Editor’s Letter Hmmmm, it’s been a funny few months weather-wise, hasn’t it? At least we’ve had glorious sunshine and fingers crossed for all those summer weddings coming up! This issue is really all about the dress. We’ve been out and about meeting all the local wedding dress shops, finding out who stocks which designers, so when it comes to looking for your perfect dress, you have a head start! We’re also still in love with the vintage scene, so much so that this issue’s moodboard is dedicated to showcasing some of Dorset’s finest vintage suppliers - your something old couldn’t be more taken care of. As always, we hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as we enjoy putting it together. There’s always room for more weddings to be featured so if you got married in Dorset and want to relive the memories in our pages, then drop us a line. You too could have your wedding in print!

Wedding Diary
Diary of a bride to be
By Charlotte Ng
Charlie’s planning diary...
I
guess I’ve been busy since last time, got the final big pieces booked and ready to go!
My four lovely bridesmaids and I went shopping in London for dresses which was fun but tiring. My bridesmaids come from Liverpool, Leeds and London so it was a one day trip round all the shops! Went to some shops which ended up being ridiculously over budget (£380 per dress!) but just had to remain strong and decline them even though they were beautiful. In the end, I ordered multi-way dresses online and did not even get one from the shops! It was good to rule them all out though, and we all had a really good weekend together. We have also got the suits ordered now for James. James already knew roughly what he wanted so it was relatively easy, just a case of going round the shops and seeing where the best deal was. Just need to get the guys together to go and get measured for the suits now. And decide on whether we want top hats....!! I’ve also booked some other essentials. After having my hair done by Saphire Styling at the Wedding Festival at Holton Lee earlier this year, I was so impressed I booked the same hairdresser to do my hair and my bridesmaids’ hair for the big day. Under recommendation, I also booked Tots and Tiaras for our childcare for the day to keep the kids entertained; give the parents a chance to relax!
We had our registrar appointment too which was amusing. We had to answer some basic questions about each other, and James failed to remember my birthday! Hahaha! Luckily, the registrar did not seem worried about us being a sham marriage. I am super excited about our wedding cake. Our baker provided us with some samples and they were delicious! Apparently I am to expect more samples too. Excellent. The thing that is perhaps not going to plan is my supposed wedding diet. As do most brides, I would like to lose a few pounds for the big day – they’ve even got it in my notes for my wedding dress! I’ve given up crisps (mostly) and I am going to the gym but I HATE dieting. I love food too much. Especially desserts. Oh dear.

It’s our 5th birthday Getting married is one of the most exciting times of a girls life, and so looking for the perfect dress should be an enjoyable and exciting time. Everyones ideas on weddings are different, so whether it’s a big tulle princess dress or a sophisticated slimline lace gown, we are sure to have something to suit you. We have a large selection of dresses in at any one time, and we understand that not everyone can afford to spend thousands of pounds on their wedding dress, and that’s why we have dresses priced from £250 on our “off the peg” rail. Most of these dresses are ex-sample dresses which have been used for fashion shows and photoshoots direct from our designers. We also stock dresses that come from bridal shops all over the country, which means we really do have a large variety of dresses from many designers, usually about 125 dresses! We also stock a selection of dresses from True Bride, White Rose Bridal, Verise, and Rosa Couture. We can also match up your dress with accessories, including tiaras, veils and shoes, as well as the bridesmaids.

