BOHUS FORTRESS ACTIVITIES AND HISTORY

Where the river Göta Älv parts, sits the mighty ruin of Bohus Fortress, which until 1658 was Norway’s southernmost defensive post. Bohuslän, named after the fortress, was ruled from here and for a long time the impregnable fortress served as a prison.

Take a look into the medieval prison dungeon or consider the well that runs 22 metres deep into the mountain after being built by prisoners under inhumane conditions over 13 years.

Bohus Fortress offers day visitors a rich variety of experiences, with daily guided tours for both children and adults during the peak season. Archery and knight activities are also included in the entry during selected times. For information on theme days, see the website for current details.

You’re welcome to try one of the floats in the pond during your visit, or why not try the throne for comfort and an impressive selfie. While you’ve got your mobile phone, make sure you download the new app from Svenskt Kulturarv (Swedish Cultural Heritage) with fun questions about Bohus Fortress. Wrap up your visit with a “fika” – that’s Swedish for coffee and something sweet – from the cafeteria, or bring your own picnic basket. CARLSTENS FORTESS A CAPTIVATING ADVENTURE

Carlsten Fortress is a well preserved and impressive site with a dramatic past. The silhouette of Carlsten Fortress is visible from a distance from all directions as one approaches the island of Marstrand by sea.

For more than 350 years, this mighty guardian has protected the small town of wooden houses below. It was the Swedish King Carl X Gustav who ordered the construction of the fortress when Marstrand became Swedish in 1658. Another 200 years was to pass before the fortress was finished.

One of its most famous prisoners was the infamous Lars Larsson Molin, better known as Lasse-Maja as he dressed as a woman during his thefts and fraud. The story goes that he was pardoned after 26 years in prison thanks to his cooking skills. In addition to visiting Lasse-Maja’s prison cell, visitors can experience life at the fortress hund-

reds of years ago through the well-preserved knight halls, heavy gates, chains, shackles and historic uniforms.

Today, the fortress is a uniquely captivating experience. In the middle of its courtyard, Soldathotellet (Soldiers Hotel) offers different and exciting accommodation. The fortress also offers concerts, marching soldiers and delicious waffles at Våffelcaféet by the entry. The popular Fästningsspelsdagarna (Fortress Games days) are held 29–30 July. Guided tours are also available to really make history come alive within the walls!

The exhibition is held inside and outside the building.

Strandverket’s knowledgeable and engaging hosts offer guided introductions to the exhibition at 11.30am and 2.30pm every day that the museum is open. Program activities will be presented at www.strandverket.se.

Strandverket also has a small bistro, offering coffee, light meals and baked goods, and a shop with exhibition catalogues, posters, art books and a selection of design objects from small-scale series.

CONTEMPORARY ART WITHIN ANCIENT WALLS

Strandverket Art Museum is housed within an old stone fortification built in the mid1800s to protect the island inhabitants against the Danes. Today, the building is open to all visitors.

It offers the possibility for meetings within the breadth and depth of the arts, between the immortalised and ephemeral, different genres and, above all, between visitors to Strandverket. There is also a sculpture park in the courtyard inside the walls.

The major exhibition of the season, Mystrium, is diverse, quirky and different. It showcases a selection of Nordic self-taught artists beyond the established art sphere.

The common denominator is a waywardness and passion for discovery. The selection of materials can be surprising – such as old tractor parts, copper-clad cement, medicine

Pilane has become and international success and is named one of Europe’s 10 best sculpture parks by British newspaper The Guardian.

One of the largest and most beautiful works of art In the world, 14-metre tall sculpture ANNA by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, sits high atop a hill. The artwork has given Bohuslän a new landmark that can be seen from Marstrand in the south to Skaftö in the north.

Pilane is nature’s own art gallery, offering a mix Of experiences that suit visitors of all ages. Here, You will have panoramic views of the Bohuslän archipelago and surrounding cultural landscape with exciting works by international artists.

