Planning your...
marquee wedding A wedding in a marquee means that you get complete control over how it looks, but while that can allow your creativity to run wild, it also means more work for you to do! The key to a successful marquee wedding is in the planning – don’t leave things to the last minute as you run the risk of not being able to get what you want. We’ll take you through the planning process step by step. Finding your venue Many venues offer marquee weddings, some provide you with a plot of land for a fixed fee and that’s it, some will arrange a marquee for you and some will have everything you need already there. This will affect a) the cost and b) the freedom of choice. A venue that just provides the land will expect you to book your own marquee and furniture, and depending on the site; toilets and power. They may have a list of providers that they prefer you to use, or they may let you decide who to commission for the job.
A venue that already has a marquee for you to use will include that in their hire price. You may to liaise with the marquee company or venue about what furniture and fittings you’d like in the marquee and pay that as a separate cost. You may also need to hire toilets and power, although some places will have this also included in the fee. Some venues have marquees ready to go for weddings, so all the furniture and fittings are already included, so all you need to do is think about how to dress your wedding venue. These venues may have a list of suppliers they prefer you to use, so it’s worth checking out prices for caterers, bars and entertainment before you commit. There are a few important questions you need to ask when looking at venues. 1. Who arranges the marquee? 2. What’s the capacity of the marquee? 3. Can I have the marquee anywhere on the site? 4. What’s the restriction on times? 5. Is there a bar provided or
is there corkage on alcohol we bring in? 6. Is there electricity provided? 7. Are there toilets provided? 8. Is there parking and can cars be left overnight? 9. What happens in the case of severe weather? 10. Can we camp on the site? 11. Is there someone on site throughout our wedding? 12. Can we use our own caterer?
running of your event, it gives the chefs a place to prep, a place for dirty plates to be taken care of and a place for staff to wait in in-between courses. You’ll need to provide tables for the caterer, and discuss with them what equipment they supply themselves. Some caterers provide their own station for food preparation, for example hog roasts, BBQs or food vans.
Provisions for your wedding Once you have decided upon your wedding venue, you need to start sorting out what you are having inside your marquee. You may have tables and chairs provided, in which case this bit’s easy. If not, you need to find out the cost of chairs and tables (don’t forget to ask if the price includes VAT). You’ll need to think about your layout, would you prefer round tables or banquet style seating? Don’t forget to include tables for your presents, cake and buffet if you are having one.
Also find out who is supplying plates, cutlery, cups and glasses, as well as table cloths. Some caterers will be able to quote for this, but you might want to get a couple of quotes from companies. It’s also worth bearing in mind that many supermarkets also offer free glass hire – these can be a bit mis-matched, but for free, you can’t complain!
Catering Depending on the type of catering you are opting for, you may need to add on a catering tent. This is a small tent that’s added to the rear of your marquee for the caterer to set up their ‘kitchen’ in. If you prefer a hot, sit down meal then this is essential for the smooth
If you decide to supply your own food you might need to consider a few things, such as where you will store it (refrigerated vans are
brilliant for this) and who will place the food on the tables, as well as who will clear away when people have finished eating. Some couples ask friends and family to pitch in with this, or you can see about hiring in waiting staff for the day. Remember, there’s unlikely to be a kitchen nearby so make sure you bring everything you need – forgetting a corkscrew and not being to open the wine could be a catastrophe! Power Hmmm…how is the band/ DJ going to get power? Some sites will have a power point you can use, but you’ll need to bring in cables for this, and a distribution board. This is a big board of sockets that regular 13 amp plugs can go in to. You’ll need to make certain that you only plug in up to the max amount that can be supported by the electricity supply, otherwise you’ll trip the system. It’s also
worth making sure that all appliances plugged in are PAT tested as faulty wiring can cause the system to trip, or worse, catch fire. If your site does not have fixed power, you’ll need to allow for a generator to supply electric for your wedding. These are easy to hire and don’t make too much noise – but you must remember to account for the additional fee. Things that will require power include; Lighting DJ Band Caterer for urns Photo booths (some booths will have trouble with power from a generator, best to check before you book!) Decorating and set ups So who’s going to transform the big white space in to the perfect wedding marquee? If you’ve hired a DIY wedding venue, then it’s likely that you’ll need to source, buy and put up any kind of decorations and for this you will need lots of help. If you’ve hired in tables and chairs, you will need to lay these out as you want them (making sure there is plenty of room to move around and that any exits aren’t blocked), and you will need to dress the tables with linen, centrepieces and glassware. You can put up
bunting, have flowers in jam jars, create photo walls – anything that suits your wedding theme. A word of warning however, be careful with cheap tissue paper in bright colours – if you have this close to the canvas of a marquee and there is wet weather, the colour may run in to the marquee wall, once it’s in there it’s not coming out, and you may be charged for the damage.
napkins and uneaten cake. Oh the glamour! Check with the venue who is responsible for packing down and what time this must be done by, as it’s usually you that needs to ensure things are left as you found them.
