INTELLIGENCE DERIVES THE URGE TO TEST LIMITS TO PROPEL A SOCIETY FORWARD; THOUGH, THIS TRIAL AND ERROR YIELDS TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF STRESS ON FINITE RESOURCES. ULTIMATELY, THIS INTELLIGENCE MAY BE HUMANITY’S FATAL FLAW THAT JEOPARDIZES THE SURVIVAL OF EARTH. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN EARTH CAN NO LONGER SUSTAIN US? OUR CLEVERNESS, OUR INVENTIVENESS AND OUR ACTIVITIES ARE NOW THE DRIVERS OF EVERY GLOBAL PROBLEM WE NOW FACE. WE HAVE GENERATED THE SMARTEST TECHNOLOGY YET IT RETURNS NO LONG-TERM BENEFITS. IT’S TIME WE OUTSMART OUR INTELLIGENCE, RECONFIGURE TECHNOLOGY, AND MEND THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT MANKIND HAS LEFT ON EARTH. THIS THESIS EXPLORES AND EXPOSES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE IN DESIGNING FOR HUMAN SURVIVAL. THE FOOTPRINT THAT HUMANS HAVE LEFT ON EARTH IS NO LONGER REVERSIBLE. ALTHOUGH THE ISSUE HAS REACHED SIGNIFICANT GLOBAL AWARENESS OVER THE PAST DECADE, AWARENESS IS NOT ENOUGH FOR WHAT IS TO COME AHEAD. THIS PROJECT STRIVES TO UTILIZE NEW TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE AN ATTRACTIVE, INNOVATIVE, PROGRESSIVE AND ROBUST SCENARIO BASED PLATFORM TO RECONFIGURE CITY SYSTEMS, FOR OTHER CITIES TO FOLLOW IN ORDER TO SUSTAIN LIFE ON EARTH. THIS SCENARIO-BASED PLATFORM WILL CONTAIN THE CITY OF PARIS MAKING IT RESPONSIVE TO ITS ENVIRONMENT YET OPERATIONAL WHEN OUR EARTH CAN NO LONG BE PRODUCTIVE. RECONFIGURING A MORE SUSTAINABLE CITY OF PARIS WILL REQUIRE ASSIGNING ROLES TO EVERY ASPECT OF THE NEWLY DESIGNED LANDSCAPE, WHICH INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO BUILDINGS WITH POSITIVE ENERGY, GREEN ROOFS, GREEN STREETS, AND ECOLOGICAL HUBS. INTELLIGENCE HAS BROUGHT US THIS FAR, IT’S TIME WE CHANNEL THIS INTELLIGENCE INTO A LONG-TERM SOLUTION TO REMEDIATE THE DAMAGE WE AS HUMANS HAVE CREATED. RECONFIGURING TECHNOLOGY WILL ALLOW US THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE AN IMMERSIVE CONTAINED ENVIRONMENT THAT SHAPES A NEW STANDARD OF LIVING IN ORDER TO SUSTAIN HUMAN LIFE, LEAVING US WITH THE ULTIMATE DECISION TO ADAPT OR DIE. ARE YOU READY TO EVOLVE?

PARIS IS THE CAPITAL AND MOST POPULOUS CITY OF FRANCE. SINCE, THE 17TH CENTURY, PARIS HAS BEEN ONE OF EUROPE’S MAJOR CENTERS FOR FIANCÉ, COMMERCE, FASHION, SCIENCE, AND THE ARTS. AS A LEADER OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, FRANCE IS TRYING TO CHANGE RESOURCE USAGE AND PRODUCTION HABITS TO ULTIMATELY REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS. THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT IS CARRYING OUT MANY NATIONAL AND TERRITORIAL ACTION PLANS IN AN EFFORT TO REDUCE EMISSIONS OF POLLUTION INTO WATER. ADDITIONALLY, FRENCH WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS ARE BEING IMPROVED THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF VARIOUS INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAMS. IN RECENT YEARS, THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT HAS AGGRESSIVELY PURSUED THE EMBRACE OF CLEAN TECHNOLOGY THROUGH THE USE OF GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES. AS PARIS PROVES TO BE THE MOST PROGRESSIVE CITY ON EARTH, IT WILL CONTINUE TO LEAD THE WORLD, AS IT BECOMES THE PLATFORM FOR FUTURE CITIES TO FOLLOW. THE SPECIFIC LOCATION IS KNOWN AS PALAIS-BOURBON, OR THE 7TH ARRONDISSENMENT ENTERTAINS TOURISTS AS IT IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MAJOR AND WELL-KNOWN ATTRACTIONS OF PARIS. THIS CENTRAL ARRONDISSENMENT IS SITUATED ON THE LEFT BANK OF THE RIVER SEINE. IT IS ALSO HOME TO THE CHAMP DE MARS, A 60-ACRE PUBLIC GREEN SPACE. THE LOCATION HAS GREAT OPPORTUNITY AS IT COMBINES CITY ELEMENTS, GREEN SPACE, AND RUNNING WATER.

