appy 2016!
Welcome to the first issue of the year - we’re pretty excited to see what new trends brides are following. We predict more brides will be taking a creative approach to their big day, with crafts, DIY and Pinterest playing a big part in wedding day decor. When thinking about what goes in to each issue, we think about the process of planning a wedding from finding your venue to choosing your wedding rings, and what strikes us each time is just how important every detail is. A wedding is made up of lots and lots of details, and it’s how you put them all together that really makes your day unique. We share three wedding stories in each issue and what’s incredible is how different they all are!
Also in this issue we get top tips on your bridal look from expert hair and make up artists, sneak a peek at what’s hot for 2016 and have some moneysaving tips for those brides watching the pennies. We want to hear from you! Send your comments, stories and ideas to... love@somethingborrowedmagazine.co.uk

Back in Style A trend on the rise is embellished backs; if your back is your best feature, you’re in luck as there is a lot of choice out there for you. If you like the style but want to get in shape, we suggest pole dancing as a fun way to tone up back and arm muscles.

Decades
Wedding discussion is rife in the Something Borrowed office, and recently we started thinking about weddings over the decades, and how different they might have been from those that we see today. We decided that we would interview some couples that got married in each decade, starting with the 1950s, going right through to the noughties. This issue we chat to Dorothy about her 1954 wedding.
Roy & Dorothy Storey
were married in July.
How long was your engagement? Seven months. Roy proposed on Christmas eve and we
What was the date of your wedding? 3rd July 1954, the day after my 21st birthday. What was the approximate cost of your wedding? I don’t remember exactly, but I do know that our sit down three-course meal cost £110 for 102 people. Did you have any assistance with paying for the wedding? We followed tradition with this. Roy paid for the honeymoon and photographer, I paid for the taxis and flowers and my father and step-mother helped with the rest. Where was the wedding held? We wed in a small church in Coventry and had our reception at the New Inn.
Tell us about your wedding day. I remember the day before my wedding day, because it was my 21st birthday. I was at work until 6 pm that evening and when I got home, many of my relatives had arrived for the weekend. It was a full house that night, and the queue for the bathroom was a nightmare, even for a bride! I dressed early in the morning, my wedding dress had been made by Roy’s aunt - she had also made all five of the bridesmaids’ outfits too. Our ceremony was at 11am so we left quite early. It was a blustery day, and by the time I arrived at the church half of my bouquet had blown away! After the service, we all went to the hotel for a three-course dinner. We had a lovely roast chicken. At 4 pm Roy and I left for our honeymoon, as our flight was at 5 pm. I dressed in my ‘going away’ outfit and I remember when we walked to the plane people thinking I was someone famous - so I turned and gave them all a wave!

If you’re anything like us, you have everything but the kitchen sink in your bag. But on your wedding day, you’re unlikely to want to carry a giant bag around with you (no matter how on trend it is). Luckily, we’ve done the hard work and created your wedding day handbag checklist!

Childhood Sweethearts
Andy and I met at school, outside the nurse’s office waiting to go into science; my friend (and bridesmaid) Helen introduced us. We’ve been together for years, and we finally decided to tie the knot when we started working in the wedding industry. Seeing all the happy couples and amazing weddings made me really want my own! Apart from that it’s nice to be a family unit and it’s nice to call each other husband and wife. It was also special to have our boys there to see us get married. We actually got engaged 9 years ago when Andy hid an engagement ring in a Rolex box and gave it to me on Christmas eve. I thought ‘yes, I’ve finally got a Rolex!’ But no, it was even better! It was a gorgeous personally designed ring with a note (that I still have!) saying ‘Will you marry me???’ I was heavily pregnant with Thomas at the time and we had been together 10 years at this point,
and had just bought our 1st house. Then I had our second son, Timmy, and life kind of got in the way of planning a wedding.
All work and no play
We started A & D Mobile Bars, a mobile bar company, in 2013 and through that started to meet lots of wedding suppliers including Something Borrowed. Talking about weddings all the time just gave me lots of ideas, and when Farmer Palmer’s started offering weddings on their land, that was it - we wanted it there! Once we’d booked the venue, I went wedding dress shopping. I came across Courtyard Bridal and the rest was history! She is amazing. When I saw my dress, I hated the way it looked on the hanger! Till then I had tried on so many dresses that made me feel short and fat. My mum said ‘Try that dress on’ pointing at a hanger, and I refused but after a bit of cajoling I put it on and guess what? I fell in love with it!
T he Big Day
We were married on 25th July 2015 and it was just an amazing day it went so fast. The things I’m most grateful for was our fabulous photographer (Bridle Photography) who just managed to capture all the details. Looking through the photos months later, in cold, dark November, I was transported back to that day - worth every penny! Our day was fun relaxed and full of happiness and love.. I would not change any part of it. It was a dream come true.
From Bride to Bride
Get the best photographer you can afford, and if you can, a videographer. After the confetti has settled and the bills are paid, your photos and videos are going to last and last. Oh, and if you have the budget, get on the day wedding planners! These guys made the day run smoothly and to plan so all I had to do was have the best day of my life!
Entertaining
We wanted all of our guests to have a relaxed and fun day, so we had lots going on. Pimms and lawn games, Sumo suits, Football, Farmer Palmer popped up with the tractor & trailer, an ice cream van, a band and Pegasus Disco helped us party till closing!
Styling
Concept Flowers arranged our centrepieces, created our bouquets and my head dress. The marquee looked stunning, so elegant and natural. I also sourced some vintage ladders, which we used as a sweet bar and as our table plan. Our wedding arch was hired from DDH Wedding & Event Hire.