NORDIC WATERCOLOUR MUSEUM Sitting on the edge of the sea and surrounding cliff landscape, the Nordic Watercolour is a meeting place where people are inspired through art, painting workshops, food, culture and learning. Here, there is something for each sense to discover. Just outside the museum doors, lies a protected sandy beach with diving towers and jetties for crab-fishing, while art awaits nearby.

This summer, the museum is showing a jubilee exhibition of works by Arne Isacsson (19172010). A great water colourist deeply inspired by nature and Bohuslän’s landscape in particular, he studied how the light travelled through the seasons, how colours and shades changes across the rocks and the ocean. Arne Isacsson worked mainly in classic watercolours, but continually explored and experimented with the possibilities of watercolour.His educational achievements left an impression and his knowledge lives on through books, methods and artists who manage his legacy. In 1944, he founded art school Gerlesborgsskolan, and was also one of the people behind the initiative to create a Nordic centre for watercolour painting, which was to become the Nordic Watercolour Museum. During summer, watercolour painting is celebrated by various perspectives through courses and workshops based in pigment, water and paper.

ORUST Sweden’s fourth largest island, Orust, is home to genuine fishing villages from the herring periods, a creative cuisine with a taste of lamb, mussels and other local produce, and intimate performances by well-known musicians. Take a stroll through historical landscapes to discover ancient castles, pilgrim trails and the world’s oldest chewing gum.

WALK THROUGH HISTORY

Orust’s fertile soil and proximity to the ocean made the island a favourable settlement location as early as in the 11th century. An abundance of ancient remains and monuments include Viking hill forts, dolmens and the world’s oldest chewing gum. Walking trails guide you through history.

Hike the Pilgrimsleden, an 80-kilometre hike that links eight churches, or any of the other five cultural trails.

THE SEA GAVE AND TOOK

Along the coast, fishing villages popped up as the great herring periods arrived. Windswept houses that protected each other were built close together near to the harbour in a time when fishing provided food and income, but also took lives, creating a close-knit community dependent on one another.

The characteristic building style is well preserved on the car-free islands Käringön and Gullholmen, and in Mollösund and Hälleviksstrand. These communities are virtually asleep in winter, but charming and breath-takingly beautiful all year round.

You find them at the end of remote, winding country roads, most easily reached by sea – the small music venues with a great reputation in musical circles. Defying their peripheral locations, they attract well-known artists as well as upcoming stars. Visit Slussens Pensionat and Nösunds Havshotell for an intimate music experience with dedicated artists who often return year after year.

FLOWER POWER

Not far from Ellös, Orust Blommor is home to the unique Geranium Museum (Pelargonmuseet), with garden, seeds, plants, a café and lunch restaurant. Only a stone’s throw away, 700-year-old private mansion Morlanda Säteri, hosts guided garden tours on Sundays throughout summer.

Guests will hear about the stories sprung from roses, ancient trees, perennials and ponds.

LOCAL AND ECOLOGICAL PRODUCE

Orust is home to an active movement focused on locally produced food, which also wants what’s best for the animals. Dedicated growers, food artisans and creators operate across Orust and many have farm shops open to the public. A visit to Tavlebords Lanthandel in Tegneby is also recommended as it operates as a market for all locally produced Orust food.

TJÖRN People were attracted to Tjörn’s wild but protecting landscape, maritime treasures and fertile soil as early as 8000 years ago. Today, the island is a modern society and vibrant community all year round, with activities for young and old as well as a rich art and culture scene.

PEDAL POWER AND FREEDOM

Cycling through the countryside means a breeze on your face, pedal power, freedom and being close to nature. You can easily ride from Rönnäng in the south to Myggenäs in the north along a network of cycling trails and paths. One trail connects the island’s two large artistic attractions Pilane Sculpture Park and the Nordic Watercolour Museum, running along pine forests, oak groves, meadows and the water’s edge.

CLIMB HIGH

Steep cliffs and wild waters, tranquil beaches and open seas characterise Tjörn. It is a landscape of contrasts, taking in meadows, farm fields and grazing paddocks in one of the region’s most popular horse locations. Climb up steep stairs, along crevices and fortresses from the Second World War to enjoy the extraordinary view from Tjörnehuvud. At the top, you will be rewarded with a view of Marstrand, Åstol, Dyrön, Tjörnekalv and Klädesholmen.