If you’ve been reading previous issues of Something Borrowed, you’ll know everything up to our wedding day. If not, here’s a quick recap. Mat & I met at our mutual friend’s wedding in April 2010 and were engaged on 10th May 2012. We had a very clear idea of how we wanted our wedding to be and so began working towards the big day. The day before the wedding, we gathered the troops to help set up inside the marquee. We arrived at my parents’ house in the morning with Mat’s van and were
greeted with the piles and piles of stuff that we’d been collecting over the past year. After loading up we headed over to Sopley Lake. The heavens opened up and the wind started. At one point, we really thought the marquee might take off. It took a few hours to set up the tables and decorate the marquee but just after 5pm, we left hoping it would all still be in place the next day! Mat stayed with his best man the night before the wedding and I stayed with my family at The Fisherman’s Haunt. We had a lovely meal and then all had an early night in preparation for the big day.
On Saturday 25th May we awoke to lovely sunshine (phew!) and started with a cooked breakfast. At 9am, Sally from Blushing Brides arrived to start the hair and make-up for me and my two sisters, the bridesmaids. At 9:30am, Hannah from Chrysalis arrived to do our nails. We all got ready in one room and it was really relaxing. Teri and Dave from Murakami Photography arrived at 11am to take some photos of us getting ready. It was all so laid back that I didn’t realise that it was already 12:55pm and our ceremony was at 1pm so as soon as I had put my gorgeous dress on, from Courtyard Bridal, we were off. The ceremony went without a hitch and the prayer for Mat’s mum, who is buried in the church grounds, was beautiful. Our friends, Paul & Alys videoed from the ceremony onwards. The vicar, choir and organist all knew Mat’s mum so it was nice to have them be a part of our day. After we exited the church to the Match of the Day theme tune, Mat and myself, along with his family, laid freesias on her grave and then followed everyone to Sopley Lake. As the guests arrived, Half Eight - a barbershop quartet - were at the lake to greet guests by singing to them. Polly from Blue Bay Events had also organised for guests to be served with Pimm’s, cold beer and pink lemonade. While they were waiting for us to arrive, people entertained themselves with games and activities we’d set-up. We had everything from a bouncy castle to a coconut shy, much of which we’d borrowed from the local scouts. After we arrived, we sat down in the marquee for the speeches and then a lovely
afternoon tea. I had purchased everything from teapots to cutlery and my lovely friend, Sadie, had made the scones and bought the jam and cream. I ordered sandwich platters from Sainsbury’s and my sister and friends (Sam from Corfe Cakes & Bakes and Coral from Rex’s Heavenly Cupcakes) made the cakes. It was all delicious! I had organised for Paul Newton, a close-up magician to attend. We know Paul well and Mat is always in awe of his tricks and of course, he didn’t disappoint!

After the afternoon tea it was back to the games and just generally relaxing. We had hay bales and picnic benches dotted around so those wanting to soak up the sun could do so. It was all really informal, just how we wanted it. One of the highlights for Mat was having a penalty shoot-out competition. He’s still a bit disappointed that he didn’t win. My family had booked Chilly White Ice Cream Tricycle as a surprise and I had booked a candy floss machine so along with my own sweet cart we certainly had enough sugar to get everyone pumped up ready for the evening! At 8pm we cut our lovely wedding cake, made by our family friend, Vera and then did our first dance. This had also remained a surprise to everyone except the DJ, Friscos Discos and our friend Stacey, who had helped us choreograph it. The dance started off to Ellie Goulding’s version of Your Song and cut into Kelly Marie’s Feels Like I’m In Love. We knew we didn’t want to do the stand and sway so had a bit of fun with it and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
The reception was officially kicked off and Smiley Booth had arrived to provide more entertainment for the guests. In fact, it was hard to get some people out of it! The end of the reception came all too soon. It’s true what everyone says about your wedding day going quickly. The entire day seemed to go by at warp speed! Even so, we had the best day and wouldn’t change a single thing. We were surrounded by all of our family and friends in a beautiful setting and couldn’t have asked for more. We’re especially thankful to those who came from overseas to join us. There are many people that helped to make our wedding possible but mostly my parents. Without their help, it certainly wouldn’t have been the same and we are hugely grateful for everything they did for us, including hosting a barbecue the following day!

Lee and I met when we were at school where we were just good friends. It was much later that Lee told me he had always had a crush on me but I had no idea. After our exams we went our separate ways. Lee joined the Navy and sailed the high seas whilst I opted for the bright lights of London city. Years and the pull that Bournemouth has brought us back together. One particular night we met up for a catch up over a couple of drinks. It was there that we started to fall for each other and the rest is history.
www.davejackson-photography.co.uk
Lee decided to propose when we moved into our new home. The only trouble was that it ended up taking us months to complete on our house so for months we were living apart. Lee managed to keep it a secret all that time. It was very romantic standing in our empty house surrounded by cleaning products. He still managed to get down on one knee and look into my eyes lovingly whilst asking me to spend the rest of my life with him.... I said yes! I work for a special needs school as an HR manager which takes up a lot of my time alongside studying in the evenings. Lee is an Engineer and volunteers for DorSAR, a search and rescue team that helps the local police deal with vulnerable missing persons. On top of this we are renovating our property. This doesn’t leave either of us with much time for anything else, so we had decided to get married abroad on the sunny shores of Cyprus. It seems so much simpler walking in to a travel agent and they do all the work for you. Another bonus was the guaranteed weather!

