Digital Love

Joe and I met through Plenty of Fish. Having met some strange sorts previously, I had decided that Joe was going to be the last guy I would date from this site for a while! Little did I know that it would be true for a very different reason...

Holiday Romance

We had flown out to Costa Del Sol with my mum and dad for a short holiday. We got lost on the way to the beach, and walked for ages. Joe was acting super weird and I thought I had annoyed him somehow. When we finally got to the beach,I asked mum to take a nice picture of us together. As I posed, Joe got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I thought he was joking and told him to get up, but then he got the ring out and I knew he was being serious!

Making Plans

The location of our reception was the

most important thing for me personally and Joe wanted a church ceremony. We decided on St. Michaels Church in Verwood as I used to go there as a child with the school. For our reception venue, we hired out the beautiful Sopley Mill in Christchurch. It was everything we wanted and more. We wanted a chilled-out reception in the countryside that could accommodate our massive family and Sopley Mill beat all the other venues by miles.

Highly Recommend

Rebecca Love Photography and Make Up by Maibel really stood out as outstanding suppliers. Rebecca is just the loveliest person you could wish to work with! We are quite a quiet couple, and were a bit anxious about having our photo taken but she made us feel super comfortable in front of the camera. She was a fabulous photographer and we love all of our pictures – we can’t pick a favourite!

19

Maibel was my makeup artist for the day and she is just brilliant! She is such a fab lady, she listened to what I wanted and her make up lasted all day long. She was also great help when getting ready in the morning – she even helped me get into my dress! Such a multitasker haha.

Dressed to Vow

I am rubbish when it comes to shopping and fashion! I will mostly be found in jeans and a hoodie so the thought of shopping for a wedding dress did terrify me somewhat! I took mum and my sister, Chelsea, along to a few shops but

20

nothing had what I was looking for. I just wanted a fitted dress, not too sparkly or poofy and not super uncomfortable. I went along to Minster Designs in Wimborne and met Oxana, who is the owner. She was great, she listened to what I wanted and after trying on about three dresses I finally put my wedding dress on and knew it was the one! I managed to find my headpiece, veil and belt there as well. She also did all of my alterations which I found super useful as the thought of trying to sort that out as well would have been super stressful. I would highly recommend people to visit her

beautiful shop – it is such a hidden gem!

T his Bride's Advice

My advice to other brides would be to plan in advance, we booked our wedding 18 months in advance, it gave us time to save for our big day and lots of our suppliers allowed us to pay monthly bit by bit which was super helpful. Me Bold

A bright accent colour can have huge impact - this aqua blue bunting was made by Bunting by Chris. Photo by: Dru Dodd Photography

Brights Brights are a firm wedding favourite. There’s a huge palette to choose from but fuschia, orange and kingfisher blue are top choices for many brides. The key with brights is to remember the phrase ‘less is more’. Use the strong colour sparingly throughout your wedding and you’ll have a consistent, pulled together look. Bold and beautiful can apply to mums too! This incredible dress is perfect for Mother of the Bride. Available from Fab Frocks of Westbourne. Coeur de Lion at Forum Jewellers is a fabulous range of colourful stainless steel jewellery.

Brotherly Love...

I was friends with Tom’s sister Marie before I met Tom. She lives in America, and was over visiting. I was telling her about my dating escapades and she said ‘Have you thought about going out with my brother?’ at this point I didn’t really know Tom, so we met up for a drink and by the third date, we knew it was going somewhere! Tom had taken me to the cinema and afterwards we were saying goodbye; he said ‘Do you want to make this a boyfriend, girlfriend kind of thing?’ From then we had fabulous year and a half of getting know to know each other before moving in together.

A kind of thing...

On the evening of our third anniversary we went for dinner at The Larder House. Tom proposed on our way to the beach at

Fishermans Walk in Southbourne. Tom had commissioned a beautiful ring by my friend, jeweller Emma Calvert, to propose with. It was such a special evening. As Tom got down on one knee, he asked me ‘Do you want to make this a husband, wife kind of thing?’

Where to Start

Well, I work at Highcliffe Castle and so my wedding knowledge is pretty good. I knew venue booking was the first thing to tick off, I was familiar with Parley Manor as I had been there before, so we booked an appointment and fell in love the venue. We booked our wedding a couple of days later! Tom was involved from the beginning; there were certain things he loved, in particular choosing the music,. We wanted a relaxed

wedding and that’s how we planned it making sure it was fun every step of the way.

Childhood Dream

Out of everything I found dress hunting quite daunting. I had a vision of what I wanted my dress to be like; a 50s-inspired tea dress, maybe in blush. And that’s where I went wrong. I had an idea of what I wanted and when I found something that fitted the ‘dream’ it didn’t suit me. Such disappointment! But, I decided to be more open-minded and 15 dresses at three different shops later, I found the one at Isobel’s in Parkstone. I ended up with a fairytale A line princess style gown, which I adored. I read a great article online afterwards that said those dresses you dream about from when you are young right up to when you set out

33

to find your wedding dress don’t exist, they are a amalgamation all the dresses you’ve seen over the years, and they all form part of your perfect dress.

