El Dr. Aróstegui es también un profesional, especializado en la fotografía de pesca y la naturaleza. Aeropuerto Intern Hay muchos datos interesantes que merecen ser mencionados acerca del Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami. Interview by Pedro Díaz President and Publisher of Sol y Mar Magazine Jenny Cuevas, a successful entrepreneur woman in the cigar business in South Florida. Born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, immigrated very young to Miami in the 1980’s. For the past 6 years she began the importation and distribution of cigars her father Sergio Cuevas makes at his cigar factory Cuevas & Hermanos Cia in Santiago, Dominican Republic since the early 1980’s. Jenny Cuevas is proud to run a business in which men traditionally dominate the industry. We have our own lands in the Dominican Republic, in which my father grows and produces tobacco in his own factory. We make any type of Private Label Cigars and Custom made cigars. From the label, box, design, everything the customer wants. We are currently working in customizing many cigar shops in the United States. Creating their own house blend. Although our main business is wholesale, we also started selling retail recently. We have all the exclusivity of distribution in the United States. My father from Dominican Republic on the other hand is currently doing business in Europe with Germany,
Switzerland, and Spain. The name of our own private label cigar is called CABO ROJO and DON MANDINA available in Corona, Toro, Robusto and Churchill in Connecticut Natural, Corojo and Maduro Wrapper in boxes and as well as in bundles. All the cigars we produce are made by hand, from the beginning of sowing the seed and harvesting, to their elaboration. Our cigars are made with mainly Cuban seed tobacco, which we also mix with tobacco from Nicaragua, Honduras, Colombia and Brazil to make the different combinations and blends. Tabacalera Cuevas & Hermanos produces top quality Cuban seed cigars and is located in Villa Gonzalez, Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. What is your direct market, efforts and what innovations are you making to increase and expand your sales?
“Now we are increasing sales both domestic, internationally as well as locally supported by new distributors to increase our production in the Dominican Republic”, says Jenny. “We are also working with different companies and businesses in supporting their events, in which we take a cigar roller for attendees to see how a cigar is made from start to finish. It is a very detailed and thorough process. There are people who have no idea of the complex process of elaboration. From the beginning when the seed is planted in the ground, until it reaches a customer’s hands, the cigars have passed through almost 35 hands”. Of her hopes and aspirations, Jenny Cuevas confesses the secret of her success: I intend to keep moving forward with the legacy of my family. I thank God that he has made the sun rise once again upon us. One must have passion, perseverance in what one does and not be intimidated by the circumstances. That’s what makes

En el artículo anterior te explicamos algunos factores que facilitan nadar bajo el agua. Aquí te ofrecemos otras recomendaciones y soluciones para la práctica del buceo deportivo.
Cinturón de Plomos El cinturón de plomos es la solución al problema de la flotabilidad. La última pieza en ponerse y la primera en quitarse. Pero esté seguro de ajustárselo bien y que los pesos estén balanceados cerca de la parte delantera del mismo. Además, no debe ser muy largo. Si sobresale de la hebilla más de ocho pulgadas, córtele y quémele la punta (si es de nylon) para evitar que se abra. ¿Cuánto debe pesar el cinturón? Cada buzo debe experimentarlo por sí mismo. Normalmente usted necesita de 10 a 20 libras de peso para flotar en forma natural. Póngase todo el equipo que usará para bucear. Métase en el agua y comience a añadir o suprimir pesos hasta que se hunda suavemente. Recuerde poner de dos a cinco libras de plomos cuando entra en el agua salada, ya que flota en mayor medida en agua salada que en la dulce. Los pesos son de acuerdo a las necesidades personales y cambian a menudo con la edad, las condiciones del traje isotérmico, el cuerpo, experiencia y equipo. Por otra parte, tenga presente que la comida que usted ha ingerido antes de bucear aún tiene su efecto. Generalmente se flota más después de comer ya que los gases están presentes en su estomago e intestinos. (Continuará en la próxima edición).

