Tiffin University 2011 Media Guide
Welcome... Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field.
Paul Marion, Ph. D. President
At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen

2011 Tiffin University Season Preview Some familiar faces will return to the Tiffin University football team in 2011. But it is the new faces and approaches both on and off the field that has the team excited for the new season. After the Dragons 1-10 campaign in 2010, then Head Coach Dave Walkosky departed, making way for new head coach Gary Goff to step in and take the reins. Goff, who brings with him nine years of collegiate coaching experience, also brings a new offensive and defensive philosophy to the program. Most recently serving as the Offensive Coordinator at West Virginia Wesleyan, Goff spent the spring implementing the Air Raid Offense, which was responsible for breaking 12 West Virginia Wesleyan offensive records last year along. This new high-powered offense will give the Tiffin Dragon faithful something fun and exciting to watch this fall. Offensively the Dragons will be led by transfer James Capello. Capello, who played at Iowa State last year, was the 2008 Pennsylvania Class AAA Player of the Year at Lebanon High School. He will be throwing to a bounty of experienced receivers, led by Brendton Williams. Williams, a junior receiver from Cincinnati, Ohio, earned All-GLIAC Honorable Mention honors last year when he caught 34 passes for 610 yards and 6 touchdowns. Also returning at wide receiver are Darrion Brown and Nate Scully, who combined for 19 catches, 253 yards and two touchdowns. In the backfield, two returning starter running backs - David McKnight and Taurean Nicholson - who accounted for almost 97 percent of TU’s total rushing yards last season, will see their production increase not only on the rushing side but in receiving yards as well. Some of the biggest changes for the Dragons could be on the offensive line, as Goff and the coaching staff have brought in close to 20 offensive linemen to camp. Top returners are senior guard Gage Gorman (6-3, 300), sophomore guard Derrick Stark (6-1, 290), and senior center Nick Gilbert (6-3, 270). Many of the new linemen in camp will have the chance to make their impact felt immediately. The Dragons will also feature competition at the kicking position, as they have 8 kickers entering camp. Defensively, Tiffin also has significant talent returning, as the top five tacklers return. The defense will be led by a pair of All-GLIAC performers in Joe Collard and Mike Virgin. Collard, a sophomore defensive end, shared the team league in total tackles with 85. He also tied the school record with 19 tackles for a loss, which led the GLIAC and was ranked eighth in NCAA Division II. Other top linemen returning are Michael Debesay (14 tackles), and Dewon Tufts (28 tackles). Virgin, a junior defensive back from Vermillion, Ohio, shared the team league in total tackles with 85. He picked off five passes and returned them for 84 yards, which ranks among the top five in school history for return yardage. Logan Snell also returns in the secondary after posting 48 tackles, while Vincent Noble (37 tackles) and Anthony Thomas (30 tackles) also bring experience to the secondary. At linebacker, Phil Morris will have an immediate impact. Morris made the transition to linebacker from running back in the spring. He will be joined by returner William Cook (45 tackles, 4.5 for loss) and Kody David (64 tackles, 6.5 for loss, 3 sacks). A talented group of freshmen and transfers will push for playing time this fall. Overall the Dragons open with three road games, including a nonconference game with Malone at the Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio on Sept. 1 at 7:30 pm before starting theiri 10-game GLIAC schedule. TU goes to Wayne State on Sept. 10 and Findlay on Sept. 17 before opening at home Sept. 24 against Ferris State. After going to Grand Valley State on Oct. 1, TU returns home for four of their final six games, hosting Ashland (Oct. 8), Northwood (Oct. 15), Lake Erie (Nov. 5), and Hillsdale (Nov. 12) while making road trips to Ohio Dominican (Oct. 22) and Northern Michigan (Oct. 29). 6
Tiffin University is a proud member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tiffin University is the league’s 14th full member and sponsors 18 of the GLIAC’s 20 championship sports. The Dragons, who never trailed in the game, opened scoring with an 11-play, 77 yard drive to start the game, capping it off with a 9-yard run by running back David McKnight at the 9:35 mark. Malone answered at the 1:40 mark of the first quarter with an 82 yard drive of their own, with Matt Kiel catching a 3-yard pass from Logan Francis to knot the score at 7-7. The Dragons answered immediately with a 9-play, 78 yard drive at the start of the second quarter, with Brendton Williams hauling in a sensational 40 yard TD reception from quarterback Nate Scully at the 11:54 mark and putting TU back up 14-7. Malone returned the favor with 6:01 on the clock, as running back Marcus McFolling grinding out an 18 yard run to tie the score at 14-14. TU refused to back down before the half, as kicker Mike Rutkowski capped off a 55 yard drive with a 41 yard field goal with just 18 seconds left on the clock in the first half and giving the Dragons a 17-14 lead heading into the halftime break. The third quarter proved critical for the Dragons, as they scored twice late in the period to give themselves a substantial lead late in the game. Trey Williams caught a 13 yard pass in the corner of the end zone at the 4:52 mark to jump ahead 24-14. But the Dragons were not done yet, as defensive back Mike Virgin stopped a driving Malone offense with an 84-yard interception return at the 4:09 mark for a touchdown that catapulted TU to a 31-14 lead. Virgin had a superb game, registering 9 tackles with 2 interceptions in the game. Malone did manage to score on a 17 yard pass from Matt Kiel to Ryan Boland with 14:57 left in the game, but they were unable to get any closer, as a swarming Dragons defense registered 6 sacks in the game. Kody David had 7 tackles, 3 for loss with 2 sacks, while DeJuan Graham and Doug Marshall also had sacks. Seven different Dragons were in on Malone sacks. TU had 11 tackles for loss along with three interceptions. Scully had a strong game passing the ball, completing 18 of 25 passes for 253 yards and 2 TDs with just one interception. Trey Williams had 9 catches for 116 yards while David Singleton also had 7 catches for 78 yards and Brendton Williams added 59 more yards on 2 receptions. David McKnight had 85 tough rushing yards while Rutkowski was perfect with 4 PATs and a 41 yard field goal. Williams and Singleton also combined for 280 all-purpose yards.
