Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion President At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director Lonny Allen...Athletic Director, Head Baseball Coach Pam Oswald...SWA, Head Women’s Basketball Coach John Hill...Head Coach - Men’s Basketball Darby Roggow...Asst. Head Coach T.J. Shouse T.J. Shouse enters his fourth season as Head Coach of the Tiffin University Volleyball program. Shouse, who has a career record of 60-54, led the Dragons to a recordsetting 35-10 record in his debut season of 2006. That squad set a new single season wins record while also setting a new team assists mark. Prior to coming to Tiffin, Shouse spent eight seasons serving as Assistant Coach at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania . While at Slippery Rock, Shouse served as Recruiting Coordinator and top assistant coach. While at Slippery Rock, Shouse helped lead the squad to its best season since 1994 with a 24-10 overall record and the program’s first NCAA playoff appearance since 2000. He has also worked with numerous AllConference and All-Region players while also fostering academic excellence. He helped Slippery Rock volleyball players garner 17 Scholar Athlete honors over the last three years while maintaining a team GPA of 3.00 or higher over the same span. Shouse has a Bachelor’s degree in English-Creative Writing and a Master of Arts in English from Slippery Rock.
Assistant Coach Jill Howard Jill Howard begins her first season as Dragons Assistant Coach. Howard is originally from Fairborn, Ohio, where she was an accomplished high school athlete. Her athletic and academic successes led her to Division III Hiram College, and while she began her college career as a setter, she finished as a highly decorated libero. Twice during her career the Terriers made the NCAA tournament, and Howard graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education while holding the school’s career records for digs and service aces. Howard served the last two years for Division III Marietta College as the Women’s Volleyball Assistant Coach, with the Pioneers posting a 16-17 record in 2008. Howard will work as the team’s Recruiting Coordinator, along with primarily working with the team’s setters and defensive specialists.
The Tiffin University Lady Dragons look to rebound from a difficult first year in the GLIAC, where the team struggled to a 2-14 conference record. Despite an overall record of 14-19, the team will look for greater success with a strong group of returning players and one season of play in one of the stronger conferences in the nation under their belt. Said fourth-year Head Coach T.J. Shouse, “It was a big adjustment for us entering such a tough conference, but we feel more confident and comfortable with our level of play after a year of experience.” The Dragons posted a strong start to the season, posting an 8-1 record before entering conference play. However, the GLIAC did not treat Tiffin kindly, with the Lady Dragons dropping their first six conference games before defeating Northwood at home in four. “We started slowly in conference games and it took some time to realize just what was needed to give ourselves a chance,” said Coach Shouse. The Dragons were looking to close the season strong after posting a win against local rival Findlay at home, but the team fell in its final five games to finish at 14-19. “We had opportunities available and gave them away,” said Coach Shouse, “and hopefully we’ll use those experiences to better our performance this year.” The young Dragons will have only one senior on the roster, outside hitter Nikki Cranick, who has appeared in over 100 matches during her career. All-conference middle hitter Brittany Teaford returns for her junior year after leading the team in blocks and hitting percentage last year. Junior outside hitter Brooke Bernabei has led the Dragons in kills in each of her two years, eclipsing the 300-kill mark for the second straight year while finishing second on the team in digs. Junior Jessica Adams and sophomore Lindsay Heller will also look to build on solid 2008 campaigns, where they led the team in assists and digs, respectively. Overall, the young Lady Dragons will hope to continue to develop and climb the ranks of the conference in hopes of contending for a playoff berth.
