With my sister’s wedding just a few weeks away, I’ve been a big part of the final planning stages of a wedding. It’s highlighted a few things to me; you will need lots of help from family and friends, people are RUBBISH at RSVPing on time, Spreadsheets are a godsend and that, at the end of the day, all that really matters is you and your beloved saying ‘I do’. With this in mind, we have created the ‘planning’ issue, which takes a bride or groom through from the first days of wedding planning to the last hours of being a maiden. I remember too well the constant ‘running through the day’ checklist I made my husband sit through, but it really did help me know what needed to be done, by who and by when. Try it! Hopefully you’ll find some useful information that will make planning your big day easy and enjoyable.

Lastly, keep an eye on our facebook page for details of an upcoming competitin! Take care and see you soon,

Eleanor xox

1 A Line The A Line dress is a classic style that suits every body shape. Nipped in at the waist, the full skirt enhances your figure. 2 Mermaid/Fishtail Like the name suggests, this style is tail like. Snugly fitted through the bodice and hips, it flares in to a trumpet skirt. Ideal for hourglass and pear shaped brides.

3 Sheath/Column A sheath dress skims the body, and is often made of a flowing, soft material. A looser fit than the Mermaid, but still accentuates the hips, this dress suits hourglass figures and those with a less defined waist. 4 Empire line The defining feature of an empire line dress is the drape of material, which starts from under the bustline. Gently skimming the torso, this dress suits all body types. The skirt on an empire line dress can be slimline or full.

4

5

5 Ballgown The most fairytale princess like style, this dress is all about volume. The close fitting bodice is met with a full, flouncy skirt, helping to flatter pretty much any body shape. Petite brides may feel a little swamped by huge swathes of material, but these can be altered to suit.

One of the most distinctive things about your wedding dress is what it made of. Different fabrics have different qualities, which changes the way your dress hangs, moves and looks. Have a read to see which fabrics appeal to you...

Satin Satin is the mainstay of the wedding dress world. Durable and versatile with a soft sheen, satin has a lot of body to it, making it perfect for a more structured gown. With its supportive properties this fabric works well with all body types. Chiffon Chiffon is a light, floaty fabric that’s very sheer. It’s most often used as an overlay on a dress. Organza Like chiffon, organza is a sheer, lightweight fabric, that is either layered or overlayed on a thicker fabric, like satin. Organza and chiffon are also often used in bridesmaid dresses. Tulle Tulle is a wedding favourite. It’s netlike qualities make it perfect for filling out princess style gowns. A new trend is glitter tulle, where the tulle is covered in

glitter and a chiffon overlay is added. Lace Lace has seen a huge resurgence in popularity, and we’re glad - it’s beautiful! There is a vast range of lace, from Chantilly to French, each of which has its own properties. Duchesse Satin A mix of natural and mad made fabrics, duchesse satin has a wrinkle proof quality that makes it an ideal choice for a wedding dress. Silk Ah, the gold standard of fabrics. Silk is luxurous and decadent...and expensive. There are both natural and synthetic silks, offering a variety of textures. Illusion Illusion is a finely woven net fabric used for low backs, sleeves and necklines. There is a huge trend for illusion backs at the moment, so this is often seen. Dupion A type of silk, dupion has a coarse, rough appearance. A heavy material, this hangs well and makes a wonderful winter wedding dress.

Rachel & Sean All photography by Jason Perkins Photography

Knock Out

Sean and I met in our local boxing gym, Oakmeade ABC! I had just been sparring and had a split lip and a bloodied nose- so glamorous. Sean still says I looked hot though!

Wined & Dined

Sean proposed in October 2013 when I was five months pregnant with our son. He arranged to take me to the restaurant where we had our first date, but when we arrived it was totally packed and so noisy we went somewhere else. He was going to do it in the restaurant but then someone had a birthday cake brought out and was sung to and I said ‘I’d hate that, I would be so embarrassed! So after the meal, he took me for a walk along the cliff tops to look at the stars and got down on one knee. It was very romantic!

Getting Started...

The first thing I thought about was the colour scheme, since that would guide a lot of the other decisions, and secondly was designing the cake. I’m a cake decorator, and had so

many ideas about how I wanted my own cake to look. I knew I’d be making it myself, and it had to be perfect!

the table plan; I have a pretty big family and we are lucky to have a lot of friends- it was so hard to fit everyone in!

