Jamaica

Welcome to Easily recognised by its stunning white- and blacksand beaches, UNESCO World Heritage mountains, mesmerising waterfalls, vibrant culture, diverse dining options and rich history, Jamaica’s reputation as a travel destination precedes it. This combination of an idyllic setting with the warm and energetic atmosphere driven by its friendly people also makes it the ideal place for groups, meetings and incentives. It’s no surprise that Destination Jamaica is the hub for groups and conventions in the Caribbean, serving as both a functional location that is fully equipped to address a wide variety of needs and an inspiration that will reinvigorate your team and strengthen your brand. Those travelling from the U.S. benefit from the Protocol to the Income Tax Treaty with Jamaica, which makes expenses incurred by U.S. citizens and residents attending a convention, seminar or similar event in Jamaica tax deductible. These expenses can include anything from registration and transportation to accommodations and meals. Visitors from all countries benefit from the direct flights from countless cities to the island’s three international airports — two of which feature top-notch VIP airport lounges that make arrival at your destination a breeze and departure a pleasure. The multiple resort areas, including Kingston, Port Antonio, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril and South Coast, reflect the diverse character of the island and offer an array of accommodation options, meeting and convention facilities, golf courses, natural sights, historic treasures, tours and attractions, as well as the destination management companies that can get you and the rest of your group right where you want to be. And everyone is treated to Jamaica’s premier service philosophy. So what are you waiting for? Come, meet with us!

Location

The Montego Bay Convention Centre has the advanatge of having a prime location. Sangster International Airport is just 15 minutes away, and surrounding the convention centre are more than 4,000 hotel rooms, a cluster of restaurants and bars, five shopping centres, and three 18-hole championship golf courses.

Meeting & Event Space

The Montego Bay Convention Centre is the largest facility of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. The more than 139,000 square feet of event space includes the 57,525-square-foot

24 2018/2019

Exhibition Hall, which spans two buildings and offers room for 282 booths, 4,700 guests seated banquet style or 6,200 seated theatre style. For special events, the 18,684-squarefoot Grand Ballroom can seat up to 1,580 for banquets. The nine well-appointed meeting rooms offer 10,161 square feet, with the largest accomodating up to 600 attendees. The centre also boasts a 17,000-square-foot Ocean Terrace, which can seat up to 1,500 guests banquet style. The centre’s courtyard is capable of holding up to 2,600 guests for receptions within its 25,000 square feet of space. Besides its intelligent design, the convention centre is also visually striking. Attendees have views of both the coast and the mountains, and the centre’s plantation-style shutters and cutstone work are reminiscent of Jamaica’s classic Georgian-style architecture. The open-air layout of the facility — meeting, exhibition and ballroom spaces are all housed in three separate buildings and connect via outdoor walkways — gives attendees the chance to enjoy the outdoor environment more than a typical convention centre might allow. As for on-site technology, all of the convention centre’s meeting, exhibit and ballroom spaces are equipped with video-conferencing capabilities and high-speed internet. A full-service business centre,

a fully integrated broadcast and teleconference system and an on-site team of audiovisual technicians are all available to help ensure that meetings and events are thoroughly supported and run smoothly.

estled between the Blue Mountains and the world’s seventh-largest natural harbour is Jamaica’s vibrant capital. Voted one of the top 52 Places to Go in 2017 by The New York Times, Kingston is a city of two halves that will excite you with distinct natural beauty and cosmopolitan flair. It is this combination that provides visitors with an endless itinerary. Whether in search of cultural pursuits, naturebased activities, exquisite fare or fabulous shopping.

TOP ATTRACTIONS

IS PART OF THE ISLAND’S DNA, SO PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE MAN WHO STARTED IT ALL IS ESSENTIAL.

