly festive December and choose some great gifts for family and friends - without breaking the bank.

Of course, if the year has been kind to you and the bank manager is still on firstname terms, you may want to splash out a little, perhaps with a touch of whimsy, in which case we suggest you check out our main featured article this month on celebrity jeweller Stephen Webster's new collection, “The Seven Deadly Sins”. Action film news now… and Matt Damon has revealed that the filmmakers behind The Bourne Legacy didn't tell him they were making the fourth instalment without him. Legacy writer-director Tony Gilroy, who had a hand in all three previous Bourne pictures, penned the latest movie with a new spy to replace Jason Bourne. The Bourne Legacy is due to arrive in cinemas in 2012. Newcomer Suraj Sharma will lead the cast of Ang Lee's Life Of Pi adaptation, 20th Century Fox has announced. The movie, which Lee will shoot in 3D in Taiwan and India early next year, is based on Yann Martel's Man Booker Prize-winning novel. Apparently, Lee endured more than 3,000 auditions to find the actor perfect for the role. No pressure then.

Knight and Day June Havens finds her everyday life tangled with that of a secret agent who has realised he isn't supposed to survive his latest mission. As their campaign to stay alive stretches across the globe, they soon learn that all they can count on is each other. Maybe one for the men for Christmas: action and Cameron Diaz. It seems that Michael Douglas won’t let anything keep him from acting. The Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps star, who has only recently completed his prescribed medication for throat cancer, is set to play Liberace in an upcoming biopic about his life. The film also stars Matt Damon and is currently untitled. Its expected release date will be some time in 2011. Keira Knightley and Charlize Theron are reportedly being lined up to star in competing biopics about Princess Diana. The Pathé film company wants to cast Knightley in its project about the late Princess of Wales. However, rival firm Renaissance Films is pushing ahead with a separate $30 million Diana project based on Ken Wharfe's book Diana: Closely Guarded Secret. The Renaissance project reportedly has Theron in the lead, while Ewan McGregor will play Wharfe, who served as Diana's bodyguard for eight years. The producers want to make the film as authentic as possible, and Prince Charles is rumoured to feature in a small role. Johnny Depp has recently released tantalising insights into the new Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides movie, the upcoming fourth instalment. The film is set to feature zombies, cutthroats, mermaids, and the vicious and vivacious Penélope Cruz. It has also been confirmed that it is due for release next May, will be shot in 3D and will be the first film in the series not to feature Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

Quick Clips Richard Branson and Terminator Salvation director Joseph McGinty Nichol (better known as McG) will team up to make a movie about Christopher Columbus. The project will tell the story of Columbus's exploration of the American continents using a visual style similar to 300. Branson is set to produce the movie through his Virgin Produced company alongside McG and Relativity Media. Filming for The Hangover 2 is well underway, with release expected in May 2011. The original characters from The Hangover are all reprising their roles. Mel Gibson was set to cameo as a Bangkok tattoo artist, but has been replaced by Liam Neeson. It has been reported that he was cut out of the film after cast and crew members expressed their displeasure. I never knew Gibson was so disliked in Hollywood.

Danny DeVito will voice The Lorax in the upcoming Dr. Seuss adaptation. The 3D animation centres on the stumpy character complaining about the destruction of a forest around him. Zac Efron will play a young boy, Ted, who goes in search of a character obsessed with chopping down trees. Veteran actress Betty White will play Ted's grandmother. The Office’s Ed Helms and The Hangover’s Rob Riggle will voice the film’s villains. The Lorax is due for release in March 2012.

Robert Downey Jr. may be leaving upcoming film Gravity, a sci-fi adventure set in space. Downey, who signed on for Gravity earlier this year, will possibly have to pull out of the project due to the numerous other films on his schedule, including Sherlock Holmes 2, The Avengers and Iron Man 3. The film has already suffered a number of setbacks. At one point, Angelina Jolie was attached to Gravity, but she eventually decided to leave the project. Natalie Portman replaced her, but she too left. Sandra Bullock was recently cast in the film's lead role as an astronaut who tries to return to her daughter on Earth after her space station is destroyed. Gravity is currently in pre-production, with shooting expected to begin in January.

Fans of Alan Partridge will be excited to hear that there are currently discussions of a film being brought out next year. Steve Coogan has admitted it is all in the very early stages at the moment, but he is looking forward to the prospect of a feature film about his character.

Anyone who loved 1999 comedy East is East will be pleased to hear that they are releasing a sequel, West is West. The film is set in 1975, four years after the story in the first film. Father George Khan is worried that his youngest son, Sajid, now 15, is turning his back on his Pakistani

PETA has reportedly offered to pay part of Lindsay Lohan's rehab bill if she becomes a vegan. The organisation has promised to fund up to £12,546 of the star's £31,366 bill for her threemonth stay at the Betty Ford Clinic. PETA would hand Lohan £6,273 up-front for giving up milkshakes and hamburgers while in rehab. She would receive the other £6,273 if she pledged to live a vegan lifestyle for at least one year following her release. Lohan is scheduled to leave rehab next month. After last month’s revelation of a third Men in Black film, it has been confirmed that Nicole Scherzinger will feature in Men In Black 3. Scherzinger has been offered a cameo in the movie, and has confirmed her involvement. Not to spoil the plot for everyone, but she has reported the best thing about her character is that she dies. Some would say that’s not such a successful film debut. Talk about a big spender… The budget for Nicolas Cage's Ghost Rider: The Spirit Of Vengeance has reportedly been reduced by $60 million! The Marvel sequel had initially been handed a $135 million production budget but has now seen it slashed to $75 million. Returning star Nicolas Cage has been forced to take a pay cut from $12 million to $7 million. Single Tracks JUSTIN BIEBER and KATY PERRY are collaborating with nail care company OPI for their own personalised nail polish collections. Justin is launching the One Less Lonely Girl collection featuring six shades inspired by his hit songs and personality. The Katy Perry Collection features four colours named after songs from her latest album, Teenage Dream, including a Black Shatter topcoat formula, which creates a cracked pattern when applied on top of colour. JADE EWEN, one of the girls from the Sugababes, has revealed that their new album has an “organic” sound. Their new material is going to be written by themselves and be 16

more “vocally driven” than their last LP, Sweet 7. Ewen also added that they are not working with famous producers on the record in a bid to stand out in the charts.

