ULTIMATELY, THIS INTELLIGENCE MAY BE HUMANITY’S FATAL FLAW THAT JEOPARDIZES THE SURVIVAL OF EARTH. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN EARTH CAN NO LONGER SUSTAIN US? PARIS IS THE CAPITAL AND MOST POPULOUS CITY OF FRANCE. SINCE, THE 17TH CENTURY, PARIS HAS BEEN ONE OF EUROPE’S MAJOR CENTERS FOR FIANCÉ, COMMERCE, FASHION, SCIENCE, AND THE ARTS. AS A LEADER OF THE EUROPEAN UNION, FRANCE IS TRYING TO CHANGE RESOURCE USAGE AND PRODUCTION HABITS TO ULTIMATELY REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS. THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT IS CARRYING OUT MANY NATIONAL AND TERRITORIAL ACTION PLANS IN AN EFFORT TO REDUCE EMISSIONS OF POLLUTION INTO WATER. ADDITIONALLY, FRENCH WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS ARE BEING IMPROVED THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF VARIOUS INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAMS. IN RECENT YEARS, THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT HAS AGGRESSIVELY PURSUED THE EMBRACE OF CLEAN TECHNOLOGY THROUGH THE USE OF GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES. AS PARIS PROVES TO BE THE MOST PROGRESSIVE CITY ON EARTH, IT WILL CONTINUE TO LEAD THE WORLD, AS IT BECOMES THE PLATFORM FOR FUTURE CITIES TO FOLLOW. THE SPECIFIC LOCATION IS KNOWN AS PALAIS-BOURBON, OR THE 7TH ARRONDISSENMENT ENTERTAINS TOURISTS AS IT IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MAJOR AND WELL-KNOWN ATTRACTIONS OF PARIS. THIS CENTRAL ARRONDISSENMENT IS SITUATED ON THE LEFT BANK OF THE RIVER SEINE. IT IS ALSO HOME TO THE CHAMP DE MARS, A 60-ACRE PUBLIC GREEN SPACE. THE LOCATION HAS GREAT OPPORTUNITY AS IT COMBINES CITY ELEMENTS, GREEN SPACE, AND RUNNING WATER.

IN FACT, THE WORLD IS NOW NEARLY ONE DEGREE WARMER THAN IT WAS BEFORE WIDESPREAD INDUSTRIALIZATION. ONE DEGREE MAY NOT SOUND LIKE MUCH, BUT WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF GLOBAL TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO RISE? REPORTS SHOW IF THE WORLDS TEMPERATURE RISES BY TWO DEGREES, MOUNTAIN GLACIERS AND RIVERS WILL START TO DISAPPEAR AND MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS WILL SEE MORE LANDSLIDES, AS THE PERMAFROST THAT HELD THEM TOGETHER MELTS AWAY. BY 2100, SEA LEVELS COULD RISE BY A METER, DISPLACING 10% OF THE WORLD’S POPULATION. PEOPLE ARE PROJECTED TO FACE DEATH AS THEY STRUGGLE WITH THE INCREASING HEAT. THE ECOSYSTEM WILL COLLAPSE AND A THIRD OF ALL LIFE ON EARTH WILL FACE EXTINCTION. PLANT GROWTH PATTERNS WILL SHIFT, SLOW, AND EVENTUALLY STOP. THE WORLD’S FOOD SUPPLIES WILL DECREASE, AND WITHIN 85 YEARS, ONE THIRD OF THE PLANET WILL BE WITHOUT FRESH WATER. SO WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF TO OUR CLIMATE IF WE WERE TO STOP EMITTING THE CARBONS THAT ARE CAUSING ALL THIS DAMAGE? A SIMPLE ANSWER IS, WE ARE STILL DOOMED. THE RELEASED CARBON DIOXIDE WILL REMAIN IN THE ATMOSPHERE FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, IN A TIME SPAN MORE RELEVANT TO HUMANS, ONCE RELEASED THE CARBON DIOXIDE IS IN OUR ENVIRONMENT ESSENTIALLY FOREVER. OUR NEXT STEPS ARE VITAL TO SURVIVAL. ADDRESSING THE DAMAGE DONE TO OUR PLANET WILL REQUIRE AN ALTERATION OF LIVING STANDARDS.

