Welcome... Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion, Ph. D. At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director

Tiffin Plans on Improvement in Second Season First year Head Coach Joey Simcoe has a plan for getting the young Tiffin University wrestling pro gram on the map. “My goals for th this year are to let people know that we are here,” said Simcoe. “We are very ffortunate to be located in the middle of the hotbed of high sch school wrestling in the state of Ohio, and many wrestlers don’t kn know that we are here yet. In my opinion the best way to build yo your program is to put people on the stand at the end of the seaso season. Being that we have not yet had a National Qualifier at Tiffinn, I am hoping to send 3 or 4 this year and put a couple of tthem on the All-American stand. Once we accomplish his goal this goal, the sky is the limit for what we will be able to accomplish.” TU has some top grapplers returning. Leading the way is Alek Hughes, who was 5th at Regionals in 2011 and just missed the National Tournament. Kyle Begg also returns after going 2-2 at regionals in 2011 and posting over 30 wins. These returners will be joined by newcomers Kevin Christman, Ryan McKenzie, and Jake Cramer. Christman transferred from Cumberland University where he redshirted as a freshman. He was Ohio State Runner-Up as a senior. McKenzie also comes from Cumberland where he was a two-time National Qualifier and two-time Tennessee state placer and runner-up. Cramer, meanwhile, is a three-time Ohio state qualifier, two-time placer, and runner-up his senior year. “We have a very young team consisting of two juniors and mostly freshmen or redshirt freshmen, but they train hard and are good kids who want to win,” noted Simcoe. “They are buying into the system that Coach Porter and I are trying to instill and they are going to reap the benefits at the end of the season.” Having an experienced coaching staff is also a benefit for the young program. “I am very happy and fortunate to have Dustin Porter on the coaching staff. He is currently ranked 10th in the US in the Senior Mens freestyle rankings and is training for the Olympic Qualifier at the end of March. Having a heavyweight coach of his caliber is a huge blessing not only for me but for our upper weights as well,” Simcoe said. “One thing that I am very proud of is how these guys have come together as a family. They are starting to hold each other accountable, and push each other from a peer level. on’t act like they are,” Although we are very young as a team, they don’t Simcoe finished.

Tiffin returns to action in 2011 when it hosts a tri-meet with Belmont Abbey and West Virginia Tech on Jan. 9.

Traveling the entire first two months of its first season as a collegiate wrestling program, Tiffin hosted its first regular season competition Sunday afternoon. Although the Dragons fell 36-9 to Belmont Abbey, they quickly rebounded for a dominant 34-12 win over West Virginia Tech as TU recorded four falls. "We wrestled very hard and very well on the day," head coach Doug Jesse said. "It was nice to have a couple guys back who were battling injury and a few who became eligible for the second semester. We're definitely happy with where we are at and I am starting to see the improvement from the beginning of the season until now. "Hopefully we can carry that momentum forward when we travel to Central Missouri this week," Jesse added. Freshmen Jordan Duckett and Kyle Begg both won a pair of matches on the day at 133 and 184, respectively, while Begg added a fall. Freshman Trevor Nickolai (157), sophomore Johnny Merryman (165) and sophomore Alek Hughes (197) all recorded pins and went 1-1 on the day. Freshmen Zane Goldberg (141) and Walid Boggio (174/184) also went 1-1 while classmates Alex Rivera (174/184) and Brian Gelter (285) both went 0-2 on the day. Down 6-0 out of the gate in their first collegiate match at home against Belmont Abbey, Tiffin stormed back to take a 9-6 lead. At 133, Duckett gave up an early takedown but got the escape and takedown for the lead. BA's Patrick Meztrez started down and tied the match in the second, but a takedown gave Duckett the lead for good. Meztrez recorded another escape, but Duckett had the 5-4 advantage and all but clinched the riding point. An escape, takedown and the bonus gave Duckett the 9-4 win. Goldberg knotted the match at 141. He came out and got the takedown and tilted Belmont Abbey's Will James to take the quick 5-0 advantage. One escape in the