Rising out of the lush jungle north of Kingston at 7,402 feet, the Blue Mountains are a glorious backdrop. The majestic range is part of the Blue & John Crow Mountains National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Best known as the source of Blue Mountain coffee, the mountains are a favourite destination with adventure travellers and anyone looking to see what lies beyond the beach. Within the city, you can take in the wonders of nature at Hope Botanical Gardens. Laid out across 2,000 acres, it is the largest open green space within the city’s urban boundaries and the largest botanical garden in the Caribbean. Here, you will be surrounded by an abundance of flora and fauna, from cacti to bougainvilleas. Hope Zoo is home to 900 animals across 60 species. Kingston may not be known for its beaches, but locals flock to the shores of Fort Clarence. It features changing rooms, showers, toilets and lifeguards, plus two nearby restaurants serving up fresh fish and more. Big wave enthusiasts head to Jamnesia Surf Camp in Bull Bay, just 20 minutes east of Kingston.

Reggae music is part of the island’s DNA, so paying tribute to the man who started it all is essential. The Bob Marley Museum is located at the legendary musician’s home. It’s where Marley recorded and lived until his death in 1981. His simple bedroom has been left untouched, as have the bullet holes from a failed assassination attempt in 1976. Make sure to take a few pictures of the famous statue of the singer in the courtyard. The Peter Tosh Museum opened its doors in 2016. Tosh, another iconic reggae musician and a founding member of The Wailers, was an activist for equal rights who used music to take a stand until he was tragically killed in 1987. The museum celebrates his life and accomplishments. Another popular attraction is Devon House, an elegant, Georgian-style Great House built in 1881 by George Stiebel, the Caribbean’s first black millionaire. The lush, sprawling porperty has been beautifully restored by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. Whilst there, stop by the Devon House I Scream Shop, voted one of the Top 10 Places to Eat Ice Cream in the world by National Geographic. OURJAMAICAMAGAZINE.COM

KINGSTON

KINGSTON Venture east of Kingston to reach the old pirate enclave of Port Royal, where you’ll be regaled with swashbuckling tales about the original city of sin. After invading and capturing the small port town from the Spanish in 1655, the English invited pirates there. Resting on the Kingston Harbour, Port Royal was once vital to Jamaica’s trade and commerce. The decadence and debauchery that ensued have become the stuff of legend, and now the quaint seaside town is more of a curiosity. Cobblestone roads, Spanish architecture, moats and forts, make Port Royal an intriguing spot only 45 minutes from Kingston.

Food lovers are drawn to Jamaica’s melting pot of flavours. From the street corner to the fanciest gourmet spot, Kingston has some of the best offerings. At the heart of it all is Coronation Market, with its authentic slice of island agriculture. If you’re in the mood for a seaside feast, head to Festival Marketplace, which is right on the waterfront. Pepperwood Jerk (formerly Scotchies Jerk Centre) offers authentic jerk chicken prepared to perfection. Kingston has always had a vibrant nightlife. The Blend Bar & Lounge is a trendy spot. Located at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, it could easily rival the best bars in New York City and Miami. Located in the centre of New Kingston, Spanish Court Hotel’s Sky Bar also boasts stunning views, along with a must-try 50-foot lap pool. For a night of dancing, visit Fiction Fantasy, an upscale nightclub that’s home to some of the island’s best DJs.

FESTIVALS Kingston’s calendar is also packed with a delicious array of culinary events. The Jamaica Food & Drink Festival in October is a five-day celebration of the finest food and drink Jamaica has to offer. Also in October is the Kingston Jerk Gospel Music Festival, which mixes traditional Jamaican fare and celebrity chefs with the Caribbean’s leading gospel acts. In November, Restaurant Week — which spans Kingston, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios — features specially selected three-course, fixedprice dinner menus and lunch specials at dozens of premier restaurants.

UNIQUE FINDS Kingston fashion balances the trends of today with a tropical flair that has become its own brand of Caribbean style. Events like Jamaica’s Take Style Out — during which stores offer deep discounts — is a testament to this. Like the fashion scene, the world of locally made goods is buzzing. Jamaicanmade soaps, candles, T-shirts, jams and jellies, sauces and jewellery can be found throughout the capital. Arts and crafts are available at Grosvenor Galleries, Island Art and Framing, Craft Cottage, the National Gallery of Jamaicas and along many of Kingston’s streets. Shoppers should also consider one of Kingston’s many fairs. Held at Devon House several times a year, Market on The Lawn features art, crafts, jewellery, fashion, food and other items. The city also hosts a number of Christmas fairs.