our wedding make-up is different to applying regular make up - it has to last all day and look photographically perfect in daylight as well as indoors. The best thing you can do is book a trial with a professional make up artist to make sure those photos are perfect. Having a pro in control takes the pressure off you on the day (imagine trying to do your eyeliner when you’re a ball of nervous energy!) and makes your morning more relaxed and fun.
Powder and Paint
Wedding Day make up in more than just putting on your everyday slap. Getting the right products, the right look and then maintaining it throughout your day is important in ensuring you don’t look back at your photos and think ‘Hey there, Coco the clown...’
Caroline Swaffield from Amazing Face Hair & Make Up talks us through how to prepare for your big day.
Compliment your Dress
Remember with that soft, romantic dress heavy smoky sexy make up is not going to compliment it. If you love this style, your make up artist will need to soften it slightly so that it works with the gown. Again, the same applies to your hair - if you choose a soft, boho, loose hair design, you will need to keep the make-up pretty and dewy, so that everything works in harmony.

Be Inspired
Look around for hair and make up inspiration, you can get great ideas from bridal magazines, Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram. Take them along with you to your hair and make up consultation to discuss with your hair and make up team.
Bags of Fun
In your bridal day bag you should have tissues (dab don’t drag if you have a few happy tear!) Lipstick and gloss - after meeting, greeting and eating it’s important to keep your lip products to hand to re-touch, especially after THAT first important kiss! Powder or blotters to remove shine, If you have room, eyeliner and blush to touch up at 6 pm for the evening fun!

The Big Day
On your wedding day morning wear a loose fitting, silky dressing gown and a loose vest to avoid red welts and strap marks on the shoulders. Ideally braless is actually best. Towelling dressing gowns can pull at the back of the hair and mess up a finished style, so again best to avoid.
Professional make up artist Tara Sanger shares her tips on being a picture perfect bride.
Any waxing should be done a few days beforehand to avoid red swollen puffy eyebrows and lips. Body lotions and perfumes popped on at least two hours before you get your dress on to avoid any puddling of chemicals and oils which can stain and yellow a beautiful dress.
O
n the lead up to the big day I would say it’s really important to work out a little routine for yourself. Get exfoliating once or twice a week and make sure you are using a moisturiser and removing all your makeup before bed. This will ensure your skins remains at its best and has that radiant glow on the day! This isn’t the time to start a whole new routine of cleansers and serums, creams and potions, as you don’t want to risk breaking out just before the day if they don’t agree with you. Also, this is a good time to get your make up trial done; I usually advise brides eight to twelve weeks before the day because it not only gives you a chance to see how the products work on your skin, but also because you are more likely to know the finer details with hair, accessories and flowers so we can make sure everything compliments each other well.

