THE SIBA HUB

THE

THE The SIBA Hub is your way to meet the SIBA team and ask any questions you may have about BeerX UK or any other element of the trade organisation. SIBA Staff will be working in the SIBA Hub throughout BeerX UK so if you have any questions about the event itself, where things are happening, how you get hold of a printed programme or even how you buy beer tokens, then come over and we can help. There will always be at least one member of staff on the SIBA Hub, but actually most of the time many more Team members will be around (think of the SIBA Hub as our base of operations!) so if you do have questions on specific areas of SIBA business, from Government lobbying and campaigning, to how best to market your beers or use the assured seal, then come over and we will do our best to help put you in touch with the right member of staff. The SIBA Hub also features some Delegate networking space including desks, sofas and tables, so please feel free to come and work from the area between sessions, or arrange a meeting with another Delegate or Supplier.

5

HUB

HUB Whatever the question, the SIBA Hub information desk is where to get the answer!

BeerX UK is cashless! In order to increase efficiency and be more Covid-safe we are going cashless for 2022. Delegates will need to use card or contactless payment (including Google and Apple Pay) to buy BeerX UK tickets, Beer Tokens or food from the various cafes and vendors within the event.

British Guild of Beer Writers PRESS DESK Within the SIBA Hub there will be a dedicated Press Desk in association with the British Guild of Beer Writers - with work stations and power for your laptop when that news deadline is approaching. Members of the Guild Board will also be around throughout the event to answer questions about becoming a member.

Free water Please note free water is available from the fountains in the Atrium.

CHAIRMAN’S INTRODUCTION

Roy Allkin

The Chairman’s introduction Welcome to Exhibition Centre Liverpool for BeerX UK 2022. For many of us BeerX UK 2020 was the last industry event we attended before we went into the first National lockdown, so it seems fitting that this will be our first event as the final restrictions begin to lift. I would like to first of all thank all of the Supplier Associate Members who have invested in the show and taken out trade stands, and furthermore to our various event sponsors including Headline Sponsors Kegstar – without you BeerX UK simply couldn’t go ahead and your continued support is hugely appreciated. This year we will also have Stage partners for the very first time, with Breww, Charles Faram and Crisp Malt each working with SIBA to host our three seminar stages and Independent Beer Awards judging. So a further thankyou to you and all of our other sponsors and partners across the event. This will be my first BeerX as Chairman and I look forward to welcoming you into our National AGM, where I am sure we will enjoy some healthy and positive debate on the issues which matter most to you as members. The Resolutions from our AGM shape the direction of the organisation and we will not only be discussing the future, but also reporting back on what has been done to act on the motions passed in previous years. As an organisation we are here to work for you, and the SIBA Board which I Chair is made up of your Elected Directors–brewers from across the UK–who represent the interests of the 8 regions at a National

level and ensure the SIBA Management Team and Chief Executive James Calder are delivering on the areas that matter most to you. Our Staff Team work incredibly hard on your behalf and I’m very proud to help shape the future of SIBA alongside them and the Elected SIBA Board. BeerX UK is also my first time presenting the SIBA Lifetime Achievement Award as part of Wednesday’s Chairman’s Reception, which is presented to an individual who has over the course of a number of years made an outstanding contribution to our industry and to SIBA Member breweries. I’m very proud to be presenting this award and hope you will join me in opening the evening’s awards proceedings with a beer, ahead of me handing over to this year’s awards host Pete Brown. Pete’s work in writing about and championing independent beer in the UK is second to none and I’d like to extend a warm welcome to him as we look forward to hearing the results in this year’s SIBA Business Awards 2022 (Wed) and Independent Beer Awards 2022 (Thurs). To all of you in the running for an award I wish you good luck, and to those visiting BeerX UK for the first time a very warm welcome.

