My proposal really well as saying goodbye. shouldn’t have been a One evening the family shock, as Richard and I suggested a walk along have been talking about a promenade, which getting married for a being pregnant in the while, but when he got heat didn’t really appeal, down on one knee, I was but I said I’d go anyway stunned - and not just at (there were some nice the diamond size! cool shops to look in!).

It wasn’t quite the smooth proposal Our life is a bit hectic As we were walking, Rich had planned, but it at the moment, as we’re Rich asked if we could was romantic and very expecting a baby in walk along a jetty, I was us (a bit chaotic haha!). utumn is such a rich, colourful time of year, with the early autumn still benefitting from the warmer weather and later in to the year offering lovely crisp days.

Autumn dresses are taking a classic elegant twist with Benjamin Roberts showcasing the timeless strapless gown. For brides looking for a showstopping dress, Benjamin Roberts is certainly a designer to consider. Courtyard Bridal have recently acquired this incredible collection, and we are huge fans!

If you’re after a dress that just exudes glamour and elegance then visit Wedding Time in Dorchester to try on a Stella York. These extraordinary dresses will make any bride feel like a princess on her big day.

Affordable luxury can be found in All Aspects’ range of Phoenix Gowns. This British based company has dresses to suit all brides-to-be.

Something as gorgeous as this drop neckalce or the matching earrings would make a memorable and elegant gift for your bridesmaids. This Fiorelli bracelet is a headturner, perfect for a bit of subtle sparkle! www.forumjewellers.co.uk

Headwear is becoming an essential part of the wedding day outfit, and in Dorset we’re lucky to have the talent that is Tiaras by Becky. Each head piece is hand made, so you can be as elaborate or simple as you like. Current trends are favouring the vintage look, with the 20s having a big influence on style. Draping crystals, delicate lace and sumptuous pearls all work together to create incredible accessories that finish off your wedding day look. www.tiarasbybecky.co.uk

Once your dress is sorted then it’s time to think about the rest of your wedding party. If you are having bridesmaids, then autumnal hues will create a beautiful, rich palate to work with. Fab Frocks of Westbourne have a huge selection of dresses to choose from, but we’re liking these opulent colours. Purple is a luxurious colour, one often associated with royalty. As well as being flattering with most skin-tones, it’s also versatile when it comes to pairing with other colours; useful when planning your bouquet! Wine red conjures images of long, cosy evenings with a roaring fire. If you are having a late autumn wedding, then this gorgeous colour is certainly worth considering. Teamed with a faux fur shrug, there’s no end of glamour in this look.

Perfectly Pretty Weddings can create the right ambience for your big day with their vast range of stock and incredible talent. These guys also provide chair covers and sashes too! www.perfectlyprettywedding.co.uk

Instead of traditional white or ivory, Benjamin Roberts has this gorgeous dress in ‘soft gold’. This colour really flatters a warmer skin tone.

Natalie & John All photography by their lovely guests!

How did you two meet? We met at school, I was the lead part in a school production of Bugsy Malone and John was in charge of all the sound and lighting. He said that I caught his eye and he asked me on a date! We chatted for weeks and weeks and then John said he would like to learn to ballroom dance. I, of course, said I would be his partner and that was it, he asked me out a few days later. How, when & where did the proposal happen? John had always said that once we lived together he would ask me. I moved in on the Wednesday and on the Sunday (4 days later) we had a huge family BBQ to welcome them to our new home and bravely he did it in front of everyone we know! What was the first

17

thing you booked? The vicar and the church was the first thing we booked. We had our heart set on the church that John was baptised in so wanted to make sure we could get married there, as well as checking they had the date available that we’d chosen. We were so happy when it all worked out! How did you tackle planning your wedding? I bought myself a wedding planner book and googled online - I am a real list person so I made lots of lists of the things I needed to do and when, then I made a count-down to check that I didn’t miss anything! What was most important to you? That we made sure that everyone had lots to do and that there were never any dull moments or waiting around. We had our wedding in three different locations; we started off at the church, we had our wedding breakfast at Pizza Hut (yep, really!) and then went to the Chine Hotel for our reception. We had a big red London bus to get people around and when we arrived at our evening reception we had a caricature artist,

18

a magician, a sweet cart and Photobooth Bournemouth so there was no time for standing around. What details/finishing touches did you have? I really liked the rustic ideas for wedding décor, so I looked at lots of ideas on Pinterest. We had lanterns and lots of logs with candles on, lots of flowers and different things for our guests to sign (book and a finger print tree). John also runs a photobooth, so that was obviously a big part of the festivities! What was the most memorable moment? The most memorable

moment was our first dance; with John being a lifeguard I had asked all the lifeguards to hold up their rescue tubes for us to walk under, and we had one of my dad’s favourite songs and surprised everyone with a leap frog right in the middle, everyone laughed so much! What would you change? We would only change the amount of time that we spent together. We had such a great time with our guests and spent all day walking around talking and dancing that the day went by so quickly that we hardly spent any time together.

