Welcome... Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion, Ph. D. President At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director

The Dragons went 45-2-1 in the AMC. The team was also ranked nationally from 1998-2000. 2009 Men’s Season Preview The first season in the GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) was successful for the men’s soccer team in 2008. They will be looking to sustain that success this coming season. The men’s soccer team is coming off a season where they went 13-6, finishing the season in strong fashion by winning their last three games to win the GLIAC Tournament Championship. The Dragons will look to replace some key losses from last year. Gone from the squad are Adi Vlad and Byron Kaverman, a pair of players that combined for ten goals and six assists last year. Tiffin has a good mix of experienced players that are ready to step in. One of the top returners is sophomore Ashton Campbell who was named Offensive Player of the Year in the GLIAC. Campbell finished with 8 goals and 6 assists for 22 points. Another top returner is sophomore Michael O’Neill who was second in points last year with 19. O’Neill was voted to the All Region team last year and twice was Player of the Week in the GLIAC. Tony Iyayi is also returning to the team and has contributed on the field with his leadership and offensive ability. Iyayi was on the All GLIAC First Team last season. On defense the top returner is Paul Brodnik. Paul was Second Team All GLIAC last year and looks to excel in his senior season. Tuomo Kallio and Gabriel Acha are a couple of other senior defenders who add experience to the Tiffin backfield. A talented freshmen class should also make an impact. Coach Brownell noted, “This recruiting class will have an impact on our cur2009 Schedule rent players, adding competition at every position.” Aug 29 Sept. 1 Sept. 6 Sept. 8 Sept. 13 Sept. 16 Sept. 18 Sept. 20 Oct. 2 Oct. 9 Oct. 11 Oct 13 Oct 17 Oct 21 Oct 23 Oct 31 Nov 1 Nov. 4 Nov 5 Nov 7 Nov 13 Nov 15

The goal for the Dragons is to reach the NCAA Tournament. Moving up in the regional rankings will be key to achieving that goal. The team just missed the cut last year. With the experience coming back mixed with the fresh new talent, this could be a combination that makes for a very successful season. This year the men will have a bigger target on their backs. After their big tournament win and an impressive spring the men’s team is voted to finish second in the GLIAC this season. The team voted first and their biggest competition this year is Ashland University. Ashland finished first last year in the regular season, but came up short in the postseason tourney. The rivalry between the two teams as well as the tough GLIAC competition overall should lead to an exciting season.

Paradiso Athletic Complex Tiffin University enjoys playing its home games at the Paradiso Athletic Complex. One of many attractive new facilities on display, the Paradiso Athletic Complex is one of the top soccer fields in the area. With warmup fields, a large outfield electronic scoreboard, a developing press box area, and team dugouts, the field offers the Tiffin University soccer teams a great place to call home. The field is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffin University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all the outdoor athletics teams at TU. The Paradiso Athletic Complex debuted in the fall of 1997. Also included are two softball fields, Heminger field, two football practice fields, a Nature Preserve, and a developing outdoor track and field facility. Another new addition to the fields is the Athletic Fieldhouse. In addition, there is expanded parking accomodating hundreds of vehicles. An indoor practice facility is also in development nearby.

2009 Women’s Season Preview The Tiffin University women’s soccer team will look to build off of a successful first year in the GLIAC, posting a 13-5-2 record in 2008 and reaching the NCAA National tournament. The Lady Dragons look to build on last year’s success and return a solid group of established and experienced team members. Head Coach Rudy Brownell, entering his seventh year coaching the women’s team, saw last year as a positive beginning to the program’s new era as a Division II member of the GLIAC. “Last year was a solid season for us where we did some things very well and could have improved in other ways,” said Brownell. “We’re looking to use last year as motivation.” Despite entering a new conference, the Lady Dragons established themselves quickly in 2008 as a team to be reckoned with. The team won its first five games of the season before dropping a 1-0 decision at Saginaw Valley. Tiffin finished the year strong, losing only one of its last six conference games, and ended the regular season with a 9-4-1 conference record and an opportunity to avenge earlier losses in conference play. In the conference semifinals, the Dragons faced Saginaw Valley, one of only two teams to defeat the Dragons during the regular season. Unfortunately, the team came up short, losing to Saginaw for the third time by a 2-1 margin. The Lady Dragons strong 13-5-1 overall record were enough to earn the team a spot in the National Tournament, where the Dragons faced a talented Quincy team. Battling to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods, the game came down to a shootout, with the Dragons season ending by a 4-3 margin. Despite losing a number of talented seniors from last season, the team looks for an experienced returning group to help bring along a talented class of incoming players. “We have a team philosophy that players hold themselves to,” said Coach Brownell, “and we’ll look for everyone to be ready to step up 2009 Schedule and contribute Sept. 3 Indianapolis 3:00 when needed.” Sept. 13 at University of Findlay 12:00 Sophomore Sept. 18 Saginaw Valley State 2:00 Sept. 20 Northwood University 12:00 Shelly Rogers Sept. 25 at Ferris State University 4:00 returns after Sept. 27 at Grand Valley State 12:00 being named Oct. 2 at Ashland University 5:00 GLIAC FreshOct. 4 Northern Michigan 12:00 man of the Year Oct. 9 at Saginaw Valley State 2:00 and posting 8 Oct. 11 at Northwood University 12:00 goals and nine Oct. 16 Ferris State University 2:00 assists in 2008, Oct. 18 Grand Valley State 12:00 while senior Oct. 23 Ashland University 2:00 Oct. 25 at Northern Michigan 12:00 defender Felicia Oct.29 at Davis & Elkins 1:00 Ruiz returns as Oct. 31 University of Findlay 12:00 a second-team all-conference player in 2008. The Dragons will look to build upon last year’s team play which saw them post six shutouts and outscore opponents 37-23. “We’re looking to continue pushing ourselves to play at the highest level possible,” said Coach Brownell. “As long as we work hard, play as a team, and stay focused, we have a chance to do some great things this year.”