ROY ALLKIN CHAIRMAN

2022

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S WELCOME

James Calder welcome to

2022

8

Welcome to BeerX UK 2022, the UK’s biggest beer and brewing trade event and something which myself and my team are very proud of. Hopefully you agree the long hours of preparation have been worth it! This year is our biggest event ever, with more expert seminars, industry panels and tutored tastings than ever before alongside a huge trade show exhibition, our trade-only beer showcase, our Beer and Business awards, and of course a range of fringe events throughout the week. We’re delighted to be back in Liverpool once more and I look forward to seeing as many as possible of you in the event, during our AGM, and of course at the bar for a beer. Whether you are a SIBA Member, visiting brewer, or beer industry Delegate, BeerX UK is designed with you in mind – offering everything from expert brewing advice, training and talks, to seminars designed to help you run better businesses or more efficient marketing. Our tutored tasting sessions are a particular highlight this year, so make sure you arrive early to be sure of a place. There’ll be advanced off-flavour training with Alex Barlow of the Beer & Cider Academy, a beer and cider session with the Ciderologist Gabe Cook, an exclusive tasting of super-fresh American Craft beer with Lotte Peplow of the Brewers Association, a beer and cheese matching session with Beer Sommelier Natalya Watson, and a mystery beer-tasting-with-atwist with Andy Parker of Elusive Brewery. BeerX UK 2022 will also see the return of the SIBA British Craft Beer Report, this year presented in association with Croxsons.

This is the third edition of SIBA’s Craft Beer Report, and the first full report we have produced since the pandemic began in 2020. The last two years have been arguably the most unpredictable and transformative for the craft beer sector of any we have ever known, and that makes our report this year particularly important - arriving as we finally shake off the last of the Covid restrictions and fight our way back to normality. One of the major differences in the post-pandemic landscape is that small brewers are no longer relying so heavily on draught beer sales through pubs, as by necessity, SIBA brewers have started to build a strong direct route to the consumer through webshops. (Checkout our session on Wednesday for tips on improving your webshop user experience). There has also been growth in the off-trade, and bricks and mortar shops, taprooms and pubs owned by small brewers. By contrast, the report also highlights the disastrous effect the last two years have had on cask, an issue we’re tackling head on with our panel ‘Is cask beer worth saving?’ on the main stage Thursday. Whatever sessions you’ve got pencilled in for the next few days, if you’re here to catch-up with industry colleagues or shop for a new fermenter, I hope you have an excellent BeerX UK 2022.

Launch of the SIBA Craft Beer Report 2022

The SIBA Craft Beer Report 2022 is our first annual report since its last publication in March 2020, a week before the country went into National lockdown. The report pulls together the latest data on the independent craft beer market, including academic analysis of the SIBA Members’ Survey, newly commissioned consumer research, and a broad range of industry data and reporting, edited by former The Publican Editor and current Independent Brewer Editor Caroline Nodder. The SIBA Craft Beer Report 2022 is being published in association with Croxsons, who have come on board as the first ever Official Industry Partner. “The SIBA Craft Beer Report is the most comprehensive report of its kind published in the UK and provides incredibly valuable insight into the independent craft beer market in the UK, including expert analysis and commentary from

some of the industries foremost writers. I am delighted to see the return of the report in 2022 and the emerging trends and insight it throws up. I would also like to say a huge thankyou to Croxsons, who have come on board as the first ever industry partner for the report and with whom we have been able to continue offering industry-leading research, analysis and commentary.” James Calder, SIBA Chief Executive. Report presentation by Editor Caroline Nodder, Prof. Geoff Pugh & Prof. David Tyrrall, and CGA Strategy The SIBA Craft Beer Report will be launched with a presentation from report Editor Caroline Nodder, Professors Geoff Pugh and David Tyrall - who carried out the academic analysis of this year’s members survey and prior survey data - and CGA Strategy, who will give an update on market trends featured in the report.

“The last two years have had a profound effect on the beer market, accelerating trends in some areas and changing our industry in ways which are here to stay. To say it is our most important report to date is an understatement, and it has been hugely enlightening to work on what I believe is a crucial representation of the independent craft brewing industry in 2022. I look forward to sharing with you this year’s ground-breaking findings. ” Caroline Nodder, Editor of the SIBA Craft Beer Report 2022. With unique insights into this year’s reports from the people behind it, this Keynote session will take place immediately following the SIBA Annual General Meeting on the main stage.

