Laura’s Wedding Planning

It is often said that planning a wedding is one of the most stressful things you can do, however both my fiancée and I have been very lucky to find it one of the easiest things we’ve done. Our common ideas for our wedding were to be married by the sea and surrounded by our loved ones. During the planning process we have been fortunate enough to keep sight of these values. We have just 4 months to go until the big day, everything is organised and I have been very much dubbed as a ‘bride-chilla’ from our bridesmaids! In fact,

8

I’m finding the most annoying part of the planning process is other people asking constantly how the wedding plans are going, because they’re all done and have been for a while now. My two personal bugbears from the whole wedding planning process have definitely been chair covers and save the date cards – I really don’t understand the point of them when you’re sending your invites out a few months later! We’ve only one small disaster in the last few months when my friend who was making our

wedding cake informed us she wouldn’t be able to make our wedding, but I was more upset about not having her there than a cake. We have now decided to go with a giant cheese wheel cake, as my fiancée doesn’t even like cake – I know how tragic! I think if I were to give one set of advice to couples planning their dream wedding, just stay true to you. Everyone will have an opinion but don’t lose sight of what you want; after all it’s your day and your future marriage.

f your upper body is a feature you like to show off, then a halter neckline wedding dress is your friend! It will show off strong shoulders, biceps and triceps. So, if your trips to the gym, swimming pool, yoga room, pole dancing class or just lifting those wedding shopping bags have paid off, this is the style for you! Wedding Time Bridal Salon have a beautiful gown (no. 3 opposite) that has a lovely lace cap-sleeve take on the halter neck style. What about those of you that want a little oopmf? The easiest way to add curves to a slender frame is with tulle fabric flowers or ruffles in strategic locations. A good seamstress can alter your chosen dress to include these. If your bridesmaids would like the same detail, then Fab Frocks of Westbourne have a huge range of dresses, like no.5 opposite, that give a beautiful shape. If you’d prefer to cover up your arms, luckily for you, long-sleeve gowns are all the rage right now. Sleeves are practical, elegant and definitely more conservative if

you’re having a religious ceremony. We love the combination of long lace sleeves and a shorter length of Daisy (no.4 opposite) from Courtyard Bridal. This has a quirky vintage style to it. The tried and tested Empire waist is fabulous for creating a streamline look down through your torso. It’s best to select a gown that’s cut close to the body so you can avoid the ‘maternity’ look. If you have a small waist, opt for a belt or sash—there’s no better way to draw attention to your shape. The best part is, many dresses are supplied separately from their belts so you can choose the colour and material you like best.

The princess style dress works well with most figures, the bell shape of the skirt balancing out the shoulders. A traditional dress style, often seen on Disney princesses! Bridal Reloved have a diverse range of dresses available, many like no. 7 above. If you’re looking to wow your Prince Charming, then forget the glass slippers, go for a dress that really says ‘Here comes the Bride!’. Whilst the princess style is all about show, the sleek elegance of a column dress is understated gorgeousness. Perfectly suited to you ladies with a more athletic figure, the fabric tends to drape your body. It’s worth noting that with such a figure-hugging dress, it can tend to cling in the wrong

Beth & Tom’s Wedding

How did you two meet?

Tom and I were introduced to each other by a mutual friend back in 2004 at an under-18’s Christmas club night in Bournemouth. Tom asked me “what is Santa bringing you for Christmas, or has it just arrived?!” I don’t know what was worse, the fact that it was possibly the cheesiest chat up line ever, or the fact that it actually worked!

How, when and where did the proposal happen?

In September 2010 I celebrated my 21st Birthday. Tom spoilt me with a champagne and strawberry breakfast at our home. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said “YES” and the ring fitted perfectly! It was the best birthday present ever.

17

Boscombe, that I found ‘the dress’. I could not fault the impeccable service from Chameleon Bridal who made me feel like a princess.

