How did you two meet?

We met in the most unlikely of places; our circumstances both led us to the basement area of a dark dingy club in Bristol. I had recently been in touch with my half sister, Caz, who at the time worked at Castros night club on the bar and also helped my dear friend Tripp to decorate the club for different events. Caz invited me to stay for the weekend so I could see what the nightclub was all about. On the night in question there was a good-looking guy setting up the sound system, plugging in turntables and generally looking busy. The guy was a DJ called Mark, who had free reign of the basement along side his long time friend and DJ Partner Nick, aka Dyson and Chewy. Mark says he saw me standing at the bar whilst Caz was bottling up and had a hard time not looking back. The night started and progressed very quickly into being a busy one. By this point, I’d noticed Mark and we couldn’t take our eyes off each

other. Apparently Mark was having a hard time mixing his records at the right time because he was distracted by my dancing! Mark and I found every opportunity to cross paths, at one point Mark popped out from the booth to get a drink and on his way back he placed his hand on my hip to pass and I gave him a squeeze. At the next event I wasn’t there so Mark got my number from Caz and the texting began. It wasn’t long before texts turned into visits and the start of our 7 year long distance relationship began.

How, when and where did the proposal happen?

Mark proposed to me in August 2008. After a night out in Bournemouth we visited the beach. Mark had prepared ‘our’ song, You Do Something To Me by Paul Weller, ready on his phone to play when the time was right. We were standing under an archway looking at the full moon that was hanging over the edge of the pier when Mark hit play on his phone. Unfortunately, this did not have the desired effect as the volume was up and it

17

was right next to my ear. Abruptly stopping the music Mark said “Katy, I have something to ask you” and produced the ring box. “Will you marry me?”. I didn’t hesitate and replied; “nothing would make me happier”.

Tell us about planning the Wedding

The planning of the wedding was a lot smoother than had been expected, especially since I took charge. Early on we delegated ‘blue’ jobs and ‘pink’ jobs. Th is helped us to order tasks that we would both be better at doing given our individual skill sets. In one day we had visited and booked the church, the venue and

18

the accommodation. We were pretty decisive with our choices! We opted for a DIY wedding as we wanted it to be as individual as possible, although this made a lot more work for us! We made everything by hand: favours, table decorations, invitations, table plan, name cards, order of service, menus and if we couldn’t do it, then we had nearest and dearest doing it (our bunting and drapes were made by my mum Kay). The day before the wedding we had all hands on deck, as it was held in a village hall the set up was down to us. Best man Nick was putting up

the ceiling drapes, usher Steve setting up sound and lighting, bridesmaids Joanna, Sarah, Nikila, Sammy and Ellie were hanging the decor, ironing linen, polishing glasses, laying the tables and a lot of other people doing their bit to help. We also had to drive from Swanage to Poole town to have the church rehearsal in amongst all that.

What date was your wedding? 26th April 2014.

Was the wedding day everything you expected? Pulling all of the planning together and with so many friends and family helping, it was everything we had both dreamed of

Did you have a honeymoon?

and more than we could have possibly imagined. It was a real home grown wedding with using various friends and family members skill sets to make it happen, just gave it such a feeling of community and togetherness. It felt like such an achievement knowing we had done everything ourselves and made it individual and creative. The icing on the cake was that the weather was so good all day! So much of it was outside, it would never have been the same if it rained! There are so many who helped to make it so special, from our fantastic suppliers to our family and friends. A special thank you goes to my parents, Richard and Denise, for hosting such a special day. I want to do it all again!

20

We enjoyed a 2 week honeymoon to Jamaica where we took full advantage of not having to really do too much for 2 weeks. For the second week, because we kept getting locked out of our room, we were upgraded to the presidential suite which was the icing on a very relaxed awesome sunny honeymoon. We had a real mishmash of suppliers to pull it all together, seeing as they have so many friends with amazing skills to call on. Dress and Suits Lima Marie range from Just for you Bridal, Bristol. aura pressed ‘End’ and put her iPhone down on the counter. ‘Knickers, knickers, knickers,’ she muttered to herself, as she stared blankly at the rails of dresses in her tiny shop. Being surrounded by these dresses - her dresses - usually fi lled her with joy and a real sense of achievement. She had created each and every one, fi rst in her imagination, then on paper and fi nally in the glorious fabrics around her. But today Laura’s eyes flitted across satin, silk georgette, organza, taffeta, tulle, chiffon, crepe and velvet with complete indifference. She had been very calm and reassuring on the phone: had told Jan to stay in bed, have plenty of hot drinks and not even think about coming back to work before she was feeling completely better. But, having said all the right things, Laura now felt entitled to panic. She started to frantically scribble herself a To Do List: 1) Check the diary for today’s appointments 2) Hand-sew a gazillion sequins onto a bodice for a fitting on Thurs 3) Make alterations to