Experience the Atlas Copco brewery equipment If your challenge as a brewer is to boost your production and minimise costs without impacting on the quality of the beer, we might have the answer! Are you currently buying bottled nitrogen gas? If so, you could reduce your nitrogen costs to one tenth by switching to an Atlas Copco onsite nitrogen generator. Don’t have much space to house a new piece of equipment? That’s not a problem, since our NGMs units have a footprint of only 0.25m2 with low operating costs while offering an excellent return. If you are worried about the impact of making such a big change to your nitrogen supply, we would be happy to show you some examples of similar breweries who have made the switch and are pleased they did. If you would like to complete your efficiency package, our new TCX industrial chillers might be the right choice for you! These chillers play a key role in many stages of the brewing process, maximising energy efficiency whilst offering the reliability and performance you demand from your water cooler. Whether you operate a microbrewery or mega brewery, Atlas Copco has the right equipment for your purposes. We are already a big name in air compressors to the

brewing industry, and can also supply nitrogen generators, process cooling solutions, pipework, specialised filtration products for various stages of the brewing process, parts and service, from just one supplier to keep your brewing equipment running. This is why half of the world’s beer producers have already chosen Atlas Copco as a supplier. Now it’s your turn to find out what the Atlas Copco brewery experience can bring to your brewery too.

PROUD TO BE INDEPENDENT

Are you proudly independent? Five years ago, SIBA launched the Assured Independent British Craft Brewer scheme to help in differentiating our members’ beers from mass produced global brands. Since then the majority of SIBA members have started using the seal on their bottle and can labels, pumpclips, social media and websites – we’ve even seen member taproom floors and delivery vans carrying the seal. Our 2022 members’ survey found almost all SIBA brewers (96%) are now aware of the scheme, showing the growing importance small brewers place on signalling to consumers that your beers are genuine craft products from a small independent producer. We have now also launched a simplified version of the seal which is perfect for using where space is at a premium on can labels etc, as well as a Welsh language version for our members in Wales & West who display dual language text on all their products. If you don’t currently use the seal or would like access to any of the alternative versions, visit the SIBA Members’ Toolbox ‘Filing Cabinet’ and click on the Artwork & Logos section. Beer drinkers can be sure that wherever they see the seal – be it on a pumpclip, bottle or can label – the craft beer they are drinking is the real thing.

REGIONAL MEETINGS:

As part of SIBA’s ongoing Delivering for Brewers initiative we have launched various new business tools, guides and opportunities for members. Our comprehensive labelling guide is updated throughout the year and always available via the Toolbox.

SIBA’s eight regions host Regional Meetings throughout the year which allow SIBA members the opportunity to network with other brewers and suppliers, as well as speak to members of the SIBA Senior Management Team regarding anything to do with SIBA Nationally.

The labelling guide advises on what is and isn’t needed on your bottle, can, cask and keg labels – including allergen advice, ABV, alcohol consumption advice and much more. This guide and all future ‘Delivering for Brewers’ items are free of charge to SIBA Members.

IN-PERSON AND VIA ZOOM

Regional meetings are a great place to network, ask questions and raise any ideas or concerns you may have regarding regional operations, SIBA nationally, or brewing itself. Most regions are now hosting in-person meetings with the ability to alternatively join via Zoom.

If you have any questions on any of the above please email membership@siba.co.uk

A History of SIBA

■ S IBA Independent Brewer is produced quarterly to coincide with major industry events

In the late 1970s and early 1980s the omens were not good for launching small breweries. The industry was dominated by six giant national groups that acted as a cartel while regional brewers enjoyed the comfort blanket of their tied estates of pubs. It was an industry that had seemingly impossible barriers for new producers to enter. David Bruce, founder of the Firkin chain of brew pubs, was one of those who crashed into the road blocks when he attempted to join the Brewers’ Society, forerunner of the British Beer & Pub Association.