Tell us about planning the Wedding I always dreamed of getting married outside in a country garden. Researching different venues led my mum to suggest that we hold our wedding at our familyrun pub, The Silent Woman. We applied for the license, which was quickly accepted and then planning swiftly got underway. We relandscaped the garden to create the perfect backdrop for our ceremony and everything came together perfectly. It was great that we could organise every aspect of our wedding and our staff did a fantastic job implementing our plans. It felt so very special to us that we could get

18

married in my family home surrounded by our family, friends and our pub regulars who had watched us grow up! We decided to hire a marquee to create more space due to our large guest list. Neal and Ray at Camelot Marquees were fantastic and supplied us with a beautiful marquee which was the perfect setting for dancing the night away. Once we had chosen the perfect venue and set the date I decided to go dress shopping with my mum and my four bridesmaids. I visited many local bridal stores and met many super suppliers; however it wasn’t until I visited Chameleon, in

Tom then decided that as he couldn’t see my dress before the big day itself, then I couldn’t see his suit either! When he went to Well Groomed to pick the suits I sent my Dad along with strict instructions of what I wanted. Tom did pick very well though and Well Groomed did a great job. For our flowers I was recommended Rhea at New Street Flowers in Poole. She had some fantastic ideas and created the most perfect flowers to suit every aspect of our wedding. Our cake was created by Lauren at ‘The Cakery’. Lauren brought my design to life and it was extremely yummy. We decided to have casino tables, alongside our disco, for our evening entertainment. These were provided by Absolute Fun Casino and were great fun!

Are you going on a honeymoon?

We went on our honeymoon to Mexico on the Monday immediately after our Wedding. We stayed at a gorgeous hotel on the Riviera Maya and had the most amazing time.

What date was your wedding? Saturday 30th June 2012.

Was the wedding day everything you expected?

Our wedding day was everything we dreamed of and more! We couldn’t thank everyone enough who helped to make it so special, from our fantastic suppliers to our family and friends. A special thank you goes to my parents, Richard and Denise, for hosting such a special day. I want to do it all again!

20

Who were your suppliers?

Dress: Maggie Sottero from Chameleon in Boscombe. Bridesmaid dresses: BHS Bridal Suits: Well-Groomed on Ashley Road, Parkstone. Cake: The Cakery in Corfe Mullen. Marquee: Camelot Marquees Photographer: John McDonald – a family friend who actually came out of retirement to capture our special day! We couldn’t thank him enough for the fantastic job that he did. Venue: The Silent Woman Inn. Through planning

my wedding I helped set up a new wedding business for our pub and have been able to fulfil my dream job of wedding planning. We now regularly host weddings and I can honestly say it is such a privilege to make other couples’ days as special as ours. Casino: Absolute Fun Casino. Florist: New Street Flowers in Poole Hair: Snippets hairdressers in Bovington. Tracey and her team were great company on the morning of the wedding and did a super job with our hair. DJ: Paul Ballet Transport: Hallmark Cars. Singer: Tony Mitchell, a Rat-Pack Singer from Weston Super Mare who entertained our guests in the garden after our Ceremony.

What’s going to be big in 2016 weddings?

We predict that ‘Al Fresco’ will be big 2016. With the freedom it allows for venue dressing, dining and flowers, it’s easy to see why this naturally elegant theme will be seen.

Durston Castle in Swanage has both inside and outside space with spectacular sea views.

There are many ways you can bring the outside in, on your big day. One of the most obvious ways is the choice of venue. If you’re having a marquee wedding in a field, you’re already surrounded by lush, green grass. Similarly, if you are having your venue in a converted barn off the beaten track, you’re already well on your way to achieving your desired feel. However it is still possible to create an ‘al fresco’ atmosphere in more traditional wedding reception venues. Look for somewhere with lots of big windows, letting in huge amounts of natural light.

The Itlian Villa is located within the grounds of Compton Acres, gardens of outstanding beauty.

The Silent Woman Inn in Wareham is perfect for an intimate wedding on the lawn.