Sean knew that I’d dreamed of a big, white wedding and he was happy for me to take the lead in planning, he even told me I could have whatever I wanted if it made me happy. Although I was ‘in charge’ of the planning, Sean still had lots of input - he even chose the car - a pink Cadillac! Planning was fairly simple, probably because I knew what I wanted, so dealing with suppliers was easy. The only trouble I had was

What mattered to me... The atmosphere/ ambience was important to me and the aesthetical aspect. I wanted the feel of vintage Hollywood glamour - gold, crystals, pearls and lace!

The dress was also a big deal. I went to Pascali in Parkstone first and fell in love with the third dress I tried on. I didn’t want to settle straight away so went to another three

shops before I realised I was just looking for a dress to match the one I had found! I thought I would go for a slinky vintage number but ended up going full princess gown!

T his Bride'sAdvice

Plan early and plan well. I enjoyed every bit of putting my wedding together and it was much less stressful having everything written down with checklists. Also expect to go over your budget, there are so many little things that you forget about.

There for you on your most significant day

Music to my ears....

W

hen it comes to choosing the right music for your wedding, where do you start? There’s so much to think about; from the music you walk down the aisle to, to the song you select for your first dance. Your music really sets the tone for your day. Rather than us tell you what you should do, let’s hear from couples who have tied the knot; My husband is a huge AFC Bournemouth fan, so we asked our organist to play the Match of the Day theme tune. Sam I walked down the aisle to ‘Kiss Me Honey, Honey’ by Shirley Bassey. It made everyone smile, and created the relaxed, light atmosphere I wanted. Jill We picked ‘Pencil Full of Lead’ for the bride’s entrance and ‘Oh Happy Day’ to exit - it was a very good day! Ben We didn’t have a first dance, but we exited the ceremony to Bjork ‘Big Time Sensuality’ Wendy Our first dance was to ‘I Swear’ by All 4 One. Jodie Our ceremony song was ‘A Whole New World’ from Disney’s Aladdin. Samantha I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of ‘Whatever’ by Oasis, we walked back up to Stevie Wonder’s ‘Signed, Sealed,

Delivered’ and our first dance was ‘Day Like This’ by Elbow. Katie My sister and her new husband walked back up the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme song! Dom I walked down the aisle to Bryan Adams ‘Everything I Do’, which was played by a harpist. We exited to Christina Perri’s ‘A Thousand Years’, also played on the harp. Our first dance was to ‘All of Me’ by John Legend, which was sung by our band. Charlotte We had a string quartet for the ceremony; I walked down the aisle to ‘Canon in D’ by Pachelbel, we walked out to ‘All You Need is Love’ by the Beatles and our first dance was to ‘Halo’ by the Cure. Lauren Our first dance was to ‘Amazed’ by Lonestar. Emma I walked in to ‘You’re so Cool’ by Hans Zimmer and our first dance was ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ by Frank Sinatra Rachel We picked ‘Bad Things’ by Jase Everett as our first dance! Amy I walked down the aisle to Einaudi’s ‘Le Onde’,and for our first dance, I recorded me singing Martina McBride’s ‘There You Are’ Elizabeth

Our first dance was ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ from Toy Story! Clare We had ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ because my wedding dress was blue! Laura My entrance was a string quartet version of Take That’s ‘Greatest Day’ and walked out to ‘Spring’ by Vivaldi. Our first dance was sung by a friend and played by my brother on guitar and was ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ (since my hubby is a Liverpool fan!) Charlotte My entrance was to a guitar acoustic of ‘Once Upon a Dream’ (from Sleeping Beauty) and our first dance was Emeli Sande’s ‘My Kind of Love’. Rhiannon Our exit song from the ceremony was one I wrote and recorded for my wife. First dance was ‘Better Man’ by Paolo Nutini. Ben I walked in to ‘I’d Rather be with You’ by Joshua Radin and we left to ‘Girl I Wanna Lay You Down’ by the Animal Liberation Orchestra. No first dance, too busy eating Domino’s pizza! Rachel