“I told them I was a fully licensed commercial brewer but they said I was too small and they represented big brewers, not entrepreneurs. I was also turned down by the Worshipful Company of Brewers.” Bruce met up with a small group of kindred spirits who faced even greater difficulties: they didn’t own any pubs and they couldn’t get their beers into outlets owned by national and regional brewers. The pioneers included Simon Hoskins of Tower Bridge Brewery, Patrick Fitzpatrick of Godsons, Mark Wallington of Archers, and James Lynch of Bourne Valley.

And now for something completley different... Terry Jones enjoying a beer at Penrhos Court in Herefordshire.

■ The SIBA Independent Brewer offers brewers professional advice & guidance on numerous business matters

“We used to meet for lunch on Fridays once a month in a Davy’s Wine Bar in London called the Boot & Flogger,” David Bruce recalls. “They were very long lunches and we then drove home – fortunately before the breathalyser was introduced.”

A History of SIBA at 40

These boozy events had a serious intent. With his love of dreadful puns, Bruce labelled the group SLOBA, which stood for the Society of London Brewers.

We asked Roger Protz, one of the best known and most respected beer writers of the last 40 years, to delve into the SIBA archives and speak to some of the pioneers from SIBA’s early days to find out more about how the organisation came to be founded and what has driven its growth since then…

“We were a bunch of renegades,” he says. Their aim was to make good beer but they had to break the monopoly grip of the bigger brewers. Bruce then had the good fortune to meet Dave Roberts who was keen to open his own brewery, Pilgrim in Surrey. Roberts visited Bruce’s Fox & Firkin in Lewisham to see if he could buy similar brewing equipment and was encouraged the join the SLOBA group as he had muchneeded experience of government. Roberts was a former civil servant who had worked at the top level of the Welsh Office and had been seconded to the Ministry of

Defence. He knew how Whitehall worked and how to get the ear of politicians and policy makers. Memories differ over where the first formal meeting to set up SIBA, first known as the Small Independent Brewers Society, took place. David Bruce believes it was at the Cross Keys pub in Wootton Basset in Wiltshire, while Dave Roberts thinks it was the offices of the brewery supplies group Murphy’s. What is certain is that Bruce’s wife, Louise, became the first voluntary secretary and Dave Roberts was put in charge of campaigns. The collegiate nature of the small brewers is highlighted by Dave Roberts’ experience. He watched brewing at the Fox & Firkin and other Bruce brew pubs then installed similar kit at his site in Reigate. “David came down to help me set it up, then one of his team, a brewer who had trained at Heriot-Watt, spent a day showing me how to brew – and then I was on my own!”

"I told them I was a fully licensed commercial brewer but they said I was too small and they represented big brewers, not entrepreneurs. I was also turned down by the Worshipful Company of Brewers." David Bruce

The fledgling group had some star dust sprinkled on it when it had the good fortune to attract the interest of Peter Austin who had connections to the Monty Python star Terry Jones. Jones, who died in January this year, recalled in an interview in 2008 with the Morning Advertiser that the Python team had unexpectedly made a lot of money from their film Monty Python and the Holy Grail and one way to avoid being hammered by the tax man was to invest in a business. Jones loved beer, he was a member of CAMRA and he put money into launching a brewery at Penrhos Court in Herefordshire in 1977. He teamed up with Peter Austin, former head brewer at the Hull Brewery, who was keen to build and develop kit suitable for small brewers. Penrhos survived for only a few years but it had put down a marker and the publicity it generated as a result of Terry Jones’s involvement