Some venues will have the furniture laid out for you, so you needn’t worry about that part, but do check beforehand! If you have got to lay out the marquee, you can expect access to the site at least a day beforehand so you have lots of time to get things how you want them.
Ask friends and family to stick around and tidy up for you, those close to you will be happy to pitch in and help. Just make sure you have lots of boxes to put things in as it’ll speed up the packing process. Also, check with your suppliers if they want to pick up from you or from the venue - that way you can bundle dirty table cloths, box up wine glasses and leave plates tidily in the marquee for collection.
Some venues will have the option to hire staff to decorate and oversee your wedding day, and to keep things in order and on track. If this isn’t available with your particular venue, most wedding planners offer an on-the-day service which will mean you can spend the time leading up to your wedding relaxing and beautifying, as well as give you peace of mind during the day itself.
If you are packing up your wedding, remember to ask what happens to all of the rubbish. You may need to plan for a few tip runs if there are no bins available, or you can hire in bins that will be collected. If there are bins on site, make sure you split your rubbish and recycling - commercial premises often get fined for mixing the two and you don’t want to come home to a fine after honeymooning!
Packing up Ah, the day is done! It will rush by and before you know it you’re stood amongst plastic glasses,
Alternatively, you may be able to hire someone to tidy up for you - that way you can wave goodbye to your guests and forget about the mess.

The
BAKING Bride
By the Flour Fairy, Cake by Sadie Smith
Biscuits (makes 12) 175g plain flour 110g soft butter 75g caster sugar 1 teaspoon mixed spice Icing 1 pack royal icing (the type you add water to & mix) Decoration Preheat oven to 180c/gas 4 1. Place the flour, mixed spice, sugar and butter in a bowl, mix and knead until a dough is formed. (If the mixture is too crumbly add a dash of milk). 2. Roll out the dough about 5mm thick and using a shaped cutter stamp out the required biscuit shape. 3. Place on a lightly greased tray.
4. Bake for about 10 minutes, until they start to go golden brown, the biscuits will still feel very soft at this stage, as they harden whilst cooling. 5. Allow to cool completely. 6. Following the instructions on the packet, make up the royal icing. Add a few drops of your chosen colour. 7. Divide the royal icing into two bowls, from the first bowl spoon the royal icing into a piping bag with a number 2 writing nozzle, pipe an outline around the edge of the biscuit. The best way to do this is to keep constant pressure on the piping bag and try to do the outline in one continuous line. Keeping an even speed will ensure the line of piping doesn’t keep breaking. 8. Allow the outline of the icing to harden for about 10 mins.
9. To ‘flood’ the biscuits you need the royal icing a little runnier, so add a few drops of water until it is more of a pouring consistency but not too thin. Then simply add the runnier icing to the piping bag and squeeze in the centre of the biscuit, it will then spread across the biscuit until it hits the line of piping done earlier. You may want to gently tease the icing to the edges with the nozzle end. 10. Add your chosen decoration. 11. Allow the icing to completely dry out and go hard then either store in an airtight container or put in little bags tied with ribbon. Tip: You can make these biscuits a few days in advance so there’s no rushing about!

Flower Power
Have you considered walking down the aisle with anything other than a pretty floral bouquet? Probably originating from when the Plague was around, people clutched bundles of garlic and herbs over their noses and mouths in a desperate effort to survive. Over time, brides added better-smelling flora to the arrangement, gradually creating the modern day beautiful bouquet
Hide the Bride
The tradition that it’s bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding dates back to the time of arranged marriages. Quite like a business transaction rather than love. It was thought that it would be embarrassing for the bride’s family if the groom changed his mind before the ceremony and didn’t like what he saw so they were kept separate.