Advice from Mark at Pegasus Discos The Bride & Grooms first dance can be seen as the transition between the formalities of the day and the party starting, but it can be so much more. Traditionally, it has always been a slow number with just the two of you on the dancefloor swaying to the music with everyone looking on, but it doesn’t to be that way, other ideas can include inviting the parents and wedding party to join you halfway through. In the past I have seen song choices such as the Lambada and bizarrely, the ‘Conga’ used as a first dance. Crazes come and go, anyone remember the mash-ups or flash mobs? But there are other dances to consider as well; Father & daughter, Mother & Son, done properly these can add emotion and memories for you and your guests. If you are not confident speak, to a dance teacher about choreographing a dance to your chosen song. At the end of the day, do what you are comfortable with, but the first dance will remain a focal point for your family and friends to share in your happiness. If you are wondering Wendy and myself chose, it was Spandau Ballet ‘True’. Mark G.

Me Beautiful

Beautiful Bordeaux The richness of bordeaux makes for a very regal and elegant wedding colour scheme. It can be mixed with different colours to compliment different seasons. Accompanied by a blush pink, this adds a lighter tone which can lift your decor and bouquet. Gold makes for a luxurious accent colour - but use sparingly to avoid the Midas effect!

Me Fabulous

Soft Metal Far from being a dull colour, grey is a flattering and sophisticated choice. A soft, dove grey offers a cool accent colour, which can be warmed up with peach (as seen here) or toned with cool greeny blues. Peach tones make for a romantic, pretty alternative to pink - think grown-up elegance. Ecru (a creamy-grey) is a different option for your base colour.

Jenny & Tony All photography by Mark Stickland Photography

Office Romance

We met (quite boringly) at work. I remember the day that Tony started, I did a double take a thought ‘Wow, he is gorgeous!’ I had no idea he felt exactly the same until about six months later when he asked me out on a date.

Ti Amo

Tony proposed in Rome, Italy. (He has a connection to Italy; his dad is Italian) He surprised me with my passport one Friday

30

morning, and I didn’t believe that he was serious! A few hours later we landed in Rome and over the next couple of days we enjoyed the glorious sights of the city. On our last night, Tony suggested that we go to St Peter’s Square; after chatting for a while, sitting on the steps gazing up at the beautiful Vatican under the stars, Tony reached into his pocket, went down on one knee and asked me to be his wife! We didn’t start to plan

the wedding for about six months after we got engaged - we had no idea where to start! We waited for the BIC wedding show in February 2015. We were completely overwhelmed by the choices initially, but after we sorted through all the thousands of magazines/leaflets into categories, we started to narrow it down. The planning was hard work, but I was very lucky that Tony wanted to be completely involved in everything!

I did a lot of the initial planning and budgeting and Tony researched and booked a lot of the suppliers we had decided upon. We worked really well together and I couldn’t have done it without him!

Where to say 'I do'

We went to The Italian Villa and fell in love with it immediately. We gave each other ‘the nod’ as we were looking around the venue and knew it would be perfect for us. The Italian theme was exactly what we wanted for our wedding with Tony’s heritage! I had always wanted to get married in a castle, so we visited Highcliffe castle and

as soon as we walked into the magnificent Wintergarden room with the gorgeous windows and high ceilings, we knew this was where we wanted to say ‘I do’. So that is what we did....had the best of both worlds; ceremony at Highcliffe Castle and then had our wedding breakfast and evening reception at The Italian Villa.

Love at first sight...

I knew what kind of dress I wanted in my mind; I had seen a dress in Minster Designs, Wimborne so I went with my mum to try it on. It was stunning! I would have said ‘yes to the dress’ there and then but I

couldn’t believe that I could be so lucky first time! So I went to a few other places, but that first dress was always on my mind and each dress I tried didn’t make me feel the same way. It was inevitable.....I went back to see Oxana at Minster Designs and tried that very first dress on once again. As soon as I saw myself in the mirror, I beamed with happiness and knew this was the one!

Dancing Queen

I love dancing and Tony was up for the challenge of a ‘different’ first dance. We chose a medley of a few different songs that meant something to us....that

was the easy part! I asked Anna Knowles, who owns Limelight Dance Academy, to choreograph a routine for us. It was tough and we put a lot of work into practising, but it was all worth it. On the night, unfortunately something was unplugged and our music cut out near the end....but once that music came back on, we picked up the routine and finished it off like pros! Our family and friends were so into it and cheered us on the whole way through. It was so much fun!

