Love with Pride Martin & David’s Story

Say Cheese! Rob and I met in Nottingham whilst we served in the Army together. We wanted something different for our wedding and chose this delightful “Cheese Tower decorated with fruits and flowers. The phrase that stuck with us about Roberto is "it's your day, I can do whatever you want." And he embraced our ideas!

Holly’s Wedding Planning

Whilst on holiday in Fiji in November 2014, my boyfriend Martin proposed - and I said YES and we set the date for May 2016.

for the groomsmen.

Knowing the style I wanted for my dream dress, I made an appointment with Mojan Bridal Boutique as I felt I immediately knew I sure from seeing their wanted some 50’s Rock range of dresses that and Roll style dresses for they would be able to my four bridesmaids. I produce the exact dress I contacted a dressmaker was looking for. I knew and whose work The team at Mojan I had seen - Chantelle could not have been Sophia - and explained more patient, helpful or exactly what I wanted. accommodating. They’ve Chantelle produced helped me customise a some initial sketches of dress until it was just different dress designs perfect. and together with my bridesmaids we met I decided that I wanted with her to view them bridal button bouquets and decide on a design rather than flowers, and we were all happy felt that I would be able with. I also agreed with to make these myself, Chantelle for her to which would make them make some fur shrugs more special. Everyone and also the waistcoats joined in collecting

buttons in all shapes and sizes! Martin and I visited some venues where we could hold our wedding ceremony and reception. After looking at various options we decided on Merley House, and luckily for us, they were able to offer us the exact date we wanted. I contacted Tiaras by Becky and made an appointment to go over some designs for hair/ head pieces for myself and my bridesmaids. Together we looked over various designs and Becky certainly knew what would work well and fit with the various elements of our outfits, so I was confident in my final choice.

L ove A s far as we are concerned, being married is about celebrating love and union, and we don’t give a hoot who you marry, so long as you’re happy and you make your partner happy. We were obviously delighted when same sex marriage became legally recognised earlier this year, however, it was a long time coming and many gay people were deprived of, what we consider, a human right. Anyway, it got us thinking about the long history of gay rights, so we thought we’d delve a little deeper and give you all a potted history…followed by a love story spanning over two decades. Gay Rights in the UK have evolved dramatically over time, with the most recent changes being eagerly welcomed by many. But before society, and the media, were so open-

with

P ride

minded, there was a act passed that stated that a local authority must not ‘promote’ homosexuality or publish material that promotes homosexuality or promote acceptance of homosexuality in families. How’s that for making you feel ostracized? Section 28, as the act was known, was introduced by the Thatcher government in the late 80s, conversely Maggie was a supporter of legalising homosexuality (yep, it was illegal to have feelings!) earlier in her political career, but performed an aboutface in 1987, attacking “positive images” of gay people during a speech, saying she worried that “Children are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay.” Well, duh. Thankfully, Section 28 was repealed in 2003, and in 2009, David Cameron apologised on behalf of the party, saying it was “a

mistake” to introduce the legislation. In 2004 significant progress was made when the civil partnership act was passed by the Labour government; this gave homosexual couples the same rights and heterosexual couples in the UK, albeit under a different name. However, by segregating the two, it was still a far-cry from equality, which is why, when in 2013, the coalition government unveiled the same sex marriage bill on 25th January, many were hopeful for the freedom to love it promised. The bill was passed on June 26th, and the UK, along with 18 different countries finally recognised same-sex marriage as on a par with boy-girl marriage. We, for one, were delighted to see many couples who had married under the civil partnership deciding to formalise their union again with a traditional marriage ceremony.

Martin & David All photography by County Photographic

David is a District and Town Councillor for Dorchester Town North Ward and Fundraiser Team leader for the Dorset County Museum. They recently had success following a huge effort made possible by the determination of the fantastic team David works with. Under the Directorship

18

of Jon Murden, the Dorset History and Archeological Society Board have managed, after 2 long hard years, to secure a £10.4 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Funding Application. The heat is on to raise £3 million to match fund, but the team are ‘on the case’ as they say!

Martin is Principal Pharmacist at Dorset County Hospital . We chatted with David about his wedding plans, and just how he felt about becoming a husband after years of campaigning for the right.

