lamingo used to be the gateway to the best redfish and snook flats in the world, but it’s changing fast. I used to fish Flamingo on a regular basis for redfish, snook and tarpon. My favorite area was Snake Bight’s pole and troll zone. The water was usually crystal clear over lush grass beds. Recently the water east of Flamingo has been declining for any number of reasons decreased fresh water flow, algae blooms, dying grass beds, just to name a few of the more popular causes. Whatever the cause that area id pretty much a bowl of mud now water the color of chocolate milk, dead grass and no fish. Capt Richard Black summed it up when he told me that my days of taking underwater photos of redfish were over. The area of dead water seems to be expanding and even the areas that still hold fish are still more turbid than they ever were before. If this pattern continues this once rich fishery will be destroyed forever and the photos I’ve taken over the years will be in a museum somewhere in a gallery titled “The Way it Used to Be”.

THE QUEST FOR THE CAPTURE OF A SPEARFISH ON FLY TACKLE By Dr. Martín Aróstegui
60
SOL & MAR MAGAZINE
few years ago, two of my fly-fishing friends started talking about attempting to complete the International Game Fish Association’s Billfish Royal Slam on fly tackle. The Royal Slam in a prestigious award that is given to those anglers that are able to catch all the billfish of the world. So far a number of anglers have completed the Slam using conventional tackle with bait, but no angler has been able to complete this feat using fly fishing equipment. I had been fishing for billfish on fly for many years and was lucky enough to catch a number of different species. After reviewing my catches, I decided that I also had a chance to accomplish this feat. One of the billfish I was missing was the elusive short bill spearfish. This fish is extremely rare and can only be found in waters of the Pacific Ocean for short periods of time during the months of February and March.

I soon decided that this was my next target in this very difficult quest and contacted an expert guide with a reputation for finding these fish in Kona Hawaii. Kevin Nakamaru is indeed a great guide with extensive experience in fishing for all billfish in Hawaiian waters. We organized to go on our fishing quest for the spearfish in Kona Hawaii during the month of March. Just as we arrived, the weather turned ugly and we had to attempt fishing in very rough seas. For two days we fished in rough waters without success. The third day turned out to be very nice and we were hoping that our luck would change. At mid day, Kevin’s mates jumped on the deck and started teasing the fish that had appeared behind the teasers into casting range. I made my fly cast and moved the fly in order to attract the fish. Suddenly the fish turned towards the fly and attacked it aggressively. I set the hook and the fight started. The spearfish jumped multiple times and my wife Roberta who was the official cameraperson was able to capture the struggle with multiple photos. After the capture, we released the spearfish alive and unharmed so that it could fight another day. I think that my readers already know that I am a strong conservationist and release most of my fish alive. I hope to continue my quest very soon and will keep all of you informed on my progress. To complete the Billfish Royal Slam, an angler must catch the following billfish. Atlantic Sailfish, Pacific Sailfish, Atlantic Blue Marlin, Pacific Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Spearfish, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin and Swordfish.

LA CAPTURA DE UN SPEARFISH (AGUJA DEL PACร FICO) CON EQUIPO DE MOSCA
Por el Dr. Martin Arรณstegui
72
SOL & MAR MAGAZINE

number of years ago, my friend Pat Ford sent me a photo of a strange, prehistoric looking fish that our friend Larry Dahlberg caught while fishing in the Kabalebo River in the country of Suriname. On short notice I was arranging a trip to fish for these river monsters. My adventure took me to the Kabalebo Nature Resort, where I quickly became friends with the owner Mr. Karel Dawson. Over the years, I got to fish in this wonderful and secluded river, deep in the rainforests of this South American Country with my son Martini. This place is so remote that we got to see many wild animals that most people only dream of. One of the highlights of visiting Suriname was our trip to the market in the capital city of Paramaribo. The aromas of strange spices as well as the sight of many things I never imagined were edible always fascinate me. I feel lucky that my fishing adventures have taken me to so many wonderful places to explore. The following is a photo essay of my adventures in the Kabalebo River and the markets of Suriname.

