Welcome... Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion, Ph. D. At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director

2010-11 Season Preview The 2009-2010 Tiffin University Women’s basketball team experienced both the highs and the lows that come with playing every team in the GLIAC. The 7-20 squad saw 8 of its losses come down to single digits. They experienced two blowout losses to Grand Valley State University and Hillsdale College only to play them again and come within minutes of two possible upsets. The Dragons were able to pull off four big wins in their second year in the conference. The Dragons found out that the learning curve in the GLIAC is depth and experience. The Dragons started the season off on a rocky note after losing their most experienced player, Holly Focke, to a knee injury and also, senior Lexi Karel to a knee injury. Playing with one senior, 2 sophomores, and 6 freshman, third year head coach Pam Oswald had no choice but to throw her young players into the fire. Tiffin started the year out 4-5 with wins versus conference foe Ferris State and future conference opponent Lake Erie College, while suffering losses to preseason top 25 Grand Valley State and #8 ranked Gannon University. The Dragons then learned that versus a very tough and experienced conference, youth can contend in games but experience is what pulls you through. The Dragons would go on to win 3 more conference games against Saginaw Valley State, Wayne State, and Northwood University. The team showed on many occasions that they can score fast and in bunches erasing a 12 point deficit against Findlay in just over four minutes and a 17 point deficit against Saginaw Valley State in just over 7 minutes. This year’s squad boasts seven new faces thrown into the mix but also has seven very experienced returnees. Every returning player on this year’s team has started at least 5 games and has played in over 300 minutes. Junior guard Mandy Jaeb looks to add to her breakout season from a year ago and provide an immediate scoring threat to any opponent she faces. Junior Holly Focke is looking to rebound from her knee injury a year ago and provide her on court leadership. Sophomore post player Jessica Harris provides a viable low post presence that can score and take control of the boards. Junior guard Jennifer Johnston and sophomore guard Karli Mast have proven that they can stack on the points in a very short amount of time. Sophomore’s Steph Kelly and Missy Gilliland look to bring their quickness and knowledge of the system to both the point guard and shooting guard positions. Looking to step in and make their marks for the Dragons are junior transfers Deidra Brown and Jessika Korzelius, and incoming freshman Mary Kate Campbell, Amanda Baute, Dani Gilmer, Jillian Adams, and Brittany Siegel. BACKCOURT The returning core of this year’s team lies in the backcourt. Again the backcourt is very young but experienced, with 3 juniors, 3 sophomores, and 2 freshmen. Junior Mandy Jaeb had one of the best seasons in Tiffin University history last season being selected to both the All-GLIAC South First Team and All GLIAC Defensive Team. Junior Jennifer Johnston and sophomore Karli Mast both started in 20+ games and were among the leaders on the team in 3 pt. field goa al goal percentage. Sophomores Steph Kelly and Melissa Gilliland both started in multiple games last season but were both keyy sparks off the bench. Junior Deidra Brown is new to the Dragon system but has two years of college basketball experience and looks to bump up the level of athleticism at Tiffin. Freshmen Brittany Siegel and Jillian Adams look to build upon the guard core by bringing their energy and uniqueness to the Dragons. Junior guard Mandy Jaeb was not only the leader in many statistical categories for the Dragons but was in the top of many categories in the GLIAC. Jaeb was the leading scorer in the GLIAC and top ten in the country, scoring 19.5 ppg. Mandy also led the GLIAC in minutes per game at 35.8, was top ten in assists at 3.2 apg, 11th in free throw percentage at 80%, top ten in steals at 1.8 spg, 11th in 3 pt. field goal percentage at 37.5%, and top ten in assist to turnover ratio. Jaeb scored 20 or more points on 15 different occasions and twice eclipsed the 30 point mark. As good as Mandy is on the offensive side of the ball, she is considered one of the top defensive players also by landing on the All GLIAC Defensive Team. Jaeb’s work ethic and demeanor shows why she is such a dynamic player and key factor in the Dragons future.

