Hello all! W
ow, what a wet & windy winter we had. Let’s hope the worst of that is behind us so we can look forward to some sunny days! Our big news is that we’ve got a new look. We thought the magazine needed a little refresh, we hope you like it.
In this jam-packed issue we have lots of great features to help inspire you for your own planning. For those of you who haven’t quite got started on the crazy wedding planning rollercoaster yet, there is a ‘ceremonies explained’ feature; this will help you decide which type of wedding service is best suited to you. We’ve also included a section for the boys - if your groom-to-be is very involved in the planning process, he may like this. If not, leave it open on the appropriate page and hopefully he’ll get the hint and give you a hand!

ince becoming engaged on my birthday last August, I’m both excited and surprised at how time has flown over the last few months, meaning that I am now half way through my engagement! With 14 months between getting engaged and the wedding, we decided to start looking for our suppliers pretty quickly. I’m glad we did, as it became clear quite quickly that popular suppliers and services get booked up over a year in advance. I’m feeling pretty organized with things at the moment.
8
I’ve really enjoyed having the time to research different suppliers and meeting lots of people along the way who have given invaluable advice to my fiancé and I. We have also gotten some great ideas and inspiration from friends’ weddings we’ve attended over the past months. I tried my wedding dress on for the first time last week. It was such a special moment as I’d forgotten how beautiful it was and was worried I’d not like it! It really made everything seem a bit more ‘real’. The shop is kindly looking after it for me until it’s time for alterations. Next on the planning list is booking a florist and designing invitations. I’m guessing things will calm down for a bit now until 2-3 months before the big day, when it all gets going again, but for now I’m just going to enjoy feeling relaxed about it all.

o we all know about not upstaging the bride – but you don’t want to blend into the crowd. Go for elegance. Determine what kind of thing the bride wants you to be wearing then start looking as soon as possible. It’s a good idea to talk to the groom’s mother about your choices. If possible, maybe send her a swatch of fabric so you can find dresses that will complement each other.

It’s difficult for any mother of the bride to know how much of a part in the engagement and ceremony she should be playing. There’s an extensive list of duties that may or may not be expected of you. On a practical note, here’s a few examples…

Help look for wedding and reception venues. The chances are, you and the other parents will have more contacts when it comes to finding a venue and people like florists and caterers – especially locally. This will be especially helpful if the wedding is in your hometown.

Help with money. Discussing the wedding budget may be a tricky subject to bring up. But the sooner it’s done, the sooner the planning can begin. Let your daughter and her fiancé know exactly what you are willing
to help with and what isn’t really feasible. Let her know that your side of the family can be your responsibility. When it comes to contacting them, sending out invitations and RSVPs - you can be a point of contact for them. It will save the bride time and confusion and will be especially helpful if it’s a larger wedding with lots of extended family attending. Help plan, organise and attend the bridal shower and the rehearsal do. The less the bride has to

worry about, the better. On the day, be a general helping hand. You may be required to stand in the receiving line to greet guests. Traditionally, the mother of the bride heads up the line. Make sure the guests have all been greeted and are comfortable. Keep everything calm for the bride, with lots of assurance and kind words. Most importantly, you should be a shoulder to cry on. She needs love and support. This is where the whole bridal party come in, but you might be able
to offer something that they can’t - words of wisdom. From the moment she says “I do” to when they set off on their honeymoon, your bride will go through a rollercoaster of emotions. This is when your role as not only a MOB, but a mum will be invaluable. Be ready to do a lot of listening, advising and compliment giving. At the end of the day, if your daughter and her fiancé have the day they were imagining and everyone has a good time, including you, what more could you ask for?

Beth & Tom’s Wedding All photography by John McDonald
How did you two meet? Tom and I were introduced to each other by a mutual friend back in 2004 at an under-18’s Christmas club night in Bournemouth. Tom asked me “what is Santa bringing you for Christmas, or has it just arrived?!” I don’t know what was worse, the fact that it was possibly the cheesiest chat up line ever, or the fact that it actually worked!
How, when and where did the proposal happen? In September 2010 I celebrated my 21st Birthday. Tom spoilt me with a champagne and strawberry breakfast at our home. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said “YES” and the ring fitted perfectly! It was the best birthday present ever.