nEeds || IT’S THE FINAL CALL TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM CLIMATE CATASTROPHE. THE YEAR OF 2018 HAD THE MOST EXTENSIVE WARNING YET ON THE RISK OF RISING GLOBAL TEMPERATURES. IN FACT, THE WORLD IS NOW NEARLY ONE DEGREE WARMER THAN IT WAS BEFORE WIDESPREAD INDUSTRIALIZATION. ONE DEGREE MAY NOT SOUND LIKE MUCH, BUT WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF GLOBAL TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO RISE? REPORTS SHOW IF THE WORLDS TEMPERATURE RISES BY TWO DEGREES, MOUNTAIN GLACIERS AND RIVERS WILL START TO DISAPPEAR AND MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS WILL SEE MORE LANDSLIDES, AS THE PERMAFROST THAT HELD THEM TOGETHER MELTS AWAY. BY 2100, SEA LEVELS COULD RISE BY A METER, DISPLACING 10% OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION. PEOPLE ARE PROJECTED TO FACE DEATH AS THEY STRUGGLE WITH THE INCREASING HEAT. THE ECOSYSTEM WILL COLLAPSE AND A THIRD OF ALL LIFE ON EARTH WILL FACE EXTINCTION. PLANT GROWTH PATTERNS WILL SHIFT, SLOW, AND EVENTUALLY STOP. THE WORLD’S FOOD SUPPLIES WILL DECREASE, AND WITHIN 85 YEARS, ONE THIRD OF THE PLANET WILL BE WITHOUT FRESH WATER. SO WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF TO OUR CLIMATE IF WE WERE TO STOP EMITTING THE CARBONS THAT ARE CAUSING ALL THIS DAMAGE? A SIMPLE ANSWER IS, WE ARE STILL DOOMED. THE RELEASED CARBON DIOXIDE WILL REMAIN IN THE ATMOSPHERE FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, IN A TIME SPAN MORE RELEVANT TO HUMANS, ONCE RELEASED THE CARBON DIOXIDE IS IN OUR ENVIRONMENT ESSENTIALLY FOREVER. OUR NEXT STEPS ARE VITAL TO SURVIVAL. ADDRESSING THE DAMAGE DONE TO OUR PLANET WILL REQUIRE AN ALTERATION OF LIVING STANDARDS.
issues || PLANET EARTH HAS BEEN HOME TO US FOR THE LAST 200,000 YEARS. WHILE WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED MUCH IN THAT SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, WE HAVE ALSO CREATED DAMAGE. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? AS CREATURES OF HABIT, LETTING GO OF LIFE, AS WE KNOW IT WILL NOT COME EASY. RECONFIGURING A CITY SO ENRICHED WITH CULTURE AND HISTORY IS A CHALLENGE AND EFFORT THAT WILL REQUIRE A SHIFT IN THINKING. RECLAIMING TOURISM AND LETTING GO OF THE HISTORY IN WHICH MAKES UP THE CITY PARIS IS IN ORDER FOR SURVIVAL.