THE CITY MUST HAVE WELL RESPECTED STANDARDS OF LIVING AND PRACTICES TO MAKE IT DESIRABLE YET FEASIBLE. THIS PROJECT REQUIRES INHABITANTS, MEANING IN PROXIMITY OF HOUSING. AS WELL AS SPACE FOR GROWTH, MEANING OPEN SPACE AND THE ABILITY FOR VERTICAL GROWTH IF NECESSARY. ADDITIONALLY, IT REQUIRES A CITY WITH AN INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE MINDSET. IN ORDER TO BECOME KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE CITY, IT’S PROCEDURES, AND TO ASSURE IT IS THE CORRECT CITY TO TEST-DRIVE THE PLATFORM MUCH RESEARCH WAS CONDUCTED ON THE CONTEXT OF PARIS. PARIS’S URBANIZATION, KNOWN AS THE POLE URBAIN, COVERS 1,098 SQ MILES, WHICH IS ALMOST 27 TIMES LARGER THAN THE CITY ITSELF. THE ADMINISTRATION OF PARIS’S URBAN GROWTH IS DIVIDED BETWEEN ITSELF AND ITS SURROUNDING DEPARTMENTS. THE BIG U IS A PROPOSED DESIGN IN COLLABORATION WITH NEW YORK CITY AND BJARKLE INGELS GROUP TO DEVELOP AND PROTECT LOWER MANHATTAN FROM FLOODWATERS, STORMS, AND OTHER IMPACTS OF A CHANGING CLIMATE. THE BIG U SHAPED LOWER MANHATTAN TO BE PROTECTED THROUGH A LOW-LYING TOPOGRAPHY SYSTEM OF A “BRIDGING BERM” BARRIER PLANTED WITH A SELECTION OF SALT-TOLERANT FLORA, AND INCLUDING PUBLIC SPACES AND VIEWPOINTS. THE BIG U DEFENSES ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE EXTENSIVE FLOODING EXPERIENCED BY LOWER MANHATTAN DURING A STORM, WHILE ALSO COMBATING SEA-LEVEL RISE EXPECTED AS A RESULT OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THE PROPOSED DESIGN IS ORGANIZED INTO “COMPARTMENTS” EACH CONSISTING OF A PHYSICALLY SEPARATE FLOOD-PROTECTION ZONE, ISOLATED FROM FLOODING IN THE OTHER ZONES, BUT EACH EQUALLY A FIELD FOR INTEGRATED SOCIAL AND COMMUNITY PLANNING. THE COMPARTMENTS WORK TOGETHER TO PROTECT AND ENHANCE THE CITY. THE BIG U USES THE THEORY OF RESILIENCE TO ADAPT THE CITY OF MANHATTAN TO OUR WARMING PLANET

RESILIENCE IS THE CAPACITY TO ADAPT TO CHANGING CONDITIONS AND TO MAINTAIN OR REGAIN FUNCTIONALITY AND VITALITY IN THE FACE OF STRESS OR DISTURBANCE. WHY NOT AIM TO CREATE A RESILIENT LANDSCAPE EVERY TIME WE DESIGN? THE IDEAL CITY WILL REDESIGN A CITY TO INVOLVE ADAPTATION TO THE LOCALIZED IMPACTS THAT ARE EXPECTED WITH A WARMING PLANT. THESE IMPACTS INCLUDE TIDAL FLOODING, AIR POLLUTION, AND AN ONGOING LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY. MUCH LIKE THE DESIGN ETHICS OF THE BIG U, REDEVELOPMENT AND RESTORATION WILL BOTH COEXIST AT THE IDEAL CITY GENERATING SYMMETRY OF RESILIENCY.


THE TRANSeCT DUANNT PLATER-ZYBERK &COMPANY “A TOWN IN SAVED, NOT MORE BY THE RIGHTEOUS MEN IN IT THAN BY THE WOODS AND SWAMPS THAT SURROUND IT.” HENRY DAVID THOREAU

A TRANSECT IS A CUT OR PATH THROUGH PART OF THE ENVIRONMENT SHOWING A RANGE OF DIFFERENT HABITATS. NATURALISTS USE THE TRANSECT CONCEPT TO DESCRIBE THE CHARACTERISTIC OF ECOSYSTEMS AND TRANSITIONS FROM ONE ECOSYSTEM TO ANOTHER. SINCE 2000, THIS IDEA HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO URBANISTS AS A NEW WAY TO PLAN PARTS OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT WITH SPECIALTY USES THAT DO NOT USUALLY FIT INTO A CITY SETTING. IN 2003, THE SMARTCODE WAS RELEASED BY DUANNY PLATER-ZYBERK & COMPANY WHICH IS A ZONING SYSTEM THAT REPLACED CONVENTIONAL SEPARATED-USE ZONING SYSTEMS. THE SIX TRANSECT ZONING SYSTEM PROVIDES THE BASIS FOR WALKABLE STREETS, MIXED USE, TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS, AND HOUSING DIVERSITY. THE RURAL-TO-URBAN TRANSECT IS DIVIDED INTO SIX ZONES: NATURAL, RURAL, SUB-URBAN, GENERAL URBAN, CENTER, AND CORE. THE TRANSECT SYSTEM ALLOWS SUCCESSIONAL POTENTIAL FOR COMMUNITIES TO EVOLVE GRACEFULLY AND SUSTAINABLY OVER GENERATIONS. THE IDEAL CITY MUST BE “IDEAL” FOR EVERYONE. PEOPLE THRIVE AND ENJOY DIFFERENT HABITATS. THE IDEAL CITY WILL STRIVE TO CREATE A BALANCE BETWEEN URBAN CENTERS AND A RURAL HABITAT, ALLOWING FOR THE BEST OF NATURE AND BEST OF URBANISM. THE HIERARCHICAL FRAMEWORK OF THE TRANSECT WILL HELP SHAPE THE PLANNING SYSTEM OF THE IDEAL CITY. AS IT WILL USE A SIMILAR DESIGN APPROACH TO STRATEGICALLY LAY OUT ITS “ZONES” WITH LITTLE TO NO DISCONNECT FROM PEOPLE TO NATURE. THE CITY WILL ATTEMPT ALL OF ITS BUILT ENVIRONMENTS TO BE SYNCED IN ORDER TO CREATE AN IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENT.