‘the dress’. I could not fault the impeccable service from Chameleon Bridal who made me feel like a princess.
Tell us about planning the Wedding I always dreamt of getting married outside in a country garden. Researching different venues led my mum to suggest that we hold our wedding at our familyrun pub, The Silent Woman. We applied for the license, which was quickly accepted and then planning swiftly got underway. We relandscaped the garden to create the perfect backdrop for our ceremony and everything came together perfectly. It was great that we could organise every aspect of our wedding and our staff did a fantastic job implementing our plans. It felt so very special to us that we could get
18
married in my family home surrounded by our family, friends and our pub regulars who had watched us grow up! We decided to hire a marquee to create more space due to our large guest list. Neal and Ray at Camelot Marquees were fantastic and supplied us with a beautiful marquee which was the perfect setting for dancing the night away. Once we had chosen the perfect venue and set the date I decided to go dress shopping with my mum and my four bridesmaids. I visited many local bridal stores and met many super suppliers; however it wasn’t until I visited Chameleon, in Boscombe, that I found
Tom then decided that as he couldn’t see my dress before the big day itself, then I couldn’t see his suit either! When he went to Well Groomed to pick the suits I sent my Dad along with strict instructions of what I wanted. Tom did pick very well though and Well Groomed did a great job. For our flowers I was recommended Rhea at New Street Flowers in Poole. She had some fantastic ideas and created the most perfect flowers to suit every aspect of our wedding. Our cake was created by Lauren at ‘The Cakery’. Lauren brought my design to life and it was extremely yummy. We decided to have casino tables, alongside our disco, for our evening entertainment. These were provided by Absolute Fun Casino and were great fun!

he girls make a day of it - Why not the boys? When it comes to the big day, instead of twiddling your thumbs all morning, why not treat your groomsmen to a sharpening up session as well? Make a morning of it! Groomsmen: How to prepare yourself for the big day (and night)
A wet shave at home with a visit from a traditional barber will get you and the groomsmen looking dapper for the day. The ladies get the hair and make-up treatment. It’s only fair you boys get something done so you’re feeling particularly smart on the day.

Refreshments gentlemen?
Treat yourself and the boys to some special occasion beers - only one or two of course.
Nibbles and canapés?
Man them up with some miniature burgers and beer shots to settle any nervous stomachs. This is an alternative to the type of champagne breakfast the girls have.
Show you care!
This might be the right time to give your groomsmen a small token of your appreciation. How about a ‘Broquet’? A fun basket like bundle of man gifts like drinks, cufflinks, trinkets and gimmicks - maybe something meaningful as well.

EXTRAS Every couple wants their wedding to be personal, unique and enjoyed by their friends and family. The guests you’ve invited are there to witness one of the best days of your life and share in your happiness so are pleased to be there. Some of us though, really want to treat our guests with some extras on the day so we’ve compiled some ideas. Remember though, your guests will have a great day as long as you do! A great way to personalise your wedding venue is to have it styled. Many companies can offer services from chair covers, linen, centre pieces, trees and lots more - all to match in with your wedding theme. Just a few small touches can add that wow factor. Chat to Perfectly Pretty Wedding, www.perfectlyprettywedding.co.uk

Sweet Carts are a popular and modern way of providing your wedding guests with favours. They can visit the cart and choose their favourite pick & mix sweets. Most companies decorate the cart to match your wedding theme and colours. Chat to South Coast Sweet Cart, www.southcoastsweetcart.com
A mobile bar is a great addition to a marquee, hall or garden and takes the stress away from having to buy and chill your own alcohol. Many mobile bars don’t charge a hire fee and charge reasonable prices so you won’t have to worry about extras costs, just extra fun! Chat to A&D Mobile Bars, hardy690@msn.com

