Welcome | Snapshots Design | Weekend up North Designblok | CanapĂŠ: The Room by SOFFA Interior | Second Home in Vienna

Welcome

SNAPSHOTS Our November online issue is full of impressions from the latest trends in the world of design. We begin in Stockholm, where our colleague Patrik captured the very best on offer at the Scandinavian design trade fair Formex, which this year showcased Czech jewellery at the Handmade Dreams exhibition. This October Czech brands were also prominent at the annual Prague Designblok, which celebrated food as its theme. At Designblok SOFFA created a distinctive space named CANAPÉ: THE ROOM BY SOFFA – an experiential dining and living room in one. For the first time we were able to bring together a range of mostly Czech design labels to feature furniture and accessories in a realistic setting, and our visitors experienced and savoured the atmosphere of CANAPÉ together with some excellent food! If you were unable to join us at Designblok, then do join us here and enjoy these pages. Inspiration awaits! Adéla Kudrnová | editor in chief PS: A big ‘thank you’ to Instax (www.instax.cz) for the snapshots at Designblok.

WEEKEND UP NORTH AT THE END OF SUMMER WE HEADED NORTH IN SEARCH OF THE LATEST DESIGN TRENDS. WE FOUND THEM AT FORMEX, THE LARGEST SCANDINAVIAN TRADE FAIR OF INTERIOR DESIGN AND FASHION, WHICH THIS YEAR INCLUDED AN EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY CZECH JEWELLERY TITLED HANDMADE DREAMS.

WITH AN ALMOST EIGHTY-YEAR-OLD TRADITION AND MORE THAN 900 EXHIBITORS, FORMEX IS THE LARGEST DESIGN TRADE FAIR IN NORTHERN EUROPE, VISITED TWICE YEARLY BY MORE THAN 23,000 ENTHUSIASTS, JOURNALISTS AND BUYERS. EXHIBITORS INCLUDE PROMINENT DESIGN BRANDS, DISTINGUISHED DESIGNERS AND UP-AND-COMING CREATIVES AND STUDENTS. IN STOCKHOLM, SOFFA HAD THE HONOUR OF MEETING THE SWEDISH DESIGNER KRISTINA STARK AND THE CREATIVE DUO ISADECO AND REIS PETTERSSON, AND SAW THE LATEST DESIGNS FROM THE DANISH STUDIO MOEBE.

We were thrilled by the Czech exhibition Handmade Dreams, curated by Petr Nový and organised by the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou in collaboration with the Czech Centres abroad network. Next to glass, Czech jewellery has a rich history and is among the most prized in the world. The exhibition honours the craftsmanship and the distinctive technologies used by Czech jewellers, whose stunning work is recognised by such iconic fashion labels as Nina Ricci, Gaultier and Karl Lagarfeld. The main exhibition partner is the Preciosa Group, and other represented Czech brands include AAC, G&B Bijoux, Odvárka Bijoux, Ralton and Šenýr Bijoux. The exhibition also showcases the work of jewellery students from Jablonec nad Nisou, Železný Brod and Liberec, as well as the jewellery studio ZORYA and the design studio LLEV. In addition to Stockholm, the Handmade Dreams exhibition and its associated architecture, designed by Jakub Berdych, has enchanted jewellery lovers in Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, France and Japan. Next year Petr Nový plans to take Handmade Dreams to Shanghai and Seoul. ■

THIS SPREAD: Where else to look for the latest design trends than in the epicentre of a minimalist yet cosy aesthetic? FORMEX features the latest from traditional labels in the world of interior design and decor, always remembering to recognise the work of smaller studios and independent designers, who have always played a key role in Scandinavian design. Student designers presented some very interesting and daring pieces at the trade fair. Our favourite works at FORMEX included accessories by Isadeco and Reis Pettersson, the new Floating Leaves collection from Moebe, and small ceramic pieces from the Klei ceramic studio.

