Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. A recent self study condducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be U eecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. Lonny Allen Head Coach No one is m more associated with Dragons w bbaseball Lonny Allen. He enters A hhis 21st season as hhead coach and 224th season with tthe program. A f t e r over ttaking in 1992, Allen helped the team post a winning record in just his second season, going 17-15 in 1993. One staple of Allen’s teams has been heavy hitting, as the offensive record books have been rewritten numerous times during his tenure.

Allen also serves as Athletic Director for Tiffin University and has been at the forefront of continuing the growth of the department in Division II and the GLIAC. Under his direction, the program has made many positive additions, such as the development of a new indoor practice and recreation center, indoor track and field complex, a golf practice facility, and also a wrestling practice facility. In addition, Allen has overseen the addition of two new varsity sports (women’s lacrosse, wrestling), helping develop the new Recreation center featuring an indoor track and field complex, new athletic offices, and an indoor practice facility while also expanding the size of the weight room and training facilities for the betterment of TU’s athletes.

Allen is a 1992 graduate of Tiffin University with a degree in Sports Management. He has a Master’s With 419 career victories, no other Dragons baseball degree in Sports Administration from Bowling Green manager has won more games. The Dragons have been State University . remarkably consistent, posting 20 or more victories in 13 of his seasons. Tiffin’s tradition of great hitting was in full view during the 2010 season. Led by national batting champion Devin Rudolph, TU set 10 new records, just missing qualifying for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament for the first time in school history. Among Allen’s other highlights are the 2006 squad winning 26 games, the third highest single season wins total in school history. In 2003 the squad set a new single season record with 30 victories, shattering 18 individual and team records along the way. Allen has coached 11 all-americas, 18 all-region and 94 all-conference players. In addition, four Dragons have played professionally, Brett Muche, Gregg Prenzlin, Brett Gray and Jesse Schrader.

Joe Wilkins

Assistant Coach Joe Wilkins enters his second season with Tiffin University after a three-year absence, T hhaving served as assistant coach in 2006 and 22007. He will handle the pitching staff and tutor Dragons catchers. D Wilkins was an assistant coach at Pepperdine (2010), where his responsibilities included training the catchers, helping to develop the offense and coaching first base. He helped second-year catcher Nate Johnson grind through a 54-game season in 2010, in which he caught all but one of 473.1 innings pitched and threw out 17 base runners - the fourth highest season total in school history. At the plate, Johnson led all Waves with nine home runs and 36 RBI en route to being named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention squad. Wilkins spent the 2009 season coaching the catchers at Wake Forest, where he tutored Cape Cod All-Star catcher Mike Murray. Murray has recently signed with the San Francisco Giants. Prior to working at WFU, Wilkins spent more than a year at the Floridabased IMG Academies where he worked under former Cleveland Indians bench coach Ken Bolek as the full-time catching instructor. He helped in the development of 2009 New York Yankees second-round draft pick J.R. Murphy. Murphy hit .627 in the spring of 2009 with 11 home runs in 102 at-bats. He added 34 extra-base hits and struck out just four times. During his first stint at TU, Wilkins coordinated the recruiting efforts that helped in the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II and developed athletic marketing fundraising ideas to improve facilities. At Heminger Field, a new press box, back stop and pro-style seating have been added, all of which the groundwork was laid by Wilkins. A locker room, lounge area and coaches offices attached to the home dugout were completed in 2011. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Wilkins coached in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. In 2006, he was the third base coach and worked with the hitters, catchers, outfielders and infielders for the Delaware Cows. In 2007, Wilkins was the head coach for the Stark County Terriers. As head coach of the Terriers, he worked with players from such collegiate programs as Wake Forest, Kent State and Cincinnati. Wilkins began his coaching career at Dublin (Ohio) Scioto High School in 2005, working with the catchers and serving as the off-season hitting instructor. Wilkins earned four letters at Ohio State, earning All-Big-10 second team honors and bening named the Most Outstanding Player at the Big Ten Tournament as a senior. His walkoff home run vs. Indiana gave the Buckeyes the tournament title. OSU won two Big Ten regular season championships and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Super Regional appearance in 1999, during Wilkins’ collegiate career. Wilkins played professionally for three years, spending time in the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm systems. He led the Northwest League’s Yakima Bears in hitting in 2002. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Wilkins graduated from Ohio State in 2005 with a degree in human ecology and a specialization in consumer affairs. He earned his master’s of business administration in 2007 from Tiffin University. Wilkins was a two-sport student-athlete at Dublin Scioto High School, where he was an all-state selection in both baseball and football.