awkward
questions
Is it rude to not invite children to our wedding?
Can I ask my guest to bring their own alcohol?
The short answer? No. It’s perfectly fine. You might get a few comments from a couple of friends, but most people will have the decency to whinge behind your back. Kids at a wedding is a personal choice, and for some the idea of not having their friends and family’s children is a strange one. There’s a variety of companies, like Tots and Tiaras, that can be brought in to keep them entertained throughout the day, which won’t cause a disruption. However, some (us included) couldn’t afford to include all of the children that come with the adults invited. For many weddings there is a limit on the number of guests the venue can hold and if the children take up 30 of those spots, you may have to not invite friends or family that you really want to be there. At the end of the day it needs to be the wedding that you both want.
If your venue allows it, then we think it’s a great idea! The cost of alcohol is a big consideration for your wedding. If you’re getting married in a hotel or venue, it’s a good idea to check bar prices with your guests in mind. If you’re having a marquee wedding, or a wedding where you can bring in your own caterers and bar provision, then first ask about corkage fees, as these can make the ‘bring your own’ option a lot more pricey than expected. Some couples do a mixture of both, have guests bring their own wine for the day, but then change to a cash-bar in the evening – A&D Mobile Bars are worth having a chat with about this.
Wedding save the dates and invitations give guest plenty of warning to find a baby-sitter and even though they might not be there till the bitter end of the day, they can come for the important bits. Those that only attend the evening reception aren’t likely to bring kids anyway, so they’re not so much an issue.
If you are lucky enough to have an unrestricted venue, such as Holton Lee or Weddings in a Field at Farmer Palmer’s, then asking your guests to bring their own drinks is a great solution for everyone. You don’t have to budget for a bar or for drinks, and your guests get the drinks they like best for a fraction of bar costs. If you are worried about asking, then try something like this on your invitations;
If anyone does complain that their little darling wasn’t included on the list, you can always say that as it’s an adult-only wedding, you want them to be able to enjoy themselves and that you’ve researched a local babysitting service, if they need it.
Welcome drinks as well as table and toast drinks will be provided for our guests but to save everyone money on high bar charges, we’re going to have a bring your own drinks reception. There will be some ice/fridges available for your beverages.

Charlie’s Wedding All photography by Tim Churchill
How did you two meet? We met quite unromantically at Walkabout in June 2004 and had our first date at McDonalds for breakfast (not on the same occasion I hasten to add)! We went on some more acceptable dates to the restaurant and cinema after that!
30
How, when & where did the proposal happen? We were sailing the Whitsunday Islands, Australia in May 2011 on our round-the-world-trip with our friends and we went scuba diving one morning in the Great Barrier Reef. At the bottom of the seabed, we all
stopped to feed the fish and James had written “Will you marry me?” on a dive slate. I thought it was a joke cooked up between him and the mischievous boat crew so I said “no” whilst trying to mime laughter. It wasn’t until we reached the surface and he showed me the ring that I realised it was a serious proposal! Of
course I said yes then! It was just so unexpected! Trust me to ruin such a romantic proposal.
Tell us about planning the wedding. This was really fun and I miss it a lot. We had a long engagement so I had lots of time to perfect my ideas. I did go to a lot of wedding fairs, and the one and only Dorset Wedding Festival, and they are the best shopping experiences ever. So many ideas and offers and wonderful suppliers to speak to, it was all a bit much sometimes but it meant that we knew what was available to us before we booked anything.
What date was your wedding? Saturday 21 December 2013. We definitely wanted a Saturday to make it easier for all the guests. As for the winter element, it was actually Sebastien, one of the wedding coordinators at the Sandbanks Hotel where we got married, who sold the idea to us. He really set the scene in their Compass Room by telling us about candelabras and the fire and we fell in love with the theme.
Was the wedding day everything you expected? Everyone tells you how quick the day is going to go but it’s not until you experience it that you really appreciate that. From the moment I held hands with James at the end of the aisle, the whole day was a blur of family, friends, photos and dancing. It was such a wonderful day but we were both exhausted by the end of it! It was very overwhelming having everyone there to celebrate

with us and I felt bad that I couldn’t talk to everybody properly. Was so good seeing everyone though and I wish we could have more get togethers like that! There were a few surprises for me and James on the day which was lovely. The biggest one was Laura’s (of Lauraflora, Charminster) decorations of the ceremony room which was breathtaking. She had gone all out on the winter theme. She had also made our gingerbread village and again, we did not see it until the wedding day and were very excited by it! James got so excited he smashed it up later too….. We had also never met our magician, Paul Newton, or the guitarist, Alex Deutsch as I had ‘won’ them at a charity auction set up by Something Borrowed’s very own

Sam Savage. They were great however and kept our guests thoroughly entertained during the drinks reception.
Are you going on a honeymoon? Thanks to our incredible family and friends, we went on a mini honeymoon to Paris and have booked a 2 week trip to Peru in June! We’re going to trek the Inca Trail and stay in the Amazon Rainforest and we absolutely can’t wait.