Far from being exclusively a tourism destination, Kingston leverages its tropical appeal for those who want to work and play where they stay. The Jamaica Conference Centre on the Kingston waterfront offers premier facilities and services in the city for meetings, incentives, conventions and events. Having Norman Manley International airport nearby makes for easy transfers to any venue in town. The airport’s award-winning Club Kingston VIP lounge, with its Meet & Greet service, makes travel a pleasure again. Individual properties, such as the AAA Four Diamond Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel feature impressive meeting venues complemented by personalised service.

It is home to three Marine Protected Areas, including the Montego Bay Marine Park, which has shoreline, coral reef, seagrass bed and mangrove ecosystems. History buffs enjoy the Bellefield Great House and Gardens, one of the oldest sugar plantations in Jamaica. Built in the 1600s as a militia outpost for the British, it became the official residence of the Kerr-Jarretts — one of the city’s most renowned families — for six generations. With 10 acres of lush gardens and manicured lawns, it is a popular venue for weddings and events. The Rose Hall Great House has a darker past. Legend has it that the ghost of Annie Palmer haunts the restored 1770’s Georgian mansion. Visit the property to learn about the plantation mistress, who practised voodoo, tortured slaves and killed two husbands before being strangled to death by her lover. Nearby Good Hope Estate is equipped to offer all manner of activities. Tours of the estate can be thrilling — think river tubing and zip lining — or more relaxed affairs, like a high tea service or a horseand-carriage ride through the property.

Another top spot is Ciao Jamaica, where Italian-Jamaican offerings include dishes like jerk chicken Alfredo, West Indies seafood linguine and Caribbean calzones. Over on Negril’s West End, the seasonal menu at The Lodge at Tensing Pen Resort guarantees the freshest ingredients and flavours.

The highlight of the West End is the internationally renowned Rick’s Café. Situated on rocky cliffs about 35 feet above the ocean, the major highlight there is watching the cliff divers or taking the plunge yourself. Also in West End is Hungry Lion, an eclectic, brightly coloured café featuring a changing menu of mostly fish and vegetarian dishes, like a vegetarian shepherd’s pie or quesadillas stuffed with shrimp and cheese. TOP ATTRACTIONS Negril’s crown jewel is Seven Mile Beach, an expansive stretch of sand and surf that is as picturesque as it is enjoyable. This free beach features public picnic tables, showers and restrooms, as well as water sports operators offering rentals like kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and sailboats. Of course, you could always just soak up the sun while lounging all day. Though it might be Negril’s most famous beach, Seven Mile Beach is certainly not the only one worth visiting. Bloody Bay Beach — or “the other Negril beach,” as it’s often called — is quite popular amongst the locals and is equally beautiful. The Negril Marine Park located at the Negril Environmental Protection Area is a favourite amongst nature lovers, especially those who love marine life. The park is divided into several recreational zones and provides a unique opportunity to view the local marine ecosystem. It encompasses the coastline, mangroves, offshore marine environments and coral reefs. Majestic Mayfield Falls is about an hour away in Westmoreland. With 21 natural pools and over 52 varieties of ferns, this off-the-beaten-path natural spa is one of Jamaica’s hidden gems. An experienced guide leads a 45-minute climb through mineral-infused waters whilst revealing various secrets of the falls.

True aquaphiles will enjoy YS Falls, located in nearby St. Elizabeth. A source of logwood in the early 1800s, in 1992 the YS Estate opened its stunning seven-tiered cascading falls to the public. The property has since undergone impressive renovations, featuring additional pools, as well as an exciting zip line over the falls.