How did you meet Martin? We met on June 3rd 1998 in the Royal Oak in Dorchester. I was asked to look after him for the day, it turned out to be a great day indeed. And then... We were civil partnered in 2006 on

the anniversary of our meeting at Birkin House. It was a glorious hot weekend; we had 84 guests for the wedding breakfast and hundreds in the evening! It was an absolutely fabulous day .

What does the change from civil partner to husband mean to you? Equality and order. I did get a bit fed up of saying ‘my civil partner’ when referring to Martin. It sounded so hollow. Now after 17 years, being able to say ‘my husband’ is incredible. It’s the word I have wanted to say for a very long time.

Did either of you change your last name? No, as it did not seem necessary at the time. It can be very complicated but we are thinking of doing it now. What’s been the most challenging part of the planning? Getting our Civil Partner rings engraved for the day. There is nothing worse than taking your ring off - it feels very wrong, a feeling of loss almost. Just two hours was long enough! What was the easiest part? Getting the suits. We all wore the same colour and design and the same silk tie. Martin and I wore light blue shirts and the best men and ushers wore white. As a special thank you to the team we had cufflinks made with seach of our titles for the day. Do you have any advice for other couples planning their wedding? We planned ours to be a celebration of the

journey we have travelled together over the last 17 years, so we asked all the people that had been part of it. It was quite amazing as over 120 guests joined us for the ceremony, and even more came to the reception! Who were your suppliers? Susie Hosfoth, she’s a fellow Councillor and performed our service as the registrar. Angel Cakes of Poundbury made our three wedding cakes; a huge Victoria Sponge, a lemon drizzle cake and a raspberry and white chocolate sponge. The catering was a big party food buffet which was done by the team at The Horse with the Red Umbrella. Our DJ was Mark Gerrard of Pegasus Disco. We particularly chose him because he did the evening reception at our Civil Partnership, all those years ago! I have always said ‘keeping local buisness

local and making money go the right way round into the town and not out of this town’. David’s message... Being a Sherborne lad and having the honour of being Martin’s friend, partner and husband, it make me very proud of Dorchester and Dorset to take under wings of friendship. We are made to a feel a true part of this fantastic town. We are all very lucky to be part of this jewel of Dorset; we thank you all for being our friends...in fact, you probably could class us all as one big family of friends! Thank you.

Civil ceremonies are non-religious legal marriages that stay clear of any prayer, hymns or religious belief. In the UK they are performed by a government official called a registrar in any licensed venue. The actual agreement of marriage involves both parties signing the register as well as signatures of two witnesses. Generally, couples keep ceremonies simple but many include music, poems, ring bearing and words and promises. Legal statements and declarations, signing of the register and presentation of the marriage certificate are the bones of a civil ceremony. People often go for this option if they prefer a non-religious ceremony, they want to keep it small, private, or save money. Couples wanting to hold ceremonies in unlicensed venues need to make their marriage legal with a civil ceremony beforehand.

Celebrant Ceremony

Using a celebrant allows you to have as much flexibility as you want. You can have your ceremony wherever you choose – whether it be in a field or in your back garden. It can be entirely up to you on how the occasion flows and can reflect your lifestyle, suit your friends and family’s needs too. No restrictions. A celebrant will help you put together your personalised service, where the words, vows and promises have personal significance for you, rather than

following a set format. These ceremonies are not legal however so couples have to also take part in a civil ceremony to be married in the eyes of the law.

Church Ceremonies

Church weddings have always been the most traditional ceremonies in the UK. They have some element of personalisation, but generally they follow a set format which involves traditions like walking up the aisle, ring bearing, hymns and spoken vows and promises. Christian ceremonies express worship, joy, and belief in God. Churches can also often act as a central hub for smaller communities where the families can share the celebration of a member’s marriage in the eyes of God. The congregation can see that you are making a solemn, eternal covenant with each other before God.

Pagan Handfasting Ceremonies

Handfasting ceremonies originated in medieval times and are often said to be Celtic or pagan celebrations of marriage. They are an alternative to traditional ceremonies. The format has many elements which have been altered and added on through history. Ceremonies include casting the circle, paying respect to the earth’s elements and jumping the broom. The main component of a handfasting is the tying of the couple’s wrists with ribbon or cord. It is here that the phrase tying the knot comes from.