22

three other dresses 4) Do the above while serving random customers who walk in off the street‼ 5) Arrgh! PANIC! 6) Phone an agency and get a temp in for the week! URGENT! But it was when Laura checked the diary that the real, genuine, heartstopping panic set in. OMG! She had completely forgotten that the awful Mrs Silverton-Parkes was coming in today. When the woman rang to make the appointment she had been snooty, over-bearing and totally obnoxious - all in the space of about five minutes. Unfortunately she was also very wealthy, very well connected and the type of person Laura badly needed to impress if her fledgling business was going to survive the credit crunch. Laura said a silent prayer to whatever powers might be listening and, list forgotten, started to tear around like a headless chicken. First she scuttled into her workroom, sat down and sewed on half a dozen sequins, then dashed around the shop rearranging dresses on the rails. When the door opened half an hour later,

setting the bell jangling, Laura nearly fainted on the spot. She spun around knocking against a glass cabinet of tiaras, making it rock precariously. ‘Are you okay?’ the girl on the doorstep asked in concern. She was dressed from head to toe in black, from the black lacy ribbon in her hair to the black Doc Martins on her feet. She looked completely out of place in a bridal shop amongst all the white, ivory and champagne-coloured dresses. Laura was about to ask how she could help the girl, when the penny suddenly dropped. ‘You must be the temp!’ Laura was so relieved to have another pair of hands she almost didn’t care what the temp looked like. The girl gave a smile in answer and walked straight past Laura into the workroom. ‘I think you could use a cup of chamomile, lemon balm and lavender,’ she said over her shoulder. Laura followed, slightly bemused, and found her fi lling the kettle at the tiny sink. ‘I’m Bella, by the way.’ Laura took the offered mug and found herself start to relax. Everything was going to be alright.

in her hand (where on earth had that come from?) smiling in approval. Laura did a double-take when she saw a curvaceous brunette wearing a simple satin sheath dress which showed off her gorgeous curves to perfection. Surely that couldn’t be the same girl?

As Laura sat sewing on sequins - which seemed almost to glide onto the stiff bodice of their own accord - she could hear the girl talking to customers. She listened in growing admiration as Bella gently guided each woman in her choice of dress. But it was only when the brides-to-be stepped out of the tiny curtained fitting room looking like a million dollars, that she really began to appreciate Bella’s skill. With the lightest of comments the girl diverted an older bride’s attention from a totally unsuitable fairy tale princess dress that made her look like the Wicked Witch of the West to a knee-length sheath dress that showed off her fabulous legs, had a jacket that hid her tummy and made her positively sparkle. A young, headstrong blonde was changed from barmaid to movie star by Bella’s tactful suggestion of a halter neck dress rather than one with a plunging neckline. She seemed to have a knack for fi nding the perfect dress for every bride. And remarkably, the dresses fitted each woman to perfection, so that unless they gained or lost more than a few pounds in the run up to their weddings, no fiddly, time-consuming

alterations were required. Of course the real test would be the dreaded Mrs Silverton-Parkes. Laura was with another customer when the bell jingled and in walked a fashionably thin middleaged woman with a hard face and cold blue eyes. Laura realized at once who it must be. Behind her was a rather plump girl who looked like she desperately didn’t want to be there. Laura watched with growing trepidation as they selected a ball gown style dress with a crushed crepe pick-up skirt that would make the girl’s hips look enormous. She sighed, knowing there were going to be tears and tantrums before long. But, miraculously, when Laura went through to the workroom she found Mrs S-P with a glass of bubbly

When Laura fi nally sat down on Friday evening, having said a reluctant goodbye to Bella, she felt exhausted but triumphant. Her shop had never had such a successful week. The days had passed in a blur. But when she closed her eyes she could visualize the smiling faces of satisfied customers and when she opened them again the bulging order book told her that it had not been a dream after all. A piece of paper was sticking out of the book and she smiled when she found her scribbled To Do List. She was about to throw it in the bin when she spotted the fi nal item. There was no tick beside it. Laura frowned, puzzled, and realized that she hadn’t phoned the recruitment agency after all. Later, as she turned the key in the lock, she closed her eyes and said a heartfelt ‘Thank you’, hoping the breeze would carry her words to Bella, wherever and whatever she was.