Other ways in which you can have a sense of being outside, is in your décor choices. With this theme in mind, there is no such thing as too many flowers! Flowers in the brides hair, head garlands on flower girls, centre pieces and hung on the back of chairs. You can even bring in ornamental trees, and decorate higher up with branches if your venue is large enough. Your colour scheme will also enhance a feeling of being outside. Use natural colours as your base, for example sage greens and browns, with highlights of yellows, whites and blues. Flowers as jewellery is one way to bring the theme in to your outfit. Thanks to Rebecca Frost Photography, Jennifer Poynter Flowers and Amazing Face Hair and Make Up

Why not incorporate your favourite outdoor eating treats into your wedding. This trend allows for so many options, from BBQs and hog roasts to picnics, buffets and even fish and chip vans! If you prefer a more traditional approach to food, then your caterers can incorporate fresh produce to give that ‘outdoor’ edge.

We love this natural, unstructured bouquet by Concept Flowers. Photo by Bridle Photography.

Beales Gourmet Catering provide high standard catering that uses local produce.

How did you two meet? My mother in law was originally my amazing hair stylist at HNB salon and spa in Canford Cliffs and after 2 years of awesome hair cuts and saying how much I’d suit her rugby playing son, she asked for my number for him. We went on a blind date that day and have never been apart since! How, when & where did the proposal happen? I got told one morning that I wouldn’t be going to work but instead to Italy on holiday! I thought it would be a weekend in Rome, as I’d seen a deal a few months previously. Landing in Verona (and quite nervous we were then going to have to have a long bus journey to Rome or something horrific) I was totally surprised to find we pulled up outside a small boutique hotel and, Ben, who never plans any of our holidays, had seriously done his research! Every detail was planned to perfection but still had a totally relaxed feeling, like he was just bluffing it! My favourite story is Romeo and Juliet but luckily ours didn’t have a tragic ending!

30

On our first night in Italy, Ben took me to see the Romeo & Juliet opera in the Verona Arena, it was just magical! The next day he’d hired bikes and led me to the highest viewpoint over Verona. He started talking but I think I completely zoned out of what he was saying as he went down on one knee - I was so surprised! It was perfect for me and it became clear why he had acted so strangely that morning and was up at 5 am! The rest of the weekend was spent exploring Verona castle, Juliet’s balcony, and a gorgeous Michelin star restaurant... plus sampling plenty of Prosecco! What date was your wedding? 24th August 2014

Was the wedding day everything you expected? Yes! In fact, some things turned out better than expected like the band, the cake, and the immense love from all of our lovely guests. To have everyone under one roof was so special! Where did you honeymoon? We started in Sri Lanka, then onto the Maldives, Kuala Lumpur, Bali and the last days were spent in Singapore. It was something really special that we’ll never forget and have some incredible memories including experiencing a gorgeous sunrise after climbing a volcano in Bali! Who were your suppliers?

HNB salon and Spa in Canford Cliffs Dorset. I

even got to have my very talented, award winning mother-in-law, Stephanie Stevenson, do my hair on the day! My make up was by Emma Tatchell emmatatchellmakeup. co.uk Our wedding stylist was the phenomenal Julie C Nicholls who has a wedding showroom and also produced exceptional stationary - she worked with every idea I had and made it a reality. The fireworks from Pyrotecfireworks were the best I’ve ever seen. They fulfilled every request, even making a huge pyro sign saying “party on” and an exploding champagne bottle so that guests would know that’s not the

end to the night! Then, when we left at midnight they set off an arc of gerbs for us to drive through. Nomad Catering provided the food and drink and set up their kitchen in the castle. Their staff were fab and helped keep the event to time, serving drinks and food in the rose garden while Ben and I had our photos. Then a four course dinner with a coffee bar so we could greet evening guests and throw the bouquet! The band were called Bounce and were incredible. My dress was from Butterfly Brides in Poundbury, Dorchester.

The suits were classic top hat and tails from Moss Bros in Bournemouth. The beautiful cake was created by Hayley at Sweetcheeks Bakehouse. sweetcheeksbakehouse. co.uk The photographer and videographer were Christian Lawson and BCT Videos. Our transportation was a Rolls Royce Phantom III from RRElite. Our ceremony was at St Andrews church in the Lulworth Estate followed by the reception in Lulworth Castle.