It appears that not all is rosy in Tinseltown, as there seems to be an epidemic of separations. It has been reported that CHRISTINA AGUILERA and her husband have gone separate ways; and COURTNEY COX and DAVID ARQUETTE have also split. STEVEN SPIELBERG is rumoured to be producing a movie about the ‘70s band the BEE GEES. Robin Gibb, who performed in the group with his twin Maurice and their older brother Barry, has hinted that

some very important people are showing interest in the proposed Bee Gees film. It is said to depict their life story in the music business and in the public eye. This Christmas could see another campaign against an X Factor Christmas number one. A Facebook campaign is championing a 1952 track by American artist JOHN CAGE entitled 4.33, which is purely four minutes and thirty-three seconds of complete silence. It seems that endorsing has been taken to the limit. JLS have put their name to a range of condoms, Just Love Safe. To be fair to them, it is all for a good cause, with all money raised being donated to their own safe sexpromoting charity The JLS Foundation, but it seems that there are only so many ways to ethically raise money and awareness, and I’m not sure this is one of them. For all you rap fans out there: JAY-Z and KANYE WEST have announced plans to release a collaborative record. West, who co-produced Jay-Z’s The Blueprint in 2001, confirmed rumours that the pair will put out a full album instead of a shorter EP, which was suggested earlier this year. So far five songs have already been put together, with an expected release of early next year. British heartthrob ROBERT PATTINSON is crossing over from film into music. The Twilight Saga star has been recording songs in the studio, and also turned down a record deal from Mr. Simon Cowell! His music is said to be acoustic and rocky so, unfortunately for some of us, there’s going to be no dance routines for us to drool over. CHARLOTTE CHURCH is back in the limelight now promoting her new album Back to Scratch. However, it’s not where you might expect. The operaturned-pop star has been promoting on shopping channel

CULTURAL CORNER QVC. The reason behind this? She saw it as the best way to promote her album without being asked about her personal life. This is certainly an alternative outlet for promotion, but Church wants people to focus on her music career and to protect her children. She will also be touring throughout the country this month. Last month saw SHAKIRA performing her latest single in a car park. The Gypsy singer made a surprise stop on her world tour after a show to perform in a parking lot. The star performed her new single Loca with two dancers on top of a car to promote her new album Sal el Sol. We all know that Christmas is upon us when the Coca-Cola advert graces our screens. This year sees Grammy Award-winning rockers TRAIN writing the latest campaign music. The band have penned Shake Up Christmas for the latest ad spots, featuring

iconic traditional Coca-Cola imagery such as Santa Claus, the Christmas caravan delivery trucks and the Coca-Cola polar bear. MICHAEL BUBLE seems like the guy to see in concert at the moment. Not only is he a great performer (and a bit of dish) but he also likes to connect to his fans. Recently, the singer invited a member of his audience to sing with him at a London concert, and has insisted that this is one of the reasons he’s had such success in the music business. SHIRLEY MANSON has confirmed that she is working on new material with her former band GARBAGE. The singer, who announced her retirement from music in 2008 in order to focus on her acting career, has claimed that the group are currently recording their first album in five years. The band’s last studio album Bleed Like Me was released in 2005, and was followed by greatest hits record Absolute Garbage in 2007. Manson had previously said she was

reconsidering a return to music after performing at the funeral of her friends’ son. That’s a little bit morbid, but whatever inspires the stars of today. The daughter of Will and Jada Pinket Smith is gearing up to release her first album. WILLOW SMITH, the nine-year-old star (no that isn’t a typo), is preparing an upbeat hiphop/R&B album that will be released in the UK early next year. Let’s hope the pint-sized star doesn’t succumb to showbiz like the rest of today’s young stars. If you were one of the lucky ones (like me!) to get your hands on TAKE THAT tickets last month, you should count your blessings. The guys sold one million tickets within 30 minutes, which was twice as much demand for tickets as MICHAEL JACKSON’S This Is It shows. There is speculation that this will be their last ever tour, meaning that it may be the last time you see the quintet perform. Fingers crossed that this rumour isn’t true.

two Jessica Simpson – Happy Christmas Lately JESSICA SIMPSON seems to have been in the press more for her weight struggles than her music. But now she’s back, with her new Christmas album Happy Christmas. The singer, who recently fronted VH1 series The Price Of Beauty, revealed the news via her Twitter page after her friend created a “winter wonderland” office for her at her Beverly Hills home. Look out for that from the beginning of this month.

three Duffy – Endlessly This is DUFFY’S second album, and has been recorded in New York and London. After the immense success of her previous album, this record will no doubt need to be a great one in order to top Rockferry. However, I have every faith that it will be. Her soulful voice will again shine through this album, and will be a fantastic Christmas present.

four Motorhead – The World is Yours The World is Yours will be MOTORHEAD’S 20th studio album. This 10-track LP stays true to their heavy metal roots and will be quintessentially British, being written and recorded in the south of the UK. They will also be touring throughout this month to promote the album, so if you don’t have tickets yet snap them up as soon as you can before they sell out.

five Bob Marley – Live Forever The original live recording of the final live performance by the legendary king of reggae, BOB MARLEY, is now being released on CD. However, understanding the energy content of the food and drink you consume, as well as knowing how effective certain forms of exercise are for you, is a good start. Imagine your body as a set of measuring scales – eat too much energy and you tip the scales and store it as fat. There is only one way to remedy this: burn more calories by increasing activity and make sensible food choices (sometimes hard over the holiday period). To get through the festive season without adding inches to your waistline, you need to balance the calories going in and out. Try these tips to help balance your body so that you don’t have to work twice as hard. Here are 12 healthy tips to help you build up to the big day…

HEALTH & FITNESS Day 1: 14 December Go out for a moderate walk for an hour. Calorie saving: 200 calories.

Day 2: 15 December Swap all juices, teas and coffees for water or green tea. Calorie saving: 300 calories.

Day 3: 16 December Perform 20 minutes of cardiovascular interval training (20 seconds at a high intensity followed by 40 seconds at an active recovery pace). You can choose any cardio-vascular exercise, such as running or cycling. Calorie saving: 300-400 calories.