CAKE Typeface:
It was a pretty exciting day at The Dorset Wedding Festival back in April. Hundreds of couples turned out to meet with local wedding suppliers, hear some of the county’s best wedding bands and enjoy a relaxing sunny day of wedding planning. The festival was a huge success for all involved, and the Something Borrowed team are busy plotting and planning for Dorset Wed Fest 2014... No one was more excited than Sam Haine (well, apart from her mum, that is) as this lucky bride won over £6,000 worth of prizes! Sam and her groom, Lee, entered the ‘win a wedding’ raffle and won - so we’ve caught up with the couple to see how their plans are coming along... Sam: “We met with Sam at Holton Lee, our wedding venue. Faith House is lovely and the fact that they are really easy going is great. Sam was a wealth of information and it was great to meet her. I have made contact with Pole Crazy and booked the pole dancing hen party which my mum and I are very excited about. I have passed the organising for this to my mum so the rest is a surprise. Dorset Dub Hire has confirmed our date and we will be going over at some point to see Lottie, the wedding campervan, who will be escorting me to Faith House. We’re still
thinking about our music choices, but I know that I’m in safe hands with Pegasus Discos. Idelica has been talking to us about our options and upgrading the package and has been very helpful and we’re off to see all the vintage china that Swingletree Vintage Hire has to offer, so our guests can dine in style! Ian H Photography is going to be capturing it all for us, which is brilliant. We have ordered and received the bridesmaid dresses. The groom and best man are also kitted out. I’m keeping my dress a secret, so I’ll send you a photo from our big day!
Photo: Bridle Photography
Invites have all been sent and replies are coming back thick and fast. We have booked the New Barn at Holton Lee to accommodate some of our family and friends that will be travelling a distance to share in our day. After writing this, we’ve realised it’s only four months to go! I have developed more grey hairs as there is so much to do. Looks like I will be roping in some help from family members to get things done on time...

Vintage [vintij] adjective representing the high quality of a past time; classic
Gone are the days of the traditional wedding. Nowadays, anything and everything goes. If you can visualise it, you can make it happen. There is always a small part of us though that wants to keep things as they always have been. This is where vintage plays a huge part in people’s weddings. The lovely thing about the vintage theme is that you don’t necessarily have to have old things, although there are some gorgeous true vintage accessories or suppliers. There is also the option of vintage inspired items. This is a great way of incorporating vintage pieces with a modern take. For example; fascinators, dresses, decorations, jewellery and so much more. Here are some ideas locally to inspire your vintage themed wedding.

Wedding discussion is rife in the Something Borrowed office, and recently we started thinking about weddings over the decades, and how different they might have been from those that we see today. We decided that we would interview some couples that got married in each dacade, starting with the 1950s, going right through to the naughties. Each edition of Something Borrrowed will fetaure two weddings from the past. This issue, we chat to Dorothy about her 1954 wedding and Ken about his 1963 big day...
Roy & Dorothy Storey How long was your engagement? Seven months. Roy proposed on Christmas eve and we were married in July. What was the date of your wedding? 3rd July 1954, the day after my 21st birthday. What was the approximate cost of your wedding? I don’t remember exactly, but I do know that our sit down three-course meal cost £110 for 102 people. Did you have any assistance with paying for the wedding? We followed tradition with this. Roy paid for the honeymoon and photographer, I paid for the taxis and flowers and my father and step-mother helped with the rest. Where was the wedding held? We wed in a small church in Coventry and had a our reception at the New Inn. How many guests did you have? 102 Tell us about your wedding day. I remember the day before my wedding
day, because it was my 21st birthday. I was at work until 6 pm that evening and when I got home, many of my relatives had arrived for the weekend. It was a full house that night, and the queue for the bathroom was a nightmare, even for a bride! I dressed early in the morning, my wedding dress had been made by Roy’s aunt - she had also made all five of the bridesmaids’ outfits too. Our ceremony was at 11am so we left quite early. It was a blustery day, and by the time I arrived at the church half my bouquet had blown away! After the service, we all went to the hotel for a three-course dinner. We had a lovely roast chicken. At 4 pm Roy and I left for our honeymoon, as our flight was at 5 pm. I dressed in my ‘going away’ outfit and I remember when we walked to the plane people thinking I was someone famous - so I turned and gave them all a wave! Where did you go on Honeymoon? Guernsey