Chilean Patagonia – Puma lodge, Yelcho Watershead By Pat Ford (Part One) In his prime, Billy Pate spent most of January and February every year in Chile. He raved about the trout fishing and repeatedly told me that I had to get down there to fish with him. I just never found the time. Fast forwarding a decade or two, Steve Selway invited soon to be 87 years
old Bill Curtis and I down to his Lodge in the Yelcho Watershed for the first week in December. Steve was raised in Dillon Montana, spent a dozen years on the rodeo circuit, eventually entering veterinary school at Washington State. During his career, Steve developed some unique arthroscopic surgical procedures for dealing with bone and cartilage da-mage to race horses which made him a hot commodity in the worldwide racing community. He first visited Chile some 25 years ago checking out horses and immediately fell in love with its majestic beauty and fantastic fishing. In 1997 he became a partner in the Puma I, a mothership operating on Lake Yelcho, and a year later they began work on
the Lodge which is located on the Rio Yelcho, about half way between the lake and the Pacific Ocean. He became sole owner in 2007 and in 2009 christened the Puma II, a state of the art, custom 60’ mother ship. From these two bases his anglers can fish a number of rivers, lakes and estuaries for not only rainbows and browns but also Atlantic salmon, king salmon and trophy brook trout. Bill and I met Steve, Fran Surprenant and Pablo Rojas (the other two-thirds of his surgical team) at the Miami airport for the flight to Santiago. From Santiago we took a 90 minute flight south to Puerto Montt and then a small commercial flight to what used to be the town of Chaiten. The airport is actually in Santa Barbara because Chaiten was destroyed by a volcano eruption in May of 2008 (google ‘Chaiten volcano’). Bill and I spent a week with Steve both on the Puma II and at the Lodge and when we left; Steve said that ours was the worst week of fishing that he’d experienced in his 25 years in Chile. He wanted us to come back in January or at least January of 2012 and I could tell that he was truly upset. Evidently spring was late this year and the cold water and goofy weather shut down the hatches and the bite both on the lake and in the river. We had three days of bad weather, two days of
sunshine and then 3 days of horrendous pouring rain and 30 Knot winds. The good news is that I was able to sample bits and pieces of this amazing fishery, just enough to know that I had to return. Here’s how our trip went. Lodge manager and head guide, Patricio Soto Ocampo met us at the airport and took us directly to the Puma II. The Puma II holds six anglers and there is plenty of room, good beds and lots of great food. Chef Louis does not know the meaning of ‘moderation’. For our first meal, he brought out what looked like a half pound of Abalone over lettuce. I thought it was great and was about to clean my plate when Fran advised me to hold back a bit – this was only the appetizer. So much for losing weight. The food and wine were off the charts. Puma’s season runs from around Thanksgiving through mid-April with the best dry fly fishing for rainbows and browns from midDecember through late February. King salmon show up in mid-February through April and atlantic salmon can be caught at the south end on Lake Yelcho most any time and in the Rio Blanco estuary in
March and April. Steelhead pretty much follows the salmon run in March. The Lodge record rainbow of 26 lbs was caught during our week the prior year. Actually what is really incredible is that everything in the lake seems to be over 5 lbs. The most effective fly tackle is a 7 or 8 weight outfit. One is rigged with a 200 or 300 sink tip line such as Cortland’s Precision Quick Descent and the other with a standard ‘big fly’ floating line. On the river there are Montana style hatches where a 5 or 6 weight will do, but on the lake the prime floating meal is a huge dragonfly and its imitations are very difficult to cast on the lighter rods. The lake fishing is controlled by weather high winds, rain and cold shut off the dry fly fishing, hence the need for the sinking line. The prime objective is the dry fly action with the back-up being dredging streamers and nymphs along shorelines, bars and weed beds. The Puma II was docked at the north end of the Lake near the out-flow into the Rio Yelcho so that’s where we chose to start. Steve had told me that the most effective dredge
flies were brown, black or olive wooleybuggers with lots of rubber legs. He was right, but I also had great success with a #6 stonebugger, until it was chewed up beyond recognition. This first morning we were going to be dredging and there was just a touch of current so I quickly fell into a routine of cast-swing-slow strip. The water was very clear and if anything, the 200 grain line was just a bit too heavy in the shallower spots. It wasn’t long before I felt a slight tap and a 20 inch rainbow took to the air. Probably a half hour went by before the next strike, but this one had some weight behind it. This was a really good fish but it wouldn’t jump a sign of a really, really good fish. It wasn’t too long before we got our first look and she was a beauty. Guide Ronnie Hillman could only get the first third into the landing net but it was enough. The rainbow was well over 30 inches and somewhere between 15 and 20 pounds. Unfortunately the rest of the day was pretty slow very few fish but the ones we caught were all around four or five pounds.