TOP ATTRACTIONS Not far from town, Blue Lagoon is the island’s largest spring-fed lagoon, plunging nearly 180 feet. Ice-cold mountain spring water collides with warm tidal currents, making bathing in its depths a mystical experience. From Blue Lagoon, you can hire a river rafting captain for another quintessential Portie experience: rafting on the Rio Grande. Originally used to transport produce, primarily bananas, Errol Flynn was the first to promote rafting for pleasure. Aboard the rafts passengers get a unique view of the island, navigating through bamboo and banana groves. Many stop at Belinda’s Riverside Canteen to enjoy great Jamaican fare right at the river’s edge, like janga soup (Jamaican crayfish) and bussu soup (a sea snail).

RIVER RAFTING ON THE RIO GRANDE IS ANOTHER QUINTESSENTIAL PORTIE EXPERIENCE.

rrol Flynn — a Hollywood legend and one of the city’s most famous residents during the 1950s — said Port Antonio is “more beautiful than any woman I had ever known.” The sleepy town located just 60 miles from Kingston offers respite for those in search of tranquillity. As the capital city of Portland Parish, Port Antonio is defined by a rich history of banana exports, river rafting and attracting the glamorous Hollywood set of the 1940s. Today, it is celebrated for its timeless and authentic Jamaican experience — one that still attracts the world’s jet-set crowd, but in a much more understated manner.

There is also something magical about waterfalls, and Port Antonio boasts two of the island’s most breathtaking: Reach Falls and Somerset Falls. Reach Falls is located on Driver’s River and flows from the John Crow Mountains to form crystal-clear rock pools on its way down. Its main pool was the location of the waterfall scene in the movie Cocktail, starring Tom Cruise. Somerset Falls is steeped in history. The 97-acre property encompasses lush gardens and “hidden falls” accessible by boat. Visitors traverse a winding path through a rich tropical landscape — which leads through deep rock pools and natural caves — before witnessing the Daniels River cascade into a 20-footdeep pool. Back on shore at the iconic Frenchman’s Cove, visitors enjoy the unique merging of fresh river mineral spring water and the temperate ocean. Those looking for a “wilder” sea experience head to Winnifred Beach to explore the reef just offshore, perfect for snorkelling. Shady trees, white sand and food vendors make it the perfect place to lounge all day. Heading east, Long Bay

Beach offers one of the island’s longest uninterrupted stretches of breathtaking coastline, as well as rolling surf. From the shores to the mountains, the heights of Port Antonio open a window to the local Maroon history and culture. The descendants of escaped slaves, the Maroons established free communities in the mountainous north of the island in the 17th century. Nanny, sometimes referred to as Queen Nanny, led the Maroons of Portland for years, heading the community and organising slave-freeing raids. Her work led to the 1739 peace treaty offered by the Jamaican governor that included 2,500 acres of land for her people. Self-governing Maroon settlements exist on the same land to this day. Travellers can learn more about their story at the Charles Town Museum and Safu Yard, where their history, artefacts, traditional herbalism and musical performances are presented.

UNIQUE FINDS Shopping in Port Antonio can be exceedingly rewarding, as fine jewellery and other high-quality items are often found at a much lower price point than in other parts of the island. NAMED AFTER AN ENSLAVED COUPLE THAT WAS SO IN LOVE THAT THE PARTNERS CHOSE TO LEAP TO THEIR DEATHS RATHER THAN BE SEPARATED.

The beaches are a perfect place to start exploring South Coast’s shoreline. Characterised by rocky coves, black-sand beaches and secluded swimming spots, Treasure Beach is just what its name implies. This six-mile stretch features both white and black sand (the black resulting from traces of iron) and is known for its four bays: Billy’s, Calabash, Frenchman’s and Fort Charles Great Bay. Fonthill Beach Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural refuge. Though relatively small, the park is well organised, offering visitors a number of amenities, including a roped-off swimming area, showers, changing facilities, restrooms, picnic tables and lifeguards. It is part of a large wildlife sanctuary that is home to about 200 crocodiles and an array of wading birds. In addition, the sanctuary serves as the nesting grounds for hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles, as well as countless migratory birds. YS Falls is one of the island’s most magnificent waterfalls. This seven-tiered waterfall, with vast wading pool fed by underground springs, offers a diverse selection of activities, from a canopy zip line to refreshing natural spring pools and acres of tropical gardens.