A NEWLY RECONFIGURED CITY OF PARIS RESIDING A TRANSPARENT, DEMOCRATIC FORM OF URBANISM, TO ALLOW LIFE ON EARTH TO CONTINUE TO GROW IN A FAIR AND SUSTAINABLE WAY.
mission statement
AT A TIME WHEN CITIES ARE UNDER PRESSURE FROM GROWING POPULATIONS, GLOBAL WARMING AND WORSENING INEQUALITY, WE ARE REQUIRED ADAPT TO A NEW STANDARD OF LIVING. IN THE FACE OF THESE CHALLENGES, PARIS IS LEADING THE WAY TOWARD A MORE TRANSPARENT, DEMOCRATIC FORM OF URBANISM, TO ALLOW LIFE ON EARTH TO CONTINUE TO GROW IN A FAIR AND SUSTAINABLE WAY. THE NEW GENERATION OF LANDSCAPE URBANISM WILL RECONFIGURE WHAT OUR TECHNOLOGY AND INTELLIGENCE HAS DESTROYED. THIS SCENARIO-BASED PLATFORM WILL UTILIZE THE EVIDENCE-BASED ACTIONS THAT WILL ACHIEVE EMISSION NEUTRAL AND RESILIENT CITIES, AND A HEALTHIER, MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. THIS CONTAINED ENVIRONMENT WILL ALLOW HUMAN LIFE TO PERSIST HERE ON EARTH EVEN UNDER THE HARSHEST CONDITIONS.

goAls TO ESTABLISH A SUSTAINABLE CITY PLATFORM FOR FUTURE CITIES TO FOLLOW.
TO MIMIC EARTH’S ECOSYSTEMS, IN AN ENCLOSED ENVIRONMENT, THAT IS CABLE OF SUSTAINING HUMAN LIFE, FLORA AND FUANA.
TO ENCOURAGE THE CITY’S INHABITANTS TO ADOPT ECO-FRIENDLY STANDARDS OF LIVING IN THEIR DAILY LIVES.
TO DESIGN A SMART AND HEALTHY FUTURE FOR PARIS WHILE DECREASING THE CITIES ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS.
WHEN SELECTING A CITY TO BE USED AS AN EXAMPLE PLATFORM FOR OTHER CITIES TO FOLLOW, THERE IS MUCH TO CONSIDER. THE CITY MUST HAVE WELL RESPECTED STANDARDS OF LIVING AND PRACTICES TO MAKE IT DESIRABLE YET FEASIBLE. THIS PROJECT REQUIRES INHABITANTS, MEANING IN PROXIMITY OF HOUSING. AS WELL AS SPACE FOR GROWTH, MEANING OPEN SPACE AND THE ABILITY FOR VERTICAL GROWTH IF NECESSARY. ADDITIONALLY, IT REQUIRES A CITY WITH AN INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE MINDSET. IN ORDER TO BECOME KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE CITY, IT’S PROCEDURES, AND TO ASSURE IT IS THE CORRECT CITY TO TEST-DRIVE THE PLATFORM MUCH RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED ON THE CONTEXT OF PARIS. DEMOGRAPHICS PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE SUCCESS RATE FOR THE EXAMPLE PLATFORM THAT IS THIS PROJECT. INHABITANTS IN PROXIMITY TO THE RECONFIGURATION MUST BE WILLING TO ADAPT ECO-FRIENDLY STANDARDS OF LIVING AS WELL AS SACRIFICING WHAT IS FAMILIAR TO THEM. STUDYING THE SDRIF 2030 WAS NECESSARY TO REVIEW THE CITY’S STANDARDS TO DETERMINE IF IT FOLLOWS SUSTAINABLE PRINCIPLES WITH A WILLINGNESS TO EVOLVE. THEATRICAL POSITIONS ARE CRUCIAL TO CONSIDER BEFORE DESIGNING FOR A NEW TOMORROW, AS IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE. LASTLY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER PAST PROJECTS OR ACTIONS THAT IS REGARDED AS AN EXAMPLE TO THIS PLATFORM TO GUIDE IN SUBSEQUENT SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. CONSIDERING THESE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS OF RESEARCH WILL RESULT IN A SUCCESSFUL, WELL THOUGH OUT, RECONFIGURATION OF THE CITY OF PAIRS.