Day 4: 17 December Join a gym and have a workout – a lot of gyms will even give you a free personal training session when you start. If you already have a membership why not ask for a session with a trainer to refresh your programme. Calorie saving: 500-600 calories.

Perform 20 minutes of cardiovascular interval training (20 seconds hard followed by 40 seconds easy). Go out for a moderate walk for 30 minutes and finish with a full body stretch. Calorie saving: 650 calories.

Day 12: 25 December Well done! By doing all of these things you have saved yourself over 3,000 calories, which gives you an extra day of eating so you can relax and enjoy Christmas Day. With the exercise and nutrition changes you have made over the past 12 days you are ready to enjoy yourself – all of the tips you have tried are things that you can carry into your everyday life after Christmas so you can feel fit and fabulous throughout the New Year.

always look forward eagerly to December and the lead-up to Christmas. It's a real fun month, the perfect opportunity to enjoy special moments with family and friends, but there is also another more serious and important aspect to this time of the year: thinking about those less privileged than us. Apart from the numerous private events where people generously raise funds for their favourite causes, there are also larger galas in December, including the Made in Italy with Love event at Gran Meliá Don Pepe on 3 December, in aid of the Fundación Cesare Scariolo; and Concordia's traditional San Nicolas dinner at Hotel Puente Romano on 6 December. In November, we raised funds for various local charities and the international Polio Plus campaign, during a gala dinner at La Meridiana to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the foundation of the Rotary Club of Marbella. There was a nice atmosphere, with a wonderful Cuban music group. Another charity I am involved with is Amsudan, which raises

A dinner was held in Marbella last month by the organisation and once again guests enjoyed a fantastic evening, especially while helping this very worthy cause. Where there's music and dancing I'm always happy! Another event mixing business and pleasure was the Mujeres Empresarias (women entrepreneurs) lunch held at the Escuela de Hostelería Sierra Blanca in Marbella. Outside guests can enjoy lunch at the restaurant and hotel school on Wednesdays and Thursdays, for ¤16 a head, and on this occasion, for our meeting, we had a fascinating conference given by an expert on olive oil. She explained the importance of how we use oil: for example, never overheating it more than 190º;

making sure peeled potato chips are dry before we fry them; and not using the same oil for frying any more than seven times. Also very important for business networking is a planned meeting being organised by Marbella Town Hall and various businesses, including Kristina Szekely-Sotheby's International Realty, to establish a formal association of real estate companies in Marbella. As I have stressed before, If we all stick together, united we are strong, divided we are weak. On the more social side, I attended a stunning wedding party at one of Marbella's most spectacular villas. The wedding itself had actually been held in Las Vegas the week before but they had a video which they showed us – and I felt like I was part of the marriage ceremony!

Another magnificent event was a friend's birthday party in Zafra in Extremadura. He owns two hotels in the town, Hospedería Convento de la Parra and Huerta Honda, and we were delighted to be able to stay there during the two-day celebrations, which included traditional Portuguese fado music, flamenco and charanga “street musicians”. It was a lot of fun, with friends coming from Marbella, Madrid and northern Spain, and we really had the chance to let our hair down. As for business, I think we are going to have an excellent end of year. As I noted last month, people are not just talking any more but also buying, both big and small properties. There are also some great investment opportunities. One bank, for example, is selling the credit for 1,500 properties, throughout Spain, at almost onethird the price. Those taking up this offer (it has to be a minimum investment of €1 million, and arranged before the end of the year) can choose to collect the interest, like a bank; sell the credit on to a financial institution; or execute the loan if the mortgagee fails to pay. On the Coast, we have a 10,000 square metre plot in La Zagaleta, available for less than half what it cost; and two other 6,000 square metre plots, also excellent value, all three with projects. On the whole so far in 2010 there has been an improvement on last year. Easter and summer were very good – many people had a great time and want to repeat – so that should mean an excellent 2011. Easter will be later next year, towards the end of April, so that means good weather for visitors – always a great attraction. We had a good November, reflecting the fact that in this business it is often the case that it takes a few months to work through property deals before they are finally closed and settled. I have to admit I am glad the year is nearly over. We have all worked very hard to keep everything together, and I'm looking forward to making a fresh start next year. I'm happy the way things are developing now and I am quietly confident 2011 will be better. In the meantime, I wish you all an enjoyable festive season, a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

hai Elephant on the Golden Mile serves a tantalising variety of Japanese and Thai dishes. This fusion of different styles and tastes makes every visit different and interesting; not only for you as a guest, but also for your palate, as there is the chance to savour an extensive range of dishes and delicacies. One of the great pleasures of the Thai and Japanese fusion cuisine offered by Thai Elephant is the allure on the senses: mild coconut milks mixed with spices challenge the palate and the aromas circulating the restaurant tease your appetite. Their fantastic location on the Golden Mile means the restaurant is easily accessible and leaves you no excuse not to visit. There is outdoor seating available throughout the year, and the indoor seating area allows you to witness the chefs creating the dishes you have chosen. The décor transports you to Thai and Japanese culture, with umbrellas, candles and status decorating both inside and out. Society Living chose to dine inside; not only because the weather is colder now, but also to experience the restaurant's full authenticity. Smelling the aromas circling the restaurant and watching the chef creating our dishes was an enticing experience, and as soon as our food was served we dived right in. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and the staff were extremely helpful, explaining everything to us about what each dish included and what ingredients were used. All of the ingredients at Thai Elephant are fresh and crisp. The fish is specially sourced in Andalucía, famous for its fresh local produce, and that is truly reflected in the textures of the dishes. On our particular visit, we were delighted to sample the special menus created for New Year's Eve. The table was busy with dishes that will be on the menu, so if you like what you see and read here be sure to visit Thai Elephant so if you like what you see and read here, be sure to visit Thai Elephant. To celebrate New Year with Thai Elephant, you have two set menus from which to choose. The first is €69 and includes Tom Yam Kung soup, a