The next morning the Puma II chugged down to the south end of the lake and nestled into a sheltered cove which gave us easy access to the Futaleufu River’s flow into the lake. The weather deteriorated over the next two days but we still caught a few rainbows and browns on both dry flies and wooleybuggers. It seemed that every fish we caught was over 20 inches; there just weren’t a lot of them. An average day on Lake Yelcho usually produces 20-30 trout per angler. On a really good day you could catch 50 regardless of the weather. We were working pretty hard to get ten. The afternoon of the second day at the South end, Bill and I elected to come in early while Steve a Patricio went back to practice his ‘dappling’ technique. “Coming in early” at Puma means we came back at 8pm instead of fishing till dark. It was a pretty goofy schedule: Breakfast at 8am, fishing from 9 to 3, lunch/siesta till 5pm, then back out till 9:30pm or so. I had just changed clothes and settled down with a rum and coke when Chef Louis stuck his head in and said grande pesca. I don’t know much Spanish but I got the message. Louis had been throwing some scrapes overboard after lunch and it had attracted some huge trout. We could see them swimming around below the Puma II so I figured I might as well give them a shot. I had one egg pattern in my fly box so I tied it on my Loop 7 weight and dropped it in. (Continue in the next issue)

Presidente y Editor de Sol y Mar Magazine El Dr. Martín Arostegui Finlay es bisnieto del insigne científico cubano Carlos J. Finlay, descubridor del vector causante de la fiebre amarilla: el mosquito (Aedes aegypti), que causó la muerte a miles de personas. El científico cubano Carlos J. Finlay descubrió este mosquito como agente trasmisor de la fiebre amarilla y presentó sus resultados por primera vez en la Conferencia Sanitaria Internacional, celebrada en Washington DC, el 18 de febrero de 1881. Sus declaraciones fueron objeto de burlas por parte de médicos estadounidenses, quienes luego trataron de exponer estos descubrimientos como desarrollados en su país.
¿Cómo recuerdas a tu bisabuelo el Dr. Carlos J. Finlay?, preguntamos al Dr. Martín Aróstegui Finlay: “No lo conocí personalmente –afirma Martín-, porque él murió antes que yo naciera. Todo lo que yo sé de él me lo contaron mis abuelos, especialmente por mi abuela que era la historiadora de la familia. A Finlay no sólo se le admira como un sabio, sino por su perseverancia, porque cuando él empezó a hacer sus estudios ofreció una conferencia en la academia de ciencias de
Estados Unidos de América para hablar sobre la relación del mosquito y la fiebre amarilla. Sus colegas se reían y burlaban de él, porque pensaban que estaba loco y le decían: “el doctor del mosquito”, porque no le creían su tesis que el mosquito fuese el trasmisor de la fiebre amarilla. Sin embargo, Finlay regresó a Cuba y continuó sus experimentos, profundizando en sus conocimientos sobre el mosquito Aedes aegypti, como trasmisor del virus de la fiebre amarilla.”