Maddie & Jamie All photography by Tim Churchill Photography www.tim-churchill.co.uk
Mi Amor
Jamie and I met nearly 6 years ago at a mutual friend’s birthday at the pub but only got together officially 2 years ago. We’d been together for a year when we went to Otivar in Spain for a holiday. We’d had a few too many cocktails at a cool little bar in the mountains when Jamie suddenly got down on one knee and proposed. It was my worst nightmare as it was in front of other people – but I didn’t hesitate in saying yes! We looked at dates first as I work in a school, so it had to be out of term time to fit in with the school holidays as I couldn’t face getting married on a Saturday and having to go back to work on the Monday – we wanted to go on Honeymoon! As far as planning went, Jamie chose the car as that was something important to him. He wanted me to be happy so left the majority of the planning to me but was always there to discuss anything significant and to support me when things got stressful.
Save the Date!
We had a slight hiccup with
our original date being double booked, so had to change to the week before, on August 8th 2015, but we were lucky and everything turned out perfectly - we had the sunniest day of the year! Other than that, we didn’t really have many issues when planning and were able to resolve everything together. The most important thing to us was the fact that we were getting married and making that commitment to each other and our son. It was amazing that we could share and celebrate it with so many people that we love and who care about us.
Pretty in Pink
Dress shopping was relatively stree-free - I chose the first dress I tried on! I had an idea in my head of what I wanted and just happened to walk past Wedding Time in Dorchester and there was the dress in the window! It also happened to be a subtle blush pink colour which was just perfect.
Just for You
If I had one piece of advice for brides, it would be always remember why you are getting married - it’s about you and your
partner and nothing else. I got super stressed in the months beforehand about the stupidest stuff! On the day I just enjoyed myself and didn’t let anything bother me. You have to let go of any little things that may go wrong or did go wrong. Our day was perfect because we got married and that’s what it’s all about!
Our Brilliant Suppliers:
My dress and the suits for the groom & his men were from Wedding Time in Dorchester. They were incredible – so professional and supportive but with a personal touch. They really made an impact on our wedding experience! Our photographer was Tim Churchill who I’ve known for quite a few years through mutual friends. Neither of us like having our photograph taken and I hate being the centre of attention so I knew straight away that Tim would be able to put us at ease. I hardly noticed him and we had so many guests saying how
30
impressed they were with his manner and his photographs. We were really impressed with the end results! We got married at St James’ Church in Poole. It’s where my parents got married and as soon as we walked in we knew it was the place for us too. Our reception was at The Sandbanks Hotel. Not only is the location stunning but they know exactly what they are doing - we knew we were in safe hands. I cannot say enough how incredible the service was from Sebastien and the rest of the team! We hired a 1949 Jaguar MK V from SuperWed Cars in Bournemouth. A beautiful car and fantastic service too. Our flowers and room decoration at The Sandbanks was supplied by Simply Flower. We met a
couple of times to discuss ideas and then I let Maria get on with it – she didn’t fail to deliver. The bridal party flowers were exactly what I wanted and the venue decoration was impeccable. For our evening entertainment we hired Party Dexx. The choice they give to have your own playlist of music is a great touch. Lucinda was so professional and our DJ Alan was awesome! We feel so lucky with who we chose with all of our suppliers. We knew we could put our trust in all of them and we really recommend them all!

Expert Advice M
ark Gerrard of Pegasus Disco has been a DJ and wedding host for 24 years. He has a lot of experience under his belt and can help guide you with your wedding music choices. Use this Q&A section as a guide to some of the questions that should be asking of your DJ prior to booking. How much do you charge? Difficult to answer as every Wedding is different, but expect to pay anything between £300 and £900 depending of time commitment and the services your DJ/ Wedding Host is providing. Can we meet? Yes, in fact I would recommend it. You are looking for people to help in the biggest day of your life and you need to know you can work with them in the months leading up to your Wedding day. It also gives me the chance to ask about your plans and make sure what I offer fits in with those plans. Do you know the venue? After over 20 years I have worked in a lot of venues around Dorset, but should it be a venue I am not familiar with I will arrange to visit it, ideally meeting with you at the same time. Do you take requests? Yes most definitely, I will not pretend to know yours or your guests taste in music without some form of interaction. I always
rard isco.co.uk Mark GerDisco - pegasusd Pegasus
issue an event guide to give me an idea of your taste in music along with what you don’t want played as well as asking for requests on the night. How did you come across the path of your vocation? I spent 18 years working for a company in Christchurch as a full –time DJ, and got regularly sent out to weddings. When I finally started working on my own I realised it was working at weddings that I enjoyed most. There is a very varied market, which I love. Why is it worth paying a bit extra for a good quality DJ? Because it is a very big part of the wedding, and the one which will stick to your guests mind once the wedding is over. Very few guests will fixate upon the colour of the flowers or the decoration on the tables, but if the party was good, then the wedding will be one to remember.
WEST Dorset in focus
Finding a wedding venue in Dorset is easy; we have such a wealth of beautiful beachside, countryside and town located venues. The Isle of Purbeck has all of this in spades - here are our top choices for this unspoilt part of our glorious county.

