Welcome... We l c o m e t o t h i s a t h l e t i c s e a s o n a t Ti f f i n U n i v e r s i t y. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion, Ph. D. President
At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and tthe athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent yyears with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging aat national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have A sset new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the aathletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last ffive years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would bbe ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director

Joe Wilkins Head Coach J Joe Wilkins is in hhis first season as hhead coach at Tiffin University. U He is nno stranger to the pprogram having sserved as an assistant ccoach from 2006-07 aand 2011-12. IIn the past two s seasons as the p pitching coach, W Wilkins guided the staff in lowering the ERA from 7.30 to 5.08. He helped mentor Pat Curtin and Jordan Liette, two key contributors in last season’s first ever trip to the GLIAC Tournament. Curtin was the GLIAC Co-Player of the Year for his efforts on the mound, in the field and at the plate. On the mound, he was 5-1 with a 3.19 ERA. The Dragons went 14-2 in the last three weeks of the season and Liette was a major contributor. He was 4-0 with 29 strikeouts and just four walks for a 1.93 ERA in 28 innings. Wilkins, also responsible for helping the development of the catchers, saw K.C. Weber earn All-GLIAC honors. He caught in 43 games and hit .299. Weber was an extension of the coaching staff on the field and was as important as anyone in that stretch run. Wilkins was an assistant coach at Pepperdine (2010), where his responsibilities included training the catchers, helping to develop the offense and coaching first base. He helped second-year catcher Nate Johnson grind through a 54-game season in 2010, in which he caught all but one of 473.1 innings pitched and threw out 17 base runners - the fourth highest season total in school history. At the plate, Johnson led all Waves with nine home runs and 36 RBI en route to being named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention squad. Wilkins spent the 2009 season coaching the catchers at Wake Forest, where he tutored Cape Cod All-Star catcher Mike Murray. Murray has recently signed with the San Francisco Giants. Prior to working at WFU, Wilkins spent more than a year at the Florida-based IMG Academies where he worked under former
Cleveland Indians bench coach Ken Bolek as the full-time catching instructor. He helped in the development of 2009 New York Yankees second-round draft pick J.R. Murphy. Murphy hit .627 in the spring of 2009 with 11 home runs in 102 at-bats. He added 34 extra-base hits and struck out just four times. During his first stint at TU, Wilkins coordinated the recruiting efforts that helped in the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II and developed athletic marketing fundraising ideas to improve facilities. At Heminger Field, a new press box, back stop and prostyle seating have been added. A locker room, lounge area and coaches offices attached to the home dugout were completed in 2011. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Wilkins coached in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. In 2006, he was the third base coach and worked with the hitters, catchers, outfielders and infielders for the Delaware Cows. In 2007, Wilkins was the head coach for the Stark County Terriers. As head coach of the Terriers, he worked with players from such collegiate programs as Wake Forest, Kent State and Cincinnati. Wilkins began his coaching career at Dublin (Ohio) Scioto High School in 2005, working with the catchers and serving as the offseason hitting instructor. Wilkins earned four letters at Ohio State, earning All-Big-10 second team honors and being named the Most Outstanding Player at the Big Ten Tournament as a senior. His walk off home run vs. Indiana gave the Buckeyes the tournament title. OSU won two Big Ten regular season championships and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Super Regional appearance in 1999, during Wilkins’ collegiate career. Wilkins played professionally for three years, spending time in the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm systems. He led the Northwest League’s Yakima Bears in hitting in 2002. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Wilkins graduated from Ohio State in 2005 with a degree in human ecology and a specialization in consumer affairs. He earned his master’s of business administration in 2007 from Tiffin University.