tax back. Before the wedding day there had been lots of rain. On the actual day itself there was a heavy mist in the morning but in the afternoon it lifted and was the start of a long Indian summer. I got ready at home with my best man. Brian and Alma got ready at her parents’ house. Me and the congregation sang ‘I’m getting married in the morning’ for 20 minutes while we wondered where Alma was, as she was very late for the ceremony. It turns out the car forgot to pick her up!
How long was your engagement? One year What was the date of your wedding? 14th September 1963 What was the approximate cost of your wedding? £110 Did you have any assistance with paying for the wedding? It was paid for by us. Where was your ceremony location? Holy Trinity, Old Wolverton, Milton Keynes Where was the reception held? Co-op Hall, Wolverton How many guests did you have? 100 Tell us about your wedding day. In those days, the best times to get married were April and September. If you married in April, you received a full year’s tax back, in September, 6 months
On the same day as the wedding, the town held its first parade. This proved frustrating but entertaining. After the short reception, we couldn’t get to our car because of the parade so ended up walking. Many bystanders mistook us for part of it! When we arrived at Alma’s parents’ house the local radio station pulled up outside and played a request for us, which was ‘I like it’ by Gerry and The Pacemakers. Afterwards, all of our guests went with us to the train station and threw confetti over us as we boarded the train and, as if on cue, to mark the end of the parade, there was a fly by! Where did you go on Honeymoon? Cliftonville, near Margate for one week.

My
Christian and I met through a friend. My friend was dating his friend, so we started chatting and soon enough, we became a couple. As Christian was based in Blandford, we had our first little date at Sandbanks beach in July. It was a lovely evening but things didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped, as Christian locked his car keys in the car and had to smash the window to retrieve them...Oops!
Christian’s job as Lance Corporal in the 200 Signal Squadron meant that he had to leave for a six month tour in Afghanistan soon after we started dating. It was hard being apart, but when we came home, he booked us flights to Australia to visit where my parents live. I was so happy that we’d get to spend a whole month together, and that my parents would get to meet the man I was in love with. During our last week there Christian took me for a stroll on the beach at night. It was there that he popped

the question on one knee in the sand, and I must say the moonlight bounced off my beautiful ring!
The Groom, Best Man and his ushers all wore their military uniforms, which looked ever so handsome and smart.
I couldn’t wait to start making plans for our big day, but planning our wedding proved to be tricky, as Christian was based in Germany, so we had to spend most of our time arranging things via email and phone. Luckily, when it came to choosing cakes, colours, flowers, decorations, dresses and all the other fun things, I had the help of my good friend and ‘maid of honour’ Sarah Davenport! Sarah was amazing when it came to the late night spreadsheet making and early morning appointments. Without her support I don’t think we’d have had the perfect day we did. We made a great team and the hard work paid off, although it was a shame that Christian was away and couldn’t be a part of all the build up, but he did a wonderful job via the phone and booked a gorgeous horse and carriage for me, which I didn’t see until the day.
Our wedding ceremony was held in St James Church in Poole, which was again a beautiful part of our wedding, then we went onto The Salterns Hotel in Sandbanks. The team there prepared a gorgeous menu and just did a wonderful job on our big day.
Our wedding day came around so quickly as soon enough, it was time...we got married on Saturday 6th October 2012. Was it everything we expected? Well, we expected horrendous rain! The weather was atrocious in the days before, but on the morning of our wedding, at about 9 am, the sun shone through and it was such a beautiful day. Our wedding day was everything we hoped for, we had a beautiful day with all the people we love around us. Perfect. Unfortunately we couldn’t go on honeymoon straight away, as we had to move and settle in our new home in Germany just a week after the big day, but we are hoping we will get to go away together in the next few years. My dress supplier was ‘Pascali’ in Parkstone, and I’d like to thank the lovely women in there. I had the ‘Cinderella’ dress from the Alfred Angelo Disney Collection. It was a proper princess dress - it was amazing!! Danika from CAKE made us a beautiful cake, which tasted gorgeous and looked perfect.
Christian ordered me a horse and carriage, from KC Carriages which was the most amazing experience. I actually felt like a real Disney princess! The company was fab, so reasonable with the price and were just such lovely people and I recommend them to the moon and back! The carriage was beautiful and couldn’t have been more perfect. Andy Owen was our wedding photographer. I’ve worked with him for years in the modelling industry so he became a great friend of ours and took gorgeous photos for us on our special day.