range of five starters, a selection of one of two mains, dessert, a bottle of red or white wine to share between two and a complimentary glass of cava for when midnight arrives. The second menu costs €89 and includes the same as the previous one, but with an extra starter of Yakudza, a selection of sushi. Tom Yam Kung is a spicy soup with prawns and Thai spices. Don't be fooled by the name though as the spices weren't at all overpowering; they mixed perfectly with the ingredients in the soup and teased the palate. The selection of starters we were fortunate enough to sample came in abundance: Satay Kai, grilled marinated chicken, which was succulent and served with a rich peanut sauce; Poh Pia, Thai spring rolls that were crunchy and crisp; Kung Tod, prawns in a crispy batter served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce; Tod Man Maiz; and Yum Wunsen, chicken tossed in lemon juice with a Thai dressing. All dishes were delectable and full of exotic flavours. As we were sampling the €89 menu, we were also able to taste the sushi platter, which was beautifully decorated and included salmon, squid and tuna. Fused with an accompaniment of pickled ginger and wasabi, the dish was delightfully tasty and cleansed the palate ready for our main. The first choice was Pla Chu Chi: steamed hake tossed with a rich red curry and coconut milk. The dish was served with jasmine rice, which was fragrant and light. Steaming the hake made it melt-in-the mouth delicious. The other option was Ped Savoey: fried duck in a tamarin sauce – moist and succulent. Both dishes were perfect and I don't know how I would choose between them. For dessert: a mixed Thai platter full of exotic and colourful fruits, which rounded the meal off perfectly. To accompany the meal, Thai Elephant will be providing music and the usual New Year's Eve extravaganza. Their friendly service and luscious dishes will certainly start you off to a great 2011.

ast month we were thrilled at the prospect of visiting Terra Sana and savouring their mouth-watering dishes. With locations all over the Costa del Sol, Terra Sana is reliable, always serves up great food and offers a relaxed atmosphere for guests to enjoy their dining experience. Terra Sana is a favourite with young and old, men and women, for intimate dates or gatherings of friends; and you are guaranteed to run into someone you know (which is exactly what happened when we visited). For this review we visited Terra Sana Nueva Andalucía, located opposite the Casino and nestled in between various fashion boutiques. This chic area of Marbella is the perfect setting for Terra Sana, as its stylish status is mirrored perfectly in the surrounding “neighbours”. Terra Sana has established itself as a familiar restaurant among Spaniards and expats alike – and rightly so. Describing it as familiar in no way means boring! Half-Spanish, half-French head chef Adriano Castagnet conjures up different specials every day, and on our particular visit a few of the

special dishes we savoured had actually sold out that afternoon, so we were extremely lucky to be given the opportunity to try them. With Zuma Restaurant in London as a previous employer, Adriano strives to continually create new, fresh dishes daily. Managers Richard Svensson (Nueva Andalucia and Mik Sweeney (Golden Mile) also add their own characteristic touch. Mik is all about good music and good food; and Richard is passionate about good service. If asked to describe Terra Sana’a cuisine, the best way to encompass all the flavours and dishes on the delectable menu would be “Mediterranean and health fusion”. Vibrant colours and clear flavours are recurrently present on this inspiring menu. The new vision of Terra Sana is to create innovative, organic dishes daily, while ensuring it is still in keeping with the core values that we all know and love. In addition to creative dishes and second-tonone service, Terra Sana also offers cooking classes for the public. There are three types of classes: one for adults who want to create fresh, healthy food; another for children who want to have fun and experiment in the kitchen; and the VIP, starting in 2011, Cooking Club, where chefs from the best restaurants in London are brought to Terra Sana every month. The idea here is to form a bridge between fashionable London and stylish Marbella.

Together with these cooking classes, Terra Sana also offers live music to accompany your meal. The Golden Mile establishment has live soulful music on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays to coincide with its new Sunday roast offerings from 12pm to 5pm. On this occasion, whilst digesting the delicious menu and trying to decide what to order, we were served Romanian-style smoked aubergine dip with crispy tortilla chips, which was perfect to keep any hunger pangs at bay; as well as a selection of vibrant juices and smoothies. Shortly after we were served our starters, which the chef had selected especially for us. To begin, we were served a vast assortment of starters, each different from its predecessor. Firstly, Swedish meatballs with pickles and berries were devoured enthusiastically, and we all agreed that the combination of the sweetness of the berries and the savoury tastes of the meatballs and the creamy sauce worked together perfectly. Secondly, mirin-glazed chicken wings with salt and lime were the perfect accompaniment; the mix of sticky, sweet and salty was absolutely delicious. Next was a mixed tempura of prawns, squid, avocado and onions, complemented with a lime aioli, which was deliciously light and fresh. Our final starter was tuna tataki with cherries, broccoli and an assorted sauce. The tuna was moist, soft and succulent, and left the palate wanting more. Our selection of mains included sirloin beef served on basmati rice with a rich soy sauce, which was tender and juicy. Secondly, tom-yum muscles swimming in coconut milk and ginger, lemongrass and coriander. Next we dined on a few of Terra Sana’s trusty favourites: the “infamous” Terra Sana salad made with avocado,

