Welcome... Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion, Ph. D. At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director

2011 Dragons Softball Preview Last year the Dragons finished 34-18 and qualified for the NCAA tourney for the first time in school history. They finished the year ranked 7th in the Midwest Region and posted a 16-10 GLIAC record along with an impressive 11-2 home mark. The Dragons have reason for optimism entering the season as they have lost only 3 letterwinners and one starter from that group. Overall the Dragons return 15 letterwinners and 8 positional starters along with three returning starting pitchers. Leading the returners is senior first baseman Tiffany Smith, who earned All-GLIAC honors by hitting .373 with 13 HR and 60 RBI. Lauren Mazzuca was third in batting with a .319 mark and a team-high 44 runs scored and 4 triples and also earned All-GLIAC selection. On the left side of the infield, All-Region and All-Conference standout Amanda Temple returns at third base after leading the team with a blistering .429 mark. Meagan Baird also returns at shortstop after an All-GLIAC season in which she hit .266. At catcher, Lesy Herbert (.264) returns and will be joined by talented freshman Caitlin Houk, who batted .455 last year while earning First Team All-Ohio honors. The two players will share time behind the dish and also trade duties at DP along with newcomer Torrie Terry (two-time All-District). In the outfield, Melodi Murrieta (.203) and Alyssa Brown (.315) will share time in left field, while Stephanie Bobotas (.255) and Jessie Creakbaum (.267) will handle duties in center field and right field, respectively. Newcomer Katie Toomey (.400, All-State) will also see action in the outfield mix. The Dragons’ three returning starting pitchers will be joined by a talented freshman, giving TU good depth on the mound. Abbey Cooksey (13-6, 3.72 ERA, 25 games) will lead the pack, followed by Amber Young (8-6, 4.24 ERA, 24 games) and Kelly Mayer (9-4, 4.36 ERA, 21 games) as all three pitchers loaded up on experience last season. The trio will be joined by Mindy Meredith, a two-time First Team All-Ohio hurler who compiled a 62-12 prep record while also winning a state championship during her career. Three times she amassed a sub-1.00 ERA during her career. The Dragons will play a strong non-conference schedule before jumping into GLIAC play, taking on tough opponents such as Lock Haven, Wisconsin-Parkside, Caldwell, CW Post, and Minnesota-Duluth. Getting off to a strong start is critical for the Dragons this season. “If we can get off to a strong start, the region rankers will take notice and rank you accordingly,” said Head Coach Jeff Nickerson. “We want to make our mark early because it is much harder to climb into the rankings later in the season. We want to make our mark early and keep it rolling into GLIAC play.” Tiffin’s chief competition in conference play will be Wayne State, Ashland, and Saginaw Valley State.
The Diamond of the Dragons
Tiffin University enjoys playing its home games at the Tiffin University Athletic Complex. One of many recently developed facilities on display, the Diamond of the Dragons is a new and attractive addition to the softball fields of the American Mideast Conference. With capacity for 500, a separate junior varsity field, enclosed bullpens, and a large outfield electronic scoreboard, the field offers the Tiffin University softball team a great place to call home. The field is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffin University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all the outdoor athletics teams at TU. The fields, which debuted in the fall of 1997, also include a baseball field, two soccer fields, and two football practice fields. Also new to the fields is Tiffin University’s Athletic Fieldhouse. In addition, there is expanded parking accomodating hundreds of vehicles.

Share the Pride, Build on Tradition is a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffin University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investment by Tiffin University of more than $30 million in the Tiffin community.
Campaign Objectives Recreation Center $9,400,000 The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a field house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities. Other Campus Development $1,600,000 Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only reflects the University’s own growth and success, but also enhances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffin. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities. Endowed Student Scholarships $1,000,000 Without financial aid, many Tiffin University students could not afford higher education. Since over 80 percent of TU students receive some level of aid, TU leaders seek $1 million to bolster the endowment resources of the University to create additional student scholarships.