Kurt Rammel Assistant Coach

Kurt Rammel enters his seventh season with tthe Tiffin University Dragons baseball program aand his third season as a full time assistant. His oon field duties include assisting Coach Wilkins w with the catchers and assisting Coach Allen w with the hitters. In addition, Rammel coaches first base, works with outfielders, helps with ppractice organization, and field maintenance. O Off the field, he assists in recruiting, plans travel arrangements, helps with camp development, and builds alumni relations. Rammel graduated from Coldwater High School in 2002. He spent one season at Defiance College before transferring to Tiffin. While in college, Rammel saw action as a catcher and first baseman. He was Honorable Mention all-conference twice, once at Defiance College and once at Tiffin. As a sophomore at Tiffin, Rammel was the 11th toughest strikeout in the nation. Rammel graduated from Tiffin University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a double major in sports management and marketing in 2007. He also received his master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in sports management in 2009. Outside of Tiffin University, Rammel was the assistant coach for the Grand Lake Mariners of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, in 2008. He currently resides in Tiffin, Ohio.

Brian Coleman Assistant Coach

Brian Coleman enters his seventh year of ccoaching with the Dragons baseball junior varsity pprogram. Coleman, who is also responsible for w working with the hitters and outfielders. Coleman is a Tiffin native who graduated from Calvert High School and played four years as a starter in centerfield for Heidelberg College, serving as captain. He earned Academic All-America honors. Coleman, who holds a B.S. in Health and Physical Education, served as head baseball coach at Bettsville High School for four years. He the Bobcats from a 1-22 record in 1998 to a 16-10 mark in 2001. Coleman also holds a Certificate of Education (K-12). Coleman has run his own pitching/hitting school since 1998. He owns and operates Sticks Lawn and Landscape LLC and lives in Tiffin with his wife, Duana, and daughter, Bria (10) and son Branyan (2).