Grooming the groomsmen T

he girls make a day of it - Why not the boys? When it comes to the big day, instead of twiddling your thumbs all morning, why not treat your groomsmen to a sharpening up session as well? Look the part...

Your suit is just as important as the bride’s dress. If you feel well dressed then you’ll be able to stand proud at the top of the aisle, waiting for your future wife. All Aspects in Bournemouth stock a wide range of groomswear that will make you feel dapper.

Groomsmen: How to prepare yourself for the big day (and night) A wet shave at home with a visit from a traditional barber will get you and the groomsmen looking dapper for the day. The ladies get the hair and makeup treatment, so it’s only fair you boys get something done so you’re feeling particularly smart on the day.

Refreshments gentlemen

Treat yourself and the boys to some special occasion beers - only one or two of course.

Nibbles and canapés...man style Man canaps up with some miniature burgers and beer shots to settle any nervous stomachs. This is an alternative to the type of champagne breakfast the girls have.

Show you care

This might be the right time to give your groomsmen a small token of your appreciation. How about a ‘Broquet’? A fun basket-like bundle of man gifts such as drinks, cufflinks (like the one pictured from Forum Jewellers) and gadgets maybe something meaningful as well.

Claire and Andy decided that 10 years after they first tied the knot, they would renew their vows in a beautiful second wedding. Claire tells us about her weddings, then and now.

O

ur first wedding was at the Mansion House in Poole (now Hotel du Vin). It was very intimate with just Andy and I, our parents, siblings and my Nanna & Grandpa. We also had Finlay then who was 3 at the time. He was best man! We were originally going to get married in Mauritus, and it was all booked, but I changed my mind because I couldn’t bear the thought of getting married without our families present. Fortunately we were able to change it and we transferred our booking to our honeymoon in Antigua. We got married on our one year anniversary of getting together. Since the wedding was so tiny there wasn’t too much to do! We booked the Mansion House and registrar as soon as we knew we could transfer our abroad wedding to a honeymoon! I had already ordered my dress, so that was it really.

30

What was most important was just being together. The material stuff just didn’t seem to matter; we wanted to be able to be next to each other the whole time. It was essentially a big posh meal with a quick wedding ceremony beforehand! Although it was small, we wouldn’t change anything about our original day, it was perfect. Ten years later, I really wanted our marriage blessed in church as we’d only had a civil ceremony originally.

Andy thought it would be a lovely idea and so, a decade and three more children later, I was a bride again. For us, the most important part of the day was for the people who have been an important part of our married lives, to witness us affirming we were still as much in love now as we were then, and to celebrate our family we had created together. We are lucky that we are part of the Wimborne Parish so we were able to be

blessed in The Minster. Our Rev’d, Belinda Marflitt, was just wonderful and totally connected with us and wrote us the most beautiful ceremony. This time we planned our day with plenty of time! We researched venues and hotels that would fit our budget and visited them and spoke to their wedding planners to get a feel for what they could offer us. Of the whole day, our most memorable moment for both of us was walking down the aisle together. When you renew your vows, you enter the church together. We had our bridesmaids (my sister Sarah, and our good friends Michelle and Natalie) walk in first with our childrenFinlay 13, Archie 9, George 6 and ElizaLily 2, and we walked behind. We felt so proud of our gorgeous family. It’s a moment that will stay with us for a long time.

Has marriage changed us? I’d say that marriage has made us a team - us against the world! You have to put the effort in at all times and there’s this silent knowledge that you know you always have the support of someone, even when things aren’t going to plan! It’s a feeling of security which is a lovely thing to have. My advice to couples planning their big day is set yourself a reasonable budget that you know is

manageable and give yourselves plenty of time to plan, research and book. It took us 18 months to plan our renewal. Try and deligate smaller tasks where you can to family and friends that are immediately involved, but don’t expect people to drop everything for you - it’s just one day that is supposed to be happy!! Try and enjoy the planning and do it together. It doesn’t need to be stressful.