feta cheese, dates and a summer herb Terra Sana Nueva Andalucia dressing, all the freshest ingredients; and the “Original Californian Chicken Wrap”, which was accompanied with potato wedges. The varied ingredients used in both dishes ensured that the different textures teased the palate. If that wasn’t enough, two desserts were then brought to our table: a mouth-watering “Mamma’s Carrot Cake” and a light “NYC-style” cheesecake. The carrot cake was moist and rich and the seasonal berry compote that accompanied the lemon cheesecake offered a lovely marriage of flavours. Both desserts were beautifully presented. From our visit, it was obvious that the attentive staff have a passion for the food they are serving and the chefs put their heart and soul into creating every dish. If you are looking for something different this Christmas, why not visit Terra Sana in Nueva Andalucía or on the Golden Mile. They have a selection of fourcourse Christmas and New Years menus, starting from ?22 per person, and all include a complimentary glass of wine. ast month my partner and I had the fantastic opportunity of enjoying a romantic getaway at the renowned fivestar Finca Cortesín, nestled in idyllic countryside between Estepona and Sotogrande. Full of excitement and anticipation we headed from Marbella in the direction of Sotogrande, eventually turning off the N340 coastal highway towards Casares where, after a short drive inland, we found Finca Cortesín without any difficulty. Located in beautiful gardens on a championship golf course and surrounded by 215 hectares of picturesque countryside, this exclusive resort offers the choice of staying in the grandeur of the hotel or in an enchanting villa or luxurious apartment, with superb fine dining experiences, a spa and wellness centre and, of course, golf. We settled down in the luscious sofas in the bar area, where we were introduced to a world of exquisite aperitifs by Al, the knowledgeable and friendly barman. He recommended that we start our evening with a lovely sherry martini, which had a nice Andalucian touch to it, and a Kyoto martini made with yuzu liqueur, sake and vodka (and a few secret ingredients thrown in). They went down a treat! Finca Cortesín offers various dining options including Schilo with its auteur cuisine; El Jardín de Victor with its specialised “garden of Mediterranean” cuisine; and the Don Giovanni Italian restaurant. On this occasion, we chose El Jardín, which had recently teamed up with Victor (from Victor's in Guadalmina) and was focusing on new menu additions featuring quality produce and the concept of traditional Andalucian fine dining. Head chef Paco Corales has been cooking Mediterranean specialities for the last 25 years, and food and beverage manager Luis Ureña is an expert on Spanish wine. We started our dining experience with pistachio cold cream consisting of sautéed pineapple and mango topped with prawn carpaccio, and a carrot crackling twist (gorgeous) accompanied by a glass of rosé cava. This was followed by a fresh seafood platter of langoustines, Dublin Bay prawns

and shrimps - all simple, fresh, high-quality local produce with a superb taste. We also tried some beautiful artichokes stuffed with meat and topped with a slice of foie gras which were delicious. For mains we opted for a classic oxtail (chef's style) and oven-baked red-banded sea bream, exclusive to the Andalucian region. The oxtail - a house speciality - was superb; and the sea bream was fresh, and beautifully flavoured and presented. Accompanying our main course was a Pago de Cirsus chardonnay, a beautiful Spanish Navarra wine; and a 2006 Los Aguilares red from our very own Ronda area - a tempranillo cabernet sauvignon (quite heavy but delicious).

For dessert we had a crème brûlée, a chocolate sponge cake with a hot melted centre and a raspberry coulis, and assorted pastries. The dessert wine was a fabulous sweet Par Vino de Naranja from Huelva. The dining atmosphere is relaxed elegance, and once again the staff made us feel very special. Then it was back to the bar where Al treated us to some spectacular tricks, doing a “Jesus in reverse” by turning wine into water right in front of our eyes! We finished off the evening with a classic Alexander with fresh nutmeg sprinkles and a raspberry mojito. After a good night's sleep in our super king-sized bed with crisp sheets and duck-down duvet, we had a bubble bath in our room and headed to breakfast, where we were served a warm home-made bakery basket of country bread, croissants, Danish pastries, brioche and toast with preserves, fresh cheese, jamón ibérico and a fruit salad. There was also a choice of various hot dishes - we opted for Eggs Benedict and scrambled eggs with salmon (the diet starts now!). For the privileged few, various properties are available for sale in this beautiful resort. Then you would never have to leave! he choice of dedicated trackday cars is expanding all the time, and thinly disguised road-legal track machines from the Radical and KTM XBow to the Gumpert Apollo offer hardcore track junkies a true racecar experience at different price points. However, not everyone wants a second or third car that is total impractical for normal road use, so we lined up three seriously quick road cars at the Ascari Race Resort to see just how close they come to giving you a racecar experience. 74

The Noble M600 and Porsche GT3 RS are genuine practical supercars, while the Caterham Superlight R500, with a supercar power-to-weight ratio, is a minimalist machine whose basic design has been honed to a fine point over decades of development from the original Lotus Seven. Then we threw a wild card into the mix in the form of a Ferrari F430 Challenge, the race version of the F430 road car. As this has just been made obsolete by the 2011 season Ferrari Italia Challenge car, there will be a few F430 Challenge cars floating

around looking for homes. Wealthy enthusiasts often find ex-racecars like the F430 Challenge, a Porsche Carrera Cup or a GT3 RSR appealing as trackday cars. Unlike the three road-legal machines, however, these have to be transported to and from the circuit on a trailer.

ON THE ROAD PORSCHE GT3 RS While the second generation GT3 that debuted in 2009 stood out for its power, torque, chassis dynamics and all-round competence, it left me emotionally unmoved. On reflection, I realised that, while its dynamic excellence impressed at an empirical level, this car lacked the je ne sais quoi that would make me want to put one in my garage. The GT3 RS, on the other hand, has all the missing ingredients and more. Not only does it take the strengths of the GT3 to the next level, but it throws a large measure of the subjective excitement I was looking for into the mix as well. Its ability to engage its driver with the finite tactile, aural and seat-of-the-pants inputs that seem hidden behind a thin veil in the normal GT3 is nothing short of spellbinding. With a single mass flywheel, more aggressive ignition timing and a raft of changes to the suspension, such as wider tracks and wider bodywork, the RS is as different from the GT3 as the RSR 2.8 was from its Carrera RS 2.7 sibling in 1973. The resulting heightened level of dialogue between car and driver bores straight into your synapses, bypassing rational thought to establish the instinctive emotional connection that makes the difference between a good sportscar and a great one. It fully justifies use of the hackneyed phrase, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. There is real synergy at work here. The RS feels more communicative and alive than any other current production 911, even approaching the realm of the Carrera GT in areas such as throttle response, and the way that power bursts from its motor rather than merely developing with engine speed. The irony is that, despite its greater front and rear track widths, it feels more nimble and agile than the GT3, and responds more deftly to inputs at the helm. The 20kg weight reduction over its sibling is significant, but not that significant at 1,370kg. But when you consider that, unlike some rivals, Porsche measure this with all fluids and half a tank of fuel on board then it is light by new car standards. On track, I could not help but think how much the RS reminded me of a very well sorted racecar, sans the discomfort. From 0100km/h takes 4.0 seconds and top speed is 310km/h. But, while this is important, it is secondary to the car’s responses and handling on both road and track. Every time I drive a GT3 Cup car, that feeling of heightened and much more urgent response in the throttle, steering and engine note, and the crisper and more tactile feedback from all the controls, is immediately apparent. It is like being wired directly to the soul of the car. The same is true of the GT3 RS, albeit at a more civilised road car level. Using hi-fi amplifier analogy, the non-linear character of some volume controls means that you have to turn the knob beyond a certain point before the sound really blossoms.