contextuAl issues
THE CITY OF PARIS, FRANCE HAS A CURRENT POPULATION OF 2,241,346 MILLION PEOPLE, WITH AN ESTIMATED 10.5 MILLION PEOPLE IN IT’S SURROUNDING SUBURBS, MAKING PARIS THE MOST POPULOUS URBAN AREA IN THE EUROPEAN UNION. PARIS’S URBANIZATION, KNOWN AS THE POLE URBAIN, COVERS 1,098 SQ MILES, WHICH IS ALMOST 27 TIMES LARGER THAN THE CITY ITSELF. THE ADMINISTRATION OF PARIS’S URBAN GROWTH IS DIVIDED BETWEEN ITSELF AND ITS SURROUNDING DEPARTMENTS. THE PETITE COURONNE IS PARIS’S CLOSEST RING OF 3 ADJOINING DEPARTMENTS, ARE FULLY SATURATED WITH URBAN GROWTH, AND THE RING OF 4 DEPARTMENTS OUTSIDE OF THESE, THE GRANDE COURONNE, ARE COVERED IN THEIR INNER REGIONS BY PARIS’S URBANIZATION. THE URBAN DEVELOPMENTS ARE FOCALIZED IN THE CENTRAL CORE WITH SPRAWLING CORRIDORS OUT TOWARDS THE URBAN AND METROPOLITAN AREAS. DURING PARIS’S PAST GROWTH OF URBANIZATION, THE CITY THEN SUFFERED FROM A LOSS OF POPULATION. THE CITY’S POPULATION LOSS REFLECTED THE EXPERIENCE OF MOST OTHER CORE CITIES IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD THAT HAVE NOT EXPANDED THEIR BOUNDARIES. DURING THE CITY’S LOSS OF POPULATION, THERE WAS A DRAMATIC MIGRATION OF RESIDENTS TO PARIS’S SUBURBS. FACTORS OF THIS MIGRATION INCLUDED DEINDUSTRIALIZATION, HIGH RENT, GENTRIFICATION OF THE INNER AREAS, AND GREATER AFFLUENCE AMONG WORKING FAMILIES. SINCE THEN AN INFLUX OF YOUNGER RESIDENTS AND IMMIGRANTS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE GROWTH OF THE CITY. IT WAS ESTIMATED BY THE POPULATION REFERENCE BUREAU THAT 76% OF THE POPULATION LIVED IN URBAN AREAS IN 2001. PARIS, HAD A POPULATION OF 9,608,000 IN THAT YEAR.

SDRIF 2030 THE PARIS REGION’S DEVELOPMENT MASTER PLAN FOR 2030 WAS DRAWN UP BY THE PARIS REGION IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE FRENCH STATE AND INVOLVED NUMEROUS PLANNING FACTORS IN THE REGION. IT SETS OUT THE CONDITIONS FOR CREATING A PLEASANT, ATTRACTIVE, SOCIALLY INTEGRATED AND ROBUST DESIGN. A NEW DEVELOPMENT PLAN FROM THE “DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR THE PARIS REGION,” CREATED IN 1932 WAS NEEDED IN ORDER TO SUSTAIN THE EXPECTED GROWTH RATE OF THE CITY. ALTHOUGH THE PLAN’S ORIGINAL OBJECTIVES ARE STILL RELEVANT, THE MOTIVATIONS AND RESPONSES TO THEM HAVE CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY. PARIS IS THE SECOND LARGEST REGION IN EUROPE AND THE WORLDS NUMBER ONE TOURIST DESTINATION. SUSTAINING THIS DYNAMIC AND ORGANIZING THE ASSOCIATED FLOWS WHILE PROTECTING PEOPLE’S DAY-TODAY QUALITY OF LIFE AND PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT MEANS SETTING OUT A VISION AND MOBILIZING THE RESOURCES TO RECONCILE, PRIORITIES AND COORDINATE THE RELEVANT PUBLIC POLICIES.
OBJECTIVES: IN TERMS OF IMPROVING THE DAY-TO-DAY LIVES OF PEOPLE IN THE PARIS REGION, THE SDRIF PLANS TO: - BUILD 70,000 HOMES A YEAR AND RENOVATE THE EXISTING STOCK TO RESOLVE THE HOUSING CRISIS. - CREATE 28,000 JOBS A YEAR AND PLACE MORE EMPHASIS ON MIXED HOUSING/ EMPLOYMENT AREAS. - GUARANTEE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY AMENITIES AND PUBLIC SERVICES. - DESIGN TRANSPORT SYSTEMS TO REDUCE DEPENDENCE ON THE CAR. -IMPROVE THE URBAN SPACE AND ITS NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. IN ORDER TO IMPROVE HOW THE PARIS REGION FUNCTIONS AS A METROPOLITAN AREA, THE SDRIF SETS OUT PLANS TO: - BOOST THE ECONOMIC DYNAMISM OF THE PARIS REGION. - SUPPORT A TRANSPORT SYSTEM THAT INCREASES ITS APPEAL. - DEVELOP ATTRACTIVE AMENITIES. - ENSURE SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF THE NATURAL ECOSYSTEM AND INCREASE THE ROBUSTNESS OF THE PARIS REGION.