FREE SEASIDE FUN

Salt water swimming is one of summer’s most popular cost-free activities. Watching children build sandcastles, practise swimming strokes in shallow bays or fish for crabs is another highlight. Tjörn has fifteen public swimming spots along the entire coastline, including Gråskärsbadet in Skärhamn, right next to the Nordic Watercolour Museum.

A ferry takes visitors across to Åstol and its salt water pool, complete with a slide overlooking the Marstrand fjord.

VIBRANT ALL YEAR

Skärhamn, Tjörn’s central township, is shaped by its fishing and shipping history. The protected harbour that once held large fishing armadas is today a guest harbour popular with recreational sailors. It offers art, restaurants, shopping and a library. A walking path runs along the water and jetties from the south harbour to the Sagabiografen cinema. Stop for a coffee along the way or make a detour to Hamneberget with its alleys and maze of white wooden houses.

HERRING HEADQUARTERS

Klädesholmen is a island fishing community that has flourished with each great herring periods since the 16th century. Herring barrels have rolled along the island for centuries and today, the herring tradition is preserved by restaurant Salt & Sill, which famously offers more than 40 types of herring at the ” julbord” Christmas smörgåsbord. The island was connected to the mainland in 1983 and today visitors can explore the herring museum ”Sillebua” (Herring Shed) and celebrate Herring Day with a new herring flavour on Sweden’s national day on 6 June.

STENUNGSUND Stenungsund was transformed from idyllic seaside resort and agricultural centre when the petrochemical industry arrived in the 1960s. Today, it is a modern city offering shopping and culture close to the ocean and nature reserve Svartedalen.

CELEBRATE THE JOY OF DISCOVERY

Slime running through your fingers, science-based quests, chemical processes and experiments that keep visitors’ curiosity alive – Molekylverkstan is an endless source of knowledge and playful discoveries. Best of all, it is open all year and admission is free. It is located in Kulturhuset Fregatten, alongside a cinema, library, art gallery and café.

SEASIDE RESORT THEN AND NOW

Across the strait from Stenungsund’s city centre lies Stenungsön, a lush island that during the 19th century developed into a seaside resort. In the 1920s, it was home to about 50 residential houses, a bath house, society house and seaside restaurant.

Inspired by the light and nature, several of the famous ”Gothenburg colourists” lived on the island periodically. Take a walk around the island or go for a swim at ”Hawaii” – the popular swimming spot established by the ferry camp established after the collapse of the Tjörn Bridge in 1980.

CAR FREE JEWEL OF HAKEFJORDEN

Lilla Brattön island by the Hakefjorden fjord is a summer paradise where the ocean is always nearby and jetties, jumping tower, large play areas, meadows, soccer pitch and playground offer plenty to do. The island is owned by members of a Swedish union chapter, but anyone can stay in one of its 79 cabins. During summer, Lilla Brattön’s island paradise is only half an hour away by boat, as M/S Granita runs between Stenungsund and Lilla Brattön every day.

EXPERIENCE THE WILDERNESS

Svartedalen nature reserve is home to real wilderness, with large forests, rich fauna, rippling streams, glistening forest ponds and moss-covered paths. Here, you are embraced by the calm and quiet of the forest. A good starting point is Bottenstugan by Ålevatten, which is passed by many of the walking trails. Just pack your backpack and head out to experience West Sweden’s largest continuous coniferous forest.

THE PAST IS CLOSE BY

Along Stenunge å river, not far from the city centre, a set-back neighbourhood is part of a cultural environment preserved and tenderly restored to offer visitors the chance to take step back in time.

Falu red Mariagården homestead, built at the end of the 18th century and classified as a historic building, is surrounded by a lush vegetable garden, restored orangery and barn.