How did you two meet? Ross and I met online in June 2006. Ross lived in Gurnesy and I lived in Poole so we didn’t get to properly meet until December 2006. It was love at fi rst sight, over the Southampton arrivals lounge.

30

How, when & where did the proposal happen?

Well, after 6 years together and still no proposal, I decided to take control and propose to Ross on Leap year 2011. Myself and my daughter, Morgan, set out our conservatory like a Chinese restaurant and cooked a lovely Chinese

meal. Morgan met Ross from his car, dressed as a waitress, and brought him into the conservatory and took his order. We ate our dinner and then I said ‘Before we have our pudding I would just like to say we are an amazing family unit and I would like to enjoy our life together as husband

and wife, will you marry me?’ Of course he said yes! I had bought him an engagement ring, as well as one for my daughter and one for myself and presented them to him in a miniature Chinese take away box.

Tell us about planning the wedding.

Well, we booked the complete wedding at the Miramar Hotel in Bournemouth. I am a very organised person and my best friend gave me a brilliant engagement present of a Wedding Planner Journal, which was very helpful. We wanted to have a beach themed wedding, as we were getting married by the beach, and that is where we spend so much

of our time as a family. I decided on sunshine yellow for the bridesmaids and flower girls. I had my sister as maid of honour and her three girls as flower girls and my daughter as a bridesmaid. Ross had his father as best man, along with my brother as an usher. My mum and I really enjoyed going to all the wedding fairs to get ideas and meet wedding suppliers. We went to two wedding dress shops and settled on the most beautiful dress

from Special Occasions in Lower Parkstone. My mum burst into tears so I knew this was the right dress. Ross is a Design Technology teacher so he was very involved in everything. He designed and made the save the dates and wedding invitations, as well as table names. We made miniature deck chairs for the name places and small yellow buckets fi lled with brown sugar for sand and topped with chocolate sea

31

shells as the favours. Ross also made a beach hut that we used for people to post their cards and honeymoon vouchers into. It was very effective and a good talking point. My step auntie, Lyn Jordan, did all of my flowers which were yellow and white roses. We had gold fish bowls on the tables and the bridesmaids had yellow and white roses in a small bouquet. My bouquet was long and flowing with some yellow Julia’s House roses in, as I work for them. Ross is from Scotland and so he was in his full tartan outfit. We got some samples and had them woven into my bouquet and flower pedestals. My friend made my wedding cake which was an angled cake of three layers; vanilla, lemon and fruit. It was made to look

32

like a sand castle and it was amazing! We also made a surprise Groom cake which was myself dressed as a nurse and Ross dressed in his kilt sat on our deck chairs outside our Beach hut. It was breathtaking. When my mum and I went to the BIC we saw South Coast Sweet Cart with their beach themed sweet display so that was a defi nite for the evening reception and it certainly went down well with the children and the adults. We had quite a few children at our wedding so we organised for a Punch and Judy show to perform while we had the speeches - they really enjoyed that. We also decked the back garden of the Miramar with children’s toys, giant connect four, croquet and lots more. For the presents to the children I made pillows for them,

personalised with a beach themed cross stitch, as well as bridesmaid sticker books. Each child that came to the wedding had a goody bag on their table with an activity book that we devised relating to us and our wedding day with colouring pens and beach stickers. I really loved making them and they certainly kept the children occupied for the meal. We made stickers for the champagne bottles (which matched the invites) for our parents and personalised vases for the mums. I was very anxious about the weather as I wanted to get married outside, so when I fi nally looked out and they were putting the chairs out I was excited. The weather was amazing and the flowers looked fabulous. I walked down the aisle to ‘First Love’ by Yiruma this was from Twilight (which I love) and I cried every time I heard it and on the day. For the evening we had a Scottish ceilidh band, which everyone enjoyed, and followed this with a disco. Our fi rst dance was Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’.

Groom

It is 37 years since I gave my groom’s speech, and since then I’ve been to dozens of weddings, given one father-of-the-bride speech and am preparing my second as my younger daughter gets married this summer. Many people don’t appear to understand the traditions of the speeches, so here is a quick guide for you. There are traditionally just three speeches, in order they are father-of-the-bride, then the groom, then the best man. It is a good idea for everyone to try and get a joke or two into their speech, but make sure they are suitable for the occasion (that is relevant and clean). No one must ever say anything that might remotely upset the bride.

