ell, here we are. ‘Wedding’ season.
Saying that, is there such a thing as wedding season anymore? A recently as five or six years ago, weddings were either spring or summer, with a peppering of Christmas celebrations. Nowadays people have weddings all year round - and why not? We’re spoiled for venue choice in Dorset, and each one offers something unique; be it moody winter views over the harbour or lush green fields in spring. Whatever your personal choice you can find a venue that suits your perfect day. And hopefully we can help! What bride doesn’t look forward to choosing her wedding dress? And even if finding your gown is a little daunting, we can’t tell you how spectacular the feeling is when you try on ‘the one’. In this issue we have a look at different dresses available locally, because this dress is one of the most important things you’ll buy.
Since he or she put a ring on it, your engagement ring has sat proudly on your finger, but when it comes to choosing one to sit next to it, the options can be confusing. Read our wedding ring buyers guide for help! Take care and see you soon,
Eleanor xox

Choosing bridesmaids can be a minefield. You need to pick the people you can rely on - after all, these girls (and sometimes boys) are the ones to support, help and soothe on a very important day! When it comes to selecting dresses for your bridal party, you need to keep a clear head. There are so many styles and colours it can get a bit overwhelming. Visiting a shop rather than shopping online will mean you get a feel for the true colour, fabric and cut of a dress. The time of year you are getting married can help you pick a colour theme; rich colours work well in Autumn and Winter and pastel shades are lovely in Spring and Summer.

Beth & Josh All photography by Starlight Photography
Puppy Love
We first met through a friend of mine who went to college with Josh. The moment I saw him I was a lovestruck 16 year old! I’d see him around and say hello and eventually a friend gave me his number so I text him and the rest is history, as they say. After a mere (!) 15 years together Josh asked me to marry him - it was so worth the wait! We’d gone to Padstow for a Christmas/ New Year break with friends for a week (they were in on the plan). We all went to a local pub for a drink after dinner at the cottage, it was a lovely little pub by the harbour which Josh thought would be a nice, quiet place to propose on a Sunday evening, but when we arrived the place was packed!
In the name of love
I remember now that our friends were acting really strangely; we had to sit around the piano in the end and as soon as a table became available they all rushed over to it. One of our friends tasks was to suggest playing the name game, but that being my favourite game I already said ‘hey, let’s play the name game!’. Instead of a
well-known celebrity, Josh put ‘marry me’ on my head. Everyone went along with my questions, as if I had person’s name on my head, until I was the last one who hadn’t guessed mine. Josh asked if I gave up and as I removed the paper and saw ‘marry me?’, Josh got down on one knee with the most stunning ring. It really was the best proposal for me, I was on top of the world!
Making plans
We both wanted a really relaxed, informal day and the Manor Farm in Studland was exactly the kind of venue for us. As my Dad lives in Studland, it made it even more perfect. I genuinely enjoyed planning our wedding; I decided to get organised early, which helped avoid stress! I think the thing I found the most stressful was decorating the venue. I knew how I wanted it to look, but not being a very creative person myself, I struggled to know how much of everything we needed. My bridesmaids, Josh and our families helped so much with this though, and in the end the venue looked better than I
could of imagined.
Wedding dress: Mission accepted
From the start I knew I wanted a backless wedding dress. I used the internet to research backless wedding dresses, and the very first dress that came up was just what I wanted. The second store we went to was a lovely little boutique in Islington. As luck would have it, they stocked the dress from my picture! I couldn’t believe it, but, as she was getting it, I looked at the price tags on their other dresses and with a sinking feeling, realised they were all well over my budget. No matter how much I loved the dress, there was no way I could afford it! I still tried it on - it really was perfect. As we were talking to the sales assistant, she mentioned that the dress was actually for sale, as an ex-sample. It needed cleaning and taking in professionally (it was about three sizes too big) but that would make it far more affordable! I used a local seamstress to adjust the dress, and you’d never know.
Sunshine and blue skies
We both wanted an informal day; we’d been together for 15 years and just wanted to celebrate with all our family and friends. When we had booked our venue, we knew it was a gamble with the weather as most of the day was outdoors. Luckily it was beautiful weather. We had our ceremony in Swanage Town Hall, followed by the reception at Manor Farm. We had two great musicians; Finnian to start and Jim Etherington for the evening they were both awesome! The whole day was just so much fun we were both grinning from ear to ear all day long. Looking back on our amazing photos taken by Starlight Photography, there isn’t one picture of either Josh or I, or our family and friends not smiling! Phil really captured the feel of the whole day and looking back on them it shows how much fun everyone had! There were plenty of prosecco hangovers the next day which meant we had achieved the party we wanted. The day was over so quickly, I just wish we could do it all again!

