P
aris is full of history, culture and romance. On a recent family trip, we visited a number of beautiful sites that I highly recommend. The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. It was commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon and finished many years later. The Arc became a rallying point for French troops parading after military victories and also serves as the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Champs-Elysees is a beautiful promenade bordered by many Shops, cinemas, cafes and gardens. Parisians celebrate New Year’s Eve in this popular walkway. The beautiful Seine River goes through Paris and ends in the English Channel. A stroll by the bank of the Seine will allow you to see many of the beautiful bridges that span the river as well as many riverboats that navigate this famous waterway. The Place de la Concorde is the largest square in Paris. Located at one end of the Champs-Elysees, it became the place where many met the guillotine during the French Revolution. Notre Dame de Paris, also know as Notre Dame Cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in Europe. The Sacre-Coeur Basilica is one of Paris’s major tourist draws. This great Basilica is located on top of the Montmartre hill and overlooks the entire area. The Pantheon, originally built as a church now serves as the resting place for many prominent French citizens and a meetinghouse dedicated to the great intellectuals of France. The Eiffel Tower is Paris’s most famous landmark. It is a must see on your first visit to Paris. It was built in 1889 for the World Exhibition in celebration of the French Revolution. I also recommend that you dine at a French restaurant and have a taste of the wonderful French food.

t starts around the new moon in August. Massive goliath groupers mass together around several wrecks off Jupiter Inlet to spawn and the result is amazing dive trips. This year my September trips to Alaska were canceled due to Covid 19 so I finally had the chance to see the goliath spawn in person. Evidently the females move onto the wrecks and the smaller males follow. Also in attendance are thousands of cigar minnows and small jacks, all hoping to gobble up the eggs as soon as they are laid. The actual spawn happens in the evenings and is rarely witnesses by divers. Nevertheless on my last dive in the afternoon of the last of the 4 days that I went with Jupiter Dive Center, I actually watched a goliath drop her eggs. I was on a site known as Warrior Reef which consists of a bunch of pillars. Current is always a problem on these wrecks and once you pass a point, you’re not likely to be able to get back to it without burning half a tank of air. I had found myself a pilar with a huge goliath hovering next to it. I crept up and grabbed onto the pilar and surprisingly the goliath never moved, allowing me to take all the photos I wanted. I stayed next to this critter for probably 10 minutes when I made out a large shadowy blob moving towards us. Visibility was only around 40 feet but, as it came closer, I realized that it was a big goliath with hundreds of lit up yellow jacks and cigar minnows hovering around it. That goliath had to be dropping eggs to create the feeding frenzy around it. I snapped a bunch of photos and as the dust cleared I saw another goliath following the same path, probably fertilizing what was left of the eggs….what an amazing sight

The goliath spawn dive trips are actually pretty tough. Jupiter Dive Center has been running them for years and they are all drift dives on Nitrox. The boat will put you in position up current of the wreck and the dive master will lead everyone down. It’s very important to follow the dive master to the wreck. If you come in wide the current will sweep you right by the wreck and you’ll have no choice but to surface and get back on the boat to be dumped again. Once you get near the wreck, it’s not difficult to spot the goliaths. Sometimes there will be over 50 on one wreck, all willing to pose for photos. It’s a great experience, but the goliaths disburse around mid September. I’ll definitely be back next year.

I
n the past 30 years I traveled all over the world in a quest for great fishing adventures. Many times, I have been asked which has been my favorite fishing destination. I actually have had great experiences from many different parts of the world. My visits to the Amazon basin have been memorable. I have visited Brazil, Suriname, Guyana and Colombia. Entering the Amazon jungle has always been a wonderful and mysterious experience. I have learned so much about the culture, the food, the ways of life, the great quest for exotic fish and the different ways to catch them. The pandemic has put a complete stop to my travels so I decided to share with you some of the great experiences I have had in the Amazon over the years in a photo essay.

Corona Virus Questions and Answers
By Dr. Martin Aróstegui
What is the status of Corona Virus infections around the world? As of thesecond week in October there have been 37.3 million cases and 1.0 million deaths. The total cases per day are above 300,000 and deaths are above 5,500 per day. Both numbers are increasing. Many countries are seeing a resurgence of the virus. What is the status of the Corona Virus in the United States? As of the second week in October there have been 7.7 million cases and more than 214,000 deaths. The total cases per day are above 48,000 and deaths are above 700 per day. Many states are seeing increases in cases and 20 states are seeing increases in the number of deaths from the virus. Many states in the middle of the country are seeing large increases in the number of cases. Many experts are very concerned that this may be the beginning of another surge of covid19. 146 SOL & MAR MAGAZINE
What is the status of Corona Virus infections in colleges and universities? There have been more than178,000 cases among students and employees in the US since the pandemic started. Many schools have had to close the campus and change to on line education. Getting young people to wear masks and practice social distancing has been a very difficult task for most schools that have reopened. I hear that the virus may surge in the fall and winter seasons. Is this correct? Many medical experts are very concerned that there will be a resurgence of viral illnesses this fall and winter. They worry that when it gets very cold and people stay inside most of the time the virus will have an easier time infecting more people. What are the best ways to avoid getting infected with Corona Virus? We now know that the virus is spread through very fine droplets of moisture called aerosols. These droplets are produced when infected people talk, sneeze or cough and they can linger in the air and travel with air currents. These droplets can carry thousands of viral particles. The best way to prevent transmitting or contracting the virus is as follows: 1. Wear a mask in indoors situations and when social distancing is not possible. I recommend that you obtain the best possible mask you can find. 2. Practice social distancing. Stay more than six feet away from everyone SOL & MAR MAGAZINE
147
and further away whenever possible. 3. Avoid visiting crowded places in both indoors and outdoors situations. Indoors is riskier than outdoors. When are we likely to get a vaccine for covid19? There are many vaccines being tested for effectiveness and safety. This process takes time and can only be rushed so much. Currently, many companies around the world are working on this project. The medical experts predict that one or more vaccines may be ready for approval by the end of the year. Once a vaccine is approved, it will take many months before everyone has a chance to get vaccinated. It may take as much as 9 months before everyone that wants a vaccine can get it. Vaccines for children may take even longer because they need to be tested in children before widespread distribution.

SOL & MAR MAGAZINE