encouraged a number of beer lovers to open their own plants. Peter Austin was invited to become SIBA’s first chairman. Dubbed “the father of micro-brewing”, he opened his own brewery in Ringwood in Hampshire in 1978 where he achieved further fame when his Old Thumper strong ale was named CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain in 1988. He then toured the world, installing brewing kit in many new small breweries in the United States, France, Africa and China. With Austin in the chair, SIBA attracted more members, including Carola Brown from Ballards in West Sussex and Simon Whitmore who founded Butcombe in Avon in 1978. Whitmore was a major influence. He forced the bigger brewers to sit up and take notice of SIBA as he had been managing director of Courage Western in Bristol and knew the industry inside out. At Butcombe he installed a 45-barrel kit that produced 150 barrels a week for 250 outlets in Avon and Somerset. Many of those pubs had been Courage houses that Whitmore had adroitly sold off when he was running Courage: it was a classic example of gamekeeper turned poacher. He proved to his fellow SIBA members that it was possible to brew substantial amounts of beer, get them into free trade accounts and, most importantly, make a good living at the same time. Peter Austin and Dave Roberts said SIBA’s main role had to be campaigning for drastic changes in the way duty was levied on beer. In Britain, duty was paid on original gravity, a measure of the fermentable materials – malted grain and such additives as brewing sugar – and brewers of all sizes paid the same rates. “Small brewers had one hand tied behind their backs,” Dave Roberts says. “The straight line in duty meant the bigger brewers could afford to offer big discounts to pubs and supermarkets as well as selling through their tied estates. We argued that small brewers needed a 50 per cent discount on duty.” SIBA members did benefit from the switch from duty based on original gravity to alcohol by volume. It meant in effect that tax was paid when the beer was ready leave the brewery and was known as “factory gate duty”. “When duty was paid on OG,” Roberts adds, “small brewers had to borrow to pay their monthly bills.” Continued on page 28

Comment: The Brewers Association Leading in Diversity and Inclusion At the Brewers Association we believe beer is for everyone and we continue to be proactive in advancing the brewing community’s path of diversity and inclusion. Our Diversity Committee works to cultivate conversation and action and has led to initiatives like the hiring of the Brewers Association’s first ever Diversity Ambassador, Dr. J Nikol Jackson-Beckham.

No matter where your beer comes from or what style you’re drinking we believe in working together to ensure it tastes as good as the brewer intended.

In addition to traveling to state guilds and craft brewing community events to speak on best practices, she’s helped us publish a new set of guidelines that lay the groundwork for addressing, creating and managing a diversity and inclusion program for breweries. Another initiative by the committee has been the introduction of a grant in support of local and regional events that foster and promote a more diverse and inclusive beer community. By funding these projects, our goal is to inspire festival organisers to reach a broad and diverse group of festival attendees, foster growth and stimulate a cultural shift in beer.

Quality American craft beer is exported all round the world, but it is a perishable product and requires

all parties in the supply chain to be singing from the same song sheet. Beer drinkers are becoming more knowledgeable than ever before about shelf life, BBDs and flavour and this is helping to ensure higher standards are maintained throughout the supply chain. Just one bad experience can put off a potential customer from purchasing your beer again. The Brewers Association publishes the Draught Beer Quality Manual (DBQM) an easy guide to draught line cleaning, system components and balance, proper pouring technique, glassware sanitation and more. Despite being written for an American market much of the information contained within DBQM is relevant to the UK and can be downloaded FREE OF CHARGE from http://www.draughtquality.org/ We also produce a raft of literature and resources to help our international trading partners understand and appreciate American craft beer and these are available to download free of charge from www.brewersassociation.org

American Craft Beer in the UK The Brewers Association EDP has been actively supporting American craft beer in the UK for the last 15 years and enjoys a long-standing and

mutually beneficial relationship with CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival every August. Lotte Peplow, our American Craft Beer Ambassador for Europe, is based in the UK and her role is to educate and inform the trade and industry about American craft beer while raising its profile amongst beer drinkers. Her relatively new appointment shows our commitment to advancing and elevating American craft beer in the UK and Europe. We have also appointed a new Ambassador in China to help our members grow their businesses on the other side of the world. We enjoy a strong relationship with SIBA because no matter where your beer comes from or what style you’re drinking we believe in working together to ensure it tastes as good as the brewer intended. And what of the next 40 years…..it’s an incredibly exciting time to be a beer drinker and I can foresee greater innovation, greater creativity and greater choice in the craft beer industry. Cheers to that! For more information go to www.brewersassociation.org