ocated three hours from Montego Bay’s airport, the South Coast is quite removed from the more frequented towns of the island; yet its quiet and historical presence can’t be overlooked. With seaside ambience spanning three parishes — Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth and Manchester — this region lays claim to vast stretches of beach that are completely isolated. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

are treated to local and organic dishes that showcase the bounty of the land and rotate according to the seasons. Not a full moon? Head to Jack Sprat, also located at Jakes, for their famous conch soup and fully loaded, freshly made pizza. From the land to the sea, fresh seafood — fish, conch and crab — is abundant here. But the South Coast’s most iconic food treat would be pepper shrimp. Little plastic bags filled with bright red, spicy and salty gems are found throughout the drive through Middle Quarters; and these peppa swimps, as they are called, are a South Coast staple. So, too, is Little Ochie, the well-known fishing beach where you will find some of the freshest fish on the island. Visit during the week, when it is a little quieter and crowds are fewer, and watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch.

Black River is also a quintessential stop in this region. The second-longest river in Jamaica (after the River Minho), it gets its name because of the dark riverbed below that consists of decomposing vegetation. Now, it is the launching point for an exciting river tour, which takes you on a journey through Jamaica’s morass landscape. The Morass is home to saltwater crocodiles and a variety of birds, including egrets and herons. Milk River, which is known as one of the most radioactive rivers in the world, can also be explored from this area. Visitors and locals flock there to experience the healing properties of the water. On average, the waters are 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (32 to 35 degrees Celsius) throughout the year and contain high levels of magnesium, calcium, sulphate and natural chloride. The minerals are recommended for those suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica and nerve complaints. Visit Lover’s Leap, named after an enslaved couple that was so in love that the partners chose to leap to their deaths rather than be separated. This spot is surrounded by breathtaking vistas of Cutlass Bay and the Caribbean Sea. A wooden carving of the two lovers stands vigil over the 1,700-foot cliff. Nearby, Lover’s Leap Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the Western Hemisphere. You can now spend the day there at the recently opened restaurant and bar, operated by Jake’s Hotel, and wrap the day up with a tour of the lighthouse.

Most Jamaican ATMs (called ABMs) accept international bank cards with Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus or Plus logos.

Major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted throughout the island.

BUSES

CURRENCY

Buses offer a cheap way to get around town, though it might be an unfamiliar experience to many foreigners. Bus stands are rarely marked and vehicles do not follow a strict schedule. Some resorts offer shuttle excursions to popular sites. Check with your hotel’s concierge.

The currency of Jamaica is the Jamaica Dollar. Licenced “cambio” (exchange) centres and commercial banks are accessible in all resort areas. Official currency exchange rates vary daily, so it’s advisable to shop around for the best rate before converting your cash.

CLIMATE

CUSTOMS AND DUTY

Jamaica enjoys a tropical climate, characterised by high temperatures and humid conditions year-round. Average temperature ranges from 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) to 99 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). Though it’s known for its warmth and ample sunshine, the island experiences two rainy seasons from May to June and September to November. Also, hurricanes may pass over the island primarily from June to September. It may rain during your stay, but don’t worry. Most visitors find the short tropical showers provide a welcome respite from the afternoon heat.

United States residents who have been out of the country for 48 hours or more may take home items valued up to US$800 once every 30 days without incurring duty. Adults may include 200 cigarettes, 100 cigars and one litre of alcohol. A second litre of alcohol is allowed duty-free if it is produced by a Caribbean Basin country. Family members who return home together may combine their personal exemptions on a joint declaration. Visit cbp.gov/xp/ cgov/travel/id_visa/kbyg/customs_duty_ info.xml for more information. Canadian residents who have been out of the country for more than 48 hours

can claim up to CAN$300 worth of goods without paying duty if they carry the goods with them. After each absence of seven days or more, they can claim up to CAN$800 worth of goods without duty. Except for tobacco products and alcohol, they do not need to have the goods with them. Visit cbsa-asfc.gc.ca for more information. United Kingdom residents 17 or older may take home duty-free two litres of table wine and one litre of spirits or liquors, or two litres of fortified or sparkling wine or other liquors; 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars or 250 g of tobacco; 60 cc of perfume and 250 cc of eau de toilette; plus other goods worth up to £145. Travellers cannot group their allowances. For more information, visit hmrc.gov.uk.