Dragons fall hard in GLIAC opener with Wayne State The Dragons were able to hold the Warriors to only seven points in the first quarter, but a 42-point outburst by Wayne State (2-0, 1-0 GLIAC) in the second quarter turned in to a 63-14 win over Tiffin (1-1, 0-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at soggy Frost-Kalnow Stadium. While Wayne State topped Tiffin in total yards (461-223), the Dragons outgained the Warriors through the air 196-174. Individually for the Dragons, Nate Scully was 11-for-23 with 159 yards and three interceptions. Brendton Williams led all receivers in the game with six catches for 138
yards. Kody David led the TU defense with 10 tackles, including the only Tiffin sack of the game. Leading the Warriors were running backs Toney Davis and Josh Renel with three touchdowns apiece. Davis had 14 carries for 140 yards while Renel ran for 89 yards on 18 carries. WSU quarterback Mickey Mohner was 7-for-13 for 164 yards and one touchdown with one interception thrown. For the second straight game, Tiffin had a return for a touchdown. With Mike Virgin turning in an interception return for a score against Malone, the Dragons’ David Singleton returned a kickoff 88 yards with just under two minutes left in the second half against Wayne State.
Both teams failed to score on the first possession of the game, but a Scully
interception led to Wayne State’s first score of the game in the first quarter. Six of the seven plays were Renel carries for a total of 38 yards, combined with a 11-yard completion to Troy Burrell, leading to Wayne State taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. In the first 8:06 of the second quarter, the Warriors used a blocked field goal, an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble as a catalyst for 35 points to take a 42-0 lead. However, Singleton answered for the Dragons, eluding tacklers on an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 3:54 remaining in the first half. WSU added another touchdown to take a 49-7 lead to the locker room. Coming out of intermission, Tiffin put together an impressive drive for a score. After a pair of rushes by Taurean Nicholson for 12 yards, Scully found Trey Williams for 19 yards to give Tiffin a first and goal at the WSU 9. The Warriors closed the game as second-string QB Zack George found Danny McKae for a 10-yard touchdown for the final 63-14 score.
Dragons comeback falls short vs. Findlay 10-7
The Dragons’ fourth quarter rally attempt ran out of time as Findlay (1-2, 1-1) scored the first 10 points of the game and held on for the 10-7 win over Tiffin (1-2, 0-2) Saturday afternoon (Sept. 18) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivalry game at Frost-Kalnow Stadium. Kenny Klatt added nine tackles for the Oiler defense. Both teams failed to score on each of their first six possessions before Tiffin threatened near the end of the first. On third and 14 on the TU 14, Tiffin’s Scully was flushed out of the pocket but found Singleton at the Findlay 31
27
and weaved his way for an apparent touchdown. However, the official in the secondary called illegal block in the back to push the Dragons back to the UF 41. Tiffin was able to convert another fourth down, but it came away with no points when Mike Rutkowski’s 34 yard field goal attempt just sailed wide. Findlay answered the next series with a field goal to go into intermission up 3-0. Findlay went up 10-0 with a touchdown drive in its opening possession of the third quarter. Tiffin looked as if it survived the UF scoring threat when Cameron Stevens pushed a 36 yard field goal to the left, but a running into the kicker call on the Dragons gave Findlay a first down. Three plays later, Monterae Williams rumbled into the end zone from the one to put the visitors up by 10. Tiffin added its own scoring drive in the fourth. Young began the drive at the 9:18 mark and hit Marquez and Trey Williams for a total of 25 yards to the Findlay 43. After Young found Marquez for another 21 yards, he threw two incomplete passes to face a third and 10 from the UF 24. On the ensuing play, Young found his favorite target, Marquez, for 14 and two yards, respectively, to bring up second and goal from the eight. On the next play, Young found Brendton Williams all alone in the end zone to bring the Dragons within a field goal with 6:06 remaining. Findlay went three and out to give Tiffin one more chance, and on first down from the TU 34, Young found Marquez again for 11 yards. However, the drive stalled and Tiffin was forced to punt. Findlay was able to pick up a trio of first downs to run out the final 2:41 remaining in the game.