The RS has an immediacy that feels like the big dial has been turned up a couple of clicks to the point where the soundstage opens up and everything snaps into focus. The result is revelatory. Boasting 444bhp at 7,600rpm and 430Nm at 6,750rpm, the blue-printed 3.8 litre flat-six motor revs much faster and with far more vigour than the GT3’s. The power literally explodes from the motor rather than merely building, and carries on right to the cutout, underpinned by that spine-tingling exhaust note. It is an experience that gets you going even in normal driving, when you cannot exploit the chassis and aero, the other two areas of big improvement. Here, the GT3 RS turned in crisply to the slower corners, exhibiting the pointy and grippy front end I remembered. It also felt tremendously stable in the faster bends, where you could feel the aero working to your advantage. With nearly double the downforce at speed of the previous year’s RS, its ability in

high-speed bends is a big eye opener. The second generation GT3 RS generates 170kg of total downforce at 300km/h, nearly 70 per cent more than the previous model. This makes a huge difference to high-speed stability, both in a straight line and when cornering, especially in long sweepers. That extra stability and the relatively benign chassis give you a much bigger confidence window in fast bends. After a couple of fast laps, it is apparent that the Michelin Cup trackday tyre-shod Porsche has better traction out of slow bends than the Ferrari on slicks, and interestingly, although it is a road car, the GT3 RS is ultimately not much slower on track than the high-maintenance F430 Challenge racer. It delivers much of the thrills with none of the pain. I first drove the GT3 RS on a track in Germany back in March 2010. My second encounter at Ascari simply endorsed my original impressions. NOBLE M600 Six hundred and fifty horsepower. Say it slowly and deliberately, and the three seconds it takes to vocalise this number is enough for the brain to register that it is not an extraordinarily large output by today’s big league supercar standards. However, when you learn that the Noble M600 weighs just 1,230kg, and therefore has a power-to-weight ratio of 520bhp per tonne, the true significance of its horsepower number becomes clear. Eight point nine (8.9) seconds. That is precisely how long it takes for the Noble M600 to go from rest to 120mph (192km/h). It is a time that most current supercars would be proud to own for the 0-100mph (160km/h) sprint, which in fact the Ferrari F430 does. Performance numbers are one thing. Few supercar owners ever wring their cars out, even on a track. What is more important is the real world driving experience; the grin factor if you like. This is where the back-to-basics philosophy of the Noble M600 will either attract or intimidate. In a world full of increasingly intrusive electronic nanny devices, the Noble has no ABS, no ESP and no brake servo. And when you turn its traction control off it really is OFF. So when you write out the cheque for £200,000 you are signing up for an authentic analogue driving experience. The heart of the Noble M600 is the Yamahadeveloped 4,439cc DOHC 60-degree V8. Two Garrett turbochargers on bespoke manifolds boost at a modest 1.0 bar, and the motor makes 650bhp at 6,800rpm with 818Nm (604 lb-ft) of torque at 3,800rpm. A pair of massive intercoolers keeps intake temperatures down. 76

The motor is mated to the ubiquitous Italian-made Graziano six-speed manual gearbox, which has seen service in several lowvolume supercars. I was surprised to learn that the car does not have a limited slip differential. The accelerator travel is very precise so you can meter in exactly the amount of squirt required, which makes it a very easy car to balance into and through corners. On the back straight at Ascari, with the motor on full noise in Race mode, the forward thrust was incredible. Thanks to the car’s low weight and the absence of discernible turbo lag, power delivery is instant, linear and a million light years from the sudden and peaky kind of on-off arrival associated with turbocharged engines of yore. Some equally powerful but heavier cars seem to pause while they inhale and fill their deep lungs before beginning their battle with inertia. Not the Noble. With plenty of torque and relatively modest mass to move, you can feel it accelerating the second you dip into the throttle travel. The counterpoint to the Noble M600’s ability to sling you up the road at warp speed is its docility and tractability. If you don’t want to extract every last ounce of performance from one of the fastest supercars on the planet, you can actually drive it to the shops. The deep NASCAR grade V8 rumble from the motor really turns heads when you accelerate away on full throttle. Its exhaust note does not just hint at big power, it clubs you over the head with it. The perfectly honed power steering allows you to translate your desired direction of travel to the front wheels instinctively. The nose

ON THE ROAD turns in accurately on cue and the rest of the car follows through all-of-a-piece. There is no hint of bump steer or the nervousness that over-assistance can bring, so the engineers have done a fine job here. Not only do the massive Alcon race-bred brakes lack ABS, they also lack a servo. Instead, a race-style twin master cylinder looks after leverage. If you are not used to such brakes, they can cause a moment of panic the first time you approach a bend at speed and find that the pedal requires a much greater shove than you anticipated. You soon learn that you can lean on them pretty hard without locking up, and they are progressive, full of feel and very effective. As a pure driving experience, it would not be a stretch to describe the Noble as a bigger, heavier and massively more powerful Lotus Exige. The steroids they use in Barwell, Leicestershire, are obviously very effective!

CATERHAM SUPERLIGHT R500 Even an ultra supercar like the Pagani Zonda F still weighs 1,250kg, and the Lotus Elise has grown over 700kg, so at 506kg the Caterham Superlight R500 really does what the painted script says on its aluminium bodywork. With 263bhp to propel just 506kg (516kg with the sequential gearbox option), the R500’s powerto-weight ratio of 520bhp/tonne approximates that of the mighty Bugatti Veyron. Of course, other factors such as gearing, aerodynamics and rev limits come into play so, although the little Caterham rockets to 100km/h in 2.95 seconds, it runs out of steam at just 240km/h, 160km/h short of the Bugatti’s Vmax. However, on a racetrack, especially a tight and twisty one, the nearly four times heavier Bugatti would be out of its depth. Here, and on challenging country roads, the Caterham is in its element.