A very vintage wedding
Strictly speaking, the term vintage is used to describe fashion which is over 20 years old. It’s style from another era and has really taken off here in the UK over the last couple of years. Maybe a reason for its popularity is its environmental friendliness. Brides love the idea of sharing a unique piece of history and recycling timeless pieces. Although, it’s the old-fashioned look and feel that really lends a sense of glamour and elegance to a wedding.

James & Gabby’s Wedding All photography by Anna Morgan Photography
How did you two meet?
It was a lazy Sunday in Dec 2008 and I called my best friend who lived in Brighton wanting a girly day out. We went to a pub for her friend’s 30th, and found a group of hung-over boys, including James. We immediately hit it off, and ended up spending the whole afternoon with her friends. When I had to leave, James sent my friend a text asking for permission to let him take me out…I obviously said yes and she sent him my number.
How, when & where did the proposal happen?
Probably for 2 years before we got engaged, every time James and I went away for a weekend, everyone at work would tease me that this was going to be “the” weekend. On the weekend it actually happened, my friends at work refused to bet that it would happen this time! So the proposal was a complete surprise (although I confess it was odd for James to be the
40
one planning the weekend away!). He recreated our first ever weekend away together – he picked the same bed and breakfast in Bath, where we had previously stayed and he even asked for the same room! James suggested we go and watch the sunset somewhere (something we had done on our first weekend away together).
So he drove me out of town to Glastonbury Tor – one of our favourite places in the UK. We got out of the car and he took a rucksack out of the boot and in silence marched me up the hill. At the top of the Tor it was so windy, we walked round and round to find shelter and as I turned to face him, James got down on one knee and proposed with a stunning ring. I immediately said yes and called our families. We celebrated in the same restaurant that we had eaten on our first weekend in Bath! A truly memorable and amazing moment!
Tell us about planning the wedding. As a couple we strongly value our family and friends and so the main aim in planning the day
was wanting to ensure we spend as much time with our close family and friends as possible. We also wanted the day to be highly personalised and unique, we wanted to do it ‘our way’ and not be tied to venue requirements. For months we struggled to find a venue that ticked all our boxes, until one day I attended a Wedding Fair and caught eye of a flyer for Beach Weddings Bournemouth. My family are from Bournemouth and my granddad was a lifeguard on the beach. Every summer, we would holiday in a beach hut, and so when I found out you could get married there, it seemed meant to be. As soon as we met Melanie and the team, we knew there simply wasn’t another place that
was more appropriate nor where we could have such a truly unique, personal wedding experience. Once we had picked the ceremony venue, everything else fell into place. I also found my wedding dress and shoes at the same fair, and Melanie had an amazing set of recommended suppliers. All of them were amazing – not only extremely talented at their respective jobs, but they all strived to help create anything we asked and I don’t think I ever heard the words ‘not possible’. Our theme was ‘vintage seaside travel’ and most choices came from this. We wanted the marquee to blend into the beach and sea and so we chose neutral colours and

incorporated driftwood and seaside plants through the marquee and into the bouquets/button holes. We had a world map table plan and our table names were beaches/bays we had visited together and we had a vintage suitcase for guests to leave cards. Personalisation was important to us – we achieved this by involving our family in the ceremony – James’ mother played the flute and one of the readings was a poem written by one of the best men.
What date was your wedding? 15 June 2013

Everything and more! We had been warned by all our friends that on the day, things never quite go to plan but ours went completely to plan and truly was the perfect day. We had an amazing set of suppliers who made sure we didn’t have to worry about a thing on the day and as a result we were able to simply sit back and really enjoy the day. The forecast was for gale force winds, but aside from an amazing photo of me battling the wind with my mum, I really don’t remember the wind impacting the day at all and we enjoyed the most amazing sunset during our first dance. The photos look amazing and when we were getting our thank you cards printed, we were asked if we had got married in the Caribbean!