VENEZUELAS AMAZING GRACE STAGES SPECTACULAR COME FROM BEHIND VICTORY AT THE CASA DE CAMPO BLUE MARLIN CLASSIC 2017 By Rick Alvarez

ay one started out hot and heavy with a total of 29 blue marlin releases by the tournament fleet. At the end of the day it was Florida’s Fa La Me that took the daily with four blue marlin releases but was closely followed only one release behind by Emily, Team Supreme, Blue Bird and Mama Who each with three blues
released. That night participants were treated to fun filled St. Patrick’s Day Celebration hosted by Presidente Beer (their logo color happens to be Irish green) complete with Irish Jigs performed by green clad dancers, lots of beer and great music in traditional Irish style. Day two dawned very breezy and cool with the wind out of the Northeast and boats encountered rough seas with a current change that had taken place overnight. Only 14 blues were released that day, considered very slow by Casa de Campo customary standards. Fa La Me continued to hold on to the lead adding two more blues to their total with Mama Who adding 3 blues to their total and only a few points behind the leader. Top boat for the day and winning the Daily however was Auspicious, having had no releases on day one due to mechanical problems their four releases on day 2 put them in contention. The much needed Lay Day came the next day to recover from the rough second day. The traditional Sporting Clays competition was held that morning and in the afternoon the now infamous Donkey Polo match took place at the Equestrian Center with participants enjoying Emilio’s world class hot dogs along with adult beverages and soft drinks while they cheered on their favorite riders. On the third and final day the stage was set for an exciting finish between the two leaders with an additional three boats within striking distance. However, what ensued that day nobody expected. Amazing Grace released the fleet’s first blue of the day bringing their total for the tournament to 3 and Chaser released the fleet’s second a few minutes later brining the latter’s tournament total to 4, but those releases had no effect on the standings. The third blue of the day belonged to Fa La Me thus solidifying their place atop the leader board. And then at five minutes to 11:00AM Amazing Grace released another blue and proceeded to release four more in the span of two and a half hours bringing their total to six for the day. Chaser gave chase (pardon the
194
SOL & MAR MAGAZINE
pun) by releasing 3 more and when the dust settled at lines out Amazing Grace had lived up to their name having amazingly moved from ninth place to win the tournament one blue ahead of Fa La Me while Chaser had gone from seventh to finish in third. At the Awards Banquet that evening held in the Flamboyan Room of the elegant Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, Amazing Grace took the day 3 Daily, the Last Day Shootout, and first place in both Overall pools. Additionally they took home a fortune in luxury sponsor prizes and bragging rights for a whole year. Fa La Me finished Second and Chaser Third with their angler Garrett Penley as Top Individual Angler. Our thanks to the staff and management of Marina Casa de Campo and Casa de Campo Resort & Villas for their outstanding support and cooperation. Save the dates for 2018 when the ‘Reel March Madness’ Casa de Campo Blue Marlin Classic will be held from March 7th thru the 11th. Don’t Miss it!

TECHNOLOGY CONTROL HEAD OFFERS LONGEST SHIFTING LIFE Whether on a crabber fishing the Bering Sea or an express sedan island hopping in the Caribbean Sea, Twin Disc’s newest, commercial-grade EC300 Power Commander propulsion control system provides superior transmission and throttle handling. All single and twin lever control heads now feature contactless sensors for a long, reliable service life. On the forefront of marine technology, the EC300 has a magnetic, contactless Hall Effect sensor for monitoring lever position. It outlasts other electromechanical/potentiometer type sensors and provides the longest shifting service life available. In a test that involved over four million cycles, the EC300 did not have a single loss of lever position signal. With a Twin Disc Quickshift® transmission, it’s also more sensitive. Minute lever adjustments translate into instant transmission response. The first 25 degrees of lever travel provide slow-speed trolling; the following 30 degrees control engine RPMs. This is critical for maneuverability, whether pushing a tow or backing down on a marlin. www.twindisc.com