ways to save on your wedding day
1 2
Create a budget spreadsheet...and stick to it! Simple, but so many brides buy little ‘last minute’ items or pick up bargains in sales that they never use.
3 4 5
Choose a venue that suits your needs. All inclusive deals are perfect if you’re catering for smaller numbers on a budget (plus they’re much less work!), however, if you are looking to invite everyone you’ve ever met, you might want to look at venues that allow caterers in. A caterer will be able to offer flexibility, as well as have the staff to manage your guests.
Hog roasts and BBQs are a great way to feed a lot of people, if you’re on a smaller budget.
6 8 9 10
Ask your groomsmen to wear their own suits - you can buy matching ties to bring the look together. This works especially well if you have mismatched bridesmaids too! Have a single stem flower in stead of a traditional bouquet. The simplicity is very elegant. Most bridal shops have a end of season sale, dresses can be bought for a song!
A sweet cart or sweet table is a fab option as a favour.
Silk flowers can look just as lovely as the real thing; Balloon-A-Room have a new range of professionally arranged bouquets and centrepieces to hire.
Buy decorative items after Valentine’s Day or Christmas. You can pick up fairy lights, vases and pretty bits for a few pounds. The Little Sweet Cart are a tasty option!
Lose the stress on your wedding day!
11 12 13 14
How about asking guests to bring a cake and hold a cake competition?
Make the most of helpful friends and family - they can help make invitations, table plans, favours and bunting!
Plan a low-cost honeymoon for immediately after the wedding. Have your dream holiday to celebrate an anniversary instead.

Have a smaller cake on show, but order a slab cake as well, that way you’ll have a the beauty of a professional cake and all your guests will have a piece! Look at packages offered by companies - often, the more you book with one company the more likely they are to discount. Hiring rather than buying props and decorations is often a cheaper way to get the look you want.
Be up front about your budget, a supplier can help you better if they know what to work to.

Laura & Ash All photography by Alexandria Hall Photography www.weddingphotography-ah.com
Forever Love
Ash and I have known each other since we were young as Ash’s mum used to be my nursery teacher and our families knew each other quite well. We met again after he returned from studying at University in June 2009. We went for coffee on 12th June and have spent every day together since!
Chocolate and Diamonds Ash wanted to go to Bruges for his birthday so I wasn’t expecting him to propose really, as it was a trip for him! He took my ring (a gorgeous diamond and sapphire ring) across the channel and had it ready at most opportunities.

He actually did it on his 30th birthday after we’d been for hot chocolate and Belgian waffles!
Picture Perfect
The first thing we did was contact our friend Alexandria Hall, who is a commercial photographer and a wedding photographer. Ash went to school with her and I knew her from our extended group of friends. We had looked at photographs from a recent wedding she had photographed and knew she was ‘the one’. It was important to us to have a great relationship with our photographer as we wanted to

look and feel relaxed on the day! Our second photographer, who put together or amazing video was our friend Justin Glynn of Harbour Media. We did all of the planning together and that mattered to us, as the day is about both of you. You are entering this partnership together, so all of your ideas should be reflected on the day.
my dad and it turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year.
It was plain sailing really, other than the guest list… say no more!
My Nan had given me her father’s ship bell (from The St Helier), as I was to become part of the Bell family and to tie in with our theme. Ash’s dad restored it for us and we rang it after our ceremony, which was the first time it had been rung since New Year’s Eve in 1945.
The most important thing for us was making sure everyone felt included and part of our day. We were married on July 31st, but decided to hire Pennsylvania Castle the night before, so we could host an intimate family BBQ with my bridesmaids and the best man and of course, our photographer, so she knew the key people.
Continuing with the nautical theme, we went by rowing boat called ‘Great Ope’ (Portland Gig Club), from Portland Marina round to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy which was a great arrival. It was so lovely to have that half an hour to ourselves for everything to sink in and to live in the moment.
Love on the Ocean Wave
Our theme was to be married by the sea surrounded by loved ones, so Pennsylvania Castle was the ideal place for us. Staying over the night before made me feel so relaxed on the day – I was even sunbathing on the patio until 11am (we got married at 1pm)! We had a lovely breakfast outside cooked by
Something Blue
I found my dress by LouLou Bride before I was actually engaged! It came up as a sponsored advert on my friend’s blog and I instantly wondered where I could wear it to! As it was blue with a lemon petticoat I didn’t actually consider it as a wedding dress until I consulted Ash about it (yes he saw it prior
to the wedding) and his words were: “Well, why do you have to wear white?” So I ordered it six months after we got engaged and I didn’t even try on another dress. It was so perfect laced with tiny pearls and silver embroidery; I just didn’t want to take it off! I’ve decided to have it shortened to the knee so I can wear it again for future events.
Bridal Advice
My only advice would be, work together and don’t compromise on the things that matter most to you.
