Welcome... Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion, Ph. D. President At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director

2010 Dragons Softball Preview The Tiffin University softball team enters the 2010 season looking to improve on a 23-25 record in their second year in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Second-year Head Coach Jeff Nickerson brings a solid group of young returners back to the diamond while also adding some key newcomers that he feels will give him a much improved offense. “We are still young but we have a year of experience which will be valuable,” Nickerson said. “Playing more as a team on defense with better communication and execution was our focus during the fall season and during spring practices. I feel we are further advanced at this time compared to last year and still working hard to improve even more.” The Lady Dragons feature a balanced team of veterans and talented newcomers. Sophomore second baseman Lauren Mazzuca and junior catcher Delaney Talmage return after All-Region and All-Conference campaigns last year. Mazzuca hit .327 to lead the starters, while Talmage hit .307 with a team-high 39 RBI. All-Conference selection Tiffany Smith (JR, 1B) also returns after hitting .321 with 9 HR and 38 RBI. Sophomore shortstop Meagan Baird (.254) is another returning infielder, while centerfielder Stephanie Bobotas (.243) also returns. Four newcomers should also crack the starting lineup, as third baseman Amanda Temple (SO), rightfielder Melodi Murrieta (JR), and leftfielder Alyssa Brown (FR, .334 at Hudson High School) will play the field. DP Lesy Herbert (FR) also brings her potent bat to the lineup after hitting .466 at Norwayne High School. The new additions should give the Dragons a well-rounded lineup that puts runs on the scoreboard. “Temple and Murrieta bring junior college experience and past success with them, while Brown and Herbert will also contribute to strengthen our team,” Nickerson said. “Our lineup this year should be much more consistent 1-9.” The pitching staff will feature two returners who saw limited action last year. Sophomore Abbey Cooksey (3-7, 6.67 ERA) is joined by sophomore Lexie Pinkleman (2-4, 6.75 ERA). “These two have worked very hard in the offseason to improve their game. They can both take their past experiences from last season and become successful this year,” Nickerson noted. Kelly Mayer (17-4, 0.61 ERA at Miami East High School), Amber Young (All-District at Johnstown Monroe High School), and Erika Davis (All-Conference at Minerva High School) also bring talent to the mound and will be counted on to contribute heavily in a versatile rotation. “I feel confident with all of our pitchers at this point and the upcoming season will determine their amount of pitching time. I believe that pitching can be another strength for us this season especially if we use two or three pitchers per game to keep opponents off balance,” said Nickerson.

The Diamond of the Dragons

Tiffin University enjoys playing its home games at the Tiffin University Athletic Complex. One of many recently developed facilities on display, the Diamond of the Dragons is a new and attractive addition to the softball fields of the American Mideast Conference. With capacity for 500, a separate junior varsity field, enclosed bullpens, and a large outfield electronic scoreboard, the field offers the Tiffin University softball team a great place to call home. The field is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffin University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all the outdoor athletics teams at TU. The fields, which debuted in the fall of 1997, also include a baseball field, two soccer fields, and two football practice fields. Also new to the fields is Tiffin University’s Athletic Fieldhouse. In addition, there is expanded parking accomodating hundreds of vehicles.