©Brewers Association

Independence We recognised a lack of clarity of ownership in the marketplace as the global brewing companies seek to muscle in on the booming craft beer scene and acquire formerly small and independent brewers to present them as craft. Large multinational brewing companies have massive influence at distributor level and this gives them an unfair advantage. The beer drinker is confused and finds it difficult to identify beer from a truly independent producer. When a beer drinker walks into a bar and sees an array of tap handles, they don’t know which beers are truly independent. Many of those tap handles, while seemingly different, can often be owned all by the same large brewing company. We call this the ’illusion of choice’ and believe it is bad for the beer industry because it reduces choice. So, in 2017 the Brewers Association launched the Independent Craft Brewers Seal to differentiate small and independent craft brewers from ‘big’ multinational brewers. It features an iconic beer bottle flipped upside down to signify the spirit with which craft brewers have upended the beer market, while informing beer lovers they are choosing a beer from a brewery that’s independently owned. Transparency of ownership is a key driver of purchase intent and 53% of beer lovers in the Sates indicate independent ownership as being important to them when purchasing beer. To date, more than 4,700 small and independent breweries have adopted the seal representing close to 80 per cent of craft beer brewed in the

84

U.S. A desire for independence is spreading across the globe as beer lovers increasingly want to know who makes their beer and we are seeing independent seals popping up in other countries too, like Australia and Ireland.

Style Trends American IPAs are the rock stars of the craft beer world and it was this style that caught the attention of the British beer drinker back in the late 1990s. Accounting for almost a third of all sales in America, the category is the primary driver of craft beer volume and is now more a platform for innovation than a style in itself. IPAs are synonymous with the craft beer revolution, offering hoppy innovation of their own with a variety of incarnations from 4% to 12% ABV, from fruity and floral to citrusy and piney. I often get asked what’s the next IPA? The answer: IPA. Sessionable beers and lighter styles, including lighter fruit sours, are also growing. If the drinker isn’t looking for hoppy beers, data shows it’s to be likely something “light and crisp.” There are two reasons I think this is: lighter styles allow the aging craft beer drinker to continue to support their favourite brewery while limiting alcohol consumption, and they also provide an entry point for new craft drinkers more used to drinking mass produced lager. Consumer demand for new and exciting American craft beer styles is growing the world round. I’m often asked whether this is a good or bad thing for exported American craft beer.

©Brewers Association

Our belief is that growing the broader category of craft will result in high-profile listings for small, quality focused brewers regardless of origin. Most craft beer drinkers are curious and always seeking out the next big thing so a UK beer drinker who enjoys domestic craft will also seek out quality, imported craft as well. While beer drinkers may support their local brewery in their respective country, there is always scope to explore and discover beers from the great brewing nations of the world, including America. American and British craft beers are not mutually exclusive, rather we see them as complementing each other. One lifts sales of the other and vice versa. Variety drives sales.

LOBBYING

Time and again our annual members’ survey shows that political lobbying is the top priority for SIBA, especially the defence of Small Breweries’ Relief (SBR). This is particularly pertinent this year as we mark the 20th anniversary of SBR. We can see, day in and day out, what the impact of SBR has been – significant growth in the number of small brewers, which have vastly improved the diversity and quality of beer. If you want to learn more than I’d recommend heading to the session on SBR at 20 where we’ll have insight from two academics – Geoff Pugh and David Tyrrall – who have written extensively on SBR since it was introduced in 2002. They have combined data from SIBA’s members’ surveys to look at SBR’s impact over the longer term to draw some interesting conclusions. Continued on page 66

LOBBYING

Don’t miss... “Brewing great tasting lower-strength beer” Beer Garden Seminar: Wednesday 14:15 - 15:00