TIFFIN LOOKS TO CARRY OVER SUCCESS Things were not looking so good for Tiffin as they were 6-14 in the GLIAC, ninth place with just three weeks left in the season. To say the G Dragons turned up the heat would be an understatement. TU won 14 of its last D 116 games and moved from seventh to fourth in the final two days of the season. Overall, Tiffin finished 20-16 in the GLIAC (4th) and was 25-26 overall. The O blazing finish put the Dragons in the GLIAC Tournament for the first time in b school history. s Tiffin will have some retooling to do as three of the top four hitters graduated. Among the losses was Co-GLIAC Player of the Year Pat Curtin and g fellow All GLIAC honorees Jordan Chiero and Val Helldobler. On the mound, f Curtin, Jordan Liette and Chris Pistorio combined to win 15 games. All three C have graduated as well. Another loss was the departure of head coach Lonny h Allen, Allen, who continues as Tiffin’s athletic director, was the winningest A coach in TU history. c However, the cupboard is not bare for first year head coach Joe Wilkins. He welcomes 21 letterwinners back including six starters. In addition, the Dragons return four players who batted .297 or better to the field. CATCHING Senior KC Weber, who earned All-GLIAC honors in 2012, is back behind the plate for the Dragons. Weber started 43 games, scoring 20 runs while throwing out 12 runners and hitting .299. Junior Mario Rodriguez could challenge for playing time. He hit .298 at Mott Community College (Mich.). INFIELD Seniors Tyler Glass and Jordan Stum return after hitting .297 or higher. Glass scored 19 runs, batted .315 and was third on the team, turning 13 double plays. Stum scored 12 runs and hit .297. Senior Roger Christensen led the team, turning 18 double plays and scoring 17 runs. Sophomore Nick Calandra and senior Tayler Glass saw a fair amount of playing time in 2012. Freshman Elijah Sanabria helped the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology (N.Y.) reach the PSAL Final Four for the first time ever. OUTFIELD Senior Ryan Williams returns after earning All-GLIAC second team honors. He had two triples, scored 18 runs, drove in 18 runs and batted .314. Among the returners, seniors Ryan Locke and Colin Sallee should see action for the Dragons. Freshmen Garrett Vernau and Cole McCurry are expected to challenge for playing time. Vernau was a twotime all-district selection who helped Newark Catholic High School (Ohio) reach the Final Four of the state championship twice. McCurry earned all-district and All-Ohio Capital Conference first team honors as Olentangy Orange High School (Ohio) went 27-4 and advanced to the regional championship. PITCHING On the mound, TU has seven players back who threw at least nine games last season. Senior Eric Klepper was second on the squad with three complete games and 41 strikeouts. Sophomore Greg Sombati had a solid rookie campaign, going 3-0 and recording three saves. Freshmen Logan Sendelbach and Mike Cooperider will be in the mix for time on the mound. Sendelbach was 2nd team All-Ohio Division IV after going 8-0 with 99 strikeouts and did not give up an earned run in 56 innings for Hopewell-Loudon High School (Ohio). Cooperider earned AllFederal League second team honors for Massillon Jackson High School (Ohio).

Tiffin University’s Heminger Field continued to expand in the offsseason before the 2012 season. The home of the Dragons received an iimproved backstop area with a nicely designed concrete wall and professsional nettting in place of chain link fence. The fan seating was completely reworked, with individual seats replacing bleachers directly behind the backstop in front of the newly designed press box and concession area. Also new for the 2012 season was the full renovation and expansion of the Dragons dugout area, with individual lockerrooms, baseball offices, and a lounge area directly connected to the Dragons’ dugout. The facility will continue to improve with the times as it becomes an integral part of making attending bbaseball games a great experience for Tiffin University fans. Tiffin University enjoys playing its home games at H Heminger Field. One of many attractive new facilities on ddisplay, Heminger Field is one of the top baseball fields in tthe region. With capacity for 500, enclosed bullpens, a new fully eequipped press box, a renovated backstop area with nettting, iimproved stadium seating, and a large outfield electronic sscoreboard, the field offers the Tiffin University baseball tteam a great place to call home. Also included are two softball fields, two soccer fields, two football practice fields, and a developing cross country course. Another new addition to the fields is the Athletic Fieldhouse. In addition, there is expanded parking accomodating hundreds of vehicles. An indoor practice facility is also in development.