Heavy Metal You can choose from many different precious metals for your wedding ring. Yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum. Each has its own trait; yellow gold is well suited to a more traditional bride and groom. A 9 or 18 carat gold is better suited to daily wear, as it’s harder, and therefore more durable. White gold is more contemporary and is growing in popularity. It’s worth bearing in mind, however, that white gold is plated with rhodium and with constant wear, this will need to be renewed. Forum Jewellers offer a re-plating service, which is recommended annually. Rose gold has a pink look to it, and has seen a surge in popularity (probably thanks to Michael Kors and his watch collection...). Its copper content gives this metal a warm hue. Platinum is a rare precious metal, with a bright silver appearance. It is highly durable, which won’t tarnish, discolour or cause allergic reactions. The best way to pick a metal for your band is to match it to your engagement ring. Don’t forget to also match the carat of the gold, to ensure both rings sit together without causing damage.
The Fit Wedding rings come in a variety of profiles. The profile is the shape of the band, when viewed side-on. These are; D-shaped - like the name suggests, this is shaped like the letter D. Its flat on the inside and rounded on the outside. Traditional court - this is rounded on both sides. Slight court - this has a flat appearance. Flat court with flat edge - this is the reverse of the D shaped. Flat court - a flat outside with a curved inside.

All that glitters Many people like to have embellishment to their wedding ring. For those brides that favour a bit of sparkle this could be by adding diamonds set either around the whole band or across the top half of the band. An alternative embellishment is having the band engraved with a pattern, or with modern laser engraving entwined hearts, dates or initials can be added. Forum Jewellers offer free engraving of the date of your wedding inside your chosen ring.

Jet-Set Romance Emma-Louise is having her wedding abroad - read on for her planning experience...
A
s an events coordinator, I have plenty of experience planning weddings in the UK. I could probably do it with my eyes closed these days. Which is why I think some of our friends and family were a little shocked when my fiancé Ed and I decided to go abroad for our wedding next September. Getting married abroad, it turns out, is completely different from in the UK, and so I quickly found myself out of my depth. I didn’t actually know where to start. We picked our destination fairly easily. Santorini is a Greek island, and is absolutely stunning and will provide the perfect backdrop for our special day. Going from there was a little harder.
30
By having a destination wedding, we are not able to get carried away as we won’t be able to take much along with us on the plane. In other words, I can’t try and have everything I’ve seen on Pinterest, which means that the little touches we do add will make more of an impact. I am excited to be taking a step into the unknown and getting married abroad. It has led to another area of wedding planning for me and one that I can experience for the first time with my fiancé and our families. Here’s to the adventure!
Photo by Tim Churchill Photography www.tim-churchill.com
Luckily for us, we actually managed to win part of our wedding through a competition with Perfect Weddings Abroad. We decided to upgrade our prize and book their full wedding package, which means that most of the planning will be taken care of by their dedicated and experienced team. As somebody in the industry myself, I am relieved to know that our wedding is in good hands and it is actually nice to be able to sit back and relax a bit for the time being. It also means I can concentrate on all the ‘fun’ parts of the planning, like bulk buying sunglasses for our guests and finding the perfect dress, although that will come with its own challenges as I will need to factor in the heat when shopping!
Getting married abroad also means that we have been limited to the number of people we can invite. Although we do plan to have a celebration back home afterwards, for the actual wedding we can only have 25 guests and that includes children. There is something liberating about having to stick to strict numbers, it means that only our very closest family and friends are able to come, and this will make the wedding that little bit more special for us and those joining us.