Unfortunately our ceremony was delayed slightly but our guests were kept entertained by the beautiful music of Keysworth String Quartet who created

The best decision we made was having a string quartet for our wedding ceremony.

such a wonderful atmosphere at the castle; it was like a fairytale. It really was the happiest day of our lives!

Hannah & Andy All photography by Bridle Photography

Bromance

We met through my older brother Chris. Andy was one of Chris’ best friends and was one of his Best Men at his wedding. We starting dating just after my brother’s wedding.

Birthday Surprise...

I had arranged for us to go out for dinner for Andy’s birthday. We went to a local pub for a meal and Andy order us both a glass of prosecco and got down on one knee. I was very excited and didn’t expect it at all, as I was the one who had arranged for a babysitter for our son and booked a table for the evening for HIS birthday.

Getting Started

The first thing we did was book our venue, The Crown Hotel Blandford. We had already seen the venue and fallen in love with it. We visited one of their wedding open days and book the venue. We also got great ideas for other wedding bits. I loved the whole wedding planning process; I started with a small folder full of leaflets and magazines and ended up with a A4 ringbinder full!!! I took just over 18 months

to plan; I booked the registrar, venue and Bridle Photography, our photographer, early on. I found the having a check list and trying to achieve something every month meant that I wasn’t stressed just before the big day. As I work in a school, I made the most of school breaks and had certain things I wanted to achieve by the end of each holiday.

Jewel in the Crown

We fell in love with The Crown Hotel in Blandford almost straight away. It was important for us to find somewhere that was fairly private and had the space for children to run around. As we

have a six year old ourselves and lots of children in both sides of the family, it was important that the venue accommodated for children. The Crown was perfect, we had our own personal garden area which offered plenty of space for the children to play, and more importantly, the parents could relax knowing that they were safe. The staff right from day one were amazing, Francesca and Robert could not have done enough for us. The hotel had to close for a refit, and as a result, we had to change our date. Robert was amazing during this time and we were extremely lucky to have our wedding in a brand new hotel! We could not recommend

a better place to have a wedding.

Dressing Up

When I started looking for dresses I had an idea in my head that I wanted a classic lace dress. I tried a few on in one shop and really didn’t feel very bridal like. We then went to Courtyard Bridal. All I can say is Gerry is amazing! I just popped in to have a quick look with my mum and maid of honour, I found the perfect dress!! I came back a few days later to try it on again and absolutely fell in love with it! I was given some great advice from

Gerry; try on loads of dresses, completely different to the one I had chosen and that would help me to confirm if this was my dress or not. She was right! I tried on a few more and every one I compared to the dress I had fallen in love with. My dream dress ended up being a classic plain satin dress, no lace in sight!

Family Affair

It was really important to us that our son felt that it was his big day too. He had a matching suit to his Dad’s and he was also in charge of the rings. We made the

THE DETAILS Photographer Bridle Photography Ceremony Venue The Crown Hotel Dress Courtyard Bridal Cake Bride and Groom’s Mums! Flowers Crystal Blooms

day extra special for him too by changing his surname to match ours. Our guests felt this was wonderful and made our day extra special. There weren’t many dry eyes in the house!

Bride's Advice

The best advice I received and would love to pass on is this; take some time to stand back and look at all your guests. It is once in a lifetime that these same people will be together in one room again, take the time to let in sink in and try not to let the day pass quicker then it already will.

aving children at your wedding is a personal choice - there is no right or wrong to it. If you opt for a familyfriendly wedding day, keeping little ‘uns occupied during the important moments can be a struggle, which is where Quayside Wedding Crèchers step in. Danielle and her team ensure that your small guests have a sensational day with games, creative play and lots of laughter. Fully qualified childcare practitioners make up the Wedding Crècher team with backgrounds ranging in teaching, entertaining, and childminding. It’s safe to say that these guys will take the best care of the children that attend your wedding. Each wedding is unique, from the venue to the individual needs of your guests, which is why Quayside Wedding Crèchers work closely with a bride and groom, as well as the venue itself, to create the best environment for a wedding crèche. Be it a marquee in a field, cliff top hotel or country manor, they will bring a fully stocked play zone, that kids

