JO U R NE Y TO T H E N O R T H text: Adéla Kudrnová
The big film issue SOFFA 15, which came out in June, dedicated many pages to Ingmar Bergman and ‘his’ island Fårö, a stunning speck of land in the Baltic Sea. Writing about the island made us feel wistful about Nordic countries, and so we decided to head north in our July mini issue. The beautiful images found in this issue will give you a taste of the Nordic summer, one of the most beautiful summers you will find anywhere in the world. ►
n
The mini issue presents more captivating images from Fårö and offers up a SOFFA-style tourist guide to Copenhagen. The Danish metropolis is sure to win over all kinds of travellers, from lovers of great design to food aficionados. And it’s only an hour’s flight from Prague! We wish you a wonderful rest of the summer, wherever it may find you. Your SOFFA team PS: Don’t forget to include headphones when packing for your summer travels, so you don’t miss the SOFFA podcast in Czech.

DANISH ME TROPO L I S I N T H E S U M M ER text: Patrik Florián | photo: Anna Wim & Patrick Florian
WELCOME TO A KINGDOM MADE UP MOSTLY OF ISLANDS. YOU CAN HOP ON A BIKE AND EXPLORE THE FLAT LANDSCAPE FROM MORNING TO NIGHT OR EXPLORE COPENHAGEN, A CITY REPLETE WITH HISTORY, MODERN ARCHITECTURE, ART AND FANTASTIC CUISINE. OR IF YOU FANCY A MOMENT OF QUIET INTROSPECTION, GRAB A FEW SMØRREBRØD (OPEN-FACED SANDWICHES), A SNEGL (CINNAMON SWIRL PASTRY) AND A CUP OF COCIO (COCOA) AND HEAD FOR THE BEACH.
Copenhagen is always on the move, yet it doesn’t feel like a busy city. While it may appear a bit cold at times, as soon as the first rays of sun emerge from behind the roofline of the city’s brick buildings, a warm atmosphere comes over the city, and its parks and outdoor cafes quickly come alive with people. And if the sun should hide after a few minutes, shrouded by dark grey clouds, you can seek refuge in one of the city’s museums or galleries, which contain some of the best historical collections as well as fine contemporary art. And once the sun reveals its warming face again, you can stroll through Copenhagen’s streets and admire how Scandinavian minimalism perfectly marries traditional architecture with very modern buildings. It’s as if they have always stood there side by side. ► LEFT: The art museum Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek was built around the personal collection of Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg brewery, and includes works of art that span antiquity, French impressionism and paintings from the Danish Golden Age.
11
LEFT: Facing the water, the modern wing of the Danish royal library, called the Black Diamond, illustrates a perfect union between modern and traditional architecture. 13
ABOVE AND RIGHT: The Botanical Garden offers an oasis of green in the middle of the city and a magnificent view of giant palms from above.
14
LEFT: Fairytale icons of Copenhagen. Nyhavn, the most famous of Copenhagen canals, is lined with colourful houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, one of which was the residence of the author Hans Christian Andersen. Inspired by Andersen’s story The Little Mermaid, the sculptor Edvard Erikson created a bronze statue of the little mermaid, which rests on a rock at the Langelinie promenade. 17
ABOVE: Torvehallerne is a former exhibition hall that has been transformed into a food market with more than 60 stalls offering the best of authentic Swedish cuisine. RIGHT: Leave the gates of Copenhagen and the EU for a moment and visit the autonomous neighbourhood of Christiania, where the grass is greener and everything seems merrier. 18
LEFT: The Marble Church, known in Danish as Frederiks kirke, was built in Rococo style. 21
OVER THE BRIDGE TO SWEDEN AND FURTHER NORTH IN SEARCH OF ART If you can spare an extra day during your visit to Copenhagen, take a trip to Sweden to admire beautiful architecture, enjoy designer coffee houses and savour the famous Swedish meatballs. A mere eight kilometres away, over the longest European bridge Öresundsbron, lies Malmö, the cultural and economic centre of southern Sweden.
And if you are a true SOFFA traveller and can never get enough of exploring, head north of Copenhagen to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark’s centre of contemporary art. Apparently one of the 1,000 places every person should visit in their lifetime, gallery Louisiana is also one of the most visited art galleries in the world. ■

EVEN THOUGH OUR WORK BRINGS MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCOVERING NEW PLACES, FEW HAVE LEFT SUCH A STRONG IMPRINT ON US AS THE SWEDISH ISLAND FÅRÖ. PERHAPS IT’S BECAUSE ON BERGMAN’S ISLAND WE EXPERIENCED AN ATMOSPHERE OF COMPLETE SERENITY. TO CONJURE UP THIS FEELING, WE DECIDED TO BRING YOU A SMALL GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHS THAT DIDN’T MAKE IT INTO THE BIG ISSUE SOFFA 15. LET YOURSELF BE SOOTHED BY THE PERFECT STILLNESS OF FÅRÖ.

Š KO DA U NL E AS H ES A M I G H T Y B EA R text: Václav Pavlečka | photo: Škoda
SPORTING LINES SHARPER THAN THE TEETH OF AN ALASKAN BEAR, ŠKODA’S ALL NEW VISIONS CONCEPT CAR DEFINES A BRAVE NEW WORLD OF BIG SUVS. CUBISM INFUSED WITH EXCITING COLLIDING ANGLES, THE VISIONS IS FEARLESS AGAINST ANY TYPE OF ROAD; IN FACT, ITS MIGHTY MUSCLES ARE FIT TO DEAL WITH NO ROAD AT ALL. ŠKODA’S EXCITING GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE OF HYBRID SUVS REVEALS A STRIKINGLY GREEN, HYPNOTISING VISION WHICH APPEARS TO BE FROM A FUTURE FAR AWAY. IN REALITY THE VISIONS IS NO WORK OF FICTION, AS IT LOOKS VERY CLOSE TO THE ANTICIPATED PRODUCTION VERSION APTLY NAMED KODIAQ.
ŠKODA’s chief designer Jozef Kaban continues his mission to bring traditional symbols of Czech craftsmanship to the popular carmaker’s range. Not only is his work inspired by Czech Cubism - nowhere else will you find Cubist architecture on as magnificent a scale as in the Czech Republic - Jozef and his team also bring famous Bohemian crystal into the game. Like the crystal inspired headlights of the ŠKODA Superb, the whole front of the VisionS is dedicated to this wonderful element. But it’s not just the sharp design and bearish attitude that make the VisionS steal your heart. Its 4.7 metre long and 1.9 metre wide body can carry up to seven passengers in comfort and still provide a very dynamic ride while consuming a mere 1.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. The 1.4 TSI turbocharged engine, coupled with two electric motors and the automatic DSG gearbox, produces an impressive system output of 165 kW that can catapult all seven passengers from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.4 seconds. For city driving the hybrid drivetrain allows the engine to be shut off completely, leaving just the electric motors to get you around town for up to 50 kilometres on pure electricity. What a trip! ■