A sus colegas ¿Qué les hizo cambiar de parecer? “En esa época, mi bisabuelo estaba muy por delante de sus colegas científicos que no tenían el concepto de lo que él había descubierto. Por el contagio de la fiebre amarilla murieron miles de personas que trabajaban en el canal de Panamá, así como en Cuba donde fallecieron también muchos españoles por la fiebre amarrilla. Estados Unidos organizó una comisión sobre la fiebre amarilla, dirigida por Dr. Walter Reed, doctor de los cuerpos médicos del U.S. Army. Esta comisión no pudo encontrar el origen de esta enfermedad. Entonces viajaron a Cuba y hablaron con el Dr. Finlay. Uno de los miembros de esa comisión se brindó como voluntario y dejó que un mosquito lo picara. Ese mosquito con anterioridad había picado a una persona que había muerto de fiebre amarilla, y por supuesto este voluntario también murió, lo cual confirmó que Finlay tenía razón: el vector trasmisor de la fiebre amarilla era el mosquito Aedes aegypti. A partir de ese momento mi bisabuelo Finlay empezó a tener el reconocimiento internacional sobre
su trabajo científico. Hubo una controversia entre si el Dr. Finlay debía ser el que recibía el crédito o el jefe de la comisión internacional estadounidense. Por esa controversia el Dr. Finlay no recibió el Premio Nobel de Medicina, aunque fue nominado nueve veces. Sobre la fiebre amarilla ningún científico recibió ese premio. Cuando estuve en el canal de Panamá, visité el museo que hay en Miraflores sobre la construcción del canal, en el cual vi una sección dedicada completamente al Dr. Finlay. Sin sus descubrimientos de la fiebre amarilla, no se hubiera podido haber construido el canal de Panamá, porque cada mes morían cientos de trabajadores.”
¿Cómo te sientes de ser el bisnieto del Dr. Carlos J. Finlay? “Toda nuestra familia está muy orgullosa de ser descendientes de una lumbrera de esa calidad humana que tenía el Dr. Finlay. Mi abuela influyó mucho en mí, porque ella quería que yo estudiara medicina y descubriera el cáncer. Desde que empecé a pensar, yo siempre quise ser médico.”
¿Posees algún artículo personal o reliquia histórica que haya pertenecido a tu bisabuelo el Dr. Finlay? “Cuando llegamos a Miami provenientes de Cuba en noviembre de 1960 todas las cosas que teníamos de mi bisabuelo se quedaron allá y se perdieron.” El mosquito de la fiebre amarilla (Aedes aegypti) es un mosquito culícido, portador del virus del dengue y la fiebre amarilla, así como de otras enfermedades, perteneciente al subgénero Stegomyia dentro del género Aedes (al que pertenece el Aedes albopictus vector también del Dengue).
Carlos J. Finlay Barrés nació en Puerto Príncipe (Camaguey) en 1833 y falleció el 20 de agosto de 1915. Por sus méritos recibió medallas y honores de muchos países como uno de los grandes benefactores de la humanidad.

As a facet of a holiday vacation in the Florida Keys that wrapped up Sunday, former President Jimmy Carter fished offshore of Marathon. Captain Rich Tudor with the Saltwater Experience out of Hawk’s Cay Resort & Marina, guided the small group to shallow patch reefs on the ocean side a few miles offshore, fishing light tackle and using pilchards and shrimp for bait.”We found an incredibly good bite of Spanish mackerel in about 15 feet of water and lots of action with snapper,” said Tudor. “The President is an impressively agile angler, and for someone who’s fished all over the world, he said this was one of the best fishing days he’s ever had.” The group caught more than 70 fish, including 12 different species, and brought home about 15 snapper and Spanish mackerel for dinner, Tudor said. Prior to this visit, Carter was in the Keys with wife Ro-
salynn and a number of family members as part of a trip that also included an opportunity to interact with dolphins at Hawk’s Cay and help release a loggerhead sea turtle that had convalesced at The Turtle Hospital in Marathon. The vacation in the Keys is not the first for Carter and his family. In 1996, the family had New Year’s Eve dinner at the Harry S. Truman Little White House in Key West and returned there for a visit in December 2007 during a cruise ship stopover.