PRODUCTION THE PRODUCTIVE SURFACE MASON WHITE

IN, “THE PRODUCTIVE SURFACE,” MASON WHITE EXPLORES THE THEORY OF PRODUCTION AND HOW THE LEGACY OF HIGH MODERNISM HAS DOMINATED THE REPRESENTATION OF SURFACE IN ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE WITH A STRONG EMPHASIS IN FORM, TECHNIQUE, AND FUNCTION. FORM IS THE RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION OF WHAT THE SURFACE COULD BE; WHILE FUNCTION IS THE OPERATIONAL, A RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION OF WHAT THE SURFACE SHOULD BE. WHITE ARGUES THAT TODAY’S PRODUCTION SHOULD BE AN EXTENSION AND EVOLUTION OF SUSTAINABILITY WITHOUT “TECHNOLOGICAL DETERMINISM.” THE TEXT RAISES ATTENTION TO THE SHIFT FROM FUNCTION TO PRODUCTION WITH AN END GOAL OF ARCHITECTURAL SURFACES SERVICING VARIOUSLY SCALED CONSTRUCTED ENVIRONMENTS. THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH ROOF DESIGN, SITE DESIGN, AND CONNECTING ARCHITECTURE TO THE WIDER CLIMATOLOGICAL AND ECOLOGICAL TERRITORY. A CITY HAS SERVED ITS ROLE, AND GONE ABOVE PEOPLE’S EXPECTATIONS FOR QUITE SOME TIME NOW. BUT IN DOING SO, IT DAMAGED THE ECOSYSTEM AROUND IT. HOW CAN I CREATE AN IDEAL CITY WITHOUT DAMAGING THE ENVIRONMENT? THIS IDEAL CITY WILL USE PRODUCTION AS AN EXTENSION AND EVOLUTION OF SUSTAINABILITY WITH A TANGIBLE AND POSITIVE BYPRODUCT. TURNING A CITY RESPONSIVE TO ITS ENVIRONMENT YET OPERATIONAL CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH A PRODUCTIVE SURFACE. LANDSCAPE AS A PRODUCTIVE SURFACE ENTITLES A SUCCESSFUL ECONOMY, PROGRAMS, TYPOLOGIES, AND PUBLIC REALMS. IN SPECIFIC, CREATING EVERYTHING IN A LANDSCAPE TO BE “PRODUCTIVE” CAN BE ASSIGNING ROLES TO EVERY ASPECT OF A LANDSCAPE INCLUDING BUILDINGS WITH POSITIVE ENERGY OUTPUT, GREEN ROOFS, GREEN STREETS, AND MORE.

VISIONS OF PARIS AS A ‘SMART CITY’ IN 2050 ADDRESSES THE MAJOR SUSTAINABILITY PROBLEMS THAT AFFECT EACH DISTRICT OF PARIS WHILE ALSO PROVIDING KEY FUNCTIONS FOR THE CITY AS A WHOLE. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THESE ENERGY GOALS, EACH HIGH RISE BUILDING INTEGRATES SEVERAL ENERGY-PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES TO ENSURE THEIR CONSTANT ADHERENCE TO SUSTAINABLE EFFORTS, AS WELL AS ENCOURAGING IT’S USERS TO ADOPT ECO-FRIENDLY STANDARDS OF LIVING IN THEIR DAILY LIVES. PARIS 2050 IS A PARADISE OF PLANT – EMBEDDED SMART ARCHITECTURE. COMPRISED OF EIGHT MULTI-USE STRUCTURES INHABITING VARIOUS LOCATIONS WITHIN PARIS. BIOSPHERE 2 IS AN AMERICAN EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE RESEARCH CENTER LOCATED IN ORACLE, ARIZONA. ITS PURPOSE WAS TO CREATE AN ARTIFICIAL, MATERIALLY CLOSED ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM TO EXPLORE THE WEB OF INTERACTIONS WITHIN LIFE SYSTEMS IN DIFFERENT BIOLOGICAL DOMES. ITS 3.14-ACRES REMAINS THE LARGEST CLOSED MAN MADE ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM TILL THIS DATE. IN 1991, THE MISSION OF BIOSPHERE 2 WAS EXECUTED BY 8 HUMANS WHO LIVED IN THE ECOLOGICAL DOME FOR 2 YEARS IN ORDER TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF ABOUT THE USE OF A CLOSED BIOSPHERE AND GAIN INSIGHT IF HUMAN LIFE COULD BE SUSTAINED IN THE DOME WITHOUT HARMING EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE.