Expert Advice Hi Hayley, We love Sweetcheeks Bakehouse! You’ve been making cakes for 4 years, so you probably know a thing or two about how a couple can get the most from their consultations and ultimately make a decision on what kind of cake to have for their big day. [Hayley on meeeting a cake maker] When meeting a cake maker you should have a rough idea of what you would like. Take along anything that may be useful i.e. swatches, pictures, scrapbooks etc, also let us know what flowers you are having, the venue, the design of the dress. Anything we can take inspiration from. Let your designer guide you through your design, but be brave and choose something that makes a statement about you both; this can be fun and quirky, to elegant and sophisticated your cake should say something about who you are. Every good cake designer should offer a tasting session, this is where you get to try lots of flavours and work out what would suit you. If you plan to serve your cake as dessert go for a more ‘pudding’ flavour cake. [Hayley on making wedding cakes] The biggest issue every cake maker has is the cost. Yes, you can buy a ready made cake from a local superstore for half the price possibly but a good cake maker will make your cake the week of your wedding, not weeks before thus requiring many additives. They will also use high quality ingredients such a butter and free range eggs, rather than a pre-mix batter. A day is spent baking the cake, the following day filling and stacking it, the next day icing

Bakehouse Sweetcheeksheeksbakehouse.co.uk www.sweetc

it, and then the day after that, putting it all together and adding the decorations! These alone can take on average 8 hours to create, in addition to the cake itself. It’s best to remember that you are paying for something individual to you and knowing it has been made with skill, hard work and dedication. No supermarket can compare to that! [Hayley on Sweetcheeks Bakehouse] My business has grown steadily over the last few years and I’m now making cakes for 70 plus weddings a year. It’s just me and I’m proud of what I do. I have worked hard to perfect the recipes I use, and I’m constantly mastering new techniques to keep up with trends. I feel very lucky and honoured to have won the Dorset Wedding Supplier Award for ‘Wedding Cake Maker’ in 2014, which was a massive boost of confidence and a reflection of my hard work and the dedication I give to each couple that I work with. It gives me great pleasure setting up a couples wedding cake, as I feel part of their special day and that they have chosen me - it is the best feeling in the world. It’s long hours, mostly in to the night some months, but it’s so worth it. Who can say their job makes people happy every week? Not many, but I can say that, and that means the world.

Hannah & Dean All photography by Samantha Davis Photography www.samanthadavisphotography.co.uk

How did you two meet? We met at a very young age of 14 at The Opera House (Boscombe) on an under 18’s night in the school summer holidays. How, when & where did the proposal happen? Dean proposed on our 15 year anniversary. He took me for a picnic after work at sunset in the New Forest. Tell us about planning the wedding. We had 2 years to plan our perfect day. We wanted it to be as close to our anniversary as possible. We saw a few venues that we really liked, but still felt the need to look further. I had heard Durlston Castle was offering weddings, so we popped along to have a look as I personally have lots of fond childhood memories of Durlston and we spend a lot of time riding our bikes over the Purbecks (we always like to think of the Purbecks as our playground). At the time there was

an art exhibition in the gallery so we couldn’t quite picture how it would work and if all the guests would fit in. So, a few weeks later we attended the BIC wedding Fayre and met Polly. Polly showed us pictures of previous weddings and invited us to go along and let her show us around and explain our options.

again once I tried on the one I eventually chose, I just knew that was the one I wanted.

From there we booked a fabulous big house on the other side of town that would accommodate both families and we could also have a gathering the day after with all our family and friends.

The suits were from a small business recommended to us locally and from there we also got the bridesmaids dresses. Everything else seemed to be little ideas from Pinterest, which I got totally carried away We fell in love with the Our photographer and with at times but I don’t venue and from that florist were friends in know what I would moment knew this was the business (personally have done without it! where we wanted to I would say the best at get married. whole build up that the weather wouldn’t be nice even though it wouldn’t have really mattered but on the day it was perfect. Every time we visited Durlston we would look out for the pod of dolphins which live in the bay beside the castle but they never appeared. On the day they made and an appearance just as were were finishing our group photos so you can imagine everyone’s excitement as we watched them for 15 minutes or so. Are you going on a honeymoon? We went to B.C. Canada. We booked flights and car hire in advance and

about a week before provisionally booked some accommodation on booking.com so that if we changed our route for whatever reason, then we could cancel and go wherever we fancied. It truly was our dream honeymoon. Plus we saw more dolphins, Orca and Humpback Whales. Venue: Durlston Castle is organised by Polly @ Blue Bay events www.bluebayevents.co.uk I had a Sophia Tolli dress from Special Occasions in Parkstone Poole. Gina was amazing. We had a naked Victoria Sponge with fresh fruit and Roses (it was to die for) from Love Cake in Swanage. Our friend, Sam Davis, was the hotographer and the photos speak for themselves. The band were The Falltones and so many people commented on how good they were. Florist was Poppies florist in Kinson. Sam and Kim are so lovely. Bridal Hair was by Natasha Crawley.