Getting into this rocket-powered roller skate is an art in itself. You climb in over the side, avoiding the hot exhaust if the car has just been driven, step on the seat and then slide into the foot well. It really feels like you are strapping the car on rather than getting into it! Even someone of average size will find the Caterham’s cockpit a tight fit; once in place, you hold the small steering wheel with both elbows bent, and one spilling out over the side. And, if you have a passenger, you had better be on good terms as you will share the drive experience in very close proximity. A significant option on the Superlight R500 is the sequential gearshift, which makes a huge amount of sense if you are intent on track attack times. Not only will this help you to shave your lap times, but it will also ensure that you never mis-shift and buzz the motor. From the first corner, your senses tell you that the Caterham operates to a different set of physical rules from the other cars here. For a start, it is so much narrower that you can take much straighter lines through bends, allowing you to carry more relative speed. The steering is absolutely brilliant in terms of feel and feedback, and describes exactly what is going on at the front wheels. I had fears that the small steering wheel and 1.93:1 ratio quick rack would make the car twitchy but, because the chassis is set up perfectly, it feels all-of-apiece and totally secure both in slow and fast bends alike. The last Caterham I drove on a track was on normal road tyres and, as it had far more handing than grip, I ended up drifting it through all the bends. The Avon CR500 trackday tyres on 6J and 8J x 13-inch alloys, plus the lower weight and uprated suspension of the R500, put it into a completely different league, and it took me a couple of laps to find out just where its significantly higher levels of mechanical grip ran out.

Although the other three cars are light by road car standards, you always feel you are managing understeer, oversteer and weight transfer with them. In contrast, the Caterham simply goes where you point it, and is by far the most accurate weapon here when it comes to clipping an apex within an inch of where you want to go, each time, every time.

The sequential gearshift is brilliant and totally in keeping with the immediacy of the car’s character. You still have to use the clutch for each shift but, with no across the gate movements, speed and accuracy of ratio change is fast, precise and consistent. Perhaps the only disappointing aspect of the R500 is the rather flat soundtrack of its tuned 2.0 litre four-cylinder Cosworth Ford Duratec motor. While it delivers a healthy 263bhp at 8,500rpm and 240Nm of torque at 7,200rpm, and it is a pretty lusty unit, it is best described as effective rather than charismatic. However, even the lack of aural brilliance does not stop you from coming back from a few hot laps in the R500 with a grin on your face as broad as the proverbial Cheshire cats. Being open, the Caterham brings you that much closer to the elements. This al fresco exposure, compact size, low weight and responsive controls collectively deliver a visceral experience that makes the other three cars feel a level or two removed from the proceedings. You really know you are alive when you drive this car.

FERRARI F430 CHALLENGE Of the four cars here, the Ferrari is the only one that is not road-legal. A former UK Challenger series car, it can now only be used as a rich man’s toy for trackdays. Because of the way the series rules were framed, the engine of this car is effectively the same as the road car, its 4,305cc, quad-cam V8 producing 483bhp at 8,500rpm, with 465Nm of torque at 5,250rpm. Like all race derivatives of road cars, the F430 Challenge has its weight reduced to 1,225kg by a cockpit strip out, so there are no carpets or sound-proofing. The interior is dominated by the full roll cage, snug racing seats, five-point harnesses and a detachable race steering wheel, with the analogue instruments replaced by a digital display. With no “manettino” or start button on the detachable race steering wheel, the car is set in Race mode only, with the road-going F430’s traction control and stability systems permanently disengaged, and only ABS and ASR left active. The E-differential is replaced with a mechanical limited slip differential, and the coil-over suspension has much stiffer race springs and dampers. Getting in and out of the Challenge car is your first baptism of fire. Clearing the side bars 78

of the roll cage involves putting both feet on the seat, holding on to the top bar and climbing in. Once in, you find that the already compact cabin is made even more so by the roll cage. Your race helmet is almost permanently in contact with the roll cage, and I have decided to retain the resultant marks on my helmet as a badge of honour! With less weight to pull, the V8 revs up a fraction faster than the road car, and the lack of sound-proofing gives you the full dose of soundtrack right behind your head. Revving to the redline involves the whole gamut of sounds from the baritone low end to the primal scream of the flat-lane crank V8 in full battle cry. The six-speed paddle shift operated gearbox shifts ratios in 180ms, which is pretty much instantaneously. It also blips the throttle perfectly on downshifts. However, the over-square V8 motor does its best work over 4,000rpm, and I had to use second gear to obtain convincing acceleration out of the two slowest corners at Ascari, where the other three cars were happy in third. A very low car in standard form, made lower by its race suspension set-up, the F430 Challenge initially feels more like a racing car than the more upright GT3 RS.

Like the Porsche, the Challenge is very sensitive to the state of its tyres. When they are on their way out, the stiff front end understeers noticeably in tighter bends; the mechanical limited-slip differential that replaces the E-Diff of the road car contributing to this. However, when the tyres are doing their job and the suspension is properly dialled in, the Ferrari’s handling is a thing of beauty. Unlike the F360 Challenge car, which was very snappy on the limit, the F430 Challenge lets go progressively, and trail braking to rotate the tail into a bend holds no big peril if you know what you are doing. The F430’s underbody aero works a treat, more so with the lower Challenge car, which better utilises the ground effect to keep it anchored in fast bends. In fact, in medium and fast bends, the understeer I experienced in the slower turns because of the worn slicks was counterbalanced to some extent by the aero. The F430 Challenge driving experience is best described as intense. The only pure racecar here, it bombards your senses with furious sounds and sensations from the moment you pull out of the pit lane. Doing a 10-lap race in this car would be both incredible and emotionally draining.