THE SDRIF: DEVELOPMENT AND COMPOSITION METHODOLOGY
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN OUR PLANET CAN NO LONGER SUSTAIN US?

THEORETICAL POSITIONS
eCOLOGY ECOLOGY AND LANDSCAPE AGENTS OF CREATIVITY JAMES CORNER IN THE, “COLLECTED ESSAYS OF JAMES CORNER,” HE BRINGS ATTENTION TO ECOLOGY AND LANDSCAPES SERVING AS AGENTS OF CREATIVITY. CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE HAS DRAWN MORE FROM OBJECTIVIST AND INSTRUMENTAL MODELS OF ECOLOGY, WHILE DESIGN CREATIVITY HAS ALL BEEN REDUCED TO DIMENSIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM SOLVING AND AESTHETIC APPEARANCE. CORNER CLAIMS THAT ECOLOGY; CREATIVITY AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE MUST BE CONSIDERED IN TERMS OTHER OR GREATER THAN THOSE OF VISUAL APPEARANCE, RESOURCE VALUE, HABITAT STRUCTURE, OR INSTRUMENTALITY. HE URGES LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS TO STEER AWAY FROM THESE RESTRICTIVE TRADITIONAL WAYS, AND INSTEAD DESIGN TO RELATE ECOLOGY AND CREATIVITIES LANDSCAPES TO PEOPLE, PLACES AND THE COSMOS. HE BRINGS TO MY ATTENTIONS THE WAYS IN WHICH ECOLOGY HAS BEEN PRESENTED INTO THE LANDSCAPE IN AN INCORRECT MANNER, AND HOW PEOPLE CAN BETTER RELATE TO AN “UNFOLDING AN MULTIVARIATE ARTIFACT.” “THE ANSWERS, I BELIEVE, LIE WITHIN THE POWERS OF BOTH NATURAL AND CULTURAL AGENCIES IN THE EVOLVING OF LANDSCAPES THAT PRECIPITATE (AND ARE CAUGHT WITHIN) PROCESSES OF INDETERMINATION AND DIVERSIFICATION; LANDSCAPES THAT ENGAGE, ENABLE, DIVERSIFY, TRICK, EMANCIPATE, AND ELUDE—PUT SIMPLY, LANDSCAPES THAT FUNCTION AS ACTANTS, AS CONTINUAL TRANSFORMATIONS AND ENCOUNTERS THAT ACTIVELY RESIST CLOSURE AND REPRESENTATION.” JAMES CORNER
THE IDEA OF ECOLOGY HAS GAINED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF AWARENESS DUE TO MEDIA COVERAGE AND ECOLOGICAL ACTIVISM. ALTHOUGH, THE IDEA OF ECOLOGY HAS BEEN OVER DIVERSIFIED TO WHERE IT CAN NO LONGER BE USED WITH DEFINITE CLARITY. THE IDEAL CITY WILL STRIVE TO CONNECT ITS USERS TO THE ECOLOGICAL IDEA, AND ALLOW THEM TO BE PARTICIPANTS OF THE MOVEMENT. THE IDEAL CITY WILL IMMERSE ITS SOCIETY INTO VOCABULARIES, ATTITUDES, CUSTOMS, BELIEFS, AND SOCIAL FORMS OF THE ECOLOGICAL IDEA IN A CREATIVE MANNER. THIS IDEAL CITY WILL FOLLOW A CLIMATE ENERGY PLAN WITH SEVERAL ENERGY PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES TO ENSURE CONSTANT ADHERENCE TO SUSTAIN EFFORTS. IN HOPES, THAT THESE EFFORTS WILL ENCOURAGE INHABITANTS TO ADOPT ECO-FRIENDLY STANDARDS OF LIVING IN THEIR DAILY LIVE.