BUT WE’RE NOT ONLY INTERESTED IN THE PAST BUT THE FUTURE. WHAT WILL THE NEXT 20 YEARS LOOK LIKE FOR SBR? In under a year’s time the biggest shakeup of the alcohol duty system will be upon us, which will have long term implications for small brewers and how SBR works. The aim of the reforms is to simplify the system and to make it fairer between different products, with all drinks being taxed in proportion to their alcohol content in litres of pure alcohol. This will mean that SBR will become part of a new Small Producer Relief that applies to products such as cider and made wines that are below 8.5% ABV. The brewing guru Eddie Gadd, from Gadds’ Ramsgate Brewery, will be joining the SBR at 20 talk to give you an idea of what these changes will mean. If you’re interested in what their impact is on other alcoholic products, then come along to the panel debate on the alcohol duty changes. We’re joined by colleagues from the independent cider and wine industry to debate whether the new alcohol duty system create a more level playing field for drink makers. In theory, these changes could be an opportunity for brewers looking to make other products which also benefit from the new relief system.

“Does the new alcohol duty system create a more level playing field for drink makers?” The Cellar Panel: Thursday 17:00 - 18:00

One of the other objectives of the alcohol duty change is to encourage the production of lower strength products. For beer, this means that relief will apply below 2.9% abv for the first time and the definition of beer will be change to 1.2%. Therefore there’s no better time than to come along to the the session on brewing great tasting lower-strength beer. We’ve seen exceptional growth in this category over recent years and increasingly brewers are adding low and no beer to their existing ranges. A key initiative under the changes is the introduction of a new draught duty rate for beer placed in large containers. SIBA has been leading the fight for this to include containers of 20 litre and above in size so that small brewers can receive the benefits of this change. But to do so we need your help. In our members’ survey we asked whether you’d had your local MP on a tour and a huge 60% said no with only a third saying they would be interested in doing so. Engaging directly with your MP helps SIBA to campaign for changes and if you can please do write to your MP, invite them to visit and get in touch with me. I can provide briefings, background information and even come along to help. I hope you enjoy BeerX as much as I will – and do grab me for a beer and let me know what SIBA and I can do for you. Barry Watts Head of Policy and Public Affairs SIBA

BUSINESS AWARDS Brewery Business of the Year 2020 winners North Brewing Co

SIBA BUSINESS AWARDS 2022: RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE IN THE INDEPENDENT CRAFT BEER INDUSTRY The SIBA Business Awards seek to congratulate excellence in the brewing industry across a variety of categories, from pump clip, can and bottle design, to efforts taken by brewers to make their business more sustainable, innovative or successful, as well as naming the UK’s best bars and retailers of craft beer from independent breweries. The SIBA Business Awards 2022 will include three new categories in response to shifting consumer buying habits over the last year, making them the biggest set of awards ever dished out to the industry by the craft brewing trade body. The awards now include categories for the “UK’s Best Independent Craft Beer Retailer – Online”, “UK’s Best Independent Craft Brewery Webshop” and “Community Engagement”, the latter award aimed at breweries which have cemented themselves as assets of their local communities in recent years. The hotly contested award for the “UK’s Best Independent Craft Brewery Taproom” also returns in 2022, following huge interest since its launch in 2020. “The SIBA Business Awards 2022 are the first of our National awards as BeerX UK makes its triumphant return to Liverpool Exhibition Centre. The new categories which recognise the huge growth in online beer retail, as well as the new Community Engagement award which highlights breweries who engage with and benefit their surrounding communities, make these awards more important than ever. Judged by a panel of industry experts and presented in front of the largest gathering of beer and brewing professionals in the UK, the SIBA Business Awards 2022 really are a unique opportunity to give the UK’s best beer or brewing businesses the recognition they deserve.” Neil Walker, Chair of Judges, SIBA Business Awards.