Tell us about how you two met… We met on a night out with friends in Christchurch, Matt was actually trying to avoid a few other ‘stalker ‘type girls and managed to escape, we got on straight away, exchanged numbers and the next day Matt asked me out on a date. Facebook can be useful! How, when & where did the proposal happen? Matt went about it the traditional way, he asked my dad, all the family were so touched. He asked my sister to help choose the ring, and he did it on Christmas Day 2013 in our lovely flat. He asked me to walk into our lounge, slowly! I hear Bruno Mars ‘Think I Wanna Marry You’ playing and there were arrows of chocolates leading to a big one in the middle of the floor, I pulled back the cover, and there was a heart of chocolates reading ‘Will You Marry Me?’ With the ring placed in the middle.

What was the first thing you did to plan your wedding? The first thing we did was to get the venue secured. We chose the Eastclose Hotel in Hinton as we had passed it many times and it just looked gorgeous. It stood out for us. It was also very close to our Church St Michaels and All Angels, so it meant guests didn’t need to travel far. You had a rustic and Scottish theme, was it hard to combine the two? The Scottish elements I had always thought about, I asked Matt if it was ok with him to add in little touches such as a piper, the men on my side of the family in kilts, thistles in the flowers, but without going over the top and he knew it meant a lot. The colour we chose just seemed to compliment the rustic side so it all came together. Did you have any problems when planning? We didn’t have any issues when planning as such, but we didn’t expect Matt to get so emotional and so nervous on the day that he would end up having to have a lie down during the evening reception

30

after it all being a little too much, I don’t think even he could of planned for that! Were there any suppliers that you thought were outstanding? Lauren Curry at Concept Flowers for just knowing what we wanted and taking the time to get to know us and making our families feel so special on the day, Keith Bridle Photography for letting us live our wedding day over again and again. Magical. Using home grown businesses

was something we really wanted to do. A big recommendation to Katie Portlock assisted by Hayley Elliott of Southampton for providing Bride’s Make-Up/Hair and styling hair for 5 out of 6 bridesmaids! Big task! Tell us about choosing your dress… Choosing my dress was a special time, I went to Bride’s of Southampton with my mum and sister, we hadn’t expected to like anything at the time, they had a Spring sale and I thought I might

try a few designs on to see what they looked like and well, honestly, how much weight I needed to loose! But I tried this one dress on, and it made me have butterflies, I came out and mum burst into happy tears, it was my one. I decided that was it, we took it, and I didn’t even peek at another bridal shop again. I had fallen totally in love with it, and I still had a year to go before I wore it! Tell us about your wedding day Our wedding day Friday 26th June was just the most stunning day, the weather had stayed beautiful for us and that was a big relief! There was so much love in the church and when our evening guests arrived, everyone just knew how much of a happy day it was and we appreciated every single person who was involved with our day. It was overwhelming,

emotional, hilarious at the same time. It did had originality, our best man Mark sang his speech and made everyone laugh and cry. We had a personal friend singing our first dance song which meant everything to us. One word...MOMENTUS. Do you have any advice for brides planning their weddings? Do buy a planner or scrap book with ideas, because all the info whizzes round

in your head and all you have is figures and too many choices. Plus its nice to look back on and see all the effort you’ve both put into it. Also find out how quickly a supplier gets booked up! Our Photographer was Keith Bridle from Bridle Photography, we highly recommend him!

Expert Advice What do wedding planners do? Wedding planning isn’t like the films, where pristine women are running around in headsets ordering other people to keep the swans in check. Wedding planners are just regular people who simply put, take the stress away from the couple getting married. Basically, all the non-glamorous and boring parts are taken care of, while you can still be the driving force behind the decisions and get to do all the fun parts. A wedding planner can help guide you through the process with advice and experience. It’s a myth that wedding planners charge thousands of pounds and you just turn up on the day to get married. The whole wedding is about you, so it’s only natural that you do the choosing and decision making to make it personal to you. A wedding planner provides you with options, negotiates on your behalf (and with good contacts, this is helpful). When planning your wedding, many family and friends find it easy to get wrapped up in your excitement and, in passing, offer to help. This can give you a false idea of how many people will be there to help you set-up and clear away (for the more DIY weddings). It’s surprising how busy people can become when the work to do is not very fun. So, in short, a wedding planner can do as much or as little as you are looking for. But most of all, keep you sane.