mph (50 kmph) in urban areas and 50 mph (80 kmph) on highways. Given the mountainous terrain, rural roads are often winding, bumpy and narrow. Visitors can rent cars in most major towns and cities, and, usually, clients must be no less than 25 years old in order to rent. The driver and all passengers are required to wear safety belts, and children under 3 years old must travel in infant carriers or child safety seats. All drivers are required to carry a valid licence. Jamaica recognises valid international driver’s licences, but visitors from North America may use their country’s licence for up to three months per visit, and United Kingdom residents may use theirs for up to one year.

DRUGS

There is a $37 departure tax that must be paid upon departure. However, most airlines include this tax in their airline tickets.

In Jamaica, the use, sale and possession of drugs such as marijuana (ganja), cocaine, crack, ecstasy, heroin and any other controlled substances is illegal. Offenders are subject to severe punishment, including arrest, fines and/or imprisonment.

DRIVING

ELECTRICITY

In Jamaica, drivers must keep to the left, although some flexibility is required to avoid collisions with pedestrians and domestic animals. The speed limit is 30

Standard electrical service is similar to that of the United States and Canada: 110 volts, 50 cycles AC. However, there is 220 volts service available at some hotels.

AIRLINES

As with any place in the world, you should always remember to follow basic precautions. Keep luggage in view at all times and your personal effects close to your body; don’t carry large amounts of cash; and avoid wearing expensive jewellery outside of your resort.

TAXIS Taxis are the most convenient mode of transportation, but are not the cheapest. All registered taxis in Jamaica are required by law to have red “PPV” licence plates. Do not to board any taxi operating illegally. Although taxis have metres, drivers rarely use them and prefer to negotiate fares instead. It is best to discuss fare with the driver before boarding the taxi. The fastest and most economical taxis are those locals call “route taxis” — cars that drive a designated course and pick up

and drop off passengers at will. These are shared cabs that will usually pack several people willing to go on the same route.

TIPPING It is customary to leave a 10 to 15 percent gratuity at restaurants. Make sure to check your bill, as some establishments will include the gratuity in your total.

WATER All piped water in Jamaica is treated and purified in accordance with international standards. You may drink, bathe and brush your teeth with it.•

Hotel & Tourist Association THE JAMAICA HOTEL AND TOURIST

This Page Hard Rock Café Montego Bay

72 2018/2019

Association is now in its 57th year of representing the thriving hospitality and tourism sector of Jamaica. Through partnerships with entities and representation on the boards of government agencies such as the Jamaica Tourist Board, Tourism Product Development Company, Tourism Enhancement Fund, the Association has been successful in delivering its mandate of supporting the sustainability of Jamaica’s tourism industry.

The Association has an unwavering commitment to ensuring that our members operate in an environment which is favourable to their growth. We also place keen focus on giving our members the tools they need to thrive through an on-going focus on best practices in marketing, technology, finance, environmental awareness and service delivery. This is done by way of seminars, workshops, webinars and General Manager’s Think Tanks - which encourage sharing between members of industry. We ensure that our members are equipped to not only do business, but to do business well. We are also the host of Jamaica’s premier travel trade show, Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX) which sees annually some 800 attendees from around the world keen on learning more about Jamaica’s tourism product, making connections and closing deals with the island’s hoteliers, attractions and tour operators. We are the organisation behind the Our Jamaica magazine -Jamaica’s official in room visitor guide, which we hope will be your companion as you explore our beautiful island. Bask in the sunshine, explore Jamaica’s hidden treasures, have the beat of reggae music run through your veins as you make our island your home away from home. OURJAMAICAMAGAZINE.COM
