WEEK 1&2: MULTIVIEW DRAWING

The first thing we had to do is find the favourite building and this is located in Daly City near my house. Since it is near my house, I could go around easily whenever I needed some information or views from this building. Strength By doing this project, I can really understand the shape of a house and know clearly where is the door, window, and so on, from these various multiview drawings. Weakness Even it gives us a clear image of a house, I had got a trouble while I was estimating the scale of the whole house. Opportunities May be in the future, I should emphasize on the line weights to show the actual thickness of the house. Risks --6

WEEK 3: TINY HOUSE ¼”=1’ PLAN+FULL SCALE

PLAN + SECTION

7

This is the assignment which we had to do in group. We designed our own tiny house and tapped it on ground outside our class.

Taping

Strength After tapping on the ground, we can see how tiny it is which we could not feel that way before we did it. Weakness Since we changed the size of the bathroom and kitchen larger than the first one, it is so narrow for the living room which is the middle area in the floor plan.

Opportunities May be we could adjust the size of the kitchen, living room and bathroom. Risks Since there is no partition wall for this house, we do not have privacy.

WEEK 4: SKETCHUP ARRAY TOOLS : CUBES

This is the very basic lesson for using the array tools.

WEEK 4: SKETCHUP ARRAY TOOLS : TRELLIS

11

After knowing the basic method of array tools, here is the lesson for different kind of shapes to practice by using the tools. Strength With the help of the software, it saves a lot of time in doing this kind of design.

12

Weakness Even though it saved some time, it’s a little bit hard and I did not know exactly how to use the components and grouping at that

Opportunities There is an opportunity to add more details for this structure by using the tool. Risks As a beginner of using this software, it would be so difficult and confusing for the first time.

This is the exercise how to get the repetition of a floor and it is the another practice of using the array tools.

AXON

Strength Save time. And it can also improve the creativity. Weakness ---

Opportunities We can apply these patterns in designing a house. Risks Sometimes, it could ruin the aesthetics of a house. 14

WEEK 5~8: INDIVIDUAL TINY HOUSE PROJECT

15

16

First sketch of an individual tiny house

A developed sketch 17

This big project is the individual tiny house project which can be different from the group one. Strength The most common problem that designing a tiny house is the size because it’s normally tiny. For my tiny house, I expand the space that makes the house become bigger. I also have partitions for each room so that we have privacy. Weakness The bookshelf and ladder are close together. There is some difficulty for functioning between them. ladder

Opportunities In future, we should consider the situation of emergency since there is no enough door to go outside. Risks If we add more doors, more space is required for tiny house. It sometimes does not happen because we do not have enough space.

Week 10~12 Original Tool & Improved Tool

Original Tool: Drum Tuner 22

The problem for the common tuner is that it is so small in size, which is just 1 15/16” in height. Since it is too small, it is not easy to tighten the tension rods when you are tuning above standard.

Improved Tool : Drum Tuner handle

bar

â??

â??

The first step for the improvement is making the body of the tuner become long. With the help of the bar and the handle, we can easily initiate a force even for turning a very high tune or a very low tune. But, for the improved tuner, we would need two hands to use it.

Week 13~14: Cathedral of St.Mary of the assumption(Original) 24

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

The cathedral of st. mary of the assumption is the principal church in San Francisco, California. The cathedral was designed by local architects John Michael Lee, Paul A. Ryan and Angus McSweeney, collaborating with internationally known architects Pier Luigi Nervi and Pietro Belluschi. It was built in 1971. It is 255 feet in length and width, and approximately 190 feet in height. It was considered innovative at that time because of the hyperbolic paraboloid. 1680 pre-cast triangular coffers were used for the inner cupola. Our eyes are drawn upwards as our hearts are meant to uplift towards the heavens and God. Overall, it’s a really good design at that time.

While I was rendering with sketchup, I could not easily use the loft tool to create the cupola. Here’s how I did : From the sketch above, first, I set 6 points on the line number 1 and 2. Then, I connected the points on the line 1 to the points on the line 2, creating a single line respectively. Similar way for the line 3, and line 4. After that, within the small rectangles, I could create a surface by creating a line diagonally. Continue doing the rest of them.

Week 15~16: Cathedral of st. mary of the assumption (improved version)

Sketches

cross

32

Problem: There’s only one entrance that we can go into the building. But, Since the structure is symmetry, we can’t easily know which one is actually the entrance. By changing the size of one side, which is the entrance way, to become bigger than the other three sizes, we eyes can easily recognize it.

❏ ❏

By doing that, we can also improve the aesthetic of the facade. Also, the roof plan actually becomes the cross, which reminds Christians of God’s love in sacrificing his own son for humanity.

Overall, I’ve learned a lot using the rendering to help me present during my presentation. Even I have some difficulty with communication, it has helped me a lot to say something what I want and what I’ve done.

More importantly, the more sketches I draw, the easier I would get the goal I want. Without the basic sketches, it’s really hard to render anything directly with sketchup software.

Also, before I draw something, I’ve learnt to think about the scales, the line weight carefully.

It’s also the lesson of solving problems during the class. In the future, there is no doubt that I’ve to solve everything on my own. This class has been a precious time for me to improve myself.

Thank You so much~~