Father-of-the-bride

• Welcome everyone and thank them for coming • Say nice things about the bride and some anecdotes so the groom’s family and friends get to know a bit about her, along with something nice about your new son-in-law • Say something about marriage and weddings based on your own age and obviously great wisdom • Propose a toast to the bride and groom

34

• Thank your new father-in-law for his kind words • Thank your bride’s parents, your own parents and anyone else you can think of for how both of you have turned out • Say how wonderful your bride is and looks • Thank the bridesmaids for helping her and say how wonderful they look • Thank you best man for getting you there on time, sober and properly dressed • Propose a toast to the bridesmaids • (If you want to give out gifts to any of the people you thank, you can do so during your speech, but if you have jewellery for the bridesmaids and cuff-links for the best man, they are better done before the wedding so they can wear them)

Best Man

• Thank the groom on behalf of the bridesmaids for his toast to them • Say some things about the groom – try to keep it funny and clean, and don’t embarrass him (too much) or upset his elderly relatives. NEVER mention former girlfriends or what happened on the stag night! • You don’t propose a toast, but traditionally finish by saying something like “please get your cameras as the bride and groom will now cut the cake”

David Foster is a business coach, with a son, two daughters and is grandfather to three small children with one more on the way.

A recipe for love Ever wondered what goes on in the mind of a wedding cake maker? We asked Emma Woods of Fancie Buns to let us know! Where do you get inspiration for your designs? I get inspiration from absolutely everywhere! Fabrics, graphics, flowers, crockery, invitations, fashion, wedding dresses, jewellery, accessories, colours - the list is endless! Are you seeing trends in wedding cakes for this year? Vintage is still a big trend for 2014. Lots of roses, peonies and various lace designs are booked for this year. Rustic butter cream or

ganache cakes are also becoming a popular alternative to a traditionally iced cake, decorated with real flowers. They fit perfectly with a rustic themed wedding. They are also budget friendly! Finally the use of metallic effects is really taking off, from a full gold or silver leaf tier, to a subtle lustre sheen applied to all tiers. Metallics can give a modern decadent look to a cake. What do you like best about your job? It has to be seeing the fi nished cake all set up at the venue, alongside all of the flowers, decorations & details discussed at the couples initial consultation and their vision of their perfect day all in place knowing you played a small part in it. What’s the most challenging cake you’ve ever had to make? My most recent challenge was a sandcastle wedding cake. My clients wanted it to look just like a

sandcastle! I spent a lot of time researching the best medium to use to make edible ‘sand’ that looked realistic but would also taste scrummy! Then there was the challenge of getting the ‘sand’ to stick to the cake, what to make the turrets and crenellations from and how to attach them, so that it was all edible. It was also my messiest cake to make to date but great fun! What advice would you give to a couple looking for their wedding cake? Consider how many guests your cake needs to serve. Be open minded but consider your theme, colours, invitations, flowers and dress when choosing your design. Meet with your cake designer, ask to see examples of their work and that their style will fit with your ideas. Always & most importantly sample their cake and fi nd out what flavour choices they offer! You want to ensure your cake not only looks amazing but tastes amazing too! www.fanciebunscakery.co.uk

How did you two meet? We met through mutual friends in Exeter who had plotted to set us up! They thought we’d be perfect for one another and they were of course right! We got on so effortlessly and shared the same sense of humour. After only a couple of dates we were both sure we’d found our soul mate. How, when & where did the proposal happen? Charlie proposed on valentine’s day 2013. I’d been at work all day and when I got home, all of the lights were off and he’d written “marry me” in candles in our living room! There were tea lights everywhere, a bottle of champagne, red roses and a bubble bath run for me! It was lovely that it was just us at home together. Instead of buying me a Valentine’s card he presented me with a “congratulations on your engagement” card! Somewhat presumptuous, but obviously there was no

doubt in my mind when I accepted and subsequently spent most of the evening sobbing with happiness! Tell us about planning the wedding. We planned our wedding in a relatively short space of time. We started off very relaxed about it and then as the big day got closer the small details took up more time than we envisaged. It seemed a great idea to make as much as possible ourselves but it was actually pretty stressful! It was worth it though as we were thrilled with how it all looked. We decided on a vintage country garden theme, with roses being the main focus (inspired by Charlie’s surname!). Our florist was truly inspiring and gave us so many ideas, including

using flowers to decorate our cake and placing our table centrepieces on log slices to create a rustic feel. She also decorated a tree in the grounds with vintage hearts and ribbons as a surprise for us. My advice would be to delegate to willing family members or bridesmaids. My mum made our favours and it was not just a great help but also a lovely surprise on the day. My mother-in-law, Jill, was also a huge support with dress fittings and last minute panics! What date was your wedding? 10th April 2014 - Easter Saturday. Which worked out well as most of our guests had long weekends off.