KUNGÄLV Best known for the impressive Bohus Fortress, which has withstood wars and kings since 1308, and a city centre with a lingering smell of chocolate from its famous biscuit factory, Kungälv is a garden city where history still has a visible presence alongside modern urban life.

SCENIC ACTIVITIES

The Tofta peninsula between Marstrand and Kungälv is an unexpected but pleasant surprise.

An impressive avenue leads to Tofta Mansion, dating back to the 16th century. The mansion is a popular ” julbord” (Christmas smörgåsbord) destination, and its surrounding buildings, barns and stables offer spas, Icelandic horse riding, golf course, Christmas market and summer theatre.

Choose between tranquillity, activities or outdoor experiences – all in one magic place surrounded by the sparkling ocean.

The nature reserve Svartedalen extends between the municipalities of Stenungsund, Lilla Edet and Kungälv, offering forest treasures, swimming spots, fishing, mushroom and berry picking. Untamed nature thrives between walking paths between two and six kilometres in length, which can be combined for a longer hike. Discover the environment around Korsvatten and Timmervatten.

Next to Hungersvatten, you will find Stenstugan, a typical cottage from the 19th century.

MIDDLE AGE HERITAGE

West of Kungälv, along Nordre Älv, rich nature and cultural environments offer vast opportunities to explore former agricultural areas and historical borderlands. The old Kongahälla, the predecessor to Kungälv, once lied here. Poetically named Klosterkullen, Kastellegården, Munkholmen, Ormoskärmarna and Ragnhildsholmen are testament to the legacy of the Middle Ages.

FRAGRANT FACTORY

Known by locals simply as the ”Biscuit Factory”, Göteborgs Kex fills Kungälv’s city centre with seductive aromas of chocolate and vanilla. For more than 100 years, Swedes have nibbled on cookies and biscuits from the factory, which opened

by Nordre Älv in central Kungälv in 1888 and remains in the same place today. Factory outlet Bräckboden is open Mondays-Saturdays, selling popular biscuits such as Guld Marie, Singoalla, Brago and Baddare.

KUNGÄLV, THE GARDEN CITY

Swedes, Norwegians and Danes have attacked Bohus Fortress fourteen times since 1308 but have never been able to conquer it. Today, it is a historic landmark looking over Kungälv. Walk from the fortress, along the cobblestone street Västra gatan, lined with traditional wooden buildings. Kungälv is known as a Garden City – don’t miss the garden Bergfeltdska trädgården and the path Kärleksstigen.

Gert Wingårdh is one of Sweden’s most well-known architects. Daniel Svensson is Managing Director of Havshotellet. Now, the Wingårdhs are contributing to the hotel’s expansion and aesthetics. The project’s common ground is an intensive love of Bohuslän.

When Havshotellet started to outgrow its original building and needed new spaces for accommodation, activities and recreation, it was natural to engage the Wingårdhs to design a concept – and that’s how it began.

Some time in 2018, a completed hotel expansion will offer 50 new rooms, additional meeting and conference rooms and a brand new sports club. The culinary concept will also be developed to surprise visitors. Daniel Svensson speaks of a unique all-round experience.

Gert Wingårdh is one of Sweden’s most respected and prized architects, who despite his success hasn’t slowed down, but rather the opposite. Gert is still curious. He continually seeks new challenges, and stubbornly continues to create, debate, discuss and deliver landmark buildings in Sweden and abroad.

The fourth season of SVT 1 TV show ”Husdrömmar” (House Dreams) has made him known to the masses.

“I guess I’m some sort of ”B celebrity” he says with his trademark laugh. The hailed architect, professor and honorary doctor is affable and convivial.