final two periods and 1:08 of riding time gave Goldberg the 6-6 win. Begg blanked his opponent, 5-0, at 149 to give the Dragons their first ever lead. Begg got the first period takedown and stayed on top for the rest of the first and all of the second for essentially a 3-0 lead. Starting down in the third, Begg reversed Trey Alley for the 5-0 win to give Tiffin a 9-6 lead in the dual. From there, the Crusaders captured the final six matches to win 36-9. Nickolai took a slim 3-2 lead into the third, but a reverse and a takedown around an escape gave BA's Appolon Jean-Paul a 6-4 win to tie the score. Jake Verilek pulled out a 12-4 major to push the visitor's edge to 13-9 at 165, while a pin in 50 seconds by Ryan Gregory over Boggio at 174 gave Belmont Abbey the 19-9 advantage. Jeremee Brantley recorded the third-period tech fall at 184, 24-8 and a default win by Nick Rees over TU's Hughes pushed the Crusaders lead to 30-9. Kyle Spar added the fall in 2:33 at heavyweight to close out Tiffin's first ever home dual. Belmont Abbey won 36-9. In the nightcap, Tiffin took an early 6-0 advantage with a Duckett forfeit win at 133 and never looked back in a dominating 34-12 win over West Virginia Tech. After a close WVU decision at 141 cut the TU lead in half, Begg recorded the first home pin in the first period at 149. Begg got the early takedown and slowly worked to put WVT's Mark Cooper on his back for the pin in 2:51. The six-pointers continued at 157 and 165 for Tiffin as Nickolai pinned John Cardello in 2:24 while Merryman recorded the fall in 2:21 over Josh Vance. "I was happy with the way we did not let off the gas against West Virginia Tech. When we had guys on their back and they were in danger, we put those matches away. That's not something that happens with such a young team. In a few instances, that has occurred so finishing off opponents was good to see," Jessie said. Down 24-3, West Virginia Tech was able to slow Tiffin's momentum when Ben Wood recorded the 8-4 win at 174, but Boggio majored Mark Ward 16-4 at 184 to put the Dragons up 28-6. Hughes wasted

no time in recording the fastest Tiffin pin of the year (28 seconds) at 197 to give the Dragons a 34-6 advantage. The Golden Bears' Michael Cotterall pinned Gelter just before the horn in the first period at 285. Grapplers Shows Flashes of Brilliance In Loss to Findlay TIFFIN, Ohio - Head coach Doug Jesse knew his wrestlers had a tough assignment if Tiffin was to knock off the 15th-ranked team in the nation, but that does not mean the Dragons would go quietly. Carr got an escape in each period to tie the match, but Begg had the riding time and did not relent. Begg chose bottom for the third period and quickly pulled a three-point move to take a 5-2 advantage. Carr got the escape before time expired, but Begg made up for it with 1:58 of riding time for the 6-3 win. Findlay put the match out of reach with pins at 157, 165 and 174. Adam Walters got TU's Marco Gualtieri in 2:18 at 157 while Michael Lybarger pinned sophomore Johnny Merryman in 2:12. In the second, Hughes chose down and preserved his riding time by getting the early escape for the 3-0 advantage after two. minutes of riding time for the 4-1 upset win.

Thank you for your support of Tiffin University Athletics

Share the Pride, Build on Tradition is a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffin University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investment by Tiffin University of more than $30 million in the Tiffin community.

Campaign Objectives Recreation Center $9,400,000 The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a field house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities. Other Campus Development $1,600,000 Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only reflects the University’s own growth and success, but also enhances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffin. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities. Endowed Student Scholarships $1,000,000 Without financial aid, many Tiffin University students could not afford higher education. Since over 80 percent of TU students receive some level of aid, TU leaders seek $1 million to bolster the endowment resources of the University to create additional student scholarships.
