MERIT SCHOOL OF MUSIC THE MERIT SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN THE WEST LOOP OF CHICAGO STRIVES TO MAKE MUSIC ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE FOR ALL. A PROPOSED EXTENSION FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS IN THE TUITIONFREE CONSERVATORY PROGRAM WOULD PROVIDE ONE HUNDRED ADDITIONAL PRACTICE ROOMS, CLASSROOMS, CAFE, AND AUDITORIUM.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS FALL 2012 // JOHN DESALVO

FORCES OF ATTRACTION:

THE MERIT SCHOOL IS A SYNTHESIS OF TWO ELEMENTS: ART AND EDUCATION. AS SUCH, FORCES OF ATTRACTION – A KIND OF MAGNETISM – IS IMAGINED TO EXIST BETWEEN THE MERIT SCHOOL AND THE LOCATIONS OF THESE ELEMENTS IN THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT.

THIS ATTRACTION ALTERS THE FORM OF THE BUILDING BY PULLING ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM TOWARDS THEIR CORRESPONDING CENTERS AROUND THE SITE. THESE FORCES ALSO ACT UPON THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING. GAPS LEFT IN THE FLOOR PLATES AS DIFFERENT PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS WERE PULLED ONE DIRECTION OR ANOTHER WERE CONSOLIDATED INTO TWO MAIN VOIDS SURROUNDING THE THEATER.

ONE VOID PROVIDES VISUAL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN LEVELS ON THE INTERIOR. THE OTHER VOID IS EXTERIOR, ALLOWING THE STUDENTS TO USE NATURE AS A CREATIVE PLATFORM. THE VOIDS ALSO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE AUDITORIUM AS THE SPACE WHERE THE CULMINATION OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF THE MERIT SCHOOL IS EXPRESSED. ITS SHAPE REFLECTS THIS DYNAMIC ROLE.

A FRAME OF CONCRETE BEAMS SUPPORTS THE AUDITORIUM ROOF. TRIANGULATION PLACES THE MEMBERS IN COMPRESSION RATHER THAN BENDING, ALLOWING THE SPAN:DEPTH RATIO TO INCREASE. THE SHAPE ALSO ADDS VIRTUAL DEPTH TO THE SYSTEM TO HELP WITH UNBALANCED LOADS. LOADS ARE ULTIMATELY TRANSFERRED DOWNWARD THROUGH CONCRETE BEARING / SHEAR WALLS AROUND THE PERIMETER.

INTERPRETATION

(re: HONEST EXPRESSION) IDEAS ARE THE INTANGIBLE MADE TANGIBLE. HONEST EXPRESSION IS A REFLECTION ON THE CREATIVE CYCLE PERPETUATED BY OUR PERSONAL INTERPRETATIONS OF PHYSICAL FORM.

PUBLIC LIBRARY

MASONRY COMPETITION // PULLMAN, WASHINGTON SECOND PLACE // FALL 2009 // TAIJI MIYASAKA

THE WALL IS ARGUABLY THE MOST POWERFUL EXPRESSION OF MASONRY. THE LIBRARY THUS AIMS TO ESTABLISH NEW RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PATRON AND WALL. STRATEGIES FOR INDIRECT DAYLIGHTING WERE STUDIED TO CREATE A BRIGHT AND EVENLY LIT INTERIOR ENVIRONMENT WELL SUITED FOR BOTH READING AND STUDYING. SETBACKS ON THE WALLS PREVENT GLARE FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT. TRANSLUCENT SKYLIGHTS PROVIDE DIFFUSE LIGHT FROM ABOVE AND ALLOW CHANGING EXTERIOR CONDITIONS TO BE REFLECTED ON THE INTERIOR.

THE DIFFERENT QUALITIES OF LIGHT ACHIEVED THROUGHOUT THE DAY ALLOW USERS TO CHOOSE THE SPACES MOST APPROPRIATE TO THEIR NEEDS, IN TURN ACTIVATING THE SPACES WITHIN. A SLOPING PUBLIC LAWN BRINGS USABLE OPEN SPACE AND NEW LIFE TO A PROMINENT DOWNTOWN INTERSECTION. ACTIVITIES IN TWO NEW PLAZAS WOULD BE CENTERED AROUND THEIR ACCESS TO SHADE OR SUNLIGHT, AND OPENINGS IN THE THREE WALLS CORRESPOND TO MAJOR PEDESTRIAN ACCESS POINTS.