You will need: Goldfish bowls (as many as you need for tables) Pebbles Shells Water beads Pillar candle Mirror plate String Mini pegs Card Pen Step 1 Place some pebbles in the bottom of a goldfish bowl leaving a circle for the candle. Place the candle in the centre. Step 2 Soak your water beads in a tray according to the instructions. When ready, tip in to a jug so it’s easier to pour in to your vases. Make sure you cover the pebbles with water beads.
Step 3 Place a few shells on top of the water beads. Step 4 Wrap brown string around the outside of the vase and tie a knot.
Step 5 Write your table number on a piece of card and mount it on a contrasting colour card. This can be attached to the string with a mini peg.

Civil ceremonies are nonreligious legal marriages that stay clear of any prayer, hymns or religious belief. In the UK they are performed by a government official called a registrar in any licensed venue. The actual agreement of marriage involves both parties signing the register as well as signatures of two witnesses. Generally, couples keep ceremonies simple but many include music, poems, ring bearing and words and promises. Legal statements and declarations, signing of the register and presentation of the marriage certificate are the bones of a civil ceremony. People often go for this option if they prefer a non-religious ceremony, they want to keep it small, private, or save money. Couples wanting to hold ceremonies in unlicensed venues need to make their marriage legal with a civil ceremony beforehand.
Celebrant Ceremony
Using a celebrant allows you to have as much flexibility as you want. You can have your ceremony wherever you choose – whether it be in a field or in your back garden. It can be entirely up to you on how the occasion flows and can reflect your lifestyle and suit your friends and family’s needs too. No restrictions. A celebrant will help you put together your personalised service, where the words, vows and promises have personal significance for you, rather than
48
following a set format. These ceremonies are not legal however so couples have to also take part in a civil ceremony to be married in the eyes of the law.
Church Ceremonies
Church weddings have always been the most traditional ceremonies in the UK. They have some element of personalisation, but generally they follow a set format which involves traditions like walking up the aisle, ring bearing, hymns and spoken vows and promises. Christian ceremonies express worship, joy, and belief in God. Churches can also often act as a central hub for smaller communities where the families can share the celebration of a member’s marriage in the eyes of God. The congregation can see that you are making a solemn, eternal covenant with each other before God.
Pagan Handfasting Ceremonies
Handfasting ceremonies originated in medieval times and are often said to be Celtic or Pagan celebrations of marriage. They are an alternative to traditional ceremonies. The format has many elements which have been altered and added on through history. Ceremonies include casting the circle, paying respect to the earth’s elements and jumping the broom. The main component of a handfasting is the tying of the couple’s wrists with ribbon or cord. It is here that the phrase tying the knot comes from.
The gift of a wooden spoon A ‘lovespoon’ was given to a woman as a sign of affection from a would-be suitor. This tradition dates back to the 17th Century, when a man needed to prove to a girl’s family that he was capable of hard work to provide a living for his family. The intricacy of the decoration on the spoon reflected the skill and ability of the man, an attractive quality to some! Different symbols were used in the carvings, from lucky horseshoes to crosses for faith. Some incorporate a caged section, which contains little wooden balls to indicate how many children they hoped for. The UK tradition of Lovespoons originate from Wales, but there are versions in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, where they have their own customs. Today, lovespoons make a thoughtful and pretty gift to a new couple on their wedding day.
Confett i Confetti has Latin origins, and the modern tissue paper and rice can be linked to the custom of throwing grains and sweets during meaningful occasions, such as a wedding. Different cultures have used this tradition, dating as far back as Pagan times. Rice or grain is an ancient symbol of fertility, so throwing this on a newly married couple is a way of wishing them well with their family life. The word confetti comes from the Italian sweet – an almond covered in a colourful sugar coating – which was thrown at special occasions, carnivals and celebrations. Again, the sweet is said to represent fertility. Nowadays the sugared almond is given as a favour to wedding guests rather than thrown on the newlyweds (good job too, they’re pretty hard!)