RESILIeNCE THE BIG U
BJARKE INGELS GROUP
THE BIG U IS A PROPOSED DESIGN IN COLLABORATION WITH NEW YORK CITY AND BJARKLE INGELS GROUP TO DEVELOP AND PROTECT LOWER MANHATTAN FROM FLOODWATERS, STORMS, AND OTHER IMPACTS OF A CHANGING CLIMATE. THE BIG U SHAPED LOWER MANHATTAN TO BE PROTECTED THROUGH A LOW-LYING TOPOGRAPHY SYSTEM OF A “BRIDGING BERM” BARRIER PLANTED WITH A SELECTION OF SALT-TOLERANT FLORA, AND INCLUDING PUBLIC SPACES AND VIEWPOINTS. THE BIG U DEFENSES ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE EXTENSIVE FLOODING EXPERIENCED BY LOWER MANHATTAN DURING A STORM, WHILE ALSO COMBATING SEA-LEVEL RISE EXPECTED AS A RESULT OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THE PROPOSED DESIGN IS ORGANIZED INTO “COMPARTMENTS” EACH CONSISTING OF A PHYSICALLY SEPARATE FLOOD-PROTECTION ZONE, ISOLATED FROM FLOODING IN THE OTHER ZONES, BUT EACH EQUALLY A FIELD FOR INTEGRATED SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY PLANNING. THE COMPARTMENTS WORK TOGETHER TO PROTECT AND ENHANCE THE CITY. THE BIG U USES THE THEORY OF RESILIENCE TO ADAPT THE CITY OF MANHATTAN TO OUR WARMING PLANET
RESILIENCE IS THE CAPACITY TO ADAPT TO CHANGING CONDITIONS AND TO MAINTAIN OR REGAIN FUNCTIONALITY AND VITALITY IN THE FACE OF STRESS OR DISTURBANCE. WHY NOT AIM TO CREATE A RESILIENT LANDSCAPE EVERY TIME WE DESIGN? THE IDEAL CITY WILL REDESIGN A CITY TO INVOLVE ADAPTATION TO THE LOCALIZED IMPACTS THAT ARE EXPECTED WITH A WARMING PLANT. THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE TIDAL FLOODING, AIR POLLUTION, AND AN ONGOING LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY. MUCH LIKE THE DESIGN ETHICS OF THE BIG U, REDEVELOPMENT AND RESTORATION WILL BOTH COEXIST AT THE IDEAL CITY GENERATING SYMMETRY OF RESILIENCY.
THE TRANSeCT DUANNT PLATER-ZYBERK &COMPANY “A TOWN IN SAVED, NOT MORE BY THE RIGHTEOUS MEN IN IT THAN BY THE WOODS AND SWAMPS THAT SURROUND IT.” HENRY DAVID THOREAU
A TRANSECT IS A CUT OR PATH THROUGH PART OF THE ENVIRONMENT SHOWING A RANGE OF DIFFERENT HABITATS. NATURALISTS USE THE TRANSECT CONCEPT TO DESCRIBE THE CHARACTERISTIC OF ECOSYSTEMS AND TRANSITIONS FROM ONE ECOSYSTEM TO ANOTHER. SINCE 2000, THIS IDEA HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO URBANISTS AS A NEW WAY TO PLAN PARTS OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT WITH SPECIALTY USES THAT DO NOT USUALLY FIT INTO A CITY SETTING. IN 2003, THE SMARTCODE WAS RELEASED BY DUANNY PLATER-ZYBERK & COMPANY WHICH IS A ZONING SYSTEM THAT REPLACED CONVENTIONAL SEPARATED-USE ZONING SYSTEMS. THE SIX TRANSECT ZONING SYSTEM PROVIDES THE BASIS FOR WALKABLE STREETS, MIXED USE, TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS, AND HOUSING DIVERSITY. THE RURAL-TO-URBAN TRANSECT IS DIVIDED INTO SIX ZONES: NATURAL, RURAL, SUB-URBAN, GENERAL URBAN, CENTER, AND CORE. THE TRANSECT SYSTEM ALLOWS SUCCESSIONAL POTENTIAL FOR COMMUNITIES TO EVOLVE GRACEFULLY AND SUSTAINABLY OVER GENERATIONS. THE IDEAL CITY MUST BE “IDEAL” FOR EVERYONE. PEOPLE THRIVE AND ENJOY DIFFERENT HABITATS. THE IDEAL CITY WILL STRIVE TO CREATE A BALANCE BETWEEN URBAN CENTERS AND A RURAL HABITAT, ALLOWING FOR THE BEST OF NATURE AND BEST OF URBANISM. THE HIERARCHICAL FRAMEWORK OF THE TRANSECT WILL HELP SHAPE THE PLANNING SYSTEM OF THE IDEAL CITY. AS IT WILL USE A SIMILAR DESIGN APPROACH TO STRATEGICALLY LAY OUT ITS “ZONES” WITH LITTLE TO NO DISCONNECT FROM PEOPLE TO NATURE. THE CITY WILL ATTEMPT ALL OF ITS BUILT ENVIRONMENTS TO BE SYNCED IN ORDER TO CREATE AN IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENT.