FROM THE EXTERIOR, THE LIBRARY APPEARS AS THREE SIMPLE WALLS, RISING FROM THE GROUND. TO PRESERVE THIS VISUAL SIMPLICITY, THE “WALLS” OF THE LIBRARY ARE CONNECTED UNDERGROUND. THREE WALLS ALSO SERVE TO SEPARATE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OF THE LIBRARY. EACH AREA CONTAINS FUNCTIONS FOR A DIFFERENT USER GROUP: GENERAL ADULT, YOUNG ADULT, AND CHILDREN’S SECTIONS. THIS PROVIDES NEEDED ACOUSTICAL SEPARATION, AND ALLOWS A GREATER FOCUS ON THE UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS OF EACH USER GROUP.

SOCCER COMPLEX IN 2009, THE CITY OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON HAD PLANS TO DEVELOP THREE PARCELS OF THE SPOKANE RACEWAY PARK INTO A 185 ACRE SOCCER COMPLEX. MY PROPOSALS FOR THE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING AND INDOOR SOCCER GYM WERE INCLUDED IN THE yAIAg REFLECT, ENGAGE, INVEST EXHIBITION IN SPOKANE, SHOWCASING WORK FROM LOCAL STUDENTS AND INTERNS. FORMAL STRATEGIES WERE DEVELOPED FROM DIFFERENT QUALITIES UNIQUE TO THE GAME OF SOCCER. ARCHITECTURAL DUALITIES AND CONTINUOUS MOTION BECAME CONSISTENT THEMES THROUGHOUT BOTH BUILDINGS.

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, SPOKANE, WASHINGTON SPRING 2009 // DEBORAH BARNSTONE

THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING ALSO INSPIRES A SENSE OF CONTINUOUS MOTION THROUGH ITS FORM. THE SECTION OF THE BUILDING WAS DEVELOPED TO ALLOW THE EYE FREEDOM TO MOVE BETWEEN DIFFERENT LEVELS OF THE BUILDING AND FOLLOW THE MOVEMENTS OF OTHER PEOPLE. CONSEQUENTLY, ONE’S EYE WILL NEVER BE AT REST. ON A MACRO LEVEL, THE BUILDING INSPIRES MOVEMENT BY PROJECTING FOUR GLAZED EXTENSIONS OUT INTO THE LANDSCAPE. THEY ARE POSITIONED TO MAXIMIZE VIEWS TO THE SURROUNDING SOCCER FIELDS, THUS CONNECTING ONE WITH THE SITE FROM WITHIN.

THE PRIVATE FUNCTIONS OF THE INDOOR SOCCER FACILITY ARE CONTAINED IN A SERIES OF LINEAR STRUCTURES WITHIN THE LARGER, MOSTLY PLANAR PUBLIC SPACE. THIS BUILDING WAS ALSO AN EXPLORATION IN WEAVING SPACE - A CONCEPT APPLIED TO BOTH THE FORM AND CIRCULATION OF THE BUILDING. THE INTERIOR IS ALSO VISUALLY WOVEN THROUGH PLACING SIMILAR ELEMENTS ALTERNATELY IN THE FOREGROUND AND BACKGROUND OF ONE’S VISION. A SERIES OF CATWALKS PROVIDE VIEWING PLATFORMS AND CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO FIELDS.

SPORT & CULTURE CENTER THE LINES BETWEEN SPORT AND CULTURE ARE OFTEN BLURRED. ESPECIALLY WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTS SUCH AS PARKOUR, BOTH SPORT AND CULTURE CAN BE MEANS OF EXPRESSION. ACTS OF EXPRESSION GIVE LIFE TO THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS THE INTANGIBLE MADE TANGIBLE. IN ARCHITECTURE THIS CAN BE REPRESENTED AS A FRAMEWORK TO A FORM. THE FRAMEWORK USED IN THE SPORT AND CULTURE CENTER WAS INSPIRED BY THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE MOVEMENTS OF THE HUMAN BODY DURING BOTH SPORT AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS RUNNING AND DANCE.

FREDERICKSBERG, DENMARK SPRING 2011 // KELLY NELSON

BY BREAKING FROM THE SURROUNDING GRID, OFFERING NEW FORMS, AND EXTENDING THE SITE INTO THE EXISTING STREETS, THE PROJECT BECOMES AN ENGAGING NEW CENTER FOR THE IMMEDIATE AREA. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY IN PROGRAMMING, THERE ARE NO PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES ON THE MAIN FLOOR. INSTEAD, DIFFERENT “POCKETS” OF SPACE ARE DEFINED BY THE CEILING. USERS ARE THEREFORE FREE TO MOVE ABOUT AND INTERACT IN THE MANNER OF THEIR OWN CHOOSING. THE HEIGHT OF THE CONCRETE BEAMS RESPONDS TO THE ACTIVITY TAKING PLACE BELOW.

IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING STRUCTURE AND DEFINING SPACE, A SERIES OF PRECAST RIBS COMBINE THE BUILDING’S LIGHTING, HEATING, COOLING, AND VENTILATION SYSTEMS INTO A SINGLE ELEMENT. RECESSED LIGHTING ALLOWS THE INTERIOR AESTHETIC TO REMAIN UNOBSTRUCTED BY DUCTWORK OR LIGHT FIXTURES. THE THERMAL MASS OF THE CONCRETE CAN BE USED IN A NUMBER OF PASSIVE STRATEGIES TO MAINTAIN AN EVEN INTERIOR ENVIRONMENT THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND REDUCE THE BUILDING’S ENERGY DEMANDS. DEPENDING ON THE SEASON, SUPPLY AIR COULD BE EITHER PREHEATED OR PRE-COOLED BEFORE ENTERING THE BUILDING. A CLOSED SYSTEM OF GEOTHERMAL WATER PIPES COULD ALSO BE CAST INTO THE RIBS TO CONDITION THE BUILDING.

(re: BLACK HOLES) THE INVISIBLE, UNDERLYING CONCEPTS UPON WHICH EXPRESSIONS ARE BASED, BUT NEVER EXIST IN A SINGULAR FORM. OFTEN WE SEE THE EFFECTS OF AN EVENT OR PROCESS BUT NOT THE EVENT ITSELF. WE KNOW CERTAIN THINGS EXIST BECAUSE OF CLUES FROM WHAT SURROUNDS THEM OR WHAT IS LEFT BEHIND AFTER AN ACTION TAKES PLACE.

TENSILE STRUCTURE PART OF A LARGER INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT, THIS STRUCTURE WAS DEVELOPED AS AN INSTALLATION FOR THE SALES AND LEASING OFFICE AT GREENSTONE HOMES’ KENDALL YARDS - A 78 ACRE MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT ALONG THE SPOKANE RIVER. PART OF THE INTERIOR DESIGN INTENT WAS A STRUCTURE TO LOWER THE CEILING HEIGHT ABOVE A SMALL SEATING AREA WHILE MAINTAINING A LIGHT AND OPEN FEEL. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, THE SIZES OF THE STRUCTURAL MEMBERS WERE MINIMIZED BY SUBJECTING THEM TO EITHER PURE TENSION OR PURE COMPRESSION.

SPOKANE, WASHINGTON SUMMER 2012 A PHYSICAL MODEL WAS DEVELOPED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE FORCES ACTING UPON THE STRUCTURE. IT IS BOTH AN ARCHITECTURAL AND STRUCTURAL EXPRESSION OF DYNAMIC STABILITY - APPEARING TO EXPLODE OUTWARD WHILE REMAINING STATIC - AND PRESERVING ITS SHAPE AS LONG AS NO ADDITIONAL LOADS ARE INTRODUCED. THE “FLOATING” MIDDLE LEVEL RESISTS GRAVITY ONLY BY THE TENSION IN THE CABLES. AT FULL SCALE, EACH MODULE WOULD BE TENSIONED WITH TURNBUCKLES. SPACING BETWEEN LEVELS IS MAINTAINED BY THE TWO VERTICAL COMPRESSION MEMBERS. THE CENTRAL COMPRESSION MEMBER WAS DESIGNED AS A RECYCLED SECTION OF RAILROAD TRACK, A NOD TO KENDALL YARDS’ HISTORY AS A RAIL YARD.

OBJECTIVE

, THESE THINGS

(re: OBJECTIVE MEMORY) A PHYSICAL REPRESENTATION OF A MEMORY WITHOUT HAVING TO EXPERIENCE THE EVENT YOURSELF. ALLOWS AN INFINITE NUMBER OF POSSIBLE EVENTS WHICH COULD BE IMAGINED TO HAVE CREATED IT.