Gert is also a crofter on Marstrand. His love for the island long-standing and never fades. the ”pimped-up” 17th century croft is Gert and wife Karin’s home – the house in Gothenburg is ”only” for staying the night. They bought the croft in 1992 and today it displays – apart from a unique relaxed and cosy atmosphere –spectacular qualities not normally associated with the term ”croft”. The 17th century living quarters have been complemented by large glass areas offering uninterrupted views of the open ocean, making it an extension of nature itself. A paradise of silence, thoughts and contemplation with beautifully raw and clean surfaces, exciting floorplan and sophisticated details. Here, Gert and Karin recover after intensive working weeks. On weekends, Gert does all the cooking, walks, reads a lot and drinks quite a lot of tea. He always starts the day with a temperate morning bath with his wife in the enormous marble bath. The historic café is situated 200 metres on your right when you step off the ferry. Swedish Nobel Prize winning author Selma Lagerlöf herself is known to have sat in its garden to write Herr Arnes Penningar (The Treasure).

Experience Marstrand’s history on foot. A walk through the town will take you through narrow alleys and beautiful buildings such as Villa Aruga, Societetshuset and Rådhuset. Grab a city walk brochure from the Tourist Information Office opposite the ferry on the island.

On top of the island sits Carlsten Fortress with its living presence from days gone by. Visiting its prison dungeons will make you understand why a fifth of prisoners did not survive winter. Recipe for successful CRAB-FISHING:

Most people love crab-fishing. It simple, and you almost always catch something.

All you need is some string, a peg and a bucket.

1. Find a suitable crab-fishing spot – the water’s edge or jetty works well.

2. Tie the peg to the piece of string and find a blue mussel or sea snail.

Crush the mussel or sea snail and peg it.

3. Fill the bucket with sea water, throw your peg and bait in and wait.

4. Don’t forget to release the crabs where you caught them when you are finished!

TIME STANDS STILL AT THE MUSEUM

All of Sundsby Manor breathes culture and history. There was a farm here as early as 1388, but perhaps the most gripping story is that of Margareta Huitfeldt’s life. She lived at the manor with her whole family during the 17th century, but lived alone after she lost her children and husband. Her fate still touches us today. In one of the manor wings, you can explore the intriguing story of Margareta Huitfeldt’s life in 17th century Sweden. Both children and adults benefit from the gripping story.

WALKING TRAILS AND TREES TO CLIMB

Do you like short or long walks? Sundsby offers several trails to choose from. The children’s favourite is probably 1.7-kilometre Ivers skogspromenad (Iver’s forest walk) with its exciting climbing trees. Make sure you make a detour up to Solklinten outlook to admire the breath-taking view across Stigfjorden’s nature reserve or the caves formed by falling rocks. If you need a stop to refuel, there are rest and barbecue areas along several of the trails.

The waters outside Rönnäng on Tjörn are perfect for kayaking. We recommend paddling east from Kajaktiv and Bleket. Choose between the inner route via Kalvsund past Rönnäng and the outer route via the island Väggen and on towards Åstol whose protected harbour is perfect for a break before continuing along Hakefjorden inner archipelago. Paddle on to the protected island Kärrsön with narrow straits and valleys. If you feel like camping, we recommend the island Katten, an amazing island with beaches and a perfect spot to pitch your tent on the north-eastern side.

MATTIAS FROM ORUST KAJAK:

Orust Kajak enjoys a protected location by Stocken’s Camping. It is always possible to kayak here as there are protected waters in all directions. In just half an hour, you can reach Café Wintervallen, where there is even a beach to land the kayaks at. If you continue, you will reach charming Gullholmen in another half hour. Paddling south gets you to Käringön in 1,5 hours.

Visiting Härmanö Huvud is a must! You get to the nature reserve in about one hour from Orust Kajak.

Camping is not allowed, but you can enjoy paddling among hundreds tiny islands and skerries. There are lagoons, narrow water furrows, and a sandy beach with a view of the open horizon. If you want to stay longer, there are lovely spots for your tent on neighbouring Vallerö!

Gliding along still waters on a SUP is a magical feeling.

Standing up gives you a different perspective of the deep ocean below. One really gets a three-dimensional experience of the life and colour of the sea. In the historic Kungälv area of fortresses, excavations and cobblestone streets, the bike trails run through a modern townscape, vast natural terrain and grand archipelago.