Expert Advice .co.uk

When it comes to choosing the right people to help you make your dream wedding day a reality how do you know who to trust? Sometimes you can be handing over hundreds of pounds for a service or product to someone you don’t know. Firstly, word of mouth recommendations from people you know are a really great way of choosing a supplier that you know has provided an excellent service previously. If your friends and family had a positive experience then it’s likely that you will too, however, it’s good practice to do your own research too. Wisebride.co.uk was set up to allow couples looking for trustworthy suppliers, view images and reviews from past clients. Each listing provides information on the business, photographs of their work and reviews from their previous customers. Every customer is looking for something different so it’s a great way for you to see what stood out for other people. Wise Bride is completely free for couples planning their weddings to use and you can contact each business directly through the site. Our listed business agree to have feedback from their customers published, so you know that companies listed are trustworthy. Once you have narrowed down your choices via wisebride.co.uk, here is a list of suggested questions to ask them;

How many weddings have you done? What is the cost and when is the deposit and balance due? What is your cancellation policy? Do you have insurance? Do you provide a contract? Can I talk to one of your previous clients? Good luck with your wedding planning and remember to come back to Wise Bride after your big day and leave your suppliers a review!

Victoria & Max All photography by Samantha Davis Photography www.samanthadavisphotography.co.uk

How did you two meet? We met almost 6 years ago in Southampton. I was out for a friend’s birthday and went to a local bar where on the same night Max was also out for one of his friend’s birthday. Friends from both parties knew each other and we were introduced. It was only short and sweet that night but we made contact via Facebook and a few days later exchanged numbers. We finally met up for our first date after 3 weeks of chatting.

40

How, when & where did the proposal happen? I planned a surprise trip to Venice in 2012 for Max’s 30th Birthday, somewhere he had been wanting to visit for a while. As we had a few months before we went, Max had decided prior to the trip that the time was right to pop the question whilst we were out there! He followed tradition in asking my Dad for permission, which left both families back home waiting for the happy phone call! It happened after a long day of sightseeing and gondola adventures. Max had been acting slightly odd all day... little did I know it was the nerves that had got the better of him.

We had an evening meal followed by drinks in the hotel (Max had quite a few to calm his nerves). Shortly after that we ventured back to our room and he finally got down on one knee and popped the question! Tell us about planning the wedding. After buying a house in summer 2012, we started to plan our wedding for April 2014. After attending numerous wedding fayres and reading plenty of wedding magazines we discovered the Italian Villa at Compton Acres by going to one of their open days. From that first visit we knew that we wanted

to get married there. The venue was beautiful and the gardens were stunning. We loved the fact we could have each part of our day on a different floor of the villa. It also kept in with the theme of where we got in engaged, which was perfect! Laura was our wedding co-ordinator at the venue. She made planning our day so easy and stress free and was always on hand to give advice and answer the many questions we had. All of our suppliers were an absolute dream to deal with. The attention to detail from each one was spot on and they all listened to exactly what we wanted and made our dreams come true.

Say Cheese! Rob and I met in Nottingham whilst we served in the Army together. We wanted something different for our wedding and chose this delightful “Cheese Tower decorated with fruits and flowers. The phrase that stuck with us about Roberto is "it's your day, I can do whatever you want." And he embraced our ideas!

Since Roman times couples have exchanged rings to be worn on the third finger of the left hand. The Romans believed that a vein connected this finger directly to the heart. The ring also symbolises everlasting love, as it is a never-ending circle. There is a less romantic notion that the ring represents a shackle for the bride, but that’s not a very romantic view - although this might make a good joke for the wedding speeches!!

Funnily enough, it’s only in fairly recent times that the tradition of wearing white on your wedding day has taken hold. It was in 1840 when Queen Victoria wore a white gown for her marriage to Albert of Saxe-Coburg that the fashion began. It was actually rather a statement to wear white, as it was the colour of mourning - most brides opted for coloured dresses on their wedding day with pale blue being a popular choice.