Suit Up

We thought a lot about hire vs buy, and the sums were adding up to be too much for just one day. Tom had seven suits to shop for, so we decided to hire. Isobel’s in Parkstone have an excellent team who put Tom at ease and guided him through the process.

34

Surrounded by Love

Our priority was making sure we had our friends and family there to share the day, as well as remembering my Dad and Tom’s Mum who had passed away. We marked their memory by having candles lit by photos of them both. We had a truly perfect day, and we wouldn’t change a thing!

T his Bride's Advice

Don’t have too many expectations of how you want things to happen, if it’s right for you and your fiancé, it

will be. Have fun and enjoy yourself you only do this once and make sure you make it the day that you both want. On the day absorb every minute, you can’t relive it. Sit back and enjoy all of your planning coming together! awkward

questions

36 36

Is it rude to not invite children to our wedding?

Can I ask my guest to bring their own alcohol?

The short answer? No. It’s perfectly fine. You might get a few comments from a couple of friends, but most people will have the decency to whinge behind your back. Kids at a wedding is a personal choice, and for some the idea of not having their friends and family’s children is a strange one. There’s a variety of companies, like Tots and Tiaras, that can be brought in to keep them entertained throughout the day, which won’t cause a disruption. However, some (us included) couldn’t afford to include all of the children that come with the adults invited. For many weddings there is a limit on the number of guests the venue can hold and if the children take up 30 of those spots, you may have to not invite friends or family that you really want to be there. At the end of the day it needs to be the wedding that you both want.

If your venue allows it, then we think it’s a great idea! The cost of alcohol is a big consideration for your wedding. If you’re getting married in a hotel or venue, it’s a good idea to check bar prices with your guests in mind. If you’re having a marquee wedding, or a wedding where you can bring in your own caterers and bar provision, then first ask about corkage fees, as these can make the ‘bring your own’ option a lot more pricey than expected. Some couples do a mixture of both, have guests bring their own wine for the day, but then change to a cash-bar in the evening – A&D Mobile Bars are worth having a chat with about this.

Wedding save the dates and invitations give guest plenty of warning to find a baby-sitter and even though they might not be there till the bitter end of the day, they can come for the important bits. Those that only attend the evening reception aren’t likely to bring kids anyway, so they’re not so much an issue.

If you are lucky enough to have an unrestricted venue, such as Weddings in a Field at Farmer Palmer’s, then asking your guests to bring their own drinks is a great solution for everyone. You don’t have to budget for a bar or for drinks, and your guests get the drinks they like best for a fraction of bar costs. If you are worried about asking, then try something like this on your invitations;

If anyone does complain that their little darling wasn’t included on the list, you can always say that as it’s an adult-only wedding, you want them to be able to enjoy themselves and that you’ve researched a local babysitting service, if they need it.

Welcome drinks as well as table and toast drinks will be provided for our guests but to save everyone money on high bar charges, we’re going to have a bring your own drinks reception. There will be some ice/fridges available for your beverages.

Midnight Proposal

Steve got down on one knee in a little cottage we were staying in for NYE 2015. We had been out walking all day in the snowy North Pennines with our dog, Lulu. We’d been for dinner and come back to the cottage to play games and have some drinks. The TV was on in the background and just as we heard the count down, he ran to his coat and grabbed a box from the pocket. I knew what was going on and started giggling with excitement as he asked me to marry him. He presented me with the most stunning ring I have ever seen, a marquis cut emerald nestled between two diamonds. So of course the answer was YES!

Getting Started

We wanted to have a festival/laid back style day at first so we went to see Gorcombe Farm where they have a huge events field. Everything seemed very reasonably priced but when added altogether, it was over our budget. So we went back to the drawing board, someone I worked with at the time mentioned her wedding at Shell Bay restaurant and after looking into it, I knew it was the one.

Stress for 'the' Dress

Finding my dress was a little stressful, I was looking for something a bit different. I’m not traditional in any way, so when I tried on the

lovely dresses in the shops, they looked really odd on me. So I took to the internet, and after scouring the web for months, I eventually found a two-piece which I could work with and alter. It was made-toorder from a designer on Etsy, so there were a lot of emails back and forth. She sent me fabric samples of the skirt and top to approve beforehand. When the final dress arrived it was so beautifully made, and exactly to my sketch/spec but the top and skirt were different tones of ivory! So I had to find someone local to make another one with only a month to go. I was very lucky to find Kimberly Stone, an extremely