The island of Koön is home to three wonderful hiking trails magnificently located in the west looking out towards the islands Dyrön and Åstol, and the lighthouse Pater Noster. All trails have barbecue areas, rest areas, scenic outlooks, good signage and last but not least exciting and interesting sights in the old cannon defences.

South Bohuslän offers amazing opportunities for recreational fishing. It is famous for its coastal sea trout fishing and during summer its fjords fill up with large shoals of mackerel that can be caught from boat or land. At sea, deep sea fishing offers everything from cod and saithe to the common ling and other interesting deep sea species. South Bohuslän is also home to several lakes with recreational fishing for pike, perch and walleye.

The fjord landscape of South Bohuslän offers an incredibly beautiful and varied fishing environment ranging from rushing tidal currents to shallow sandy bays and stone slabs smoothened over time by ferocious waves.

April 1 marks the sea trout fishing premiere, which for many signals the start of the fishing season. Trout fishing in shallow waters with sporadic vegetation is an extraordinary experience. If you’re lucky, your visit will coincide with the swarming of bristle worms, which means abundant food for the silvery trout who will quickly grow fat and strong after the cold winter.

When summer begins and the water warms up in June, trout is found in the currents surrounding steep cliffs and headlands.

The mackerel is also starting to arrive, chasing smaller fish along the rocky cliffs and jetties. Those without a boat can hire one or join

a fishing boat tour to try their luck. It is also possible to successfully fish for mackerel from land using both spinning rod and fly rod.

SEASONAL FISHING

Staff at Björns Fiske & Jakt in Stenungsund can help visitors with information about what type of fishing is in season and what you need for fishing success. They can also give advice on the best fishing spots and what permits are required for freshwater fishing. No permits are needed for sea fishing but there are seasonal restrictions in relation to some species.

Between the mainland and Tjörn there are many unique islands that can be reached all year round thanks to regular ferry services transporting goods and residents between the small island communities. Annika Kristensson has lived on Dyrön for 22 years. A keen island resident, she runs a small guest house in the middle of the island and works as captain, guide and hostess with Gunnars båtturer (Gunnar’s boat tours).

The company runs the line between Rörtången-Älgön all year round, departing from the Dyrön’s south harbour.

–Västtrafik’s regular public transport cards are valid on the ferry and for just over 30 SEK one way, you can get an amazing nature experience any time of the year. Lövön’s landscape of stone fences and nature will make you feel like you’ve travelled 50 years back in time. Brattön is the Bohuslän island with the highest point above the ocean, while Älgön boasts a lovely hiking trail. So, pack your picnic basket andhead out there, urges Annika with a smile.

Outside ORUST, KÄRINGÖN is situated far out in the archipelago. Boasting mighty views of the ocean and Måseskär, its western side starkly contrasts the snug maze of wooden houses and paths around the island. The same ferry stops at GULLHOLMEN, one of the oldest fishing communities in Bohuslän, populated since the 13th century, and with many of the genuine buildings preserved. The island comes alive during summer, but it also offers all-year services such as store, church, library and cinema. M/S Strömstierna departs Tuvesvik, taking ten minutes to reach Gullholmen and 45 minutes to Käringön. Tickets can be purchased in machines at Tuvesvik, on board the ferry, via Västtrafik’s cards or the To Go app. Bring your bike for an extra 30 SEK if there is room (but note cycling is not allowed on Käringön). Ferry line 381 runs every day of the year.

During summer, there are even more connections, more frequent services and more opportunities to get to Tjörn and Orust.

– Then there are services between Rökan and Marstrand, to Dyrön, Åstol, Rönnäng, Mossholmen, Skärhamn and Käringön.

So, you don’t need your own boat for a great and memorable experience along the coast. Just step on board and enjoy the ocean landscape – whether it’s spring, summer, autumn or winter.