PRODUCTION THE PRODUCTIVE SURFACE MASON WHITE
IN, “THE PRODUCTIVE SURFACE,” MASON WHITE EXPLORES THE THEORY OF PRODUCTION AND HOW THE LEGACY OF HIGH MODERNISM HAS DOMINATED THE REPRESENTATION OF SURFACE IN ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE WITH A STRONG EMPHASIS IN FORM, TECHNIQUE, AND FUNCTION. FORM IS THE RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION OF WHAT THE SURFACE COULD BE; WHILE FUNCTION IS THE OPERATIONAL, A RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION OF WHAT THE SURFACE SHOULD BE. WHITE ARGUES THAT TODAY’S PRODUCTION SHOULD BE AN EXTENSION AND EVOLUTION OF SUSTAINABILITY WITHOUT “TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM.” THE TEXT RAISES ATTENTION TO THE SHIFT FROM FUNCTION TO PRODUCTION WITH AN END GOAL OF ARCHITECTURAL SURFACES SERVICING VARIOUSLY SCALED CONSTRUCTED ENVIRONMENTS. THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH ROOF DESIGN, SITE DESIGN, AND CONNECTING ARCHITECTURE TO THE WIDER CLIMATOLOGICAL AND ECOLOGICAL TERRITORY. A CITY HAS SERVED ITS ROLE, AND GONE ABOVE PEOPLE’S EXPECTATIONS FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW. BUT IN DOING SO, IT DAMAGED THE ECOSYSTEM AROUND IT. HOW CAN I CREATE AN IDEAL CITY WITHOUT DAMAGING THE ENVIRONMENT? THIS IDEAL CITY WILL USE PRODUCTION AS AN EXTENSION AND EVOLUTION OF SUSTAINABILITY WITH A TANGIBLE AND POSITIVE BYPRODUCT. TURNING A CITY RESPONSIVE TO ITS ENVIRONMENT YET OPERATIONAL CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH A PRODUCTIVE SURFACE. LANDSCAPE AS A PRODUCTIVE SURFACE ENTITLES A SUCCESSFUL ECONOMY, PROGRAMS, TYPOLOGIES, AND PUBLIC REALMS. IN SPECIFIC, CREATING EVERYTHING IN A LANDSCAPE TO BE “PRODUCTIVE” CAN BE ASSIGNING ROLES TO EVERY ASPECT OF A LANDSCAPE INCLUDING BUILDINGS WITH POSITIVE ENERGY OUTPUT, GREEN ROOFS, GREEN STREETS, AND MORE.