45

talented seamstress in Hamworthy, who pulled out all the stops to help me in such a short space of time. Nothing was too much trouble, even though she was under a huge amount of pressure. She made me a new top, altered my ceremony skirt and made a pencil skirt for me to change into in the evening. Everything was pressed and delivered to my door the day before the wedding.

by Meghan Keates, The Wedding Emporium

A

s experienced Wedding Show organisers, The Wedding Emporium love nothing more than talking about all things Weddings, whether that is helping a supplier think about dressing their stand or presenting their business, or advising our following of ‘planning couples’ about the latest trend. Their shows are created with love and offer a perfect balance for visiting couples and exhibitors alike. A visit (or two or three) to a Wedding Show is a rite of passage for all actively planning couples; it’s an amazing way of meeting local suppliers, being inspired by different ideas, themes, venues, and even various photography styles, because every business is unique and different. Here’s how to not only survive a fair, but get the most from one!

BE PREPARED

Wedding shows can get pretty busy, so wear comfortable shoes and be sure to take a drink and some nibbles. Be organised and bring along your diary and any pictures or samples of your theme/ ideas if you have them. This is really helpful to suppliers, who can then get a real feel for the vision you have for your wedding day and you can also book in any consultations at the event.

out whether there is free parking, or you are going to have to find somewhere to park and pay.

BE INSPIRED!

Wedding shows are full of inspiration! Browse the different displays and stands and see what catches your eye, in relation to your wedding day vision. If you haven’t had any thoughts on this

BUY TICKETS

If the event is ticketed, find out the price beforehand and check for any available offers, as organisers often have an ‘early bird’ ticket price. If the event is free entry, check if there is a pre-register option to guarantee a goodie bag or to skip the queues. Sometimes you can gain access to the event earlier than others and have some quiet browsing time if you pre-register! Also, check

yet, then this is the perfect place to start pulling together some ideas.

COLLECT CARDS

The main point in visiting the shows (other than trying cake samples and seeing pretty dresses!) is to meet recommended local suppliers. If you are lucky enough to get a goodie bag, there will probably be lots

your big day. If they are busy, move on and come back when they are free.

ENTER COMPETITIONS

The event organisers may have a raffle or competition running. Also, suppliers are keen to chat and often offer a chance to win a prize or offer if you sign up to their email list. Make sure you ask both to ensure you don’t miss out. of flyers and brochures included, but don’t forget to collect the details of the companies that interest you as well as taking the time to chat with them about what they offer.

TAKE NOTES

If you take a notebook and pen then you can jot down any conversations or ideas you had with suppliers. This can be used in any consultations you may book in for the future.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO CHAT!

The companies at the show WANT to talk to you so ask them plenty of questions. They will be happy to answer them and you will soon pick up on the fact if they are the right supplier to become involved with

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SHOW OFFERS

Some companies may offer an exclusive show discount or perhaps an additional service or product if you book a consultation or book their services on the weekend of the show. This could save you lots of pennies so should be something you could consider.

TAKE A BREATHER!

Shows can get a little overwhelming, if the venue has a cafe or bar and you are feeling a little restless, then pop in and grab a drink and bite to eat, have a browse through your collection of goodies and then continue with the fun! It’s a great time to take another look around.

PLAN AHEAD

Some shows, depending on the size, will have bridal catwalk shows and other demonstrations. Find out what time these are on and if you need to pre-book seats and plan your visit around this. Follow those tips and you are guaranteed to get the most of any show you visit. If, after visiting an event, you’re not finding the right supplier or what you are looking for was not there, ask the event organisers who they could recommend; Here at The Wedding Emporium all our suppliers are featured on The Wedding List with TWE and running a large Wedding networking group we have access to hundreds of suppliers just waiting to hear from you.

Do’s and Don'ts

on the hen do

Do

DO make a list of everyone you would like invited. If you mix with different groups of people, someone might get missed without your input! DO make sure whoever is tasked with the planning knows your likes and dislikes. DO relax and enjoy yourself - don’t worry about people getting on or what’s happening next! DO go with the flow - so penis deely-boppers are NOT your thing, but if they’re part of the plan, joining in will be more fun than refusing. DO be safe. Hens have been known to drink a little more than usual, so make sure you’re always with someone you know. DO have an amazing time with your best gals. Bond, laugh and make incredible memories!

54

Don't

DON’T be a diva! If you want to have input on the planning, make sure you let your designated organiser know first. DON’T be disappointed if only a few friends can make your hen party if you opt for a trip away. If lots can’t make it, have a ‘home leg’ night out too! DON’T feel like you have to have a traditional hen party if it’s not something you’d enjoy. ‘Sten’ parties are growing in popularity. DON’T be afraid to say what you’d like included. If printed T-shirts are a must, make it known! DON’T feel embarrassed to bring up money. Find out if you’re expected to contribute or not. DON’T be scared of trying something new! Pole dancing? Life drawing? Zorbing? You set the tone for the activity, so just throw yourself in to it!