TJÖRN gems DYRÖN and ÅSTOL are lively neighbours with different characteristics. The larger island, Dyrön is home to a popular hiking trail, sauna, and freely grazing mouflon sheep. Meanwhile, Åstol is a barren rock island, where houses cling tightly together along the mountain. Just as windswept as Åstol’s outside faces Marstrandsfjorden, as protected is its u-shaped harbour. M/S Hakefjord departs Rönnäng’s jetty, taking about 15 minutes to Åstol and 20 minutes to Dyrön’s north harbour. Buy tickets from the machine by Rönnäng’s jetty, on board The ferry, via Västtrafik’s card charger or the To Go app. Bring your bike free of charge. Line 361 to Åstol & Dyrön (north harbour), runs every day of the year.

HÄRÖN outside Kyrkesund is only five minutes away by boat. M/S Härön, Tjörn’s smallest ferry, carries up to 12 passengers, departing from the Kyrkesund jetty. An amazing hiking trail runs through the island’s nature reserve. Buy a ticket via Västtrafik’s card chargers, the To Go app or one-way ticket on board. The car park is located approximately 10 minutes of walking from the ferry, so make sure you allow enough time. Line 362 to Härön runs every day of the year.

A short ferry ride across the strait brings you to the island of MARSTRAND, capital of sailing. Stroll along cosy blocks, Tiny alleys, trendy boutiques and lovely restaurants.

The island also offers wonderful hiking trails with magnificent views to the west. Read more about Marstrand on page 28. The ferry Lasse-Maja departs Koön’s ferry stop, taking only a couple of minutes to reach the island of Marstrand. For tickets, use Västtrafik’s card charger or the ticket machine At the Koön ferry stop. The service is free from Marstrand.

LILLA BRATTÖN outside Stenungsund is a picturesque holiday island with great swimming opportunities. The island is own by members of a section of Swedish union IF Metall, but anyone is welcome to the island and its 79 cottages. KÄRINGÖN IS MY HOME

Kenth Berndtsson was born on Käringön 68 years ago. When his parents decided to live and start work in Gothenburg, it wasn’t long before young Kenth grew tired of carrying the house key in a chain around his neck and waiting for mum and dad to come home from work. He especially missed Käringön and asked to live with his grandparents and attend the island school. Mum and dad understood and agreed.

So, Kenth grew up on his beloved island.

Ate fish and seafood both as everyday fare and for special occasions. Lobster with white sauce and potatoes, for example. And that’s how it began. To this day, his menu carries great fish and seafood dishes – perhaps with the exception of grandma’s special lobster, white sauce and potatoes. But it was tasty, he smiles.

KARINGO

Kenth grew up and started a family. Lena and he had daughter Camilla – a true entrepreneur like her father. After he nearly worked himself to death, with his ever-expanding and timeconsuming business, he decided to return to his element, the ocean. He wanted to grow mussels, but it ended up being oysters. It all started in 2000, and after a few lean years, the oyster business was developing. He has never regretted his life’s work KARINGO. 32

Where the world’s best oysters can be harvested straight from the ocean, disappear into the mouth along with delicious sips of champagne. To top it off, the champagne comes from a vineyard dedicated to producing the perfect champagne to accompany oysters.

That’s the winning concept - exclusive, small-scale, passionate and, actually, quite simple. That’s the point and it’s the only way to taste Käringön if you ask Kenth.

The place is small. The menu is simple. The produce is exclusive. The world’s best oysters, which we harvest, eat and enjoy. The oysters grown here are Ostrea Edulis. Oysters grown in Scandinavian waters grow slowly, which make them the best in the world, characterised by their fresh and salty taste. You can’t serve oysters much fresher than this. We only tale bookings these days, and I’m not really aware if any so-called celebrities are due to turn up, says Kenth. That’s actually quite irrelevant. The main thing is that our guests appreciate what We have to offer. It usually works out quite well, actually.

ON THE FUTURE....

Kenth is a vigorous man in the prime of his life, but of course he thinks about what might

happen to KARINGO if he can no longer run it. Bringing up the matter as a reality check, his daughter and son-in-law med reassured him; Of course, we’ll take care of KARINGO when you can’t run it full-time, but you can never leave the place. You must join us for as long as you can.

That felt great, smiles Kenth. Leaving my life’s work KARINGO to the next generation and being welcome to work as long as I want to, that’s all I want.