VISIONS OF PARIS AS A ‘SMART CITY’ IN 2050 ADDRESSES THE MAJOR SUSTAINABILITY PROBLEMS THAT AFFECT EACH DISTRICT OF PARIS WHILE ALSO PROVIDING KEY FUNCTIONS FOR THE CITY AS A WHOLE. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THESE ENERGY GOALS, EACH HIGH RISE BUILDING INTEGRATES SEVERAL ENERGY-PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES TO ENSURE THEIR CONSTANT ADHERENCE TO SUSTAINABLE EFFORTS, AS WELL AS ENCOURAGING IT’S USERS TO ADOPT ECO-FRIENDLY STANDARDS OF LIVING IN THEIR DAILY LIVES. PARIS 2050 IS A PARADISE OF PLANT – EMBEDDED SMART ARCHITECTURE. THESE ARCHITECTURE IS PART OF THE PLAN TO BOTH ADDRESS PARIS’ HOUSING AND DENSITY ISSUE BY DEVELOPING MULTIPLE HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS WITH POSITIVE ENERGY OUTPUT. COMPRISED OF EIGHT MULTI-USE STRUCTURES INHABITING VARIOUS LOCATIONS WITHIN PARIS. THIS PLAN STRIVES TO ADDRESS MAJOR SUSTAINABILITY PROBLEMS AFFECTING EACH DISTRICT, WHILE PROVIDING KEY FUNCTIONS FOR THE CITY. TO MEET THE PARIS’S CLIMATE ENERGY PLAN TO REDUCE 75% OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS IN THE NEXT 35 YEARS, THE ARCHITECTURE FIRM COLLABORATED WITH ENGINEERS AT SETEC BÂTIMENT TO DESIGN EIGHT PROTOTYPES FOR TOWERS THAT COULD BRING GREENERY BACK INTO THE CITY AND PROVIDE SOURCES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY. SIMILAR TO THE DESIGN INTENT, SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES, AND ENERGY PRODUCTION,PARIS SMART CITY PROVIDES A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THE REINVENTED CITY OF PARIS.
BIOSPHERE 2 INVENTOR\\ JOHN P. ALLEN LOCATION\\ ORACLE, ARIZONA. DATE\\ 1991-1993
BIOSPHERE 2 IS AN AMERICAN EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE RESEARCH CENTER LOCATED IN ORACLE, ARIZONA. ITS PURPOSE WAS TO CREATE AN ARTIFICIAL, MATERIALLY CLOSED ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM TO EXPLORE THE WEB OF INTERACTIONS WITHIN LIFE SYSTEMS IN DIFFERENT BIOLOGICAL DOMES. ITS 3.14-ACRES REMAINS THE LARGEST CLOSED MAN MADE ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM TILL THIS DATE. IN 1991, THE MISSION OF BIOSPHERE 2 WAS EXECUTED BY 8 HUMANS WHO LIVED IN THE ECOLOGICAL DOME FOR 2 YEARS IN ORDER TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF ABOUT THE USE OF A CLOSED BIOSPHERE AND GAIN INSIGHT IF HUMAN LIFE COULD BE SUSTAINED IN THE DOME WITHOUT HARMING EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE. THE SYSTEM IS ESSENTIALLY MATERIALLY CLOSED (6.2% LEAK RATE OF AIR PER YEAR); ENERGETICALLY OPEN WITH 16,000 SQUARE METERS OF GLASS SURFACE TAKING IN ABOUT 45% OF THE AMBIENT RADIATION, WITH A PEAK ENTRY OF 7,000 KILOWATTS OF SOLAR ENERGY; APPROXIMATELY 12,800 SQUARE METERS IN AIRTIGHT FOOTPRINT; WITH NEARLY 6,000,000 MOLES OR 180 TONS OF ATMOSPHERE; 4,500 CUBIC METERS OF WATER, FIVE-SIXTHS OF THAT IN ITS OCEAN; AND 28,000 TONS OF SOIL CONTAINING 3% CARBON. BIOSPHERE 2 STARTED OFF WITH AN ESTIMATED 20 TONS OF LIVING BIOMASS DISTRIBUTED IN ABOUT 4000 SPECIES. THIS AMOUNT WAS PROJECTED TO GROW TO 60 TONS OVER THE FIRST FEW YEARS. THE STABILIZED NUMBER OF SPECIES AT THAT TIME IS ESTIMATED TO BE BETWEEN 3000 AND 3800 OR A LOSS RANGE OF 5 -20%. THE PURPOSE OF THE BIOSPHERE 2 PROJECT IS THREEFOLD: TO ELUCIDATE THE LAWS OF BIOSPHERICS; TO CREATE THE CORPORATE CAPACITY TO DESIGN, BUILD, OPERATE, AND CONSULT ON THE MANAGEMENT OF ARTIFICIAL BIOSPHERES; AND TO ASSIST IN THE ECOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT OF THE HUMAN IMPACTS ON EARTH’S BIOSPHERE.
SIMILAR TO THE INTENT, INFRASTRUCTURE, AND TECHNOLOGY, BIOSPHERE 2 PROVIDES A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THE REINVENTED CITY OF PARIS.