J Junior Jennifer Johnston stepped into a more prominent role last in sseason at the guard position. Jen’s aability to shoot and score in bunches hhas helped the Dragons in key situaations in the past. This past season aat Findlay, Jen single handedly jump sstarted the Dragons when she scored 111 points in just over 2 minutes to bbring a 17 point lead by the Oilers to 8. Johnston was ranked 6th in the GLIAC in 3 pt. field goal percentage G aat 39%. This off season Jen has conccentrated on her defensive abilities to help her become a well rounded pplayer. Sophomore shooting guard Karli S Mast was the second leading scorer M from last season’s team. Mast played fr in all 27 games last season with 20 sstarts. Karli not only has the ability to hit from 3 feet behind the arc but is very solid at hitting the 15 foot jumper as well. Karli showed her ju ooverall ability versus Ferris State University where she had 13 points, U 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists in a come from behind victory. Karli’s ddesire to become a complete player has her working very hard this off season on her defensive skills. Sophomore combo guard Melissa Gilliland was a defensive spark off the bench a year ago. Starting in 5 games last season, Melissa looks to use that experience in the upcoming year. Gilliland turned two steals into the start of a 17 to 1 run in a victory at Ferris State University. Melissa has been working very hard on her shot and looks to be more of an offensive threat this season. Sophomore Stephanie Kelly played a valuable role last season of backing up Mandy Jaeb at the point guard position. Kelly showed signs of her potential with 4 steals against #8 Gannon University and hitting three in a row from behind the arc against Ferris State. Steph gained valuable experience last season playing in all 27 games and starting in 8. Steph looks to become more of a one on one defensive stopper this season for the Dragons. With the addition of junior Deidra Brown, freshman Jillian Adams, and freshman Brittany Siegel, is the expectation for them to step in and challenge at the guard positions.

FRONTCOURT F T Dragon frontcourt this season sees some new faces and welcomes The bback a familiar face to it’s make up. Tiffin returns sophomore post JJessica Harris who was second in the GLIAC a year ago in rebounding aand third in blocked shots per game. Junior Holly Focke is welcomed bback to the line-up after suffering a knee injury last November. Junior JJessika Korzelius brings her two years of playing experience to the Dragons from Santa Ana CC in California. Looking to make an imD mediate impact this season are freshmen Dani Gilmer, Amanda Baute, m aand Mary Kate Campbell. Harris is the returning anchor down low for the Dragons. HarJ Jessica rris is led the team in rebounds averaging 9.6 per game, blocked shots ((38), 38), and was second in steals (29). Harris really turned her game on towards to owards the middle of the season where she posted a double-double in 7 games. Jess looks to build on last season’s performances and become a dominant scorer on the block this season. Focke returns to the Dragons this season after suffering a knee H Holly injury in njury in an exhibition game versus Miami (OH) last season. As a ssophomore, Focke averaged nearly 7 ppg while also being second on the th he team in rebounding at 6 rpg, third in steals with 34, and second in aassists with 75 with 11 blocked shots. Holly looks to regain form and provide the Dragons with the court experience that she possesses. Rounding out the Dragons frontcourt are junior transfer Jessika Korzelius and freshmen Amanda Baute, Mary Kate Campbell, and Dani Gilmer. Each look to step in right away and solidify the post positions THE SCHEDULE The Dragons 2010-2011 campaign begins November 15th on the road at Slippery Rock University. On November 19th and 20th, Tiffin will host the Dragon Classic against Alderson Broaddus College (WV) on Friday and Mercyhurst College (PA) on Saturday. Three days later on November 23rd the Dragons welcome Clarion University to the Gilmor Student Center. The Dragons will then hit the road on December 8th against perennial powerhouse Northern Kentucky University. Tiffin wraps up their non-conference schedule at Salem International University on December 30th and Central State University on January 31st in Wilberforce, OH. The Dragons kick off their 3rd season in the GLIAC in Big Rapids, Michigan versus Ferris State University.