Was the wedding day everything you expected? It was wonderful and we both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! It was hard to take it all in as the day flew by so quickly; especially the church ceremony as we were so emotional. Our brilliant photographer captured the day perfectly, and it’s such a joy to look over our photos and see moments we didn’t notice on the day due to all the excitement! We were incredibly lucky with the weather also as it was sunshine almost all day. Are you going on a honeymoon? We had a blissfully relaxing week in Spain spent mainly on the beach and in the local restaurants.

Why get engagement photos done?

Well, if you’ve already booked your photographer for your wedding day, it will give you a great opportunity to see how they work, and if you haven’t, it’ll give you

a chance to trial your favourite contender. On the big day itself, you will spend a lot of time with your photographer, so the relationship you have with them is important. It’s an idea to have your engagement photographs

taken somewhere that means something to you as a couple Perhaps the place you got engaged or where you had your first date. This will also help you feel more at ease with the photographer. As well as being great for you as a couple, it will also

help the photographer get a feel for what you do and don’t like and what you’re comfortable with. Above all, have fun and let your photographer be creative and hopefully you’ll get results like these great photographers.

You will need: 1 mtr fabric (can be made up of 4 ¼ mtrs of matching material) Pair of sharp scissors Pins Tape measure Template 16cm x 22cm Knitting needle with round top Bias binding Iron Sewing machine Pencil or crayon Cut fabric into 33cm wide lengths and fold in half with right sides together and press with iron. Place long edge of template on the fold and draw around with the pencil or crayon, don’t press too hard just enough to see the marking, turn the template around and place toward the open edge and draw around template again. If your fabric is 114cm wide you should be able to fit 10 triangles down the fabric, this will make 10 pennants. 1 mtr of fabric

should make 30 pennants which are flat this make for easier is enough for approx 8mtrs of placing of pennants on the bias bunting. binding. Cut out the triangles taking care to keep to the centre line so that the triangles are nearly all the same size, don’t worry too much as bunting looks quite nice if it’s not all completely symmetrical. You should now have 5 folded triangles and 10 separate triangles. Match the separate ones into pairs, right sides together ready for sewing and sew down long seam to about ½ cm from point and then turn and sew back up other long side, sew all pennants the same way (sew both edges of every pennant even the folded edge otherwise they will not hang properly). Trim point away but not too close to stitching and turn in right way using knitting needle to push point gently out. Iron each pennant flat making sure seams

Continue to sew all the pennants until you have them turned and pressed ready for attaching to the bias binding. Cut required length of binding and leave the first 30-35cm before placing first pennant. Lay pennant on half the bind and then fold other half over and pin in place on both edges. Leave approx 13cm between pennants and pin rest to the binding, once pinned sew from one end to the other of the binding making sure to double stitch ends so that nothing comes undone. If you have chosen to do 4 matching patterns make sure they are placed in order down the binding. Now you have beautiful homemade bunting for any occasion.

As we all know, the first dance is where the bride and groom glide elegantly around the dance floor (or not in some cases), to lead the way for the rest of us to take to the dance floor and party the night away. This tradition didn’t start with weddings though… The first dance originates from balls being held by wealthy families. It was custom for the host of the event or the guest of honour to have the first dance of the evening. The idea being, just as it is today, that this opens the dancing for the rest of the evening. Traditionally the first dance was a waltz but today anything goes! Dances now range from ballroom and salsa to swaying (for those with two left feet) or a surprise choreographed dance just for the couple. Whatever dance you choose, who doesn’t love a good boogie⁉

Nowadays, wedding cakes come in all shapes, colours and sizes but this hasn’t always been the case… For centuries, wedding cakes have been part of the couple’s big day, although were not always the centre of attention. The wedding cake was originally known as The Bride’s Cake so to reflect the bride, the cakes were white. In Medieval times, cakes were piled as tall as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over. If they managed this challenge (which one can only imagine was quite messy!), they were guaranteed a wealthy life (if only a successful marriage depended on a bit of smooching over sugary food!). Tiered wedding cakes represented wealth and were a status symbol, as only the richest families could afford to have them.
