Arch 218: Mashrabiya
Step 1 : create a circle in the center and draw additional circles(red) along the arc of the original circle
Step 2 : result six extra circles. Cut the white arcs which are outside of the hexagon.
Step 3 : the result final pattern
Step 4 : move the red arc nearest to the center of the pattern upwards and the other red arc furthest away from the first red arc downwards. Create surface with loft tool.
Step 5 : extrude the hexagon & close up the bottom areas to get a closed polysurface.
Step 6 : close up the upper areas to get the whole closed polysurface.
Narrative : The Mashrabiya is a traditional element of Arabic Architecture. It’s a type of projected window enclosed with curved wood latticework, which usually is located on the second storey of a house. Since it gives us a good shade, privacy and sunlight, it’s often used in different places of Middle East. The materials such as wood, stone, metal and concrete were used to construct this type of window.

Strength : After this assignment, we’re confident enough using different commands, such as networksrf, extrude curve, planarsrf, loft, sweep 1,2, and cap to create a curved surface. The level of rendering is getting better and better.
Vertical Section
Weakness : Since most of the parts of my structure are too sharp that it’d be scary and dangerous to others.

tunity : I would try designing a smooth curved instead of a sharp one.
Still, there’d be some difficulties in creating a ce a curved one.

Inspiration
University of Phoenix Stadium The most interesting thing for this stadium is the retractable roof. It opens when there is a match and closes when there is not.

Iteration 1 & 2 Iteration 1 My site strategy is experience of air & ground inside & outside the building. The two programs, gondola and hot air balloon, can share knowledge between kite workshop, such as cutting technique, fastening, dyeing, drying and sewing skills. They could bring people to experience different feelings. On the ground, people are surrounded by very noises in the city, but while people are riding the gondola or hot air balloon, everything around them will be definitely quiet.
Normally, the size of a sport type hot air balloon is around 45’ wide, and 70’ high. The workshop for balloon is located on the third floor (120 ft), which is given 50 extra feet for the balloon to adjust the position before it takes off. The overall material is chipboard without any consideration of what exactly materials are going to be used for the building.
Iteration 2(right) In second iteration, we were jumping scale from 1/16”=1’ to ⅛”= 1’. I did not get to build the third floor, for I chose the soft plastic sheet which in large piece and it can’t stand firmly on the ground.

Final Iteration
After people buy tickets from retail store, people can use either one of 5 elevators to go to the top of the roof and they have 2 choices, either gondola or hot air balloon, to ride and go from site location to the windmill. On the return way, they also have two choices too to go back to the site location. There would be two times experience in the air.
I designed 4 terraces on the third floor, for when people are inside, they have a chance to see the actual hot air balloon, while outside, they can see the testers who are flying kites on the terraces. For the roof in wood, the system is like a retractable roof. It opens when the hot air balloon takes off and closes when there is no balloon takes off.