Girls Night
Girls night in...Bridesmaids Kristen Wiig plays Annie, a thirtysomething single woman whose ego takes a blow when she finds out that her unmarried friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is getting married. Annie is asked to be Maid Of Honour but soon finds an enemy in bridesmaid, Helen. As Helen tries to take over the bridal party plans, Annie struggles to keep control of the bridesmaids and her friendship with the
bride, as well as her feelings of being left behind, despite needing to put on a happy face for her friend. Rather than the film focusing on the couple getting married as in your typical chick flick, it revolves around the women’s relationships with each other and the competition that take place between them. So the saying always a bridesmaid and never a bride doesn’t apply here – it’s all about them! This is one film the men will love too as it’s disgracefully enjoyable! We give this wedding movie 5 out of 5 hearts! s s s s s

Bellissimo Wedding Planners are professional wedding and event planners and as well as managing venues for others they also run their iani, own wedding Melanie K edding Planners oW venue, Beach Bellissim Weddings Bournemouth, which is a unique beach and marquee based wedding venue where they are working on around 60 weddings for the 2013 season at their venue alone. So you could say that they know a thing or two about marquee weddings and events! The good stuff Now marquees can be a great way of creating your own space for your style of wedding or event. You can opt for a framed or “clearspan” marquee which will give you the best use of space inside and will usually be the most cost effective marquee but not always the most glamorous. There are so many options now for internal layouts, flooring, linings, glamming up with fabulous starlight cloths, different dance floors and different bars. You can even incorporate window walls and sky light panels to let the light flood in or to ensure you don’t miss a view when your guests are inside. A traditional marquee is also known as a poled marquee and has a much more elegant look about it from the outside but you tend not to have such good use of space internally and the costs will usually rise as these marquees take longer to erect. You can also now work with ti-pi and stretch marquees for a more modern approach and the ideas are endless! Research what is out there and get price and layout ideas from different companies.
The not so good stuff The common misconception with marquees is that they are a cheaper and easier way of having a wedding or event – wrong on both counts! Marquees are not usually the cheapest option for your wedding although there are some great venues out there who offer packages with land and marquee hire all in so do check out what’s in your area. Usually though you have a sometimes costly land hire to consider plus the cost of the marquee and as it is a blank canvass you literally have to bring everything in to create your venue so don’t forget about the WCs (very important and always try to house them inside a separate smaller marquee with a walkway so your guests don’t have to go outside for the WC if its raining!) the generator and all the cabling and power requirements (ask an expert what the power requirements will be to power all of your suppliers for your wedding as this is very important to get right), the lighting, heating, flooring (also critical – don’t skimp on this – carpet straight on a soggy grassed field is not pleasant if it’s raining or with poorly draining soil – always try to go for a suspended or all weather floor) parking of cars, access for suppliers to deliver and set up well in advance, water supply for loos and kitchen and someone there for the days leading up and on the day itself to ensure that all the delivery and set up goes well and someone in charge of all your suppliers on the day. If you need help – get in the experts and call Melanie or her team at Bellissimo 01202 533014 www.bellissimo-weddings.co.uk