Expert Advice When it comes to planning your wedding day menu, there are so many options it can make your head spin! We sat down with the team at Signature Catering to ask what advice they had for couples planning their wedding day feast. Firstly, who are you and why are you experts?! We’re a team of chefs and caterers that have been preparing food for weddings for over X years. We also manage restaurants in various local attractions, so we’ve got a lot of experience in delivering food to a lot of people! What kind of questions do you get asked the most? Couples want to know whether we can prepare restaurant quality food in different locations; from fields to draughty castles to stately homes. The answer is yes! We either set up a kitchen at the venue, or we use our catering kitchen and transport the food to be finished off on site. They want to know if they should offer a variety of options to their guests or just have a set menu that people like or lump. This is really down to personal choice offering more choices adds to your admin time (keeping track of who ordered what), plus time on the day as people often forget what they ordered. It can add to the cost, but it doesn’t have to, if the dishes take a similar amount of preparation time and have similar value. If you do opt for a single choice, we advise making it a ‘crowd pleaser’. You may love swordfish steak, but it’s unlikely that your guests will, and it
Catering Signature cateringco.co.uk signature
comes down to either you having the food you personally want and watching a lot go to waste, or having a meal that the majority of guests will enjoy and fill up on. If you have a particular favourite, we have been asked to prepare a different dish for the Bride and Groom - so it’s not impossible! What advice can you give to a couple who are on a tight budget? First of all, be realistic about what you can afford. If you have a figure in mind, we can usually find a solution to make it work. The rise of outdoor wedding venues means that external caterers have a little more freedom to offer flexibility. BBQs and hog roasts are a great option if you need to keep costs down. The best advice we can give is meet with a caterer and ask to see testimonials, photos and even actual dishes they have prepared. We welcome people to talk to us, you can book a consultation on 01425 477665.

Pick a design to encompass the day. It defines what your wedding style will be and the first insight to formality of the wedding: you should have an idea of what you want, be it classic & elegant, or casual & rustic. Order extra! Bulk orders are not only cheaper, but easier in long run for those extra guests you think of or if you want to bump someone from evening only to all day. Traditionally who is hosting is listed first & a request line – ‘so & so request the honour of your presence’. Be careful with the rest of the details. Resist the temptation to over crowed the card – include only key points – time, place, host, couples name, dress code (optional) and RSVP info. Too much is hard to read and inelegant! The tough part for many couples is deciding who is ‘hosting’. It does come down to preference, but if following tradition, the Bride’s parents are named at the top; Mr and Mrs John Smith request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter but you can have it anyway you like. More and more couples are ‘hosting’ their own weddings, so in this instance, you put your own names at the top; Callum Holt and Lisa Brown request the pleasure of your company at their marriage