Decorated Biscuits The

BAKING Bride

By the Flour Fairy, Cake by Sadie Smith

Biscuits (makes 12)

3. Place on a lightly greased tray.

175g plain flour 110g soft butter 75g caster sugar 1 teaspoon mixed spice

4. Bake for about 10 minutes, until they start to go golden brown, the biscuits will still feel very soft at this stage, as they harden whilst cooling.

Icing

5. Allow to cool completely.

1 pack royal icing (the type you add water to & mix) Decoration

6. Following the instructions on the packet, make up the royal icing. Add a few drops of your chosen colour.

Preheat oven to 180c/gas 4 1. Place the flour, mixed spice, sugar and butter in a bowl, mix and knead until a dough is formed. (If the mixture is too crumbly add a dash of milk). 2. Roll out the dough about 5mm thick and using a shaped cutter stamp out the required biscuit shape.

7. Divide the royal icing into two bowls, from the first bowl spoon the royal icing into a piping bag with a number 2 writing nozzle, pipe an outline around the edge of the biscuit. The best way to do this is to keep constant pressure on the piping bag and try to do the outline in one continuous line. Keeping an even speed will ensure the line of piping doesn’t keep breaking.

8. Allow the outline of the icing to harden for about 10 mins. 9. To ‘flood’ the biscuits you need the royal icing a little runnier, so add a few drops of water until it is more of a pouring consistency but not too thin. Use a piping bag and squeeze in the centre of the biscuit; it will then spread across the biscuit until it hits the piping outline. You may want to gently tease the icing to the edges with the nozzle end. 10. Add your chosen decoration. 11. Allow the icing to completely dry out and go hard then either store in an airtight container or put in little bags tied with ribbon. Tip: You can make these biscuits a few days in advance so there’s no rushing about!

Something Borrowed’s

Styled Shoot Having been a part of the wedding community in Dorset for over four years now, I’m well versed in the trials and tribulations of wedding season. Weekends are the busiest time, and with a steady increase in weekday weddings, suppliers are always on the go. So why not add a styled shoot to the mix on a sunny Tuesday evening?! After visiting the Bournemouth Vintage Emporium for a cream tea, I was impressed with its set-up – the truly vintage items, arranged in such a way that you felt that you were time travelling through remarkable decades.

That, and the quirky tearoom made it a place I knew would offer a gorgeous backdrop to a bridal photoshoot.

thanks to the bespoke headpieces loaned by Tiaras By Becky, who handmade each piece worn. The bejewelled brooch bouquet marks the launch of a new line by this talented jewellery maker, and we’re in no doubt that brides will be champing at the bit to own one, each offering a lovely wedding keepsake that can be passed on for generations to come. One of the key elements were the flowers, which were arranged by Concept Flowers. Lauren’s creative ability is astounding, and boy, did she deliver. Each ‘set’ had been carefully considered, with our whimsical vintage bride bedecked in muted hues of lilac and pink and our inked beauty had vibrant colours that just brought the

whole look together. Thanks to the two immensely talented photographers, Bridle Photography and Ten Six Eight Photography, each model had her own pap. Take a look at the gorgeous images and see for yourself how talented these two Dorset photographers are. I was especially excited to work with newcomer to the wedding industry, DDH Wedding & Event Hire. We borrowed their super cute ‘Happily Ever After’ sign, which just completed our look. Its quirky elegance will bring a sense of promise, nostalgia and fun to a wedding. Coupled with the gorgeous lace bunting by Bunting By Chris, this makes for one helluva stylish wedding!