What business were you involved in before Triple A? Before I was the president of Triple A, I actually volunteered here for four years. That's where I discovered my passion for looking after helpless animals. It's impossible to volunteer here and not be affected by the place and the vulnerable animals. How did Triple A begin? Triple A is a charity organisation and began 17 years ago. It was created to care for cats and dogs that had sadly been abandoned on the street, or that owners didn't want any more. The premises of Triple A were donated to us by Marbella town hall, which we are very thankful for; and just

recently the mayoress of Marbella (Ángeles Muñoz) visited Triple A and pledged to donate €10,000 to aid in the care of the animals. Why do you think abandoned animals are so widely seen on the Costa del Sol? People can no longer afford to take care of their pets, and so they have to bring them to us; but realistically we don't have the resources to take them all on. We never say no to an animal but it's almost a catch 22 situation: we can't afford to look after the number of animals that are brought here, but if we don't who will? Also, some animals are lost and found on the roadside; they take up a proportion of our resources at Triple A. It's so sad because the animals are helpless and rely on an owner to look after them, so when they are abandoned they are completely alone, and rely on our undying support and care. However, unfortunately there is only so much we can do. There is only so much space and funds that we have access to, but we never say no to animals brought to us. As soon as an animal is brought here, we microchip them so that we can monitor their progress and so we know how many animals we have at the centre. What implication has the recession had on animals being abandoned? Due to the recession, people are having to relocate and can't afford to take their pets with

them. People bring them here for us to take on; at the moment we have about 320 dogs. Realistically we can't look after 100 dogs efficiently - there is just not enough space or money - but if we turn people and their animals away the animals are just left on the street. There has been a 30 per cent rise in animals brought here since the recession, so it has definitely had a big effect on us. It's not only foreign residents who are leaving animals: there has been a rise in Spanish people who are having to downsize to apartments that don't allow animals.

Our Associate Editor spent a long time raising funds for a certain animal charity down here, only for the main fund-raisers of the charity to keep the money and not pass it on. How common is this problem of people raising money for charities but not actually passing the funds on? Thankfully this is not a common problem. We did have an instance where money was raised for a Triple A calendar in December and the money was finally handed over some six months later, but fortunately this was an isolated incident. What advice can you give to people relocating to encourage them not to abandon their animals? Well there is no law in Spain that prevents owners from abandoning their animals, so

people just leave them with us to look after. My advice would be to think very carefully before owning a pet. I know that there are unforeseen events such as the recession, which is out of our control, but it is important to remember that animals are a big responsibility. Micro chipping is also vital because, if the animals are lost, they can be returned to their owners. There have been reports of the owners of Parque Animal in Torremolinos being arrested for alleged animal cruelty. How do these reports make you feel? Absolutely disgusted. I don't know how people have the nerve to put a helpless animal down. There is no need for it, and it saddens me to think of all the vulnerable animals that were sacrificed for no just reason, even if budgetary considerations - that is, lack of sufficient funding - played their part in the decision. How can people help? Donations are extremely important; the more money we receive, the more animals we can help. We ideally need over €18,000 every month just to break even; food for the animals is approximately €2,000 a month, so it is imperative that we continually receive donations from the public. Even €10 a month will make a difference here. More money means more kennels, and more kennels means a better life for the dogs. Also physical bodies working here are essential. We currently only have 12 full-time staff, which is far from enough to cope with the demand of animals that are brought to us daily. For every two dogs that are adopted, three new animals are brought to us. We often hold events to raise awareness and money, which is a significant help. From our recent fund-raising event at Villa Tiberio, a Belgian family kindly donated €10,000 to us, which is fantastic and will really help us. Every Saturday, we also have volunteers who donate their time to taking money tins down to Puerto Banús, which is another way to promote ourselves and to raise more money. How important is it that people help? I cannot stress how vital it is that people help us. Every month, we take on 100 new dogs and 50 new cats, so our organisation is growing every single day.

Where did the idea for The White Briefs come from? The White Briefs have now been trading for over a year. Creator and designer Peter Simonsson wanted to establish a brand that designed basic and easy to wear garments, but with a difference. He noticed that we were swaying more towards caring for our world, and wanted to create a clothing line that reflected this.

Why do you think that organic and environmentally friendly clothing is so important? Our society is more aware of the effect we are having on our planet. Therefore, we think carefully about the choices we make and the outcome that it will have on the environment, and the future generations. We only have one planet, and I think society is more aware of this, so the natural progression was to create a clothing line in an ecological way.

What is The White Briefs vision? The main vision of The White Briefs is to be ecological and environmentally friendly. The public are now more inclined to want to purchase organic foods, so why not follow suit with your clothes? The concept is fantastic; it suits the Spanish lifestyle and climate perfectly because it can be worn in a variety of ways. It can be worn as loungewear around the home, as beachwear in the summer, and there is the possibility to combine with other garments. It can be worn as an accessory, for example under a shirt, or as a staple piece in an outfit. How are the clothes organically designed and produced? Everything is organic and eco friendly within The White Briefs. The organic cotton is certified, there are no fertilisers used throughout the whole process, everything is made in Europe so there isn't extensive or costly transportationâ&#x20AC;Ś even the boxes that the garments are sold in are made of recycled paper. The White Briefs want to reinvent retail; not only creating clothes that care for the environment, but also to change the way that consumers think. 82

What would you describe The White Briefs as?The main idea was to create laidback necessities that could be worn in many ways, but that are also kind to our environment. It has fantastic potential because it is one of a kind. There is nothing in circulation at the moment to compete with it; it has it's own niche market. The White Briefs is not only a clothing line; it is also a brand and a lifestyle choice. Customers choose to purchase garments made with organic cotton, which is a conscious effort to buy into a luxurious line. How successful has The White Briefs been as a brand? The White Briefs has been extremely successful. I started out in the company as a consumer; I appreciated the product so much that I wanted to be a part of such an original brand that was altering people's perceptions of shopping. The White Briefs prides itself on its return custom; once a customer has felt the quality of the products, they return again and again. We also have presence at all the major fashion weeks, so we are really getting the product out

The new collection from The White Briefs is called The Black Collection. Why has this new collection been designed? We needed to bring out something new. There was actually a high demand for a collection in black. Black and white are the easiest colours to wear, so it was only a matter of time before the black collection was released. Also, this brand is unisex, and men in the south of Europe prefer to wear black. What's next for The White Briefs? We are launching a children's collection in white that is similar to the existing adult's collection. It is still designed and created ecologically, and eliminates the causes of rashes on children and babies due to it being 100 per cent pure cotton and the fact that no chemicals are used in the process. It's also great because it teaches children the importance of caring for our world and gives them a different perspective on the way they live their lives.