OSWALD

4th season head coach Berlin, Ohio Malone ‘95 Pam Oswald is entering her fourth season as the head coach of the Dragons women’s basketball team for the upcoming 2009-10 season Last season Oswald led Tiffin to a 7-20 record in their second full season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. During the 2009-10 season Tiffin posted a 7-20 record but proved much more competitive than the previous season, dropping 8 of those games by 9 points or less. The team posted a 4-118 mark in conference play, with most of those close losses coming against GLIAC opponents. In three years as an assistant coach at Wheeling Jesuit University, she helped the Cardinals compile an impressive 67-26 record—with two back to back seasons of 20 plus wins. Oswald’s contributions at Wheeling Jesuit saw the Cardinals post their most wins since 1992-93 (27), and advance to the NCAA Tournament twice— a first in the programs history. They also captured the 2005 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship. During the 2005-06 season Oswald stepped in as interim head coach for ten games, racking up an impressive 9-1 record during WVIAC play. Under Oswald’s tutelage six players were selected as All-WVIAC honorees. Prior to joining the Cardinals, Oswald spent three seasons (2001-2004) as an assistant coach at Kent State University. During her time at Kent State she worked with both guards and post players (developing two All-MAC selection post players). While at Kent State the Golden Flashes were the 2002 Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament champions, participating in the NCAA tournament in 2002 & the WNIT in 2004. A native of Berlin, OH Oswald joined the Flashes after spending 2 seasons as an assistant at her alma-mater Berlin-Hiland High School where she helped coach them to a 28-0 record and a Division IV State Championship in 2000. A 1995 graduate of Malone College in Canton, OH, Oswald was inducted into the Malone Athletic Hall of Fame in January of 2006 with a career total of 1,681 points and 1,127 rebounds. Oswald holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications/Broadcast.

Records and History Tiffin University’s women’s basketball program has underwent numerous changes in the 90-plus years that the Dragons have had basketball. The women’s team saw action sporadically during the first two decades of this century, but started to play a regular schedule in 192425, finishing 10-0 that year. The program continued until the close of the 1936-37 season, posting a 54-28-3 record during that stretch. Dragons leaders included Hall of Famer Edith Miller. The program didn’t return for another 48 years. In 1984-85, women’s basketball finally returned to Tiffin University, posting a winning record in its third year after returning (12-11 in 1986-87). In 1990-91, TU won its only Mid-Ohio Conference title, finishing 18-9 that season under Annette Kessler in her first season with the program. The Dragons also currently have seven women’s basketball players in the Tiffin University Hall of Fame - Edith Yambert Miller, Lois Collins Conrad, Tracy Almanson-Murphy, Angie Shardo Nunn, Susan Miller Hughes, Jenny Kane, and Melanie Sears. Seven years ago the Dragons earned their first ever NAIA National Tournament trip under coach Leslie Mugg. Angie Nunn is the Dragons’ all-time leading scorer with 1820 points, while Tracy Almanson is the leading rebounder with 802. But this season’s Dragons have many players who could easily change the face of the TU women’s basketball record books before their careers are through.

Lady Dragons Hall of Famer Lois Conrad holds the NAIA record with 28 free throws in a single game. She also is the season record holder in the same category (199).

Angie Shardo scored 1820 points, a career record.

Individual Career

Share the Pride, Build on Tradition is a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffin University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investment by Tiffin University of more than $30 million in the Tiffin community.

Campaign Objectives Recreation Center $9,400,000 The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a field house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities. Other Campus Development $1,600,000 Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only reflects the University’s own growth and success, but also enhances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffin. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities. Endowed Student Scholarships $1,000,000 Without financial aid, many Tiffin University students could not afford higher education. Since over 80 percent of TU students receive some level of aid, TU leaders seek $1 million to bolster the endowment resources of the University to create additional student scholarships.