THIS SPREAD: Jakub Berdych from studio Qubus created the jewellery stands for the Handmade Dreams exhibition. The stands were designed to highlight the finest details of the displayed pieces, and to allow them to travel easily with the exhibition. Each piece of jewellery represents a distinctive style and manufacturing technique. The Applied Arts School in Železný Brod celebrates the playfulness of young glassmakers, while the design duo ZORYA presents daring combinations of unusually paired materials.

SOFFA LOVES DESIGN, CZECH LABELS AND MEANINGFUL COLLABORATIONS. OUR THREE LOVES WERE THE MAIN INSPIRATION FOR CREATING CANAPÉ – THE ROOM BY SOFFA. CANAPÉ FEATURED MAINLY CZECH BRANDS IN A REALISTIC LIVING ROOM DESIGNED BY SOFFA, AND IT SERVED AS A FUNCTIONAL MEETING SPACE DURING THE DESIGNBLOK FESTIVAL. WE WILL LET YOU BE THE JUDGE OF HOW WELL WE DID AT COMBINING GOOD FOOD WITH EXCELLENT DESIGN!

The following brands were featured in our living room-cum-dining room: TON provided the seating furniture; Bomma supplied the light fixtures, drinking glasses and tableware; Deelive gallery helped to organise the space with shelving systems, tables and other accessories; Vitra lent their sofa set and rugs; Lavmi contributed wallpaper; G. Benedikt furnished the porcelain dinnerware; Rückl added drinking glasses and other glass accessories; and Artek and Křehký completed the fit-out. SECOND HOME IN VIENNA ECLECTIC YET TRADITIONAL, PEACEFUL YET CENTRAL, LUXURIOUS, BUT NOT IN THE WAY YOU MIGHT EXPECT. HOTEL ALTSTADT OPENED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, AND DURING THIS TIME IT HAS ELEVATED HOSPITALITY TO AN ELEGANT ART FORM. text: Helena Novotnรก | photo: Michaela Karรกsek ฤ ejkovรก

THE BOUTIQUE HOTEL ALTSTADT SITS IN THE VERY HEART OF VIENNA IN THE FASHIONABLE SPITTELBERG AREA, AND ALTHOUGH IT IS FOUND ON A QUIET STREET, THE BUSTLE OF THE CITY CENTRE IS WITHIN CLOSE REACH. WHILE NO TWO ROOMS IN THE HOTEL ARE ALIKE, THEY ALL HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON: EACH ROOM AND SUITE EVOKES THE FEELING OF BEING AT HOME.

Originally built as a palace in 1902, the building was designed in the traditional Viennese Ringstrasse style. In the 1950s the palace was transformed into a guest house, but its current visage of a boutique hotel is more recent. In 1991 the building caught the eye of Otto E. Wiesenthal, a successful entrepreneur who had spent a great deal of time on the road and had called many a hotel his second home. And it was the impersonal atmosphere of these hotels that in 1992 led the entrepreneur to venture out as a hotelier. Initially Hotel Altstadt had only twenty-four rooms, but with time the number of rooms has nearly doubled. Renowned and lesser-known architects and designers have imprinted their ideas of the art of hospitality on the hotel’s rooms and suits, and the result is eclectic, playful and very elegant. The walls display the works of famous artists, most of which come from the owner’s private collection, and the owner is equally passionate about collecting iconic pieces of furniture. One of the rooms houses a chair made by Ray and Charles Eames, another boasts the Barcelona chair made by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, and a third is furnished with Fritz Hansen furniture. Hotel Altstadt is not a luxury hotel in the traditional sense of the word – there are no gilded taps or velvet curtains. But at any time of the day you can find a comfortable seat in the sitting room, where you can savour tea made in an old-fashioned samovar with a piece of homemade cake and relish the quiet oasis in the middle of a big city. Book your next stay at www.altstadt.at. ■

RIGHT: The rooms and corridors are decorated with works of art from the collection of Otto E. Wiesenthal, the hotel proprietor. NEXT PAGE : The largest room features a chair made by Ray and Charles Eames and a writing desk from the 1920s.

THIS SPREAD: In addition to a comfortable bed, the hostel offers a breakfast service and light refreshments in a small bistro, which serves up excellent soups, sandwiches and desserts.