RIVER CROSSING STATION THE RIVER CROSSING STATION WOULD BECOME ONE OF THE “NODES” OF CHICAGO’S BLOOMINGDALE (606) TRAIL, PROVIDING NEW RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES, AND ENCOURAGING CHICAGOANS TO ENGAGE WITH A PREVIOUSLY ABUSED AND NEGLECTED RIVER. AS MUCH OF THE SITE AS POSSIBLE IS GIVEN TO NEW PUBLIC SPACE BY SEPARATING THE PROGRAM INTO SMALLER STRUCTURES SPREAD ACROSS THE SITE. BY DOING SO, THE SPACES IN BETWEEN BUILDINGS BECOME EQUALLY, IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE BUILDINGS THEMSELVES.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SPRING 2013 // BRENT NORSMAN

THE MAIN PLAZA ESPECIALLY SERVES MANY IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS FOR THE SITE. A GOAL OF THE PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN TO THE STANDARDS OF THE LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE. THUS, ALL ENERGY MUST COME FROM RENEWABLE ON-SITE RESOURCES, AND RAINWATER MUST BE COLLECTED AND TREATED OR REUSED. PASSIVE HOUSE-INSPIRED DETAILS AND BUILDING CONSTRUCTION WERE IMPLEMENTED TO FIRST REDUCE ENERGY DEMAND TO A LEVEL WHERE APPROACHING NET-ZERO ENERGY COULD BE POSSIBLE IN A CHALLENGING CHICAGO CLIMATE.

THE SITE ITSELF INTEGRATES STRATEGIES FOR WATER COLLECTION AND PRE-CONDITIONING INTAKE AIR. ENERGY NEEDS ARE SUPPLIED BY PHOTOVOLTAIC AND SOLAR-THERMAL ARRAYS. THE APPROACH TO MECHANICAL SYSTEMS IS DRIVEN BY THE LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE’S NET ZERO REQUIREMENTS FOR BOTH ENERGY AND WATER. STRATEGIES FOR COMBINING THE SYSTEM OF EARTH TUBES WITH AN ENERGY RECOVERY VENTILATOR WERE EXPLORED, BUT REMAINS A CONCEPT TO BE FURTHER STUDIED. FOR BUILDINGS WITH MINIMAL CONDITIONING

REQUIREMENTS OR HEATING ONLY (BIKE STORAGE, EXHIBITION), THE EARTH TUBES WOULD PRE-HEAT FRESH AIR DURING THE WINTER MONTHS WITH CONSISTENT GROUND TEMPERATURES. FOR SPACES WHICH ALSO REQUIRE COOLING (LAB, CAFE), FRESH AIR WOULD BE BROUGHT IN PRE-COOLED FROM THE EARTH TUBES AS WELL AS BLOWN ACROSS THE CONDENSER COILS OF AIR-COOLED CHILLERS TO REDUCE THE ENERGY REQUIRED FOR THIS SYSTEM.

THE PASSIVHAUS STANDARD INFORMED WINDOWWALL RATIOS FOR EACH FACADE. THE MINIMALLY CONDITIONED BOATHOUSE AND EXHIBITION HALL USE FIXED LOUVERS ON THEIR WEST-FACING FACADES TO BLOCK HARSH SUN ANGLES AND HELP REDUCE OVERHEATING FROM SOLAR GAIN. THE SPACING PROVIDES SHADING WHILE MAINTAINING VIEWS IN AND OUT. DETAILS TO REDUCE ENERGY DEMAND WERE INSPIRED BY THE PASSIVE HOUSE STANDARD. THE GOAL OF THESE DETAILS IS TO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THERMAL BRIDGING IN THE BUILDING ENVELOPE.

THE ANGULAR GRID USED FOR THE SITE WAS DEVELOPED THROUGH A PROCESS WHICH REINTERPRETS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHICAGO RIVER CORRIDOR GRID. IT REINTRODUCES THE ORGANIC TO AN UNNATURAL RIVER BY PROJECTING LINES AND CORRESPONDING PERPENDICULARS FROM EXISTING BOUNDARIES. THE PROCESS IS REPEATED USING THE NEWLY CREATED LINES AS THEY ARE ESTABLISHED. A NATURAL SELECTION OCCURS – NOT ALL LINES SURVIVE. THE BUILDINGS ORIENT THEMSELVES ALONG THE “ORGANIC” GRID. THE VISITOR MAY CONSTRUCT AN INFINITE NUMBER OF UNIQUE EXPERIENCES.

BOTH THE SITE AND THE BUILDINGS REVEAL A SERIES OF PARTIALLY EXCAVATED LAYERS, SUGGESTING A CONTINUOUS PROCESS. OVER TIME, VISITORS TO THE SITE WILL ADD ADDITIONAL LAYERS THROUGH THE TRACES OF THEIR ACTIONS. (re: TRACES) “IT DOES NOT SIMULATE THE REAL, BUT REPRESENTS AND RECORDS THE ACTION INHERENT IN A FORMER OR FUTURE REALITY...IT DETERMINES ARCHITECTURAL OBJECTS WHICH ARE ONLY POSSIBLE OCCURRENCES AMONG MANY, MOMENTS IN A CONTINUOUS PROCESS OF TRANSFORMATION.” -PETER EISENMAN