Pete Brown to present the SIBA Business Awards 2022 The SIBA Business Awards 2022 will be presented by acclaimed beer author, journalist, broadcaster and consultant Pete Brown. Named British Guild of Beer Writers’ “Beer Writer of the Year” in 2009, 2012, 2016 and 2021, Pete has won three Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards, been shortlisted twice for the Andre Simon Awards, and in 2020 was named an “Industry Legend” at the Imbibe Hospitality Awards.

BUSINESS AWARDS OFFICIAL CATEGORY CRITERIA

Marketing Implementation

Sustainable Business

Sponsored by: Saxon Packaging Finalists: Anspach & Hobday, Big Smoke Brew Co., Signature Brew & Siren Craft Brew

Sponsored by: Rankin Brothers and Sons Finalists: Barnaby’s Brewhouse, Bluestone Brewing, Duration Brewing & Ludlow Brewing

For all aspects of effective marketing and communication strategy, including general or specific campaigns, promotions, PR, social media activity, product launches etc.

For taking the ethics of environmental awareness and sustainable business operation way beyond the norm, with either a single innovative initiative or a holistic strategy for sustainability.

Entries must stand out from the crowd for marketing initiative, effective communication, a PR opportunity seized, or imagination and creativity deployed in the increasingly competitive virtual world of social networking.

NEW !

Entries must show how measures implemented in the brewery, such as production processes, energy economies, recycling and packaging, are minimising environmental impact to the benefit of both brewery and community.

Community Engagement

Best Individual Design

Sponsored by: Napthens Finalists: 40FT Brewery, Big Smoke Brew Co., Brewgooder & Full Circle

Sponsored by: Croxsons Finalists: Anspach & Hobday, Bundobust/ North Brewing Co., Brewgooder & Duration Brewing

This award highlights breweries who have shown an outstanding commitment to engaging with their local community, supporting local initiatives, or raising money for charitable causes through events and fundraisers. Entrants should demonstrate how the brewery is integrated into and supports the local community; either through a single successful initiative or a range of activities which engage local people.

Best Concept Design Sponsored by: Alfa Laval Ltd Finalists: Big Smoke Brew Co., Brewgooder. Moonwake & Jiddlers’ Tipple

For the design concept behind a range of beers from a brewery, or a brewery’s entire branding and design strategy. Entries must provide details of all aspects of the design concept and how it creates a distinct market identity, setting the brand apart in an intensely competitive field.

For a single design of bottle, can or pump clip that clearly stands out, gains point-of-sale market advantage and ultimately drives the purchase of a brewery product. Strong traditional designs are welcome, but entries are also sought for contemporary and original artwork that puts a brewery’s beers at the forefront of the evolution of point-of-sale as an essential marketing tool. Multiple entries from a brewery are welcome, but should be entered separately and any entries which contain a range of designs within a ‘concept’ or ‘brand’ should be entered into the Total Concept Design Category below.

Business Innovation Sponsored by: Norriq Ltd Finalists: Brew York, Bullhouse, Pitchfork & Thornbridg

For breweries that have shown true innovation in their business. This could be anything from a bold export operation getting beer in to the hands of new consumers or an internal innovation which has improved efficiency or profitability. This broad category should be entered by any brewery who believe they have done something innovative within the industry.

97

Our specially crafted Genuine Brewflex® hose assemblies for brewing are designed to not only meet stringent food hygiene standards and obligations but also help to minimise unnecessary and avoidable costs commonly caused by improperly recommended hose solutions.

n PROTECT YOUR EMPLOYEES – ELIMINATE THE RISK

Poorly maintained hoses can burst under pressure during a CIP regime. Caustic in eyes, boiling water being flushed through or loose fittings detaching from the hose can cause serious injury to employees and operators.

n PROTECT YOUR PRODUCT – DON’T LOSE A BATCH

Hose liners can delaminate over time, especially if the wrong one is used, & (if not maintained) the microscopic particles can bypass filtration systems, into your beer, damaging product integrity.

n PROTECT YOUR BREWERY - ENSURE YOUR COMPLIANCE