Teenage Dream
I met Mark through friends. We were at the Wimborne Folk Festival, and I was introduced to him. We stayed in touch when I moved away for university and on the day of my very last exam he came to stay for a week, and from then on we were an item.
All I want for Christmas
Mark ordered my ring from Etsy. I have a somewhat ‘eclectic’ taste and Mark knew traditional rings weren’t my style. He chose a recycled silver and white topaz ring engraved with leaves and flowers, which I adore. Mark’s original proposal plan was quite elaborate and he was too impatient to wait! Instead he put the ring in my Christmas stocking and when he passed it to me, said ‘There’s something in there for you’ and left the room to use the bathroom! As I opened the stocking, a little kraft paper box fell out and inside was my ring.
Running away...at home
We are videographers at our company Digital Bohemia, so we have a lot of contacts in the
business, so we had a better idea than most to start us off. We’re not religious, so a church wedding wasn’t on the table. Pagan ceremonies are more in line with our beliefs, so we began planning a big woodland wedding, where all of our friends and family could join us. The more we planned, the more we realised that we needed lots of time to save - especially since we also started saving to buy a house. Months passed, and even though we were happy with being engaged, we had a conversation about how much we wanted to be married. On the anniversary of our engagement
Mark made a crazy suggestion; What if we eloped? He asked me if I’d marry him in a secret ceremony, just us and two witnesses on February 29th 2016 - the leap year. I loved the idea!
Secret Squirrels
So we planned our secret wedding. It was to be low key and private. We booked the smallest room at Bournemouth Registary office and I asked my best friend to visit from London. I didn’t even tell her why. Mark, unbeknownst to me, asked two of our friends from the wedding industry to help out. Keith, from
Bridle Photography, flew back from his trip in LA early so he could take photos and Lauren, from Concept Flowers, created the most incredible dreamcatcher bouquet for me. On the day, Holly, my friend from London arrived so we set off to see Caroline, from Amazing Face, to have my make up done. As we got out of the car at Caroline’s studio, I said to Holly, ‘We’re just here to get my make up done, because we’re going to get married this afternoon’. She was so excited, and was glad she’d worn a decent dress! We arrived at the Town Hall and Keith was there to greet us, I was
so surprised, since he was meant to be in LA. He couldn’t join us as we said our vows because the room was so small; it was just Me, Mark, Holly and Danny Edwards, from Cult 13 Tattoo. Danny’s become a really good friend, and we asked him to be a witness. After 20 minutes, we were married! As we left the Town Hall, we were surprised by a couple of friends who I’d told; they threw confetti on me and presented us with a vegan wedding cake decorated with the Corpse Bride. It was perfect. We headed over to the gardens for some photos, and then went to lunch in Westbourne.
Instead of traditional wedding rings, we had Pagan rune symbols for love tattooed on our ring fingers by Danny. We left our friends and headed to a cabin in the countryside, where we spent the evening drinking gin, playing board games and dancing. The following evening we were meant to be going for a quiet meal, but Mark had one last surprise. A group of our friends join us for the evening. It was a beautiful wedding day, and I love how ‘us’ it was. We’re now planning our woodland wedding, where everyone can be there, but for now, we’re just enjoying being Mr and Mrs.

f you’re planning an outdoor wedding, one of the important details to consider is a less than elegant one...when in the depths of nature, where will your guests answer the call of nature? Our fully mobile toilet units are the answer! Each unit is fitted out to a high spec; including hot running water, flushable toilets, large mirrors, heaters and baby changing facilities - you can even have music playing through the sound system on board! We’ve often been compared favourably to high-end hotel lavatories, so we know that our customers are happy with the quality of our units and service. We’re able to deliver and set up all over Dorset, Hampshire and the surrounding areas, from private residences to fields and event showgrounds. ww.luxurylittlerooms.co.uk
Here are a few of our frequently asked questions: What’s included in the hire? Delivery and collection, set-up and testing plus consumables including luxury soaps, moisturisers, loo rolls, hand towels plus a 24 hour customer telephone hot-line, should you need to contact us urgently. Our units arrive fully stocked and ready to use once set up on site. How do they run? We just need a power source - either a plug socket or connection to a generator. Where will the toilets go? They are mobile so they can be positioned to suit your requirements- as long as there is space for manoeuvring to deliver and collect them. Can a toilet be built into a marquee? Absolutely! This is a particularly good idea during the winter. As all marquees are different, we would advise that your marquee company/event manager contact us to run through your requirements. If you are looking to add that final finishing touch of “Luxury” to your special day or event, we look forward to hearing from you and providing the service of our “Little Rooms”.

O
n a chilly day in March, Tiaras By Becky founder and head designer, Becky Fletcher, gathered a team together at Home Farm house, a gorgeous vintagestyled accommodation which is available to hire for the weekend of your wedding. The team created a styled photoshoot showcasing the latest items in the Tiaras By Becky collection. “Although classic tiaras are still a popular choice, we’re seeing an increasing demand for elegant lace headdresses. We’ve created our new range, which is vintageinspired, to give brides even more choice on their wedding day.’ Pieces start from just £15 for hair accessories.
Swarovski pearl brooch bouquet. This intricate and elaborate piece will be a distinctive addition to your wedding day outfit, as well as a lifelong keepsake. One bride, who bought a handmade brooch bouquet from Tiaras By Becky for her wedding said; “I fell in love with this bouquet when I saw Becky at a fair. We’ve worked together to come up with a design that fits my colour scheme, so it’s going to look perfect with my dress. My mum also suggested that I make this a tradition by passing it on to my daughter when she gets married one day, which I thought was a lovely idea!” You can view the whole range of hair accessories, dress adornments, brooch bouquets and tiaras online at www.tiarasbybecky.co.uk