“Thank you so very much for your outstanding contribution to our wedding. Such happy children, happy parents and a faultless day. You really are so very good at your job and offer a sensitively thought out service to perfectly meet the needs of little people. Seeing the photos of you and Hetty brought a tear to my eye - absolutely beautiful.” “Quayside Wedding Crèchers put me at ease straight away with leaving my daughter in their care. My daughter warmed to Danielle right from the beginning, and she isn’t one for going to just anyone! Wedding Countdown □ Find your ceremony and reception venue, you’re lucky - Dorset has some incredible places! □ Book your Registrars if required. □ Discuss your vision for your day with your partner; it’s important that you both have the same goals in mind. There may be some differences of opinion, but working them out is part of the fun! □ Set a budget! Far less fun than the rest, but you need to be realistic about what you can afford - oh, and allow a 10% contingency as there will be times you need that! □ Make enquiries with suppliers like caterers, cake makers, florists, photographers, videographers and venue stylists - popular suppliers get booked up early so make sure you don’t delay! □ Use magazines (ahem), Facebook and Pintrest to find inspiration for your big day - also, good suppliers will be able to make suggestions based on your budget, vision and venue. □ Start shopping for your wedding dress. Try on as many as you need to, and don’t be afraid to try different styles, you might find something you initially dismiss is perfect for you! □ Pick your bridesmaids and groomsmen

□ Start thinking about your guest list. You may have an idea of numbers if you have venue restrictions, but now is the time to start thinking about specifics of day vs evening guests. □ If you are having a ‘DIY’ wedding, you’ll need to start on your stationery, centrepieces, and/or favours. Allow time for practice runs, as it might need a few goes to get right! □ Order your stationery if you are using a company to make them for you. □ Ring shopping time! There are loads of options you need to consider, so get looking! □ Traditionally, the hen and stag parties take place the week or night before the wedding, but nowadays most couples have them earlier. Weekends abroad, local nights out and relaxing spa days are all great ways to celebrate your last days as a maiden! □ Buy your veil, tiara or hat - they’ll influence how you have your hair styled on the day. □ Get your wedding shoes, as you;all need them for your dress fittings, plus you’ll want to ‘wear’ them in a little. □ So, how about those honeymoon plans?! Whether you are planning a getaway to a secluded beach, or a safari trip or escaping to a city start thinking about what you both want to do.

□ It’s time to send your invitations! Make sure you check the postage weight when you send them, and don’t forget to include a date for people to RSVP by. □ Order your wedding favours. these little mementoes can be as traditional or as quirky as you like; we’ve seen scratch cards, sugared almonds, charity pins, jam, cookies and tea cups! □ Attend a hair and make up trial. Go armed with ideas of what you like, what you hate and what your dress is like. Professional hair and make up can really help you feel your best, and give you time to calm down before the action get going. □ You will need to visit your registrar to pay your fee if you are having a civil ceremony. Make sure you have discussed things like readings, vow words and music before you go. □ Create a timetable for your day so you know what’s meant to happening when. It’s handy to pass out to your ‘maids, the ushers and venue staff, as they can keep an eye on timings. □ Discuss and decide if you are having a gift list. if you are, register with them and pick your preferred gifts. If not, how about asking for something towards your honeymoon and house.

□ Call and confirm all your suppliers - make sure they all know where they need to be and when. Also, if you can settle any invoices, as carrying a lot of cash of your wedding day is tricky! □ Have your final dress fitting - which means no more diets! You don’t want to have a baggy dress on your wedding day... □ Run through everyone’s duties with them. Some may not have been part of a wedding before, so giving them time to ask questions is vital. □ If you dye your hair, don’t do it too close to the wedding day, just in case the colour doesn’t take. Strong colours can also take a few days to settle so allow time for this. □ Have a date night with your finance! With all the wedding talk, it’s easy to forget to just be a couple. Enjoy being engaged...there’s not much time left! □ Finalise your seating plan. This can be one of the most stressful jobs, especially if there are family frictions. Allow lots of time to do it, and be prepared for a few versions. □ Don’t forget to get your Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed (that’s easy...) and Something Blue!