A Mother’s Wish... Seeing her daughter marry the man of her dreams was the last wish of Joyce Stainer. After being given just two weeks to live, could the couple pull together an entire wedding in 24 hours? Sarah tells us her wedding story. Kevin and I met on eHarmony Internet Dating. We spoke every night on the phone and our first date was lunch at The Fighting Cocks pub in the New Forest. Kevin turned up with a gift bag with my favourite chocolate, perfume and a single red rose, very romantic. For our first anniversary, Kevin took me away for the weekend as a surprise to Beechfield House Hotel near Bath. We went to the beautiful village of Lacock for the day on the 31 July 2011 and looked around the Abbey. As we were walking around the grounds we come to a Babbling Brook. As I turned around Kevin was on one knee with a box in his hand and this is where he popped the question. We set a date for the wedding of 31 July 2014. In 2011 we had the most devastating news that no-one wants to ever hear. My Mum was diagnosed with cancer and had to have a major operation to remove a tumour followed by Chemotherapy. We were told by my parents she would always have cancer, but as long as they controlled it she would be fine. To our shock in July 2012 we were told that Mum had another tumour in her stomach, as well as tumours in the rest of her body which they could not do anything about. We were told she only had at the most a couple of weeks to live. When my Dad broke the news to us he said the thing that upset my Mum the most was that she was not going to be part of her daughter’s wedding day. I was so close to my Mum and it broke my heart that she was not going to be in my life anymore or be part of my special day.
My Mum spent her last days in Salisbury Hospice where the doctors and nurses were fantastic. They suggested us talking to the Hospital Chaplin to see if we could arrange our wedding in the Hospice. However, this was not possible but they suggested applying for a Marriage Waiver at our local Registry Office to get married and then to have a blessing at the Hospice so my Mum could be part of it. We applied for the Marriage Waiver on the Thursday and got given the go ahead on the Friday morning to get married on Saturday 7 July 2012, giving us less than 24 hours to organise everything! We made a few phone calls to tell close family and friends and then we went to the Hospice to give my parents the news. The smile on my Mum’s face was magical.
Kevin went to stay with his best mate, Shaun and managed to buy his suit, shirt and five matching ties from Marks & Spencer. I went shopping with my best friend, Kirsty in Southampton as we only had a few hours to get everything. One of the nurses at the Hospice told me that Oxfam had a wedding dress department so this is where we went first. We did not arrive until after 4pm and the department was closed but when Kirsty explained to the lady the situation they opened it especially. I tried on lots of dresses but they were either too small or big. The last one I tried on was not a perfect fit but another friend altered it for me. We went straight to West Quay, Southampton and managed to get all of our hair accessories from Claire’s, my Mum’s dress and Kirsty’s dress from Marks & Spencer and my two daughters, Ella & Rosie’s dresses from Next. Then we had to get some rings. Mine was not a problem and we managed to get one easily. Every jewellery shop we went in did not stock Kevin’s size. Kirsty’s mum phoned us to see how we were getting on and we told her we were having problems getting Kevin’s ring. Kirsty’s sister-in-law managed to get one from another town! Kirsty’s mum also told us she would sort out my bouquet and the girls flowers and button holes. Jane The Florist in Fordingbridge, my home town, managed to provide us with everything else. Three of my other friends did my hair, make-up, nails and a wedding cake. My Godparents organised a finger buffet and drinks. A friend of the family took photos. You certainly realise you have great friends and family when you have so little time to organise such a big event. Kirsty also decorated my house with a few Bride-to-be items and I invited some of my other friends to join us for drinks. We got married at Ringwood Registry Office which was very emotional as in the back of
our minds we knew why this day had been bought forward. I tried not to cry but in the end I had tears like everyone else. Then straight up to Salisbury Hospice where the nurses had decorated the day room and the Hospital Chaplin was waiting to carry out our blessing. My Mum had to be wheeled in on her bed, but she still looked beautiful and had a smile on her face throughout. We then celebrated with our close family and friends. It made my Mum’s day and she was so grateful and said thank you to Kevin. Sadly my Mum passed away a few days later. This year we have decided to have a blessing again as my Mum always wanted me to have the big day which I dreamed of. This time it will be at Ellingham Church with 130 friends and family followed by a party at St Leonard’s Hotel in July. I’m sure it will be another emotional day but we know my Mum will be with us in spirit.

The Honeymoon Back in the olden days, the groom would literally abduct the bride away from her family and neighbours! Luckily, this did develop into more ritualised, fun reenactments of taking the bride away. After the bride was taken, there was a tradition of the bride and groom ‘hiding away’ for 30 days to make babies! During this time, they drank mead, a honey sweetened alcoholic drink which was thought to increase fertility. This time was referred to as the ‘honeymoon’ period.
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue and a Sixpence in Your Shoe Time to address this magazine’s namesake! This rhyme is said to come from the Victorian times. “Something old” links the bride to her family and her past whilst “something new” represents good fortune for the future. “Something borrowed” is to symbolise the family and friends who will be there to help the bride and “something blue” stands for fidelity and loyalty. The silver sixpence is to wish the bride wealth in marriage. I have also read that the “something borrowed” should be from someone with children to wish the bride fertility! It has also been said that the “something new” and “something old” are to ward away and confuse evil spirits. In any case, we all know what our Something Borrowed should be!

Phase 1 - Baking the cakes It is easier if you prepare & cook one tier at a time. Pre-heat oven to 170c/325f/ gas 3. 1. Prepare your tins by placing a circle of greaseproof paper the size of the tin in the bottom of each tin. Grease the inside edges of each tin and shake flour around. This will stop the cake from sticking to the tin.
approx 30 minutes or test by pressing a finger tip onto the top of the cake. If the cake bounces back it is cooked. If it leaves an indent it needs longer in the oven. Alternatively, you can put all the mixture in one deep tin & slice into three layers when cooked & cooled, but allow longer to cook.