As Walkosky has done three previous times this season, he chose to go for the first down. And for the fourth time, the Dragons converted, thanks to a two-yard run by McKnight. After a four-yard loss and an incomplete pass, Young found Trey Williams in the corner of the end zone for the exclamation point, using up 7:42 of the clock on the game’s initial drive. On TU’s initial drive of the second quarter, Singleton returned the kickoff 42 yard to the FS 45. Four plays later from the 10, Young found Singleton for 10 yards to bring TU within a pair. However, the two-point conversion pass attempt fell short. After a TU stop on the next Ferris State possession, Tiffin took a quick 18-14 lead. Starting on its own 49, Tiffin gained one yard in two plays to face a third and nine at midfield. Young hooked up with Brendton Williams on a deep out pass for 50 yards and the Dragon touchdown. The conversion rush attempt failed and Tiffin led by four with 1:27 remaining in the half. Ferris State answered right before half to wrestle the lead back from TU. On first down from its own 26, Schneider scrambled 24 yards to reach midfield. After a 23-yard pass play, Schneider found Wilson for the 27-yard score and the sixth touchdown between the two teams in the first half. But the Bulldogs had a 21-18 lead into intermission thanks to a trio of extra points.

The Bulldogs took control of the game with 17 straight points at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth. Tiffin did manage to cut the deficit to 38-28 thanks to an 86-yard drive orchestrated by Young. After falling behind by 17 points, the Dragons got on the board in a dramatic way when Brendton Williams broke through the line and blocked a Wildcats’ punt, then picked it up and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown to make the score 17-7. After NMU responded with a 33 yard field goal on their next possession, Tiffin fired back with one big play, a 55-yard touchdown reception by David Singleton off a short pass from Jason Young. Singleton broke around right end and streaked down the sideline for the TD, bringing the Dragons to within 6 points at 20-14. The Wildcats bounced right back before halftime, taking their next possession and putting together a 6 play, 67 yard drive and scoring with 14 seconds left to make the score 27-14 at the half. Tiffin could not get on track in the second half as Northern Michigan continued a solid power running game, putting up 16 more second-half points while keeping TU off the board.
29
Overall NMU outrushed TU 327 to -53 yards, and 385-128 in total offense. The Wildcats controlled the ball with 25 first downs to TU’s 8, including a 23-1 edge in rushing first downs. The Dragons also had 5 turnovers in the game with 4 interceptions while also allowing 5 sacks.
Dragons comeback effort falls just short against Chargers
Singleton had 76 yards receiving on 5 catches with a TD and 160 all-purpose yards, while Darrion Brown had 2 catches for 52 yards. Young finished with 181 yards passing on 13 of 25 passes with 4 interceptions.
Tiffin University’s football team wrapped up the 2010 season with a narrow 31-24 loss to 14th-ranked Hillsdale, nearly coming back with 21 fourth quarter points before falling in the closing seconds.
Defensively, Logan Snell had 15 tackles, Mike Virgin had 13 tackles and 2 for loss, and Chase Barnes had 12 tackles. Joseph Collard also had 9 tackles with 2.5 for loss.
The Dragons defense played tough during a close first half, not allowing any first quarter points before the Chargers finally broke through for 17 points in the second quarter. Hillsdale led at the half 17-0.
Dragons fall just short at Lake Erie 31-27
Mike Rutkowski got TU on the board at 12:13 of the third quarter, drilling a 37 yard field goal to make it 17-3.
Tiffin University battled throughout the game but came up just short in a narrow 31-27 loss at Lake Erie, falling to 1-9, 0-9 in the GLIAC.
Hillsdale tacked 14 more points on the scoreboard before the end of the third quarter, taking a comfortable 31-3 lead into the fourth quarter. But Tiffin was not ready to concede the game just yet.