The shoot wouldn’t have been complete without Harry from Harry’s Vintage Wedding Films. Harry’s style is incomparable; he shoots on super 8 cine film which results in an absolutely stunning and timeless memento. Just have a look at our film from behind the scenes at the shoot! Any bride looking for a vintage wedding style should check out all of the companies we worked with on this, it’s a no-brainer really. And those a little more daring? How we met… Josh and I met through my parents, Josh is a little older than me so he would come over some weekends and have a few drinks with my dad, over time we got to know each other better and became good friends, always having a laugh and a joke! Until one day we met up, just the two of us and it just felt right! He was quite the charmer! The proposal! When we first got together we had always spoken about getting engaged and getting married, but didn’t plan anything. I turned 18 in January 2013, and had a birthday party. During the evening, he got up on the stage

and made a little speech and then it just came out; “Rebekah will you marry me?” I was in shock for what felt like forever so everyone behind me was telling me to give him an answer! It was amazing but emotional. The next day we went and bought my engagement ring from H Samuel. We originally planned a long engagement, and have always said we wanted to get married on the closest Saturday to the 17th August, since this is our anniversary. However, in July 2014, we were sat with my parents just talking about our wedding that would happen one day, when we decided that we wanted to get married Saturday 15th August

2015...and we did! After that, the date stuck and the planning began! What was the first thing you did to plan your wedding? We looked around a couple of venues in the Bournemouth area, and due to both having big families we knew we would need somewhere that could hold a large capacity. My parents had previously been to an event at the Marriott Hotel in Bournemouth and recommended it to us, so we arranged to meet with the wedding co-ordinator and have a look around. WOW! It was beautiful, and our date was available, so to us it was clear that it was meant to be! We booked the venue, followed by

the registrar. The venue was perfect. We used the Dorchester Suite, which was absolutely stunning. We had an outdoor ceremony, in the gazebo overlooking the beach and the pier, which was so romantic. How involved was the groom? Josh was very much involved with the planning from the start. We both had ideas of what we wanted and we worked together to make sure we were both happy with what we were booking. We shared opinions on things, for example I wanted cupcakes originally as our wedding cake with just the one tier to cut, whereas Josh wanted the traditional three tier cake that we could cut top to bottom. We went with the three tier, so I’d say he was very helpful

in the planning! Did you have any problems when planning? We didn’t have many problems during planning at all, in fact it all went smoothly! The only problems we did have, was our wedding coordinator left a couple of months before our big day and we were then told we have a new one, I’m sure any other bride to be would understand how worrying something like that can be; worrying about whether your new co-ordinator knows everything about your day, knows what you want, what you don’t want etc. However as soon as we met Natalie all those worries were gone, because she was lovely! When it came close to the big day we were in regular contact, she was very helpful. On the actual day, we could not have asked for more

from Natalie and the wedding team. They went above and beyond for us! The second problem was my hairdresser! I was let down three weeks before the wedding, and without time on my side I was running out of options. If it wasn’t for my best friend, who is a hairdresser, stepping in and offering to do it, I don’t know what I would have done! What was important to you on your big day? The most important thing to me was that Josh and I had that beautiful day that we had been dreaming of! We had been planning our wedding for a year, and wanted it to be perfect. We made sure the guests were entertained, we had an ice cream cart, canapés and Pimms for after the ceremony...they were a big hit! We also thought it was important to have a little “us” time after we were married, so it was arranged with

the hotel that after our photos, the guests go in and are seated for the meal whilst we have that time together to just relax and enjoy our moments together as husband and wife. Choosing the dress! As soon as Josh proposed, I started looking at wedding dresses; it was always the same sort of styles that I would look at the elegant lace fitted dresses. After a few days of looking I came across the Stella York website. There are so many beautiful dresses on there! There were two on there that I liked, so I searched the local stockists and got in contact with Wedding Time in Dorchester. They were able to get both of the dresses in for me to try on, which was amazing. A few weeks later, I went down with my bridesmaids and tried

both of them on, when I left the shop I knew which dress it was that I wanted. Date of the wedding Saturday 15th August 2015. Would you change anything? No, I wouldn’t change a thing about our day! It was perfect from start to finish! We even had gorgeous whether to help make our day even more perfect! My advice for future brides My advice would be not to stress too much over things like the table planning or the guest list. At the end of the day, you will be surrounded by people who love you both a

lot, and the table plan is for a few hours. We had a couple of tables where we sat people who didn’t know each other, and it was the best decision we made because they all had a laugh together! Remember you are planning this day for you and your partner, no one else!