DRAGONS LOOK TO PAINT A NEW SEASON When looking back at the 2011 season, you have to look past the obvious. The Dragons went 10-24 in the GLIAC (10th) and 13-35 overall. However, they lost 16 games by three runs or less. Tiffin also posted a win over Wayne State, who were the GLIAC and NCAA Division II Midwest Regional runner-ups. TU recorded two wins over Ohio Dominican, fifth in the league. Offensively, Tiffin returns five of seven players who hit better than .280. Senior Pat Curtin, an All-GLIAC first team and All-Midwest Region second team selection, scored 30 runs and led the squad with a .384 average. The Dragons return a pair of All-GLIAC honorees in seniors Jordan Chiero and Val Helldobler. Chiero had 11 doubles and three triples, scored 30 runs, drove in 26 runs and hit .327. Helldobler had 11 doubles, drove in 24 runs, stole 11 bases and hit .298. He is the all-time leader in assists with 348. Senior Zach McCutcheon batted .283 and senior Cory Osborne led the team with 28 RBI’s while hitting .281. Junior Ryan Williams played well down the stretch, hitting .311 over the last 14 games of the season. Tiffin hit the junior colleges hard, coming up with four players. Junior Roger Christensen was all-region selection at Mott CC (Mich.). He scored 31 runs and batted .306. TU also brought in three all-conference players in juniors Tayler Glass (Glen Oaks CC, Mich.), Tyler Glass (Glen Oaks CC, Mich.) and Ryan Locke (Kalamazoo Valley CC, Mich.). The Glass twins helped their team win the conference championship while Locke had 25 doubles, scored 85 runs and drove in 76 during his two-year career. Among the freshman, Nick Hueneberg (Peru, Ill.) and Derek Koch (Pleasant Plain, Ohio) look to challenge for playing time early. Hueneberg, as a senior at St. Bede’s High School, had 12 doubles, nine triples and three home runs, drove in 32 runs and batted .432 in 23 games. Koch, as a senior at Goshen High School, was the SBAAC Player of the Year. He was 3-2 and at the plate led the league in doubles, drove in 40 runs and hit .557. On the mound, senior Chris Pistorio and Curtin are the top hurlers back for the Dragons. Pistorio was 4-4 with three complete games in nine starts, struck out 22 batters and had a 6.17 earned run average in 54 innings of work. Curtin was 2-5 with two complete games in nine starts, struck out 30 batters and had a 5.21 ERA in 48.3 innings. Back on the rubber for the Dragons will be senior Jordan Liette, who missed 2011 with an injury. Two years ago, he was 2-2 and led the GLIAC with five saves. JC transfers Brent Faber and Eric Klepper look to challenge to be part of the rotation. Faber was 7-5 with 71 strikeouts in his two seasons at Mott CC (Mich.). Klepper was 12-9 with 99 strikeouts over the past two seasons at Kalamazoo Valley CC (Mich.). He ranked among the top 20 in the country for ERA. “I’m looking forward to the upcoming season,” said head coach Lonny Allen. “The players we have back along with the newcomers have me really excited. I thought we really gelled during the fall training. I’m anticipating having a very good season in 2012.”

Tiffin Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heminger Field continues to expand in the offsseason before the 2012 season. The home of the Dragons received an iimproved backstop area with a nicely designed concrete wall and professsional nettting in place of chain link fence. The fan seating was completely reworked, with individual seats replacing bleachers directly behind the backstop in front of the newly designed press box and concession area. Also new for the 2012 season is the full renovation and expansion of the Dragons dugout area, with individual lockerrooms, baseball offices, and a lounge area directly connected to the Dragonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dugout. The facility will continue to improve with the times as it becomes an integral part of making attending baseball games a ggreat experience for Tiffin University fans. Tiffin University enjoys playing its home games at H Heminger Field. One of many attractive new facilities on ddisplay, Heminger Field is one of the top baseball fields in tthe region. With capacity for 500, enclosed bullpens, a new fully eequipped press box, a renovated backstop area with nettting, iimproved stadium seating, and a large outfield electronic sscoreboard, the field offers the Tiffin University baseball tteam a great place to call home. The field is just 1.5 miles ffrom the Tiffin University campus and resides on 78 acres of lland that also house all the outdoor athletics teams at TU. Heminger Field is part of the Tiffin University Athletic Fields, which debuted in the fall of 1997. Also included are two softball fields, two soccer fields, two football practice fields, and a developing cross country course. Another new addition to the fields is the Athletic Fieldhouse. In addition, there is expanded parking accomodating hundreds of vehicles. An indoor practice facility is also in development.

The Tiffin University Physical Fitness Center Tiffin University baseball players enjoy using the Tiffin University Physical Fitness Center, yet another continually developing complex benefiting the student-athlete on Tiffin Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ever-growing campus. The facility features a 3-cage fully carpeted indoor hitting/pitching center with an attached weight room. Along with other athletic programs, the Fitness Center serves an integral purpose in helping Tiffinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s athletes reach their peak potential.

Share the Pride, Build on Tradition is a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffin University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investment by Tiffin University of more than $30 million in the Tiffin community.

Campaign Objectives Recreation Center $9,400,000 The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a field house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities. Other Campus Development $1,600,000 Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only reflects the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own growth and success, but also enhances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffin. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities. Endowed Student Scholarships $1,000,000 Without financial aid, many Tiffin University students could not afford higher education. Since over 80 percent of TU students receive some level of aid, TU leaders seek $1 million to bolster the endowment resources of the University to create additional student scholarships.