The Dragons and Storm played tough defense against each other throughout the first half before both teams turned up the offense in a back-and-forth second half that came down to the closing minutes of the game. Lake Erie got on the board first, hitting a 60 yard touchdown pass at 5:22 of the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Tiffin answered just before halftime when Brendton Williams hauled in a 7 yard TD pass from Jason Young, completing a 9 play, 79 yard drive with 2:08 to play in the half. Score at the half stood at 7-7. Things started out well for the Dragons in the third quarter. Mike Rutkowski drilled two 30 yard field goals just minutes apart to give TU a 13-7 lead at the 10:50 mark. But Lake Erie bounced back, capping a 5 play, 81 yard drive with a 5 yard touchdown run to retake the lead at 14-13. They then kicked a 28 yard field goal at the 5:41 mark to take a 17-13 lead. The Dragons next possession proved critical to the outcome of the game. The Dragons drove down the field, gaining a first and goal from the Lake Erie 1 yard line and appeared poised to retake the lead. But a personal foul and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved TU back to the Lake Erie 33 yard line, out of field goal range and giving the Dragons an uphill climb to put it in the end zone. After failing on fourth down to score, the Dragons caught a break as Lake Erie was whistled for roughing the passer, giving TU a first down at the 15 yard line. But on the next play, Tiffin fumbled during a rush and Lake Erie recovered, a huge momentum shift that the Storm took advantage of by driving 79 yards in 8 plays and scoring at 12:24 of the fourth quarter to take a 24-13 lead. The Dragons refused to die, however, as Trey Williams caught a 14 yard touchdown pass from Young and then caught the 2-point conversion pass to bring TU back to within three points at 24-21 with 8:40 to play. Lake Erie did what it had to do, taking the next possession and breaking a big 40 yard touchdown run off at 4:15 of the fourth quarter to jump back ahead 31-21. Tiffin’s Young kept hopes alive, hooking up with Nate Scully on a 41 yard touchdown pass that figured to get the Dragons back to within three. But the extra point was missed, putting TU down 31-27 with 2:42 to play. Tiffin failed to recover the onside kick, and Lake Erie was able to run out the clock for the win. Young led the Tiffin offense, which was outgained in total offense 485-328. Young accounted for 251 of those yards through the air on 20 of 28 passing with just 1 interception and 3 touchdowns. Trey Williams had 85 yards on 9 catches, while Jonathan Marquez also had 86 yards receiving on 5 catches. Defensively Joseph Collard had 9 tackles, Bob Edwards had 9 tackles, A.J. Brewer had 8 tackles, and Logan Snell and Mike Virgin had 7 tackles each.

Jason Young completed a 6-play, 69 yard drive at 13:48 of the fourth quarter by running in the score from 1-yard out to make it 31-10. He continued his solid day by hooking up with David Singleton on an 80 yard bomb at 4:17 to bring TU to within 14 points at 31-17. The Dragons got to within one score when Brendton Williams grabbed a 34 yard pass from Young, capping a 7 play, 96 yard drive with 54 seconds left to make the score 31-24. The game then came down to TU recovering the onside kick, but Hillsdale picked up the short kick and then ran out the clock. Overall Hillsdale outgained TU 500-371 and 33-14 in first downs. TU had success with the pass throughout the day, as Young finished with 279 yards on 14 of 26 passing and no interceptions, passing for 2 TDs and rushing for another. Singleton had 178 all-purpose yards, including 115 yards receiving on 6 catches. Football Facilities Frost-Kalnow Stadium
Tiffin University enjoys playing its home football games at Frost-Kalnow Stadium, a recently renovated facility that seats 4,500 and is recognized as one of the premier football stadiums in Northwest Ohio. The stadium is shared by Tiffin University, Columbian High School and Calvert High School, and was originally built by Franklin Roosevelt’s WPA during the 1930s. Recently millions of dollars were spent in the renovation of the existing structure and the installation of state-ofthe-art artificial turf.
Paradiso Fields
The Dragons also have a large practice facility at the Tiffin University Athletic Fields, a recently developed property close to the TU campus. The location is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffin University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all of the outdoor athletics teams at TU. The Athletic Fields, which debuted in the Fall of 1997, feature a baseball field, two softball fields, two soccer fields, an outdoor track facility, and two football practice fields.
Physical Fitness Center
TU also enjoys using the Tiffin University Physical Fitness Center, yet another recently expanded facility benefiting the student-athlete on TU’s ever-growing campus. The facility, which recently doubled in size, features a cutting-edge weight center that is continually upgraded with new equipment.

Share the Pride, Build on Tradition
is a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffin University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investment by Tiffin University of more than $30 million in the Tiffin community.
Campaign Objectives
Recreation Center $9,400,000 The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a field house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities. Other Campus Development $1,600,000 Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only reflects the University’s own growth and success, but also enhances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffin. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities. Endowed Student Scholarships $1,000,000 Without financial aid, many Tiffin University students could not afford higher education. Since over 80 percent of TU students receive some level of aid, TU leaders seek $1 million to bolster the endowment resources of the University to create additional student scholarships.