TECHNOLOGY LAKE MURRAY DOCK REBUILT WITH GOLDEN BOAT LIFTS Lake Murray is just west of Columbia, South Carolina. It offers the communities that dot its 500 miles of scenic shoreline a boating and fishing paradise. One of these, Cherokee Shores Home Owners Association, needed to replace its deteriorating floating dock. Its residents chose Rough Water Docks to install a permanent pier and 4-post lifts from industry leader Golden Boat Lifts. Rough Water Docks installed a mix of 7,500 and 10,000 lb. capacity 4-Post lifts. With piles that are barely 12” above the dock’s platform, the lifts’ low profile are perfect for the idyllic setting. Cherokee Shores didn’t have lifts before the renovation. As they put their boats in this spring, they’ll soon realize what Golden Boat Lift owners the world over know: storing a vessel out of the water keeps it clean and fast, and increases its resale value. The 4-Post lift is Golden Boat Lifts’ biggest seller. Warranties for 15 years, it’s manufactured in the USA of rugged, fully welded 6061 T6 marine-grade aluminum and the highest quality stainless steel. The company’s durable Sea-Drive® provides the muscle. It’s backed by a 10-year warranty, but in over 18,000 manufactured, not one has ever failed. www.goldenboatlifts.com

TECHNOLOGY PASSIONATE ADVENTURE DEFINES LUXURY TENDER There’s a sense of passionate adventure that comes with the yachting lifestyle. Argos Nautic’s 305 indulges this notion. It’s a compact, lightweight 11’ RIB tender that’s as much at home exploring a secluded cay in Exuma as it is Miami Beach. A 305 owner doesn’t have to search to find his boat among a sea of lookalike utilitarian tenders; it stands apart in a sea of sameness. Designed by Patrizio Facheris, its pedigreed Italian styling is a marriage of lithe form and opulent comfort. No detail has been overlooked—every component was chosen not out of convenience, but to expand and augment the overall design. The 305 is customizable to the point of being a bespoke vessel. Some opt to match the tender to its mothership, others gravitate towards the newest, trendiest palette of color and texture. Each is an exclusive, one-of-a-kind creation that reflects the individuality of its owner. Nothing of luxury is devoid of grace and the premium 305 is no exception. Its wellappointed interior is striking. Its teak and holly flooring are a counterpoint to the glossiness of its silky interior. The sumptuous seating and thoughtful design offer ample space for four. Hidden storage compartments abound, providing even more interior room. Even the LED lighting sets a mood that is unmistakably Argos Nautic.

TECHNOLOGY SUZUKI REPOWER LAUNCHES OWNER S EDGE PROGRAM Suzuki RePower by Mastry, a Yanmar Company, has launched Owner’s Edge. The membership program is an integrated initiative to provide superior service to its expanding customer base and market the benefits of repowering a boat. Owner’s Edge provides members with a generous Trade Allowance Program that’s based on engine age and hours. Additionally, it includes 24/7 access to a Mastry employee through its private hotline, exclusive discounts on products and services, and invitations to educational seminars and local instore events. There are eight Suzuki RePower Centers throughout the southeast, with more planned. Even well-maintained boats eventually begin to lose power as their engines age. A cost-effective alternative to replacing the vessel is to repower with high-output, lightweight, four-stroke Suzuki outboards. www.suzukirepower.com

TECHNOLOGY WATERMAKER OFFERS INSTALLATION FLEXIBILITY Even on large vessels, machinery spaces tend to be cramped and have reduced accessibility. Knowing this, FCI Watermakers offers its renowned high-efficiency Neptune+ Series in a convenient, modular configuration for a wide variety of flexible installations. It delivers 1,275–9,500 gallons of pure, fresh water every day. Refitting large framed or skid-mounted watermakers commonly requires cutting the deck—an enormous added expense. With FCI’s Neptune+ Modular, individual components are easily brought into the engine room through a door or hatch. Once inside, they can be installed wherever access needs and the space dictate. www.fciwatermakers.com
